[Q] Next potential phone? - General Questions and Answers

My old CDMA hero is about ready to die, its eating SD cards, turning off randomly and the volume buttons dont always work, what would be a good replacement phone? Im looking for a phone with a strong dev base on SPRINT i wanted the droid x but i cant find a way to switch it to sprint. Any advice on this or new phone suggestions are appriciated.
It is rooted and running CM7 so preferably a phone that can run CM or something AOSP

Sorry.. I can't help.. i have no ide

I'd say the evo, has more dev support than just about anything, and definitely has CM7.

I'd recommend to wait out for the Nexus 3.

The future is floppy
It's more bends and twists really..

I love Galaxy S and Nexus S so SGS 2 would have win points over Motorola Atrix 4G (CES Winner 2011), though I've seen poor reviews, I find it hard to believe with all the power and features this could mess up, love the WebTop ;-)
Nexus 3 is January 2012, here and now it's Galaxy S II, even with it's missing physical camera button, flimsy battery cover, missing notification LED and whines from reviews made with pre-release models, I find it hard to accept such an amazing device, only made better could be wrong!
For the record, I also think the Sony Arc is a nice phone. I'm not interested in nice things.. only truly inspirational and feature rich devices make it to my view. SGS screens are amazing but then.. they did practically invent HD Television so it stands to reason ;-)
For the record I own two Desire HD's... My wife likes the functionality. I think she is blind and the second, is what happens when you get over enthused with HBOOT ROM hacking and carried away
I've blown up Sony Xperia X10's and keep one around for fun.. does not mean I endorse a PlayStation phone.. I have a PSP for that ;-) The DRM system implemented in Sony's early devices is now gone, thankfully and have been told the ARC is what I expected when I purchased my first Xperia X10 and wouldn't doubt it either, but it's not a Tegra 2!
What do you want from your phone? I use a camera for photo's, games machine for games, computers for programming and tablets for reading.. my phone really is a phone with email and SMS... it's your call!
Good luck!

I'm kinda looking at the evo but not sure because of the flimsy screen the nexus looks good aswell but I haven't had the chance to play with one as for the others, those are GSM it needs to be CDMA thanks for all of your suggestions keep em coming.

Nexus One or Galaxy S?

The only difference that I see between the two (T-Mobile USA's Galaxy S) is that the screen is .3 larger... Any other difference? Thanks.
802.11n on Samsung
also see here
gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=3115&idPhone2=3069
802.11n on nexus also. I prefer the stock android look + themes, we can even run the samsung launcher.
Either phone is a great phone to go with. It all depends if you like the larger screen size and the manipulation of the UI elements from a secondary company. But as for future OS releases, the nexus one will always be the first to receive them. As time goes on manufacturers will release better hardware and thus the nexus one will become even more obsolete. Ultimately, it falls on the end user as to which device s/he will likely choose. To sum it up it all boils down to preferences.
The Samsung will be great for 3D apps/games due to its better gpu and larger screen but then it comes down to whether you want Vanilla Android or not as the rest of the features are coming on 2.2. Cool feature of Galaxy S is its ability to function as a remote for 2010 Samsung tv's

u can also give HTC Desire a thought!
well since N1 has Google's logo at the back this means constant updates (first to get em also) and more support... also i like thinking that i have a phone by a company named " high tech computing" + a google engraving at the back rather than this.

cmon it's a frisdge company
(p.s i'm kiding no hard feelings)
You forgot, Galaxy S also know as Vibrant, will have front facing VGA camera, no LED flash, 4" SUPER AMOLED display (better in sunlight but not much) Faster GPU, CPU, better multi-touch handling and 720P Video recordering without rooting or modding.
I want one, but I currently have NEXUS ONE... engraved... LOL
I'll wait until the end of the year for better super phones.
I have a Nexus One and I was thinking about getting this phone as a replacement. The problem I'm having with my N1 is the shotty 3G. It kills me, at times I will have full bars of 3G, and seconds later it will drop to two bars of Edge. This problem doesn't occur on my wifes phone(mytouch slide), she keeps full 3G. I won't even be using the phone, I can just have them sitting on the kitchen table and watch the levels of service drop on my N1. I've also noticed as of late that the screen isn't responsive, causing me to have to touch multiple times to get something accomplished, ie: when using the keyboard, or even trying to unlock my phone.
Other than those things, I love my N1 ... but I'm starting to wonder if the Galaxy S will be an upgrade?
Galaxy S It's Bigger(screen) lignhter better colors better prosesor better gpu records out of box at 720p samsungs easy to use touchwiz,
Nexus One It says google on the back lol
I found this one today, pretty usefull and clearly Galaxy rocks2:

New leaked pics of Nexus Prime

Here is a possible picture of Nexus Prime and his 1,280x72 display screen resolution:
http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-19736_7-20115325-251/might-this-be-the-nexus-prime/
That's 320dpi on 4.5" screen vs Apple's 326dpi on a 3.7" screen. I'll take that in the Super AMOLED plus please.
They better have a huge battery to last! Notice the touch on-screen buttons
My prediction is that the size of the phone will be just about the same as Nexus s but the extra space for buttons and probably little more on top makes the extra .5" of screen.
And when you think about it, it makes total sense because for movie watching, you can just get those buttons out of the way and have a bigger screen.
I wish it's not only released under Verizon as rumor said so.. it would be great if it is a GSM/CDMA compatible device

That would be an asinine move figuring iPhone is on the big 3 now. And I don't know where you read that. (I didn't read the cnet article there so if it was there...)
I like that leak better than the last that everyone believes. And that's just some words with Honeycomb buttons.
Of course this could just be the Honeycomb launcher theme with a background image of what appears to be info about the phone.

I really hope your prediction comes true about the size of the new Nexus because if it's not, I won't be buying a phone that's over 4,3 and if i can't upgrade to a Nexus phone than i might just test uncharted water...
Releasing on locked cdma carrier is bad move should stick to the traditional unlocked GSM that's if it is true about verizon
Sent from my Google Nexus S using xda premium
They need to release on all carriers. Also, they better stick to one version/name for all carriers like they did with the nexus s
love samsung displays
My wife got the Epic when I got my EVO. I envy her display. The colors are so much more rich. A co-worker just got the new Galaxy 2...WOW.
Not sure I like the idea of zero physical buttons. Though that might just be PTSD from the Blackberry Storm 2.
wow 4.6inch screen lol. this thing is gonna be a monster
whoooooa
I hope it isn't as curved at the picture makes it look
Love these leaks, the iphone 5 looked so cool
Oh that's cool! 2
other than the LTE features, its no real different than whats already available. Also why the 1.2Ghz processor. Most are releasing with 1.5

[Discussion] Looks like Pantech is moving to the big leagues with the Pantech Magnus

Known mostly for budget-friendly phones with not very hot tech specs in the U.S., Pantech might be looking to upgrade its playing league. We haven’t yet heard anything clear about the recently teased Flex, but the Vega S5, Star Q 4G LTE and Marauder looked like much more than the modest gadgets we’ve been used to see from Pantech.
Now a new Pantech-made phone has been leaked, and, although it’s not exactly a contender for the Galaxy S3 or HTC One X, it might come with high-end-ish specs. The Magnus (which is Latin for “great”) seems to be on its way to AT&T and might enjoy a release by the end of September.
First spotted getting FCC approval at the beginning of August under the P9090 codename, the Magnus now stars in a leaked pic that can only mean one thing. Someone is trying to build hype around the handheld, so a launch is imminent.
The photo doesn’t reveal much about the “Great”, aside from the featuring of an 8MP rear-facing camera with flash and the inclusion of a front-facing webcam (most likely a 1.3MP one). Still, we can easily tell that the phone will be running ICS out of the box or maybe even Jelly Bean, having some juicy on-screen navigation buttons.
A few other tech specs have been rumored before, including the featuring of a dual-core 1.5GHz Qualcomm MSM8960 Snapdragon S4 processor, an Adreno 225 GPU, 1GB of RAM, 16GB of on-board memory and a 720p HD display. The screen will probably measure around 4.3 inches in diagonal, although it could go up to 4.5.
As for the design, this is actually quite intriguing. The front is not very original or unusual, looking kind of bland even, but the back is a whole different story. There are not only sexy curves there, but also quirky bumps, which makes this look a bit like HTC’s Incredibles. This is clearly one love or hate design point, and, while some will find it innovative, cool and special, others will most likely call it ugly or tacky. I for one kind of like it, because, even if it’s not the absolute most elegant phone ever, it’s not ordinary either.
We of course know nothing about the Magnus’ price or exact release date, but as soon as we’ll find out something we’ll let you know. For now, tell us if you’re at least intrigued about the phone’s design and rumored spec sheet.

So what do you think? Will it be big? Personally i have the pantech burst and it's a very good phone but we have so few developers. So will this be on top? or a flop?
I think this is a great phone in todays market even including LTE capability, if price would be around usd. 250,-
Can this phone be purchased WITHOUT an ATT-plan ?
I would like to use it in Europe (Netherlands), so where to buy ?
Anyone...
interesting, I've never paid attention to them before but more variety and competition is a good thing.

witch origine it is ?
If it is priced right (around 199) i think it would do well. If it is priced more than 200 i would just save up for the GS3 or OneX
Will it be released in indonesia ?

it has AT&T branding.. seems like only America will get it? and its probably available so cheap because of subsidies.
Wonder how it compares with the pantech maurader, battery life on it was terrible. had some nice features for older people.

[QWERTY] The definitive Guide to Full Keyboard Phones!

IntroductionWant a QWERTY phone? This is the place to look! In this guide I will be writing about full keyboard phones, as I know there are many fans out there!
The quick reviews will be based mostly on feeling, how the phone feels, and how it functions after a brief testing. I will not comment on the software, and I cannot comment on the battery life.
Android - Motorola
1. Motorola Photon Q

This phone is one of the best qwerty phone out there today, if not the best, but it has a major downfall in that it is only supported by Sprint's CDMA network, and has a fixed SIM card, therefore cannot be used as a global phone. There is a SIM mod that can be performed on bad ESN phones and regular phones by CornholioGSM available Here
Specs:
1.5GHz Dual Core Snapdragon S4 Processor
4.3" Screen
Backlit Keyboard
LTE 4G
More...
Quick Review:
This phone feels very solid in the hand, albeit a little plasticky, and feels like it can take a lot of hits before breakage. The screen is very nice, as with most new motorola phone screens, it is vivid and bright and has a decent qHD resolution. The phone's vibration motor is very nice (unlike samsung phones) , and the tactile feedback is good. The software is quick and snappy, although after a few bursts, the camera slows down.
The keyboard is spacious and easy to use, although it is impossible to use with one hand. The keyboard is the best on the market.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
Developing...
2. Motorola Droid 4
This phone is probably the second best qwerty phone available, and is the best phone that works unlocked as a world phone. Any sim can be used with the phone.
Specs:
1.2GHz Dual Core TI OMAP Processor
4.0" Screen
Backlit Keyboard
LTE 4G
More...
Quick Review:
This phone feels almost exactly the same as the Photon Q, but slightly smaller. The keyboard feels exactly the same, and is likely the same hardware used on the Photon Q. The software is different from the Photon Q, it is not as quick as the Photon, but it is still fine for daily use. The version I tested was on ICS 4.0, not gingerbread.
As with the Photon Q, the keyboard is impossible to use with one hand, but it is extremely capable as a 2 handed keyboard.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
3. Motorola Defy Pro
The android phone that looks like a blackberry! Hmm.... It's waterproof! Android 2.3...
Specs:
1GHz Single Core Processor
2.7" Horizontal Screen
Non Sliding Keyboard
3.5G (HSDPA)
Quick Review:
This phone has horrible software, It is stuck on Android Gingerbread! While the software is not bad, every swipe has micro-lags, and is surprisingly usable for Gingerbread. CM9 is available for this device, which may improve performance.
Keyboard is very similar to a blackberry keyboard (that's a good thing!) and is very good and workable with 1 hand. The 4-way pad and the surrounding keys are not very well designed, and can be wrongly pressed easily.
Android - Sony Ericsson
4. Sony Xperia Mini Pro
This is the cutest phone i've ever seen, a tiny 3" phone with a full size slide out qwerty keyboard.
Specs:
1GHz Dual Core Snapdragon Scorpion
3" Screen
Backlit Keyboard
More...
Quick Review:
This phone feels like a miniature brick, with a super solid slide out mechanism. The small and stout form factor of the phone creates a sense of unbreakability, and the thickness of the phone does not seem excessive. Software is Gingerbread 2.3, upgradeable to ICS 4.0, and the software is extremely quick, albeit being Gingerbread, or ICS. The feel of the phone is great, with solid buttons, although the volume rocker is not very good. As an added bonus, the phone looks very nice, and has a solid sheet of glass for the front.
I am using Galaxy y pro duo, this phone's keyboard looks very good. Not available in my country.
I don't know how definitive the list can be without mentioning the AWS phones Mytouch 4G slide or Relay 4G. by specs they seem to compete with the top motorollas in your list
wow, nice guide, thanks!!
You should include The Desire Z, or as they call it in the USofA, T-mobile G2.
How about sony xperia pro ? Or maybe Samsung galaxy pro ?

I've recently just ordered a Newman N2, to replace my ageing HTC Sensation XE, and was wondering whether anyone had any experience, views, opinions on this phone? As you can see from the specs below it is quite similar to the Samsung Galaxy S3. Importantly though it costs a lot less.
The reason I'm posting this on XDA is in hope that some developers will be interested in it and start to develop custom ROMs for this impressive budget alternative to the Samsung Galaxy S3.

That would be good. I'd love to see AOKP myself, as I'm currently running that on my HTC Sensation XE. I've tried lots of different ROMs, but I always come back to AOKP.

this phone currently is just a combination of great hardware and crappy medium firmware.
Buggy and unstable firmware which is annoying.
I hope there would be some awesome ppl who will create some better roms.

Totally agree. If someone can create a solid ROM, then this phone will be amazing. Especially when compared to the similarly spec'd Samsung Galaxy S3, which costs a whole lot more.
