Asus Honeycomb 3.1 Update SMTP/TLS Problems - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I got my Asus Transformer today and it did the 3.1 update. I went to the email app to add my work email which uses IMAP and when I get to the smtp section it won't accept my settings. We tried it on a co-worker's Xoom with 3.1 and it worked fine. In installed the CA certificate via external storage but no luck. Here is the error I get:
Cannot safely connect to server.
(SSL handshake aborted: ssl-0xz851450: Failure in SSL
library, usually a protocol error
error: 140770FC:SSL routines:SSL23_GET_SERVER_HELLO:
unknown protocol (external/openssl/ssl/s23_clnt.c:683
0xad12b3f8: 0x00000000))
Does anyone have any ideas or know a work around for this. I have the settings set to TSL (Accept all certificates) with port 587.

I have moved your post to the General Forum as it did not belong in the thread you posted it in. Please keep any posts specific to the thread in future.
Mark.

In smtp config, wipe your pre-filled login/password fields, then uncheck authentification request box, then press next. It should work.

damn, same problem here. I need to authenticate to my smtp server, so wiping user/pass is not an option.
Any news on this ?
Thanks,

SMTP problem
Also facing this issue, works fine on my Galaxy 2.3.4 but not on 3.1 on Asus EEE TF.

Same problem here. My HTC Legend connects to my SMTP mail server just fine, but Honeycomb does not...
I don't think it's an Asus problem, it's a more widespread Honeycomb problem with SSL/TLS.

Interesting to note: Worked on my Iconia with 3.0, and continued to work after updating to 3.1 until I needed to change my password. Now it's like it doesn't save the TLS + port setting (I use a custom port.)

I have this problem, too.
I createt an issue on the android-bug-tracker.
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=19109
Hit the yellow star to get this issue fixed sonner than later.

I had this problem too with pop3 account, all I need too do is to delete the login and the password then uncheck the authentification button. If you just uncheck the button it won't work. I guess it's the same for imap.

Tried that already unsuccessfully.
Like @rhaaa I need the user/pw for authentication.

Under the SMTP settings screen make sure the 'Require Sign-in' is checked on and then clear both the Username and Password fields and then uncheck the 'Require Sign-in' box.
It should work after that.

Still getting the same error as the OP. Third party programs seem to work fine, just the default email program causing issues. Any help would be appreciated.

The Android issue 19109 (not allowed to post links) says it's fixed but not released. As I understood it has been fixed in the email app. (And I didn't follow Android development closely but the source code of Honeycomb is still hidden, right? So there is no way to fix that?)
That's quite annoying. I just got a Transformer and almost the most essential thing does not work. (Actually I bought the thing for my wife for web and mail :-()
Does anyone know workarounds or alternatives? K9 is nice on my phone but it's not very nice on a tablet.

Asus android 3.2 smtp fix
Hello,
I found the following solution on the WEB; this is the only good solution today :
Think I got it!!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Brian,
I think I worked it .... Went through all the setup again (as you described) but on the OUTGOING SETTINGS I deleted the username and password before unticking the box for secure sign in - that is, delete what's there and then uncheck the box - and it worked.
Screen displays something like
Secure Check-in (with box ticked)
Username [email protected]
Password ***********
Delete both so it looks like
Username
Password
and then uncheck the tick from Secure Login
I also changed the PORT from the one presented (587 I think) to the one I normally use 25 so you'd need to do that as well.
I've got some email notifications in and sent myself a test email that came through. I hope this works for you. Let me know.

Im glad you found that solution in your searching but I did post the exact same fix about 3 months ago here on xda lol

Workaround / possible solution
Using STARTTLS instead of SSL/TLS works. This is for connecting to smtp.office365.com. Hope it helps others like me.

JH7 now on Kies..exchange mail no longer works

Yeaterday(IST), when I connected my Captivate to Kies I got notified of JH7 update.
My Captivate is unlocked, not rooted and was on stock firmware(jp6 I guess). Phone is on Airtel's network in India.
I grabbed the update using Kies and upgrade of phone completed successfully.
Before upgrade, my phone was configured for exhange email and I was getting my exchange email in phone without a problem.
After the upgrade, email client asked to setup a 6 digit numeric password. I tried to set it. But, for some reason phone doesn't detect the password as numeric. A bug?
What ever 6 digit number I try to set as password, i get an error saying that password needs to be numeric.
Crap!
I tried removing account and adding again, reboot of phone..etc nothing work.
Is there any work around fir this?
I read in engadget that Samsung added exchange security policy support in JH7 and it appears to be the reason its asking me to set password which is not working. looks like Sansung's QA team didn't do their job well.
By the way, I read reports of Tethering option removed from phone's USB settings. But, connect USB to laptop and set USB to 'KIES' mode. Use 'tethering' shortcut in Kies application. Tethering works!, atleast on Airtel in India.

I don't know how to fix your problem but try downloading Touchdown from the market and see if that works. Maybe it will get you by until you find a solution. Make sure you pick the one Exchange for Android 2.x.

The maintenance crashed and ate my post about JH7 firmware update from Kies enabled.
Anyway, I did upgrade to JH7 and exchange service works fine for me. It didnt ask me to set up any security password. I am in da US.

@C3000C: good to know that your exchange email works after upgrade. May be your exchange server doesn't enforce security policies?
My exchange server requires me to setup password for phone screen unlock.

Exchange still works fine
I have 2 exchange accts set up on my phone. Both work fine after JH7.
One change after JH7 - One of my accts requires a passwd on the phone. Before the upgrade, when I hit the text box, previouly I used to get the full keyboard. I would have to change to numeric to enter the passwd. After JH7, it defaults to numeric keyboard.

I read in another thread that the Samsung keyboard seems to be possibly typing in letters instead of numbers even though you can see the numbers being typed. Not sure if this is the same thing but maybe trying another keyboard, like the Android one instead of samsung or vice versa may yield different results? You can set this on phone settings > Locale and Text.
Solved
Earlier I was trying to set an easy numeric password(like 123456) and it was giving me an error to type 'numeric password'.
I later tried it using a bit complicated numeric password and it accepted the password.
So, the issue was that I was using a very easy numberic password and hence it was not accepting that password.
but, what an error message shown by email app!!
looks like Samsung ran out of error messages

[Q] gmail keeps asking for password help!

Please help! A while ago, i was synchronizing my gmail when wp7 asked me to ipdate and reinput my password. But each time i type in the right password, it says that the password is incorrect! Tried deleteting the account on my phone and putting it back again, still the same. On the browser and also on the desktop, i can log on normally using the same password. Please help
That sounds really strange. I've never had any issues with my gmail accounts.
It sounds like a typo, but since you've tried it several times that may not be the case.
Are you sure you didn't mistype the email address instead of the password?
I know that with the software keyboard, I sometimes hit the key next to the one I want to hit. But I'm sure you already tried typing the password slowly and looking at each letter as you type it.
Yes i'm 100% sure i got them all correct. Tried changing and rechanging the password but still nothing. Also, i tried on my wife's iphone, and it worked perfectly. On the wp7, nothing
Is your Server listed as m.google.com?
Also, did you make sure to check "Server requires encrypted (SSL) connection?
Yes and yes, m.google.com and SSL is checked. Even tried turning my phone off but still nothing
Are you actually using a @gmail.com account, or a corporate account through Google?
i'm using a .gmail.com account. it was working before, but now, nada.
Sounds like a bug.
I heard of someone who experienced something similar. They were able to solve it by connecting to a WiFi network and then setting up their gmail account.
I'm not sure why that solved it for them, but maybe it could help you too.
And it just did. I was connected to 3G when it happened. Connected to my home wifi and it finally accepted my password. Again, i connected to 3G just to confirm it and well ut works now. Thanks for all the help guys. Will drop the wp7 guys an email about this
I just ran into the same issue.
I had changed my gmail password via web interface. then the phone asked for the new password but wouldn't accept it.
I ended up deleting the account on the phone, changing the password at gmail (again) to something different, then readded the account to the phone. In that time period though, I logged onto wifi in order to sync faster.
Would have been nice to have seen this thread earlier...
Gmail on Android persistence challenge credentials bug fix
I found this to be a bug with Gmail account log in failures on Andriod when using 2-step verification. It persistently challenges you for credentials although you have successfully logged into your Google account on another machine via a web browser.
This is the fix I found:
Step 1:
Log into your gmail account on another machine using a web browser.
Go to account settings > 2-step verification > authorising sites > application specific password
Step 2:
generate a password called gmail -android but do not click done.
Step 3:
go to device enter your gmail - andriod application specific password and you will get challenged a further 2-3 times enter the same password (you may have to also enter the CAPTCHA (a security image with distorted letters)).
Step 4:
When you are no longer challenged, try to sync with gmail if you do not get a sign-in error on your device then this has worked and be sure to click done in your your google account settings via your browser on the other machine you used.
Hope this helps to those of you who are suffering from this infuriating Google 2-step verification bug.
Hyp3rzz
I had countless issues with my Gmail account on WM6.x - same as you describe. Would not accept my credentials.
The steps described above solved it for me (having to reset using that captcha thing) but it would keep on re-occuring. Not seen it so far in WP7 though. *touch wood*

[Q] Email MS Exchange

Anyone able to use the stock email app without any problems? I can't access my work email with the stock app. I downloaded touchdown and it works without any problems, currently using the trial, $20 not worth it IMO.
No, i have no issues with Exchange using the stock app. I connect to Exchange 2003 so I can't speak for newer versions of Exchange. Do you get any error messages?
I get a cannot connect to server message. It's not a connection issue though, if I type my password wrong, I'll get a incorrect password message.

Hmm, so you have the correct domain\username, correct mail server, checked ssl settings, and you get the same message? The problem could be on the server end. Can other android users connect to your company's exchange?
Also, if Touchdown is too pricey, you can try Enhanced Email, i've used it before and it works really well. The only downside is that it's not great with your battery.
Yes other android users are able to connect. I'm also able to connect on my girlfriends Mytouch 4G.
Are you running a ROM? If not, the only thing i can think of that might work is doing a factory reset. I had a problem connecting once but it was due to a bad flash. Did you already clear cache and data from the stock email app?
Some ROMs
Some ROMs have a working email client for my corporate email, some don't. I ahd not luck with Weapon g2x, but Trigger worked, for example. Also the nighlies I used (up to 104) worked, but miui doesn't seem to work.
My advice is try ROMs until you find one that works and report the bug onthe forums if you notice problems.
So far I've tried:
Stock 2.2
Stock 2.3
Weapon G2x
Latest CM7 nightly 119
All have the same problem. Could this be a hardware problem? It's weird, why does touchdown work without any problems?
Miui
I am using the latest Miui and it seems to work with exchange. OTOH, I was able to get several of the nightlies to work with my exchange server too.
LG G2X Corporate Email (Microsoft Exchange) Connection Problem
My phone is a T-Mobile LG G2x (LGP999) running Android 2.3.3 (latest version is updated); using Microsoft Outlook 2007 (not sure what version of Microsoft Exchange is being used)
When I try to setup a corporate email (Microsoft Exchange) on my LG G2x (P999), I am receiving an error message that states: "This server requires security features your phone does not support". The steps are as follows:
1.) Go to the Email application from the main menu.
2.) Select MS Exchange.
3.) Set up email: Type your full email address and password.
4.) Server Settings: Type Domain\Username; Password; Server; Select check boxes “Use secure connection (SSL)” and optional “Accept all SSL certificates” when first box is selected.
5.) Account Options: Select how often you want your mail to arrive and your notification preference.
6.) Type a name for your account.
I am getting hung up on step #4 (Server Settings). I am 100% certain my domain\username and server address are correct but when I click “Next” to proceed to the next step I get the message "This server requires security features your phone does not support".
For a test, my colleague entered his information on steps 1-4 into my phone and proceeded to step 5 immediately (Account Options). This problem happened to one other individual and he had to purchase a new phone to correct the problem (a Samsung). The problem seems to be around the phone or mail-server but I am out of options. Is there some setting to get it to work?
Another test I performed, I successfully logged onto my friends phone with my account settings and managed to pull up my calendar / email. He was using a Motorolla phone that used Android 2.2 (an older version than I am using).
Other Notes:
A.) I can log into my webmail but this feature does not sync my calendar or give me instant email notifications. My email in Microsoft Outlook is working as well.
B.) My username and password combination is definitely not the problem. I tried typing in a different password and it gives me a different error (username/password entered is incorrect).
C.) I tried using “/” and “\” in the Domain\Username section. I also tried checking and un-checking the SSL options. I tried other servers available on-site (01 and 02 versions).
D.) My work technical support insists there is nothing different about my security settings but unfortunately since it is a personal device they won’t offer any real support. They blame the phone or T-mobile. T-mobile blames the phone or the server. LG blames T-mobile or the server. See my problem?
E.) I had a work phone recently that was taken away due to budget cuts so I know it is possible to get my email / calendar with an i-phone (3GS).
F.) I also tried using “Other” on step #2 and entering the information manually (selecting exchange since it is not a “Pop” server). I still get the same message.
G.) I rebooted the phone and even pulled the battery and restarted.
H.) I can connect to my work wi-fi. I activated the wi-fi and tried to enter in all the server information but it still gave me the same error with wi-fi enabled.
I.) I have setup my home email account but could not do it from the “Other” option in Step #2. (sbcglobal.net and a yahoo mail both required the yahoo app to work). I also got the g-mail account to work through the “g-mail” app.
J.) It is a brand new phone purchased yesterday 12/13/11 (i.e. factory reset seems pointless and not attempted).
Is there some phone setting I am missing? Any help on this matter or another method to sync my calender / work emails to my phone will be appreciated!!!
Thanks in advance
I don't believe Android currently supports some features of Microsoft Exchange yet because of security permissions. There is an app in the market that bypasses those checks but it's risky, because if your phone ever gets stolen and your work needs to wipe it, they can't and you may get in trouble for breaking policy. For the most part though, they wont know. I'll search for it for you but I don't remember the name.
EDIT: Sorry didn't read all the thread My browser pulled me to the last post of the thread and I thought it was OP haha
Still though, it could just be security restrictions stopping you like I said.

It's weird that you tried CM7 and it didn't work. The stock rom has an older email.apk that is not compatible with the newer versions of Exchange and some security policies but CM7 should not have that problem.
what settings are you using?
I've used both Touchdown and the default Android email client at work without a problem, but your Exchange server must fully support ActiveSync. I would ask your IT support or server admin to help you out.
BTW, while Touchdown may seem pricey, it just works. I use it daily and would recommend it to anyone wanting to connect to Exchange servers. I tried other solutions but always went back to Touchdown. Their support service is top notch.
The only problem I have is that once in a while the email app will delete my account. It only happens to exchange, my pop 3 accounts stay there.
Edit: Of course, as soon as I say this I have a problem connecting I changed my password at work and when I tried to change it on my phone it would not work. I removed the account and added it but still nothing. I wiped the cache and davlik cache and added the account, great success.

Problems with email setup?

I'm not sure if it's a problem with the phone or something else, but I CANNOT setup any email accounts with this phone.
Having used a Captivate, I'm familiar with the process, but whether using the auto setup or inputting the server names/ports directly, all I get it errors.
Any idea WTH is going on?
What do the errors say?

When it tries to go through the auto setup it gives me an error saying Setup Could Not Finish - Username or password incorrect". I KNOW 100% that the username and password are correct (and that I'm entering it correctly) as I'm able to login to my email directly at Cableone.net using the exact same information (and it's been the same for YEARS).
I think it has something to do with the fact that Cableone.net's email is/has switched to GMail and I'm betting there's some confusion there.
[edit]We figured it out - Apparently we had to migrate the email to the Gmail stuff... once we did that, it worked.
Glad you got it working

Rooted, Can no longer receive Exchange emails with Email app

Hello,
I just rooted and changed my build.prop file to get Wallet working and it seems since all of that, the default Mail app will no longer connect to my Exchange server. I tried clearing app data to no avail. I downloaded Touchdown to see if it would work, and it connected just fine. I'm an admin on the server if anything needs to be changed in there. Everything else on the phone seems to be working normally.
Error: "Unable to connect to server."
Tried: Result
- Intentionally mistyped credentials: Username/password incorrect.
- Using IP address instead of hostname: SSL certificate error, Continue, Unable to connect to server.
- Using Touchdown: Works fine.
Thanks in advance.
FOR THE GOOGLERS
I ended up having to unroot for an OTA update using this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=32918402&postcount=19
After doing so, email is working fine. I'm reluctant to re-root due to this issue. I'll update this if I ever re-root and it's working.

I did. It gives the same error."Setup could not finish. Unable to connect to server."
Seems like it's common with 4.0.4, but it was working fine before root.
Anyone know where I can find a log for the default email app?
