failed to mount /sdcard (no such file or directory) - Xoom Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Motorola XOOM 3G. I am trying to upgrade to 3.1. Currently on 3.0.1

I am trying to flash a ROM from my external micro sdcard. I getting an error E:\failed to mount /sdcard (no such file or directory) inside Android system recovery <3e> when I choose a package to install. Please help!!!

Reformat your sd card especially if it is partitioned

I did that many times. Even did it with another android phone. Also used other sdcard from my android phone.

I'm having this problem too.
Any ideas?

Please take a look at this thread. I'm not trying to boost myself but keep you guys from having problems. I don't know if this is your problem (bad recovery from CWM) but it's been happening to a lot of smart people.

"E:failed to mount /sdcard (No such file or directory)"
I have been trying to flash the 3.2.2 ROM on my Verizon branded 4g+WiFi Xoom and I am receiving the same message when I choose apply zip from USB:
E:failed to mount /sdcard (No such file or directory)
I have tried three different microSD cards, 512MB, 16GB class 4, and 32GB class10. I get the same message no matter what card is tried. It does not seem to be able to see its own internal storage or the external microSD card.
I was following the steps and another odd thing is that I do not have the options to perform and Nandroid backup. I have the purchased version of ROM Manager but I need root access to be able to install ClockworkMod... Since my tablet is already at 3.2.2 all I really needed was root anyway so I can run Cisco Anyconnect VPN that required root.
Any tips on getting the Xoom to see or mount the SD card, either one, would be appreciated.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Step 1: Getting Ready to Flash Rooted Honeycomb in Xoom
1. Download the ROM Android-HC-3.2.2-Stock+Rooted-1.1-SOLARNZ.zip and save the file on your desktop.
2. Once done, connect your tab to the computer, mount SD Card or SD Ext and copy the downloaded Zip file to SD Card root. .
Step 2: Put Motorola Xoom in Recovery Mode
First you need to reboot Motorola Xoom in Recovery Mode, after that you can perform a factory reset on Xoom. Follow the steps below:
1. Turn your device on, then switch it back on
2. On startup when Motorola logo appears, press and hold Volume Down button
3. When Android recovery text appears, press the Volume Up button. Your device will now enter in recovery mode.
Note: In recovery mode, you can navigate up and down using Volume Up and Volume Down keys while Power button can be used to select an option.
Step 3: Take Nandroid Backup
1. Once in recovery mode, press & hold Power button.
2. While holding the Power button, press & release the Volume Up button.
3. Navigate to “backup and restore” and select it.
4. Select “backup” to perform your data backup.
Step 4: Factory Reset Motorola Xoom
1. Once Nandroid backup is complete, navigate to Wipe data / factory reset, then press Power button to select it.
2. It will ask for confirmation, select Yes, delete all user data option to factory reset Xoom.
Step 5: Flash Rooted Honeycomb 3.2.2 ROM
1. Select Flash Zip from SD Card
2. Then select choose zip from sd card
3. Select the zip file that you put onto the root of SD card.
4. Wait for process to complete.
And there you go! You are now on the latest Android Honeycomb version and are all set to explore what’s new. In case you are facing any issues or just want to thank the ROM chef. Do let us know in the comments section just in case if you face any issues while updating your device in the comments section as just in case if you face any issues then we will try to solve them at the earliest.

I suspect that you updated your recovery via ROM Manager to a version that doesn't recognize the external sdcard. You need to flash the solarnz R4C cwm
recovery v 3.2.0.0. Rom Manager is a pain.
Also please don't flash that 3.2.2 ROM. It will break your connectivity. If you have 4G, you can flash the Odachi kernel.

Had a problem similar to yours. Make sure you have your sdcard mounted completely in it's slot. Make sure you turn the xoom off when mounting.

4g xoom root failed
ok i attempted the 5 steps but i dont get an option for a backup nor an option to install zip file, the closest is 'apply update from usb drive' then i get the E:/failed to mount /sdcard (no such file or directory). card is mounted correctly. i bypassed the backup and just did the rest, same issue. should i keep it plugged into pc while doing all this, i plug in to copy zip file then unplug it.

Assuming that you have the correct recovery version installed (see my previous post), you should keep the sdcard mounted in your Xoom. Make sure it is actually mounted. A reboot with the card seated in its slot will usually do it.
You could at least read over this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1249798
and check the steps listed against what you have done. That often helps.

exactly what i needed detailed instructions for dummies. hopefully i will be succesful this time, taking a break for a day this stuff is for programmers, lol.

I encountered the same issue.
It appears the XOOM does not like SD Cards that were formatted using Windows
(or perhaps Quick Formatted using Windows).
Using a 4GB FlashDrive formatted as Fat32 using Linux (i.e. Linux Mint 17.3 Cinnamon 64 bit boot CD)
resolved the issue.

[Q] a problem: can't mount sd card

Hi guys,
I try unsuccessfully to install rom CM7 on my Motorola Defy.
I rooted the phone and used SndInitDefy 1.4.2 to install the CWM recovery version 2.5.1.8.
On the CWM recovery, when I choose "install zip from sd card" and then "choose zip from sd card", i get this message:
Code:
e: can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p1 (or /dev/clock/mmcnlk0)
not such file or directory
e: can't mount /sdcard
I tried it with 2 different sd cards. Of course the computer and the phone (when its on) recognize the cards as well.
What am I doin wrong?
thanks for your help.
evy
A new problem:so I burn with rsd a new firmware: this.
I successfully mount the sd card and install the cm7 rom.
When I rebooted my phone, I had the cm7 welcome screen and...that's all. I only have the welcome screen with the circle and the rotating arrow. it stuck. I can't turn off the phone or enter again to recovery, even when I take off the battery and turn on again.
Please, what could I do to fix it?

[Q] Clockworkmod does not apply update.zip

Hello everybody!
I'm stuck in a problem I can not solve. I have Toshiba Folio 100 with Rom Cyanogenmode 7.1.
I'm not satisfied, and I would like to return to Foliomod 1.4. But when I enter recovery mode, and i try to flash Foliomod with file update.zip on a SD-card, I receive the following message:
E: Can't open /sdcard/update.zip
(No such file or directory)
If I try the option "Install zip from sdcard" and then "Choose zip from sdcard" in the folder "sdcard-disk0/" I cannot find file update.zip.
So I'm stuck, and there is no way to flash a different Rom. Any idea!? Thanks to all those who can help me!
Davide
Make sure you put the Update.zip on the internal SD Card of your phone. Not the external add in SD card you provided. It is a good idea to remove your external SD card during these type of operations. To protect any data you have on the external SD card.
Maybe the file “update.zip” has been damaged
It's a mess!!!!
My Folio 100 is bricked. When I start, I see the screen "touch the Android to begin" and there is no way to continue. I already tried to make factory reset, but nothing happens. It returns the screen "touch the android to begin" and nothing happens.
I can't flash any other rom, because it does not read the SD Card. What can I do?

[Q] Noob Guides

[tl;dr: Need a walkthrough from stock to custom ROM written for dumbasses.]
Is there any way we could get some noob-friendly guides to getting from a stock phone state to a custom ROM? For some of us, this is our first Android phone, and most of you are veterans. I've tried to follow the instructions you've posted, but I just cannot get CWM to flash properly. I've ODIN'd three times now. So would anyone mind writing a guide in a way that, like, your grandma could understand? Maybe then I'd have a shot at a custom ROM.
Kuzar: Try the script I wrote here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=15395681&postcount=19
It's fairly simple:
-plug in your phone to your computer via USB
-enable adb debugging in Settings> Applications> Development > Enable USB Debugging (on your phone)
-Double click on the run.bat (from your computer)
I believe this is all you need. This should install clockwork, at which point you can follow instructions in any rom thread to install their rom. let me know if it doesn't work, or if you need any more assistance.
download:
http://www.krylon360.com/file_host/sk4g/recovery.zip (This is the recovery.)
http://www.krylon360.com/file_host/sk4g/update.zip (this is the update)
http://www.4shared.com/get/HpENkmN8/...rer_v2124.html (this is root explorer.)
open the first file on your computer and take out the recovery file inside it and place it on the sd card.
place the second file on the sd card
and install the last file.
now open root explorer scroll down and find sdcard,
now open it and find recovery and long press on it. hit copy. now hit the back button once.
now find system. open it.
find bin. open it.
hit on the top mount r/w
hit paste and overwrite the file.
next, power down the device and instead of powering on regularly, press volume down+ power button you should be in the recovery mode.
if it is blue then hit install packages,
if it is red you should be good to go.
NOW YOU HAVE A CWM
make a back up!
- Wipe Data/Factory Reset
- Wipe Cache Partition
*Now before you Flash, Only if this is your FIRST time Flashing a Custom ROM otherwise ignore the mounts/unmount part*
MAKE SURE YOUR MOUNTS LOOK LIKE THIS: (Go to mounts and storage from CWM recovery)
UNMOUNT CACHE
MOUNT DATA
MOUNT SDCARD
UNMOUNT SYSTEM
- Now its safe to Flash the .zip
after you flash, go back to mounts and storage (before rebooting, AGAIN IGNORE if this isnt your First time) and make sure your mounts look like this:
UNMOUNT CACHE
MOUNT DATA
UNMOUNT SDCARD
UNMOUNT SYSTEM
Reboot *this should take 3-5 minutes*(if it is your first time you should hear a voice talking from the phone dont worry its normal)

[Q] My LG Optimus V is Stuck in Clockwork Recovery

First of all, my Lg Optimus V is rooted with the Stock Virgin Mobile Rom.
Earlier I had done a factory reset on my lg optimus v. I started then it went to the clockwork recovery screen. I did not have a backup because I just wanted it to go to the stock rom like when you first get the phone. I have tried installing the aosp rom and the stock virgin mobile rom. After I have installed the rom, i rebooted the phone. It turned on then went back the the clockwork recovery screen.
I later looked around the internet looking for solutions but could not find anything. I noticed while I was looking that it said not to factory reset a rooted phone. That was my bad. I am hoping that there is a solution to this problem.
Thanks for the help!
i hope this will help you a bit
Nandroid Instructions:
1) Extract the "BCDS-20110203-0357" file into the "nandroid" folder, under the "mem=477M" subfolder.
1a) For Clockwork Recovery, place the "BCDS-20110203-0357" file in /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup
2) Boot into recovery
3) Go into the "Backup/Restore" menu, and select "Nand Restore"
4) Allow it to restore
5) Reboot! System should be stock
6) Go below and flash stock recovery
Recovery Instructions:
1) Download flash_image and the stock recovery and nandroid back up
2) Extract stock recovery.img and flash_image to the root of your sdcard
3) Open up an adb shell, or terminal emulator on your phone
4) Enter the following codes:
su
mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock5 /system
cat /sdcard/flash_image > /system/bin/flash_image
chmod 755 /system/bin/flash_image
mount -o remount,ro -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock5
flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img
reboot recovery

Nondroid Instructions
Ok, I went by those instructions, and When I the backup it said the the android_secure was not found and the sd-ext.img was not found. Then I rebooted the phone and I was still at the clockwork recovery screen.
ok then try this
If you're reading this then you probably did a factory reset from the privacy menu, so now you want to fix your phone. Well if you reset from the privacy menu most likely you will be booted into the recovery menu (you need to be able to get into this menu to fix your phone), but you cannot escape it even after flashing a new rom. So in order to fix your phone you need to do the following:
Go her forums.androidcentral.com/lg-optimus-s-rooting-roms-hacks/59359-custom-recovery-xionia-clockwork-cwma-v1-2518-6-a.html (Xionia_cwma_recovery.zip_v1.2518.6) and put that file onto the root of your sd card. You can either plug your phone into a PC and use the recovery menu option in the mounts and storage option (select mount USB storage), or to access your phone's SD card from the computer, power off by pulling the battery, then take out the sd card and put it into your computer.
After transfer: select unmount USB storage if using the option in the recovery, or put uSD card back into the phone and hold home + volume down, then the power button (all at the same time until you see the LG logo)
Then you go into the recovery's main menu and choose install zip from sd card, then select zip from sd card. After flashing the Xionia recovery.zip hit the back button to get back to the main menu. Go to the Advanced section and select 'reboot recovery" You should now boot into xionia recovery. Go to the Advanced section and select "fix recovery boot loop". Go back to the main menu flash ROM (and Gapps if needed). Reboot into your new ROM and tada you are unbricked .
To get back to stock ROM and everything go here: forum.androidcentral.com/virgin-mobile-optimus-v/58106-how-return-your-phone-stock-mostly.html (stock rom)
The download is an .img file. How am I supposed to flash it. I tried putting the .img file in a zip folder and nothing. It just said aborted.

Yea go to cnet.com and download Recuva. Connect ur phone to computer. Run Recuva enable deep scan and you stuff will be restored
Sent from my HTC One X using xda app-developers app
boot ur phone to bootloader and run ruu
Try going into Recovery, and wipe cache and wipe Dalvik, then reboot.
Not sure if this will work on the One X. But I've had occasional issues with the internal SD mounting on my HTC Flyer tablet, and wiping cache and Dalvik fix it every time.
Its worth a try, anyway.
If your problem is that you cannot mount the SDCard (as opposed to being able to mount it but it is empty) I ran into something similar during my 2nd ROM flashing experience. I got into this state by doing a factory wipe from the bootloader screen (as opposed to doing it from recovery). This wiped my entire SDCard partition, even the filesystem on it. So when I booted into Android, it failed to mount the SDCard altogether, saying that it was corrupted.
I had to re-format the SDCard from Windows in order to recover, by doing the following:
1. Boot into recovery (for me was TWRP 2.1.8.1)
2. Select "Mount"
3. Checkmark "Mount SDCard"
4. Connect device to PC via USB cable
5. Select "Mount USB Storage" in TWRP
6. On the PC, find the SDCard's drive in My Computer, right-click on it, and select "Format"
7. Proceed with formatting the SDCard ("Quick Format" is fine)
8. Safely remove the USB storage from Windows
9. Reboot the device
Upon rebooting, the SDCard mounted fine, although all data was erased.
Lesson learned: do factory reset from recovery, not the bootloader screen

I'm having the same issue, but I can't check the SD card box in TWRP?
Any idea what I can do to fix this?
I had the same issue. however if you USB to PC and format sd drive, twrp will sometimes find. Also notice that when I did that my rom zip, kernal files to flash were in the twrp file in recovery.
Make sure you have everything backed up.
I guess I should add that twrp wouldn't mount however USB to PC still found it.

Ditto, exact same problem. Any solutions?
I've been having the same problems. My phone has been in a soft brick for 1 week and a half now and nothing seems to work.
Suggestions I've been given (None worked for me):
-Hold power button for 10 seconds for a force reboot
-Flash stock recovery, go in Hboot, Clear Storage, Flash TWRP, wipe cache.
-Connect an SD card reader to your phone with the rom in it.
-Partition SD from TWRP
-Relock phone and flash stock RUU (My phone is on 1.94 firmware and there is no equivalent RUU. I tried all of them and they all say I have the wrong ROM)
The only suggestion I have been given that would work is to buy a new phone... But I am not that desperate yet.
Maybe one will work for you

Now that I think of it, it is probably not necessary to checkmark "Mount SDCard". The reason is that doing so only mounts (or unmounts) it for access within TWRP and should not affect the USB access. So if you cannot checkmark it, try just ignoring that step.

I didn't. I had to wipe the SDCard by formatting it. More correctly, the factory reset that I performed from hboot wiped the SDCard, so it was already wiped... I just had to format it. Lesson learned: only perform factory reset from recovery (TWRP or CWM), as it does not touch the SDCard.

My phone is now booting, but it still can't mount or recognize the SD card. Do I have to reflash again or is there some setting I can use to get it to mount?
I did this and this is what Xsmagical and I did to fix it.
Take the stock android recovery from a ruu or stock Rom. (I used the one from 1.85 ruu but it doesn't matter.)
Fastboot flash the stock recovery to your phone and then reboot into bootloader where you originally wiped.
Factory reset from hboot and then Fastboot flash twrp again, mount sd should be available now. Mount sd, copy whatever Rom onto sd card and flash from there.
Freaked me out too man
