info about AlphaRevX for DesireS ; Software "S-OFFing" DesireS - HTC Desire S

i see that a lot of people are asking about AlphaRevX and info about AlphaRevX is spread in several topics in several device forums.
actually i spoke to guys working on AlphaRevX.
i learned that AlphaRevX is tested on HTC Wildfire/IncredibleS.
BUT i was told that DesireS should be also unlocked with AlphaRevX - but closed beta testing was not done on DesireS yet.
only sensation should not work with AlphaRevX for Wildfire/IncredibleS because its setup its a bit different(but im sure someone will work this out eventually).
AlphaRevX could be released until end of this month. at least that seems to be the consensus.
all we need to do is wait (and donate)

great news!

wow great news!!! yahoooooooo! I can't wait for this!

just what i wanted to hear

I still believe that S-Off Desire S would be the same way as S-Offing the Incredible S

The AlphaRevX is a modified bootloader right ?

I hope it will be reversible..(unlike xtc clip) so you could S-ON for warranty purposes.

Who told this to you? Was it the developer of AlphaRevX ?? Are you SURE that this will come to the Desire S ? I don't care when, but are you positive this it will support the Desire S? From your post, it seems like an assumption. Thnx

Well.. send the developer a pm and ask him... i pretty sure that it will work on the DS or it will help to make one for DS

yes, i believe they are the main developers of this utility. IEF and KMDM.
KMDM is also posting here on xda-devs forums. you can PM him, but im sure he will not be able to provide more information like i did. we will need to wait until AlphaRevX will be released and someone will test in on desireS or someone will betatest it with desireS.
as i wrote in 1st post, they said it SHOULD work on desireS without any problem.

Thanks for the info bro. I'll wait about one more month for this. That's the PEAK of my patience. If it's not out by then, I'm gonna have to use the XTC Clip.

Technically the Incredible S and Desire S share the same bootloader security so there really shouldnt be a problem with it working on the DS.

Not out, Desire S support will probably be added after the initial release.

No, from what I understand this is a software method that will make your device S-OFF (the same as the XTC would, except reversible) and then you'll be able to achieve root using either the gingerbreak or superoneclick method.
EDIT: I now believe that you'll need TEMP root to apply the software....continue to read the next posts for more information.....

naybe use a goldcard and downgrade?
i don't know...
Currently the Desire S can only be unlocked by the XTC Clip, however i dont know if the software is public yet (dont have one). Since the release of the Incredible S alot of people have tried breaking the code, but at the moment of writing no-one has gotten trough.
Downgrading is not usefull, since there are no older builds which have the wpthis exploit in it. If you got a signed rom that has an Eng Hboot in it, it will be possible but currently its not possible....
does any dev have Desire S?
None does as far as i know, and there are few with a Incredible S so testing is also hard to do...
But i can assure you if the IS is s-offed, the DS wouldn't be that hard to port to

[Q] HTC Desire S s-Off and ROOT

Hi there everybody,
I'm probably in the wrong section of the forum, and my questions are nubby I know, but I get confused.
My Desire S is S-ON, and I would like to get is S-OFF. Is this possible, because it is needed to be able to root the phone right?
And an offtopic question, what is a flash-able app, and what is the difference with a normal custom .apk which can be installed from the sd card.
Thanks in advance

Paul is in the game!

Hey guys,
Paul O'Brien just tweeted that he received his sensation this morning! That's awesome.
Also, HTC sent him a s-off version!
That should give a massive boost to sensation development.
This is really great, really gives HTC extra points if they give such a big handover to community. That´s the spirit, give an unlocked phone to such a dev.
Just wishing they would do the same for Cyanogen...
I can't wait to see what he has in store! This phone has so much potential once they get it unlocked, it's crazy!
This is wonderful, damn I'm looking forward to see him doing his magic!
HTC shud send him device with S-ON so he can figure out how to S-OFF it.
If he already hv S-OFF device, nothing much todo then
Let's see how fast he roots..... He's usually pretty quick. Go Paul go!
He's running on 1.34.401.1 - new ROM version

People have been attempting to contact HTC and letting them know that they are in breach of the open GPL compliance act by not releasing the kernel source, which would allow s-off (I think, that's what I get from it..)
See this thread for more info http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1629933
They're pretty much saying it will be out in 90-120 days. Don't get why it takes so long when the one x and one v both got it already, but I'm assuming they have some kind of reasoning for it.

I'm not sure that Kernel Source will do anything for S-Off as the kernel is not part of the HBoot. Unless Kernel Source also includes a new S-Off HBoot, which I doubt it. To obtain S-Off an exploit (like with the Sensation) will need to be found or an HTC signed HBoot that provides S-Off.
Kernel Source will allow custom kernels with speed tweeks, OC/UV, OTG, etc. etc.

What I meant was I hoped HTC released S-OFF HBoot after the kernel sources were released. I doubt they would release a signed HBoot before the kernel.

Signed, I've no idea why they can make the bootloader unlocked but not give S Off, what other harm would it do, we already invalidate the warranty.

Exactly. That's why its being requested. All they would have to do would release a signed HBoot with S-OFF for each device. Or provide a universal tool. Either way would work for me.

Need advice before rooting a new Desire S :D

Hi all,
I am new to android and just* want to root my phone as many apps demand your phone to be rooted such as full backup apps, firewall apps and other similar apps.
I am still on HTC's stock 2.3.3 with HTC sense v.2.1 (though i have downloaded the OTA update for 2.3.5 but kinda confused over negative reviews of 2.3.5 update..so I am holding it here right now)
But when I saw a guide here though quite helpful but I was a bit confused as what I read on other articles on XDA + on other blogs that a thing called HBOOT is a bit tricky to tackle while following a particular rooting method; as there are many ways to root like using revolutionary..installing custom bootloaders etc (is it really neccessary? I just want to root my phone and don't plan to install any custom ROMs in near future.)
I am confused
- as to should I really let my warranty go off the table as its just a month old phone sacrificing it for just a few apps I want to use.
- Please tell me that, will I be able to search for and install the officially released OTA updates such as the 2.3.5 / ICS after I have done S-OFF + Rooted my phone??
If answer to both of the questions above is a "YES"
then plz tell me step by step of how to S-OFF and ROOT my phone (I found multiple ways to Root the phone and now I am confused and not really confident on which way/approach to follow)
Any advice would be appreciated.
Regards,
Sky770
If you want to root, do not download the OTA and install!!
You are in a great position, and you can easily root your hboot with the alpharevx.
Do it, you won't regret it.
Also, we can't give you step by step guides... Follow the index links.
Also, you can't install updates after rooted. But you won't need to. We will have the official ICS prerooted before.

ok.. I really have no idea about what happens and what not happens if i do downgrade my HBOOT but I see many people here on XDA done that (downgraded their HBOOT) Can you shed some light on this topic?
Also, I would definitely want to try official 2.3.5 and/or the official ICS release (whenever they release one; around Q3/Q4 2012? ) so is there any* way to install these if I do revolutionary? I would def. like to find these updates via OTA (will my phone detect these from official HTC servers?)
PS: I am trying to stay as long as with official ROM as of now :| so no near future plans to flash my baby with a custom one

You will not thank me for this, but for your sake I suggest reading instead of writing. All of the info you're asking for is written in the guides, and people that write the guides don't have enough patience to answer those that don't bother reading and ask the same questions over and over. Writing questions instead of reading FAQs and guides leaves you with less probability of having a good answer or having an answer at all, and clutters the already cluttered forum.

As you are on the old hboot, there is no need of downgrading, that's why I said, do not install the upgrade.
We have a ROM, by Proxuser, which is the rooted version of the OTA with no modifications and will work out pretty well.
Once rooted you will not be able to receive any OTA upgraded, but IMHO, hardly matters, you will get the same and better versions out here.
We already have the leak of ICS build for desire S, and it's pretty fast, forget q3
Also we have very functional sense 4 lite, which is faster than sense 3.6
So again, do the revolutionary, it's quite simple actually for you, and flash the saga 3D,, for a stock experience
Tapatalked from a Desire S waiting for Kernel 3 sources. WAKE UP HTC!!!!!!

Just need the root
just a few more noob questions to follow
Thanks for reading and replying

Well the beauty of rooting is trying out custom ROMs... I don't think you should root if you don't intend too. You seriously won't regret it. Just take a NAND backup, you can always restore to it if you don't like the custom ROMs.
And as I have said before...
No, you can't get OTAs once rooted, but you can still install these maually, and you will be able to do it way before the update actually hits your phone 'officially'.
As we have said too, you are in a good position. No need to downgrade at all. Your hboot version is the right one.

You will not thank me for this, but for your sake I suggest reading instead of writing. All of the info you're asking for is written in the guides, and....

Right.. When I acually was craving for a droid I was crazy as hell to root n try out new ROMs but... when I got an HTC I was simply hands down n thought not to touch this beauty. HTC Desire S is quite a package at this cheap price + hardware config.
PS: just a last ques. for now: which OS is the recommended one? I do have linux mint 10 32 bit edition installed on my machine; its a bit old.. rarely updated the packages n all AND I have windows 7 ultimate 64 bit edition ..so which one would you recommend me to root with?
Thanks a lot guys.
I'll get on it.. and will tell you how things go

Well i felt the same too. It's great out if the box, but you can achieve so much more when rooted.
Do it. Also, Windows 7 is easier.
ROMs? Have you checked the dev forum yet?

First thing, you dont need to read 100+ threads, the index is in my signature with all sorts of information
STOCK ICS Sense 3.6: Virtuous Saga
Sense 4.0A(One V port): Fallout
And yes, any OS that you are comfortable with should be fine.. I did it on Win 7

No, that's not what forums are for. You should probably look at the name of the forum and think, what does "-developers" part stand for, and why isn't it called "XDA-users-in-doubt-that-are-too-lazy-to-bother-reading". Your "period" you can use elsewhere.
To your last question: Windows is what the guides are written for, so doing everything on Windows will be better - it won't require you to understand and "translate" everything to Linux.

(wish I could give this a thumbs up too )
@sky770... The guys are right, In my opinion it's only worth rooting your device if you plan to try a couple of custom ROM's. You seriously won't regret. HTC have a habit of leaving some of the older devices to "fall & die" without providing updates. Through the hard work and determination of some of these guys on here, You will not only have your handset kept alive but also at the same level as some as HTC's flagship devices.
As for recommendation on ROM
