+1 I've been in forums for a few years now....this is on the brink of chaos. Would a little organization kill us, really?
I can navigate the hell out of threads, but this is getting difficult for me even. Three threads talking about the same exact thing when there is already a thread specifically for that issue....eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeesh (my brain hurts)

I'm sure you guys were newbies ones which means you can't just post in the development section. So ease up its not the end of the world.

Yea Black Ice is not a theme, what I mean is the use of wallpapers, icons the notification bar and lock screens are great don't you call that the theme. Hello common sense.

sure call it what you want. The themes mr apoxalypse black knight ported from the vibrant

Quick Steps For N00bs like me (ext4 and black ice)
I had to mess with my phone to get the settings right but I popped the android cherry with this Rom. I'll save the rest of you the trouble of going through the steps I did.
If you tried ext4 and reflashed with another rom, your cache will not mount until you use the rfs formatter zip and reattempt.
Files Needed:
Odin 1.7 +
BlackIce_KD1Base.zip (Stable Release from dev forum thread)
ext4converter (from dev forum thread)
rfs_formatter (in case you mess up from same thread as ext4)
update.zip (from final cwm thread in dev forum)
Assuming you are not on ext4:
1) Download stock kd1 and flash onto phone using odin.
Make sure partition is not checked. Click the pda button in odin and direct it towards the PDA_KD1.tar.md5file. Make sure that your phone is in download mode, odin will let you know its ready when one of the ports on the screen lights up yellow. If you cannot get to download mode through the buttons, take out the battery, plug in the usb, hold down the volume up and down key + power, and then pop the battery in while holding those keys until you get into download mode.
When you succeed installing the rom through odin, you will boot up into the samsung recovery menu. Just choose reboot and then place all the files listed above in the root of the sdcard through the stock rom os. This is because if you use the rfs formatter, it will wipe all data from your sdcard. If you got stuck at the samsung 4g screen after ext4, you have to start the process over by using the rfs formatter.
2) After installing all files in the root of the sdcard, navigate to quickboot and choose recovery. The phone will boot into the samsung recovery mode with blue text. Choose Reinstall packages from samsung recovery menu to enter cwm (it will be in blue text). Make sure you have the update.zip file from the final cwm version in the development section or this will not load.
3)Changing the mounts the first time.
go into the mounts menu and alter it to read like this:
unmount cache
unmount data
mount sdcard
unmount system
4)Goto the option install a zip from sdcard and find the ext4converter. Choose this zip file and let it do its work.
******************WARNING****************
After ext4converter seems finished, do not immediately choose the BlackIce zip to flash. Navigate back to the mount menu and set the settings so it reads:
unmount cache
mount data
mount sdcard
unmount system
5)Goto the option to install a zip again and choose the BlackIce Zip file.
Wait until it completes successfully and you should be back in the cwm menu
6) Choose reboot, and if you did it successfully, you will see the team whiskey boot up animation. Congratulations, you are winning, but not as awesome as Charlie Sheen.
If not, you will be stuck at the samsung galaxy 4g screen for a couple minutes. This means start back at step 1.
When you manage to get the stock rom loaded, you have to use quickboot and go into recovery to use the rfs formatter zip. This will wipe your sd card, so as soon as it finishes running, boot up the stock android, place all those files back onto the root of the sd card and begin from step 2 again.
I know this tutorial is a little longwinded, but I feel that its more helpful this way. Just bits and pieces by the rest of you guys wasted me a lot of man hours.
Edit For New Stable Release:
If you followed my instructions, and are on the first stable black ice and ext4, this is how you update to stable 2 and Bali v 3.0 sgs4g
Download blackice_voodoo.zip or stable release 2 from dev section
Download bali v3.0 kernel sgs4g from the dev section
Place these files on the root of the sdrom
Boot into cwm
Set the mount points to read:
unmount
mount
mount
unmount
and then choose install zip packages and choose the blackice_voodoo.zip
let it install and then goto advanced in the cwm menu and choose recovery reboot
you should see the red voodoo menu and then go ahead and check the voodoo options so that all options are enabled except for the debugging features on the bottom.
Go ahead and go back and choose install zip in the voodoo recovery and choose the bali v3.0 kernel on the root sd
it will say kernel successfully installed and then you will go to the samsung galaxy 4g screen for about 4 minutes.
******Warning*********
You will hear a voice 'Linda' even with headphones plugged in and the phone on vibrate only. It will count down from 3 minutes. You have been warned. I am embarassed to show my face in the office now. The robotic voice yelling a countdown and all the other people in the cubicles are looking at me funny. FML.
Anyways enjoy.

lol great instructions again btw. i've wasted more time fiddling with mounts combos and permissions than with the actual rom today lol

Would a little kindness kill you, ak4life23?
All we want to do is keep the forums organized.
No, it isn't a big deal that you made one mistake. But I think we'd all appreciate next time that you didn't do this.
Second, this isn't a theme, it's a ROM. The ROM includes a theme Krylon ported from another source. So, common sense would be that you called the actual theme the CORRECT name, "Mr. Apoc Black Knight Theme", and not "Black Ice".
And no matter what you modify, what **most** people call a theme is a ZIP you can flash that changes the wallpapers, colors, notification bars, or lock screens.
Not to be overly critical or rude, but just saying as a fellow user.
Thank you :]

when did they change that u couldnt post on the dev forums as a new user cause umm my firsts posts were on those same forums intrusting but ya its nice what u posted but tbh for sake of the forums the questions should have been directed to the thread that already contains the rom

For all the bugs people reported, I thank you. This release should fix a bunch of those bugs!
UPDATE:If you are having problems follow the new instructions on how to install bellow.
Changelog:
MAJOR Bug fixes.
Screen turns off.
Keyboard works.
Wifi may work(untested)
Accelerometer works.
Missing anything...?
Thanks:
Thank you Brendan for testing this release for me while my phone takes a little "nap" lol.
Features:
Deodexed
Bloatware removed
Scripts
Build.prop mods
Not sure if everyone know's this, but all my releases come with a widget that looks just like the HTC Clock called Fancy Widgets.
Please report bugs to me as you find them. Best way to contact me is email me at [email protected] or my GTalk Matt4542.
How to install:Important!
You will need to download Koush's bootstrap application and bootstrap your recovery. Then you can boot into recovery via the same app or you can install via ROM Manager(by rebooting into recovery, not via install rom from sdcard). Once you boot into recovery do a FULL nandroid backup and then you go to mounts and storage and mount /system manually to avoid more issues. Install zip from sdcard and toggle signature verification to disable. Now you can install the zip from the sdcard. Once this is done, reboot.
Now after reading all that here is your download!

Please READ each direction CAREFULLY and BEFORE executing each step. I can not stress how many mistakes are made because someone did not READ the directions carefully. So... yeah, once again, READ THE DIRECTIONS CAREFULLY!
How to Apply EpicUnleashed 1.1
Credits: The ROM was created by Matt4542. Tutorial was written by me with some simple directions from Matt. You'll need to be rooted in order to run the Droid 2 Bootstrapper.
The fine print: Matt4542 and/or I (DarkOnion) can not be held responsible if you mess up. If you mess up, you mess up. That's why I wrote the .sbf recovery tutorial. Matt has also written one. More simple, but requires Linux.
Here we go.
1. Download Koush Bootstrap here.
http://koush.tandtgaming.com//motorola/droid2/Droid2Bootstrap.apk
2. Download Epic Unleashed 1.1!
http://www.epic.grrmode.com/Epic-Unleashed11Deodexed.zip
3. Move both files to the base of the SD Card. Best way to do this is to plug your phone into your computer and move it like that. Make sure you phone is in USB mass storage mode. To change it, pull down the notification blind, choose USB connection, and choose USB Mass storage. Now copy and paste the two files to the new removable drive that showed up in your My Computer. The Epic-Unleashed11Deodexed.zip needs to be at the base of the SD card, and not in any folders. After moving all the files over to the phone, change the connection type back to Charge Only. Notfication blind -> USB Connection -> Charge only.
4. Install Koush Droid 2 Bootstrapper. Using an app installer, Astro File Manager, or equivalent, navigate to your SD card. The folder in Astro File Manager will be called sdcard. Choose Droid2Bootstrap.apk and install it. Follow the directions.
5. Now that it is installed, open Droid 2 Bootstrapper located in your applications section menu. It'll probably ask you for Super User access, say yes.
6. Press Bootstrap Recovery. It'll probably ask you for Super User access, say yes.
7. Next, we want to back your system file up by making a system image. In the Droid2 Bootstrapper, which you are already in, choose Reboot Recovery. Your phone should restart and load up into the bootloader. You should see some green text with various options, and a little lower than the middle of the screen, it says ClockworkMod Recovery.
Notes for navigating through the system. You need to use the keyboard to navigate. "Enter" will select. "Del" will cancel/go back. and the arrows are movement.
8. Using your slide out keyboard, scroll down to backup and restore and press the enter key. It should take you to another window. Choose Backup. Let it runs it's course. After it is all said and done. Reboot your phone by choosing reboot system now. (I don't think the rebooting is necessary, but I am just going to do it be safe.)
9. After you are done rebooting, if you did this, go back to the Droid 2 Bootstrapper, and choose Reboot Recovery. It'll reboot, and you'll eventually be back at the screen with the green text.
10. Using your keyboard buttons, choose mount and storage. And then choose mount /system. After that, press del to go back to the main menu.
11. Using your keyboard buttons, choose install zip from sdcard.
12. You need to make sure signature verification is off. Choose toggle signature verification and make sure it is off. At the bottom, under ClockworkMod Recovery, it'll say whether or not signature verification is enabled or disabled. You want it to say that it is disabled.
13. Then choose install zip from sdcard. Choose Epic-Unleashed11Deodexed.zip. It'll ask to confirm. Scroll down to Yes, and press enter. You'll see some commands going and eventually say it is complete.
14. Now navigate back to the main menu by pressing "Del" on the keyboard. And restart your phone by choosing reboot system now. It'll reboot and that's it! You've added EpicUnleashed 1.1.
Note: Your first boot will take a little while, up to 10 minutes. PLEASE BE PATIENT. You know that you corrected updated if your start-up animation is different.
If you need to undo this thing, boot back up into bootloader using Droid 2 Bootstrapper -> Reboot Recovery -> Back Up and Restore (after the reboot) -> Restore.

Maybe you can put the launcher2.apk for 2.2 as the main homescreen. I downloaded it from the droid incredible forum on my phone and everything is working alot snappier on my end. Still using stock just looking and waiting until everything is figured on this rom.

As a test for now just try to install your recovery from ROM Manager and boot into recovery that way. It is untested but it is worth a shot.

Actually all of the bugs have been ironed out. It is a problem with the recovery. It may affect you, may not. I would put the stock Froyo launcher but I am not going to risk screwing with blur and causing more problems now. I will do it in a later release.
ya i installed it, but i did it from my downloads folder, it took like 3 seconds and nothing is new lol, i will have to try from the root i guess.

Yes and no. It'll is suppose to help clean up some of the junk that is on the phone. Have you rooted yet, because if you haven't... you need to do that before you flash a fixed version.

Yup. It does work. Thank you to you sir, and thank you to Matt for walking me through the updating process. I have updated the tutorial to reflect the changes.

[Guide] *NOOB's* guide to flashing FROYO <> With the GB release

I am putting this up for new users of the Samsung Galaxy S 4g that are having issues with flashing, well, pretty much any rom right now.
1) The main issue right now is our recovery and rom manager not working together....NOT THE ROM's!
2) Here is a walk through for problem free flashing (I have officially flashed every rom posted here right now and have no issues whatsoever)
So here we go:
1) I'll start this assuming you have already rooted.
2) Download the update.zip and recovery from HERE
3) Place files on the root of your sdcard (not in any file) DO NOT UNZIP THE UPDATE.ZIP!!!
4) You must have a file system explorer with root permissions (IE...Root Explorer or equivalent)
5) Once in Root Explorer, your system MUST BE MOUNTED AS R/W, navigate to your sdcard, find the recovery file you downloaded and long press....select "copy"
6) Hit the back button until you return to the file marked "/" and make sure it is still mounted r/w, then navigate to system, then bin. Once you are in bin (this is important) hit "paste" on the bottom of your screen. It will ask if you want to overwrite the existing recovery. Select yes. DO NOT REPLACE IT, ONLY OVERWRITE IT!!!
7) Keep hitting the back button on your phone until you exit out of root explorer.
8) Power off your phone, then, after fully shut down, holding volume up AND down plus power (yes, hold all 3 of them) you will enter a blue stock recovery screen. Scroll down 1 option to "reinstall packages", press power........you should now be in the orange Clockwork Mod recovery.
9) Scroll down to "backup and restore" and hit power, then go to "Backup" and hit power. Let it do it's thing. This will create a backup on your sdcard in a file called "clockwork". Keep this so you can restore in case something goes wrong (or like me, like to change things up all the time).
10) Now, again, I will assume that you have the rom of your choice on the root of your sdcard. This is where things get screwy....so pay attention to the OP's instructions for mounts. Scroll to "mounts and storage" and hit power.
11) The first 4 things you will see are : /cache, /data, /sdcard, and /system. This is where you need to pay close attention to what you are doing.
A) For KD1 and Bionix Frost your mounts must appear like this:
/cache : unmount
/data : mount
/sdcard : mount
/system : unmount
B) For Trigger your mounts must appear like this:
/cache : unmount
/data : unmount
/sdcard : mount
/system : unmount
If they are not in this order, change them so they are, or it will flash but will not boot. YOU WILL BE IN A SOFT BRICK STATE THAT REQUIRES ODIN TO FIX!!!!
12) Install RomManager if you wish, but DO NOT, I REPEAT DO NOT FLASH CLOCKWORKMOD RECOVERY FROM THE LIST, this will cause your phone to get stuck at wiping a file called /.android_ secure in recovery.....so once again, HELLO ODIN! Also DO NOT REBOOT RECOVERY from rom manager, this will also cause /.android_secure to not wipe.....so once again, HELLO ODIN!
Last but not least, follow instructions on the OP to the "T" and you will be fine, unless you enjoy odin that much.....personally, I hate it.
If anything here is wrong or not working for you, please let me know so I can fix/update this. Please double/triple check everything that you did and make sure it is correct before *****ing "It's still not working".......because it does work. I have flashed and flashed and flashed with only 1 soft brick, and that was my fault.....not these instructions fault.
To see if I can make this make a little more sense now, here we go: The reason for changing mounts is that, by default, /system is not mounted. To be able to flash and boot successfully, it has to be. When you are looking at them, it will say "mount", this means that it is NOT mounted. If it says "unmount", then it means it IS mounted, confused yet? Just remember it like this: It is the opposite of what it says...so make sure that system says "unmount", which actually means it's mounted. This step is absolutely CRUCIAL.
Enjoy the hell out of your bad ass Samsung Galaxy S 4g, because I am
This should definitely make the sgs4g bible. Its a great tutorial on getting through the flashing issues people are having. Thank you this is ( . ) ( . )

Great job! I just came from the HD2 and was wondering if any of these roms helps the ****ty battery life?
They are all better than stock for sure. Also if you use the battery recalibration trick.....its much better.

yes im a noob and yes i approve of these directions lol ya followed to the letter got clock work installed and bali installed ty
I got a question. I have this problem since I screwed up flashing the first Trigger, and then, with a brain fart, odining with the Vibrant .pit file. I got it fixed but now it will not let me change the /cache mount. I am running Trigger .4 with no problems but just curious why I can't change that mount. When I go into root explorer the only file in there is "lost&found"????
Let me do some research on that one, lol.

Nevermind, figured it out.

[Q] Any chance I could get a hand "modding" my phone.

I've been on this site a little over than an hour and a member for about 10 minutes now and i'm trying to find ways to better my devices performance, I am a little familiar with cyanogen mod and know that is is not yet available for the SGS4G and i know better than asking when it will be released. How ever I did see something called 'bionix Black Ice ROM' people i here seemed to be stoked about that. Now what exactly is that? will it help my phones performance? will it get rid of all the bloatware? next if it does help with all of that could somebody step by step walk me through the process or make a youtube vdeo showing how to install black ice step by step? i'm obviously new to all this and really don't wanna brick my phone.
thanks, GD
hi! welcome to the forums, btw! this is the best place to find out stuff about your phone. i was in your place about a month ago, so i know exactly how confused you are.
you should read this for everything referencing your phone.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1117554
to answer your questions: yes. lol. no more bloat, everything will be much faster and basically you will have the phone of your dreams.
i am no expert, but i would root the phone using superoneclickroot. then download root explorer. get krylon's final cwm. download the rom (black ice or frost or w/e you prefer), download bali 3.1, the ext4 converter, and maybe a new modem (optional). flash those following the very well written guides by the devs and you should be ok.
everyone here is pretty awesome and we're all willing to help (even me...who barely knows anything).
Ok, i've already Rooted my phone. I guess now i need to download said programs. any links on these well written descriptive how to? because all the ones i saw confused the hell out of me and id like to believe i'm not completely retarded. Thank you for the welcome BTW.
i would start with krylon final cwm. his directions are pretty straightforward. i used root explorer to move the file where it needed to be.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1099374
i am assuming you downloaded the rom already from the CWM rom section in the bible. its up to you. im biased towards bionix frost, but black ice is just as amazing.
i would also dl the ext converter and bali 3.1 kernel as well. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1123039) (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1080871). place all of the zip files you download into the root of your sd card....which means that if you connect your phone to the computer and open it using windows explorer, it is that first window, which lists all of the folders. dont put these files in folders or anything.
once that is done, i restarted my phone in recovery shutting down fully and pressing the power+volume up+volume down. once there, i went to reinstall packages to get into cwm.
then when this loads, i wiped the system/factory reset and wiped the cache. then i went to mounts and storage and mounted my system. (the final mounting output should be: unmount, mount, mount, unmount). i then scrolled to "go back"
i choose install zip file from sd card. choose zip file, which should be the second option if my memory serves me right. scroll of ext converter and install that one. then when that is done, go back to install file from sd card, choose black ice or frost (i LOVE frost) and install that one. then when that is done, i flash my bali 3.1 uv kernel. when that is flashed, i click go back and choose reboot system. once that is done, you will see the galaxy s screen for like 5 min or so followed by the team whiskey logo. once you see this, it will take another minute or so to load up. once you see that the rom loads up...LET THE PHONE SIT FOR 10 minutes. i know it seems long, but just let it sit.
after 10 min or so, i would go into your about phone options and check and see that you have bali3.1 and that the rom is correct.
do these tweaks as well

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1141550
you can flash a modem too (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1117331) using the same process as flashing any other zip file.
remember, the first option in choosing a zip file is update.zip from krylons final cwm. do not flash this after the rom/ext/whatever. im not sure if this has been addressed (im still a noob), but everytime i did that, i bricked my phone. lol. so just to answer your question before you wonder...cause i always wondered whether i should flash that or not. lol.
hope this helps. feel free to press the thank button.

Hi, i am very new and a noob at this site and rooting in general. Hear me out. Im stuck on getting the recovery on the phone. ADB push? Root explorer? I cannot find /system/bin.. PLz walk me tru.
If you rooted your phone, download root explorer from the market. then follow the guides I listed in the post. If you read through the threads, everything has already been asked.
Root explorer is a file manager that allows you to see everything. there are other explorers, like super manager, but I like root explorer. To push a file, download it to your computer, move it to your sd card, open root explorer, find the file, long press, click move, and then navigate to the destination folder and paste.
To get into recovery to flash roms, shut the phone off, then press power and the two volume buttons at the same time. You'll get to a screen with blue text. Click reinstall packages and you'll see krylon's cwm. Follow my previous post prior to going into download mode though.

Retire so soon eh ...maybe, some months after you retire then we'll have "Erikmm come back silently and more dangerous with Jellybean debut" lol ...you're rock anw man
Here's a question: does JoyOS's launcher support landscape? I ask it because MIUI's doesn't. I know I can install other launchers, that's not the point.
Also, if it does support landscape, does it have screen rotation animations, like CM7 has? Not that it's critical, but looks great.
What about themes by the way? Are there any? Or is it just iPhone-style and that's it?
Thank you in advance.
Blue recovery screen
flashed rom and now I'm stuck at rebooting to blue recovery screen. Tried to get to download mode to try the gremlin remover but goes back to blue. I flashed another rom but it still boots to blue. Any help? Thanks in advance.
---------- Post added at 08:18 AM ---------- Previous post was at 08:08 AM ----------
Finally got it into download mode, will try to redownload the rom and try again
---------- Post added at 08:44 AM ---------- Previous post was at 08:18 AM ----------
Same result blue screen and wont reboot. Not sure what is wrong
Brick0044....the only way I found to recover from that was the [odin+cwm] gb ext4 starter pack in the dev section by FBis251
That's if you decide you don't want to stick with that rom ....otherwise just reflash a few times and you will get it
@g4ry12: the launcher itself does not support landscape mode but in other apps or windows do and yeah, since Erikmm said it based on CM7.2 (completely then it has all CM7 features like themechooser, animations...there's a section for CM7 settings in Joyos settings) and by mention themes, it has themechooser, exactly from CM7 but the theme just affect the status bar, buttons,...blah blah, but not the icons and you can't change the icons except you know how to modify the launcher app...that's all
@BRICK0044: Just read the OP, the OP for CM7 (or the same as Miui-revenge) said that you can flash easily through these steps:
erikmm said:
1 .Download the following:
efs-backup link : efs-backup
efs-restore link : efs-restore
JoyOS rom*check md5 posted below download link*
2. Place those three files in root of your sd card
3. Backup data with Titanium Backup or whatever app you use (optional)
4. Reboot to recovery
5. Do a Nandroid Backup
6. Flash EFS-Backup
7. Backup sd card to your computer ( you can do this by going to mounts and storage
and mount USB storage, this way you wont leave recovery and the efs backup is in there too)
8. Flash JoyOS port (it will start then reboot itself into blue cwm)
9. Go to Mounts and Storage
10. Format System
11. Mount System
12. Go back to main menu
13. Wipe data/factory reset
14. Go into Install zip from sdcard
15. Choose zip from sdcard
16. Flash efs-restore
17. Flash JoyOS port
18. Reboot.
19. Let it sit for 10 mins or so.
20. Enjoy.

Remember to flash the efs-backup bfore you so anything else and first things after you wipe things, format system, mount system in the BLUE recovery is flash the efs-restore and follow those steps.
Anyway, those are things you should do after you solve your problem...And as you describe, seems like you were still on <3e> recorvery, you must do GR (got into download mode to do GR), if after GR, it's still blue and error, I think you can choose boot into system by press the power button once on that highlight option in the blue recovery and then, everything should be ok (as I experienced this before) and after you got into the stock rom, you can go to play store, download SGS kernel flasher and flash one of these Basic with a Twist SGS4G KJ6 Kernel and then follow those instruction below to flash JoyOS...
If that's not your case, I recommend you to do One-click Heimdall and after you got to the rom, flash a new kernel via CWM or SGS kernel flasher in playstore...
And even if you were not on <3e> recovery but BLUE 5.5...recovery, then you just need to follow Erikmm guidance to flash this
And Finnally, IT IS NOT RECOMMEND TO ODIN (do GR) OR HEIMDALL VIA FRONT USB PORTS ON YOUR PC, YOU SHOULD DO THAT WITH BACK PORTS (ON YOUR PC CASE)
Wow take the loooooooooong way lol
This is just another miui style rom...flashing away from this doesn't have to be long and tedious

Erik, I figured out why some of your users are getting an error 7 when they flash. They don't have an efs backup in their sdcards so when they try to flash the rom, updater.sh will exit with status 7. Read the logic here:
https://github.com/teamacid/android_device_samsung_galaxys4gmtd/blob/gingerbread/updater.sh#L144
If they had been flashing from a BML rom then the efs would've gotten properly backed up.
Also reflashing the rom right away will work because the script will only run all the way once if it finds cyanogenmod.cfg on the sdcard:
https://github.com/teamacid/android_device_samsung_galaxys4gmtd/blob/gingerbread/updater.sh#L118
It's not necessarily a good thing that people can reflash even though the efs backup didn't get restored.

That is seriously the most retarded way to find out. You gonna flash every ROM just to see if it has a certain feature? If you don't know, don't answer.

Good to know, thank you, I did not realize that based on CM7 meant all CM7 features, I thought it was just kernel, MTD, basic things like that. And thanks for the heads-up about no themed icons and no landscape mode for the launcher.

{REF}New User Guide to Flashing CM7 via ClockWorkMod

Well, It seems we are having a rash of new users obtaining used and refurbed G2x(s). A lot of these guys are jumping into rooting and flashing and as the XDA G2x community shrinks, the remaining "senior G2x members" are trying to help as much as possible. I have decided to write up this tips and install help guide so the new users have updated information. You may ask how I may be qualified to write this guide? I can say I've been on XDA shorter than the time I've owned and modded this phone. I think I've had this phone 15 months now. These are the procedures I follow to a T every time and always produce a solid and stable setup. I have flashed everything for this phone, literally, and find CM7 is the only stable choice for custom ROMs.
POST 1: INSTALLING CM7 via ClockWorkMod
POST 2: <reserved>(CM7 Setup Tips)
POST 3: <reserved>
I am writing this guide assuming a few things:
1. You are already running ClockWorkMod Recovery that was installed properly via NVFlash, NOT ROM MANAGER. If you used ROM Manager to install CWM, STOP, and follow this guide to properly flash CWM using NVFlash.
[RECOVERY][APP] 4-28 One-Click NvFlasher ClockWorkMod Touch 5.8.1.3/5.0.2.0/4.0.1.5
2. You want stability and have decided to flash CM7. This guide will always support the night-lies, although I am sure the stable CM7 release can be used in place, I have ran into troubleshooting issues that were resolved by moving them over to the updated source... night-lies! (or monthlies now? lol)
3. You will be flashing a custom kernel, meaning you will not be using the stock CM7 kernel, which sucks anyways. I will only offer support in this thread for users who have flashed Faux 054 or ANY Mazout360 (v0130 and up, OC variants only) kernel.
4. You are on the March 11, 2012 BASEBAND (LG Stock Android 2.3.4)
5. You have basic knowledge of file extensions (.zip,.apk,etc.), and have basic knowledge of how to manipulate and navigate files and file directories.
6. That you have an External MicroSD card and a MicroSD card reader for your PC.
7. That you have backed up any personal data from the phone as you will LOSE EVERYTHING on the phone.
8. Phone is fully charged and/or plugged in.
9. You are fully aware that using any ROM other than LG Stock 2.3.4, or a rooted LG stock 2.3.4 variant on the March 11, 2012 baseband WILL BREAK BLUETOOTH CALL AUDIO, MEDIA AUDIO (music, games, movies etc) WORKS 100%
That said, now for the fun stuff.
You will need the following files:
The latest CM7 release for our P999 from Cyanogenmod The latest release as of this guide: 3-1-2013
Gapps Pack (Required for Playstore etc..)
Kernel (if not using CM7 stock kernel, find in link in my signature or over in the development section.
The Fix for the March 11 2012 baseband, newbaseband.zip
So now you should have 4 files, ROM, kernel, Gapps, and newbaseband. And they should all be in .zip format. You will need to place these on the ROOT DIRECTORY of your MicroSD card.
And now we flash your new setup!
1. With your phone off, boot into CWM (I use CWM 5.0.2.0) by pressing and holding the Power & Vol - buttons until you see the second LG logo with the blue streak and release. Welcome to CWM.
2. You need to wipe the phones previous data. To do this use the Vol +/- keys to scroll up and down, and tap the power key to select options and than select:
-wipe data/factory reset
-wipe cache partition
-select advanced-->wipe dalvik cache
-GO BACK to CWM Main Menu
-select mounts and storage
-format /system
-GO BACK to CWM Main Menu
That's it for wiping.
3. Let's flash this so we can play with our new shiny toy.
-select install zip from sdcard
-choose zip from sdcard
-scroll and select your ROM from the file list
Now you will repeat this process and flash
-Custom Kernel
-newbaseband.zip
-Gapps Package
That's it! Go back to CWM Main if not already there and "reboot system now".
-First boot can take up to 10mins depending on kernel used.
-After the phone boots, LET IT SIT FOR 10MINS, DO NOT USE IT.
-Reboot
-Wait 5 mins and than proceed with inital phone setup.
-Reboot and wait 5 mins and than proceed with using the phone as you see fit.
I will be adding in some CM7 and kernel related setup tips tomorrow in post #2, as well as re-formatting post #1. It's 4:33am as of this writing, I need to go sleep!
