[Q] HELP! USB plug on phone is broken...how to flash to stock for warranty exchange? - HTC Inspire 4G

OK so something broke with the mini USB connector on my Inspire and I can't get a connection to the power outlet or computer anymore. I figured I would send in my phone to get a warranty exchange but I have Android Revolution right now and since a rooted phone is out of warranty I am going to get smacked with a fee. Is there any possible way to reset the phone or flash back to stock without a USB connection? Should I just let the battery die before I send it back so they can't charge it and see that its rooted? Help!!

I'm kind of in the same boat as you, today i dropped my phone out of a truck and now the speaker sounds like it's through a McDonalds speaker box. I need to restore to factory but i have Coredroid 6.7 and with that came with EXT4 i was wondering how to get it back to EXT3 or if it was necessary and is there any tools besides ACE to restore it? Im not having alot of luck with ACE and afraid to press the stock rom without going back to EXT3. Any help would be greatly appreciated thanks!

Find a way to get your SD card in a media slot.

Unrooting will be pretty easy. Just get a micro sd adapter and mount the SD on your pc. The copy the pd*.img rom to the root of the card. Then put the card back in the phone and boot in to Hboot and install the ROM.
FIRST, though you need to get S-OFF. That will be more tricky. You'll need to copy some files from the hack kit to your SD card and run some commands from the terminal window on the device.

What do I do after that? Format the SD Card? Won't they still be able to tell I have a custom rom flashed?

See my post. That is what he was getting at...

Where do I find which commands to run in order to get S-OFF? I only have like 50% left on my battery.

I would suggest you turn off anything not absolutely needed. Maybe even airplane mode I'f you can go without a phone.

You can get to stock through hboot and flashing the Stock RUU.
I'm just not sure how you can get S-On without ADB. Unless there's some way to run the commands through the Terminal on your phone.

There are other options especially since most ATT stores wont check and have no idea:
Flash the rooted or unrooted stock ROM without the sideloading option that the look and feel appears stock and walk to the store.
Get wife and/or girlfriend out of the house, remove battery, battery and lower cover and treat the phone with 10 sec microwave (I never said this)....
99% chance that it is bricked.
Both is fraudulent reg. warranty claims (as is rooting) but I guess we all know this.*
*That's just the legal sticker - LOL

The microwave thing isn't a bad idea... but main questions is do i need to go back to EXT3 for Stock RUU?

Re-installing the stock RUU will replace the EXT4 with the original image so it won't matter. The RUU replaces just about every partition on the phone. The only thing you have to worry about is the S-OFF which you can disable, but they likely won't even notice--especially if they can't boot it anyway because the battery is dead.

@ the dead battery comments, why on earth wouldn't they put a battery w/ some juice in it to check the phone? That would the first thing I did.

ok..so I called AT&T and told them that something broke inside the USB connector on the phone (probably stupid) and tried to get a warranty exchange, and they said it was physical damage to the phone so I am not eligible for a replacement.
my question is this...if I pull the whole microwave thing and take it into the ATT store, will there be a note or something on my account saying that I had already called and told them something was broken?
i just find it absolutely ridiculous that although there is no water/physical damage to the phone, they can tell me i damaged the phone and now I'm screwed after only having it for 2 months...

ATT does keep phone logs but I have NO idea if they show up on your account if they pull it up on the screen in the store.
Anybody from ATT here?
I'd brick it and just walk in.

As a guy who has worked with AT&T Warranty exchange, I will tell you right now: Physical damage, as per dropping the phone, isn't covered by warranty. If the people at the factory see any damage inside the phone, they'll still charge you for it.

Yes, they keep a log of that, actually, it's stored in the system: Your name, last 4 of the social and the written log file. Basic keywords on there is "Damaged port/prongs". Damage to the port is considered as physical damage and isn't covered. Did you pay for the 4.99 insurance? That might cover it, and you'll be routed to the insurance company Asurion.

You may want to try HTC directly. They may well repair it for you for free. I think they are more customer service oriented than ATT... The downside is you'd be without a phone for a while.

If you did brick there is a thred in the dev's that can and will show you how to unbrick and you can shop and decide on witch Rom you won't to go with look at it this way you have the best of both worlds good luck

Had an issue today similar to yours, unlocked the bootloader today and kept the stock rom. Tonight I started deleting the bloatware, mainly using root explorer, no issues really. Used titanium backup to "force remove by exploit" I think its called. Did that and phone went black, tried powering back on, pulled battery etc, nada.
Ended up plugging device to usb charger and booted into bootloader, rebooted from there and its fine.
I ran into this tonight. See this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1198585
Short story -- Clockwork Recovery is bugged and won't charge the phone. Your battery level is too low to power on, so you need to use another method to get some power into it.
I did this:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/15034469/tmp/recovery_fail.jpg
And yeah it's a lame problem.
Ahh, so this is not really a bricked phone, but a case of CWM dead battery! Good to know, as its an "easy" fix then. I was afraid that the phone, simply S-off and perm rooted, had somehow crashed permanently.
Matt
Straight Bricked
For me its not the battery, when tmobile sent me a new sensation i used my old battery, sdcard and sim and the battery still had around a 75% charge. I cant boot from usb i cant do anything. Its completely dead.
As for what i did?
I had been flashing multiple roms and kernels for 2 weeks. Overclocking, undervloting bla bla. No issues a wipe and flash couldnt take care of. I think i did a wipe and flash of a new rom and thats it. Dead. Wish i could remember exactly what it was. I guess im gonna mail it back since i have a new one and probably get charged full retail if they see its s-off and root.

Ahh..So it wasnt the silly CWM ordeal then. That sucks!
Try to pinpoint what you were doing right before this happened. Were you wiping something? (what were you wiping) Were you flashing a ROM? (What were to flashing)
Try to provide more details, as I am sure some of the devs here will be looking to jump all over it shortly.
EDIT: Were to making sure to check that the ROM you were flashing was meant for your version of the phone as well as the files not corrupted? I know it sounds silly, but its something to rule out.
Matt
happened to me too on two batteries. I believe that it is due to overclocking the cpu. because the battery stats are calibrated for a slower CPU speed, it drains it past the failsafe point to pure failure. CWM will recognize CPU for the given ROM. i flashed back to S-ON and regular RUU 1.29 and charging my batteries again for the correct CPU + battery stats. wish me best of luck
Wow, am i that stupid
Not positive but i think i figured out what i did. Something really stupid.
I think i flashed: [Desire] InsertCoin CM7/STOCK 1.1.0
So am i fully bricked?
Gotta put the phone in the mail tomorrow.
Do you think they will see that its s-off or if its (truly) bricked can they not?

They'll know....
actually... having worked in a few cell phone repair / refurbish facilities... i can tell you that they won't even look. they just plug the phone up to their bench and it overides everything and does a fresh flash. from there they just replace plastics to make it look like a brand new phone. if they are unable to flash it at the bench, they replace internals. so relax... no one will know or care what you did to it. these places get thousands of phones a day. and each tech at the bench has a quota to get through.
Thanks for your feedback guys. Shipping it off now...

There are good number of threads out there that can help you, I recommend searching. In short, any time you're going to send your phone in to AT&T, it's a good idea to unroot and install a stock RUU. I'm not 100% on the rules or whatever, but rooting voids warranty and if AT&T sees it they may reject your warranty claim, assuming you go the route to send it in. Search for Gene's tool to unroot, or use the AAHK (I believe there is a step in there to unroot). I've used Gene's tool and I know it works fine.
The only alternative I can think of is taking it to a 3rd party to have it fixed. You probably won't have to unroot then but if you're paying for insurance you might as well use it and not pay out of pocket..unless of course the fix would be relatively cheap but honestly can't see that being the case. Hope that helps!
If the phone is under manufacters warranty then spend the $5 for shipping to have to sent to the HTC department address they give you. Its much cheaper and a better route to go than yo have ATT charge you $150 for the phone insurance coverage. I had to send mine in. I unrooted it and put it back to complete stock. That was all I needed to do. Because they never said my warranty was voided when they received my phone upon looking at it and testing it, or whatever they do.
So just unroot and return to complete stock and you'll be fine.

My S-ON tool will work without USB. Just get it on your SD card somehow (via adapter, or download from phone):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1208507
I talked to ATT today and they gave me the number for the warranty replacement hotline. I've noticed that my phone has become increasingly hard to turn on via the power button (Its become slightly recessed), the battery door doesn't fit onto the phone, making the top volume key hard to press, and the vibration feels as if something has become lose inside the device.
My question is, what if when the manufacturers test the device, they decide that nothing was initially wrong. Will I get some sort of weird bill?
My device is completely spotless, minus the details mentioned above.

AOSP & AOKP SD Card Bricked [Think Tank]

I wanted to start a thread for those of us that have bricked our Sensation by formatting the SD card while using a AOSP style or AOKP ROM.
Let's use this thread to collaborate ideas and ways to possibly un-brick our devices.
What we know
-Formatting the SD card in past versions of AOSP and AOKP caused the device to "brick" due to possibley reformatting the NAND memory or at least the eMMC partition.
-Our devices are unresponsive and are only recognized by a PC in "download mode"
-AOSP and AOKP ROMs did brick the devices. Instead of formatting the external SD card, it formatted the internal SD card or what is more commonly known as NAND flash memory of the device(Thanks to T-Macgnolia for this explination)
-Only hope may be to try JTAG and RIFF box.
So let's try a think tank and see what happens. If you have any experience with JTAG and RIFF Box PLEASE put in your 2cents.
I am willing to tear my Sensation apart and go at it with a RIFF box since I just ordered a Galaxy Nexus from Google.
I will start researching JTAG and RIFF tonight, but I figured some one should start a thread like this to clear up the HTC Unbricking Project thread.
You got two thanks from me for this, one here and one in the Unbricking Project thread in the development forum. I am like you I can see this subject clogging up the Unbricking Project thread, so this is a good idea here if members will just use it.
Now as for how to revive devices that fall victim to the awful bug that was in the AOSP and AOKP ROMs. I truly hate that such a bad bug was not noticed before so many had fallen victim to it. I also hope someone or a group of someones can come up with a working solution. But from my knowledge JTAG will more than likely be the only option to revive these devices. I hope I am wrong though. Best of luck to all of you.
I don't know much about JTAG at this point, but if it's the only way I'm willing to go for it and share my experience. As it stands now, my Sensation is just a nice expensive paper weight, so I'm not afraid to tear it down
Well best advice I can do is tell you to start eoing searchs on Youtube. Here is a link to the only video I have found on the Sensation so far. You will need to try to find s video that shows the tear down process that will get you to the point the video I linked shows. But at least the video shows the proper way to attach the JTAG and external power supply. I suggest you aleo see if you can not get in touch with josh from Mobile Tech Videos as I know he can give you some very sound advice on JTAGing a Sensation, or just about any other device for that matter. He is known as connexion2005 here on XDA. It also might not hurt to drop ole AdamOutler a PM asking if he has any advice or input.
well im in this boat with my bricked sensation xe, im taking my phone upto http://www.fonefunshop.co.uk/ on wednesday to get it jtaged with the riff box.
but on some good news, if you read the updates on the riffbox it says it can jtag a htc phone via usb (without opening it) but you need a riffbox plugged in to open the software... so if someone could make a hack to open the software without the box connected you might be able to flash the phone
http://www.jtagbox.com/
Guys,
I'm going to RMA my phone with HTC (i got the SD card brick format issue with AOSP)
Assuming the whole of the internal memory got wiped - HTC cannot tell anything can they? So they should repair it with no hassle?
Any advice is appreciated.
just for those of us that are new has this bug been fixed?? as it seems like a pretty big deal. also jupuntobear deals with the sensation devices in download mode to do its s-off so maby they know a way to flash the firmware back onto it?? some sort of homebrew usb/jtag kit maby?
I want to confirm that jtag solution works ... I bricked my phone and now its back to life
I am not the one who actually done the jtagging thing, I will ask him to post a tutorial here on how to do it step by step ...

Hello pplz,
I just wanted to let you know about my story:
I had lots of unused crap that was left behind by different ROMs and APPLICATIONs on my sd card, so I used this app called SD MAID.
Then when my phone's battery dead that day, the phone turned off and I could never revive it...
I had AOKP rel 34, the one just before milestone 5.
SO probably that was the cause of the brick.
BE CAUTIOUS with any kind of sd card related app on AOSP/AOKP!!

I Don't think your Device is bricked...i saw somewhere that sometimes or maybe in some ROMs, when you used up full juice of your Battery, it usually takes time to start..i am obviously not sure if i am right, i just read that quickly and ignored it because i never consume the Battery till it goes to 0% and phone turns off...by the way i think this SD CARD Format doesn't cause bricking in Virtuous Inquisition? it's also AOSP..Although senseless..but maybe some files could be used in V.I As well which causes this.i don't have PC..So my Sensation fullfils my PC Needs (Almost)..so definitely cannot fancy tearing my phone a part...
It seems like JTAG w/ RiffBox is the only way....boooooo.
Does anyone have or know someone with a box, or at least where to get one???

I don't really know what happen to Alipk52's Sensation. But I can tell you this, the bug that was in the AOSP and AOKP ROMs did brick the devices. Instead of formatting the external SD card, it formatted the internal SD card or what is more commonly known as NAND flash memory of the device. Now with the internal memory formatted this means you have no bootloader which means the device can not boot, which means brick. So yes the SD card format bug did cause bricking.

The problem you had was not the one described in this thread, and I would put money on him not using JTAG on it at all. I find that often if I let my phone battery die completely it will not turn back on, even if I leave it on charge.
I have to charge it up a bit, unplug it, turn it on, then plug it back in again.

i think this guy was on to something. if we could create a generic copy of the sensation using this program, with imei and other sensitive things removed and then flash it back using that program. thoughts?
I would just like to offer my Sensation as a sacrifice to the cause. It's bricked either because of the AOKP SD brick or failure to update to the ICS radio before upgrading from 2.3 to 4.0.

Not updating the firmware only causes bootloops, not a brick.
You'll know if it's proper bricked as it wont even charged.

[Q] Static from headphone jack (questions about Moto service)

Hi, my headphone jack has always been pick about having things plugged in just right, usually the slightest bit of ling screws it up. Finally today, it just started giving serious static in right side. when music or any sound starts it goes away, but the volume is very low on that side. It only does it when there is power (battery is in), so I think it is a bad connection in there. I have some questions regarding this.
1. How horrible is the Motorola service? they say 5-7 days, but is that really the case (In the U.S.). My warranty is still good, I'll just flash back to stock.
2. will opening the phone up void my warranty? I am somewhat experienced with electronics, so I could probably fix it, but I don't wantt to void the warranty in case it doesn't work.
3. I also have a stuck pixel on my screen that has been there since I got the phone (New). Will they fix that as well even though I can only select one problem on the application form? Should I mention it as well so that they might fix it?
Thank you,
-lkrasner
P.S. Unfortunately this means that I might be unable to do much for a while when I send my phone away. I hope you guys get ICS without me, and I will be waiting to try it out myself.

Just do a mis-flash or delete the system partition and take it into a store and tell/show them it does not boot, that you picked it up off the charger and it was like that, and you need a replacement. They will send you a replacement and you have 30 days to return your "broken" phone. I have done this 4 times with my A2s.

But my AT&T warranty is up?!?! will it still work? I still have my 1 year moto warranty.
Edit: If this does work I owe you something huge, plus I would get my screen problem fixed
EDIT 2: would I be better off just deleting something that would just stop if from booting past the boot logo (big M) so it wouldn't be so obvious that I just killed it with is basically sayins so on the fastboot screen. If so what could I delete that wouldn't prove I had rooted, probably nothing now that I say that.

That is the Moto warranty, AT&T will just help you "file" it since it is done through them anyhow.
Just don't call moto yourself.

sweet, I will try that, what should I do to brick just erase system with fastboot? isn't that really obvious? or are all the employees just stupid. Obviously I need to do something recoverable so that i can get it back if it doesn't work.

Do anything that will make it either boot loop or stick on the dual core/moto boot screen. Whacking system/boot should do that, and you can still flash it back to stock before you send it back if you really want to.... they are just going to fully refurb it and re-sell it...
The secret is to act dumb, pretend like you know nothing bout flashing and this site... just act like it just went nuts and started this, and it will not boot.
Ask for the advanced replacement.

OK, and they will not be able to see root then, and if they flash it back to stock it will no longer be rooted, so I should be fine. I opened a service request with Moto earlier, do you think that will be a problem? Should I wait until it expires so they don't get suspicious that I bricked it on purpose.

if it is borked when you take it to the store they can't see that it is rooted cause it won't boot... all they are going to do it call their 1-800 number and help you file a support request... then the person the phone will let you know of the "requirements" and ask if the phone has any visible water damage, yadda yadda...
Then they will send you a new phone and you should get it in 3 or so days and you are supposed to send the old one back in the SAME box... so you will already have flashed the fxz and been using the phone the whole time you waited for the new one to show up... just don't forget to send it back... I did and waited until 25 days later, and I was bugged mercillessly by att...
Just make sure you factory wipe and take out your sim and SDcard, and battery door... they do not send anything but the core of the phone, no batt or batt door or anything.

@jim on playing dumb, hilarious ..i do that when i upgrade my phone.im such an ass when i upgraded to a2 from xperia x10 that i didnt even bother restoring it to stock, i left cm7 on it,custom bootlogo ,said "free xperia team" on boot.i just pretended i didnt know what happend. it was so enjoyable.
service rep - "it appears to be rooted"
My response - "What do you mean rooted? It has roots like a plant?".
@krasner
You worry to much, they cant prove anything.just brick it and youll be fine.u could even play dumb as u crack a smile while doing so and they still really cant do anything to prove u did it and have to exchange it.

worked beautifully! I deleted build.prop and default.prop, so it just went to a black screen after the moto logo. when the guy called the warranty center he said it was "extremely defective and clearly in need of replacement."
After I walked out, I went home, booted into bp tools, taking me to cwm and used adb to push the two files back. The phone already shipped.
However I am thinking of selling it BNIB and getting something else, any ideas what I could get for it

[Q] Odd Phone Behavior after flashing H810PR10 (Lost 30GB of memory?)

It would appear that, in my habit of ruining everything, I failed the low effort boot and bricked my new LG G4. Thankfully, I remembered that in this instance you can flash the stock firmware to return to default. Unfortunately, the US firmware wasn't available, but apparently the Puerto Rico one was. I flashed that and got my phone back working just fine, kind of.
First, it doesn't lock normally. Usually, I set it to the 10 minute lock delay, where I just have to swipe unless 10 minutes have passed, then it requires the password. Instead of going to a lock screen, it skips that and just goes right into the phone. It's probably a settings thing, but it's weird.
The worst thing is that I have apparently lost 30GB of storage to "miscellaneous". When I plug it into my computer, it says that I only have 1GB of storage on the whole phone. What is going on here?
Same thing happened to me. Your not gonna be able to flash anything else because of the space on the phone, and can't get the System Image onto a MicroSD card to try and fix it either. I tried both then I just called up AT&T and told them about a problem which I did encounter with the flash making noise when turned on. They replaced the phone
Not sure if there is an actual work around to get the space back but what happened was you flashed it to the wrong partition.
I have the same issue. No one has figured it out yet

The problem is that I'm not encountering any issues like that so far. I doubt that they'd replace an issue caused by failed root.
Sorry for the double post, but is there any way that I can create a situation where I could get my phone replaced? I just got it, so it still is under warranty.
Flash the ATT system image back on to it and brick it is about your only option.

Best case scenario would be to call them up and tell them your phone got bricked due to an update. Then let them know that you needed the said phone in a working condition until you can get a replacement.
Or tell them a bull**** problem, normally they send you the replacement then you ship yours out to them. Done this twice already I'm on my 3rd G4

Can I just take it to the shop bricked "from an update" and get a new one there or do I have to mail it in?

You can take it to a shop, but they will still call customer service and you will have to mail it in still. I paid extra to have a next day replacement.
Was told they don't switch phones in store anymore. Had a few local friends confirm their warranty replacements were done the same way from in store. I'm not sure if that is a national policy, regional, or local. I can say I did like it better when they could switch out in store.
Anybody come up with another solution besides sending the phone back??? I won my phone off a att contest. So I doubt if att will do anything about it. Plus I can't install the stock Img and re soft brick the phone because I don't have anymore space
