Zagg SmartBuds update [G2x compatible] - T-Mobile LG G2x

Ok, so here's an update [and more in depth review now that I've had them for a while] on my Zagg Smartbuds...
The short answer, I LOVE 'EM!
Now, for those w/larger attention spans, let's get into the dirt.
Let me start off by saying, I haven't found anything I don't like about them, well, the lack of a physical manual to explain how to operate it. Although, really, w/a single button and a volume slider, it didn't take to much to figure it out quickly:the slider is self explanatory and the button, well 1 click =pause/stop a quick double click=skip track.
Ok, bringing up the slider does bring up a minor annoyance, it is VERY sensitive! I've had it brush my shirt and either crank up or go silent a few times. AND a little movement goes a long way as well.
The main [only] music app I've been using since I rcvd my Smartbuds is the Google Music beta, just to get all my cards on the table. I bring this up because, if I pause the music from my earbuds for more than a few minutes, I can't restart it. The program shuts down, some sort of auto shut off that I can't find an option to disable. Off topic, but annoying none the less.
My favorite thing about these buds are the [line]sliders. There are 3, 1 below the volume slider 1 between the slider and the music control/mic and 1 below the ear buds. These are great because they allow you to create a loop to slip over your head so the weight of the cord isn't always pulling on the ear buds. Really nice for my job and for running.
The sound is crystal clear and the bass is solid. It's not going to shake your eyeballs, but for good quality bass, it's solid!
They also came w/multiple [5 total] ear buds to customize the fit. I know this is standard, but the most I ever got were w/my skullcandy's, and that was 3 total.
The cable is a pretty nice construct as well. They call it a tangle free cord and that's pretty accurate. There are multiple colors, meh, I guess I'mm happy, I went metal as opposed to black or [I think] red.
Now, these aren't advertised as water resistant. I was worried about issues due to sweat. I work outside in Oklahoma and we've already had a few triple digit days, so it's safe to say, I sweat like a whore in church. After about a month of usage, no issues. This is the reason why I no longer have my sc's.
I got them during the Memorial Day 50% off sale, but at their full price of 49.99, they still aren't to hard on the wallet.
If there is anything you're wondering about that I haven't touched on, let me know and I'll answer to the best of my ability.

I'll look again, but I believe the smart buds are not water resistant. I have them too, three of my friends have bought them after talking to me about them

I just checked out the website http://www.zagg.com/audio/smart-buds.php
They look good. These work for the phone as well? The video mentioned that but I don't see where the mic is.
My only concern is the ear bud style. i have a really hard time getting any of them to stay in my ears. I hate to spend 50 bucks and find they fall out.

Yes it works on our phone. The microphone is where the volume control/answer button is. It picks up on wind pretty bad though

Actually the mic is on the same area as the answer/pause/skip button is, but the volume slider is located lower on a separate piece than the mic and button.
As far as not being water resistant, I know they aren't. The reason why I used 'not advertised as' was more due to the fact that, even though they don't list them as such, these have held up w/me sweating in 100+ deg weather. So no, they are not water resistant, nor do the mfg claim them to be sweat resistant, but they still have held up where others have failed.

I have had the same issues, Unfortunately I can't say they will work for you, but they have a joint [this may be a bad way to describe it, but I'll post pics later tonight] that kind of anchors the ear bud in. PLUS the sliders that they have on the lines really help by keeping the line weight from trying to pull them out.

When did you get yours? There must've been a design change. I've only had mine for about a month. My volume slider is maybe 8" below my control button/mic, it puts the mic perfect for using w/o having to hold it or adjust it.
As far as the water thing, it's a good point you make, common sense is so rare it's damn near a super power any more. Good call.

I took the leap. Just ordered a pair. I found a 20% off coupon code that worked, plus free shipping.

Yeah, those are different. Has to be an old design. Got mine off the website and here's the pics.
Both, the left is the mic/button and is towards the ear buds and the right is the volume slider. The 2 spheres are the line sliders (there's 1 more also towards the buds)
The volume slider.
The control button/mic area.
And these are my ear buds.

I'll have to try that. w/o a manual, I've just been messing around w/them trying to figure out what they do. I'm sure I could go to the zagg site and possibly dl a manual, but until your post, I had thought I had them all figured out.

I have to check these out.
How is the sound quality.
What music do you use for reference???

for those looking for a nice quality and reasonably cheap pair on Amazon with universally good ratings:
http://www.amazon.com/GOgroove-Ergo...4?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1309446377&sr=1-4
I even dropped them in water by accident and they still work well.

The pair arrived in the mail quickly. Fast processing. Got them in time for vacation. They worked really well on the plane. The buds fit my ears decently. The sound is good and it blocked out some of the sound from around the plane. The call quality is good. I like the way they hang around the neck.

The sound quality is great. Be it highs, mids or lows, it all comes through w/clarity. Now I've stated before, the bass isn't going to shake your eyes, but then again, bass does not good quality sound make (yeah, that was intentional). It's how distinct everything is w/i the music, and that's what they deliver.
As far as my music, I'm fairly eclectic as it is, from Sinatra to Atreyu, Eminem to Blake Shelton. So, I may have clutch playing one second then Louis Armstrong comes up next on my shuffle. Yes, I even have classical. It all sounds good. I'd like to see what I could do w/it if I had a good equalizer app. I'm currently in the google Music beta and that's something I've already introduced as an idea. Wouldn't have to be complicated, even just a 3 band [although, I'd like to see a 5 band at least!]
Anyway, hope that kind of answers your questions. Sorry for how long it took, hell of a week at work gearing up for the 4th.

Funny story, I just flashed CM 7.1 and it comes w/DSP. Hell, it took 2 days before I knew what it did, and that's just because I was showing a friend the CM website trying to explain ROMs and rooting. Oh, and yeah, it's exactly what I wanted!
On a completely different note, these also work on my laptop as both ear buds and a microphone. Most recently w/my Rosetta Stone language and team speak (game chat) programs.

Could the ZAGG Smartbuds be draining battery? I had the buds plugged in on Thursday and Friday and found that the battery drained super fast, faster than the already bad battery life. As in 9% loss in one hour.
It did not occur to me it could be the smartbuds until this morning. I did not use them over the weekend and the battery was ok. This morning, I plugged them in and on the way to work had a short phone call (about 2 min). After an hour I noticed my battery was down 9%!
Anyone have any experience with this?

Very simple but effective way of making a dock!
I've been thinking of making one myself but have been wondering what to make it from.
A nice dark wood with a routed edge would look sweet i think!
(keep an eye on This thread, it could turn out well)

Oh, so you were serious with the edited out "you, sir, are a genius!" ! HA HAH... I thought you were just playing along with my self-deprecating video showing how dumb i was to forget the tip was protruding when i smacked the cable from the back side to wedge it into place.
Well, if you're serious, then, here's where to get every version of cable you might want... these guys have it all, and quality is great.

I think having a cherry wood would be beautiful...
I did that whole thing in 30 minutes because I was impatient, the cable had just arrived, and I wanted to see if it worked, so i was doing a rough version as a "proof of concept".... And I just started with the premise that if I drilled a hole at the angle that i want the desire to lean back at, and I drilled it slightly narrow so I have to wedge in the cable head (which has soft-plastic corners thus would wedge-in snugly), that the basic idea of embedding the microUSB connector at the correct angle would not be so hard....
but this, again, was a quick test... and i was making it up as i went along, with literal hacking of wood and screwdriver and hammer!
While I was just doing it fast and brainstorming at same time, i was thinking "what could i use to stabilize the back side of the desire so it was solid when i pressed the screen"... then i thought of those clear plastic acrylic things at office supply places -- two kinds -- either the clear business card holder, which would only provide a minimal back surface, probably not enough, or one of those 3x5 photo holders that display at pretty much the exact angle you'd want your phone to display.
http://www.azardisplays.com/productcart/pc/viewCategories.asp?idCategory=149
Well, just some ideas in case you decide to make one. would love to see your end result.
I just wonder though if you would do better to get a ready made dock and then make the outer casing be cherry wood such that it perfectly covers up all exterior facets while still having, ready made, those nice touches like spare battery charger as well...

No problem, I have been away from the site for many months and just getting back to XDA after long gap. ....
That is what I consider the be the greatest single widget made on the Android platform -- it is called EXECUTIVE ASSISTANT ... and as soon as I get time, i will be making videos that feature the various apps and widgets I use -- AND WHY.
Executive Assistant has been updated probably 5 more times since this video, and it keeps getting better and better. It is one of the most customizable pieces of functionality around.
It can be as small as a 1x2 widget or as large as a 4x4 widget...
In the 1x2, 1x3 and 1x4 modes, E.A. displays icons only -- THAT IS ALL YOU SEE on my display --- and you can configure it to show up to i think 6 different things:
email
SMS
phone calls missed or voicemail
twitter
facebook
RSS feeds
i thought maybe there was one more thing
But if you set it up as a 2x2 or 2x3 or 2x4, then the line above the icon displays the actual message information, and scrolls... tap the different icon at bottom, and in the same display space, it shows the detail info for THAT item, and so on.
If it's 3x and 4x, then you are seeing a lot more of the actual messages filling your home page.
HERE IS WHY I DO NOT USE anything more that 1x4 (actually now I just use 1x3): Because i don't need to have a widget take up all that extra space on my home screen -- because ONE TAP on the icon -- and it pops up a window that displays on top of the whole page. so, tap on twitter icon and pop up diplsays whole page showing all twitter feed, and SCROLLS. Then -- you want more? tap the icon again and it launches your selected twitter app .... or a different tap pops back down the window to its collapsed row of icons only.
It's truly amazing --- and you can select your prefered app for each function... so for voicemail, you could select visual voicemail from your provider.... for SMS you could select handcent... for email you could select the native gmail app or launch a browser...
ok thats all for now.
try it. there is a free version -- and yes -- it has some small ads... but you know what, there are a few apps worth paying for ---- this is one. Biut even if you dont want to pay? FREE with ads.
incredible -- likely to win a devvy award for android division at end of this year.

Wow, I have to say, that is pretty inventive! That's the first time I have seen product design from a user here where they have gone and found materials to actually match the look of a desktop background! very impressive --- I love it when people make custom stuff!
I have been away for months --- no, not locked in a mental institution, though at times it has felt like that -- but i have been away from all things related to the Desire -- and android. ... And coincidentally, without even looking here on this thread, i just ordered a dock a few days ago from hong kong. They have been available for several months, but i kept waiting to see if there would be any variations. Nope... Just the same 2 or 3 slight versions on same thing offered for Nexus One almost a year ago which all got slightly tweaked for the different connections of the Desire. There are a few different vendors...
I chose this one since it's basically all same stuff but this one sells the cradle with the extra battery charger, plus sends the extra battery.
The annoying thing about this ridiculous world-wide lack of support of 3rd party accessories for HTC smartphones is the shipping time... Everything from Hong Kong takes forever.
(joke) I think it must be against the law to air express anything. All they ever do, and I mean EVER do, is send airmail which takes weeks and weeks (/joke)
CURRENT LISTING on ebay, fyi:
http://cgi.ebay.com/CRADLE-SYNC-DOC...402576?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item4cf2959050
About $20 USD including shipping --- but again -- takes about 3 weeks to get, ugh.
Hi all!!!
I, too, am fashioning my own dock, however instead of doing it from wood, or from scratch, I'm kind of cheating.
I'm going to be re-purposing something else.
This:
It's basically a USB extension lead, but with an up angled end shoved into that plastic thing, I broke it today and so I thought...cheap and easy micro-USB dock! And so I'm almost finished getting myself a cheap and okay looking dock
When it's done I shall make a new thread and post high quality images
I definitely want to see this! I love original thinking! yeah!
p.s. i got my dock from china 2 days ago... You know life is a little cazy when I have not even had chnace to plug it in and use it. Ridicululous.
HEY, that raises a question.
Does anybody else have problems with LOOSE CONNECTIONS at the USB port at bottom of the Desire phone? I swear, my cables always come out way too easily -- whether in the car with cigarette lighter, or USB data cable to computer, or charging micro usb to charge the unit....
Cant tell you how many times I had it plugged in overnight only to find that in the morning it wasn't charged, and warning said "plug in now, battery extremely low"..
I have ruled out, in every case, the cable and connectors. They are all fine. So it has got to be the phone's USB port. It just doesn't seem to bs SNUG and tight. Does anyone else have this problem?
thank you

Dock is almost done, need to go to a hardware store for a couple of bits. It should be quite good, need a bit of acrylic at the back I think, to give it a bit to lean against.
I never have a problem really, even when I hang it upside-down for a few seconds it takes a while for it to fall out.

I don't have any pictures handy, but I used a large Binder Clip.. lifehacker.com / #!5747897 / how-to-build-a-car-mount-for-your-cellphone-from-office-supplies
I slowly bent the end of the "handles" and, because my pliers gouged into the metal, dipped them into rubber tool handle dip.
Works pretty decent.. though now I too am working on getting a mount that allows the camera to see the road.. AR Navigation FTW!

[Q] What is my wife doing wrong with her phones??

Ok so i have an unusual problem...well my wife more specifically...in the last year or so my wife has had 3 different phones, all on verizon. The HTC Incredible, HTC Thunderbolt, and currently the Samsung Galaxy Nexus.
Each phone has begun giving her freezing and random reboot problems after only a couple weeks use.
The Inc was mine before she got it and i NEVER had any problems with freezing/reboots. And it was never rooted.
The thunderbolt was bought used from Gazelle(thru ebay) and also not rooted when the problems started( i did root/flash rom afterwards but the problem came back). I also had a different thunderbolt and never had these issues.
And now we are on the Galaxy Nexus (both bought brand new right from Verizon). She is once again having freezing and phone power off problems.
What the heck could she possibly be doing to her phones to cause this?!?
If any more info is needed please just ask.
Thank You!!!
What are the external variables that have changed? ie is she charging the phone in a different car? Aftermarket batteries? That's weird though, I cant see it happening on 3 phones...
Had an issue with software once that killed 4 phones. Something about overclocking an the phones frying out.

He mentioned one of the phones had never been rooted, so I doubt it was an overclock issue. Still, cant rule anything out at this point.
She used the same charger for the two HTC phones. But a brand new one with nexus. She has had many different car chargers over this time period. Always loses them ...don't ask me how lol. But unless she's neglected to tell me something, no other outside variables have changed that I can think of.
And as far as software, it would be only non root apps. All three phones were never over clocked. And only thunderbolt rooted.

Haha! I feel like you could be right. On both phone and driving lol. I guess to give me something to experiment with, does anyone have any recommendations for a task killer app that can kill any app automatically after you leave the app? Like say one minute after you close any app it will be completely closed so its not using ram anymore.
My Girlfriend had the same problem, I figured out, by finally opening one of the phones after buying a new one.
That they were all water damaged, they weren't red though, only pink. So it indicated that the phone had been in a humid area. Not underwater.
So I asked her, it seemed she brought her phones to the bathroom. (I do too) But her showers were so long, that the room gets humid and mist comes into the phone, making it "sweat" a little.
So ask her, does she take the phone into the bathroom or kitchen? Could be it.
P.S: Now shes got an Xperia GO. No problems sofar.
My experience with random freezes are mostly when the phone is doing background syncing.
I Think some app's might update (or maybe she installed new apps) and one of them is crashing the system.

she does in fact take it into the room when showering. I do as well, but I always put it under a towel or something of the such. so this is most definitely a possibility. what do i check to see if there is water damage? I don't have her Thunderbolt anymore but i have the Inc and obviously shes still using the Nexus. So i could check those.
The one thing that i didnt note that i forgot i did, was that i rooted and rommed the Inc just for the heck of it about a two months ago to use it as an mp3 player. I didnt have any issues while playing music (and disconnected from data all the time obviously, and from wifi majority of the time)

yea that has always been a concern of mine, if its some app that she has downloaded on each phone, that is doing this.
I wish i could have foreseen this coming so i could have noted all the apps on the phone prior to wiping/getting rid of phone. But she's no help when i try to ask what apps she always makes a point of downloading.

The one thing that i didnt note that i forgot i did, was that i rooted and rommed the Inc just for the heck of it about a two months ago to use it as an mp3 player. I didnt have any issues while playing music (and disconnected from data all the time obviously, and from wifi majority of the time)

Well, open the phone, take out battery, and there should be either a White, Pink or Red sticker on there, next to the brown charging things. Else theres some inside the phone.
Red: Heavy water damage (Swim)
Pink: Misty, humid water damage.
White: Normal.
Heres some pictures from my Arc, which had small incident in a cup of tea water.

I'll be sure to look once she gets home tonight.
And FYI a method I found that worked great when my sister dropped her phone in a toilet was, get battery out and put in a bag with a lot of rice. Sucked the moisture right out.
Thanks for the response. And thank you everyone so far for your responses. I hope I get this figured out. I'll post back again once I've gotten my hands on her phone.

Why or how do people drop their phone in the toilet? I Just can't understand how they manage to do that. It's not like you are going to answer phone call's while doing your business on the toilet. Maybe they are writing text messages... But still, I just can't see why people can't wait a few minutes until their done.
or maybe she just didn't like the phones you gave her..

Think UV light will fix your OnePlus One yellow band completely? Think again...

Received my OnePlus One yesterday and I have to say I am completely head over heels in love with it.
But..... I'm OCD when it comes to my electronics and of course mine had to come with the nasty yellow banding at the bottom.
I'm thinking I might have gotten a customer's return which is weird because it was completely sealed, I had to open it by pulling the threaded tab just like in all the unboxing videos. When I went into gallery, there were about 100+ personal pictures of some random dude and his family, a bunch of downloaded crap, ringtones, other 3rd party browsers, Amazon apps, ect. Hell I even got some full length movies on there, Transformers and a bootleg cam'd version of Edge of Tomorrow.
My guess is that OnePlus is putting customers returns into new packages and sending them out without even fully wiping them correctly. My unit looked like it was never touched, all the screen sticker ect. wow...just wow.
Anyways back to the yellow band, so I followed the advice of people all over the forums to use UV light to try and fix the issue. Well, good thing my mother in law owns a nail salon, I asked if I could take one home for a night. Took it out to the garage and went to work...
On the positive side it actually does help....a little. From a scale of 1-10, 10 being very yellow at the bottom and 1 being completely white at the top, under the UV light for 10 minutes, the yellow was reduced to I'd say a 7.
Bad news is that it doesn't improve any further after that, I put it in there for another 10 minutes and it didn't make a difference. Went crazy and left it in there for 45 minutes, still no improvement. Don't know if the UV damaged my digitizer but touch sensitivity seems to be degraded. Doesn't register my touches as nicely as before...
So there you have it, I left it in a professional nail salon UV machine for about an hour, way more than the recommended 15 minutes, it improved it a little bit but seemed to have messed with the touch sensitivity of the device.
Use UV at your own risk, I tried it and it helped but didn't fix it completely. I love the device too much so I'll be ordering another one when I get a chance.

Another thing during work today I was experimenting with it and noticed if you apply light heat from a heat gun (lowest setting) the yellow COMPLETELY disappears. Unfortunately when it starts cooling down the yellow comes back.

I left my OnePlus in the sun on the first morning after I got it. I put it in the morning sun while I got ready for work and made breakfast. On a scale of 1-10 with 10 being beyond unacceptable the phone started as a "5". I could definitely see it but it was clearly a "I'd be the only one to notice" amount of yellow. After about 1 hour of direct morning sun on a 75 degree morning it's a "1" now. Just a slightest of slight hints of yellow that may be the warm calibration of the phone.
That's my experience with the whole mess.

That's insane man, though not very surprising of OnePlus at this point. I guess paying $360 for a device of this caliber will numb any indignation. Did you buy it directly from OnePlus using an invite? What is the supposed build date of your phone? Where did it ship to you from? Everything seemed perfectly new when I got mine, the only thing that I thought was odd was the lack of any documentation, you know like a user guide, warranty, warnings etc. Did you get any?
As far as the yellowing goes, I feel that it is slowly fading away, and I haven't even exposed it to any California sunshine or heat, I've mostly used it in air conditioned areas.
I got mine without any defects, but I don't think keeping it under UV light for an hour would do good to any phone.
Why not root it and tweak RGB values with trickster to at least make it unnoticeable?
People bashing everyone but themselves as always.

There is no need to use mods to adjust the RGB values on this device. You can do it with the stock ROM.

You can only control Hue, Saturation, Contrast, Intensity with the stock ROM. You cannot adjust RGB values, you'll need a custom kernel with this commit in order to adjust the RGB and I'm sure later down the line, there'll be gamma controls similar to the N5 on the OPO
I don't understand this yellow band madness.
If it will really go away just by exposing the phone to sunlight, well, just use the phone normally and it will go away soon or later.

Yes I ordered it directly from oneplus.net, I purchased the invite on eBay. Paid $100 for the invite... I know... but I just had zero patience and had to have it NOW! I felt like Veruca from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.
So all in total I paid about $469.xx, but even at that price if seems like a steal. Paid almost $700 for my GS5 which feels like junk compared to this bad boy.
It's too bad about the hardcore yellow band at the bottom of mine, I think I found the perfect phone. The battery life on this thing is R-E-D-I-C-U-L-O-U-S! I swear it doesn't want to die.
That sucks it was a used one. To make it worse I would be livid paying over retail for it too and having a yellow band.

Yeah at first I was going to return it but after hearing people had to pay $50+ to ship it back to China and no guarantees of getting back a perfect device, I decided against it.
I'm hoping my case is just an isolated incident, imagine the outrage if OnePlus was really putting customer's returns back in new sealed boxes and sending them out in order to meet demand?

They need to do a lot to gain respect. They are lucky people settle with the yellow screens. How can you say it's suppose to be like that? They can control the situation now and censor, deny rma, because of the invite system.
Imagine if the phone was released publicly. Stores would stop buying them because of returns and they would have a lot more people complaining than on the forums about a yellow screen.

No documentation, just phone, charger cable and sim card keychain in the box. Box was completely sealed with plastic outside, does not looked tampered with at all.

I got a new Z3, but after checking it's flaps and dunking it in water (as a demo to a friend who owns an iPhone!) it developed major issues such as the vibrator that didn't stop buzzing even when the phone was off, the phone at first wouldn't switch off and the gyroscope stopped working - after checking the water sensor I saw one had been triggered so the phone was leaking water at the flap.
It was exchanged for me as it was a week old.
Then the second phone wouldn't charge on the magnetic port so I called my phone company, as I was just out of the initial two week period they did not want to exchange it again and so the phone had to be sent to Sony.
8 days of forced technology detox later I got a new phone, because the phone was too new so they didn't have spare parts yet to fix it at SBE, which are Sony's official contractors.
I followed my repair through the website regularly and at one point it said fault: "no Bluetooth module" which isn't even the fault I sent it in for!
I've tried logging in, but I've received a new phone a week ago now so I can't log into my repair anymore and the documents don't list the fault, it only says 'replaced phone with reconditioned phone'.
Oh and now my new phone has no noticeable gap that is mentioned here, but it has ugly light bleed at the bottom left hand corner.
My Z1 also had to be sent in twice to Sony, once for a back that cracked spontaneously on a desk and once because the rubber flap covering the ports wore out after just 6 months and the door couldn't stay closed...
So it annoys me deeply when reviewers talk about Sony's amazing build quality. They use premium materials yes, but sadly the build quality is not premium.

Now does anyone of us here know how the official cover window of thebZ3 works? I suppose it works with the magnetic sensors just like in other phones (eg. S5, NEXUS 7 2013, and even the Tablet Z). Maybe someone of us here is able to point out of if this sensor has magnetic sensor or not.

I don't think this means that they initially had forgotten the Bluetooth.
Other than that: sorry to hear that you're having bad luck with your phones. There's hundred of millions of satisfied Sony customers, and some ten thousand unlucky and unhappy ones. I'm not affiliated with Sony, I just don't like generalizations.
The sad fact is that I'm a total, smitten Sony fanboy. I have always had Sony MP3 and minidisc players , since 2002 actually, when the iPod was just a baby, Sony cameras snd Sony TV's.
Back in the day it was because I preferred the SQ or the picture quality to what Apple or other manufacturers offered.
Now it's just because I love the brand, UI and and in all honesty the main draw for me is the Walkman app and Sony's EQ settings, which in my opinion are streets ahead of any other phone's. You can actually crank up the bass to 10 with zero distortion, if you should choose to.
So Sony has me by the short and curlies and that is why I feel that I speak with a sort of authority, from hard earned experience.
There are countless build issues with their phones. From backs that crack, to screens that crack - both spontaneously, the latter was picked up by the BBC's Watchdog programme, after many customers were angry at Sony 's denial of the problem.
We have misaligned screens, units that aren't waterproofed, flap doors that mysteriously disappear, speaker grilles that fall off (Z1) and unsightly light bleed among scores of issues being mentioned in these forums.
We have come a long way since Sony meant 'Made in Japan' a decade or two ago. It contrasted sharply with the 'Made in China' stamp that almost always denoted an inferior quality.
Times and technology have moved on and nowadays everything is made in China... and it shows.
So I'm not generalising when I'm saying that the build quality of the Z3 is not as premium as it should be. I've had countless problems and these forums tell the stories of many, many others.
It is just my opinion, but I don't feel that I'm generalising. I'm merely taking into account all the issues that I have had, other people are having and comparing that to the price and materials of the phone and then arriving at a situation where in too many cases, they just don't match up...

My Z3 is perfect in every way. No bleed, magic self-cracking glass, things falling off, whatever. You can pick a few examples from people posting here how have problems, or have read other people complaining, but it's more or less meaningless; this time next year there'll be 20,000,000 or whatever xperia z3s sold, and a few thousand with problems, just like every other mass produced product. We've just had a week of crap about baidu spyware from people who don't know what the **** they're talking about. Everyone's an expert these days, aren't they? "Made in Japan" used to mean "piece of crap", then they improved. Sure, most crap is made in china, but they're improving too - not everything made there is crap. After them it'll be somewhere else.
If you want a Z3, buy a Z3. You won't be disappointed. And if you manage to explain how glass just breaks by itself when it's close to a Z3, there's probably a physics prize in it for you somewhere, because glass is rather a stable, well understood substance, and I can't imagine how you'd engineer this to happen even if you wanted to, never mind if you'd strengthened it with Gorilla glass.
No offence, but you are in denial. Have a look at these forums, some guys had to open 6 boxes in the store to find a Z3 without gaps and light bleed!! Have a look at the gap thread.
You were lucky with your phone.

None taken, because i'm confident the facts are on my side.
You're missing the point. I'm not lucky - they're unlucky. If 99.9% of Z3s manufactured were faulty, then I'd be lucky to get a working one. You'd be crazy to assume that high a percentage of them are faulty, though, and nothing I've read suggests this is the case.
Assuming "some guy on the internet" actually had to open 6 boxes, it just suggests a localised bad batch. Google for "confirmation bias". Sure, it's annoying if it happens to you, but statistically it won't.
Guys this thread is not about you arguing the build quality. I MADE THIS THREAD TO DISCUSS THE MAGNETIC SENSOR. If you want to fight do it somewhere else. If we will be talking stuffs here and your complain then moderator please just close this thread.

[REVIEW] Sharp Aquos Crystal X (402SH)

There is very little talk of this device on Xda, other than some mentions here and there on the regular Crystal forums.
Also, I have not yet seen any english speaking people giving a review of it on Youtube (or anywhere else for that matter). So far it has just been hands-on at Sharp stands and such.
I therefore thought it might be of interest to some, that I share my experiences.
Now I know this smartphone is not gonna be widely adopted outside of Japan.
Not having cdma or the 800mhz(?) gsm band used in the U.S, it seems silly for anyone to import this back to the the states. Taking into account that you have to add on the cost of getting it sim unlocked, makes it pretty pricey for a high end device (with previous gen "flagship" hardware).

At the time of writing this, I have only had this device in my possession for two days.
Keep that in mind. I will therefore have problems with assessing battery life and similar things that need a bit more time to be accurately evaluated.
I guess the natural place to start would be:
Appearance
Biggest selling point is of course the edgeless 5.5 inch display.
I previously came from the the M8, before that, Z1.
I love htc's screens (Atleast since the HOX).
We all know the viewing angles of the Z1 (coming from the Z before that, I was stumped that they managed to fail twice on that front), but straight on it has the most natural looking colors of any smartphone I have ever had.
Let's say that the Z1 is at one end of the scale, M8 in the middle, and typical Samsung amoled screens at the other end. The Crystal X would imo fall between the Z1 and the M8, not so far off the htc. It looks the best of the three, and I'm sure that is just because there's more screen to look at
Under
Settings > wallpaper & display > Quality mode
you can choose color modes (Standard quality, Dynamic, Natural, Relax).
I have not had time to scrutinize the differences on a ton of photos and graphics just yet.
I have tried out Dynamic (which is default) and Natural a little. Relax looks absolutely crazy, and makes white and light colors get a sort beige tint.
@ 157 grams, the phone is right in my comfort zone.
Even though there is no metal body, it does not feel plasticky or anything like that.
The power button and the volume rocker are not wobbly, but stiff, and give off nice satisfying clicks.
Being edgeless makes it a bit thicker than the competition these days, but thanks to being rounded at the back, it doesn't feel fat at all (I have turned a little out of shape the last couple of years, maybe I'm projecting my insecurities:laugh
I am going to even out the pattern on the back piece and spray paint it.
Tactile wise I don't feel it being bad or good, but I am doing it for two reasons:
-I like a sleek finish more then patterns
-the camera actually protrudes just a tiny tiny bit. This will hopefully neutralize that "threat", and avoid it being a resting point for the phone.
Innards
I could toss up the numbers here, but that is one google away, so just do that.
Key things to note here would be non-removable battery, and micro sd slot.
The "direct wave receiver... thingy (hell let's just call it a tiny buttkicker) works very well.
I was a tad worried when I read the instructions.
It says something along the lines of "make sure your entire ear covers the glass, to block out surrounding noise and to achieve the best audio experience"
The reality is, you don't even have to be near the screen. I have to actually turn the volume down quite a bit so it don't act as a speakerphone. Not to say it's so loud it's bothersome, or that people will unintentionally eavesdrop 10 feet away though.
If you are out and about in the city, the background noise would even that out easily.
My point is here that my skepticism was merely unfounded.
On to the:
Interaction
I have been running lollipop on my M8 and Nexus 9 for a while now, and liking it I might add. So naturally I would like it to land on the Crystal X as well.
Root is however more important to me right now (this phone badly deserves it)
So we are left with 4.4.4.
It is pretty close to stock. The notification panel looks a bit different.
Weirdly enough, you can't get to the brightness slider unless you go into settings. The brightness tile in the dropdown only gives you four choices (min, med, max and auto).
Rom is snappy, but certain apps introduces micro lags when scrolling.
There are other small features, like swiping from one side to the other on the status bar to take a screenshot or open image viewer.
Many (me included) hate those times when you are looking at media in portrait, and things are askew. So you tilt it just enough to see aaand blammo! auto rotation kicks in.
Grip sensors avoid this from happening.
It's been a while since I've been dependent on the power button for turning the screen on/off (and never going back). The grip sensors are therefore something I think everyone would greet with open arms (or with a firm grip I should say).
Just pick it up, and you're off to the races.
The speaker on the back is fairly loud. Nothing extreme, but well within my expectations.
Camera is something I have yet to fully explore. Looks a little sony-ish (not bad).
Not the fastest shooter, but seems like it takes good pics. I will pit it against my other relevant devices tomorrow.
Will be interesting to see how it fares against the M8 in low light.
In pitch black where you really rely on your flash, I think the Aquos might struggle more, because quite frankly, the flash on this thing is lackluster. Which means it's not a great flashlight either.
The final act:
Conclusion
When you add all that up in a blender, I will gulp it down and ask for seconds.
There is the question of: Will this device ever receive root?
Looking at the Crystal forums, it doesn't reassure me all that much.
One can just hope. I might also consider anteing up a phone and/or cash as a root bounty at some point.
All in all, no big letdowns. My worries were quickly put to rest.
If I had the chance to go back, I would buy it one more time
I hope there are already other owners (or future ones) out there, who stumbles over this thread and can chime in. Maybe we can group together and create a wave.
I will try to take som better photo's of the phone outside in the daytime a little later tomorrow. Also as mentioned, a camera shootout.
So what have we learned today kids?
Don't put Sharp-ie in pooper!
I absolutely love mine as well. I have owned it for 3 days and have been very impressed. My only complaint is that I only get edge and would love to be able to get at least 3g connection. I think it really is one of the nicest phones I have owned and I have owned a lot. I wish we could add radio bands to make the 3g possible. I find the little differences in the software to be nothing more than a little annoying. I actually shut off the swipe to activate feature as I found it always activating when I slipped it into the sleeve.

EDGE is brutal. I feel for you there.
Hopefully within a short time frame I will be able to test it on LTE-A (4G+), since around these parts they are rolling it out right now to several of the biggest cities here (I live fairly close to the capital).
I was quite busy yesterday, so I have not yet had time to take more photos. Hopefully I will have time a little later today though.
Thanks TS for the review. U got it from benny? . Just got my set yesterday.. Loves it..

I don't think you can. Only seen a setting for changing the spacing.
I just force immersive mode to get rid of it.
I am happy to say that Lmt luncher is working great (V2.4)
This edgeless beauty can't be constrained by ugly black buttons
I use Go Launcher and that way it becomes transparent by default. I can also swipe up and it disappears completely. I can do the same for the notification bar as well.
correction, the 4 icons don't dissappear just the dock icons can.
install latest version of Apex ... thats it..

Yep, what Im saying is rubbish. I think even one of the default launchers do it.
Find something unusual during charging... I have this orico 4 (2ax2, 1ax2) ports charger that can output 1.1a to 2.0a to my other phones but for this 402sh only max 0.5a. Tried all kind of cables. Then using xiaomi 10400mah power bank can output 1A..

Mine has gone through three different chargers, and they charge much more than 500mah (Logitech 1A, HTC 1.5A, HTC 2A)
Have not even had time to roll back the Z1 and the M8 to stock yet.
Thinking of comparing the three in a couple of scenes in full resolution, 8Mpx, both with their respective cameras and the google camera.
Meanwhile, two quick "glam" shots:
Does anyone know the technical details of the phone?
Like aperture, and if it has ois?
@benziii , does it have the slow-motion (240fps) which is highlighted on the new zeta models ?
Thanks for reviewing this, any chance of a source link?
edit: I found the link; if anyone else want look, here: http://www.softbank.jp/corp/group/sbm/news/press/2014/20141212_01/
Battery life
Guys what is the battery life on the 402sh like? Also this is not hugely important but what is the colour of bezel on the black 402sh? Is it really black? Reason I am asking is Id like to get this in black but when I look at the pictures of the black version, the front still looks whitish to grayish rather than pure black. Can someone please confirm?
Awesome!
I really hoped this phone will get. root, but it seems we have failed to create a wave.
I have seen some websites that demand payments for rooting your device.
I'd like to know if they are reliable at all.
