I'm looking for a file manager app that can read from and write to internal memory, internal SD card, removable SD card and SMB shares. I am currently unrooted. Here is what i have tried so far without luck:
Default ASUS File Manager: Doesn't support SMB shares.
Atsro: FCs as soon as an SMB share is defined.
File Manager HD: Can't see the removable SD card.
Does anyone have any other suggestions?
Thanks
Did you try the Estrong one? I still don't have the TF, but so far is my favourite file manager.

I use Estrongs file explorer, isn't HC optimized but works well.
Ah yes, EStrongs seems to do all of that (although I'm not on my network to test SMB). Nice to see that it can do FTP, too.
Thanks
i was using es strong, but now I am using file expert. I like its feature of selecting " to open with". The UI isn't for that good for tablets yet. It has the some of the features es strong has.

Thanks, it looks like File Expert can also get to all the locations I need. But I think I'll stick with EStrongs since it has the FTP feature too. "Open with" does sound useful though.

I'm looking for the specific features mentioned in my original post. How do you access the removable SD card in File Manager HD? It certainly looks nicer than the others, as you say.
I use FileManager HD, It is great because you can add bookmarks to the smb shares or folders you use most.
To access removable cards (in the dock or in the TF) press "Home" and then "Up" twice. Scroll down a bit and you should see "Removable"

File Manager HD looks great, but I'm sticking with EStrong. Estrong can connect to FTPs, and doesn't have ads.

Hi, I would like to know which app do you use to connect (from your Samsung Galaxy Tab - SGT) to a shared folder in your home network?
I mean if I have a shared folder in a Windows PC (in my home net), which program do you use (in your Samsung Galaxy Tab) to "see" inside that folder?
Astro? Ghost Commander? Other app ?
Thanx
I was trying this last night..
There's an App pre-installed made by Samsung, (I think) called AllShare, This is a DLNA client. I didn't have any look with it last night but I was only messing around for like 5 minuets so.
try 'es file explorer'.
Astro with the smb add-on works fine for me

Try File Expert
Had the same kind of doubts. Tried several file managers, and so far (2days) File Expert is my favourite. It didn't work at first though, but after exiting and restarting the proggie it works just fine... ES File Explorer works just as fine but I somehow prefer File Expert... But that's just me!
On my Desire I use CifsManager to mount my network shares. When mounted you can use the shares from al your apps, for example Astro or Rockplayer.
It works perfectly, but your device has to be rooted.

CifsManager only works on a cooked rom that has the cifs module compiled with it. Using it on my N1
I am desperately looking for a cifs.ko module compiled specifically for the tab as an alternative but there does not seem to be one available yet. Without the correct cifs.ko, Cifsmanager will not work (even with root) :-(
Sent from my GT-P1000
Ahh... didn't know that, sorry. I think/hope custom roms with it ported in will come soon. Then there will be nothing left from getting a tab myself... except the price maybe ;-)

ES File Explorer I confirm
I find this works alot better then droidftp I was using before. Does anyone know is there a file size limitation on viewing pictures? Any picture of decent size I try to open doesnt show. I can copy/paste the file to the sd card and it views.
ES File Explorer is great for network share!!!! Works very well an android 2.1, htc wildfire.
Allshare program works good with .AVIs (and perhaps others). Just make sure in WM player understreaming you enable access to files and designate which files are to be included in your library. Only thing allshare takes like 30s to load all my files into allshare filelist. Other than that and the lack of codecs support it's fine. I also use ES file explorer and astroshare.
How do you guys do it? I tried the all share app but ask it shows is my device..
Hi;
Im looking for recommendations for a good file manager for my HTC Desire HD, I mainly use a mac as my primary PC but also use Win XP and 7.
I'm looking for something that can access files on my SD card on my phone.
Root Explorer is what i use. Perfect for my needs.

Best one there is!
+1 for both Astro and Root Explorer

I use astro and root explorer together.
I love the user friendly interface of astro and its amazing app manager.
The only thing that makes me use root explorer is.. well the root aspect astro can't explore the phone's root.
I use FileGo
It's not a popular one,..due to people not understanding how it work I think (many comments say it doesnt have copy/paste),..but I like it more then Astro (which I used till it went pro).
FileGo has 2 explorer windows you can swipe between and drag/drop files for easy copy/paste.
Another nice feature is Catalog button on the bottom which gives you quick access to: SD Card, Processes, Apps, APKs, Music, Pictures.
I'll have to give root explorer a go though, only rooted recently.
I'm a file manager fanatic.
Astro-used this until it went pro
Linda manager- nice explorer
Es explorer - so far my fav
Super manager - decent, its free and allows you to explore root ... its also a task manager... its GUI is a bit unsavory and its a memory hog (28mb RAM)
Ghost commander - similar to total commander on the PC. Allows 2 pane exploring and with its update added experimental root browsing feature.
OI manager - very simple browser

Am i the only one who likes the stock files manager? Unfortunately gingerclone doesn't have it.
edit post: damn i thought i was at the vibrant sections. haha!
ES File Explorer ~ and simply because it allows me to share files with my PC.
Absolutely brilliant....
Since using ESFE I have stopped using USB to connect to my PC for sharing files.
Best three:
1.Astro
2.EStrongs (ES)
3.Dual File Manager (dual view)
first rate for astro!
ES file Explorer is my fav.

Never heard of this one until today. Whoa! This is going to be my staple file manager..beautiful folders, custom icons and classy interface..and it shows apk icons which is a must for me. Nice features in settings.
Also File Expert is nice, advanced features like "use as root explorer"..another one I liked, but can't remember.

I've been learning to be pretty carefull on apps I use since I picked up my GTablet. Weird things keep happening with my movie directories. They keep deleting the movies. For instance I tried out EFile File Manager. I've been using Rockplayer which reads local sdcard (internal memory) but doesn't ready sdcard2 (my additional mini sdmc card). So I've been using sniffer to navigate to that area then play video by clicking on the file. I grabbed EFile because I wanted and app that could copy files between internal (sdcard) and the mini sdmc (sdcard2) and the standard file apps (sniffer and file manager) don't seem to be able to do that.
However, after having a process error message on EFile and then finding my video's wiped on sdcard2 I've gotten a little more carefull about what I play around with in the market store.
For regular Viewsonic G Tablet folks is there any good file managers that would be better to use for file copies between sdcards?
Thanks!
Ghost Commander is great. It has a two pane view that works really well on a tablet.
I use root explorer for my everyday stuff when on just my tab, ESfile explorer to stream from my pc, and wifi file explorer for small file transfers to my tab. I couldn't decide on just one so I got all 3. Hope this helps!

Rockplayer will see /sdcard2. You can go into settings and set sdcard2 as default and when in sdcard2 you can hit the back button to get to the root directory from which you can see sdcard, sdcard2 and usbdisk (if you have a usb flash drive plugged in)
If you are using a file manager anyways to view media from your SDCard2, putting a .nomedia file in the root of your sd card2 should stop the files from being deleted. After that, you can use Rockplayer as normal to view your vid files.
Hands down root explorer. There is an endless amount of things it can do if you know what your doing. I've tried many. Root explorer has a plain look took it but you can do the most with it. If you are an advanced android user you can't go wrong with root explorer.

I'm a stickler on file sorting settings and view settings and root explorer does a great job here. If only it also had a file directory hiearchy window so u could just jump to another folder, instead of hitting back a bunch, ah well. It suits my needs.
Thanks for the suggestions
Thanks,
I will give those a try!
There is another one called Yaffs explorer that seems to work ok as well. It has some cosmetic bugs (menus sometimes appear in French) but I have used to do things like modify build.prop without any difficulty. And (at least at the moment) it is free.
file explorer
I use ES file explorer is what i use i activate the root explorer in the settings works geat with no problems

simple the best: total commander for android
I'm wonder what the best file explorer is......I'm stock rooted and it appears that I lost pics and music from my media card (which I physically removed from my device when I rooted), but it just may be hiding somewhere. I'm using X-Plore file app, which may not be showing me everything. Is there a better file explorer app to use?
Thanks in advance!

X-plore is great. Did you give it time for the media to get scanned in? Or have you tried an app like Rescan Media? It may be that your phone just hasn't "found" the files yet. Can you see the files by putting your card into a pc?
I rooted about a month ago and still trying to find these files.
I do not have an SD Reader for microsd that I can use in the computer, unfortunately. I'm hoping the files are still there - I don't see how they could have disappeared because I physically removed my card.

I'm a fan of Ghost Commander; if you've ever used Midnight Commander on a PC you'll find the interface really familiar. I've tried a few and so far GC is the one that holds my interest.

there are several good ones. i think a quick pool would be nice to get a discussion going.
i used root browser for a long time but now i got too many annoying ads, instead of paying i tried cm file manager, but on latest update they locked me in the sd card only... sigh. I'm sure there are work around or a "expert" version or something, but that just undermines the credibility. on most "best app" threads people mention es for explorer, but it always felt bloated to me...

I used to enjoy es explorer as its very complete but I've never installed it after the baidu fiasco. I use Cabinet beta right now. It looks very appealing but its not nearly as complete as ES.
ES File Explorer. One of the very few that remember scroll position, which is an absolute must for me.
Total Commander is my favourite because it has a LAN plugin and can be used with root privileges.
ES File Explorer ftw!
