USCC 4G LTE Coming Soon-ish? - Samsung Mesmerize

Maybe a re-post but....
http://www.uscellular.com/about/pre...CES-IN-TIME-FOR-THE-HOLIDAYS.html?sf1426755=1
I wonder if they are going to charge us more for the 4g LTE service? Maybe remove the "unlimited" plan (which technically has a soft cap already anyways).

Yes it's a repost and month old news. No idea what you are talking about with an "unlimited" plan or a soft cap. It's very clear that it's a 5GB hard cap. Anything more than that and you pay for it.

Maybe i'm grandfathered in, but the only time anyone has said anything to me was when i hit the 10gb mark (from tethering). Furthermore, about a 1 1/2 - 2 years ago when i went to get on a data plan, i asked a USCC rep if it was in fact unlimited, and if there was some sort of soft cap. He specifically said there wasn't.

He lied. Go on USCC's website. Nowhere does it mention unlimited data. Data is capped at 5GB and you will pay up to $200 for going over that. Whether you are grandfathered into something else I can't say.

On my blackberry it had unlimited, but as far as I know its a 5 gig hard cap on androids, and being that I've had to pay for some nasty overages I'd assume its correct. Damn those rom updates when they come out in bunches, lol

Last time I was on the website there was a 50 dollar unlimited plan. Is that no longer available? It was part of the belief project stuff they had on there. I'm on the one you are talking about 30 bucks for 5 gig of data per month.
Tap-a-Talked from my Mesmerize

Why does it matter? Who cares. The Mesmerize isn't a 4G compatible phone. It's a hardware thing. So who cares what USCC gets, if you're in this forum then you can't use it.

Not throttled because you grandfathered in the Unlimited Data plan before they capped it a few months ago. Next time you re-up you will probably be forced to sign a limited data plan contract

Nope...as long as he doesn't get rid of the plan he will be fine. But the rest of us are stuck with 2GB max. I only pay for the 200mb because I am too cheap to get the 2GB. I prefer wifi anyway because it is faster.

Flashman is correct. Plus throttling refers to bumping someone down to a slower network like 2g. Tmo has a 5 gig cap on unlimited before they slow you down.

There are people on hear that still have the $15 unlimited data. It's in the contract, all you are doing is renewing the contract. Extending it. I was hitting 10 gb on my razr2 feature phone way back when I first signed up. Got a fuze and had to switch to smartphone unlimited. On the fuze, I averaged about 40 gigs. Only way it's changing is if they charge for 4g like sprint. Which I'll gladly do.

Thoughts on Verizon's tiered plans

It's a sad thought, but I think Verizon is really killing it for us Android/smart phone users. Their new tiered plans will start July 7 and the prices are ridiculous. (80$ for 10GB) (30$ for 2GB) and more, but It's not that I hate Verizon. I'm new to them, I've only been with them for 2 months, and I love the quality of service I get. Good thing is we all keep our unlimited data due to our contracts having been signed before July 7th.
But it's like Verizon is trying to kick out all the smart phone users with their already overpriced plans. Att isn't looking any better, but when I look at Sprint (which I left for Verizon) and their new LTE contract and unlimited data it looks like a haven for me.
Now I love my Thunderbolt and will stay with it for most likely half my contract (maybe the whole 2 years) then switch over to Sprint because I really don't want to pay that much for data, I always go above 10GB sadly, I hope Sprint stays unlimited until then, or I could hope for the impossible. That Verizon will stop being greedy. :/
What are your thoughts on this? Will you be sticking with the new plans when your contract is over? or will you switch over to a new carrier? (if so which carrier?) I felt like making a topic about this to read other people's thoughts on this.
I have little choice where I live. It's Verizon or crap signal. Sprint has zero coverage here. I despise Verizon's policies and outright greed. The price on data plans and tethering was shocking when we got these phones (first smart phones for us). I had read some where that their agreement with the FCC when they bought the 700mhz spectrum for LTE is going to cause problems for their tethering plans. It was something about being required to allow tethering on that spectrum.
Regardless, I'm not a heavy wireless bandwidth user, but it would be convenient to be able to link my laptop up when I'm out in the boonies and need to remote into work. And not get raped for $20 every time I need it.
I only signed a one year contract. I hope my rates don't change when its over. Looks like ill be buying all my phones cash to avoid a data plan upgrade.

Glad I got in when I did.
I don't use my data that much, or so I thought...but my bill every month is 6 to 8 GB. I know I can cut that back by downloading all the different ROMs and Kernals on my PC then moving them over...but man it sure is nice using LTE speeds to download 200 plus MB...
I'm not one to start rumors...only this discussion.
Anyone feel this might be a pre-cursor to an iPhone 5? I still don't believe it'll have LTE...

There are only a small handful of phones you can even buy and not be forced to use a data plan.
I would bet my money, if I were a gamblin' man, that when your contract is up...you will be forced to tiered data IF you get a new handset and sign a new contract.
If you're renewing a current unlimited data plan, you will keep your unlimited data. It will apply to new service contracts only.
I skated on unlimited data for 3 years after a 5 gig cap was placed on sprint's aircards because I kept renewing my original contract.
Now, once you let your contract lapse, without renewing it, you will be subject to changes with your service when you do sign back up.

I don't get where people think verizon is so expensive. Compaired to other carriers vzw is not that much more expensive, and even cheaper in some scenarios. Now boost mobile or cricket may be cheaper but that's like walking into a cadillac dealer and *****ing that the cts-v you're looking at is more then the 1998 Taurus you seen down the street. If you want to deal with sprints ****ty service go with them... I'm sure Walmart has some cheap prepay options too. You are paying for a service, you get what you pay for. You pay 29.99 for unlimited 4g data on your phone and ***** because they want to charge you if you choose to enable a different data service on your phone? So you think for the meisly 30 bucks a month you should be able to use 100gbs of bandwith tethering your pc and seeding 50 torrents? All they want is another 29.99 to tether, and guess what, that's unlimited too! On top of that they gave it to you for free for three months for buying your phone.. I can't wait for teired data. And another FYI, Verizon currently does not charge to use mobile hotspot on their tabs, guess why? Because you pay for teired data, they actually don't care how you you ur data, you bought it! Who needs to use 10 gigs of data on their phone a month? I use my phone constantly for work and play, stream Pandora for hours, and have never hit five gigs... Download all your firmware on ur home WiFi network if you want to download straight to Ur phone, or use Ur data cable ( they gave that to you for free too ) home WiFi not fast enough? Drop it and get Ur 29.99 tethering plan, bet that's cheaper then what Ur paying Ur isp now

If it wasn't going to cost more than my phone's value each month in data charges, you might be right. However, for those of us who actually use the phone for work or anything else with high data usage, the new changes are ridiculous.
If they don't grandfather users, I'll be dropping my family plan. I already pay $250/mo for 5 lines - mine is the only one with high usage (data/voice/txting) due to work.

[Q] Tethering Police?

Has anyone actually been caught by the tethering police? I mean have they sent you a notice or anything?
Also, do you think I would be caught? I have used between 11 to 20 gigs a month for 6 months straight with my previous phone(Tilt2) and now I that I have the Infuse, would they even know If I was tethering or not since I would be using the same amount of data as I previously have?
Any input would be appreciated

I'm not going to get into the "well unlimited is unlimited and why does it matter how I use my unlimited." That's an argument that I feel both sides has a good argument for, so why waste the time.
I have no issues if you download gigs of porn to your phone, month after month. My issue is with the people that tether to excess just because they can. I can't tell you how thankful I am that ATT did lose a good amount of customers to VZW when the iP4 hit their shelves. Now those fanboys are bogging down the VZW network and not ours. Now I can only hope that more of these guys look for greener pastures so my bill stops inflating.
att prepared for the iphone originally with its separate apn and all that. it helped but you saw more iphones with down service than other phone users. really set up a bad name for att. has anybody even bought the iphone on verizon? i remember the launch day being a flop, havent really kept up with apple news since then.

I do not tether on excess just because I can. I do it because I have no other means to connect to the internet and It wouldn't be the same on my phone's browser. Yes it has a flash player plugin, but that doesn't mean I can do everything I can do in a computer environment. If I had access to internet by any other means, then I wouldn't tether from my phone. Agree. If I tether a lot in a month, MAYBE I'll cross 2 gigs. I make a point of keeping my tethering light.
However with the new phone I suspect I'll come closer to that 2gig limit a lot more often. (Fortunately I don't have it, since I'm unlimited.)
But 11-20 gigs/month without paying for tethering is just plain irresponsible. With abuse like that I'm surprised you haven't gotten busted and I wouldn't feel sorry for you if you did.
I had a grandfather plan - $20/mo unlimited data.
I've changed 5 or 6 smartphones since I had it, now on Infuse 4G, I'm getting the sucky-ass AT&T 4G speeds, tether to laptop when needed - no tethering plan.
I don't use that much though, about 2GB/month max.
I asked AT&T rep directly about this - she said they'll never change the plan unless I specifically allow it. She said they can't switch me.
well, there is that tethermanager.apk on stock that seems to report back to AT&T if you're tethering.
then if they feel like it they will text you and say "don't keep doing it or we'll swap you to the tethering plan"
you can freeze that with titanium backup (well you need to be rooted too) and that reactivates the stock tethering stuff built into the phone (both mobile ap and usb tethering)

Well that really isn't helpful(since I have already done all that) but thanks. I'm talking about AT&T's "Tether Police" that monitor data spikes and accuse you of tethering if your data seems different for any other month.
Earlier this year, a At&t added a tethering plan to thousands of accounts based on data usage. They also alerted many more they would do the same. I only know of three people to have this done to them

I've been unlimited for years now, i don't know nor care how much data I use. I can tether if I want, which means if my home internet goes down and I need my pc, guess what... I'm tethering. I give att $200 per month for my phone plan over the past 4 years at lest, I highly doubt they'll piss me off and attach a tether plan to my account.

While what you say isn't exactly what happened they have been flagging a very large percentage iPhone users who have tethered even for a matter of 3 minutes.
I currently have an iPhone 4 (should finally have my INFUSE today) and only one time have tethered and probably for less than 30 seconds just to see if the Cydia app worked. All I did was go to speedtest.net and ran the test 2 or 3 times. That was it. About 2 weeks later I got the WARNING text. Plan was never changed. They only will change it if you ignore their warning(s) and do not call them to "discuss" it as they request in their text.
As for me, traveling in North, Central and South NJ, AT&T 3G is virtually useless. Speeds are terrible and the latency is horrendous. I have no idea how people can actually regularly use tethering. I guess it's better in other areas. Been that way through 3 iPhones over 4+ years so I have no desire to tether anyway.
I think the tethering and data caps are completely separate issues. ATT had a plan, or at least the idea, for tiered data plans long before the iPhone was even capable of tethering without being jailbroken. Tethering plans are complete bull****, and I'm sure the FCC will eventually make them illegal. If you pay for a data connection, you should be able to use it any way you want. It's like ATT trying to charge you for the separate phones in your house (or at least a premium to allow you to use more than just one phone). I also think the tethering police are a joke too. I'm sure (especially since they allow sideloading), that any kind of traffic that can be generating by a computer can be replicated in android.

Here is a new notice from ATT about Tethering! All you people that have unlimited plans and are tethering without a tethering plan this is for you.

Don't abuse your grandfathered data plan and don't get in trouble?
And to all those complaining about "no fair, they changed the rules in the middle of the game": Suck it up. "Unlimited" was never at any point, ever, truly unlimited. Read the ToS/AUP carefully and you'll see...

I bet you let any company bend you right over. At least, that's what it sounds like.
Thanks. Good to know.

Erm... all cell phone companies have a limit on "unlimited" data. Some of us are just intelligent enough to realize that.
We're all "bending over" for the companies...
If anyone loses their unlimited data from this, I bet they could still get it back using the whole iPhone 2g loophole....

Stop data throttling

Does anyone know a way to stop the data throttling that actually works?

One can only wish.
Method that works...
The only method that I know that works is not to exceed your data allocation. Certainly would be nice if we could get around that. But I'll bet any exploit someone could come up with would quickly be foiled by TMO.

That is not really a way around throttling. It just suggests you deal with the data limitations of tmo, Verizon and att. Well...I disagree!
Now, the answer to your original question is, in fact, that you cannot stop tmo's throttling. However, a possible solution to this problem (at least here in the states) is to exercise some of your consumer power and leave these companies. The only major US provider not capping data is SPRINT! Or, you can deal with it by augmenting some of your data usage by using wifi more often. In reality though this is only a problem for the extreme power user. I've never had the issue myself and I use data heavy apps and tasks but I also use wifi a lot (on 5GB cap).
Well I am not willing to go to sprint because all they do is rip people off so I guess I just have to deal with the 5 gig limit.

5 gig
Man, you are a heavy user...!!
The throttling is done by the hardware at each provider - so you would need to hack their systems... Nothing you can do on your phone - really, nothing!!

I called tmo and talked very polite to the retention lady and she put me on the prefered android unlimited data for $20 a month which has no cap I use around 6-7 gb (mostly work) and have never been throttled back

after review... I need to call retention.. lol
From what I read over in the other thread, calling retention would help you get the $20 android preferred plan. Only problem is they still cap it after 5GB. No big deal for me since I was paying $20 for 2GB.
I already have the android preferred plan it is still throttled at 5 gigs.

I called and spoke to a rep and got a full-on description of this whole deal.
First, they're not going to acknowledge the plan exists most often then not because it technically "doesn't exist". I have seen screen shots that say otherwise but it is something they can put on but it still contains a 5gb cap.
IN FACT, and he offered to send me documentation to suffice, the old plans that claimed to be 100% unlimited were also capped... the thing is, no one hardly went over 5gb. I also do not know the parameters on what or how they catch the overage, but he said they were once more liberal with the soft cap then they use to be because they indeed advertised as "unlimited".
Recently they changed their language and they changed how their plans appeared to be more transparent on what their plans actually offered... most data plans were filtered into the 2gb cap territory and some ole faithfuls got "transferred" to a 5gb soft cap "unlimited" plan...
Again, the 5gb cap has always existed...
He did however tell me we could do some changes on my plan, reconfigure it and I could get a 10gb cap for the same price I'm paying now... however, it's on my lunch... and I didn't feel like dealing with it at the moment.
However, I think I'm still verizon bound in November... I'll only have to pay one ETF. To think that my loyalty all this time was based on "wording" of "unlimited everything" was complete popycock.
I've been throttled 2 out of the past 3 months. It's never happened before and I haven't changed my usage habits. It seems unlikely that I would hit 5GB without tethering or using the phone as a hotspot. I call shenanigans!
Wow, I thought we had it bad here....
I am on voda TR, I pay 5 usd a month for unlimited data.... (well technically it is unlimited). First 100mb on hspa+ (thats your 4g in the us) then it is down to 90kbs well the system usually lets 120-130 through.
Been a tmobile customer for 5 years.....would be nice if there retention team was more consistent. Seems some customers get great hookups and some dont. Guess it depends on who you are speaking with and the mood there in

We have a Tmobile call center here in wichita... meaning lots of employees... I decided to break a rule of mine and quiz some of my tmo/friends including 2 leads, a retention rep and a supervisor, and all data plans on Tmobile have been capped to some degree, even while "unlimited".
The preferred android plan can be attached but it will serve no purpose as it's a capped plan as well. Take or leave it... I have no reason to lie to anyone. Sprint is officially the only carrier with a truely unlimited data package.

Keeping in mind that sprint DOES cap their 3g usage at 5gb.
Only their 4g is truly unlimited, which doesn't exist in my area.
