i rooted my sony ericsson x10, only becuse of the development of a one-click root app.
I don't understand a word of this 'adb', etc..
As i understand it, i need to be rooted to change:
themes
lock screen
boot animations..?
Do i need to be rooted to use the usb "host mode" cable, to connect external usb flash drive, etc?
I only really would like to apply a lock screen and boot animation from here, and use ext flash drive for media transfer.
I have no other desire that may require root..

Lock screen I can't say, boot animation requires root, you can do file transfer direct from the pc with the moto usb cable that you already have of course, but SD card, USB/mass storage requires root.
OK, so the host mode cable i have on its way is useless until i "root"..?

Actually, I guess that the upgrade to 3.1 was supposed to give USB host capability, but since I updated and rerooted all at the same time I never tested it out. Why don't you gie it a shot when you get that cable?
Will do, but for now, will await official update to 3.1

Hi Guys & Gals,
I am having a problem getting my Desire to mount the SD Card to a PC recently. This happened with ShadowHawk v21 and it is happening with Endymion v3.0. I have put MIUI on there and it works fine, so I know the hardware is still good.
I don't get any option to mount the card as USB storage from the phone when I connect it to the PC at all.
Any ideas - am I doing something stupid or is this a 'feature' of the newer Sense ROMs?
Thanks in advance for your help,
Simon
If you have 4EXT Recovery, try to mount it from recovery, there is an option to mount usb storage. Maybe thats a way to go?
Thanks for the suggestion, but if I am doing that then I may as well just put the SD-Card into my USB adapter and connect it direct to my PC.
It just seems to me that this has only been an issue on the more recent Sense ROMs, so I was wondering if it was a known problem or not.
Okay, did not know you had an adapter ;p
But if its working it can be good to know for others facing the same problem, so you may try it out anyways
Same Problem
I have the same problem. Since upgrading to Endymion v3.0. Didn't have this problem in Endymion v2.2 or v2.1 or any other ROM.
Have you managed to fix it?
Unfortunately not mate. I stuck CyanogemMon & MIUI back on and they both work correctly with the USB connected for mounting the SD card, but the newer Sense ROMs don't seem to work correctly with this. I assume it must just be a few of us that suff3r from this - if it affected everybody then I think there would be more of an uproar
Maybe you should ask on the Endymion thread. I can't post in any development threads until I have 10 posts...

Finally got round to doing that. Got a reply from 'enigmaamit' with the following;-
I don't know why you're getting that problem mate. I've been on Endymion through all it's versions since the very beginning, and USB access has worked just fine on all of them. The PC always recognizes my phone as a mass storage device when i want it to.
That said, there is a small bug that USB disconnects when you pull down the notification drawer while connected as USB storage. However, there is a workaround that works beautifully and consistently for me as described below:
Here's my set-up in case it helps:
Disable the feature that asks you whether to connect as "Charge only" or "USB Mass storage" and set it to Charge only by default.
Then, whenever you connect to PC via USB cable, just pull down the notification drawer and select USB mode when you want to transfer files.
However, while connected, if you pull down the notification drawer, the USB often disconnects.
I've found that if you go to RCMIX tweaks and select "Default Quicksettings", under Notification settings, that problem disappears, and the USB doesn't disconnect anymore, even when you pull the notification drawer.

Nice of you to spread the word. I'm sure more people will benefit from this post.
As you have most probably learnt by experience, it's always a good idea to post ROM specific queries on the ROM thread itself. Answers are more forthcoming from a community already on that ROM. And Endymion has a great support framework, with active, enthusiastic users and a gem of a man as a developer (Lowveld).
I've never seen a query that has gone un-discussed or un-solved over there yet. I'm glad you've joined the Endymion family.
For those that haven't, i invite you to come on over and have a go, we have cookies!!
Thanks for the tip! I'll definitely try it out...

Something is very wrong with this.
I had Endymion 3.0 and after realizing that I don't like it... Got back to Cyanogen(full wipe) and my USB mass storage connection doesn't work anymore at all, there isn't an notification/option to change it to anything from charge only, usb tethering says usb not connected. Not in bootloader, recovery, rom. Tried several SD cards, second usb cable, couple of computers, older Cyanogen builds. Nothing.
How to get back stock rom, no recovery and s-on without USB so I can send it for repair?

OK, so I've spent an ENTIRE day researching this on tons of sites and Youtube (videos not helpful..they skip basic stuff...assuming one would know) and have tried rebooting into fastboot mode holding the volume down button and it doesn't even do that! so...my hard drive and SD card have all these files I'm told to download and have... Ive DLed Ti Backup, ROM manager and Superuser App on the tablet, but obviously, they wont work if you are not rooted... duh, so what is the EASIEST way in PLAIN English to root this Tablet!!?? I have the USB cable, USB debugging on and nothing works! what am I doing right or wrong?? My goal is to get ICS ROM on it after unlocking/rooting my Xoom... ALL I want is ICS on it already... can anyone help via EMail..??? smh.... thanks!
I'm quite confused with this one. Here's what's happened so far.
I was on AOKP Build 31 with CWM touch 5.8.2.1 and decided I want to go back to stock and start fresh. I found a mostly stock 9.2.1.17 from a thread in XDA titled "[ROM] TF101 Rooted Stock 9.2.1.17 + bootloader + modded recovery US and WW" (sorry, can't post links). I downloaded, checked the MD5, made a nandroid, wiped data/cache/Dalvik and installed the ROM. After doing that, I have been unable to get my device to connect to any computer via USB. I tried restoring my backup and also re-flashing a fresh copy of AOKP Build 31. I am able, however, to connect via ADB using TCP/IP. When I plug the device into my Windows 7 Pro, 64-bit I don't get any sort of notification or sound. When I plug the device into my Ubuntu 11.10, 64 bit I also don't have a connection showing up using the 'sudo lsusb' command. The strangest thing is that when I plug the device in the screen turns on, so clearly the USB cable is not the cause. I've tried two different Win. 7 computers, my Ubuntu box and a Fedora box (and multiple USB ports on each computer). Any suggestions?
Try this, Settings> Storage> hit the 3 dots sign at top right corner, hit USB computer connection,
Un check the MTP box and check it again. If that don't work try turning off USB debugging

Tried that on one of the Win. 7 boxes and the Ubuntu box, no success.
Have you tried reinstalling the drivers? I had to do that when I went from stock to custom rom.
This happens a lot. Something to do with the bootloader not getting flashed properly or something.
Get the full ICS ROM from Asus website and flash it.

You can root it (rather painfully and obscurely) by using an update.zip with the version of the firmware Razorclaw needs to work, and root in tablet and then flash in tablet. Downgrading to the required honeycomb might fix the usb too. I've never had to use ADB to do anything on my tf, aside from developing

Ive rooted a bajillion devioces and never thought to look there when my tf101 stopped connecting, ive rebooted my pc and it a hundred times
Thanks for the DOH! moment !!
I connect my tablet to my two laptops, one is win 8.1 and the other osx, neither shows any sign of knowing the tablet is connected at all.
it does not prompt me to instal any drivers, i dont see it in device manager though i could be missing it. definitely doesnt show up in file explorer as a drive. have tried switching from mtp to ptp and back again. I have no dea. The same cable when connected to the charger works fine, but no sign of life on a computer.
I'm trying to root it and get CM10 on there but this is stopping me in my tracks.
edit: i also just tried an older windows xp computer, no luck their either.

Tried both that I own. And it charges fine. Also tried connection the keyboard dock and then the cable to that. Out of ideas.
USB debugging has been enabled and disabled multiple times. Multiple reboots. I'm going to try rolling back the firmware from .10 to .8

You don't need to root it to install a custom ROM, you need to unlock the bootloader.

Well its successfully unlocked. But I'm like 99% sure I need root for goo manager to install twrp. Or USB to work to install twrp via fastboot.... No?

I wouldn't start installing custom anything without working fastboot and adb access.
- Make sure the contacts of the connector and cable are clean.
- Do the equivalent of "lsusb" under OSX to check if the tablet is detected.
- Try different USB ports.

Have tried five ports accross three computers on three operating systems. Two usb cables, and the use of the dock should have bypassed any dirty connections. I can try Ubuntu live boot tomorrow if it comes to that.
Sent it off to get fixed, they verified they had the same problem, waited weeks for a replacement part, they replaced it and sent it back. And its doing the samn damn thing. So done with this tablet.

No, and I would think a factory reset which I've done multiple times would have undone that even if I had on accident some way.

How do you connect the tablet to the PC? Always through the dock USB?
Do you have the same problem when connecting the tablet directly? Undock it, use the original cable to connect to different USB ports.
Hey all,
My USB broke i guess. I tried different cables and different computers, but nothing recognizes the device at all (not anything in device manager).
My TF700 is unlocked, so no warranty I want to flash a custom ROM, but my tablet isn't rooted and has stock ROM and recovery. Anything I can do or is my only option to get it fixed by asus?

Try cleaning the connector - at least it helped someone I know who even used an external battery charger for his phone for a few months because he thought USB was broken.

I tried this, but it doesn't seem to help. It's only the usb connection not working, I still can charge the tablet.
I've also tried my girls TF300 which works with all my cables and my computer, so I'm afraid it's the usb connector on my tablet.
But there is no way to get root acces or a custom recovery without usb?

You could try to downgrade to 10.6.1.14.8 by putting the firmware zip on a microSD card (there are guides about details how to name the zip that I don't remember right now), then you could root it with Motochopper, and then you can install a custom recovery using dd to mmcblk0p4 and rebooting.
The problem: No safety net. If something goes wrong in the process, the normal way to fix it is fastboot via USB - if your USB doesn't work, then the tablet would be bricked.
Motochopper won't work if there is absolutely no USB connection since you have to run it from your PC

This is probably a stupid suggestion but I'm good at making those, is there any way he could copy the required files to a micro SD then insert the card back into the tablet and then use a terminal emulator to update his recovery?

I think for rooting you need at least a shell with the "shell" user account (which has more privileges than a normal app), but the terminal emulator runs under its own app user account.
