My local Walmart dropped T Mobile in the past week. The Best Buy mobile store at my local mall has as well. Do they know something we don't know? Just seems funny. Is Tmo still at your local wallyworld?
Out here in northern California, you haven't been able to buy T-Mo at Best Buy for a couple of years. I think it's nothing more than a contractual thing cuz you can still buy T-Mo at Fry's. Could be that T-Mo didn't want a big chain retailer competing with them or just that they wouldn't cut the deal that Best Buy wanted. The other thing you could try is to ask someone at Walmart. They may not know but you won't know till you ask.

Those two are the most consumer unfriendly store out there - it is all about margin (on everything ate WB and big ticket items ate WW). If they are not squeezing enough out of the deal - the would drop anyone.
Tmo deals are available everywhere (best ones directly for TMo retention), so probably getting hard for Worst Buys and Wallyworld to skin off enough from their sales.
Was at a WalMart last night (not my regular WalMart) and saw the T-Mobile display there. My local, regular WalMart still carries it, also. So, it must not be universal.
Sidenote: This was the first WalMart that I had ever seen an actual wireless department set up outside of the electronics department. It was in the front of the store, so it was like one of those mini-stores inside WalMart, and they only had Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile. Maybe it is like a previous poster said, for the stores that no longer carry T-Mobile, WalMart and T-Mobile may not have been able to come to a contractual agreement that everyone could agree with.
ETA: It could be the same as the scenario where my former employer is an eyeglass & contact lenses retailer, and used to have their own spots inside WalMart. About 10 years ago, WalMart decided that they wanted to launch their own eyeglass & contact lens min-store inside the stores. So, as each one of our store contracts ended, WalMart was not renewing them, thus allowing them to do their own thing.
Walmart here in lexington ky had tmo for years! They recently dropped it and sprint has taken over there spot!
Two WAL-MART I was at yesterday still were selling the phones.

interesting. I've heard that Walmarts sell a lot of regional stuff based on local needs. But I would've thought that their TMobile contracts would be based on their huge customer base. Sprint is what the clerk said took up Tmos space here as well...
Both Worst Buy and Wal-Crap sell TMO products here in Los Angeles.
best buy hear in south texas hasn't sold t-mobile for a while.but walmart still does. they even have their own brand that can only be bought at walmart Straight Talk that runs on t-mobile network.

Friend just emailed me....the Captivate is now just 1 cent. Not a bad deal, eh?

This is Amazon, much like WireFly,LetsTak and any other reseller they can price the phone at whatever price theyd like since they make comission off the monthly plans more so than the actual hardware. Theyll take a big hit ($200-$300) on the phone in order to make it back up with the plan.
BTW this is for new contracts only via Amazon, renewals are still $99 and Family is $149.
I just ordered one from Amazon for a penny. So long Sprint and so long samsung moment (blech)
I ordered mine from Amazon along with 3 other phones on a new family plan with 1400 minutes. Total cost after shipping: $.04.
makes me feel I made a mistake getting the phone in the first place. Good thing I like the phone.

Why would you feel like you made a mistake getting the phone if you like it just b/c the price went down? Hell, I paid $175 for mine (Family plan upgrade-secondary line) and I'm still happy with my purchase. I agree that it is annoying to see them offer such good deals for new users and screw over "loyal" customers though...
AT&T charged me $100, they gave me the $100 discount for being a loyal customer. Funny thing is i joined when the iPhone 3G came out.
I tried to get my wife to get it for 1 cent but she insists on getting the EVO, loyal yo sprint.

Loyal enough to pay 240 dollars more over the length of her contract? I've been with Sprint for 5 years and I'm not THAT loyal to them

To be fair Amazon's a dealer like Wirefly. They make nothing on the sale of phones but get paid on selling the contracts. The Captivate is 99 dollars if you are renewing or adding a line on Amazon. Still a better deal than anywhere else. As a NEW AT&T customer I would have spent $199 on the phone at the AT&T store. I was all about to buy a Vibrant yesterday for 70 bucks on Amazon when I found the penny deal on the Captivate. So here I am.
Difference is, when you buy it from the AT&T store, they cover your warranty for the year - and their warranty is great.
If you buy it anywhere else, you have to deal with Samsung directly unless you get lucky and AT&T ships you a replacement regardless.

Not so much a mistake, I am happy with my purchase. It's just the price that we pay to get the best in tech before everyone else.
I've never done that before, and used to tout that my motorola karma was pretty much the same thing as a smartphone.
Obviously I had no clue what I was talking about.

It's what I was told from AT&T and when I spoke to Letstalk, Wifefly and so on. But FWIW, people have stated that they just called AT&T and they sent them a replacement - but that could just be a YMMV. I would try to verify as well before you add insurance in case you don't need to.
But for $.01, I'm jealous!
Amazon has such a great rep that I doubt they'd have entered the Wireless sales business without some assurances from carriers. Wirefly has a shady rep from what I was able to google.
i paid full retail cause i wasnt up for upgrade... and thats for two phones too.. -_-. bye 1000
The thing many of you guys are not realizing is that this price and other similar deals are for completely new accounts only. Upgrades or even new family plan lines will bump up the price to $100-150. Under the circumstances most of the people I know who paid for Captivates, they wouldn't have saved any more money if they had waited, as everyone I know who has a Captivate was already an AT&T customer.
And quite frankly, while the Captivate is a great phone, it's not worth putting up with AT&T over if you're on a good carrier, especially since there is/will be a Galaxy S for all major carriers.

True, but reading through Amazons policy, they only support the phone for 30 days - as do all online retailers besides AT&T itself (they have a full year). Other online retailers pass the warranty to Samsung. But for the period Amazon does cover it - they have great customer service.
I'm not saying that's bad as I never dealt with Samsung for warranty purposes. I just know that AT&T deals with warranty issues very well. But regardless, $.01 for this phone is an amazing deal. The chance of needing a replacement post-30 days might not even occur for you - and if it does - you can always try AT&T for replacement.
i see a lot of good deals on amazon, wirefly, lets talk.... but i dont know if i can trust those websites or just go to at&t... i really think im gonna choose a captivate over the iphone 4. seeing all the various homescreen mods on a thread here made me want it more lol. so where did u guys get it from and how much? if u got them not at at&t how does the it change ur service plan? does it stay the same? thanks everyone and hope to get a captivate, root and enjoy? im coming from a tilt 2 running one of nrg'z ROM's and have android 2.2 as well . cant wait to see froyo on this beast!
I got mine from Amazon, had to change/add the data plan (didn't get grandfathered in). I think letstalk is the only one that provides an option during checkout to "keep current unlimited plan" as of right now.
Amazon is definitely the best price for just the phone, but if you want to keep your data plan, I believe letstalk is the one you have to go to. You don't confirm any changes until you submit the order just to check, I did the same thing when I was shopping around.
Well I bought mine from a corporate store on launch day of the phone. I got to keep my unlimited data plan because otherwise I would have bought it out right at that point.
HTH,

Where was it? I was about to buy one from craigslist for $350. Would anyday prefer the phone without contract at that price.
And was that a Samsung corporate store?
$199.99+tax, upgrade, 11AM EST opening day
Got two,
For the wife - Free with an contract renewal from Letstalk.
For me - Sold old iphone 3GS 32 gig (in contract till march'11), and invested the money on unopened Captivate of Craigslist for $330 USD, still have about $100 in pocket to look at avialable options to upgrade with contract revewal come march.
Btw, will ATT honor the 1 yr warranty on the captivate bought off craigslist?
Um, probably not..
$99 from Lets Talk
I got mine at Best Buy through their Best Buy Mobile department and they price matched Wirefly which had it at $169.99 a few weeks ago. Funny thing is my contract extended, but I still have my upgrade discount for another phone too.
Bought it at Best buy on launch day for $199.
Contacted AT&T 29 days later to complain about GPS and told them I was switching carriers.
They offered to give me the phone for free.
Got my 199. credit and I'm good to go.
net cost: $0 for the phone

I'm surprised AT&T did that since the GPS issue has nothing to do with them. It's all Samsung's fault.

Anyone at AT&T should know a GPS problem is not due to the network. Bottom line is they will do anything to keep you under contract, probably even more so if you're one of those deviants that likes Android better than the iPhone, lol.
I got mine off eBay for $400. I saw it cheap on NewEgg and you could keep your unlimited data plan.
$99 at AT&T, kept my unlimited data plan from my iPhone 3G. Talked to customer service and they told me if you have unlimited data you will keep it as long as you keep a smart phone and dont switch your data plan.

Went to the mall to visit my local TMobile store and when I arrived they were hauling out all of the stock and their computers etc. The T Mobile person in charge told me it was just a physical inventory but two of the other reps are friends of mine and at first they said they could not say anything only they might be back looking different. After the while store was cleaned out they finally told me that if I wanted an Evo3d they could probably set me up with one in a few days. It looks like they are switching to Sprint, currently as of now there are no Tmobile stores within a 30 mile radius. I could understand switching to AT$T but why Sprint? I would rather deal with Sprint but just cannot understand why one of their stores would make the switch to Sprint before the deal with AT&T is even approved. Anyone else know anything or have seen or heard anything about T Mobile stores going to Sprint? This puts a whoile new light on whether or not I keep my replacement Sensation that arrives tomorrow.
its probably not a official t-mobile store.

Wow, same thing happened to me here in Illinois. Went into my local Mall and everything was gone. Sprint was right next to them, I ask the rep there if he knew what was going on and was told they just packed up and left. I also do not have another T-mobile store within 30 miles of me.

for the past couple months T-mobile have been pushing out dealers that have limited retail space (stores within stores) or unwilling to pay renovation in order to have more appealing like official mobile store.

I just found out that the gentleman I spoke with first was an actual T Mobile Dist employee of some sort. He was not very friendly and would not say anything except "physical inventory" as they carted the stuff away. It seems the store was Authorized Dealer (Into Mobile is the name of the firm (I believe) they were set up exactly like a so called corporate store.
most stores that are in the malls are independents, there is a official t mobile store across the street from our mall that has a t mobile store in it also, and its an independent dealer
Help me out My daughter is set for upgrade. she wanted a Nexus S. Sprint says it is no longer available. i have talked to telesales, stores, and retention. Does anyone know how to get one. from sprint using an upgrade has anyone recently gotten one? There are no other phones avail on sprint that she likes. The newer high end phones... in her words " are too big to put in a pocket of any pants I own" I had to laugh but very true
any help or input in appreciated
edit I am still on sprints everything plus family plan which does limit my options. I can only get an upgrade direct from sprint, I cannot use third party stores, otherwise I lose my plan.
Sadly Sales for the NS4G thru Sprint are discontinued . Your only option it seems is to get one secondhand. The GSM ones are much rarer to find for cheap. I've seen the 4G ones being sold for 30 bucks in great condition on Craigslist over here in NY.
What about best buy or amazon wireless
I'll gladly pay you Tuesday, for a hamburger today..........
thanks guys.... tried all that... I was actually had one in my hand at a third party retailer but they could not add it to my account because of the everything plus plan. and no phone is worth losing that
topic still open how to get one directly from sprint
You could always purchase one off of Craigslist. Not sure about your location, I see tons of Sprint NS posted here in MN. Have the seller meet you at the Sprint store, or if you are trusting that its ESN is clear... bring it into the store and have them set it up. I've seen people do this quite often.

I can get them unlocked from our local carrier ...
... but I'm in Canada. You could try them for a direct outright purchase. All their phones are unlocked. dmts.biz/cellular-phones/
They only have 20 or so left though. Debating setting my wife up with one. They're going on promo next week for $100 with a one year commitment, $0 on 2 yr. Not sure if they're dropping the outright purchase price though. Currently showing as $525 (Canadian ... about $520US LOL).
(Oddly, I was just in there talking to them two hours ago about it.)
http://www.cowboom.com/, owned by Best Buy. They have them used for $99, all rated on a condition scale and most with pictures.
Their condition scale is actually pretty generous. Mine was labeled a "5" (out of 10, I think) and labeled as light scuffs and scratches. I'll be damned if I could find anything beyond a couple of nicks on the battery cover tab.

I'm up for a phone upgrade with Verizon and am wanting to get a Razr M for it's superior specs over my Droid 2 and the fact the Razr M isn't the size of a 5 subject notebook like so many of the new phones seem to be now.
That said I know I can get it from Verizon, but have noticed Best Buy and Radio Shack both have the phone. I've heard bad stories about Best Buy screwing up peoples contracts or accounts and haven't heard good or bad about Radio Shack.
Also right now the Razr M is free AFTER rebate from Verizon if I visit their store while I believe Best Buy and Radio Shack both are free out the door.
What are your thoughts? Is there another, better, place I should go and renew?
Costco. Hands down. Free accessory bundle with every phone, USUALLY cheapest price in town and a 90 exchange period. No brainer.

I got a very reasonable price from ebay because the legal backing from PayPal. PayPal will back the buyer in the event of a misleading advertisement. You still need to be careful and do your research, but ebay has my vote.
Depends on which manufacturer
Costco is good. Amazon maybe?
If you are willing to do it online then checkout wirefly or amazon wireless
If you want it in person then give best buy a try. The reason you hear so many horror stories is because they are the most popular non carrier store to get phones. They get it right more often then they get credit for. you don't have to worry about that rebate crap and they can set it all up if your not too tech savy. Plus occasionally they run promotions where people who upgrade through them get a $50 prepaid visa debit card
I worked at a Verizon store, trust me. I've had to deal with plenty of ****ed up accounts another vzw retailer screw up.
