So I was in the Dinc forum browsing around. I ran across a thread discussing texting and talk at the same time. The consensus is that cdma/gsm phones (Dinc 2 and ThunderBolt) will receive this feature soon. Since the D2G is such a phone, I wonder aloud if it will come to pass that we will also be freed from our one or the other bonds.

Any links to this?
I am not certain if this link will work. I am using xda app on the phone. But if it does not, you can find the info in the HTC Incredible forum under the "OTA Gingerbread update coming soon" thead.

i thought for sure that data/voice at the same time was a limitation of cdma phones, the thunderbolt already has data/voice at the same time since its a 4g phone and thus doesnt have that limitation.
I guess I'll have to repost.
Almost any GSM phone that supports GPRS (and anything above GPRS) can run voice and data at the same time; it's implied for GPRS class 4 and higher, and for anything HSPA.
The only thing preventing that is the carrier's network settings.
LTE is, in essense, a “data-only” network, and voice goes over LTE using the exact same means as data, i.e. it gets sent as your regular IP packets along with anything “data”-related like web browsing etc; in LTE the only difference between voice and data is that VoIP packets have the maximum possible QoS priority.
Therefore, Thunderbolt, as an LTE phone, always uses only data, no “voice” in the CDMA/GSM sense of that term.
It has nothing to do with 4G, 3G, or 2G. My 2003-made Motorola V547 was a 2G phone with GSM+EDGE, and was GPRS class 4 supporting simultaneous voice and data.
Same for my old Ericsson T68, which was GSM+GPRS, and also supported it.
Texting is done on the 1xrtt overhead messaging on cdma. Data is done on EVDO. Texting during a call works fine, data during a call is not possible unless on wifi.

As of now VZW is not doing voice over IP on the LTE network. 4g phones support voice and data at the same time as the voice is still on 1x and data is on LTE as stated in above post- two different network elements.

The Tbolt can do voice and data at the same time while on 3G. It's a chip (SVDO) in the phone that allows this to be possible.

Does anyone know of a way to be able to talk on the phone and surf the web at the same time on the D2G?...I had a HTC Hero before this phone and I could do it with it...surely to god I can on a Droid 2 Global

If you're on Verizon (or any CDMA carrier), the only way you could do it would be if your data connection was via Wi-Fi. CDMA networks do not support both voice and data at the same time (although there's hope with the HTC Thunderbolt 4G device soon to be released).
So is this Verizon's first phone where data service stays active while on the phone? Or is this a feature that comes with hotspot?
Thunderbolt - BAMF Remix 1.5
First VZW phone that does it.
The chip they used for the CDMA radio is the first ever to allow voice and data at the same time over CDMA. Also, if you're in a 4G area, it works by keeping voice on CDMA, and of course using LTE for data.
Really? I would browse to google documents all the time while having someone on speakerphone so I could take notes...
I thought Iphone was the only smart phone that couldn't that.

if you had wifi, it would use cdma for voice and wifi for data... i used to hate those att commercials saying we couldnt because i almost always could lol
I have used it for a week, and I can tell you this: You CAN do that talk and browse the web thing at the same time on 4G AND 3G. I did it many times, and no problems. No need to jump on wifi or anything.
Shocked the hell out of one of my co-workers today doing this, since he was a die-hard AT&T fanboy and always tried to throw that up in my face, lol.
He went on to accuse me of secretly using WiFi or that it was a fake Verizon case or something.
Yeah when i read that on their website under the features I was completely sure that it would be Simultaneous voice + data ONLY in a LTE area (Like the HTC EVO and WiMax), but i was incorrect.
You can use Voice + Data while under 3G or 4G, but only if you are in an eHRPD area. (Settings > About > Network > Mobile Network Type) If it shows CDMA EVDO rev a or 1xRTT or whatever, you may not Call and use Data.
EDIT: Also, from what is available on the Net about eHRPD, this is the 'transition' between CDMA/EVDO and LTE.... It would be my guess that this means that anywhere eHRPD is available.... they should expect LTE in 2011. Just my two cents...

Your co-worker is an idiot.
I use it all the time together its amazing I am always in 4g territory so I literally don't touch WiFi on phone. Gotta love unlimited 4g for same price

Hmmm.. I have been wondering why Verizon isnt using this feature to silence ATT fanboys, but I guess not everywhere with 3G supports it, so they dont want to really advertise the feature if it doesnt work everywhere.
They are most likely trying to perfect their system, as there are probably bugs (not that have seen) they would like to squash out - before going out to squash at&t.
Although i do laugh when i see that at&t commercial now....

No, eHRPD has more to do with LTE smooth handoffs than simul voice and data.

Probably cuz the iPhone doesn't use it yet?. I have only seen iphones on those att commercials doing the talk and browse thing.
I talked to a Verizon rep and asked them why all their phones didn't do this, they said something along the lines of because they wanted to keep calls on a seperate networks that way it can help stablize and keep from getting dropped calls.. Not sure how accurate that is.. I would think if they are on seperate networks then they could both be utilized..
Tbolt has two radios in it. One for voice/sms and slow data, the other for 3g/4g. That is why you can browse and talk at the same time (as long as you're in 3G or LTE area).
Never bothered to look this up and can't find any info on AT&T ...

At some point when ATT has migrated all of their coverage to LTE capability the network will switch to LTE for voice. Neither ATT or Verizon use LTE for voice calls yet.
Likely within a decade they will turn off their traditional TDMA based GSM voice network altogether and everything will be on their LTE spectrum.

I'm wondering if they'll throttle LTE during phone calls as well. Hmmmmm
pretty sure they only use gsm for calls, as people without data plans that have smartphones (dont know why they do that ) still make calls and text, just cant access teh interwebz

No you didn't get it. Even without LTE they slow down any connection when on a phone call to save bandwidth. You can be getting 6 mbps down and then make a phone call and barely hit one and the upload is like 0.00mbps.
Test it out. Immsuremit will be like that once LTE is voice enabled.

The current deployments of LTE are based on the LTE Release 8 with LTE used for data and 3GPP/3GPP2 (i.e. GSM/UMTS/CDMA/EVDO) for voice.
This will all change when the carriers move to the VoLTE (Voice over LTE), which is most likely a few years away.

Yes, from what I understand, there is no standard yet for Voice over LTE, the various stakeholders are still working this out, and its still a long ways away.
So for the present time (and near future), LTE is data only (and no voice) on all carriers.

I wasn't agreeing or disagreeing. I was stating something entirely different from the OP.
Its not widely known that AT&T throttles all data speeds during calls and I was being sarcastic by adding that once you can do LTE over voice, they'll throttle that too during calls only.
Run a speedtest next time your on the phone and you'll see. Doesn't matter what data plan you have, they throttle all data speeds during calls.

Agreed, I told At&t that i wanted to cancel my service because Im paying for hotspot and its shif during calls. I was never told this before signing up for service. Im upset because hspa+ is enough for my needs and will work during calls but they had to go and throttle the service!

The standard is pretty clear.
You have 3 options for voice under LTE (as of Rel8):
VoLTE - IMS VoIP using AMR
CS (circuit switched) Fallback - basically have the phone camp in the LTE network, and fallback to 3GPP/3GPP2 only in the case of voice calls
SVLTE (Simultaneous Voice and LTE) - the scenario I already described and launched with most NA carriers
The reason for the delay in VoLTE deployment is the difficulty (and cost) in implementation. VZW, AT&T, etc. would probably want to recoup investments in the 3G network already in place before they spend more for VoLTE. At some point in the future, recovering air spectrum from the 3G band is going to be a higher priority than re-using the deployed 3G network, and that's when we'll see more VoLTE movement.
I just got my HTC One S on T-Mob. Connected to my wifi network at home and not to T-Mob's network, does browsing add to my data use on T-Mob? Do calls get posted to my voice minutes use?

The data does not count towards limits. I don't use WiFi calling.
Sent from my HTC_Amaze_4G using xda premium
In the U.S., anything you do through WiFi does not count towards your plan min/data.
I think you have to make sure the free wifi calling is "activated" through Tmo here in US. I think. I don't use it either.
I never could get the concept of Tmo charging anything at all for using your own network to route calls. Takes the strain off their system and they charge for it.
Sorry, the thread title is just too funny. How much "wife data" do you really need?
Wifi data (for web browsing, etc) shouldn't affect your mobile data limit. Wifi calling in theory should not affect your voice minutes, assuming your account and SIM card are set up for it. But I do know the older (2yr+) TmoUS accounts' terms were still deducting minutes even with WIFI calling - if you are not sure, you should call to check.

I agree, however it is still funneled through their servers. It might relieve the stress on their towers, but it operates nearly the same on their network (unless you use Google Voice or some other VOIP service).
How do i make the phone run on
A) LTE only
B) 3G only
C) 1X only
Thanks in advance for any help!
Just data without regular texting or calling?
All data settings are set by changing the radios set up.
You can toggle between these through phone info app.
Sent from club Clean Rom
I don't think you can do that, but phone info app might be a good idea to look at. It might help battery life since the phone is only running one radio rather than two.
i used the phone info app, and when i press lte only it takes me back to the default lte/cdma whatever thing. any ideas how to make it stick to just LTE
You know LTE only would also disable texting/calling? I'm sure it can be done but I'm not sure how.

Exactly. Our phones are NOT VoLTE (Voice Over LTE). LTE is only used for data at this point. There are no Verizon phones on the market at this point that support VoLTE, although Verizon is reportedly in testing. Ten years from now, Verizon will probably kill (shut down) their 3G and 1X networks entirely, like they did to analog several years back.
Just for information sake, Voice calls on the Verizon network ALWAYS go out over the 1X network (currently). 3G was never designed to handle voice (it is data only), and VoLTE is still in testing at Verizon.
It would be awesome if you could do 1x and 4g radios and disable 3g. You might be able to get more battery life out of the phone. I have a 4200 may battery that lasts me 2 days (48 hours).
