[Q] Charging in airplane mode...anyone else do this? - Thunderbolt General

It may be placebo effect but I went from 56 to 75 percent battery life in mere minutes. If I charge without putting the phone in airplane mode it's just not as quick to get back to a full charge. I know there's an obvious "not using juice to hold network connectivity" but I didn't know if other people had thought about doing this.
I have an extended battery as well so it's not like I really have to charge in airplane mode but I'm all for a faster charge back to 100 percent. Just throwing this out there.

Trying it right now

I know its been over a year and no one has answered your post, but i am charging in airplane mode right now. Not really noticing any difference. Im on a Galaxy S3. Ill post the battery graph later, maybe, maybe in a year, lol

There's also the Super Charge kernel that should allow for faster charging over USB & AC. It's based on imoyeson's leankernel. Don't know if it's hosted here but I know you can find it over at Rootz.

Just had a thought about battery life

Ok. I was responding to a thread about my phone and no reboot's. I notice that some else posted they charge there phone with it off. When i first got my phone I charged it with it off the very first time. Has anyone else done this and not had problems or done this and it still bad battery life? I have had mine unplugged since about 5:30 am and at 7:08 at 38 percent in the staus menu.

Unfortunately, as far as I know dual core is supposed to mean better battery management.
So there's that.

Yup, I know that most would say companies only advertise that as a ploy to sell more devices, but theoretically it really should be true.

I agree, especially after reading Chris Soyars' post about the battery driver. Not only does that mean our reading of the battery is directly affected, but it also leads us to believe that other drivers on the G2X could be poorly coded as well.
The battery life is ridiculous
Honestly I"m coming from a Sony Erisson w810i dumb phone due to lost of my Samsung Eternity 6 months ago. And I have to admit that it was worth waiting for this phone back when they announced at CTIA. I was so close to jumping onto the mt4g, but this unbelievable phone totally held me back. After waiting and suffering for 4 months from my dumb phone I finally got my hand not only on my first android phone, but also a dual core phone. Man this phone is blazing fast without any lag, going from apps to apps. Once I got it out of the box, I noticed the battery life was around 30%. After playing with it for about 30 minutes, it completely die out. I charged it while I was doing the factory reset. After the reset, I turned off my phone and left it charged 8 hrs while it's off with the battery charging screen. Waking up at 9:00am, it was 100% completely fully charged. Left the house to school and at 12:30p.m, it was down to 5%. It's been only 3 hours and 30 minutes! Before the battery started to drain I had wifi, syn emil, bluetooth and even brightness on low. Also, I had GSM/WCDMA on Auto, so that wasn't the cause either. My second attempt charging cycle to full battery, well see how it goes. If the battery doesn't last me over 6 hrs, I'm definitely going to return it for another new one. I'm having a bad impression on my first smartphone and I will do anything I can to get it the way it should be. It just unacceptable and ridiculous. Oh by the way, my phone is not yet rooted or done anything with it beside downloaded few apps and games. ^__^
i had this issue last night when I plugged in my phone it showed charging and 38%. woke up this morning 8 hours later and it still showed charging and 38%, I'm thinking what the f, this never happened with my nexus one. so I plugged the phone into another outlet and used a different charger and left it for an hour and it still showed the same thing. It wasn't until I restarted the phone that it showed 100%, but I find that odd. don't have the slightest clue why this happened.

I took my friend to a T-Mobile corporate store to show him the G2x I bought. I bought mine through TMO Loyalty so I had to wait for it to ship.
Anyhow, there was an LG rep there trying to showcase the G2x and G-Slate and I asked him how the battery life is for the G2x. He told me 6 days on standby and about 5-6 hours of continuous talk time.
I'll check to see if he's still there and take a PTO if I need to, to be there with him and call my office and let them put me on hold and see if the phone has enough juice to make it for 5 continuous hours.
Unfortunately tmo decided to add some apps that run by themselves....after I deleted them I havnt had any apps open without me opening them.....I get about 20 hours wth a lot of use. This is the best battery life I have gotten on any android phone

I don't see how to get 20 hours out of that battery! Are you on edge? any live wallpapers? Account syncing?

Battery draining AGAIN

So i tried what you guys suggested. I rooted the phone, bought setcpu, using anttek to freeze running services, and used the battery calibration app still NOTHING. I just woke up and my battery was at 0 before i went to sleep it was at 62%!! How can it die in idle with no running servislces wi fi off gps off BT off i mean it has to be the battery right?

I was just getting on here to rant about this. It seems that whenever I use the phone the battery gets warm and declines quickly. Lost over 40 percent battery over 2 hrs mostly playing mp3s
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA App
This may or may not be related...just something to think about. For years I've placed my phone in the top drawer of my nightstand when sleeping. What I noticed when switching to Android is if I leave syncing on it will drain my battery. My theory is...in the drawer my data signal is very week or non existent. The phone dutifully tries to sync on that weak signal...searching for signal...fails and retries...or succeeds and transfers at a snails pace. Result dead battery. I've found that disabling data before bed results in less than a five percent drop. Just my experience.
If not then I'd suggest a phone swap.
Also...Why in the world did you start another thread? If we scatter all these x is wrong with my phone posts across multiple threads it really hampers the effort to solve the problem.

If you researched the problem and tried the solutions offered, then the logical next step is to contact T-mobile for a replacement. This is an early release of a new phone; there will be defects. And you don't have to settle for a defective device/battery. I can assure you, I get battery life on par with my previous phone (8-20 hours depending on my usage)..so, bad battery life isn't a problem inherent to the phone. And my phone doesn't get warm with data usage. It sounds like you might have a defective battery or phone. If you aren't satisfied, don't settle...make 'em make it right.
I get about 5-10% battery drain overnight most nights and I am not mindfull of what apps are running or what is on. My experience obviously differs from yours. I do get great service in my bedroom where the phone is overnight. The other night I did experience a bout a 60% drop when I left the phone in my daylight basement (underground). I get crappy 2G service in my basement and it looses signal a lot. I think it adds some credibility to the searching for service slowly killing the battery. maybe try putting the phone in airplane mode before going to sleep. That should give you some indicator.
I'm now are 28 percent after 3 1/2 hrs with the display only using 13% if that..

You might have a bad battery or something. My first g2x rebooted constantly and drained the battery and got hot.
New one goes 8am to midnight with 20% battery left, on moderate usage. And even at the 20% left i can leave it overnight and it'll still have power in the morning.

The phone is going to get warm is use because the CPU is under load and that produces heat. As long as its not overheating this is normal.
Have either of you tried the factory reset? That fixes the idle drain for most people.
Also... Your phone is going to drain battery faster while actually in use no matter what you do. The LCD and data connection are the biggest battery drain for smartphones. Until battery technology improves, there is nothing that can be done about this. But like I said try a factory reset and you should see your idle drain improve dramatically.

Were you on wifi? Because if you weren't that much drain is within the norm. Web browsing = constant data connection = more power consumption = faster battery drain.
I had 10 hours of heavy use yesterday and had 25 percent left... 2.5 of those were in airplane mode cuz I was flying from Phoenix to Atlanta but I watched a movie during the flight and had music playing the rest of the time... during my layover which was 4 hours I browsed the web, watched a stream of the Celtics vs heat for a bit, more music... I plugged back in with 25% left and had 3h20m of screen on time... this battery is freaking awesome! I had drain issues initially but they went away and now I'm golden
when i did a factory reset, my phone was getting hot until i remember about the *#*# thing and changed that to wcdma/gsm auto. then my battery life got better.

Battery Drain is mostly Cellular radio
I too am have been looking for a way to have this phone last at least 8-12 hours with normal usage, but I don't think its going to happen unless there's some major update to the radio firmware coming in 2.3 Gingerbread..
All the evidence seems to suggest two culprits... for battery drain.
- First is the 4G radio, look around at almost ALL 4G enabled phones (whether on GSM at&T Tmo or Verizon), all eat your battery, from the very beginning EVO 4g, Verizon Thunderbolt, Mytough 4G every single one of those phones has the users complaining about horrid battery life. You can confirm this by looking at the battery usage on the G2X and you'll see that the number one use is Cell Standby (that's the cellular radio) on my phone its anywhere between 35% to 60% of total power used.... on kmy nexus one it used to be the display.
-Second, Tegra 2 is more power hungry , granted its a mobile SoC but its mainly designed for Tablets and such with beefy batteries, this is the reason that the Atrix comes with a 1950MaH battery, you can try and use SetCPU to lower the speed, but I have had minimal success.
Here's a test , when you don't need your phone put it on Airplane mode, for 24hours and watch HOW LITTTLE the battery drains.. reason the cellular radio isn't on..

I agree. These battery threads are driving me nuts.
Go in the other million threads and read
The thing that is strange to me is how quickly these phones charge. It seems to go from 0% to 100% in well under an hour. Was thinking I should try charging it while off (well, screen w/ battery only).
What???? Having the phone on makes my battery drain? WTFO?!?!?!
Seriously though, I have not experienced bad battery life on this phone. Last night I left my phone off the charger, gps, wifi and wifi calling on, and when I went to bed at 1030 I had 64% battery. At 700 this morning I had 54% battery. Only a 10% drain for me overnight, or a little more than 1% per hour.
All I've done to achieve this is the following (and I realize that supposedly you no longer have to condition Li-ion batteries):
-when I got the phone, I didn't charge it but instead let the battery die completely to where I couldn't even turn the phone on.
-charged the phone overnight w/o turning it on.
-let battery die completely again.
-charged phone overnight w/o turning it on.
-let battery die completely again.
-charge and use phone normally.
I've also rooted the phone and used Ti Backup to remove most all of the bloatware except wifi calling, but otherwise it's the stock rom.
I typically get an entire day of my normal use on this phone. If I use it alot, I have to top off the battery w/ my car charger on my way home from work. This isn't unusual. I had to do this w/ the blackberrys I owned and my evo when I was on Sprint. The battery life doesn't seem any better or worse for me than any other smartphone I have owned, and it's certainly better than my evo or my wife's evo, and both of those were rockin' custom roms and uV kernels.

Battery 100% charged?

So I read that a ton of ppl has issues hitting 100% battery charge, I'm also seem to be having the issue till I got and played Plants vs Zombies...after like 1 hour playing I was about to turn on the alarm and hit the bed and I just noticed my battery level, 100%....so I thought that it was an error and I locked the phone just to see on the lock screen "charged"....btw, when I started playing the battery was at around 92% and I've never seen 100% before on my NS.
How many ppl is able to get their phones to fully charge to 100%? and, does any of u installed or did anything in particular to fix the issue?
Hm, only had mine 2 weeks and have yet to get a 100. My epic would but it was a faux 100 if anything as it. Would drop down to around 98-96 immediately.

you can use that if u really want too get too 100% i used for a few weeks then just stopped caring. Its just the way samsung programmed it to pro long the overall life of the battery.
Yeah, mine caps at 95% normally. Might have a look at that program. How much shorter would battery life be if we let it charge to 100%?
If you leave the screen on (by any means, whether you were playing game, which requires you to have the screen on, or change the setting to have screen always on), it will charge to 100%.
will the battery life shorter with this trick or using that app to force to charging completely ?
Its not an issue. Samsung designed it that way. Its to help keep the battery healthy and extend its life.

I honestly don't see it being noticeably shorter life span. We keep phones for a max of 2 years now days. I rather have a full battery now then it last an extra few months. Battery's are cheap so we dont need them to last forever .
Well, I have used the phone while connected to the charger but never passed 96%, only after playing PvsZ I got the 100% and then the number went down till 96% and stayed that way after I closed the game.

Just an observation, but the graph at the top under where it says 1 day 19 hours clearly shows your battery going up 3 times. Which I was just going to pass up but I have a bunch of shots of my battery stats and none of them go up.

Battery Management
Hi, all.
I want to pass this tip along to anyone who want or need to conserve their battery for what ever reasons.
I have gone usually 3 day+ on one charge.
I'm running on stock rom. Froyo 2.2.1
It is rooted though
I use the phone moderately. Text occasionally.
I downloaded an app called "DataSwitch" by TomatoX.
I use wifi when I'm at home or work.
I have dataswitch activated when I don't need constant background data. ?I turn it on when I need to use it for surfing and such.
In Settings, there is also a toggle for background on/off, although I don't use this much.
With the data off, you can still get phone call and text msg.
I usually turn off data and wifi at bedtime.
On the third day, I'm usually down to 35%.
This may also be useful if you are low and can't get to a charge right away.
It may not apply to everybody, but it works for me..esp with only a 200mb data plan. Battery life is great!
lol look at that cell standby use your phone lol

Good one. But next time on, it would be more useful if you post the screenshots showing call duration and display time. With just this one screenshot it could have display on for just 5 mins or 50 mins. Its hard to tell.
Just now noticed, the tiny green bars in the screenshot (circled in red) come up when the phone is charging.
I noticed that (at least for my phone) if you connect it to wall charging it would reset the "time on battery" count but if i connected it via usb to pc it was charging, yeah slowly maybe but the timer never reset when connected via usb as if the phone said "well im charging but it doesnt counts since the guy its transfering data"(lmao yeah my phone is smart) so if you wait for 10% battery ans then go usb mode and charge it and use it and repeat i once got displaying 4 days 10 hours on battery haha.
While on my real stats my phone never last more than 18 hours ;/

I got my phone to say 2 days 15 hours once. As long as I don't charge it 100% the time on my battery continues to go up. I can plug it in while it has 10% left charge it till its 90% unplug it, and the time won't reset.
If anyone mistook my comment, I'm not really interested in claiming any specific record as the op as stated.
I simply meant to share my thoughts on "dataswitch" app and how I had applied it.
I think found it useful to limit data usage and to conserve the battery when I can't get a charge right away.
You'll be surprise how much battery life background data consumes.
The other part tech part of me also recognizes that battery memory exist...it may be best to "widen" your charge range (0% to 100%) when possible.
Well, I figured out what caused that.. My radio in my truck has a USB port that I plug my phone into to listen to my music. Worked great on my Ipod but it wouldn't charge my Ipod. However today when coming home, I plugged my phone in and it doesnt show to be charging, but when I looked at the Battery Use chart, it deffinately showed an increase.

This has helped my battery

This is pretty dumb and could be just me but ill put it out there anyway. My drive to work is about an hour each day. From the time I wake up and get to work its about an hour and a half. My phone would be fully charged when I left my house and end up mid 90s when I get your my job. Maybe low 90s on some days depending on how much traffic there is. When I get to work, my phone seems to die pretty quickly. My job is pretty boring atm so I am on my phone a lot.
Next though. My phone is unplugged for about 20 minutes before I get in my car. Always goes down at least 2 or more percent in that time. But now lately I've been using my car charger on the way to work. Get it fully juiced again even from such a little drain and sometimes it seems like I get double the time from that extra charge. I use the charger it came with at home and bought like a $10 car one from amazon.
There's no proof to what I said but it's been helping me. I was on synergy the past few weeks and just switched to team insomnia last night. Hope this helps someone
I have no idead what that your are trying to say. Switching roms helped you? Or a different charger?
I know what your talking about and I have the same experience just with the home charger, ever since I figured this out I always charge my phone at night and before bed around midnight or 1-2 a.m. I unplug it. I wake up at 9:30-10 I have about a 4% drop of charge and put the phone back on the charger till the phone says charged. Like this I have 3h screen on time with about 1-1.5h talking time. also I stream a lot of music from grooveshark/soundcloud/sirius xm and also use google music..lot of gtalk and video talk with my wifey
try it out guys and see yourself. It really makes a hell of a difference.
EDIT: @aypeeootrek he's trying to say that the battery life is better if you charge the phone wait till a few % drops and charge it again till full. (that's what I understood)
I think that's called the trickle
GS3
Or bump charging. It worked with my Dinc too.

if you are in a low signal area (inside buildings or whatever) then switch to "power saving mode" in the drop down menu.
when out of those areas, switch off the power saver.
if you aren't getting 24 hours from a single charge, then you got apps/widgets sucking up way too much power.
Another choice is buying a second battery. That way if you run low, you just swap out and have another however many hours to play.

The power saving setting really only helps when you are actively using your phone. Having it on or off with more or less be the same when it is idle. And if you get over 24 hours I could easily say you dont use your phone. A better way to judge battery life is by screen on time.

i use my phone to talk, email, and text. i guess i'm old school. but with 24 hours and a spare, i'll take it.

24 hours? I've only got that once and I was in a 4g area and didn't touch my phone for 95% of the time. I live in a 3g area and have did almost everything to improve life. I love the days when I get 16 hours. I have definitely found that low signal is hard on this phone battery.

Ya, I am finding a lot of silly statements like the one you were talking about. Everyone seems to have an outstanding WHBL (when hit by lightning) story of how utterly amazing their battery life is, but can't show the rest of the world how they do it. What saves my battery life? I carry an external 5000mA external battery I can just throw on the phone when I am not near a charger. Another trick, I took the battery % off of my screen. Seeing the exact amount really showed me, almost too exactly, how bad the battery life is on this phone. I have felt the same way about other phones before tho, once the Jelly Bean update comes out, which, hopefully, Samsung is probably waiting to release until the iPhone comes out, will fix all of these problems.
So you bump charge it?

The post below yours summed it up pretty well
Sounds like you need a hug, good luck.
I'm about to get a Galaxy S III on Monday, I do need to get an extra battery simply because I always like having a backup battery. Do all versions of the SIII use the same battery? I know when I switched from Verizon Nexus to GSM Nexus I had to buy different batteries for the GSM one.
And yes I'm getting a Verizon S III, I switched my Nexus to the GSM because Verizon killed the Nexus experience for me, but I still have the line so I figured may as well get it updated.
