[Q] Trans stolen. any way to track it? - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My Asus transformer was stolen today. Is there any app or way I can track it?
thanks
Todd

not unless you're really lucky.
i'm not sure, but if you get yourself another android device, active latitude to display your location, i wonder if it would cause latitude on your tab (if you even have it) to start displaying it's location.
of course, this wholy depends on your tab having google latitude (included with google maps?), have gps access, and the theif haven't done a factory reset.
I don't need a signature.

Yes there is. Go to market.android.com and install Plan B to your transformer. ( it will then email your gmail account associated with your android account once its located * very accurate aswell)do it now before the battery dies. If it works please post back!

Assuming that he has a device to install to.

you can install apps to your devices straight from the market on a web browser, however, i think you still have a confirmation prompt ( not too sure)

no there is no confirmation, but the thief will ge prompted that certain program has been installed.

sorry to disappoint you but honestly I would say the hope is slim... a factory reset will wipe out all the trails..

Slim ...But there is hope. The thief may not even know how to turn it on. Or it may be missplaced somewhere unattended.

plan b sends out the first one without prompting, so it's worth a shot. You only need to text it if you are pinging it more than once.

So far nothing. Tried Plan B, but maybe the thief hasn't turned it on and hooked it up to wifi. I'm hoping they or the person they sell it to does before the juice runs out of it. The morons didn't take the power supply!

If you used a credit card to purchase your TF, it may come with theft coverage in the first 60 days or so... check it out... you never know.

I've tried Plan B on my own and it never notified me. I don't think it works over Wifi alone.

[Q] T-Mobile snooping on my Galaxy S 4g ??????

Im not sure if this has been discussed before as I did search but cant find anything.
Today I called T-Mobile for the first time to complaint that my MMS is not working (known problem for samsung galaxy s 4g) and asking them when is the update available to fix this issue, and My SMS is in and out as well ?
I didnt tell him what program I have/downloaded on the phone since he didnt ask.
I get transfered straight to higher (level 2) technical support. He said dont touch the phone while he was checking something and the phone will reboot. The phone did reboot and the SMS get fixed.
This is what Alarmed me so much.
The tech support ( I wont publish his name here) know exactly what software I have on the phone (downloaded from the market), what is currently running, he also know I have advance task manager among other thing.
He even knew my Gmail address I use on the phone and google market account.
How is this possible ?
Is there anyway I can block this because I dont like when T-mobile snooping on my phone. If they can see the apps I downloaded on my phone and know my gmail address, know what apps currently running, Can they also access my email through my phone ?
Honestly never heard of that. Thats wild!

dude there are 30 plus million subscribers in t-mobile. unless your a celebrity or a son of bill gates or something they wont waste their time nosing on what you install or who you talk to everyday. anyway that less of your problems if you stress about that, they got your full name and ssn in file and a credit card number. if thay wanted to mess you up thats what they will go for.
I wouldn't sweat it too much, it's just like any computer service company that can push updates to your computer.. All they did was push an update and had your phone reboot.. Now if you had some terrorist shizah on there, then I'd be worried, but other than that, they've probably already forgotten about you!

last time i see this is still USA where privacy matter whether you are celebrity or not.
You wouldnt enter someone else house without asking for permission wont you (unless if you want to get arrested ) ?
The guy didnt ask for permission and I never give my approval for Tmobile to snoop into my phone.
Like I said it suprise me for the tech support to mention the apps I downloaded , running in the background and my gmail account associated to my phone and market account.
Those action has nothing to do with fixing my SMS connection ???
It doesn't surprise me at all. The OTA capabilities are there in a lot of devices, including your DSL or cable modem. Google owns everything you do on your Android phone, including your location even when you're not doing anything. Unfortunately, the Facebook mentality about privacy is winning.

I was surprised to see it on my phone as well since I hadn't installed it.. talk about bloat... why would the phone come stock with this?
They've been doing this for years, it's nothing new at all.. Notice how you call and they automatically know what kind of phone you have? Same premise. I've called multiple times with phones that were unlocked from other networks also, they could see the phone, and never cared. Take off your tinfoil hat, there's nothing to worry about.

No matter what phone you have, T-Mobile (and I'd assume AT&T) can find out what phone you are using, even if it's not a T-Mobile branded phone.
I wouldn't worry, they aren't gonna do some stupid **** with that, they just did that to repair your phone. I honestly doubt they'd risk losing a customer over a little thing like that.
Google is the one you should be worried about. They know where your phone is, exactly to the millimeter (I don't think that really works with the Vibrant though. xD).
u called to get your phone fixed didnt you? and they did just that didnt they? if you are so worried about your privacy i got a old motorola razr sitting in my closet, ill gladly trade your sgs4
Google is the devil, and will take over the planet, and join steve jobs. Put on your tin foil hats!
To further this, its done through rescue me. It is built into the kernel. On the Vibrant froyo leaks i have leaked out it is there also. We just remove the Rescue Me app.
I can remove the drivers and credentials from the kernel if people are that concerned about it. I wouldnt be though.

A sysctl to enable/disable would be my personal choice, but I have yet to build custom kernels for Android (though have for FreeBSD and OpenWRT) so I don't know how feasible that is with the source access we have.

I'm a computer repair tech. One of the first questions I'm going to ask is have you installed any new hardware or software? Most of the time I've found out software was the root problem of the issue. Not always, just Most of the time. So, it doesn't supprise me that he can see what is installed on your phone. It gives him a idea of what the problem can be. I would be more concerned what NSA or space aliens are doing with your phone.

Lost my Captivate...What Now....

So today I left my captivate in a Cab....and definitely will not be able to get it back I flashed a custom rom and forgot to reload Lookout Security or some service to track my phone, so no luck there...
Question: What should I do now. I definetly need to buy another smartphone, but the question is...which one? Should I wait for something like the Galaxy S2? (Could still be a ways from launch). I live in Canada and I am on Rogers. Should I just pick up another Captivate? Your thoughts/Suggestions.

Now, remember Plan B and use it the next time you lose the phone. It works. I didn't lose my phone, but I tried it out. GPS reception in my home is poor, so it showed the phone in the wrong room, but certainly in the correct house, close enough. It's not something you want to leave on your phone, because it sends a constant stream of text messages to your email with the location of the phone, but if you lose the phone, it will show you where it is, assuming any GPS signal can be received and it has network access.
haha, nice! if that happened to manila, goodluck! itll be sold to others right away

Stolen Nexus S

In July 2011, my Nexus S was stolen. I went to the police but they said they probably couldn't recover the device. So I just kinda let it go.
Well, a few weeks ago I found out the the phone was still connected to my Market account. This provides a bit of a security concern because I've got my credit card on my market account too, but they haven't bought anything. Just for fun, I decided to download and install Plan B to the phone, and within a few hours, I got four emails of the phone's location within 15 meters. Well, I didn't have time to bring that to the police, and that was eleven days ago. So I have a few questions:
1. I want to be able to get a more recent location because I'm afraid the police will say the location is too many days old. I know you can text "locate" or whatever to the phone but it's not my number anymore. (I know this because on my market account it says it's an AT&T phone whereas I'm on T-Mobile.)
2. Is there any way at all to remote remove the app and re install it?
3. Is there another app similar to Plan B that I can do the same thing?
4. Is there anything else I can do?
-Matthew
That really sucks. I know Lookout had an option on their site to collect the location through the internet, no phone number required. Don’t know if it's 100% sure, but it's worth a shot. Really hope you get your phone back. Good luck!

You should be able to login to your Google voice account and see which number it now forwards to. Assuming you had it on the phone and they did set it up. If not you can just text to your Google voice number and it should go through.

There really isn't much info here; who did you buy it through? Did you purchase LoJack?
There are some apps available on the play store that will transmit an emergency signal (I think its called Lookout Mobile Security) in case the device is stolen or lost.
Hopefully you can find it, or perhaps you can offer a reward for its' return. I'd post something like "Keep in mind that tablet has real-time GPS location and logging enabled. I am offering a <$$$> reward for it's safe and timely return."
It also has a proprietary charger so they'd have to go out and buy a charger from Best Buy or somewhere similar.
First things first, I'd log into your Google Dashboard and log out of your google account on the device. I think there is also an option to lock it or wipe it clean, not too sure. Also, change your google password, facebook, or any financial passwords just in case. Perhaps even alert your bank that it was stolen and that the individual may have access to your financial information in case any red flags come up.
Finally, did you have any sort of lock on the screen? Pin, passphrase, swipe, or even face unlock?
Good luck getting it back. Hopefully someone with some morals will return it.

I would imagine you could push the Lookout Mobile Security and then use its web interface to track it that way. I'm not well-versed enough in ADB to suggest how to do this, nor do I know how you could push over the web.
Possibly, use google play store and install it. The tablet will automatically install it when it gets back into wifi-range/is unlocked.
Good luck. Technology is definitely on your side.

From my experience using the tablet, I'd imagine that means it is either not turned on or not connected to internet. That program is great if you have a 3G or LTE tablet that always has connectivity, but rather limited if the person who has your tablet is only connecting via WiFi.
Keep us posted on what happens!! installing that app is a major first step.

Done and done
I suggest installing the GotYa! app or something of the sort (as long as you have some sort of lock on it). What is does is, whenever there is a failed login attempt it snaps a picture of who it is via front camera and emails it to you with the GPS location embedded. What I personally really love about it, is it keeps attempting to send the email so it if there is no connection it constantly looks for one and sends it when it haves one.
Just make sure you have Starbucks and McDonald's access point's saved ;D

Found a S3, how to get owners info?

I found a S3 today and it looks BRAND NEW. no scratches, in a case, looks perfect. So I want to be able to give it back to the owner. I went into my verizon store and they said they wouldnt do anything. It was a young guy and maybe he didnt care or maybe because its hawaii and everyone is laid back... Anyways, I want to be able to return this phone to its owner. I tried putting in random passwords for the lock screen and i got up to attempt 55 and its not asking for an email; though i dont know if it would show their email. Anyway I can hook it up USB and use a debugger and grab some kind of info? Name? Number? Email? Bypass lock screen to call one of their contacts? Any help would be great!

Is his phone rooted? If it is you could reboot, backup, and dirty flash a rom... or would that keep the lock? can't think of anything else

That would still keep the lock if all you did was wipe the caches. I had an idea of maybe using a no wipe stock image to Odin flash but wouldn't the same thing happen with the lock screen? Either way, I think runs the risk of it bootlooping and there would be less chance of getting through and calling someone. If it's rooted, maybe there is a nandroid you could restore and maybe they didn't set the lockscreen up?
