Stop data throttling - HTC Sensation

Does anyone know a way to stop the data throttling that actually works?
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA App

One can only wish.

Method that works...
The only method that I know that works is not to exceed your data allocation. Certainly would be nice if we could get around that. But I'll bet any exploit someone could come up with would quickly be foiled by TMO.

That is not really a way around throttling. It just suggests you deal with the data limitations of tmo, Verizon and att. Well...I disagree!
Now, the answer to your original question is, in fact, that you cannot stop tmo's throttling. However, a possible solution to this problem (at least here in the states) is to exercise some of your consumer power and leave these companies. The only major US provider not capping data is SPRINT! Or, you can deal with it by augmenting some of your data usage by using wifi more often. In reality though this is only a problem for the extreme power user. I've never had the issue myself and I use data heavy apps and tasks but I also use wifi a lot (on 5GB cap).

Well I am not willing to go to sprint because all they do is rip people off so I guess I just have to deal with the 5 gig limit.

5 gig
Man, you are a heavy user...!!
The throttling is done by the hardware at each provider - so you would need to hack their systems... Nothing you can do on your phone - really, nothing!!

I called tmo and talked very polite to the retention lady and she put me on the prefered android unlimited data for $20 a month which has no cap I use around 6-7 gb (mostly work) and have never been throttled back

after review... I need to call retention.. lol

From what I read over in the other thread, calling retention would help you get the $20 android preferred plan. Only problem is they still cap it after 5GB. No big deal for me since I was paying $20 for 2GB.

I already have the android preferred plan it is still throttled at 5 gigs.

I called and spoke to a rep and got a full-on description of this whole deal.
First, they're not going to acknowledge the plan exists most often then not because it technically "doesn't exist". I have seen screen shots that say otherwise but it is something they can put on but it still contains a 5gb cap.
IN FACT, and he offered to send me documentation to suffice, the old plans that claimed to be 100% unlimited were also capped... the thing is, no one hardly went over 5gb. I also do not know the parameters on what or how they catch the overage, but he said they were once more liberal with the soft cap then they use to be because they indeed advertised as "unlimited".
Recently they changed their language and they changed how their plans appeared to be more transparent on what their plans actually offered... most data plans were filtered into the 2gb cap territory and some ole faithfuls got "transferred" to a 5gb soft cap "unlimited" plan...
Again, the 5gb cap has always existed...
He did however tell me we could do some changes on my plan, reconfigure it and I could get a 10gb cap for the same price I'm paying now... however, it's on my lunch... and I didn't feel like dealing with it at the moment.
However, I think I'm still verizon bound in November... I'll only have to pay one ETF. To think that my loyalty all this time was based on "wording" of "unlimited everything" was complete popycock.

I've been throttled 2 out of the past 3 months. It's never happened before and I haven't changed my usage habits. It seems unlikely that I would hit 5GB without tethering or using the phone as a hotspot. I call shenanigans!

Wow, I thought we had it bad here....
I am on voda TR, I pay 5 usd a month for unlimited data.... (well technically it is unlimited). First 100mb on hspa+ (thats your 4g in the us) then it is down to 90kbs well the system usually lets 120-130 through.

Been a tmobile customer for 5 years.....would be nice if there retention team was more consistent. Seems some customers get great hookups and some dont. Guess it depends on who you are speaking with and the mood there in

We have a Tmobile call center here in wichita... meaning lots of employees... I decided to break a rule of mine and quiz some of my tmo/friends including 2 leads, a retention rep and a supervisor, and all data plans on Tmobile have been capped to some degree, even while "unlimited".
The preferred android plan can be attached but it will serve no purpose as it's a capped plan as well. Take or leave it... I have no reason to lie to anyone. Sprint is officially the only carrier with a truely unlimited data package.

Keeping in mind that sprint DOES cap their 3g usage at 5gb.
Only their 4g is truly unlimited, which doesn't exist in my area.

Tiered data coming 6/26...?

My VZW source told me about a new Point-of-Sale system being implemented for corporate Verizon stores (a nationwide rollout as far as I know, but I could be wrong on that assumption). Regardless, this new POS system goes live June 26th. In the online training for the new POS system, Verizon Employees saw some mention given to new calling plans + tiered data implementation coming at the same time as the new POS system rollout.
What I was told is this: calling plans are being renamed, probably changed (in terms of text/voice minute allowance, price, inclusion [or not] of data, etc.) FOR SURE the plans are being renamed, and it's not a far stretch of the imagination to think that this is the perfect time for VZW to roll out new data plans. The reason for that thought is the fact that VZW has been talking about a summer debut for tiered data plans for a while now. Well, summer is here... so it's about time for this to happen.
No specific details have been given at this time, likely no one will know much until the day before or day of the announcement. But at least we have a time frame for this. If there is going to be an end of unlimited data, I predict it will come with the roll out of new calling plans.
Also, this makes sense in light of the July 6th extended tethering promotion. In the event someone wants to keep tethering after July 6th on their Thunderbolt, it will require a data plan change (adding a paid monthly tethering plan). This is one way for Verizon to force people into the new calling plans. If they are capping data or upping prices for LTE/4G devices (or across the board for all devices - who knows?), this is a great way for Verizon to steal people away from their unlimited data plans. You want tethering? OK. Change your plan to one of our "new" plans with tiered (capped) data and you can have tethering!
I think this "free" tethering was a cold, money grubbing calculation from the beginning. I digress...
Anyway, just passing along what I heard today. Anyone else hear anything similar to this today? I could have some details wrong, and though this is clearly just speculation, I don't want to obfuscate the truth if someone has it on good authority something here isn't true or I have some of the details a little wrong.

As for tiered data, they can pry my unlimited 4G from my cold, lifeless hands. Or I'm going to Sprint
That link is broken for me. Was the story about the issues with the Charge's hotspot being unreliable? I know the previous extension was supposedly because of the 24 hour EHRPD network outage that affected so many Thunderbolt users.

Sorry, it worked for me earlier today I just assumed it still worked..
It was something about how the Free Press filed a complaint with the FCC saying that Verizon shouldn't be allowed to tell us how to use our data, etc and that the conditions with which the 700 mhz spectrum was bought somewhat prevent Verizon from charging for it.
And no, but the Charge did receive an update a few days ago fixing their hotspot.
Ah, I forgot about the free press filing. Good to know the Charge was updated, too.

For a vast majority of users have a tiered plan with bucket data (tethering included) would actually be a good thing. For alot of users who frequent this, and other, forums it would not. If the prices are not totally outrageous, ie $20/GB, I see no problem with VZW implimenting a tiered system that included tethering. Its for users like many of us on XDA that it will be a problem, those who regularly go over 2, 3, 4, 5 etc GB a month by constantly flashing, downloading and redownloading apps and the power tetherers (those who play Xbox etc while tethered). I know people who barely hit 500 megs a month on their data plans, so something along the lines of 1GB for a reasonable price would be perfect for them.

My wife was hitting .17 gb with her old blackberry and now uses about 3 gb with my old Droid X, I used 6-8 on the X and 8-10 on the Thunderbolt on average, and have went up to 16 gb in one month on the X. I have never tethered. Maybe the shared data will even out prices if they don't grandfather us in (after the T-bolt)
I really think that until they announce plans/prices for the tiered system people are just over reacting to it. Who knows, it might actually be a good thing for them to roll it out. Yeah yeah yeah i know "but we haz unlimited" thats well and good. but if your like me and have more than one smart phone line with it, and one of those lines using 200 megs a month...well its not worth it to have unlimited. I would rather have a small tiered plan for that, or hell even a family data plan with bucket data alotment. But we all know how people are, they have to have their unlimited data plan no matter what, even if they are only using 100 megs.
There is already a $15 plan, and its been around for awhile, for all the people using very little data

Prob for people only websurf and youtube?
how about internationa version?? not the T-mobile version?
I have the $10 plan (2 actually.. family plan) and think its great. We are light data users and love not being forced in to more expensive data plans (vs. any other carrier) and the fact that we still get data even after the 200MB.. it just might be slower. Perfect for us. Its *THE* reason we are TMo customers. At $30 dataplans, my corporate discount would be much better on Verizon.
I'm using the 200mb plan - honestly I'm on WiFi all day at work and home. Last month I used 5 mg...I feel like I need to set aside time to actually use it.
200mb wouldn't last me 2 days... perhaps not even 1 lol!
anyway, you guys do know about the prefered android unlimited plan right?
5gb cap, $20 a month.
so does international version of Sensation can do that bypass?
I use 200MB in 1 day. pff
That is the plan I am on now. I'm trying to bust pass the limit to see just how slow the restriction is. Right now I am using 2g and I find that fine, so I am going to wait and see.

I also have the old "unlimited data" plan. When I upgraded phones. They tried to switch me. For years I've been able to keep my data plan. When I got the sensation. I had the rep repeat to me what plans I had. It was over the phone and conversation was recorded. I had him repeat to me my plans and he said "looks like you have unlimited data" and i told him "I have what?" and he said "Unlimited data" I said Thank you and to please note it on the account.
I got a text for throttled down connection. Called back in. Spoke with rep, tech, than supervisor. Had him repeat my plan. "Unlimited data"
I ended the conversation saying no where does "Unlimited data" says you can limit my speed or anything for that fact. Supervisor agreed and took off throttle. everything is back to normal and have no noticed any data issues or speed issues.

No offense, but I have to call BS... I have heard hundreds of reports from reps and end-users alike that there is no switch to turn off throttling. Moreover, it's clear as day in the terms of service that they will throttle as soon as you hit your data limit. Additionally, you have truly unlimited data, the first 200mb, 2gb, 5gb, or 10gb at full speed, and then the remainder of the month at dial-up speeds. All plans are unlimited, you are just paying for how much full speed service you want before you get throttled.
If you were right, we could just pay $10 for 200mb and then complain about the throttle when it kicks in and have full 4g speed all month for $10. Would be nice, but you're dreaming.
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA App
Nope. no BS. when you get a "200mb plan" that's your plan. 200mb. Unlimited is just that. Unlimited. They've changed data plans around and have put in many tiers. None of which are "Unlimited"
Just glad I get to keep my old plan. this was from like sidekick 2 or whatever it was. I know I can't tether however. That is an add on apparently. some how they know...

I love that plan! I have it for me and the Mrs. It's what keeps us with TMobile.

Almost left AT&T Today

If you have unlimited data, beware! They tried to get me on a capped data plan after upgading to the skyrocket. The floor manager was saying they dont have anything in the system for unlimited LTE, so i would need to switch to the 2GB plan. After *****ing and talking to the highest floor manager, she was finally "able" to find a data code that would allow me unlimited LTE and still get my corporate discount.
I then proceeded to complain about the phone being $100 less in other markets and after some heavy complaining, i got the $100 credited to my account.
Its sad that a customer of 7 years, whos has unlimited data for over 3 years and has multiple lines had to work so hard to ge what i would call "fair". Hour of my life wasted, but atleast they came through.

thats actually a great question, a franchise would make money by ripping you off where as a corporate store would have been fine with the unlimited plan....
the 100 credit though, i think even corporate stores would give you a hard time. so good job!
Glad you got it in the end. I went to a corporate store and I didn't have to say anything and I got the 150 price point and they switched me to LTE unlimited without me asking.
Don't worry..they'll get their way in the end..they throttle you to 100kbps once you hit 5gigs...so you are essentially in a tiered plan anyway.
In general, AT&T has horrible customer service. Especially compared to Verizon. I almost left AT&T couple of times myself. I guess you get what you pay for.

Yes, i went to a corporate store. Its the only place that knows how to handle my corporate discount. The phone is $250 in phoenix. And we don't have LTE.
I also got the throttling text not even 24 hours after I got the phone. I used 9.8GB last month, but it was all on my N1. I average 8-10GB per month as I stream a lot and not around wifi. I never got a warning about my data usage in the past.

I have an infuse 4g currently. If I buy a skyrocket from Craigslist and put my SIM in it, would it automatically show me an option for unlimited LTE data in my OLAM?? Or, do I have to call them. Surprisingly Google maps doesn't use a lot of data unless running in satellite mode. Pandora and Netflix are culprits. Just FYI for those who fear capping. On a sseparate note, how's the Pandora/Netflix performance after getting capped??
I read in another thread that if you get capped, you can switch to another apn, 4g hspa apn, or 3g apn, and you are not throttled until you hit top 5% in that apn. Useful info for people getting throttled.

I also got the throttling text not even 24 hours after I got the phone. I used 9.8GB last month, but it was all on my N1. I average 8-10GB per month as I stream a lot and not around wifi. I never got a warning about my data usage in the past.

May have been a weird system glitch. I have had a few customers come in with this same issue. Or maybe a weird coincidence.

thats actually a great question, a franchise would make money by ripping you off where as a corporate store would have been fine with the unlimited plan....
the 100 credit though, i think even corporate stores would give you a hard time. so good job!

actually the unlimited data plan would pay the authorized retailer more since it has a higher monthly charge... just because its an authorized retailer doesnt meant they are going to rip you off. Actually if you want to get picky about it, you are more likely to get screwed in a Corp. store due to their crazy quotas they have to hit each month to keeps their jobs unlike most retailers that dont have quotas..... I know this how.... I have worked for both.... do stay away from the kiosks in malls.... those guys are VErY shady....lol
Hey, I got the AT&T text within 48 hrs of owning the Skyrocket. Maybe a system glitch. With the infuse i was using anywhere from 12 to 13gb of data. I am barely at 3 gb and they already sent me a text. Has anyone been throttled?. What are the speeds your are getting?. I am in a LTE zone and I will hate it if they capped me at EDGE speeds
i've been throttled and got the text at about 4GB, I'm now throttled down to 100k/100k with unlimited lte, please voice your experience in my other thread.

I don't see what the hate is with AT&T...
I currently work for them in the Corporate retail store.
Our program that we use has been updated and unless the RSC cares, there is NO manager in store that can fix this and has to be called in to customer care that uses a back end system. (Only way it can occur in store is if the manager has been there over 5 years, and had training in the old system.)
Just be lucky the RSC had a question about it instead of just clicking next and not saying anything... Problem runs rampant with RSCs that have been there for awhile. They just don't care.
I started with and Iphone unlimited data plan. Switched to Android.I got my Skyrocket today and they tried to get me to take their limited data plan. I said no way I'm keeping my unlimited data plan. I pay $30 a month for unlimited. I have 3 lines on my family plan, all have unlimited data and I plan to keep it that way as long as possible.

AT&T Clarifies Its Policy On Data Throttling, Allows 5GB Of Unaltered Data Flow For L

AT&T Clarifies Its Policy On Data Throttling, Allows 5GB Of Unaltered Data Flow For L
With mobile data usage continuing to skyrocket and the availability of spectrum scarce, AT&T, like other wireless companies, manages its network in the most fair way possible so that we can provide the best possible mobile broadband experience for all our customers.
How we’re managing the network only affects a small minority of the heaviest smartphone data users still on unlimited plans. Put another way, this does not impact more than 95 percent of our smartphone customers.
Our unlimited plan customers have told us they want more clarity around how the program works and what they can expect. Here’s what customers need to know:
Customers with a 3G or 4G smartphone – who also still have our unlimited data plan – will see speeds reduced if they use 3GB (gigabytes) of data or more in a billing cycle. Speeds will return to normal at the start of the next billing cycle. For context, less than 5 percent of smartphone customers use more than 3GB per month.
For customers with a 4G LTE smartphone – who also still have our unlimited data plan – data speeds will be reduced if usage is 5GB (gigabytes) or more in a billing cycle. Speeds will return to normal at the start of the next billing cycle
Click to collapse
Customers will get a text message from us before experiencing a change in speed.
Even with reduced data speeds, these customers will still be able to email and surf the web, and continue to use an unlimited amount of data each month.
Not impacted by this program, launched last year, are customers on our tiered data plans.
The reason reduced speeds only apply to unlimited smartphone customers is because their data usage is significantly higher than those on tiered plans. For example, in January, the top 5 percent of our unlimited data plan customers used an average of over 50 percent more data than the top 5 percent of customers on tiered plans.
Because spectrum is limited and data usage continues to soar, we manage our network this way to be as fair as possible and so we can provide the best possible mobile broadband experience to everyone.
We encourage all of our customers to use Wi-Fi whenever possible – especially when watching video, which is the most data-intensive activity.
That’s because data activity over Wi-Fi does not count against the threshold for unlimited customers that triggers reduced data speeds or against customers’ tiered data plans. Customers can find out more at www.att.com/datainfo
But some people were getting throttled even when they didn't go over 3gb. I believe they shouldn't throttle for the whole billing cycle. Only when someone is abusing it when there's a lot of traffic in the network, and restore it after that period. But that would probably require a lot of work. I dunno just my opinion.
Never been throttled, I don't use a lot of data.

Did you read it?? That all just changed.
Well.. That sucks. Only one month did I use 6 gigs. Typically don't use over 1 though. Meh. Let the angry comments come in. I'd be pissed if there wasn't wifi at my house, and I lived in good cell reception, and depended on it. ATT.. You're full of crap.
Atleast LTE users get a break. I'll get an LTE phone next time around the block.

It's still bull. I bought my phone because AT&T said that I was buying a 4G phone and said I was told how fast it was.
They put YouTube, a web browser, an email app and a text messaging app, just to name a few, on my phone.

You're still getting unlimited data. When you signed up, did the contract guarantee you unlimited data at speeds greater than or equal to XXmb/s, or just unlimited data?
Maybe a better way to "CLARIFY" is to change the Plan name from UNlimited to " LIMITED "
That would clear it all up would'nt it?
Geez....ATT you are way too big.

using data with limited speed is NOT unlimited.
using data with limited speed BY hardware specs, however, is different.
basically, people should just sue att for false advertisement.

No. Lol. There's a flaw where if you had the original iphone then you could set it up in iTunes and get unlimited data.
In two days, at the beginning of a cycle, when I was on my 2 gig planned (had just got the phone a month or two before..) It decided to go through the roof with my usage. 2 gigs. 2 days...

So what qualifies as a "LTE phone"? Is the Infuse not an LTE phone??
And does anyone know if this 3GB cap just started?
Because this month I got throttled at 2040mb ... which is... roughly.. 2GB.. right.
I think 5GB sounds fair for an "unlimited" (limited) plan.
I would never go over that!... 3GB... I hover around that every month for sure.

So you do have a service agreement. A contract. I can guarantee that if you've gotten a subsidized phone from them since your iPhone that you either signed or clicked through a new contract binding you to updated agreements but keeping your unlimited plan.

Here's the deal. Less than 5% of AT&T users have unlimited data. They want the unlimited people gone. They are trying to monetize power-users while managing bandwidth (which is a finite resource) to keep the average users happy. If you had a business and had to choose between keeping 5% of your customers happy, or 95% of your customers happy... you would make the same choice. These decisions aren't about the users today... it's about 2015 when the average smartphone user will use alot more data... and there will be more smartphone users.... etc, etc.
Not saying I condone these decisions... but after all they are a business. They have a finite resource (bandwidth) and have to make as much profit as possible with that finite resource. Bandwidth doesn't grow on trees, and neither does money. End of story.

Post your unlimited data usage thus far!

I've had this phone less than 2 weeks, grandfathered into vzw unlimited data. Needless to say I think vzw is going to hate me...

I'm on virgin in canada and last month i used 42gb on my unlimited plan...
no fair i was on t-mobiles $20/month plan with 10gb/month and they 'changed' the plan without notice. so now i'm stuck with 5gb...
I'm only at about 1g use right now, work and home wifi (poor signal area) has been keeping my mobile data use down since I got this phone. I'll probably use about 3gigs next month though. Btw, I can see this thread creating some tension with those who don't have unlimited.

No wonder why they are eliminating unlimited, what the heck do you do on your phone to use 28Gb? (tethering i assume)
haha nice. last semester in college, my wired connection wasn't working so i had to 'illegally' tether my atrixs' hspa+ for a week. used about 15gb in a week to watch live streams of the us open. thank god for unlimited data
with the extra ram this phone makes actual real life data speeds sooooo much faster than my other lte phones could do. I'm at 39 gigs so far with billing cycle ending the 29th. And that's without even having the gs3 the whole time, wonder what ill get to next month? Btw no tethering here, I just really like watching HD video

Not too bad methinks..
I have to laugh at all the people who say a few of us who use high amounts of data is why a carrier will remove unlimited data for everyone. So they feel bitter at us for ruining it for everyone else and would rather blame us than their service provider, since its easier.
Oh please, don't you think these carriers would have just throttled or kicked off us few users, instead of forcing tiered plans on all their customers? Its all because of further maximizing profit, not because of us.
Doesn't bother me at all, I still have unlimited data just can't see how people are able to use that much data on a phone in a month.
Must have to have the phone plugged in all the time.
Most I have ever been able to do is 13 GB. I really had to try for that though.
Since July 9th.:
554 MB on Verizon
Since June 24th:
5.58 GB over wi-fi

lol yes i believe i do. luckily i elected to buy the version of the galaxy s 3 that gets preference over others on the data network so sorry i guess everyone will have to wait for me to finish my download before its their turn. best decision i ever made, and to think i actually almost bought the gs3 that you have that gives the busy signal when others are using the network. man im glad i dodged that bullet haha
all sarcasm aside, has anyone ever actually had a problem with using verizons network that can be attributed to data hogs? this isnt 2007 and im not in att using an iphone. big deal, i use a lot of data that i pay for so what. any other user on verizon canuse the exact same amoutn of data as i choose to use bc verizon doesnt throttle the 4g speeds, youll just have to pay more than my price for it. dont hate those of us lucky enough to use all the data we want without paying any overage unless you also go around hating every verizon employee for getting a company discount on the same sevice you pay for. also, those of us on verizon who no longer have the unlimited data plan have access to a discount on upgrades that the unlimited users dont have the smae access to but we sure dont go around flaming others for only having to pay $199 for our $599 phones. every thing is a trade off

Yay for forced data limits/throttle in the future. Vzw doesn't guarantee any "grandfathering". It says right in the contract they can change terms on you and it gives you a free out to go to other carriers. The whole –look at what I can do is quite childish. Whatever.
Heck I use 30gb at home on Cox between two computers and a ps3 and pay for 50gb

A guy over on the Rezound forums hit 1TB. I'm sitting at about 9GB this month.
And for the people bleating about this being why they did away with unlimited data--no. Just shut up. They did it out of pure greed. LTE is cheap, and for every person using 30gb there's 10 people using 500mb. Verizon might be losing money on some customers, but in the aggregate, they were still making money hand over fist, even with unlimited data. But they can make more with shared/tiered. Guess which they went with?
I'm normally around wifi except when I go workout so I rarely break 2gb. Even so I have no problems with data hogs. I've worked a number of years at an isp and I can tell you data hogs are not the problem unless if the network engineers are total idiots. A properly managed network will prevent heavy users from bogging down the network during peak usage.
But many of you guys buy right into the carrier's manufactured bandwidth crisis so they can justify charging $15 per gb.
