WOW, Thought I Had A Brick... - T-Mobile LG G2x

So, I get my replacement G2X today, and it works with Faux's rom and the screen bleed is "almost" non-existent. I set up Faux's rom fine, set Pimp My CPU to govern from 400Mhz to 1.5 Ghz, downloaded a couple games, started watching a youtube vid, and boom... The screen shuts off, had it plugged in to the comp for flashing purposes, so I figured it was charged. Started freaking out, I could flash recovery's just fine, but the dang thing would not turn on??? Again, I start freaking out, thinking I'm going to have to buy a new one... So, I start to walk outside to smoke a cig and think, I look through the window and I SEE LIGHT!!! All excited, i run inside to find a G2X with a "!" and a battery. Needless to say, I felt quite dumb at that moment, lol. Bull****, apparently my pc couldn't supply the power needed to run this beast at 1.5Ghz... so for those of you at 1.5Ghz, you may want to use a wall charger.
Happy Modding Everyone.

Riveting tale chap

The chip on your G2x might not support underclocking to 400mHz which is why it might have turned off. Has nothing to do with it being on your computer charger.
Cool story bro.

Similar but different
Had G2x for a while loved it for it. Got throtlled by Tmobile Rooted Then thought cm7 im a noob but whatever. Used You tube vid for both. Wiped went drop cm7 and google apps. Nothing to flash . Nothing . Went back to (dell netbook that i thought only had the recovery rooted phone flash) search forums. Realized needed to flash and drop both zips into recovery. Dont know how noob that is . Took about two Newport 100s though . I know im being lazy but can I drop the 1.8 kernal in thier too? Love to Mod... Now

okay. so i overclocked my wizzy to 312 right... for the past few days it was doing good.. but today.. i noticed that it wouldnt automatically turn off even though i had the timers set... then i noticed that the ilauncher battery indicator was blank.. then i noticed the battery status indicator said -1%... i soft reset, hard reset, uninstalled and everything i could... ok.. so now here i am.. no clue where my battery is at... my device is now stock.. meaning nothing installed but battery status... and im not overclocking. any ideas on how to get 'er back to normal?
try draining the battery completely, til your wizard dies, then recharge it. This will 'cycle' the battery. You may have to perform this procedure a few times.
I had a Wizard for a bit (it was the T-Mo US MDA G4 variant). I recall that whenever I tried overclocking beyond 240MHz it would be OK for quite a bit then always ended in a horrible freeze up! I darn near bricked the device... Actually, I really thought it was completely done for one time! I believe I managed to get out of that particular hole by putting it into bootloader mode (can't remember the key combo to do it but I am certain it is in the XDA-dev wiki) then reflashing the ROM. There are a couple of different special programmer modes that special key combos can put it in, and I remember somehow trying them and managing to jog it into life just enough to reflash with the stock ROM. Thankfully, that saved the device (but not my data) but it was a close one!
I can quite understand you wanting overclock to the max. Yep. there are many warnings not to overclock too high or one risks frying the Wizard... I ignored them too! The Wizard is a nice device but the 200MHz processor is a little bit of a weak point (makes for good battery life though, which I am sure was the intention) Best of luck. Hopefully you can get up and running again. Assuming you do (fingers crossed) I suggest trying to live with 240MHz and if that really doesn't cut it for you, maybe start saving those pennies for your next phone!
The battery drain-out suggestion posted sounds good too... whatever can get you up and running is good at this point!
Sorry to bump the thread, just thought of something else. I can't recall if the Wizard has a reserve power battery hidden away inside it, but for what it's worth... another time I had a device where the screen stopped resonding completely and hard resets did not help. Looked like it was warranty service time for sure. Then I tried taking the battery out and leaving it out overnight, then putting it back and doing a hard reset. Hey presto, screen worked, no service required.
The battery cycling suggestion is basically the same idea, I am just adding it may be worth leaving it completely drained and without power for a few hours before recharging so that any charge stored in the device can completely clear. Once again... good luck!
I had the same problem. Just to see if it's exacly the same check if there is info about radio when wizard is starting (gsm ....). If not just flash your wizard with radio (in my case only 1.31 worked).

nope.. i missed no warnings... i heard every single one.. but there were mixes of stories of some who had success at 312 and i felt i might be one of the chosen.... apparently not.. so i'm at work now. the battery died completely last night on me.. and none of my charging options at home worked (USB plugged into the computer).. i got the orange light for a minute or two... then it went out compltely.. haven't seen the boot screen since last night.. so now i'm at work with my charger going to work on the batter.. it's been about 20 mins and still no light.. if not.. i'll call cingular with a "warranty request". *smiles*

Reminds me of a "friend" (not me) of a "friend" (not me) who had a Wizard (not mine) and attempted to do an antenna boost thingy (not mine/I wouldn't) and totally botched it (I'd never even try that) then stuck it back together with some glue (despicable/I was shocked!) and returned it to the store.
I hope I made it clear this was a friend of my friend and absoutely was not me? Oh, and I tried to stop them! ...yeah, that's how it was....

Did you tried the "pull out the batttery before pluging in the charger and after a few seconds inserting the battey" thing ?

Yeah, that's the ticket!!! LMAO!!!
i feel so horribly guilty.. i'm so sorry. i promise.. after this time i'll never do it again.. we swears it.. on.. on.. The Precious!! yeah.. i got my replacement today.. problem is... STILL NOT WORKING.. i feel like a fool.. the whole time it was the battery and not the phone.. so now i'm faced with a delima.. now i can go and try to get my battery replaced which the local stores say they don't have.. so i'd have to take a long hike to the local exchange spot. i'm going to send the phone back though.. since it's the battery.. but a valuable lesson has been learned.. i'm going back to wm5 and relocking the phone.. having the new roms is great... but if something goes wrong.. i'd like to have my support.
Well, in a way that is good news it turned out to be the battery, apart the fact that getting your hands on another one sounds like at least a mild nuisance.
I am stating the obvious here, and I am sure your have already mulled this over. It sounds like the Wizard isn't really meeting your needs. I choose to have a large contacts database and other stuff on my phone. In combination with the 200MHz CPU, the Wizard wasn't really the right device for me. I am not criticizing the Wizard, just saying it wan't right for me.
An upgrade to the Hermes or somthing similar might be a good bet. But I know it's all more cash... and quite a bit of it too! Again, this is obvious stuff and I am sure you have considered this already.
For what it is worth I would do much the same in your situation. I'd consider this a close call and stick with the stock ROM for a bit, at least while I thought over my options and made sure everything is definitely OK with a new battery.
Best of luck

remedied... got my hands on another battery.. you guys are great. thanks for all the advice.. i'm actually considering the 8525.(it's been on my mind) but that extra cash... i don't know.. the wife and i are considering another little one.. soooo.. perhaps. Thanks again everyone!
Best of luck if you go for another little one. Kids are totally great and much more important that any phone! Now let me see what I would do with my hard earned cash, give even more money to Cingular or spend it on my family hmmmm.... I'd give it to Cingular. NOT!
The way I personally see it is your Wizard is a great phone and, hey, we all know that give it just a bit longer there is gonna be some another device out we all want instead of a Hermes/8525 or whatever takes our personal fancy! That is just how it is for us gadget freaks! Post-poning an upgrade for as long as one can stand it is often a win-win really!
Maybe you are right to keep you Wiz more to stock specs and get the support and make it last out for a bit. I know the overclock wasn't the problem after all, but I would imagine that cranking it high might at least shorten its life. Personally I think I would at least roll back on that one. 312 was pretty darn speedy! (Impressive, but gosh, that is seriously turbo!)
I spent bunch of cash on my Trinity and have just hopped to Cingy to get the 3G. But to be honest, I don't even pick up the 3G in lots of places yet. I really like the phone and everything. But was it really worth the money...?Truthfully? No. It was an absurd purchase. I just decided not to think about that and buy it anyway!
Anyhow, good luck with everything all round

Terrible Battery Life & Need Serious Help

Hey guys. I'm trying VERY hard to understand this, but I can't make sense of it at all.
I'm coming to this phone from the MT4G and besides this one having a dual-core cpu and being made by LG...it's not TOO much different from that phone in terms of specs. However I am having horrible battery life. Like I've actually sat and watched the battery drain by 10% after only being on for 2min. And this was from a complete charge w/ phone being off.
So now I'm wondering if I've maybe done something wrong when I rooted my phone because no one else seems to be experiencing this at all.
I followed all of the steps located here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1054492
Following the set of directions for the installation of "CWM 4.0.0.2".
I'm also using the EaglesBlood v1.3 ROM located here (No other mods):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1124522
Now I've made this post because last night, before I went to sleep, my phone was fully charged and so I took it off of the charger. At 2a.m. it was at 100%. At 8:30a.m. (6.5hrs later) I got woken up from my house phone. My phone was right by my head on my pillow and furiously hot. I attempted to turn it on, but it refused. I thought the phone burned out while I was sleeping, but when I plugged it into the charger...guess what showed the LG logo?
So how, in 6.5hrs, could this phone go from 100% to being dead WITHOUT use? Did I do something wrong with my root process? Was I supposed to do something else?
I've never experienced this kind of behavior from a phone ever. And I doubt that I need to be living on a charger with it either.
I rooted my phone recently...used NVflash and stuff...but I HAVENT loaded cm7 or anything on it...i have, however, loaded some launchers and customized my phone alot...so with all the launchers and custom screens running my phone does die quicker...but not at the rate you say yours does...have you tried resetting to stock system and the root it again?

No....this phone does have higher usage rates that the phone you come from. But, it should not be as bad as you indicate.
Check on this forum for threads about Batteries....there are indications that some bad batteries are in play here. You may want to follow up with TMobile to replace your battery. Some have invested in OEM batteries and gotten more steady battery performance.
You may also wish to try some factory resets with your device, just to seeif your performance may change. You may find some relief there.
If nothing works, you may wish to do some application management and see what is using your battery. Work with the settings on those apps to make sure they are constantly checking for data. Another common battery drain is signal. If you're in a weak 4g area, try setting to 2g for a day or 2, to see if that helps.
The programs others mention like setcpu, might be ok. But, speaking only for myself, have not been able to figure out how they work, and explanations here, are over my head. So I choose to not use them until I better understand them.
With a stock setup, you should see better battery life. Having to change roms, to achieve that....indicates there is something wrong.

[Q] Hard Bricked? Sidekick 4g

Soo I have a big problem,
My sidekick 4g suddenly shut off and directly went into Download Bootloader. It would only stay in that window for about 3 seconds then restart. So I tried doing Odin but it would never stay in download mode long enough. After a while, the phone stopped turning on and now it does not even charge. I believe I have hard bricked the phone. When I leave it on the charger. I see no indication that it is charging but the battery gets warm. Is there any hope for me to fix this phone?
Please let me know ASAP. Thanks!

Does the device even show up as a USB vendor/product id? See that with `lsusb` on Linux or the Device Manager on Windows.
It might be worth trying ayoteddy's FOOL PROOF WAY TO GET INTO DOWNLOAD MODE here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1186954
Perhaps if you trigger the phone to enter download mode that way, it won't just continually reboot...
Beyond that, I think you'll be looking at hardware-level fixes. If the phone isn't literally fried, it can almost certainly be repaired with JTAG. But that would involve a JTAG interface which I am guessing you don't already have.
You might be able to find someone who will JTAG for you for free, or for a fee. A local phone repair shop might have this capability.
If you're damn good with a soldering iron, or have a friend who is, there's also AdamOutler's "UnbrickableMod":
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1347984
That mod is not for the feint of heart, you need to take the phone almost entirely apart and do soldering work within the area of a grain of rice... but it is possible.
But all the options assume that the only problem with the device is a bad flash -- damaged boot loader, bad kernel/recovery, etc. The way you describe your phone's demise, a hardware failure certainly seems like a possibility.
Good luck, I hope your device is not dead.
FWIW, SK4G goes for ~$100-200 on eBay these days depending on condition. Locally you could probably find lower prices.
Wow thanks for all the info but i tried ayoteddy. Since the phone doesnt even power on , i cant do what teddy says. And no, after a few failed odins, the comp doesn't even see the phone. But that's also because the phone doesn't turn on. I even put a charged bat. Still no go

It really sounds like a hardware failure.
If you are committed to trying everything to rescue your particular device, you could double down and try a new battery. You risk wasting whatever money you spend on it, of course.
If I recall correctly, the SK4G can't operate properly without some battery current, even when plugged into USB. And the other symptoms seem to leave the door open on battery problems -- sudden power down, brief signs of life which eventually cease, hot battery. The sudden failure of a lithium battery would hardly be unusual.
I have seen an issue very similar to this before. It turned out to be a loose connection inside the phone. Might want to disassemble and reassemble carefully to ensure that the connections are secure. Youtube has dis-assembly videos to guide you. You don't have to completely disassemble the phone, just til you reach the main board and secure the connections to it. If you don't feel like you can hand the task of dis-assembly you could always search for a local phone repair business, or even computer repair shop (they often do some phone repairs). Hope this helps
Hey there, I am trying to fix a SK4G with the exact same problems... download mode will show up, but then the screen will go blank again. I'm gonna look into what blk2dr suggested... did you ever fix yours, OP?
root? so Warranty it, not saying its the most "ethical way"
out of curiosity what was the last, well as samsung would put it, hac...ERRRR unsupported warranty voiding modification known to us as upgrade/flash eg. via cwm odin rom app add on modem kernel etc. that was done to the ol SK? or is it just straight up faulty craftsmanship from samsung...nooooo on a SK4g??? is that possible? lol moving a rom around from folder to root of sd once (zip prev passed md5 check) my 2nd or was it 3rd t839 had a lil hiccup that i didnt realize at the time made my custom Roms zip like 47kb smaller then it previously was and should of been, when flashing is 2nd nature and ur just moving it within the same sd card its already checked out on the md5 sum and ur dealing with a 200+/-mb file, whos gonna notice that minor change? to make a really long story just kinda long, into voodoo cwm flash, let it marinate... phone ran great for 4 days, then i decided i was going to clear cache davlik fix permish and reboot...yea went into cwm wiped wiped and half way thru fix permish phone crashed rebooted back into recov, when i tried to reboot sys it had your same exact issue. DL mode for just a second...then all black yet slightly backlit screen. could never get it to stay long enuff to odin back to stock, fullproof DL mode was a no go and of course the battery died, wouldnt recharge. i played dumb went to tmo store dude tesed phone with new batt my batt in other sk etc etc...anyways he charged my battery up enuff it flared back into dl mode for a few sec...my fix? hours and days headin into weeks of jackin with this thing i went with my cure all root REUPwarranty fix...flash a bad freakin bootloader thru odin and kill it once ad for all, DL mode only needs to be on about 4 sec, not long enough to go back to stock rom but long enuff to kill that B. prefered bootloader is i9000 haha works like a champ everytime to every rooted phone that had issues i needed a warranty exchange on(only been 4) seeing how i get a new phone every 3months on avg and always pay full price the ratio is tiny. yeah i know the trickle down effect raising costs from manufacture in long run yadayada. all is true, but i figure ive been kicked in the groin so many times by samsung,lg,moto, htc etc they can eat 1 every now and then. as a tmo employee in 07/08 i paid 500 upfront for the mda that got back ordered for 6 months had 2 bad dead spots in the touch screen within a month and screen went completely white in 3mnths. some employee/warranty fine print screwed me out of a new phone. and dont even get me started on the sidekick. 399 bucks for a phone that basically got abandoned 3 months later cuz it was junk compared to what it should be and breaks in high quanities. theyll still tax u 20 bucks and make u keep ur old battery and cover charger etc so im not losin any sleep, for real kill it for good, run it to the store get ur new err rebuilt refurb SK4g in 2 days then save up for a t989 s2 dl gmote/spashtop and poweramp on ur SK4g and let her roll as a wireless keyboard/mousepad for ur pc and let the voodoo and Pamp rock as a killer mp3 player. thats all the T-urd-839 is really good for anyways, oh yea and a mediocre bt controller for playin games on my S2's lol do the warranty, its samsung/TMOs fault for lettin this junk product get released, abandoning it and overcharging so many of us. Just do it, do it lol
pull battery, connect usb, hold power, volume up, volume down, camera, and tackpad and insert battery. It should FORCE the phone into download mode.
try it lol~

[Q] can overclocking burn Nexus S beyond repair?

Hi guys, Sorry to bring you my phone troubles but It seems I have smoked my phone and you are the best source of knowledge I know of.
I have had a nexus s (gsm) [i9020a] model for a year and recently rooted it. Then I installed system tuner and overclocked it. It was fine until I got an OTA update (to 4.1.2 ) two days ago. I should have known not to accept the update after a root but I did. Since then I keep getting freeze phone into the X graphics you usually get when you boot up. So today I further juiced it up using System |Tuner, uping values I had no ideas about Soon there after I got another crash, and lock and this time when i pulled the battery and replaced it, nothing comes up. Dark! . No power or any sign of activity with or without charger. Have I totally ruined the phone? Anything I can do?
Thanks for your help .
You can if you use too high oc with high voltage, for a longer period, like in months. I wouldnt say that caused your phone to die but it could be your phone couldnt take the oc at all.
Sent from SpeedMachine i9023
Overclocking will rarely break any hardware.
Increasing the voltage though is playing with fire.
Nevertheless, I believe what killed your Nexus S is the famous battery pull. You wouldn't be the only person that has killed their phone doing this, you can look around the forums...

Phone randomly shuts down

Everything was fine on the phone until I tried out AOKP 4.2.2 alpha 2 a week ago, When I had the rom installed the phone would randomly shut down. I thought it was because the rom was not stable enough so I flashed CM9. On CM9 the phone would shut off every five minutes it was that bad. I then installed Miktouch 0.7 and the shutdowns for the most part stopped. The phone will shut down now and again and it always shuts down after I use youtube for 10+ minutes or use the camera for several minutes.
I tried to revert to stock and see if that fixed anything but when I boot into the bootloader it looks for PG59IMG and says no image found and nothing happens. I got the PG59IMG from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1878329
Any help is appreciated.
I swear it sounds mechanical...maybe battery related. Just starting out of the blue like that and it being cross ROM and all. It should just flash that file automatically from hboot though. Are you sure you copied the file to the root of your SD card? Did you relock your bootloader with *fastboot oem lock* before running it? Sometimes it doesn't like it if the usb cable is still plugged in. (for some weird reason) If you're still S-On, did you flast the boot.img file thru adb with *fastboot flash boot boot.img* after flashing your ROM?
Oh yeah, you won't be able to flash that PG59IMG if it is newer than the hboot version listed in your bootloader right now. That is until you get S-Off with the wire trick.
Check some of that stuff out & get back to us.
I agree it sounds mechanical, most likely a bad battery.
I confronted similar behavior over the weekend and a testing with a new battery allowed me to point a finger at an older, aftermarket battery as causing the shutdowns.
Sorry for the delay in the reply - real life got in the way.
I thought it was also mechanical but the shut downs are MUCH less frequent in Miktouch than on ICS roms so I thought it may have to do partially with the software.
I'm S-off, used the revolutionary method years ago. Never issued the "fastboot oem lock" command and I've never done anything related to fastboot. The stock image was in the root of the sd card.
When the phone does shut down it doesn't matter if take out the battery or do anything else, I can't get the phone to start back up until 20 mins later or so. The phone will certainly shut down if I use the camera or use youtube so if there is a way I can grab a log or something that could help let me know
I've had very similar issues, since installing a CM 10 alpha, and now on 10.1. The first couple weeks when I first rooted/flashed CM 10 were fine, but then it started rebooting one day, and never has stopped. Stock battery, no reboots prior to that, S-On, flashed the boot.img for each rom, and it's doing this with both CM 10 and CM 10.1. Does that also sound like battery, since it's the stock battery which has always worked fine? Also, it seems heat/intensity related - if I'm playing a game, using GPS, or talking a long time, that's when it tends to happen, and then it tends to happen right at/near the lock screen for a while after that until it's cooled down (perhaps that screams battery, but since it always restarts fine/has power I would have guessed it had to do with the processor or kernel). Thanks in advance for any advice!
Could be the battery...
I agree with the other posters. I had the experience of lots of random reboots a while back when I was working my way through sverhagen's 9.1r3+ ROMs. But, it just turned out that my stock battery had given up the ghost. Swapping to one of the gold batteries fixed the problem. I tried the stock battery in the interim for a brief stint and switched back to the gold, as the stock battery still caused random reboots. So maybe its time for a battery refresher

Yeah....the little suckers are on a power trip I think.
i've been having some shut down issues for a while, on different ROMs so I don't think it's that. whenever i'm using it i don't have any issues (unless it's a known ROM thing, that's separate). even during the day when i'm not using it, it hasn't shut down or anything. the issue is that a lot of times when i wake up, i find that the phone has been shut down. i charge it overnight. so, my best guess is that i should stop doing that, maybe the battery is bad, it can't handle that for that long?
idk any ideas would be helpful. i'm considering buying a gold battery anyway
Did you try the new Battery ?
I was have random shutdown and lockup problems. The phone would lock with a blank screen and I'd have to pull the battery to get it back.
Am running SilverL's CM 10.1. I might be a coincidence, but I backed off on the aggressiveness of the CPU settings (in the performance menu) and the problem went away.
I'm currently running a min/max = 128/1242.
I'm trying not to post a new thread so I'll post my very similar problem.
I got this phone about a year ago. I put Miktouch on it and was experiencing random shut downs all the time. I believe I posted on here and I can't remember the responses. As the mytouch q kinda sucks and I want a solid phone. I gave it another attempt this time with CM 9.1.0. When I used the camera once it shut down and restarted I think. Then I got a solid few days before it started going wanky again. Today alone I've had like 5 restarts. From what I've searched around it seems the problem here is the battery? This is stock battery and I got the phone used off ebay. I think I used stock rom like a week before rooting and putting Miktouch on it.
edit: For some odd reason my background also changed. Charged the phone backup. It turned off again.
If you've flashed any ROMs here to the MyTouch Q then that's your problem. It isn't this phone. These forums are for the HTC MyTouch 4G Slide. A much more powerful phone with a different manufacturer & motherboard. If you have S-Off go to their forums, wipe...wipe...wipe & reflash one of their ROMs. You're lucky you're not bricked.

I know. I'm talking about two different phones in the same post. I bought this phone (Mytouch 4g Slide) last summer but shortly started having problems. As I didn't want to deal with it I went back to my slowly dying touchscreen on my G2. When that finally died (touchscreen) I just bought a mytouch q as I wanted a phone that worked. This was my first new phone in a long time.
I am NOT trying to install any roms for the MyTouch Q on the MT4GS or the other way around.
S-OFF should be off on the 4G slide. Pretty sure my mytouch Q is still rooted though. It sucked at running CM 9
Sorry. Somehow I got confused. That being the case, it sure does sound like some type of a hardware issue instead of a software one.

Yeah, from what I read it could be a battery problem. Going to go with this Anker battery as its the only reliable battery I can find that doesn't cost an arm and a leg.
Anker Battery
Yeah I'd start with a new battery myself, either a new OEM or an anker, both are cheap on eBay. Also look for a post where me and weekends were discussing the emmc of this phone, bear in mind I have zero proof, but I got a suspicion there may be multiples they put in here and some worse than others.
If the battery won't work then I would repartition the whole dang thing, either by returning to stock and the rerooting and resoff, or by at least flashing the same bootloader on top of the one you currently have.
Just some ideas, but if you want a better idea of what's causing your issue, pull a logcat

I have a theory of whats causing it. If I extensively use the phone the battery warms up which gets to the point it shuts down. Thus if the battery is still too warm and I turn the phone on then it will just keep shutting down. Of course I can't do this until I'm home for the day as I'm out and about this weekend.
edit:
I used the Revolutionary way to turn s-off which is permanent.
I get random shut downs constantly. Usually atleast 3-4 times a day. It's pretty nerve racking. I honestly don't think it's the battery, I've experienced this issue on three different batteries and it happened on all of them. It's not ROM related either as I've tried probably 15 different ROMs (stock based, ICS, JB) and they all have this issue.
My buddy who has a Sensation also has this issue on his phone. Maybe it's a problem for that phone too since they are pretty similar?
