NS4G signal.. software or hardware? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

what do you guys think?? is it hardware or software?
if hardware, do you think samsung will make it right with a new phone for people who bought this one? or sprint, or google...

i just read this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=13837699&postcount=22
does that explain it to you guys??? im still on the fence.

i just went and exchanged mine.. it does seem a little better.. and i noticed the PRL is different.

I've read around here that the 01115 prl means you have a discount on your account. So if you updated prl after you exchanged, that would be the reason.

Nvm guys is sprint messing up now is on roaming and never had it at home and I know is sprint cause my wife just got home and her phone is roaming to and I haven't done anything to hers and she.never had roaming in the last year
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using Tapatalk
I have the same issue and I am not roaming. I have tried Rooted and Unrooted. I personally think it is a Sprint issue as you suggest but I also think it is a Qualcom/Samsung issue. I have a new one coming in tomorrow. If it exhibits the same behavior I will wait it out.

3g Bands

Could someone make a baseband update to support all 3g bands. I realised the optimus 2x until now has had this. Can someone update the radio to support 850/900/1700/1900/2100 bands so international users can fully enjoy without the data messing up. Uk runs on 2100 but still sometimes my connection times out in data every 5 Minuets.
Not possible.
I wonder this should be a basic question for a ROM developer.
Messing with the baseband is too dangerous and can brick a phone instantly if something's wrong with the programming.
Sorry man, no one's gonna do it.

It would expand the capabilities of our phone and allow us to truly run any network. It would also make our phone more valuable to be honest.

Does the g2x have the hardware for that? Network capability is based on hardware. Hence why tmobile phones will never get 3g on
At&t, they just don't have the ability to. No amount of software twiddling can change that.
Sent from my T-mobile G2
The phone supposedly supports all bands, just as the O2x according to T-Mobile and the FCC. Shortly after its release we learned T-Mobile locked it down until the AT&T merger goes through.
A carrier in Canada is releasing a version of the G2x. Perhaps it will not have the baselands locked like T-Mobile has it.

Antenna Problem help!!!

Hi guys I have been getting slow speeds, on my 4g galaxy s is really slow the top is 0.12mbps beyond that it can't even touch 0.13, is something wrong with the radio?, i called my service provider and they said that my service was fine and it could be a problem with the phone. The phone is brand new and it started a couple of days ago, they also say it may be a problem with the towers in my area. It has to do with the phone I think because the tower cant be bad for days

I'd assume your service provider would know the status of the towers they utilize, especially since its been a "couple" of days. But, I do believe more information would have to be provided in order to receive any useful help

Well a few days ago but it was working fine until I started this issue with my old rom T959VUVI1 then I just falshed to the october one and still the same issue. I know 2.3.5 didn't cause the problem what I do know is that I installed radio apps from the appstore and then it started happening. !
Call them and have them reset the phone service.. What ROM if any are you using? Try flashing a few different modems on your phone. I currently run KI3 with Valhalla 1.3.2 in the sticks and get perfect service however that's through t-mobile.

so where did you get the rom from?
just reflash another rom from the bible thread in the dev section. if you still get the problem, try to flash another modem and test them all out. if you still get the same problem, go somewhere that you know for a fact has great signal and try the modems again. if you still get it, it is a phone issue. you may also want to make sure you have the latest sim card. if you are using an older one, you will run into problems with the upgrades to the towers.
Read his reply above.wasn't a phone issue. He's using simple mobile and was throttled.

PRL Version P:None

Morning all,
This is probly a noobie question but i couldn't find an answer searching around. My son just got a replacment phone from Asurion, Sprint Insurance Claim. Its a nexus s just like his last one. Its updated to JB. But now with this phone beofe he updated it and after the call reception is terrible. I asked him to text me the baseband and prl info and this is what he sent me.
Baseband - D720SPRLF2
PRL Version - P:None
Dose anybody know why it says P:None under prl version? How can i fix this? Is this why the call reception is so bad or do i got to try a differnt baseband? If so any one know one that works well in the Madison WI area? I am going to see my son tommarrow and can look at the phone in person then, just want to have a game plan because i will only have a limited time with the phone.
Any and all help greatly apreciated!

Can he not go into settings, about phone, sprint updates and update his profile and prl? My current prl is 60690.
He said he tried that the other day and it didn't change. Is there a dialer code to force an update?

i askd sprint that the other day and they said
no, not any more...

Problems getting 4G LTE on Sprint Network

Hi,
I got my Nexus 5 from a 3rd party Sprint Dealer, known as Wirefly.com -- Is anyone having problems accessing 4G LTE from Sprint? I am in the 100% best coverage zones according to Sprint.
I have done heaps of troubleshooting steps with Sprint, to no avail. They are blaming it on a faulty phone.
Anyone else having this issue?
Its been happening since I received the phone on Dec 4th.
Thank you
Are you rooted? What radios are you on?

Yeah, I am on 4.4.2.
Wirefly is currently out of stock, otherwise they said they would replace it. I am going to keep checking back with them everyday to get a new one. Any suggestions in the mean time? Sprint tech support has been hit or miss. I have been told that there is tower problems from Baltimore to Southern Virginia, then another tech support agent tells me no problems at all!
I do not know what to believe anymore or what to do!
Well i know i got perfect lte the first two weeks i had my phone, then almost three weeks without it, then now its back. I know its a sprint thing. Are you getting lte anywhere at all?

First, thank you for your replies. I am not too up to date with rooting and such, so I apologize for that in advance.
The most I can get is LTE with 1 bar. That has been when I am driving around.
I can see the tower from my Condo, and according to their coverage maps, I should be getting "LTE Best" at home and work.
Thank you again.

I switched from TMobile to Sprint (in-contract, so I had to pay to get out of TMobile) with the hopes of Sprint being better, but as of now, I have not seen that at all!
Im pretty sure it will get better when sprint rolls out spark (officially), and Google updates the radio again

Well I have every intention of still getting a new phone from Wirefly.
It was odd, did Wirefly send you the phone with the SIM (or whatever they call it ICCA?? card) inside of it already?
Any ETA on the rollout of that?
Yes the sim is already in your phone. And i don't blame you for wanting a new phone, best to rule out a bad phone

If you are on 4.4.2 then you need to root and flash a different modem or wait for google to send out an update.
Since you are getting lte but with a weak signal this is most likely the problem of course coverage maps are very vague and it may be that you are just too far from the tower.

I can literally see the tower from my balcony at my condo.
Leary of doing anything to the phone because I am going to get a new one from Wirefly when they have them in stock.

Yeah, I am only able to get 3G with 2-3 bars at a time. Like I said, if I drive around, I will barely get LTE, maybe 1 bar.
How good is the signal strength?
Anyone know of an ETA on when Google will push out a new update?

Pretty good. -91dBm from here in my bedroom. You can force lte via dialer codes such as "*#*#4636#*#*" but you will not be able to receive calls or texts.

Ahh.
They did heaps of dialer codes when I called tech support. I forget exactly which ones, but they made me do them several times.
Also, when going into Settings > More > Mobile Networks > Preferred Network Type > does anyone's else default to GLOBAL instead of LTE? I keep switching mine to LTE, but it shunts it back to Global randomly.... I can't figure out why...
