[Q] Best file explorer - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

I'm wonder what the best file explorer is......I'm stock rooted and it appears that I lost pics and music from my media card (which I physically removed from my device when I rooted), but it just may be hiding somewhere. I'm using X-Plore file app, which may not be showing me everything. Is there a better file explorer app to use?
Thanks in advance!

X-plore is great. Did you give it time for the media to get scanned in? Or have you tried an app like Rescan Media? It may be that your phone just hasn't "found" the files yet. Can you see the files by putting your card into a pc?

I rooted about a month ago and still trying to find these files.
I do not have an SD Reader for microsd that I can use in the computer, unfortunately. I'm hoping the files are still there - I don't see how they could have disappeared because I physically removed my card.

I'm a fan of Ghost Commander; if you've ever used Midnight Commander on a PC you'll find the interface really familiar. I've tried a few and so far GC is the one that holds my interest.

Any good File Manager Apps

I've been learning to be pretty carefull on apps I use since I picked up my GTablet. Weird things keep happening with my movie directories. They keep deleting the movies. For instance I tried out EFile File Manager. I've been using Rockplayer which reads local sdcard (internal memory) but doesn't ready sdcard2 (my additional mini sdmc card). So I've been using sniffer to navigate to that area then play video by clicking on the file. I grabbed EFile because I wanted and app that could copy files between internal (sdcard) and the mini sdmc (sdcard2) and the standard file apps (sniffer and file manager) don't seem to be able to do that.
However, after having a process error message on EFile and then finding my video's wiped on sdcard2 I've gotten a little more carefull about what I play around with in the market store.
For regular Viewsonic G Tablet folks is there any good file managers that would be better to use for file copies between sdcards?
Thanks!
Ghost Commander is great. It has a two pane view that works really well on a tablet.
I use root explorer for my everyday stuff when on just my tab, ESfile explorer to stream from my pc, and wifi file explorer for small file transfers to my tab. I couldn't decide on just one so I got all 3. Hope this helps!

Rockplayer will see /sdcard2. You can go into settings and set sdcard2 as default and when in sdcard2 you can hit the back button to get to the root directory from which you can see sdcard, sdcard2 and usbdisk (if you have a usb flash drive plugged in)
If you are using a file manager anyways to view media from your SDCard2, putting a .nomedia file in the root of your sd card2 should stop the files from being deleted. After that, you can use Rockplayer as normal to view your vid files.
Hands down root explorer. There is an endless amount of things it can do if you know what your doing. I've tried many. Root explorer has a plain look took it but you can do the most with it. If you are an advanced android user you can't go wrong with root explorer.

I'm a stickler on file sorting settings and view settings and root explorer does a great job here. If only it also had a file directory hiearchy window so u could just jump to another folder, instead of hitting back a bunch, ah well. It suits my needs.
Thanks for the suggestions
Thanks,
I will give those a try!
There is another one called Yaffs explorer that seems to work ok as well. It has some cosmetic bugs (menus sometimes appear in French) but I have used to do things like modify build.prop without any difficulty. And (at least at the moment) it is free.

I use ES file explorer is what i use i activate the root explorer in the settings works geat with no problems

[Q] 2.3.6 Bloatware

I'm trying to remove some of the bloatware from my rooted OTA GB 2.3.6. I'm using Root Explorer and deleting select apk's and their odex file from the system/app directory. However there is one app called Rhapsody that I haven't got all the pieces, because the Rhapsody process keeps showing up in my running services list after I reboot. Both the apk and the odex file have been deleted. Anyone know what other file(s) I missed that are connected with Rhapsody?
Also, there is this rather annoying "media scanner" that runs every time that I boot my phone. Is this a must have, or can I delete it? It adds to my boot time, and if it doesn't have to be there, I want to get rid of it. And if I can delete it, what is the name of the app?

in root explorer you must delete the apk from /system/app and the associated data folder in /data/data then do a search of the whole system for 'rhapsody' as there might be little fragments left in dbdata or dalvikcache folders just delete anything with rhapsody in the name... as for the media scanning, there is a work around for this which I believe is putting a file named '.nomedia' in whatever folder you want excluded from the scan (music or pictures for instance), if you want no scanning at all put on root of SD card and that should stop it however this means you will have manually search/scan for anything you're looking for because that file will tell all apps trying to access what you're blocking that there's nothing there
blazing through on my Acer A500 via XDA app
The Media Scanner feeds Gallery and possibly the default music player. I don't think it is something you can get rid of, but I could be wrong.
There is an app called Super Manager that makes it very easy to mark folders as "noscan". I use it so all of my ebooks don't show up in the gallery.
I didn't know about the additional related app files being in the data/data. What might be the repercussions if I miss cleaning up all of them? Do they just take up memory space, or are they being executed by the system, even if the apk and odex files are gone?
As for the media scanner...I take it this is a critical system function? Is it an indexer? If the ONLY way around it is the ".nomedia" trick...and there are obvious disadvantages to using this method, then perhaps it is just best to put up with the extra boot time.
UPDATE: Just ran "Rescan Media Root" from the Market. It stops the media scan from occurring. And you can re-enable it at any time by running this app.
I also got Rhapsody stopped by searching and deleting the rest of the associated files. Thanks for the help guys!
I'm a little late here, but Rescan Media works fine to stop the scanner, and Titanium Backup has a "Chuck Norris" mode of killing bloatware.

Can you see them in on your phone at all

Is it only those two folders not showing?
Are both the internal and external SD card showing?
Are they, by some chance, marked as hidden?

In your Windows Explorer folder settings / options, there is an option to "show hidden files".
Also, you can view the info of a file or folder on your Android from a file browser.

do you have a file manager type app? can you see /sdcard/DCIM from that?
there isn't nessesarily a "sdcard/music" folder unless you created one, the media scanner will find music and photos no matter where they are stored. the files would be stored in /sdcard/download if you used the browser to download them, they may also be in folders that are created by apps if you use some mp3 downloader app.
the lack of */DCIM would be odd though. unless you use a 3rd party camera app.
Yeah I use root explorer and I can access it with no problem and on windows I already tried to show hidden files too.
Already tried going to stock.

If they're not hidden, I wonder why they don't show in Windows when the phone is plugged through USB...
Do you have a USB micro SD card reader dongle?
If so, try taking the card out of the phone and plug it directly into your computer.
If the files show, something on the phone (somehow) is messing something up.
If they don't show, there's some sort of issue with the card.
Here he is having your same problem:

They suggested deleting a .nomedia file somewhere in your sdcard and removing rom manager

You don't have to use it for the problem to show up. If it is installed it may be affecting it. Also, the .nomedia file is a hidden file so make sure show hidden files is turned on in your file explorer.

.nomedia isn't his problem.
He said everything shows fine when viewed on his phone.
He wants to view the files on his COMPUTER (pc) when the phone is linked with usb and storage mounted.
But those two folders won't show in WINDOWS.
The problem is entirely different from that thread.
Tavitos, have you tried plugging the SD Card directly to the computer with a dongle like I asked?
Posted from my Paranoia Infused Android, now featuring Butter flavored JellyBeans!
Oh I see, sorry. I misunderstood his situation.
That's quite strange though.. something similar has happened to me with my tablet before. Could somehow your usb connection be malfunctioning?
Maybe the cable or the ports?
What rom are you currently running? If the problem persists consider reflashing.

I'm running Aeon.
and the only issue is my internal. Not the external. You think it can be a driver issue?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using xda premium
If the computer is popping up a folder at all when you plug it in, it wouldn't be the driver...
So they're on the internal SD?
Hmm... On a whim, take out the External card, boot up your phone, then hook it up to the computer and see if those folders show.

Where to view external memory card contents

Good evening, I am new to the Android OS and would like know how to view what is on the external memory card.
I can see that the card is recognized but not what is on it.
Thanks
A file explorer app like 'ES file explorer' will show you in folder format. You can also get an app called 'DiskUsage' from the play store that will give you more of a visual representation with respect to file size.
Thanks for the quick reply.
Really thought I was just overlooking it.
Thanks again.
you can also put them into the adapter and into your computer.
but file managers will work if youre just on the phone.
good luck.

[Q] Music Files

OK, I think I'm at the end of my available resources so I must ask the community. Recently, I've noticed that I can't navigate to any of my music files using Astro, File Explorer, or Root Browser even. I know the files are there, they can be easily seen while plugged in via USB. I've done all of the .nomedia removal and made sure hidden files are shown in the file managers. It's driving me crazy I was trying to share a song last night and couldn't even find it using bluetooth share.
I've cleared data on the media storage app and wiped dalvik. What am I missing here? Again, songs show and play just find in my music player (rocket), they just don't appear in they folder(s) that I know they are in.
Thanks for any help on this.

Hi there! First of all stop using Rocket Player! I used to have a lot of issues with it! Try winamp or google music or buy PlayerPro which is the best player! Also Install Total Commander from play store instead Astro, File Explorer and the rest. If this doesn't help backup your phone apps and all other stuff on google account and do a factory reset. I had the same issue as you have and Factory Reset solved the problem!
Good luck
Will try your recommendations and report back. Thanks

OK, here's what I found. Total commander found the files immediately. I think because the razr has internal storage, the other file managers were defaulting to the internal storage and calling it SD storage. All of my music is on my SD card in a folder with the same name. So I guess this falls under operator error, but total commander easily differentiated between the two locations where the others did not seem to.
Thanks again for the help.
