CWM hangs in operations - Captivate General

A friend rooted his phone using the update.zip method and wanted to flash CM7. He tried several times and told me that it would just sit there. 15 minutes later, still nothing. So I told him to swing by and I would have a go. I tried flashing CM7 in CWM and same result. I thought maybe he had a faulty recovery so I tried reflashing in ROM Manager. I noticed two different options for the Captivate; Galaxy S Captivate and Captivate (MTD). I read the instructions on the CM7 thread here and it said to use MTD. He originally used the other one. So I tried to flash the MTD and it gave me an error. Something like this: "Rom manager has been set up to use your existing recovery installation." Nothing happens after that. I try to flash in recovery again and nothing. Then he informs me that he hasn't done a full wipe yet. So I back up his apps, boot into CWM recovery and perform a wipe. The wipe hangs...same as flashing.
So back to stock with Heimdall I go so I can start from scratch and know that anything that is wrong is not due to something he did before and forgot about or anything like that. Clean slate, so to speak. That went well, no problems. Re-rooted, flashed CWM recovery for Captivate (MTD) rebooted into CWM recovery and all operations still hang. What am I missing here? If there is some piece of vital info I am not giving out here, just ask and I'll get right back and answer.
I appreciate any help I can get. And Just FYI, I do not currently have the device with me but I am relaying this thread to my friend who does so he can stop by and answer questions that I can't and try things out himself.
Thanks in advance.

This sounds like one of those "my friend at school has this problem" stories you tell your dad.

Does it really matter whose phone it actually is? The problem still remains regardless. And yes it is a friend's phone. I'm not sure why you think I would lie about this on an anonymous forum. And if you look at my posts, they are pretty much all in the Thunderbolt and OG Droid forums. I'm simply trying to help a friend out and this thread was a bit of last resort. I guess I should have learned back when I had problems with my wife's phone and posted a help thread on XDA. I got no real help. Just a few people telling me that they never had a problem like mine. I re-posted the same thing in the android central forums and within 20 minutes got real responses and finally someone walked me through fixing the problem one-on-one through G-Talk. If these are the type of responses I get, I'll just repost this there and really get help.
I really do like this forum and a lot of great development happens here but if someone needs help and all members do is take shots at people, chastise them, or flood a thread with frivolous posts, maybe forum admins should consider ridding the site of general help sub-forums.

I am glad you found your issue which could have been solved by reading threads. Oh and XDA doesn't have a general help section. We have General for device news and info. Q&A for questions, Android devoloment for devlopment, accessories for cool phone gear and themes and apps for themes and apps. XDA is not about spoon feeding info to new members. We expect you to put in a good effort to find the info you need. While I understand it can be ruff with all the info around.

[REF] New to XDA? Questions about flashing ROMs? Please read this before posting!

Lately I have seen so many "what rom is best for my first flash" or "Help me decide what rom is best for me" threads and they are POINTLESS! Granted there are an abundance of new and old custom roms, everyone has different experiences and opinions on what rom is best.
So... NOOBS:
If you want to know what rom is best for YOU do the following:
- Go to the Android Development Section and read through different [ROM] threads to see what features will work best for you. I have also found it useful to read through the last couple of pages to see what other users think about the current version of the rom.
- If you don't know what certain terms in the rom thread mean or affect (ie. kernel, modem, OC/UV, Gps tweaks) locate the search bar in the top right corner of the page or browse through this page
- Once you have decided what rom you want to try out, you need to learn how to flash the rom. Most of the Developers post instructions but they can be confusing to some of the less experienced flashers. nbs11 has posted a thread about how to do this here and Connexion2005 was nice enough to make videos of the general steps: Flashing back to stock using odin3 , 3 Part video series for flashing roms: video 1 , video 2 , video 3
- Now that you know how to choose and flash a rom just try out different roms until you find one that you like and gives you all the features you are looking for.
- If you find the theme of a certain rom ugly or obnoxious, head over to the Captivate themes and apps section and look through different [THEME] threads until you find one that you like. Make sure the theme is compatible with the rom you have just flashed or are planning to flash.
- If you accidentally brick your phone, read How to unbrick the captivate or if that doesn't work, Unbrick the captivate for only $0.99
-Some useful links other members have posted:
One-Click Root - root your captivate in one click!
Build #1010 or above flash back to stock
My hopes of this thread are to save the Captivate general section from becoming a section full of useless threads. So if you are new, please use these steps and do the research to find a Rom that is right for YOU!
Cheers,
Alex

Eh....Ii think a lot of us are guilty of expecting too much from "noobs." I remember being new and told to scour hundreds of pages of indecipherable text. Yeah right. I just want to flash my phone! Obviously not everyone does it. I hate to say it, but the forums are not very noob friendly. I recently tried suggesting an idea about organization of themes.....but no one even replied to my idea. Last I checked (correct me if I'm wrong) but the wiki is just a link to the sub forums. Someone tried to organize Rom features....but I don't think it hasn't been updated in a while. But I haven't checked
I would still like to create an easy to browse page full of apk's. Maybe I can find some time and a place to upload.....

Sure we might expect too much, but I think we should at least give them some guidance to flashing new roms. Since there is so much information out there it can be quite overwhelming to newcomers, which is why I tried to summarize and compile the best information I know of here.
I think your ideas of compiling themes into a one stop shop would be awesome if you kept it updated. I personally would just start a new thread and divide it into the most popular Roms out at the time, and paste links to whichever ones worked for that rom under the heading.
Gave you a 'thanks' and, AMEN!
Stickied, thanks for your contribution
very good useful information

To be honest, I have never flashed cog so I am not sure. But here is what I ALWAYS do, and everything works out for the different roms i have flashed.
1. Backup Apps and App data with TiBackup (not system data!!!)
2. Put phone in download mode
3. Open odin3 on computer
4. Plug phone in to computer, wait for odin to say "added"
5. Press start and wait to see if a blue line starts to apear on the phone
6. If the blue line appears wait for odin to finish, if it does not unplug the phone and hope it has not bricked. See the bottom of the OP if your phone is bricked.
7. Once rebooted, use one click root to root phone
8. Open droid explorer and move the CWM update.zip (see attachment to this post) to your phone as well as the rom you are flashing
9. Boot into recovery and "reinstall packages" usually twice until you get into CWM recovery
10. navigate to install zip from sd > choose zip from sd > (rom zip) > yes
11. once done click go back > reboot phone
12. If it asks you to convert data and partition click the first choice, something like convert all data and files, wait for it to finish
13. enjoi!
*NOTE* this assumes you have the correct drivers installed on your computer and that you have tested to make sure they work. I am not responsible if you follow these instructions and fubar your phone.

It is what it is
I'm a bit torn by the thread topic, but I do understand. What lead me to this thread was the realization that I was prohibited from submitting a post on the Android Dev forum. It would have been my first post, as I had been testing and writing down the results of my experiences with flashing ROMs that are currently offered. After doing some reading, I found that a minimum of 9 posts were required before posting priviledges available for the dev forum. A little disappointed, but I could deal with that...until I read the opening of this thread. On one hand, I understand that every post has its place and in order for a forum to run smoothly, respect and etiquette is paramount. However, the tone of the post had a kinda, "don't interfere in grown folk business" feel to it; a noob-tolerance, but "stay in your place-ness" IMHO. We were all noobs at some point. Perhaps it's a little easier for some to remember than others. Like I said, I understand. Both sides (Moderators and noobs) have to put themselves in each others shoes to make it work.

This thread is not discouraging noobs from posting or being a part of the forum, in fact following the guide will do the opposite by getting them involved in rom discussions with other members.
I am encouraging noobs to try things for themselves instead of relying on what other people claim to be the "best rom" for them. This was not meant to be an "elitist thread" simply because I haven't even been here that long, just trying to de-clutter the captivate general forum.
I have to throw a wrench into this system.....sorry....there seems to be a lot of complaints about posts in the wrong area. This happens A LOT. I have to take the"noob" side for a minute. Maybe instead of everyone jumping on new members, we find a better way to organize the information. Searching sucks, admit it. I know what I am looking for so I should be able to drill down through the forums to find it. I tried searching for a specific email.apk and gave up after 10 minutes of flipping through posts. There are all walks of people in the development forums. After all, that is where the good stuff is kept. So of course questions are going to be raised there. You are never going to win the war against new members not knowing the culture of this forum. Instead, let's start getting some ideas together on how we can make it more user friendly for everyone.

Ok so I have to ask, did you even read this thread?
The sole purpose of this thread was to guide new users to flashing new roms, that way they would stop making new threads in the captivate general section asking other users which rom is best.
No where did I mention anything about the development section or new members posting in the wrong section.
If you can't find things with search then try altering your search methods, ie change the "sort results by" drop down box to Relevancy. Often times I just do a google search of "xda (whatever i am looking for)" without the quotes and find what I am looking for in a matter of seconds or minutes.
If you feel like the forum is unorganized, do something about it like I did, don't just sit on your ass. Start a thread with all of the relevant .apk's you think need to be compiled while allowing other users to contribute or don't complain.
I did, but it sounds like many threads I've read in the past over and over again. I could have swore I've read this topic several times here, but perhaps I am mistaken. I follow several forums here at XDA and it is extremely possible my frustrations lie from reading this topic in multiple locations, not just within the Captivate section.
After searching around, I realize that there are not as many threads like this within the Captivate section as I had thought. My apologies for coming off wrong; however,
I do feel like some of the repositories here are disorganized, and have even tried mentioning it, but my thread got absolutely NO response, and it was in what I thought would be the correct section (asking about a list of apks in the Themes and Apps Section). Ah, oh well. Guess my fuse has been a little short recently. I wish I had more free time than just the 15 minutes here and there. I REALLY want to work on sorting the WiKi, but I'm married, so I've ALWAYS got other things to do.
Now that I feel I've completely torn the thread off topic, I'm going back to work

Thanks for the response. Didn't mean to be overly critical of the thread. Simply wanted to express how both sides of the argument can be seen as valid and relevant. I've seen harsh criticisms from seasoned contributors as well as inconsiderate inquiries from new posters that indicate no effort to find an answer prior to posting. No offense intented and thanks for your contribution to the community.
Maybe you can change the thread topic to sound a little less hostile towards new members. New xda users read this first or New posters or anything but "n00bs"

Edited title.

Some advice for n00bs from a n00b

Ok, so I have been using the EA11 leak for roughly one week, but have been reading for two. I wanted to write something for other new peeps to read as a "guide" if you will, to point them in the right direction and maybe answer some of those first questions. Let me make this clear right away, I AM A N00B, period. I am absolutely sure that there will be parts of this that will need corrected so please read everything. That's actually a great place to start. READ EVERYTHING.
1. Read Everything.
When I say two weeks, I mean that from the time I started reading. And reading, and reading, and...well you get it. Take every opportunity to research what it is your going to do. I read every single article I could on the Mesmerize. When a term came up I didn't recognize I went to google search. Once I learned the term I went back and READ IT ALL AGAIN. Familiarizing yourself with these forums is an invaluable tool. I also recommend downloading the XDA app, its a must have.
2. I have all these files now what?
I tried my best to get organized and put all my files in one location only to find out that my MacBook is worthless on the rooting process. I am no programmer and using Terminal scares the hell out of me. So once I got organized on a windows PC I started by reading very carefully and following the directions. I can honestly say they are concise and to the point. I must have read them 3 dozen times before starting up Odin and holding my breath.
3. I have a couple of dumb questions.
NO YOU DON'T. For the most part people around here are polite, helpful, and willing to answer most any questions. This is the process I personally go through. I first read every page of the thread that pertains to what I'm doing. Most of the time your answer is there. If no answer can be found/understood, I go to the web chat room link usually located under a senior poster. I believe it is #samsung-mesmerize. There are usually people there that can answer your questions right away. The next place to go is a PM. But please remember these people have lives and are doing all of this in their free time. FREE time. So be polite, and be patient. If all else fails then I would post a thread in the General Forum for the Mesmerize, although I have never had to do this. The odds are you won't either.
4. I have some complicated questions.
Read the above paragraph
5. I did it! Now what?
Go to the development forum, find who is responsible for your success and buy them a beer! No this is not required nor a command. I just feel personally, that these guys work pretty tirelessly and deserve it. But, I can promise that a simple thank you will go a long way.
I am running EA11, red cwm, voodoo lagfix, SGS tools new TW launcher. My battery life is better than before on stock and since using SGS tools its much faster as well. I apologize if for any reason this post seems un-necessary or if I ranted. Feel free to ask any questions or leave comments. Remember...be nice, these guys work hard.
Now running as of Sun Feb 27, 2011

[Q] Can Someone Confirm My Phones Back To Stock To Be Returned

I am asking all please don't attack me for posting this as I am but I am desperate....
Hi, I wanted to ask after installing the Stock UVKD1 – Flashable T959VuVKD1zip file will T-Mobile be able to tell I was rooted at one time? What happened is.. I was rooted and after flashing this I wasn't. Not accusing anyone, actually glad because it gave me a reason to return the phone. This purchase wasn't planned but because I own the Vibrant 3g (1st one phone) and love it, love the themes, everything about it. So at T-Mobile store saw 4g and bought it. Nothing like the Vibrant.
The ones that have contributed to this site have been amazing!!! It's too bad that there are so many with just gripes and complaints. Over at the Vibrant sites everyone works together and it's fun. Not a developer, have had many soft bricks but have fun with my phone and enjoy learning.
This is long because I have seen so many attack others and hope people won't waste their time on me because I am returning the phone and haven't posted anything before this anticipating someone would jump on me about where I posted or the answer is elsewhere "go to that forum".
The fact is that everything I have looked at and I have looked everywhere people are having problems and everyone's is a little different than mine so I just want to know if with this rom on my phone can I return it to T-Mobile, to day is the 19th day and I only have 20.
Thanks in advance for any answer someone can provide me with.
im not sure but I don't think you can get D1 over the air right now. however, that doesn't mean you rooted the phone, just that you flashed it. I suspect they might feel the same way about that though. If I was you I would flash from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=978836 and then remove root as explained in that forum.
Please feel free to thank this post if this helped.

I don't think you read my post completely. I know I am not rooted. I do have some knowledge about what to do or I wouldn't be messing with a phone, this was going to be my main phone and I kept my Vibrant to play with and learn.
I was only asking about the rom because I didn't know what rom was on the phone when purchased.

Well since this KD1 Rom is a t-mobile update, I don't think you'll have any issues returning it. I would unroot the phone though (if is rooted). I'm not an expert; I'm like on the same boat as you are which is learning all this great stuff, but would t-mobile be able to tell if you were rooted once? not really sure.

What problems were you having with it anyhow?
It sounds like you must have been trying to make modifications to it that are either untested or not designed to work properly with the SGS4G.
I know alot of people call it the Vibrant 4G but it's not the same, there are alot of differences with it, so it's easy for someone with less experience to mess it up. Not saying you don't have experience, but it sounds like you breeze through phones quicker than the flick of a light switch.

I thought you might have helped being that it was your thread i got the rom from and I asked the question there, sent you a pm but this is the last day to return (typing while files are moving from one sd to the other). Wrong again, you seemed to be one of the ones actually developing something for this phone and not wasting time to criticize people. Glad to be returning the phone and returning to the Vibrant forum.
People should do what I'm about to before buying a phone they want to mess with and that is check out these forums what's going with the development and if there are an overwhelming amount of negativity. And I know that's what some of you did, just thought I'd save someone the time of posting it.
Once again I am learning as I'm sure some others out there are too.

I have 2 phones the one I am exchanging (returning) the Sam T959V Galaxy S 4 and the Sam T959 Vibrant. That's at least how it's printed on the boxes.
I have not done anything from the Vibrant forum on the Galaxy S 4g phone. I flashed the rom from the thread you posted and went from root to no root. All SU apps wouldn't even open because what was needed wasn't in the needed directory(s).
All's good. Thanks.

It honestly doesn't have much to do with negativity.
More so with forum etiquette. I'm not trying to be rude to you, I merely telling you, no matter how much you post "Don't flame me" "don't be negative"...
If you post in the wrong forum anywhere on XDA, you're gonna get a negative response. That's a given not specific to this section.
I didn't see your post over there, until just now. Again cross posting is a no no, I understand you needed and answer. The best place for that would have been the general forum. not the development forum. It clearly says General Q&A section.
You can return the phone, I love my SGS4G and it works great. It seems like your mixing the two issues. Other than a few people on here, the majority get along just fine with no issues.

All's good. Thanks.

"I won't repeat what I already posted but have gone though over 103 phones (unfortunately, kids) in one year about 90% smart phones."
So if you have gone through 103 phones in one year, than either you're extremely picky, or you just like new phones.
Either way I don't fault you, but don't bag on this forum because you don't know the right section to post in, and you haven't even posted for help regarding the "issues" with your SGS4G.

Didn't have a problem with the cards and don't have a problem with the phone either so I didn't go over to the threads you posted. I have the sd card that came with the phone and the 32 as well as a 16 for the T959. Use my computer a lot to transfer files and have multiple directories to keep it all separate. No problem there.
If I hadn't bought it after the T959 I am sure I would be keeping it as you are. The amount of development here on XDA is great and I didn't realize that the 2nd memory card (the internal on the T959) that is used like a 2nd sd card but at the same time like the internal memory on all the other phones was removed on the SGS4G. Became spoiled with that as well as the builds on the T959 for themes, mods, roms, etc. Don't mean to insult anyone so please don't take it that way.
You've answered all my questions, thank you and I will contact the correct person letting them know question answered, posted in wrong forum (and multiple times, won't forget that) so this thread can be removed or however they handle the errors (or maybe I'm the first).

Yeah I hear you. I came from a G1 so it was an upgrade. Not much of an upgrade for a vibrant user.
The threads I posted were actually quotes from posts that you had posted on other forums indicating you had issues, but not in the SGS4G forums, in the vibrant forums.
Glad you have no issues with it. No harm done, just to avoid this always check which forum your posting in and try to avoid cross posting.

T-Mobile customer service and I called the store, but I have been so side tracked I didn't even there. Tomorrow is my 20th day technically and just noticed I had a lock screen on it the phone I need to get off so maybe I'll just keep this too and try and make some changes to it to make it fun.
Customer service has been wrong before, but I have always worked things out with them. Been with them since 2000 and am down to 5 lines from 7 and a data line so they have been pretty good but then again I guess policy is policy. Then again I do know that customer service (return by mail) was up to 30 days and the store was way shorter. I am surprised it was 20.
Yeah.. tenure does mean something with the company.. one of the great things a out tmo

[Q] Safe to update if I'm rooted?

I'm on rooted stock firmware. I've been postponing the recent update but this morning the postpone icon finally grayed out. I made it disappear by hiring the back button, but is it safe fire me to apply the update on rooted stock? If it's important, I also deleted the original clock app in an attempt to install the stock android one.
Also, is there a step by step method for backing up my room in case something goes wrong? Directions on topics I find here tend to be a little to general for me.

Questions go in the general forum, there is a thread on the update there that explains your question already
Use nandroid backup in the recovery menu for your backups
ok thanks, but how do i use the rocovery menu and nandroid? I dontthink I have them installed, unless superoneclick automatically does so.

Why do you sidekick n00bs constantly spam the dev forum? If you have no idea how to use nandroid (which isn't an app btw.) Or get into recovery, you have no business rooting your phone in the first place. Its people like you who have ruined the sidekick forum. Even the mods don't want anything to do with it.

Its people like me (normal, average people)that direct traffic to this website and give these communities some recognition, and encourage handset makers to release phones which aren't heavily locked, allowing people to see the value of open source. Its people like you, who harass average people simply for being average people, that make these boards more difficult to use and dense for the average person. Has it occured to you that if there were a step by step guide on this board explaining what recovery and nandroid is, where to find them, and how to use them, that people like me wouldn't be "spamming" the boards with questions? By the way, every time people post angry comments like yours, complaining about a question being asked instead of answering it,it delays a solution and bumps the topic, making it more prominent on the board and encouraging the questioner to keep posting.
In short, start solving problems or get out of the way.

If thats is directed to me then wow. Idk about most of that stuff you just said. There are step by step guides for everything you just mentioned. But anyways the only reason people get frustrated is cause the same questions get asked in the wrong place.. Over and over. Most people here dont mind answering and helping people . If you took the time to google any of that stuff you just mentioned you wouldn't have to worry about people getting annoyed by seeing another thread for a question in the development section. I'm very kind and will help anyone who needs it that asks in a decent manner. If you had just went into a thread of mine or another existing one and asked this question instead of making an entire new thread for it trust me it would have been answered with no problem, wether someone else answered the questions or myself

But in order to do a backup yu need to have CWM. There is a thread for it here in the development section. Once you follow those instructions and install cwm you can do a nandroid backup from there. Just go into recovery go to backup/restore then select backup and it will backup your rom to your sd card.

not taking sides, but falkner is right. doing a search on this forum gives such poor results, if is searched 'how to make a nandroid backup' i would get a bunch of threads that poorly describes how to execute said topic, Especially for someone that has no idea what it is.
its never anyones fault when questions like these come up, but it would be Extremely helpful for the sk4g community if someone made up a more elaborate 'bible' that explains how to do everything even if you've never held an android phone before.
sidenote: i dont understand what the big deal is, its not like the sidekick forums are overflooding with new threads these days...
something to think about: if you're teaching someone how to drive a car and they have no idea how to turn on the headlights, do you bash them and yell at them for trying to drive a car? (poor metaphor, but same concept SHOULD apply here)

No, there is nothing wrong with questions. What IS annoying to the overall community is that half of the dimwits can't read through threads, Google search, or at the very least, post the question in the general thread, rather than the development thread.
I'm sorry, but honestly, there is so much info about rooting etc. I taught myself everything by doing research. If you can't find it, then you aren't looking hard enough.

Bricked Device HELP Pleeasssee.... OP7P

Hello Everybody, I'm new to this specific site so I apologize in advance if I posted this in the wrong forum section. I have a OP7P that I was running BlissRom. Today I decided to check out the EX kernel app. After installing. There was a pop-up that said "There is an Kernel update would you like to update mow, so I accepted and it asked me to reboot, like always after a system flash. And it's boots into Fastboot. I tried everything from Selecting Start to selecting recovery. To holding Vol and power buttons and Fastboot is where it goes no matter what. So I said at least it's in Fastboot. I'll just reflash the TWRP img file. Then. I noticed I was in trouble when my PC didn't detect the device at all. I plugged another device into the cable to make sure the cable was good and it was. So I ran Fastboot devices command and No devices detected rebooted it back into Fastboot. Tried it again and same thing. Someone please tell me I'm not totally screwed. I've bricked phones on a few occasions and always have gotten them back. This is my personal device. Fingers crossed my kids didn't just get a new frisby. Thanks everyone in advance!

Kind of ignorant to be calling people idiots when they follow the same process theybalways have to update their ROM and things go south. Not every method works for the same device.
If you're not going to help, don't comment.

Never called anybody idiot brother and if you are older than twelve you should be familiar with the terminology and context of which I used idiot proof. Rather than giving answers that can be easily found why not promote the use of the search function? If we continue to just give answers these forums will continue to be full of meaningless space keeping threads like this one that only point you to another thread while the useful information gets pushed out.
There's a reason we didn't make all A's from teachers giving us all the answers or you don't just tell you're kids to listen to you count to 100 or sing the ABCs and it's because we wouldn't learn jack ish. Your reply was less helpful than mine. I stated that the threads were available hoping the OP attempts to use the search feature to find them. You just made the most useful tool (SEARCH) obsolete.

Lol I'm just frustrated to not be able to help . I check the questions and answers regularly to see if I can assist someone but the questions and answers forum is only filled with "Bricked" threads of which non are unique to anything posted in the Mega Unbrick and MSM Tool thread. I've had about every Bricked situation possible for this device and never once had to create a thread or even ask a question in a thread because I know the power of search. This device will always Unbrick as long the mother board isn't fried.

True. Nah, I'm just coming from OP's point of view. I've rooted my tablet and other phones and have never come close to bricking a device besides this one. I got all the way down to the Qualcomm crash dump message. I was so frustrated. All I did was literally download an update ROM build and applied it the exact same way I had the previous build, but something messed up along the way. I tried different methods til I finally found that All-in-One tool. I tried all the others and they didn't work for me.
Anyway, my bad for being rude. I know I'm not dealing with the typical YouTube type of people here
