[Q] Possibility using TalkMobile sim in MIFI router? - Xoom Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I'd like to put my Talk Mobile sim card into a MIFI router. I phoned the operator, their stand is that to use the sim card as a wifi hotspot is against their policy.
I've paid for 5 GB of data allowance per month, I don't see why it matters if I use it on the Xoom or a laptop or an ipad.
Can somebody please share some info on how the operator differentiate data traffic between the Xoom and MIFI please?

I really don't think they can tell the difference. In the US there are laws against providers intercepting and building packets, and that would be the only way I think they could find out....
I guess they could tell what type of device is connecting to the network when the mifi authenticates...

I don't think they can tell. Even if they can, how can they stop you?

mobile wifi router (does it cost extra?)

Hi i have mobile wifi router installed on my phone (came with duttys rom) and i was wondering if using it my network could tell and charge me extra?
I have an unlimited data plan but i know I could pay an extra £10 and then my phone could be used as a mobile boradband device, does this mean that if i try to use the mobile wifi router program that my carrier would be able to tell and block it or charge me extra?
Also is there a way to share the phone connection with a pc without using wifi and without having to buy the networks extra mobile boradband package because I will almost never use it but its good to know i have the option if i go on holiday or whatever, maybe i want to prows the web in the garden soemthing like that
no wifi works even if you don't have a sim card in the phone
just like pda's with wifi and no phone
just like your laptop connecting with wifi to the router
just like your desktop connecting with wifi or cable to the router
no its not that, mobile wifi router converts your phone into a router so your laptop/whatever can connect to it and use its data connection to connect to the internet, I was just wondering if doing this the network can tell and then charge me extra as they usually charge for using your phone as an internet access point
the connection from the phone to the laptop or computer is free anything wifi
the cost to go onto internet will however depend on your satat rates, just to be sure id ask your operator
Hi thanks for trying to help, but thats not what I was asking. I know wifi connections are free what I was asking is if my operator will be able to tell the difference between my phone using its data connection and my laptop using my phones data connection.
The reason I ask is that I have unlimited data for my phone.
but
you can pay extra money to upgrade your account to allow your phone to be used as a mobile broadband dongle
but if they can't tell the difference between phone using its data and pc using its data then there is no need to pay the extra money.
is this the case or am i missing something
Depending on your operator, there could be a max of MB's. So it might be 500 MB/month, but also unlimited internet. With that, you are able to use it without any extra costs.
Is it possible to somewhat put up a wifi network on your phone via some program (WiFi Router is one I think) and connect to it and use it ON your phone?
aaah teething
as far as I know they should not be able to detect it
but I could be mistaken
If the usage is large 500MB/month, carrier might suspect unusual activity. teething is paid service with some carriers.
I have a G1 tethered on T-mobile USA. I have talked to customer service. They said they do not support tethering but that it is not illegal. Their solution is to allow a soft cap of 10gb of data service with their unlimited plan and once you reach the cap they throttle the internet speed down from 3g to 2g levels. Not to horrible. I play all my online games with my G1 connection, Counter Strike Source, Perfect World International, Flyff, and download quite a bit of music and usually only reach about 300mb a day which gives me a full month of service before i reach that cap. And at the start of the new month I get reset.
I´m in the same situation.
I´ve got an unlimited data plan, which covers phone/PDA use, but EXCLUDES using the device as a modem for a PC/Laptop (tethering).
I´ve tethered it ocasionally, and it worked.
My carrier didnt charge me extra, nor blocked. BUT i know the risk exists. I´ve tried to research.
What i read is that carrier COULD tell if you are tethering by traffic analysis (one way is looking the user agent of your web pages request, which identifies yor browser), but that this traffic analysys is not practical, and most carriers dont do it....by now.
So of you tether ocasionally, you are safe.....today, ....until carriers perceive there is a number significant enough to make profits,of people tethering under a data plan intented just for phone use, then they can start charging you.

ha nice, well im gonna give it a go anyway and see what happens, its just funny that they specifically advertise to upgrade your account to be able to do this as if they can somehow tell. I dunno what mobile boradband is like in the us but in the uk there advertising it all over the place as if its someting people really need instead of something that is ocasionally useful, apart from in your case its mad how much you do through your phone.

thanks for this, if the only thing they can do to check is by the web requests of your browser surely there is a way to pretend to be opera mobile for example which should receive the full web anyway. Anyway as you say I won;t be using it much if at all so if i do fancy it i think ill just take the risk and see what happens worse they can do is charge me a little extra and i may even be able to avoid that by pleeding ignorance

I don't quite understand this question, you could use the program i mentioned to make your phone into a wifi access point and use its data connection to the internet then anything you like could then connect to it e.g. another phone, psp, ps3 laptop .....
is that what you ment?

SIM clone / 4g sharing

I want to use a single internet 4g/3g account without having to carry a portable router (like sprint overdrive or clear's mobile router.. its another device 2 carry and battery that will drain).
There are several posts on the internet about how you can and can not clone a sim.
If for example you have a sim thats for a 3g/4g mobile broadband service with ATT or any similar carrier I'm assuming you can (at the risk of damaging the sim) continuously swap them when needed.
I'm guessing if you can manage to clone the sim, you can just use them interchangeably (though probably not simultaneously?)
Why not just use mobile hotspot/wireless tethering?

Probably because then you end up running down the battery on one device just so you can provide a data connection to the second device.
You end up running down two batteries instead of one.
The European networks have the right idea - the ability to have multiple SIMs registered under a single number.
You can then choose which SIM various services are directed to using the serial numbers.
It's just a shame that here in the UK and, from the sounds of it, also in the US, that none of the networks seem willing to offer this service.
@step666
In general you have the right idea.
If I start traveling again I just want to be ready for maximum mobility and having connectivity. That would mean having sim devices and ideally a laptop that takes a sim.
From your post it seems, at least in the US, for now it seems the best I can do is get an overdrive modem with a few extra batteries.
& yes the whole point is not having to drain power from another device... I currently tether and actually have 2 batteries for both my laptop and cellular but the connectivity has its flaws and the batteries for the phone drain very quick.

Would someone with an LTE mifi be willing to try this?

Take the SIM card out of the Thunderbolt and put it into the MIFI/Samsung Hotspot device, and see if you still get LTE connection from the MIFI/Samsung device? I would like to buy one of those things but only if I can get unlimited data with it.
Wont work. Lte =/= GSM. It uses dual authentication using your unique imei (device id). Also: it will recognize the device_type as an aircard.

mcmillian is correct as you can not use the $30 unlimited data in an aircard, Verizon would see the device ID and turn off your data... however to add a couple additional pennies on the topic...
you can use your LTE sim card in ANY LTE device. I've tried it with other Thunderbolt (hmm, my phone replacement, ugh) and it worked flawlessly. I really do miss that about GSM carriers as i would take the card out of my nice phone, and put it in a crappy prepaid phone when i went to the beach, or Six Flags. If it fell out or got lost.... oh well!

Hmm if it worked in other thunderbolts I think it's definitely worth a shot in the aircard. I'm less concerned about Verizon seeing it and shutting it down at some later point... I know how big companies work and it would likely go unchecked for years before they decide to care enough.
I did this exact thing and it billed me for $1562 in mb usage on this pay months bill. You should definitely try it

It doesn't go unchecked for years, it registers the MiFi to that line the second you put the SIM in and puts a compatible data feature on the line automatically. So you won't magically get unlimited data they will just convert the plan automatically.
For what its worth, I currently work at VZW and here is what our intranet says regarding moving a 4G LTE sim from a phone to a modem and vice versa.
4G SIM Change from USB to Smartphone
---------------------------------------
Customers with existing USBs who take the SIM out of the USB and place it into a 4G Smartphone will be able to place voice calls and will be charged the $0.25 per minute rate.
A change will be going into place by 03/22/2011 that will place a voice block on all new USB consumer and enterprise customers and all embedded base enterprise customers.
In addition, a change will be going in place on 04/17/2011 which will allow us to go back and put the block on the existing customer base.
Once the block is in place, users will not be able to place voice calls when they swap the SIMs unless they switch to an applicable voice/data plan.
4G SIM Change from Smartphone to USB
---------------------------------------
Customers who purchase a SIM with a 4G Smartphone and have voice and data, will be able to remove the SIM and place it in a 4G USB.
Data usage on the USB would continue to be billed according the data plan on the Smartphone (including unlimited).
Customers would continue to pay for voice as per the terms of their agreement.

Nice, thanks for the info. I will definitely pick up a mifi then. Have you any idea which one is better? The verizon branded LTE mifi or the Samsung LTE Mobile Hotspot? I'm guessing the Samsung but just wanted to make sure there are no surprises with it.

I can't tell if you're serious or not...
PEOPLE... I've worked for a huge Verizon retailer for five years. On my personal plan I have a Thunderbolt and I took my sim out and put it in a Samsung LTE Mifi. I got billed for $1,562 in MB overage and not only did it not automatically change my calling plan to a broadband data plan, but it kept my $29.99 unlimited days feature on there and still billed me $1.99/mb. $1,562 in data charges. This is your warning, don't try it. They won't credit it for me either.

Am I missing something here? why piss money away on a mifi when you can root your phone and use wifi tether?

Nice try, Verizon guy.
Edit: On the off chance that this is real and you're not just seeking attention, seriously do not pay that bill. A phone company cannot sign you up for a plan (contract) of their choosing and bill you outrageous sums. The only contract you signed was for unlimited data. Unless they have your signature on a document saying that you agreed to pay $1.99/mb for something, then you do not have to pay it. If they are accusing you of something illegal, which would be ridiculous, then only a court can make a judgement against you.

Well, it's less expensive than a phone, and consumes less battery power for starters. Not advising anyone to do this... I have my reasons, just want to know if it will work.

Hey, so are you a fellow VZW employee?
I'm not a "Verizon guy," I work for a retailer, not corporate Verizon. I was just offering a warning of what happened on the 10th when I received my bill. And they won't credit me because I contract with them as an indirect agent and as I activated it on my own acct I should have "known better." Do what you want, I was just trying to offer some advice to the OP.

I have a Thunderbolt and a Pantech USB modem. I took the SIM from my phone, put it in the USB stick, and it worked no problems....
I did this a couple months ago just cause I was wondering if it worked. I didn't leave my phone's Sim in the USB for a long time, just surfed the internet that evening long enough to see that it worked in case I wanted to use the unlimited data in the USB stick to download a movie or something and not use my 5G limit of the broadband plan.
I did not see any additional charges on my bill, but like I said, I only had it in there for one evening.

I have the original CR-48 chromebook and it was tied to Verizon. If yours supports GSM, the SIM might work, though T-Mobile will probably sniff the traffic and assume you are tethering which might lead to the dreaded upgrade screen on your browser.

[Q] simple mobile hotspot

I've searched up and down and all around simple mobile's website for the answer to the question:
Does simple mobile allow you to use a android phone with a simple mobile sim card as a HotSpot for other computer(s)?
Is it legal?
thanks!
one extra question:
Is it ok to connect a galaxy s 4g with simple mobile to a VPN service (that is normally only for android) and then get a wifi connection to a computer so the computer can use the vpn as well?
I hope its legal I do it everyday
Sent from my SGH-T959V using xda app-developers app
How could be illegal? If you try to do hotspot then it works its not illegal, if it doesn't then they don't allow you to.
There's nothing illegal about mobile hotspot unless stated. The network carrier can simply block it instead of making it "illegal".

Can you clarify this statement? You got me confused in this part "(that is normally only for android)".
"Legal," most likely yes. It violates no law that I have am aware of.
In violation of your contract? That is a different question. You'll have to read it.

Might Be Okay...
Well, I'm using my phone as a mobile hotspot right now just as a backup while my Wi-Fi connection is down. I have Simple Mobile too, but I'm using a rooted HTC HD2 for that. I think it's legal, but watch out if you're using like 2GB or more in a short period of time. I just got a message saying they could have me suspended for breaking terms of service. They never mentioned anything about mobile hotspots, but I'm guessing it's because I've used about 3GB in the last three weeks and I have yet to fix my Wi-Fi connection.
