HTC Sensation auto silent for no reason! - HTC Sensation

Hi guys,
I got a 3 days old sensation, and for the past 3 days it keeps going to auto silent mode, (wont ring, no alarm, games & music all no sound) even my notification and volume is max.
The problem goes away after I make a call and it will comeback again anytime.
I only installed some popular apps (known for no issue) such ass Whatapps, Wiki, Angry bird, Dictionary and some games for my toddler.
I am still good for 7 days exchange policy, but I hope I could fix the issue, having installed screen protector and all, i wish to keep this set
Anyone can help me?
Thanks!

Some games are not compatible with Sensation and caused a loss of sound. I have to try the game Talking tom cat or some similar games ( Talking.....) and causing the whole system sound. You only need to uninstall that game and restart the device >>> The device works correctly again

Good to know, thanks for the tip.

seems to be a common problem and there are a few threads on here about it. some think it's incompatible apps but I don't have any of the ones that are ever listed & I get it. the sure way to get sound back without restarting is just as you do, make a call, I call voicemail, & then it'll come back.
If you look, your phone is locked in media volume & that's the issue.

Thanks for the reply guys...
I found the culprit, yes! ancola66 is right! it was the TALKING GINA, got it uninstalled and all fine.

Auto silent for no reason HTC Sensation
Heya,
Thought I'd post this in response to the solutions. It may be an application that's causing the problem but I tried all that and removed applications (none of whihc were games - iplayer type stuff) and reset the phone (factory reset) and still nothing.
Then I decided to plug in my headphones to see if that output worked. It did and when I unplugged them, voila, the speaker suddenly worked again!!
Morale: plug in some headphones if you have this problem before doing anything else.. It may solve it..
Hope this helps!

Auto silent for no reason on Sensation
Hey again,
It went silent for a reason when I wanted to play the HTC Music. I tried the headphone thing and no joy. But went into youtube and started something playing then did the headphone thing and the speaker's back on.
I will never understand this, but it seems to work for me.

QTEK 2020 SOUND .... NO SOUND ... SOUND ..... NO SOUND HELP

My qtek 2020 has a mind of its own.
There are days when the sound works (mediaplayer or phone) and there are days when you can press play in mediaplayer but you hear no sound, or you phone someone but they cant hear you and you cant hear them.
Sometimes i put the qtek on the table and let it play some music and it would do that for 1 hour or 4 hours but then suddenly it stops and maybe when you leave it alone it continues further later on. ???
Now here comes the funny thing when its stops playing and i put it on its cradel there still is no sound but when i press stop and then play again (in its cradel) then it starts playing again. When i take it of it keeps playing till a press stop (witch is normal ) but when i press play again there is no more sound. until ..... you get it i think.
Who can solve this one.
ps when i use headphones i always have sound.
But is very annoying because this is my main telephone and i need to be evialable(was that spelt wright?)
..i got the same problem today....
I'm having the same problem, infact i was just going to post about this and then in saw this post
I have an imate JAM and am having the same problem.. the sound suddenly disappears. Then returns. Then goes off again. Media player shows that the music file is playing but i can't hear anything. Adjusting the sound also doesn't make any difference. I uninstalled/reinstalled a lot of programmes...but still same problem. Also, this started happening when i was playing Jawbreaker (Doh!). Just out of the blue i thought i should try this game and there.. it started giving me sound bugs.....
This can be very serious because now i think it could be a virus.
Why ? I reset my pda so it was clean and then i used it without putting any software in it and it workt without a problem .
As soon as i connected to the pc with acitvesync and i used it one hour later it happend again.
So maybe it is a software thing ? Now my college who has a S100 has the same problem.
Of course this makes your pda totaly useless as without sound a phone is worth nothing.
Whe really need help here so solv this.

Audio Crackling/Audio stutter when screen off after 3.1 Update

All,
I noticed a couple possible defects after upgrading to 3.1 manually.
1. When playing audio from certain applications (XMP for Android for instance) The Audio cuts out shortly after the screen turns off, and then halts for a period of time before coming back shortly, then cuts out again.
2. Once you turn the screen back on, there is a distinct crackling in the audio.
Workaround:
1. Turn screen back on (get the crackling)
2. Unplug the 3.5mm audio jack
3. Play music from the speakers
4. Plug back in the 3.5mm audio jack
Anyone else seeing these issues with other audio applications?
Yep, I had the crackling and long pauses start happening today after the FOTA update.
Seems to happen (more often?) when applications interrupt an audio stream. For instance, listening to music and get an IM or email.
Yeah I had issues with this as well afer updating to 3.1...I saw in another thread that doing a "hard reboot" will fix the issue and has seemed to work for me so far. Hold the power button down for 10-15 sec until the unit reboots.
same problem
I have the same problem as well. The audio stops functioning properly when the screen times out or when I lock the device with the power button. The weird thing is that this behaviour is not consistent for all apps.
For example, "Music" stops only at the end of the song. From the "3.1 ROM issues" thread, other users are experiencing this as well. In contrast, in the apps "Listen" and "Audible", almost as soon as the screen goes off or I lock it, the audio stops, starting after some 30 seconds, halting again after 10 seconds. It repeats this cycle a few times and then stops completely. If I lit the screen by hitting the power button, the audio resumes with crackling noises as mentioned in the original posts.
Also, hard reset didn't work. I am tempted to do a factory reset except that I don't really know what's going on and I don't know if that'd fix it!
UPDATE: I found the following workaround solutions:
1- Winamp works flawlessly for songs, not a peep or hitch!
2- BeyondPod is working fairly well for podcasts. (It has paused once after 11 minutes so far.)
I did the fota update.
and I've the the crackling. Sucky.
me too. Hope they get an update out to fix this asap. Extremely annoying bug.
Would like to add I am also experiencing this issue although mine didn't start till a couple days after the update to 3.1. A hard reset works for a little while but the issue eventually presents itself again. Might be due to a caching issue with the music player?
Anyone try another music player?
I discovered the crackling noise problem last night.
At first I thought the FLAC songs were recorded from a dirty vinyl record.
I also discovered the problem where the Music app does not continue to the next song when listening with the screen turned off. How stupid is that.
These are two big problems that ASUS needs to address ASAP.
I am already annoyed by the pop sound when turning the Transformer on and whenever any sound to the speaker (Headphones are fine) is played after a long pause.
They must have used a really cheap sound chip in the Transformer.
Yes I can confirm the same problems with google listen. Have tried the hard reset but it doesn't really help very much. Things worked fine after the restart, but as soon as the screen turned off, then the audio paused, and began to crackle, then more pauses. It is almost as if some part of the system is in some sort of low power mode and is not able to feed the data at the required data rate...

I believe this could be exactly the problem. I have not yet gotten my TF, but looking forward to one greatly. However, I get exactly this problem on my Galaxy Tab 7" WHEN using setCPU to add a profile that scales the CPU down when screen is off. It sounds to me as if ASUS has added some sort of governer/scaling that does this. I could be wrong of course This is just based on reading, and personal experience

Yes. I get a lot of weird little problems with the Tab 7'' when setCPU scales clock speed down too far, including random reboots. I guess that's the sacrifice Asus made to give the TF such a tremendous battery life.

I don't know about "tremendous"
More like pretty good...
i can confirm that i have this issue using google music app. I previously purchased PowerAMP (arguably the best android music app) and no problems whatsoever when the screen goes off.
I do like the google music app as it seems like a truly lightweight player but its still in beta stage and needs a bit of work.
I just discovered something. The problem does not occur for my Transformer when the unit is plugged in!
So it must be power management problem, the question is how to fix it?
Hey guys, loving the xda forums btw, much love. I have a acer iconia a500 16gb, and same problem here:
Using Acer_a500_4.010.13_com_gen2
The default Music player is buggy and crashed fairly often, the audio stopping when screen turns off and stopping intermittently is also present on iconia with the default music player and the others as well.
The audio crackling is also present under same conditions.
To add insult to injury, sometimes when i connect a headphones the speakers dont turn off. And if i play with he "dolby mobile" settings, the sound on my headphones get really tinny untill i unplug the headphones and plug them back in, or i reboot the sys in some cases.
I just thought I should add to this thread that I have the same problems on my Acer Iconia A500. It consistently only finishes the song after I turn the screen off then it waits MINUTES to start the next song. I only occasionally have problems with the crackle sound. I had the crackling a lot when I first got it but it doesn't seem to happen as often any more. It doesn't seem to happen when I use doubleTwist but I really wish that the STOCK APPLICATION (which I like the best) would work...
Is there ANY way to fix this stuff? I mean even downgrading to like 3.0 or something. I like to use my tablet to play on my stereo system and I don't enjoy having to effing go back every time I want to play the next song. I also don't want to leave the screen on all the time and murder the battery.
I have the same thing happening on my A500 (running the ASUS PRIME ROM, though). When the screen turns off, anything audio related gets really skippy.
apparently there's some sort of setting build in for the cpu to underclock to the point of not being able to continue running the music application when the screen turns off. (that's me guessing it could be wrong) It always happens with stock music app though it didnt happen when in 3.0.
I installed winamp and doubletwist and both played nonstop.
Also i noticed that if you had music in your external sd and you open music app (also happened with winamp) and remove the sd the applications wont work anymore (thy always fc)unless you install the sd back (that is if you had your music library in the sd even if you also have it internally)
I tried moving the music to the internal storage but the error persist. the only way to get rid of it is formatting the tablet and passing the music to the tablet before running the apps. However if you install the sd and you happen to have music and music app open, youre screw again.
thats the error ive been having and im stuck with a 16gb sd in the tablet to hear music, (which i find it sucking cause my tablet is 32gb)
any suggestions?

Suddenly no sound

This morning I woke up and the screen of my One S was on. When I checked why it was on I've seen that my alarm went off but without any sound.
I've checked my settings if I put my phone on silent mode but it wasn't. So I checked if I can play music, ringtones, videos etc. but still no sound.
I can talk on the phone no problem but the speakers for music, ringtones, notifications etc, just won't work.
I tried a factory reset and installed my custom rom again without any luck...
Any ideas how to fix this or do I have to send my phone in to get it fixed?
haven't had this happen, but did you try fix permissions from recovery
otherwise, if no one else has a solution you could try a nandroid restore
or, better--wipe all including System and reload fresh. Factory Reset won't clear System
or, just wipe System and reflash rom, I don't think data, which Factory reset wipes, would be the issue. not sure

Mine did the same thing, if you press the lower part together you will hear it come back for a bit and then stop again. A wire has come loose inside is my guess, if you are a heavy data user and heated it up maybe? But I called tmob and got a replacement phone sent to me, but I am still upset about it since I only got this phone in april and I already broke it.
Same thing happening to me. I noticed that when I'm in a call though and I play music. The sound works but when I try to play any audio without being in a call it will not work

I am not quite sure whether its hard or software related because you cam hear sound while in call but it got broken while my device was turned off being in a package....
Is there a way to route the sounds throughout the upper speaker?
Possible solution
Hi guys, my girfriend has an Htc One S and suddently this night the phone started to sound at verry low volume when she received a phone call. After a close inspection i realized that the sound didn't come from the lower speaker but from the ear (upper) speaker. Strange,no? I've tried the settings, reseting the phone ,but nothing... A after a while i've tried one last thing that actualy worked and spare us from a trip to the service. You have to place a call on the One S , answer that call., turn the speaker on and off again in the call then close the call. And the magic happens. Your sound is back again in the lower speaker(the loud speaker). All this indicates that it's a software problem. It's the first phone that i've heard reproducing the ringtone or player sound in the ear speaker. Hope this helps all you out there with a sound problem. Cris

no SOUND!
Hi there!
Iam having a strange problem with all sense roms viper 2.2, trickdroid, etc. and a can't fix it and i really need some help!
the sound of the phone stops working, i have the original viper kernel, never changed, the sound does not work every where!!! the mp3 player, games, notification, and the keyboard tones when dialing a number... and this time it only took about 2h after a new clean install of the rom..... ? ? ? (iam lost)
i don'd now why it appends, but when it does, i have do restore a back up that works or re install the rom.
this as happened before, and i made a clean install i have tried wipe the phone app, wipe the caches, fix permissions,.....
please does some one have a clue?
EDIT 1:
what can i do? i always used venom rom, and all ok, now since my phone came form htc support, because of the home button problem (they changed the screen, battery and the chassis, and they fixed)
now i cant use the venom i have done 3 clean install and nothing(( ..... iam going to try the TrickDroid_9.1.0 and see, if it happens again iam screed
EDIT 2:
i notice that if i clean caches and install the bulletproof kernel it stays ok, for about 5m, then the sound goes way... ?!? there must be something that is interfering with the sound services?
just found out in other foruns, that if you press volume all down, and them volume up, the sound starts working again, but some minutes later, the same no sound
http://forums.androidcentral.com/htc...d-speaker.html now iam going to remove every app and see if theres one making the problem ... it will take some time . if anyone as a clue please help!
just removed all apps , the problem precisest.... goig to try trickdroid and see what appends, does anyone have a clue!?!?!??!
EDIT 3:
i tried the stock kernel and the bulletproff, removed all apps, tried 4 clean viperone s installs with multiples recovery's, tried a factory reset from the bootloader with the original recovery, tried with the trickdoid. and nothing works!!
what can i do please some one!?
no sound, after 5m of fresh install ? tried all roms, recovery, etc
some one please help! my problem is not with this rom, it is prefect., after-all my problem is bigger .
i have tried aosp roms and sense roms, i have tried different recovery's, and kernels, removed all apps, with all i have the problem...
a minutes after a clean install the sound suddenly stops working, especially if go to the dialer
i have to install a new rom or a restore, but +/- 5m after fresh install, the problem starts again
when i relock the booloader, with a twrp backup of the original rom untouched it shows a "security warning error" ? and wallways reboots to the bootloader
some one please!?!
Sorry for my Bad english. Maybe the connection of the speaker is not really fit. The speaker is mounting on the back bottom side and fitting with two flexible contacts. Try to press or shaking the cover when you get sound after it something in there is broking or not fit.

Mine had the same problem. I notice that the sound quality from the Rear speaker deteriorates day after day and so i took out the back cover and put it back again the sound seems working fine but on while playing music it just suddenly stopped and since then no sound at all from the speaker i even took out the back cover reinsert it again and again but to no avail. No SOUND.
wipe cache
This is a problem from flashing. If you reboot into TWRP and do wipe data once or twice (not just Dalvik and the cache, but also the .android_data), the sound will work. You could also try rebooting the phone.
I had this problem with the builds from the first week in July. I would just flash a later build (from TWRP be sure to wipe at least 3 times) then flash the latest build.

update
I was cheking a new speaker the loud version of eBay when I turn on the phone no sound I check everything and I see some scuff on the metal where the speaker touch the board I clean all and disconnect the battery for 20 seconds and the sound come back I hope this can help
****** also check the upper speaker my cel has alot of dust the problem its you need to tear down the phone its very simple are just are 8 screws 4 little flexes just be careful whit the camera glass hehehee.
i think when the dust block the conection whit the board this fails also the lower speaker do the same problem.

Sound Bug - Bottom speaker sound going through ear speaker/not working at all.

Occasionally the sound in the bottom speakers will stop working and some apps will play through the ear speaker instead. When this happens Google Music, Youtube and some other apps won't work at all. For example pressing play in either of those apps does nothing, as in the play button never changes to a pause button. My alarm app on the other hand plays through the ear speaker instead of not working at all. The ear speaker sound volume is very quiet and doesn't appear to be controlled by the media volume either.
The only remedy that I've been able to find for this is a phone reboot
Wanted to bump this thread -
I originally thought this issue was related to Bluetooth because I use multiple bluetooth devices, but this has happened again recently when I didn't use any Bluetooth devices.
I have the exact same issue, and it's occurrence is random. This started happening a month back. I'm guessing this is due to some software update or something, but its really annoying and the only fix is a reboot.
Anyone has any ideas, whats going on ?
It's been happening multiple times a day lately! It's gotten substantially worse over the past month. I was watching a video, sent a text and when I went to resume it wouldn't play - low and behold the bug came back.. definitely appears to be completely random.

This problem is driving me crazy
I have the exact same issue. Factory reset and update to newest firmware didn't help any idea?
Wash your phone. And wait till it dry.
I (and other person that I know) have the same issues.
No sound from bottom, and sometimes during the call no audio (I can't ear evrything and the other don't ear me).
Now I'm tring the mobile phone in safety mode.
And I've seen (for the edge version) that next android could fix the problem.
Someone have any update?
Have you tried the safety mode?
Im pretty sure its caused by Facebook messenger and Skype
From what I can tell, this seems to happen when you are playing any kind of audio, such as a video or game, and then receive a notification. You then go to the notification to respond to it and go back to your app that was playing the audio and the issue appears. It seems to be an issue, at least with me, whenever notification is received and subsequently answered.

Semi-Perm fix (no patch) for random sound change from clear to muffled/bass and back.

Thanks to @cstark27 for the Magisk Mod, and @S8rooted&tooted for troubleshooting a non-patch fix.
So there's an issue with our phones that makes the sound either sound clear, muffled (some call it bass heavy), and then it changes back and forth seemingly randomly. There are three things you can try without using the Magisk Mod, and all three seem to work with one that I personally found to work the best.
1. If you're playing YouTube videos you can pause/play the video. This seems to change the sound either way depending on how it sounds before pausing.
2. Raise volume to 100%, and then back down to where you want it. This seems to be consistent to have the sound be clear without the muffled bass sound.
3. (This is the best for me) Turn off any equalizers any apps have, and only have Google Play Music's equalizer on, and set to Normal without Bass boost or Surround sound on (as in the screenshot). There is a chance something starts the randomness again, and I found the best solution is to reboot, and then it will be good again for a good while (hence the title "Semi-Perm").
I've been using number 3 testing it in all apps I can think of that has sound/music from games to YouTube to simple apps that just make a click (even clicks can be different when the sound changes overall). I have yet to hear any sound change to muffled/bass, and even the top and bottom speakers seem even again. Pausing/playing, raising sound to 100% then back down, the sound is consistently clear.
Here's two links to the other thread with the Magisk Mod, so you can try either of these three methods, or try the Magisk Mod. Hopefully Google will sort it out when they release next months update/fixes.

PS - Another great step to take is to submit feedback through your phone if you have this issue. I've done it myself, so if Google keeps getting feedback, hopefully they will take quicker action.
I think I found the main trigger. It may be known already, but I just put the pieces together. Since if the sound gets muffled, and turning the volume to 100% then back down via the physical volume buttons, and the sound gets clear again, I decided to test how long the volume stays clear after a reboot since a reboot always seemed to produce clear sounds every time. It seems to be steady clear through all apps, videos, and sounds as long as I don't touch the physical volume buttons. The moment I change the volume via the physical buttons my sound starts acting up. Say I'm in an app, and I want to change the media volume. Well if I use the physical buttons of course the volume changes, but like I said the sound suddenly becomes unstable, and I notice the change from clear to muffled soon after, but if I use the volume sliders through the settings section I never have an issue. I did it a couple of times, and it's been very consistent, so now I just use a shortcut on my homescreen to adjust the volumes, and never touch the physical keys. For those having this issue please report back if you try these methods, so hopefully Google can patch it sooner rather than later.
https://support.google.com/pixelphone/thread/3551881
Found another trigger. All was fine for over a day without touching the physical volume buttons, and then I received a call. Took the call (didn't touch volume), and once the call was complete the next app I opened had he muffled sound. Same app I used tens of times since last rebooting. Rebooted again, and all is good again.
So far: Physical volume buttons, and voice calls are two triggers.

I've been keeping my eye on this thread, and came across a poster who said they "fixed" the issue by uninstalling the Phone app updates, and then reinstalling it. I've tried so many things that I almost gave up, but for three days now I haven't had the issue even after several calls. I haven't rebooted yet, so I don't know if it will stay "fixed" (I'm using quotes since I don't really know if it truly is fixed for good). The funny thing is I went to say thank you to the poster, but their post somehow is now gone. I don't know if they removed it, or a mod did, but the "fix" seems to work.

Well this worked for several day, but I was watching YouTube, and had a phone call come in, and the issue came back. Retrying the "fix" didn't seem to work again. I deleted updates from Phone and YouTube, but I still get the issue. The only reliable temp fix is to reboot, and it seems good until a call comes in. Luckily I don't have that many calls, so sometimes I can go a day or so with good sound all around.
On a positive note I tweeted at Made by Google about this, and they replied saying that's not what they want users to have, and to DM them, so hopefully it will lead to a real fix by Google.
I think the random sound change isnt a bug, its automatic presets based on what type of sound it is, like sound for phone, sound notifications, different types of music etc etc.

Right, but there is a bug because the phone will apply the Phone app sound/bass to YouTube, but if you pause/play it, or turn the volume up to 100%, and then back down, the bass goes away. I agree with having presets, but they shouldn't mix/match when they feel like.
Since Google doesn't seem to care about this phone, or this issue, or their customers who bought it, as they haven't even bothered to acknowledge that it is happening I've trying all kinds of things, and keeping track of when it happens most. The latest "fix" that seems to be consistent is keep the in-call volume at 100%. Usually I keep it one notch down, but I was on a call two days ago, and had to turn up the sound to 100%. I forgot to turn it back down after the call, but ever since I haven't had the issue where the sound randomly changes from clear to muffled/bass. I've had sever calls since, and all is still good. I know when none of the volume controls are at 100%, and you get the issue, you can "fix" it by turning the regular volume to 100%, and then back down. So my theory is since the call volume is always at 100%, it is keeping the sound switching at bay.
I still can't believe after more than six months Google treats their customers so badly after paying $1000 (I did since I pre-ordered it). "Here buy our over priced phone now that will soon be half the cost, and then don't expect fixes for issues." Thanks Google.

I see what you mean, kind of gets tangled up in itself as it doesnt switch fast enough between the presets, when i get notification after notification really fast the phone the phone gets confused.
