Over 48 hours on a single charge w/ BT and WiFi

To make a long story short, my mom and I both got G2x phones on launch day. Two weeks to the day after our purchase, her battery died and refused to boot even while plugged into the wall charger (which I now know can be fixed by simply pulling the battery). I was busy at work and couldn't help her, and since it was the last day to return the phone within the 14 day period, I just told her to go ahead and return the phone for a replacement.
Prior to her replacement, we had pretty similar battery lives. I used mine more during the day, but she kept Bluetooth and other services running because she was used to an EDGE-only iPhone 3G where she never had to turn Bluetooth off. Our phones lasted between 10 and 12 hours depending on usage. Not great, but not terrible either.
Since she swapped hers out, her battery life is insane. I've attached a screenshot that shows 70% battery life after almost 24 hours. She had Bluetooth running 24/7 (notice it has the exact same usage percentage as Cell Standby) and WiFi running for a good portion of the time (though WiFi slept while screen was off). She had 4G running the whole time. While I know people might balk at the bad LG battery drivers, after 48 hours, she still had 17% battery life left. I apologize for not taking a screenshot--I didn't think about it until later that day. Though if anyone wants me to, I'll take one the next time her phone gets that far along.
I should mention that this is with no optimization at all. She did fully discharge the battery the first time she used it and charged it completely afterward, but that's it. The phone was unrooted and running stock everything with no special tweaks.
I'm very much considering going back to T-Mobile and seeing if they will swap it out. While mine doesn't seem to have the bleeding or other issues that other people have described, if I can trade mine out for a replacement that will quadruple my battery life, why not?

Wow that's amazing. I personally feel the G2x has excellent battery life. It has been way better than other Android phones I've had in the past (except for the original myTouch, I would get like 3 days out of that thing).
I wonder if the crazy battery life from your mom's phone is from the phone itself or the battery. I doubt T-Mobile will switch out your phone passed the exchange period (I'm a Tmo employee) but if they have any return G2x phones in stock, they should be cool to switch the battery out with you. I'm interested to see if it is indeed the phone or the battery.

That's a good suggestion. I'll experiment by swapping batteries with her to determine if it's her phone or her battery. I am inclined to think it's something different with the phone, but we'll see!

this would REALLY suck if it's true... because I got mine at Radioshack.. and I really loathe going to that store... ugh.

I also have amazing battery life. I can go 12 hours at work and still have 80% left. Got mine from the store on launch day.

Could you please post the manufactured date (back of the G2x Box) for the second phone? Saw some posts which said phones on or after 4/29 are really good without any of the previous issues.

Curious to see what the verdicts are. If we can get that kind battery life out of our phones, that'd be incredible!

Yesterday I pulled my phone off the charger at 8AM. Went all day. I leave Wifi and Bluetooth on. Made about an hour of phone calls. Occasional checking of a website here or there. Did not charge phone at night. when I went to bed around midnight it was at 25% or so. Did not put it on charger. This morning it was at about 20%.

Not to rain on your parade. But from your screenshot, it shows no voice calls at all and little to no display use. 24 hrs on a charge without every really using the phone isn't really an accomplishment. Now if she can get 24 hours on a charge and have actually used the phone at least moderately then that would be different. I'd like to see how long her battery lasts with actual use of the phone. That would be a more true indicator of the battery life.

I was going to state that... based on that... her screen was only on for a total of 30 minutes out of 1440 minutes... not a major accomplishment. These phones are meant to be used not just carried around like a flip phone from 2001.

Exactly! She could have pretty much accomplished the same thing by just leaving the phone turned off or just leaving it at home. Some of us would like to actually use our phones, not just have them around for decoration lol. Now if someone gets 24 hours on a single charge with actual use, then I'd love to see that thread as that would be useful information.

Did you start using Sensation right away after opening it or charge it first?

So, I've had my sensation for a week, it was nearly perfect. But I wasn't sure that it was the best unit, cause battery was used fairly quick, GPS kinda weak, and a slightly washed out screen. I took the 14 day advantage I had at Walmart, and just today headed out there after work to grab the last unit they had! I called like 5 diff. walmarts but only that one had one unit.
Even the box was in such pristine condition, compared to the one I bought earlier, even though both were new. The first box had a date of 5/27. This new one has 6/3, so I'm hoping the June units might be better. Both Taiwanese. I haven't even opened my new Sensation yet, feel excited all over again
Anyways, to come to the point, how did you all start using you new phone, did you just take it out, turn it on, and use it? Or kept it off, charged it all the way, then use it? The reason I'm asking is cause the first one I had, I kept it off and charged it all the way. During that process, the phone got extremely hot towards the bottom, I mean hot like I've never ever seen in any phone before. And it pretty much stayed that way for atleast 2 hours straight. I'm thinking that I maybe messed up the battery up, cause too much heat can damage them. What do you guys think?
Edit: Another thing on my previous phone: the battery gauge was wacky. I would use if for hours and it would stay at 100. Then suddenly show like 85 or something.

usually I will leave it off and charge it fully before using it. This time I turned it on right away, let it drain then charged it fully while off. I've only had my sensation less than a week so really cant ccomment on battery life. When you first get a phone though battery life will be worse because you play with it tons when you first get it

Yeah, mines seemed like a fluke, I've never had a phone do that before. This time, I'm thinking that I'll prolly turn it on before charging just to be safe.

My first two, I did. This one I used right away and today it's been unplugged for 11 hours and I'm still at 47%

I play with it until it fully dies, then I let it charge all the way; for the batteries sake. It last much longer that way.

I couldn't wait for it to charge completely.

I wasnt even out of the T-Mobile parking lot before I had my sim card in it and was messing with it lol.

Could you please tell us how your new phone is? I'll update my post when I check my box for the date but my battery does heat up and my power button is the slanted one.

Exactly....that's what most all manufactures recommend. I didn't notice it in the Sensation's manual, but I know I saw it in my G2X's manual.
For the last 5-6 devices I've had, I always run it dead from the box, then let it fully charge to 100%. As far as I can tell that really does help either calibrate the driver or condition the battery. I also do that pretty much every time its convenient.
I've never just charged it straight from the box.
I've always had great great battery life, under heavy use, for every phone I've had using that method.
I really don't know how important it is, but I know I've never had any of the battery issues that it seems many have with various devices.

Great advice, however I wanted to ask you that when you charged it back to 100% the first time, did you keep the phone off all the way? Also, did you perform any kind of a hard reset on it, and if you did, at what point?

I will surely report that info as well as panel info tomorrow after 7PM, as its late, and I havent opened the box yet. I was still trying to figure out the best way to start using the phone, as I didnt want to repeat the mistake I made last time.

No, I let it die...plug it back in, turn it on.
Some people do factory resets out of the box....I never have (out of the box)...
I get easily a full day, 14-16 hours, with consistent use. WiFi always on, gps on when needed, tons of web activity, light gaming, 100+ texts, dozen or so calls. That's pretty normal.
The Sensation seems to go from full to 90% in a hurry, but then really levels off. No idea why, but it's undeniable with mine. Also, this phone is by far the best I've ever owned when it comes to idle power consumption. I'll regularly leave it unplugged while asleep and it might go down 5% at most.
That's my experience.....hope it helps.

Now the only thing to figure out is when to factory reset the phone, as soon as I first turn it on, or after it has fully charged? Also, when fully charged, is it best to unplug it and then start it, or start phone while plugged in, and then remove the power cable once it comes up?

I really don't think ya have to get that nit picky...as far as when or how to unplug.
Pretty simple and hard to go wrong....
Out of the box....use it til it shuts off on its own
Plug it in....
Turn it on if ya need to receive calls etc...
Let it charge to 100%...
You're Golden
Repeat whenever you have the time...once, twice a month works for me.

I'm also use it out of the box until its battery drain and warning indication come out. Then I charge my battery.
I facing a weird condition during charging, where its goes up to 80 or 90% fast, but then to reach 100% very slow. It took 3.5 to 4 hours for my phone to reach 100%!!. I already use my phone for 15 days.

This is the "proper" way to condition a Li-Ion Battery. it's best for the battery life during every day use and into the long term. Ideally you should use it until it get's down to about 2-3% then charge fully, and repeat at least 2-3 more times. Your battery will thank you for it.
I had started to think that this tried and true method was NOT working on my sensation and then today, almost one week precisely after I'd gotten it I saw a huge, noticeable difference in battery life over the first 3-4 days.
Condition your batteries people! You and your phones will thank you for it!

I got the phone at Walmart the first day it came out and used it then charged it all the way.
Phone got very hot and I can not get it to last more than 6hrs on a charge no matter what I try.
(No GPS No WiFi No extra apps......you get the point)
Trying to return the phone to Walmart but they don't have any.
Something is definitely off her but I don't know if it's the phone or the battery.

Battery 100% charged?

So I read that a ton of ppl has issues hitting 100% battery charge, I'm also seem to be having the issue till I got and played Plants vs Zombies...after like 1 hour playing I was about to turn on the alarm and hit the bed and I just noticed my battery level, 100%....so I thought that it was an error and I locked the phone just to see on the lock screen "charged"....btw, when I started playing the battery was at around 92% and I've never seen 100% before on my NS.
How many ppl is able to get their phones to fully charge to 100%? and, does any of u installed or did anything in particular to fix the issue?

Hm, only had mine 2 weeks and have yet to get a 100. My epic would but it was a faux 100 if anything as it. Would drop down to around 98-96 immediately.

Only way to hit 100% is to use an external battery charger.

you can use that if u really want too get too 100% i used for a few weeks then just stopped caring. Its just the way samsung programmed it to pro long the overall life of the battery.

Yeah, mine caps at 95% normally. Might have a look at that program. How much shorter would battery life be if we let it charge to 100%?

If you leave the screen on (by any means, whether you were playing game, which requires you to have the screen on, or change the setting to have screen always on), it will charge to 100%.

will the battery life shorter with this trick or using that app to force to charging completely ?

Its not an issue. Samsung designed it that way. Its to help keep the battery healthy and extend its life.

I honestly don't see it being noticeably shorter life span. We keep phones for a max of 2 years now days. I rather have a full battery now then it last an extra few months. Battery's are cheap so we dont need them to last forever .

Well, I have used the phone while connected to the charger but never passed 96%, only after playing PvsZ I got the 100% and then the number went down till 96% and stayed that way after I closed the game.

ya the only time ive ever seen a phone stick on 100% for longer then 10 minutes is using SBC kernels

I'm running Formels MIUI, it comes with Pete#5....still....gonna test again with PvsZ in a bit, rt now the phone has been steady at 96% for the past 2 hours....man gotta sleep soon also...
***Update: PvsZ does work to go pass the 96%, I hit another 100%....

How many times is this very topic going to be discussed? And with all the info on xda, why is there so much false/incorrect information in this thread?

This has helped my battery

This is pretty dumb and could be just me but ill put it out there anyway. My drive to work is about an hour each day. From the time I wake up and get to work its about an hour and a half. My phone would be fully charged when I left my house and end up mid 90s when I get your my job. Maybe low 90s on some days depending on how much traffic there is. When I get to work, my phone seems to die pretty quickly. My job is pretty boring atm so I am on my phone a lot.
Next though. My phone is unplugged for about 20 minutes before I get in my car. Always goes down at least 2 or more percent in that time. But now lately I've been using my car charger on the way to work. Get it fully juiced again even from such a little drain and sometimes it seems like I get double the time from that extra charge. I use the charger it came with at home and bought like a $10 car one from amazon.
There's no proof to what I said but it's been helping me. I was on synergy the past few weeks and just switched to team insomnia last night. Hope this helps someone

I know what your talking about and I have the same experience just with the home charger, ever since I figured this out I always charge my phone at night and before bed around midnight or 1-2 a.m. I unplug it. I wake up at 9:30-10 I have about a 4% drop of charge and put the phone back on the charger till the phone says charged. Like this I have 3h screen on time with about 1-1.5h talking time. also I stream a lot of music from grooveshark/soundcloud/sirius xm and also use google music..lot of gtalk and video talk with my wifey
try it out guys and see yourself. It really makes a hell of a difference.
EDIT: @aypeeootrek he's trying to say that the battery life is better if you charge the phone wait till a few % drops and charge it again till full. (that's what I understood)

if you are in a low signal area (inside buildings or whatever) then switch to "power saving mode" in the drop down menu.
when out of those areas, switch off the power saver.
if you aren't getting 24 hours from a single charge, then you got apps/widgets sucking up way too much power.
Another choice is buying a second battery. That way if you run low, you just swap out and have another however many hours to play.

The power saving setting really only helps when you are actively using your phone. Having it on or off with more or less be the same when it is idle. And if you get over 24 hours I could easily say you dont use your phone. A better way to judge battery life is by screen on time.

not true. i speak from experience. from battery dead at 5p to 50% at 5p.
i use my phone to talk, email, and text. i guess i'm old school. but with 24 hours and a spare, i'll take it.

24 hours? I've only got that once and I was in a 4g area and didn't touch my phone for 95% of the time. I live in a 3g area and have did almost everything to improve life. I love the days when I get 16 hours. I have definitely found that low signal is hard on this phone battery.

Ya, I am finding a lot of silly statements like the one you were talking about. Everyone seems to have an outstanding WHBL (when hit by lightning) story of how utterly amazing their battery life is, but can't show the rest of the world how they do it. What saves my battery life? I carry an external 5000mA external battery I can just throw on the phone when I am not near a charger. Another trick, I took the battery % off of my screen. Seeing the exact amount really showed me, almost too exactly, how bad the battery life is on this phone. I have felt the same way about other phones before tho, once the Jelly Bean update comes out, which, hopefully, Samsung is probably waiting to release until the iPhone comes out, will fix all of these problems.

So you bump charge it?

I'm about to get a Galaxy S III on Monday, I do need to get an extra battery simply because I always like having a backup battery. Do all versions of the SIII use the same battery? I know when I switched from Verizon Nexus to GSM Nexus I had to buy different batteries for the GSM one.
And yes I'm getting a Verizon S III, I switched my Nexus to the GSM because Verizon killed the Nexus experience for me, but I still have the line so I figured may as well get it updated.

I am new to the nexus 5 community and I just got my nexus 5 about 2 days ago
After fully charging it I started using it , I have heard that nexus 5 has battery issues and that's why I only want you people to help me tell how the battery life of my phone is for a brand new device by seeing the screenshots of my usage.

Not bad. I would disable Wi-Fi always scanning available (even if Wi-Fi is off), location to start. That's not bad though and is about what I get, but you might be able to get better SOT.

the nexus 5 does not have battery issues, at all. it stupid people that themselves have issues, not the phone.

Seems normal to me ,I bought mine month ago

There are no issues with battery on nexus 5. I charge mine usually once in 3 days, my record without charge is about a week.
It really depends on how you use it. Under constant 100% load I think battery can be depleted under 5 hours, as in every other device.

i can use my phone very heavily, and deplete my battery in 6-8 hours. but ill still get 5+ hours screen on time.

Have you tried running the phone down till it switches off? I know it's not good practice to do that often but I like to do it with a new phone relatively early as it makes sure it's calibrated - sometimes phones can either switch off at 5% or, conversely, run on 1% for hours...

You don't ever need to do that as it calibrates every time you charge the phone. Also he just got the phone and isn't having any battery issues.

He means to break in a LIon battery the first three times you kill the battery and then don't take it below 20% after that.

That's not helpful and does more harm than good. Li-Po never needs to be user calibrated in any way.

I was just about to start a thread about something then I read this. So here's the deal. I agree that it's almost always user error and/or over expectation when it comes to battery. Stupid people are here to stay. I'm neither stupid nor expecting too much from my battery.
I've always been intrigued by how some experienced users get great battery and some get not so great. Has to be user error I always thought. I thought this because I was one of the experienced users getting great battery life. I mean GREAT. Way over 7 SOT all the time.
So a few weeks ago my first phone had an audio port issue that I had RMA'd. I received the new phone and set it up. It had crap battery. I'm talking less then 2 hours SOT. Same ROM, same kernel, same apps, same coverage for mobile and data, same usage. I set about looking for wakelocks and they all where the same as the first phone. Nothing was wrong on my end. I spent over a week troubleshooting. CPU frequencies and time in state where normal. Temps where normal. CPU benching was the same. Awake vs screen on was almost identical. The phone is sleeping like a baby when not in use.
So, using Occam"s razor, it would lead me to believe that not all batteries in the N5 are created equal. After getting off the phone with a google support supervisor a few hours ago he agreed. Another RMA process has been set up and I was promised this phone would make it's way back to LG so they can actually analyze the battery.
Like I said, I used to think the same way you do. Now I'm not so sure.

So a few weeks ago my first phone had an audio port issue that I had RMA'd. I received the new phone and set it up. It had crap battery. I'm talking less then 2 hours SOT. Same ROM, same kernel, same apps, same coverage for mobile and data, same usage. I set about looking for wakelocks and they all where the same as the first phone. Nothing was wrong on my end. I spent over a week troubleshooting. CPU frequencies and time in state where normal. Temps where normal. CPU benching was the same. Awake vs screen on was almost identical. The phone is sleeping like a baby when not in use.

oh, no, I 100% agree with you. just like our devices, that all aren't equal, that are all assembled in differing places, that all have smaller parts that are made in more different factories.. the batteries themselves will differ as well. it'll even probably fall onto a bell curve, where most are near the center, and less with better or worse. but 100% they vary.

Well I feel that there are always some exceptions , some phones may have a manufacturing defect and maybe the phone you are talking about did have one , but these manufacturing defects are mostly really rare.

You should be good to go...just keep an eye on it! Happy Flashing

I was just explaining what he said. The rumor is (supposedly backed up) that you kill the battery 3 times in a row but never take it close to dying after that and you get the best battery life possible because the battery works best if you only charge it between 20 and 80%. I think there may be something to it because new phones only last like half a day on the first charge but after a week last a day or longer for me. I won't derail this thread though as that's a debate that always loves to go on and I've never found hard proof either way but people who just write websites who supposedly sound smart and can word it quite eloquently.
That being said, I didn't necessarily agree with it, but I was clarifying what was said.

Thanks for clarifying. Keeping the battery between 20% and 80% is said to help with battery degradation, which after a year or two might affect how much one could get out of a full charge. Most won't find it practical to limit them self to only 60% of their total available battery pool though.
Even hitting 0% isn't as big of a problem as some may think as there is a reserve charge for protection. For instance, mine has full died on me twice due to a power outage (I even attempted a boot up) and I always full charge with no noticeable degradation after 8 months.
