Soo I have a big problem,
My sidekick 4g suddenly shut off and directly went into Download Bootloader. It would only stay in that window for about 3 seconds then restart. So I tried doing Odin but it would never stay in download mode long enough. After a while, the phone stopped turning on and now it does not even charge. I believe I have hard bricked the phone. When I leave it on the charger. I see no indication that it is charging but the battery gets warm. Is there any hope for me to fix this phone?
Please let me know ASAP. Thanks!

Does the device even show up as a USB vendor/product id? See that with `lsusb` on Linux or the Device Manager on Windows.
It might be worth trying ayoteddy's FOOL PROOF WAY TO GET INTO DOWNLOAD MODE here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1186954
Perhaps if you trigger the phone to enter download mode that way, it won't just continually reboot...
Beyond that, I think you'll be looking at hardware-level fixes. If the phone isn't literally fried, it can almost certainly be repaired with JTAG. But that would involve a JTAG interface which I am guessing you don't already have.
You might be able to find someone who will JTAG for you for free, or for a fee. A local phone repair shop might have this capability.
If you're damn good with a soldering iron, or have a friend who is, there's also AdamOutler's "UnbrickableMod":
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1347984
That mod is not for the feint of heart, you need to take the phone almost entirely apart and do soldering work within the area of a grain of rice... but it is possible.
But all the options assume that the only problem with the device is a bad flash -- damaged boot loader, bad kernel/recovery, etc. The way you describe your phone's demise, a hardware failure certainly seems like a possibility.
Good luck, I hope your device is not dead.
FWIW, SK4G goes for ~$100-200 on eBay these days depending on condition. Locally you could probably find lower prices.
Wow thanks for all the info but i tried ayoteddy. Since the phone doesnt even power on , i cant do what teddy says. And no, after a few failed odins, the comp doesn't even see the phone. But that's also because the phone doesn't turn on. I even put a charged bat. Still no go

It really sounds like a hardware failure.
If you are committed to trying everything to rescue your particular device, you could double down and try a new battery. You risk wasting whatever money you spend on it, of course.
If I recall correctly, the SK4G can't operate properly without some battery current, even when plugged into USB. And the other symptoms seem to leave the door open on battery problems -- sudden power down, brief signs of life which eventually cease, hot battery. The sudden failure of a lithium battery would hardly be unusual.
I have seen an issue very similar to this before. It turned out to be a loose connection inside the phone. Might want to disassemble and reassemble carefully to ensure that the connections are secure. Youtube has dis-assembly videos to guide you. You don't have to completely disassemble the phone, just til you reach the main board and secure the connections to it. If you don't feel like you can hand the task of dis-assembly you could always search for a local phone repair business, or even computer repair shop (they often do some phone repairs). Hope this helps
Hey there, I am trying to fix a SK4G with the exact same problems... download mode will show up, but then the screen will go blank again. I'm gonna look into what blk2dr suggested... did you ever fix yours, OP?
root? so Warranty it, not saying its the most "ethical way"
out of curiosity what was the last, well as samsung would put it, hac...ERRRR unsupported warranty voiding modification known to us as upgrade/flash eg. via cwm odin rom app add on modem kernel etc. that was done to the ol SK? or is it just straight up faulty craftsmanship from samsung...nooooo on a SK4g??? is that possible? lol moving a rom around from folder to root of sd once (zip prev passed md5 check) my 2nd or was it 3rd t839 had a lil hiccup that i didnt realize at the time made my custom Roms zip like 47kb smaller then it previously was and should of been, when flashing is 2nd nature and ur just moving it within the same sd card its already checked out on the md5 sum and ur dealing with a 200+/-mb file, whos gonna notice that minor change? to make a really long story just kinda long, into voodoo cwm flash, let it marinate... phone ran great for 4 days, then i decided i was going to clear cache davlik fix permish and reboot...yea went into cwm wiped wiped and half way thru fix permish phone crashed rebooted back into recov, when i tried to reboot sys it had your same exact issue. DL mode for just a second...then all black yet slightly backlit screen. could never get it to stay long enuff to odin back to stock, fullproof DL mode was a no go and of course the battery died, wouldnt recharge. i played dumb went to tmo store dude tesed phone with new batt my batt in other sk etc etc...anyways he charged my battery up enuff it flared back into dl mode for a few sec...my fix? hours and days headin into weeks of jackin with this thing i went with my cure all root REUPwarranty fix...flash a bad freakin bootloader thru odin and kill it once ad for all, DL mode only needs to be on about 4 sec, not long enough to go back to stock rom but long enuff to kill that B. prefered bootloader is i9000 haha works like a champ everytime to every rooted phone that had issues i needed a warranty exchange on(only been 4) seeing how i get a new phone every 3months on avg and always pay full price the ratio is tiny. yeah i know the trickle down effect raising costs from manufacture in long run yadayada. all is true, but i figure ive been kicked in the groin so many times by samsung,lg,moto, htc etc they can eat 1 every now and then. as a tmo employee in 07/08 i paid 500 upfront for the mda that got back ordered for 6 months had 2 bad dead spots in the touch screen within a month and screen went completely white in 3mnths. some employee/warranty fine print screwed me out of a new phone. and dont even get me started on the sidekick. 399 bucks for a phone that basically got abandoned 3 months later cuz it was junk compared to what it should be and breaks in high quanities. theyll still tax u 20 bucks and make u keep ur old battery and cover charger etc so im not losin any sleep, for real kill it for good, run it to the store get ur new err rebuilt refurb SK4g in 2 days then save up for a t989 s2 dl gmote/spashtop and poweramp on ur SK4g and let her roll as a wireless keyboard/mousepad for ur pc and let the voodoo and Pamp rock as a killer mp3 player. thats all the T-urd-839 is really good for anyways, oh yea and a mediocre bt controller for playin games on my S2's lol do the warranty, its samsung/TMOs fault for lettin this junk product get released, abandoning it and overcharging so many of us. Just do it, do it lol
pull battery, connect usb, hold power, volume up, volume down, camera, and tackpad and insert battery. It should FORCE the phone into download mode.
try it lol~

Hey guys.. So I've had my inspire for about 2 or 3 months now, and this thing is driving me apeshhh. Here is why...
For a few weeks now, the phone would randomly restart in the middle of doing something, always random. Sometimes while writing a msg in the stock facebook app. Sometimes when browsing market, sometimes when browsing using the web browser. Today I wanted to download Astro to see if the music I put on the phone went to external or internal SD. As soon as the download finished, the phone restarted. After it booted back up I looked through apps, and it never installed. I went back to market and searched it, pulled it up, and it shows installing.... let it sit for 5 minutes... nothing. Restarted, same thing. Pulled the battery... same thing... I can't cancel it, or try again. It will now no longer install anything else.
I figured maybe it needs to download something that it just doesn't have the network speed to use, and trying turning on wifi. IT WONT EVEN TURN ON. Under the settings menu to turn it on, it says error. When i tap on it, the error msg just goes off then comes back right away.
Anybody else experience this? I really wish SOMEBODY would come out with a decent f**king phone on the AT&T network.... I guess I can now add HTC to the list of people that can't build a decent phone. Just below Samsung... (What a POS line of phones they have released).
Anyway, phone is stock, not rooted, nothing turned off, completely stock.
How does the warrenty work now? I bought the phone outright, cash, $500... for this....
Thanks for any help.
Could be your phone mate. I've had this phone maybe about three months and haven't experienced those issues. Just might be a lemon you have. Where did you purchase the phone?
Sent from my Inspire 4G using XDA Premium App
I bought the phone at an authorized AT&T retailer store. The kind you find in common shopping strips.
Try to see if they will give you a replacement

Back up your stuff and factory reset. If that doesn't work then either Root it and try a different ROM or get a replacement phone.
You might want to look at the thread in here about random shutdowns. It looks like the batteries on these phones can be the culprit. My phone randomly shutdown, sometimes restarted. I thought it was a ROM I had loaded at first. The problem got progressively worse no matter what ROM I used. It would do it maybe once a day & then within less than 3 weeks I have to keep it plugged in all the time. It happened when I opened a power-intensive app like navigation or a game. The battery is covered under warranty.
This issue seems to be rather uncommon, but it does exist.
Nothing compared to what Captivate owners went through.
Lemons do happen, but as suggested, I'd try another battery first. If that doesn't solve the problem, there shouldn't be any issue with getting a warranty replacement.
And that warranty replacement will, with near certainty, be a good one. Again, unlike the Captivate.
I've had mine for about 3 months with none of these issues. HTC phones for me have been great. Even their customer service and support if their products. And I have had Samsung, motorolla, and LG none at the same level of build quality. If you continue having problems get in touch with the HTC support they will help if not let u know if you can get a replacement.

I am a former captivate owner. That phone was so bad that it destroyed it's own internal memory. Every app continously force close, every process, upon startup one day. Restored a backup, got nothing, reflashed, got nothing, mounted it and formated it then ran a memory checking utility on my computer with it, and it showed like 46% of the sectors being bad, after then 2nd test somewhere in the high 50s. I promtly punched in the screen and folded the phone in half, and tore it into 2 pieces... So i think that may be why I'm relatively patient with this phone.. (that was also my 3rd captivate replacement). (Debating using a picture of the phone as-is in a DIY to fixing captivates and post it in that forum... get all your frustration out and buy a new phone.. ha ha.)
I will call HTC and see talk to a rep, maybe they know more about the problem and will be able to determine whether the phone or the battery is at fault.
Also, factory reset did not fix the wifi problem. Instead of immediately going back to error under it's status, and spent about 10 seconds trying to connect, then came up with error. This leads me to believe it's hardware related.
I will most likely push for a replacement phone then. I do have a concern with that though... My phone has never gotten wet, and only has a small indication of falling out of my pocket while sitting in a stadium chair (maybe a 12 inch drop onto concrete). Will this void my warrenty? The scar left behind is hardly noticeable, but if they looked for it, it will be seen. Another thing is, when I pull my battery cover off, there are 2 screws along the side, one is covered by a sticker that reads VOID, black sticker with white text. Is that some kind of indicator of water damage? I'm more familiar with white stickers turning red or pink from water damage... and as said, this phones never been wet.
Thanks again for the help.
At&t is usually good about replacing defective phones and will be faster than dealing with htc. You obviously have experience with at&t warranty having owned a captivate.

Those stickers are intact right? As long as their intact and not "punched in," which would indicate a screwdriver has penetrated in order to get the phone open, you should be good, as far as that's concerned.
Uhh well bad luck for you... I dont think this is a common problem...

My phone wont turn on after installing titanmim backup it was working ok and had about 50% battery left but thenit suddenly went off and now wont turn on.
Can it boot into recovery? What happens when you plug it into a charger and try turn it on?
It wont boot in to recovery mode. Am on my way home now so soon as am in am going to try and plug it in to the charger and see but before I installed titanmim backup it had about 50% battery still in it
Just tuck it out of my pocket and the screen feels warm to the touch
Try it when you get home and see how it goes.
Just got in and plugged it in to the charger and it's not coming on the charger light isn't even coming on
How the PC recognize it in the device manager?
At the moment my pc isn't picking it up
Pull the battery, put it back in, then try to power on.

Tried that tried 2 different battery's and 2 different chargers and 2 different laptops
Did you try and turn the phone on without a battery in? I read somewhere that that may help discharge the final bit of power in the phone, but it's probably bull crap.
So no computer sees it at all? Have you ever run ADB or FASTBOOT commands with your computer? I ask because I want to make sure you have proper drivers installed and everything.
The next thing I would do is start downloading a RUU of your liking. I say that becasue it may come down to trying that out, and the download takes a while. Here's a link to the thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1074559
Any other info you can provide like is it stock, rooted, what ROM, etc. would be helpful.
It rooted and running OrDroid rom from here, It as been running great till tonight when I tried to install titanium back and it just went off with no life in it at all
Sorry to say but it sounds like a lot like what happened to me. My first Sensation just died on me one day. Have a read about it in this thread.

Yeah that is a real shame about the Galaxy 10.1. I have actually been thinking about getting one of those myself. I don't know about the Galaxy 10.1, but my Accer Iconia A500 tablet has a slot for a SD card that has a peice of molded plastic covering the slot. And it is work going on to be able to use it like a phone. Terrible how OEMs lock out a feature like that
Anyway back on topic, if you are interested I can give you contact info to someone that can replace the mainboard for you at a reasonable price. That would be cheaper than buying another device I think. Just PM me if you are interested.
Am in the UK mate
Think ill take my chances and try and sending if off to HTC for repair
Just booked it in now so hopefully they will fix it
Same thing happen to me the other day. It shut off and wouldn't come on. Thankfully I am paying extra for extended warranty which is basically lifetime warranty and got it replaced.

How much did you pay for extended warranty*
Got a email from Htc saying even though my phone is in warranty they want a £145 to fix it put not because of the fault but because at the top of the screen there a little crack and even though I said that's not why its broke they still want me to pay it. So I don't now if its worth paying that much to fix it or count my loss's. Isn't there any other way to fix a bricked phone
Just as the title says. A couple of days ago, I flashed the MOAR rom, everything was great with it up until last night, when I went to look at my phone and it was doing this. I cannot restart the phone using the "simulated battery removal" method of holding vol down + power button. Any ideas? Do I actually need to take this sucker apart?
Let the battery die completely is the first step. Plug it in to charge holding the buttons to start Download Mode/Recovery. If that works try (if you boot to recovery) and wiping the cache/davlik to see if that does anything. If not then a factory reset and then if not a full odin.
I'm under the impression that it's using very, very minimal battery. Thus, letting it drain may take days. But you may be right, maybe I'll just have to live without it for now.
To speed the process up, you could take the device apart and manually unplug the battery from the board. Its not the most difficult device to take apart, but that is coming from someone that takes apart phones for a living. If you're willing, and have the tools available, that would be the quickest way to get the phone to at least boot into recovery (if it will) and try an reflashing MOAR/stock.
edit: and you could also check and see if the board connection to the display is not loose as well if you go this route. If you do not feel comfortable, and you have Total Equipment Protection, you could take it in to a Sprint Service & Repair location and they can take it apart as well (or at least should be able to). I cannot speak for their level of competence when it comes to taking apart devices, but all of my technicians are well aware of how to take the Note 5 apart without causing any damage.
Get an usb otg cable and charge something from the phone lol that'll kill that battery
PS: This is just me being nosey, but it looks like your phone has "seen some things" aka it looks a little rough lol. Has it been dropped in the past? I used to be a phone repair technician for sprint and I saw this same thing, it ended up being that the cable from the digitizer had barely become wiggled loose on one side. There was another occasion where the GPU had toasted itself (this was an htc one) and we had to send it in to be repaired.
So im interested to know if a reboot solves your issue.
I took the phone apart at work, and from what I can tell, the main board has gone bad. I believe that simply because I've disconnected every non-essential component from the main board and it's still doing the same thing. I'm going to part out any good parts on ebay and scrap some cash from it.
The display should fetch a pretty penny. Enough to get yourself Nexus 5X without having to pay too much out of pocket, seeing as a Note 5 outright is pretty pricey.
If you have TEP, you can always go through the store and get a new one ordered for you. If you do not, a $75 fee occurs, but at least its a cost effective route for a bad board, if you do not want to part it out.
Never dropped it or got water in it. Never tried to change the OS or anything like that either.
It started freezing and a soft reset would get it back up. Started happening more often and eventually none of the suggested resets would work and even when charging with the phone off it would freeze. I eventually managed to get it into the recovery boot (just the once) and it said E:/ failed to mount over and over. When i pressed a button it froze again and since then i haven't been able to get any response. Not even the little battery symbol or red light when it's on charge. It seems completely messed up and essentially a brick right now.
Any ideas? I can get it repaired via my UK network provider (O2) which would take a couple of weeks but would really like to back up and factory reset my stuff if possible as i have lots of personal data on my phone including passwords to peoples websites (i'm a web developer). As well as the ordinary things your girlfriend wouldn't want ending up on the net. My online banking and everything is on there. There's pictures with some famous people at Glastonbury and also some brilliant sporting events i was at that i'd never be able to get the vids/pics back.
With the failed to mount error, would that mean they'd have to factory reset it regardless of what happens and i'd have no chance to back it up either? I'd really rather not lose my files but i also don't want some random guy snooping through my stuff.
Thanks in advance for any replies guys!
Have you tried a different charging method?
From PC with a different USB lead for example
Leave it connected overnight and see how it is the next day
Thanks for the reply.
My girlfriend uses my charger to charge her blackberry as she lost hers and it works fine. I also tried leaving it for a few hours connected to the laptop using the USB connection from the original charger with no response whatsoever. My mother has as Samsung too... given the points i just told you, is it worth trying to borrow another charger still?
I'd reluctantly be happy even if i have to factory reset to save me having to wait for ages to get it back.
No, sounds like you can rule out the charger being the problem
Sounds like something inside the phone has fried, possibly the charging port if you can't even get an LED on, but considering the errors leading up to the fault it sounds more like the motherboard has died, which, unless you saved anything to external SD (MicroSD), contains the Internal storage where all your files are
More than likely, Samsung will just replace the board rather than fiddling around trying to repair that one, so unless it is something else at fault you can probably relax about them snooping, it'll end up in the recycling bin to be melted down for it's gold contacts never to be powered up again
I can't think of anything else you can try to get life out of it tbh other than opening it and charging the battery another way / replacing the battery with a charged one, but warranty is gone after that and not even sure how you would go about switching batteries tbh, if you can
If it is already out of warranty, you could find where the battery terminals connect to the motherboard, and put an alternate power source to them matching the battery voltage etc (Removing the battery first), might give you time to remove / erase / copy
Thanks again for the reply.
So you think the motherboard just progressively died? I hadn't mentioned this but a while ago i accidently left the phone on the radiator for a short while whilst working. It worked fine afterwards and when i asked on another forum they said if any damage was going on it would have restarted or gave an overheat message (which it didn't).
I guess i'll be sending it off to my network provider (O2 UK) then, it's still in warranty (just) so they should fix it or send me a new one. I've seen so much stuff on amateur porn sites of videos or pictures that probably weren't meant to be "released", leads me to having a fear about my girlfriend ending up on them. And like i said, passwords are stored on there to some websites i create for people so its not just my personal data but theirs. I don't really know how these businesses are run, i'd imagine they'd want to get as many phones done as possible... but knowing me if i was doing that job i'd probably have a snoop where i could lol.

If the phone powered on when you sent it in then no doubt somene would have a snoop, but if it is DOA they won't waste their time, they'll be getting thousands of phones a day to go through, yours will just be another number: Press power > Nothing > test with some USB device > Nothing > open > replace motherboard > test > working > job done
Something like that I would imagine
For future reference, get a MicroSD card for your replacement and save all media to that, then you don't have this problem if it dies
Hey guys.
I have a Samsung Galaxy a51 but last week the screen broke. I cant see anything besides green lines and such.
Now i wanna either repair the screen or throw it away. But i wanna do factory reset in all cases. I think there might be possibility in recovery Mode but on this phone seems difficult.
So anyone with a Galaxy a51 can you probably tell me what and how i have to press to get blindly to recovery in order to execute the factory reset?
As another notice: i never used any unlock code, but since digitizer is broken also i cant use touch. Vol+/- and Power is working, device is powering up but not adb . It shows as symbol on pc but since i cant swype to top to get off Lockscreen i cant access the folders.
Maybe someone can help
If you're going to throw it away simply use the 5 pound sledge clean wipe technique.
Otherwise you'll need to bring up the boot menu and count down the menu mentally as you click the volume key... you get the idea.
The 5# sledge is a lot easier
Okay so destroying the device is easier? I thought so. But maybe i can even do better and fix the screen myself, this would be another way.
Another idea would use otg with HDMI and usb but not sure if it would work
I'm just saying if you're not going to try and repair it... not saying it's the wisest course of action.
If you change your Google and Samsung passwords most of the links will be locked out anyway.
This is another overlooked advantage to having an SD card and using it as a data drive.
You can simple physically remove the data.
Humm. I think it will depend on how much i wanna spend on it. I dunno how much is it worth? I think it was around 280€ (Well yes euro, im from Germany anyway).
I got my phone (a samsung galaxy note 5 (sm n920c)) bricked while flashing stock firmware with odin. The process ran successfully but the phone couldn't boot further after showing the Samsung logo. I can't go into developer options and enable usb debugging or enable oem, unlock bootloader and boot a custom rom etc since the phone won't work and everything is locked.
I tried to flash twrp with odin but no success. On top of all these things now the phone won't stay for longer in the download mode (odin mode) except for few seconds, may be I have lost support for the battery, and I can't get to try a different method such as custom cwm recovery for getting into the recovery mode and installing a custom rom. I have tried to remove the battery and rely on external power but I don't know why the phone doesn't even go into the odin mode without battery.
Is there a possible solution or I should feed my dustbin something valuable.

Add to that thought there may be more damage than just the display. Tough call especially if money is tight.
@blackhawk we're still not done. Add costs for the necessary tools. And think about the working time humm. Doesnt fit the bill. Suddenly the 5 pound sounds pretty good. Maybe i Just lay it under the wheel of my car, just drive over it. Might work as well lol

Microwave oven, bonfire... ideally you want to destroy the flash memory chipset but that's probably way over kill.
I wonder if i break the phone if the battery could potentially explode. This is why i would simply deassemble the device and kill the board

Just drain the battery before hand. Or set it aside for now, no rush.
Yes there is really no rush. Luckily i have a second phone which with im writing currently. This is working very fine.
I always use a case. They've saved my devices countless times.
This time i used one with only back protection. I should have known better. But the flip books are Always getting dirty. Feels dirty after few months but well this one here now at least have a flip book cover
This one. Easy to hold, clean and doesn't attract dirt. Pretty good heat dissipation.
Excellent drop protection. Never comes apart in a drop. The case kick stand eventually breaks but it's not needed.
My N10+ has taken close to a dozen 2-4 foot drops onto concrete with zero damage. It wuvs to corner hit when it's not face planting.
Nice. Thanks for the recommodation i might as well try this one.
Btw, i did what i mentioned First.
For all ppl that wanna factory reset their phone blindfolded, whyever:
1. Let the battery die
2. Charge it for ca 5 min
3. Connect to pc, hold power and vol up until it vibrates. Let go of power button as soon as it vibrates.
4. Press vol down exact one time and then press power button
5. Start fastboot on pc, Check if device is connected
6. Execute fastboot -w for purgeing userdata
7. Reboot with fastboot reboot
Now the 5 pound can work as well
But one thing is certainley strange. After i played around with fastboot oem unlock without activating unlock oem in debug menu it shows on every pc as unknown device and never boots up. Feels like its bricked. Very strange thou. Probably the battery died while try to execute fastboot unlock or sth
And yeah its starting to turn into a hobby of mine to play with devices til they get Hardware bricked. The Huawei p20 suffered a bit different but also somehow relateable damage (tried to unlock bl but short circuited everything on the PCB lol). I cant deny its fun to Check out the edge of possibilities there are in android phones
