Hi;
Im looking for recommendations for a good file manager for my HTC Desire HD, I mainly use a mac as my primary PC but also use Win XP and 7.
I'm looking for something that can access files on my SD card on my phone.
Root Explorer is what i use. Perfect for my needs.

I'm a big fan of ASTRO - http://www.appbrain.com/app/astro-file-manager/com.metago.astro

Best one there is!
+1 for both Astro and Root Explorer
Sent from a piece of ginger bread
I use astro and root explorer together.
I love the user friendly interface of astro and its amazing app manager.
The only thing that makes me use root explorer is.. well the root aspect astro can't explore the phone's root.
I use FileGo
It's not a popular one,..due to people not understanding how it work I think (many comments say it doesnt have copy/paste),..but I like it more then Astro (which I used till it went pro).
FileGo has 2 explorer windows you can swipe between and drag/drop files for easy copy/paste.
Another nice feature is Catalog button on the bottom which gives you quick access to: SD Card, Processes, Apps, APKs, Music, Pictures.
I'll have to give root explorer a go though, only rooted recently.
I'm a file manager fanatic.
Astro-used this until it went pro
Linda manager- nice explorer
Es explorer - so far my fav
Super manager - decent, its free and allows you to explore root ... its also a task manager... its GUI is a bit unsavory and its a memory hog (28mb RAM)
Ghost commander - similar to total commander on the PC. Allows 2 pane exploring and with its update added experimental root browsing feature.
OI manager - very simple browser

Am i the only one who likes the stock files manager? Unfortunately gingerclone doesn't have it.
edit post: damn i thought i was at the vibrant sections. haha!
ES File Explorer ~ and simply because it allows me to share files with my PC.
Absolutely brilliant....
Since using ESFE I have stopped using USB to connect to my PC for sharing files.
Best three:
1.Astro
2.EStrongs (ES)
3.Dual File Manager (dual view)
first rate for astro!
ES file Explorer is my fav.

Never heard of this one until today. Whoa! This is going to be my staple file manager..beautiful folders, custom icons and classy interface..and it shows apk icons which is a must for me. Nice features in settings.
Also File Expert is nice, advanced features like "use as root explorer"..another one I liked, but can't remember.
Total Commander for Android rules
Total Commander free for Android;

A must have for anyone who's working with TC on PC and a great addition for all who do not use it on PC!

as per the title, on the various file managers I've tried, I havn't been able to sus out how to select more than one jpg (for example) in a dir to del all at once.. is this an android or app function that isn't available or am I a noob and missing someing?
If you use astro file manager, you have an option on the toolbar called 'multi', you then select the files you want to delete, then the same toolbar will show different options, and here ul find the one called 'delete'!
Hope it helps!!

spot on thanks!!
If you don't want to deal with the ads in Astro, you can also use ES File Explorer. That too supports multi-select.
Or Just Install a patch that removes ADs from Astro FM.
Just google a little
Cheers

for all of androids goodness there are some glaring omissions from basic OS functionallity..
I'm sure there are reasons this kind of thing are not in the basic android interface, but as a simple end user they would be very useful.
Thanks for the other input on alternatives and hacks for ads.. --> strangly though I don't mind paying for apps or taking an ad supported one to support the devs.. unlike most software on my desktop :/ wierdness

Yeah. Adfree was one thing I installed soon after rooting my phone.
I've been learning to be pretty carefull on apps I use since I picked up my GTablet. Weird things keep happening with my movie directories. They keep deleting the movies. For instance I tried out EFile File Manager. I've been using Rockplayer which reads local sdcard (internal memory) but doesn't ready sdcard2 (my additional mini sdmc card). So I've been using sniffer to navigate to that area then play video by clicking on the file. I grabbed EFile because I wanted and app that could copy files between internal (sdcard) and the mini sdmc (sdcard2) and the standard file apps (sniffer and file manager) don't seem to be able to do that.
However, after having a process error message on EFile and then finding my video's wiped on sdcard2 I've gotten a little more carefull about what I play around with in the market store.
For regular Viewsonic G Tablet folks is there any good file managers that would be better to use for file copies between sdcards?
Thanks!
Ghost Commander is great. It has a two pane view that works really well on a tablet.
I use root explorer for my everyday stuff when on just my tab, ESfile explorer to stream from my pc, and wifi file explorer for small file transfers to my tab. I couldn't decide on just one so I got all 3. Hope this helps!

Rockplayer will see /sdcard2. You can go into settings and set sdcard2 as default and when in sdcard2 you can hit the back button to get to the root directory from which you can see sdcard, sdcard2 and usbdisk (if you have a usb flash drive plugged in)
If you are using a file manager anyways to view media from your SDCard2, putting a .nomedia file in the root of your sd card2 should stop the files from being deleted. After that, you can use Rockplayer as normal to view your vid files.
Hands down root explorer. There is an endless amount of things it can do if you know what your doing. I've tried many. Root explorer has a plain look took it but you can do the most with it. If you are an advanced android user you can't go wrong with root explorer.

I'm a stickler on file sorting settings and view settings and root explorer does a great job here. If only it also had a file directory hiearchy window so u could just jump to another folder, instead of hitting back a bunch, ah well. It suits my needs.
Thanks for the suggestions
Thanks,
I will give those a try!
There is another one called Yaffs explorer that seems to work ok as well. It has some cosmetic bugs (menus sometimes appear in French) but I have used to do things like modify build.prop without any difficulty. And (at least at the moment) it is free.
file explorer
I use ES file explorer is what i use i activate the root explorer in the settings works geat with no problems

+1 for Ghost Commander. Very nice, fast and user specific configurations.
simple the best: total commander for android
I realize everyone has their opinion about software but I was wondering if there was a good app/file management tool in the market that everyone likes or most people like. Or are these two separate applications? I plan on rooting shortly and want to get rid of the bloatware and be able to manage my files. Thanks
I like Astro File Manager, works like a charm..........
Same Here. Pro version is awesome. Free version is good too...
Root Explorer, full r/w access to the entire system, text editor, and gives you access to the /data folder that other file managers don't.
I would have to say that I have also used astro file manager since I first got my nexus one over a year ago and it is one of the first applications I download when I get a new android device. I would recommend it to anyone.

I'm going to start the root now! Thanks for the info. hopfully all goes well.
I use Astro and Root Explorer as well, both premium. I will use the root explorer to "borrow" apps from my 6 other devices to swap around with eachother.
there are several good ones. i think a quick pool would be nice to get a discussion going.
i used root browser for a long time but now i got too many annoying ads, instead of paying i tried cm file manager, but on latest update they locked me in the sd card only... sigh. I'm sure there are work around or a "expert" version or something, but that just undermines the credibility. on most "best app" threads people mention es for explorer, but it always felt bloated to me...
what's the one you use?

I used to enjoy es explorer as its very complete but I've never installed it after the baidu fiasco. I use Cabinet beta right now. It looks very appealing but its not nearly as complete as ES.
ES File Explorer. One of the very few that remember scroll position, which is an absolute must for me.
Total Commander is my favourite because it has a LAN plugin and can be used with root privileges.
ES File Explorer ftw!
Solid explorer! Hands down my favorite.

Which is the best file explorer / Manager in your opinion.
I had been using ES File Explorer for a long time but the newer changes made me shift to MiXplorer.

Try mixplorer.
It's not on play store but can be found on xda.
Root explorer here, I can't really explain why, works for me. Crappy it isn't free
ES File Explorer for me is the best
I'm using the non bloated ES version taking out of this thread w/o any issues.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/apps-games/app-es-file-explorer-3-perfect-version-t3336301
Even I was fed up of ES Explorer.. So tried my hand with MiXplorer and , boy, its good .. Lightweight and no wakelocks.. Cheers
Try FX explorer.
Best one out there.
X10 better than es file explorer
Using xplore years now...
In my opinion Its Mixplorer.
Total commander =)
Anyone who uses a newer version of ES File Explorer is a monster. I use Solid Explorer, it's just so well designed, and it's completely free of ads/bloat unlike ES. I heard that ES File Explorer even puts ads on your lock screen. Just look at all the recent reviews it got, it's pretty sad.
Was using solid explorer. Tried mixplorer........ Mindblown!

Total Commander.
it has been around for the PC quite a lot of years and even the android version is not young but lets say very "ripe" (not old!).
of course the look and feel is more like 1990s commander style, but it is very powerful if you know what you are doing.
also there is an FTP plugin (and some other ones) which come handy.
mixplorer / solid explorer
Mixplorer is dope
Fx does everything ES did for me and more, in a nicer ui/look.
Also, the root and smb/ftp/Dropbox add-ons all combine to do everything I could reasonably need it to.
It's a shame ES went the way it did. It was pretty good, but if I'm getting notified of ads, it's time to go.
Google apkmirror es file explorer
Then find version 3.2.5.3
Simply the best
Amaze. Has Google Material UI also.

Yes it constantly puts ads it even replaces your charging screen. Also, it sends ads notifications
