New roms. - myTouch 4G General

Any way we can get something fresh? Something different? You all are doing a killer job with the sense and aosp. But how about the dell or windows phone? There was a thread before that people were shooting ideas but don't know what happened. I know ice cream sandwich is suppose to be realeased soon. Any hits on a leak?

SOAP?!?! you want a ModernWarfare based ROM?!?!
and if you want a windows based phone then download a Windows Launcher or buy a windows phone.
going from Android > WinMo is a massive step backwards.
Our developers do an AWESOME job at what they do. They are fast to update ROMs, and they've always attack known bugs with both barrels. If you do not like our choices, that's fine but keep it to your self. We've already lost one good kernel developer because of whinny little tikes, we don't need to chase of any of our fine development teams. TeamDouche (cyanogen) and TeamRoyal have both made front pages of various websites, and blogs with their contributions to the XDA community. I think we have enough choices, IF you don't like them... go order a Whopper from McDonald's and see how that works for ya.

This is certainly not something that belongs in the development section and to be honest, could be considered quite insulting to the developers.
These guys work their ass off, in their spare time I might add, to bring these ROMS to the table for us and they do the very best with whats available to them.
I'm not saying your out to insult anyone but I've seen numerous threads like this turn nasty for no good reason and thats not gonna happen here.
Before anyone else chimes in with the age old nugget of wisdom that I fully expected to have already been posted....

Well on that subject i think i am going to find out how to make roms and kernels sometime. Need to get Linux OS first though i guess.

Wow good to know you're a ****. As i stated I have nothing against what they are doing. Just a suggestion that something new would be nice. To expand their abilities. Not everyone can do it. I included. Your smart ass comments were not needed. If you don't like what I asked then simply stay off my post. People like you are reasons why XDA gets bad Rep for giving others with questions a hard time.

Respect - Dev's

This section is full of the most ungrateful whiny bunch I have yet to see in any mod type forum. I really feel bad for the mods for this phone and I have a great deal of respect for the amount of bs and stupidity you have had to deal with.
It is very clear to me that far too many users in this section lack the proper respect and understanding as to the amount of work and time goes in to 3rd party phone dev. They take your work for granted and cry at every point they get a chance.
There is a big difference between reporting a bug and "OMFG X Doesn't work wtf I donated and the world is ending" (*cough* bella *cough*).
"you all" need to grow up and get a grip on how this scene works, or seriously MOVE ON.
Again thank you dev's for all you do and all you deal with, I can't imagine your frustration.

This. I agree. Creating this thread and throwing a stone at the same time, is no different than the petty nonsense that was happening in gtg's dev thread. Just stop it, ask a mod to remove this thread, and like most things on the internet, it'll be forgotten.
This thread just throws salt in the wound.
It's pretty nauseating. With any sort of open source software, you're going to get jerks who assume that devs owe them full-time work commitment for miniscule donations.
If you're going to want the attention of someone paying for full-time work, keep your donation and invest in some books on development. It's open source, do it yourself instead of complaining that other people aren't living up to your standards. (I'd love to see any of the people complaining churn out even simple development.)
Love Infused! Admire the work! Awesome job!
Although the technical programming stuff is way over my head, I have to say that I am totally loving Infused. I've done each update since stable was released and have had a very good experience using it. I've also tried some of the apn suggestions and added Infusion since the updates where put on hold. Before Infused, I had to use the unbrick to fix my own mistakes twice. I've played with phones before, so I know I am taking a risk with anything I add or try. Tweaking, adjusting, and sometimes starting over are just part the the process. Maybe frustrating at times, but also part of what makes trying to get the most out of your phone fun and exciting. If people want to enjoy the rewards of the mod, they have to also accept the risks of the mod too.

Now that the Vibrant has an ICS ROM

Now that the Vibrant has an ICS ROM currently under development, and since I have read Vibrant ROM's can be ported to the Samsung Galaxy S 4G, does anyone know how feasible this would be? From my understanding the storage is a bit different (partitioning?) but the hardware in these devices appears very similar.
I've read the post about porting Vibrant ROM's but I've also read a few people haven't had much luck. Since I am on leave this coming week I've decided I'll tinker a bit with the concept, I'm also curious if anyone else has.
No doubt, I wish I had the capability to use the source to begin work on a ROM compiled directly towards the SGS4G, but alas I do not
Any ideas or inputs would be greatly appreciated. I am disappointed in the lack of development for this phone, but I do understand why.
Probably won't happen. We don't even have an aosp kernel compiled that I am aware of. Someone was trying to get the KJ6 kernel edited like drhonks and even that didn't turn out.
The couple devs we have left around here are just doing little tweaks and theaming the stock rom lately.... no real new developing afaik.
Kinda sucks... but this phone is pretty much dead in the water.

Yea we are struggling to get a dated cm7 so what makes you think we can get something newer than that.
Sent from my SGH-T959V using XDA App
@camalus But you do have the kernel released for GB by Samsung as of recent, which from what I've seen others are doing to get ICS working on their devices.
@daxecutioner24 If you can't find it, make it.
@EjLIFE Not going krazy over cm7,ill be fine withput it

People, cm kernel is made, just being tweaked, according to krylon. Lets wait patiently, maybe we'll get cm7, then someone will have enough courage to build ICS
Sent from my SGH-T959V using xda premium
I'd agree, CM7 would be great to have on this device. And hopefully their development of CM7 could make moving from CM7 to CM9 much more easier. I just know this device should run ICS just as well as the Vibrant, and I've seen people port Vibrant ROM's to the SGS4G so I was curious if one thought their was a faster possibility.
If you are so needy for new ROMs and development then you should do it yourself or be patiently waiting for WIPs the "few" but great developers have announced and not flooding the forum with wine and cheese... Just my two cents... Im just saying...

Actually, my inquiry was related to the idea of porting the ROM from the Vibrant to this device myself, and asking if anyone with knowledge of doing so if it was even a worthy attempt.
I'm also going to say I have noticed the Samsung side of XDA seems to have only a few developers with knowledge and insight and TONs of people waiting for a chance to flame others. Here is a hint: your post is entirely unconstructive. It isn't your job to protect the developers and when you hop into a thread to shoot your two cents of flame it only details. You are also potentially pushing away the progress others might make by being a douche.
Thanks.

Yes. I get all your comments about how no good is to flame. I dont really care. Just to begin with. I only posted that because people only do is ask and complain about the "few" devs that only do theme-ing and/or their little so called development. Thats flameful and disrespectful itself because if you want some ICS, you can enjoy Ravers Octane. It may not be ICS but you get my idea. This is an old phone, everybody knows that and we just got GB source a few weeks ago. Its not going to be rainning ROMs instantly. Also, GB is older than the phone itself. The Vibrant has been around for maybe 2 years and many people jumped in the first round of Galaxys, probably skipped this Vibrant Plus so then we dont get many users or devs, therefore why so little development. ICS just got out and is available on like three phones whereas the GB have been around and phones now even come with it while we had to start from froyo...
Bah this is pointless debating. Im just sick of these threads talking sh!+ about development here. Everyone should be grateful of what we have. Again, you want something made then do it yourself. Like it or not, its simple like that.
I wont be visiting this so much contributive thread with my so much non contributive posts. And dont mind critizing my typos, English is not my first language.
All of you should call down.

Same thing, since our phone is so different, wouldn't we need an ICS bootloader and or kernel source for ICS for it to work. CM7 may be here in a month, but ICS won't be here until a year after CM9 comes out, if at all. So, just wait for your 2 year tmo contract to end and switch to sprint and get the galaxy nexus 2(possibly 2012).

Petition to former SGS4G developers to return to the forum

As you all know, nearly two weeks ago the long awaited source code for the Android Gingerbread software was released. This had been a joyous occasion for many of us who had been patiently awaiting its release in hopes that it would lead to working versions of Cyanogenmod and MIUI on our phones, as well as several kernel modifications that were not previously possible. The first few hours of speculation turned into days, which turned into weeks, with the promises of development yet to be fulfilled. As it turns out the fears of some of you had come true, that the few developers that were left lost interest in the Galaxy S 4G for other projects.
While people like Raver have actively stuck with us, there has been a dead silence by those who were previously the most visible on this forum. Whitehawkx who has left us for the Galaxy S2, Dsexton who had left for lack of a separate computer, and Dr Honk who God knows where he is. Krylon ive seen mention working on a kernel once but with little detail. These were some of the best we had and we need to make it overwhelmingly obvious to them that they are wanted and needed here. So I propose that we take the time to let them know that the source code they've wanted and needed is now available and ready to be worked. Youre welcome to write up your own words for a message, though heres something I threw together along with the public contact info for the devs.
Feel free to reach out to any other devs who have not been listed here or from other forums.
Update: Dev's emails were removed by site mods. If you would like to email the people below, you can readily find their email in their user profiles and in their Donate To Me links.

“Hello (dev screen name),
This is (your screen name) from the Galaxy S 4G forums on XDA. If you haven’t heard, the source code for Gingerbread we have been eagerly awaiting was finally released a few weeks ago for our phones. With the source finally released, the limitations our devs had faced before in developing for the SGS4G are now gone, and the path is clear for development of CM7 and MIUI for our phones. I have noticed you have not been around the SGS4G forums recently, but I along with all the other forum members have been hopefully awaiting your return to developing for our phones with the expertise you have shown in all of your many other projects for the SGS4G. As well, the lack of devs on the forum have left many of the still poplar ROM’s unmaintained and not updated to the latest official release. Please come back to developing for the SGS4G for all of us who have spent hours testing and using your ROM’s and show us what your talents can turn these phones into.
Thank you”
I think this is good intended but i fear it wont change anything.
Dont forget soma and airfluip who has been developing for our phones recently.
Krylin said in twitter that he will begin working in a ROM based on GB for our phones. Although he said he will start it today if he doesnt its still good news. I know he can make kernels and roms. Also raver is working. Dsexton said he will get a computer soon and that he needed break. White.... I dont know he droppwd when ki3 leaked. But oh well, lets enjoy or wait.
I've been lurking these forums since this phone came out, with the occasional post here and there.
I have seen people waiting months just for root.
I remember kb5 enhanced was our only ROM for times without end, just to have that developer throw a fit at Mr.Clown for mistakingly closing his thread and leave us hanging.
I remember following Krylon on twitter for what seemed like an eternity, until we finally had cwm on our phones.
Then came the good times.
New roms coming out just about every week, themes, mods, and all the goodies we see on our forums today.
New developers popping up, the formation of teams like aerodonk and acid.
Now we are back in one of these silent periods.
It seems like all development stopped.
But one thing I've learned from these forums is that patience is a virtue.
We go from bad times to good times, to bad again, and so on.
I'm sure there is progress being done right now.
No matter how little, our how long it's taking, it will come.
And a new life cycle will start for our phones.
We just gotta hang tight, get through this metamorphose, and then our phone will come out, greater then before!
Saw on krylons twitter something about doing another rom based off of the gb update so that looks promising.
Also its not just the sgs4g. I own a sensation as well and things have really slowed there too.
I understand everybodys frustration with the length of time that it is taking for us to get new roms. But you have to understand these guys do this in their spare time. And yes, it is true that because of Samsung and t mobile taking forever to release a GB for us made some of the devs loose interest and move to other devices; however, we still have Raver and Krylon on or side, Dsexton will be coming back soon, and hopefully we can get Drhonk and Whitehawx back if not for developing but for at least guidance, tips, and support. I for one have started trying to learn how to do some of this but without a Linux machine it is a bit difficult. But there is no reason some of you can't chip in and try to learn this stuff too. Not to override the few true devs we have, but to assist them.

Hi Thomas
Please share your knowledge source. I am willing to learn as well, though to tell you the truth, moding and theming couldn't care me less, I'm always into performance and reliability, as well as good RTL and foreign language support (like in CM and MIUI).
Other than that, I'm always on stock theme.
I'm no dev, but I'm considering to become one in the future.

My biggest resources are picking the brain of RaverX3X and google. You can do most everything on a windows machine except mod kernels and make an Odin .tar (for those you need Linux or the ability to run Linux in a vm environment). There are quite a few tutorials out there. You just have to download the right tools to do it, have lots of spare time to devote to it and the gonads to test it.lol... Pm me later with specific questions and I can give you direct links to tutorials that might help you as well.

I remember when i had the galaxy vibrant early this year i was so into the device cause they were a lots of roms here to choose from and thats one of my concerns now for this device now. If you go to the vibrant section there are a lots of 2.2 biulds 2.2.1, 2.3 ,2.3.3 etc etc etc. And they are all different. Including from stock to MIUI and htc Sence. As well as gingerbread and honeycomb. So my question is why the devs didnt work on some builds like those for this device. From my end i really dont care about what number of the OS is as long the build is stable, fast, bloatware free, custom ringtones, wallpapers, and other great thing that i did manage to see on my old vibrant that i no longer own :/
Yesterday my older sister got the galaxy s 2 for tmobile and its so awsome. I have envy in me now jajajajaja xD

This is mere conjecture on my part, but I would assume that you can modify the kernel in Windows as long as your text editor supports Unix-type line endings (Notepad++ works nicely), and then compile it using presumably gcc in Cygwin. Again, this is merely speculation on my part, having only built a Linux kernel on Linux, for my desktop.

You can't have ice cream until you're done eating yogurt. When you're full, you can have gingerbread. After gingerbread, you can trade it in for a Captivate and put ice cream on it.
Or just buy a phone that is actually supported by samy... Us Infusers are just going to be perpetually left out of the freezer... No sammiches for us
problem around here is the developers never wanted to work with what we have. froyo alone has a ton of potential left in it but with Sammy dangling gb in our faces the devs that made the infuse what it is just got to a point that it was a waiting game and they got tired of waiting. I think the best plan is to work with what we have and make the most out of it. stop jerking around wanting what's not there and just make the most of what is there. froyo on the galaxy s was miles beyond the infuse to the point I was uneasy about upgrading to gb on my cappy.
infuse owners have to realize the infuse has an expiration date. next time get an international flasgship or something closely related to it, that or a nexus where you will have updates for several years coming.

Hey, everyone, I just thought I'd help translate some jargon for the n00bz ... It'd look amateur without it, like a map without a color key, you know?
around here: xda-developers.com, one website and, really, only a little section of it.
froyo: three versions ago in the operating system of topic
jerking around wanting what's not there: asking for current software (...the nerve!!)
sammy: Samsung Electronics Co., or its $220bn parent company Samsung Group (total 2010 revenue)
dangling gb: Samsung's apparent plans to produce, release, and support Android v.2.3, Gingerbread ("gb")
cappy: Samsung Captivate, released July 2010 in U.S.
"froyo ... miles beyond the infuse" : Unintelligible
Okay, I hope I did a good job. Now, if the n00bz keep asking questions, we can do them the service of making our language transparent! Why they won't just get it is astounding... I mean, who would ask questions about new software, anyway?? Just blows my mind... and who could make the mistake of thinking there might be a straight answer about something promising, that is, the new practical features of Ice Cream Sandwich (Android v.4) on a forum dweller's tongue is just plain offensive! Enduring such ignorance is hard, but I suppose it's a must. Live & let live... keep up the tolerance, fellow Infusers.
point taken I guess. what is annoying is the xda moderators have 2 search engines. on is xda wide Google assisted and the other is forum/thread based, not only that but when you create a new thread it suggests threads on similar topics you should read before posting the thread right in your face. yet this will not be the last ics request or "is it available" thread... but I wasn't gonna go there.
as far as ics. it needs a really talented dev to find ways to interface the proprietary stuff from gb to ics. even if we got a bootable version it would possibly be months before it was usable as more than a music player. the galaxy s is very lucky to have a number of talented devs and a closer relationship to the nexus s. even though the rom end could be taken from the galaxy s the kernel would be a big undertaking due to different GPS, Bluetooth, radio, screen, and other componants.
Hm .. lots to think about, there .
Holding these abandoned devices in your hand makes you pine daily for updates on developers' progress toward what would appear to be inevitable. If it isn't, it is a commercial atrocity
By "interface," there, do you mean device emulation or rewritten device drivers? i'm attempting to assess the nature of the challenge, less so its magnitude. i do appreciate both this and the frustration with lazy users.

it could be emulation or I guess some kind of wrapper. like how Linux can use windows wifi drivers on a PC. driver rewrites need source code and/or documentation I would think.
I don't know the technical details but I know entropy has brought up things that have changed that may be hard to port. maybe if the cm9 team actually had an infuse. they have some real talent but the problem is getting it in the hands of an interested member of the team.
we lucked out with Linux bozo but I don't think its typical for a device to get a cm port without the cm team having involvement if the kernel is unique. on many older HTC phones kernels are somewhat cross compatible so those phones are a little more able to share development.
who releases kernels
! Who is responsible for developing/releasing kernels ???
For ics, no one

If someone could come to us, then it would be great. I was thinking maybe we could get DA_G to come over, except idk if he would want to deal with such hard hardware. And to people saying cm9, we do not necissarily need that. Any kind of aosp would be nice.

I know but come on really, I mess around with what others build and I have also have a sky, I don't submit my stuff because frankly half the time it sucks, and I don't have the time to mess with bugs, I've been building rom since windows 5.1 and I can tell you that ics would suck on this phone, not enough ram, yes you can do it but, it would suck

You should do a search before posting. That is not source for our device.
That's a start, can't help but knock people down. Yeah, I know it's O2x dumb ass.

No, it's not O2X either, so knock off the attitude.
That is the development page for the reference Tegra 250 kit, and it's been around for a long time.
The O2X/G2X use the Tegra 250 AP20H. Nvidia has already stated that it's up to LG to release code specific to our phones.
I was saying you should search because that link has been posted tons of times.

I'll admit u got me.... these type of posts need to stop, get hopes up.
NVIDIA NEVER AGAIN!
This looks legit, it was posted a couple days ago, read this:
http://developer.nvidia.com/content/android-40-ics-os-images-tegra-android-available
It includes this:
"Tegra Android Ice Cream Sandwich (4.0) OS Image for Ventana"
The Tegra 2 "Ventana" development kit is targeted at developers creating software for Android 2.2 "Froyo" and above.
Hence, the "Tegra" it is talking about is Tegra 2

No. Ventana is what's used primarily in Tablets. We have "Harmony."
I don't see why you guys are getting mad? It was a simple mistake. No need to bash on this guy for trying to help.

I agree. I mean realistically I'm sure the devs will be the first to know when source or drivers get released, but but don't squash a guy for being enthusiastic and trying to be helpful.
First, I would like to apologize for lowering to a level I have tried to remove from these forums. I have been in this game quite awhile and I've learned one thing for sure, being polite and helpful get the best results. I come originally from the lowly Huawei ascend and I'll tell you, that phone has a great community and still sees support and it hit eol more than 6 months ago. We as a group decided our own fate when WE pushed our devs to lock our ICS thread. This is our device and our forums and we are responsible for building a sense of community. As it is now, I cringe to check my own threads because I know they will be bloodgened with haters and "you're wrong, I'm right ". We should all try to encourage one another and promote how awesome our device is, which brings me to this... Why use these forums to bash the g2x? All the complaining and whining is why t-Mobile bailed out. I am a collision tech for highline vehicles, do you have any idea how much service a Ferrari requires to keep it running? I seriously doubt Enzo Ferrari endured customers calling to tell him what a pos his cars are(I know he's dead) Lastly, I happen to be a successful writer for another website, I happen to be a weath of knowledge with a lot of connections. I have been been working my butt off to help a certain group of devs get a certain app working on our device, all I'll say is those of us that are flashing addicts will appreciate this app. I get things done through kindness and support. I would love to see that sense of community here, lets face it, we ALL use these forums. Thank you so much all devs that have stuck it out with us, our device would be worthless without you, sincerely, artifintel.

qft. The saddest part is that some people will never learn.
BTW: Good luck
Thanks! I'm scheduled to do an article on the app, hopefully they will have it working soon.

Very well said. Although I don't think the "you're wrong I'm right" has a lot to do with the problem. I think the problem goes a little deeper then that.
I feel the problem lies more upon the greed of many users who for some reason think devs/themers owe them something. Developers and themers do this because we like to in our own freetime. We like seeing the page views, downloads, thanks, and constructive criticism that push us to go a step further.
I will give an example of how many of us that make releases look at things. And use my personal releases as reference.
My precision theme for all devices I own and some I don't own has about 6k downloads. Precision for cm7 has about 900. Icecreamcomb has a little over 3k. Weapon new clip has about 400. And a few thousand for all my wallpapers, boot animations, and other images I have created. So apparently a lot of people use my work which is what I hope for upon releasing, seeing as I want people to enjoy it as much as I do.
Look at my thanks meter. I have 210 thanks. So that tells me that out of the 10k+ people using my work only 210 (2%?) where grateful enough to take the liberty to click a button and show appreciation for my hours and hours of hard work. But hey that's fine at least some people do appreciate it and many more use it.
However there are always those that do nothing but troll and complain that drives everyone away. It is sad when it gets to the point that people stop developing for a device because of users. I find it quite astounding the nerve of some people.
