[Q] 2.2 or above View Quest Slate 2 - General Questions and Answers

Can anybody please advise how to install 2.2 or above on a ViewQuest Slate 2?
Any help will be greatly appreciated!

I have one of these.
I'm qute happy with 2.1 and would be quite happy to stay howeer there are few things that really annoy me.
the first is the touch sensitive buttons. They have a haptic feedback I can't turn off.
second is there is somthing that keeps coming to life and draining the battery.
The third is there isnt a market, but I'm using androzip to copy over programs from my phone so not a major problem.
If these problems can be resolved I'm happy to stay on 2.1 id love flash but I suspect my cpu isn't supported.
I'm prepared to try any experiments.

When I connect mine to Windows 7 PC and set the mode on tablet that I could reach its internal storage, in the device manager properties for USB device you can find name MID EM83 and EM83 is also mentioned in the Build description of both these tablets. I think MID EM83 is the clue to find the real manufacturer of this 8" tablet with Telechips 8902 CPU. I have searched google and read slatedroid.com & androidtablets.net but I couldn't find who is the real manufacturer or confirmed working Android 2.2 or 2.3 firmware or custom firmware ROM's. Maybe you, a person who reads this post, know? I thought it is obvious that ViewQuest Slate 8 & a-rival NAV-PA80 have been made by the same manufacturer and I tried to update ViewQuest with update provided by a-rival for NAV-PA80/NAV-PA83

to update my 8" View Quest Slate2 AND IT WORKED!!!. I believe this proves that they both are made by the same manufacturer or on the same platform designed for Telechips 8902 CPU. I am sure that there are other users who have 8" tablet with Telechips 890x CPU like ViewQuest Slate2 or a-rival PAD NAV-PA80 who do search for modified firmware ROM's to update their device from Android 2.1 to 2.2 or even 2.3 version. If you know were to find these custom ROM's - please let us know!

every thread I find relating to this bloody view quest slate I find you have copied and pasted the same feckin reply,
I notice you have installed custom firmware on yours, what custom firmware did you use and have you got a DIRECT link to download it (not a link to the 125 page thread elsewhere) and what instructions did you use?
With the custom firmware you are using, do you have access to the android market? (the official google one)

CyanogenMod 7/ClockworkMod Recovery 5 for Slate2 / a-rival PAD NAV-PA80
Hello! I have used CyanogenMod 7/ClockworkMod Recovery 5 firmware modified by Fun_ for a-rival PAD NAV-PA80 because it is the same device as Slate2. You can find instructions here :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1101094
or files & instructions here:
http://androtab.info/telechips/firmwares - owned by firmware developer Fun_
I was following these instructions. So the sequence was:
Preparation1.
Go to androtab.info/telechips/firmwares.
Find a-rival PAD NAV-PA80/83 capacitive
Download
a.) Stock recovery backup tool - dump-recovery-signed.zip
b.) ClockworkMod Recovery 5 - arival80-recovery-signed.zip
c.) CyanogenMod 7 - arival80-cyanogen-signed.zip
Be sure it is for NAV-PA80/83 if you want it to use it on your Slate2 - I have used this firmware and I can confirm that it worked.
Preparation2. Entering recovery mode. To enter recovery mode hold 'volume-' button and holding 'power' button till you see Android robot - then release 'volume-' button. You are in stock recovery mode now. Use VOL- =next(down), VOL+ =prev(up), POWER=select, BACK=back)
1. Backup of stock recovery
* How to make backup of stock recovery
A. copy dump-recovery-signed.zip to root of SD card (e.g. /sdcard/update.zip)
and rename it to update.zip
B. install update.zip from stock recovery
2. Install ClockworkMod Recovery 5
* How to install ClockworkMod Recovery 5
Be sure to make backup of stock recovery before installing ClockworkMod Recovery 5!
A. Copy arival80-recovery-signed.zip to root of SD card and rename it to install update.zip
B. Start in stock recovery mode, install update.zip
Next time you boot into recovery mode clockworkmod will be booted.
3.make backup of stock ROM
Use buttons to select 'backup' option
4.wipe out / factory reset
if this is your first time when you are using modified Cyanogen firmware it is recommended that you wipe out/factory reset your tablet. Assume that all settings will be deleted, all personal data will be lost.
Use buttons to select 'wipe out/factory reset' option
5.install Cyanogen modified firmware
A.Copy arival80-cyanogen-signed.zip (CyanogenMod 7) to root of the SD card
B.Start recovery mode - ClockworkMod Recovery 5 should start.
C.Select to install arival80-cyanogen-signed.zip
Please be patient - there is no indication light for CPU activity
If you can see that process completed successfully, but you can't move to the restart option - restart the tablet with hardware reset button located near 'power' button. If you can move in the menu select 'restart'
6. touchscreen calibration
The first you have to do when the CyanogenMod7 firmware boots is to calibrate your screen - it is best that you do it in the first time - it saves time & brain cells.
7. if you have problems / suggestions or ideas please post them here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1101094
Regarding android market you have to download & install vending.apk for it to work. There are different Android Market versions. You need to do research to find out differences between them.

bumping this because i've just got one, but i can't even get it into recovery to try any of the above - any help would be appreciated

just worked out how to get into recovery .. so here goes
---------- Post added at 08:46 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:57 PM ----------
all done - and it works fine. few oddities here and there with a brief play, but i need to re-charge it properly so i'll have a good go later on.
rooted as well so i'll copy my titanium backup folder across from my phone and see what works.
just need to work out which model it is on rom backup so i can download google apps as well. will update as i find out stuff - there seems to be little information about this particular tablet about so it might help someone i guess
edit:
bit of a bugbear already - appears, on the face of it, to lock up the device if the screen goes to sleep - have to do a full reset. will see if that's turn-off-able ..

quick update.
angry birds works, but is a bit jerky. i imagine if it had a 'low graphics' option it would actually work quite well. it also takes an age to load.
fruit slice works well, as does robo defense - even zoomed in it runs quickly and looks pretty good.
homerun battle 3d works well as well, even without (i think) a decent accelerometer.
xpectroid spectrum emulator works well.
got a ton of apk's to install to try so will update later
---------- Post added at 10:42 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:50 AM ----------
you don't appear to be able to move things to the sd card either, so the 256mb internal memory does fill up very, very quickly.
also, quite a few apps start upside down - literally. not the worst thing in the world, but sometimes it's a pain
if you want to add apps to the screens, you have to manually add them as shortcuts->applications then select which one.
angry birds rio works quite well
plants v zombies doesn't work
kindle works well enough. swipe to turn pages is a little laggy, but is fine.
youtube app doesn't work.
facebook and twitter work well - widgets work well on screen.
gmail app doesn't work, probably because market app also doesn't work
more later
Later:
Latest version of the official facebook app didn't actually work and get FC'ing. Trying 1.7.1 and it appears to work ok .. so far

any more info on this i have just got my hands on one and would like to have a go at this

I have just got one of these today, i am wanting to root this thing as i just can't cope with it as is!
Just to ask, once i get this rooted, will i be able to access the android market?

Hi,
I´m a german a-rival pad 80 user and running CM7 from fun_ with google market.
You can find the gapps here at the end of the site.
Use Google Apps Version for CyanogenMod 7. To install gapps you have to put the "gapps-gb-20110828-signed.zip" on your SD-card, then go to the ClockworkMod Recovery and chose install zip from sdcard.
If you want put your apps to SD you must use Link2SD, it works well with the latest build.
If you have any questions you can also post at Android Hilfe in english.
bye
Thorsten
please forgive my bad english

3.0 Honeycomb Release, and a Lazy Saturday Morning

Good morning fellow Androidians! (i like the sound of that )
This has been a VERY exciting and adventurous morning for me! I have been researching the Android 3.0 Honeycomb SDK release built for the Motorola Xoom, and I have spend all this morning installing it to my Nook! To my surprise, it worked well, actually, AMAZINGLY well.
After the install, I had the Android Market, Google Maps, YouTube, and with logging in to my google account, I could download ANY android app that a normal Android device could.
And here is the best part.
I have ADOBE FLASH 10.2 working! Yes! Just downloaded the .APK in the browser, and voila, installed and working great!
Now some may ask, how did you install it? Rosenbaa29, HOW did you do it? Actually, it was fairily difficult, but if my father and I could do it, anyone can
These are the directions written by Will Shanklin, all credit goes to him.
***NOTE: HONEYCOMB CAN NOW BE INSTALLED TO YOUR NOOK'S INTERNAL MEMORY TOO. SEE THIS THREAD FOR INSTRUCTIONS. THIS THREAD IS FOR SD CARD INSTALLATION.
* UPDATE 2/8 MORE FIXES:
(quoted from dev's thread)
"v04 - 02/07/2011
increased touchscreen sensitivity and made touchscreen more usable close to the borders (kernel change)
fixed heap size issue to get much more programs running (e.g. nook app, kindle app, etc.)"
Those updating from the previous version, see updating section at bottom
Here's how to get Honeycomb running on your Nook Color right now.
Credit to dev deeper-blue (Rafael Brune) whose thread can be found here: Android 3.0 Honeycomb Image - xda-developers
1. Download the image:
nookhoney04.img.zip
Torrent: nookhoney04.img.zip (might be faster than either of the above options - of course you'll need a torrent client like bittorrent)
Unzip the image onto your computer using WinRAR on PC, or or Stuffit Expander (on Mac).
2. Get an SD card, at least 4GB.
Some had problems with 4GB cards, others said the image stalled burning, but then it worked anyway. Worth a try, but larger than 4GB, you should be fine.
3A. PC Users:
- The usual program for this, Win32DiskImager, isn't working with this large file. So download WinImage, and under 'Disk' choose "Restore Virtual Image to Physical Drive." Change the files shown at the bottom to "all files" and select the file.
On Mac:
3B. Mac Users:
- Open a terminal window
-Find which drive the sd card is mapped to: type in the terminal this:
diskutil list
- Be very careful to identify the SD card and not your hard disk. Be VERY careful.
- Now unmount that drive typing this:
diskutil unmountDisk /dev/disk#
(My computer is was disk2 replace # with your number. Do NOT use the disk#s)
The computer should say: Unmount of all volumes on disk was successful
Type:
dd if=nookhoney04.img of=/dev/rdisk# bs=1m
Everything needed should copy right over to the card.
4. Power down your Nook, insert the microSD card, and it should boot into Honeycomb!!!!!!
Installing the Android Market on the Nook Color running Honeycomb:
1. Download this version of the Market (2.2.11).
2. Download GoogleServicesFramework.apk.
3. Place the files in your adb tools folder (or platform-tools on the newer version - wherever adb.exe is)
4. Open a command prompt in that folder, and issue the following commands:
adb shell mount -o remount,rw /dev/block/mmcblk1p2 /system
adb push Vending.apk system/app/Vending.apk
adb push GoogleServicesFramework.apk system/app/GoogleServicesFramework.apk
adb shell
cd system/app
chmod 6755 Vending.apk
chmod 6755 GoogleServicesFramework.apk
exit
adb reboot
Then go to apps, open the market, sign in. If the Market won't open at first, reboot and try again.
**Overclock instructions greyed out until new kernels are confirmed working with the new update**
Overclocking Honeycomb to 1.1GHz (might work, might not, might work then stop working):
Credit goes to dalingrin, his thread: [FYI]http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=925451
1. Download uImage (extract the uImage file somewhere on your computer)
2. If you haven't yet booted Honeycomb, skip to 4. If you've already booted it, see 3.
3. With the Nook booted into Honeycomb, connect via adb, and issue the following:
adb shell
cd data/dalvik-cache
rm *
exit
. . . and then power off your Nook immediately, without opening any apps. It's probably best to power it off with a hard reset (hold power down 10-15 seconds).
4. Remove the SD card, and place it back in an SD reader.
5. Open the folder (it should say boot) and make a copy of that uImage file on your computer. If you discover later on that the overclocking kernel doesn't work, simply replace the new one with this original that you're backing up now.
6. Now replace it with the uImage folder you downloaded earlier. Reboot, and enjoy the overclock!
Updating
To preserve much of your data, first, you'll need to root. See our stickied root Honeycomb on the Nook thread. This has nothing to do with whether the Barnes & Noble ROM is rooted or not on your Nook.
Now, while still on version 2, do a complete backup with Titanium backup.
Then, open a command prompt in your adb folder and enter the following:
adb shell mount -o remount,rw /dev/block/mmcblk1 /
adb pull sdcard/[path to your adb folder, such as c:/sdk/tools/]/honeysd
Then update to v2 by the procedure above. Then root again by the procedure in that thread.
Now open another command prompt in the same place:
adb shell mount -o remount,rw /dev/block/mmcblk1 /
adb push [path to your adb folder]/honeysd/ sdcard/
Then restore apps in Titanium Backup (one at a time, starting with your most essential apps is recommended. This is still an early build and some apps can causes crashes).
You should have all your apps now!
Features currently not working:
- not much to mention - lets play with this new update and see . . .
***note that you may need to turn your screen off/on once after every reboot to avoid touchscreen lag (much like w/Nookie Froyo)"
Have a great week, and if you have ANY questions or comments, let us know on this forum!
Wow great effort! A few more links to where we can download these files would help.
Although... I don't have a nook Tablet so do you think this will work on other tablets too?
Specifically the elonex e-touch 10
http://direct.asda.com/Elonex-eTouc...-Music-10gb-storage/000505981,default,pd.html
The specs are;
1024X600 Pixel screen
Android 2.1 (Upgrade to 2.2 out)
1GHZ Processor
256MB Ram
The ram seems a little low but seen as its cough *cheap*.... I couldn't say no!

You definitely have the specs to support honeycomb. Currently, the eTouch 10 runs android 2.1, but I will definitely figure out how to get a 3.0 release for it.
The Nook is a total iPad alternative, especially if we get an extremely stable android release for it, even if its only Gingerbread. How long have you had your tablet? What do you think about it?

I've ordered and paid for it, I just need to pick it up in the store. Its supposed to be delivered in 3-5 days. So Tuesday hopefully.
Theres actually a fair amount of folks that have bought it.
http://www.androidtablets.net/forum/zenithink-zt180-10-generation-1/v
Unfortunately there is no app/rom development for it due to lack of support (Maybe as its just been released in the UK). I've been looking at support for similar spec tablets (Galaxy Tab ect) its just a question of whether it'll all work.
If we can get honeycomb working for it, it could be huge on XDA. A £129 tablet that has Honeycomb... yes please! And seen as your from the US it should come to Wal-Mart at some point (ASDA is owned by Wal-Mart).
Anyway, yeah any support would be greatly appreciated.

ok.... question from a lurker here....first of all, as a newer owner of Android OS, (an unREVOKED, rooted Evo), I'm trying to help my dad with his new "gadget"... it's a 7" tablet, google iRobot that came from China and has andoid 3.0 Even when he attempts to download from the installed App Market (not a true version of Android Market it seems...) most apps tell him there is no phone associated with the account... AppBrain doesn't work either.... any method or resource that would be useful to him? Most of the icons on the device mimic Apple's, such as the Safari, Settings, etc...
He's 60... trying to download card games, etc lol... any and all help would be appreciated!

Well you know where to go! And let us know how it is when you get it, I might just have to grab one for dev purposes! We will be golden if we can get honeycomb on it.

The thing is, you need to log into market with your google information on an android phone to activate "android market" on your specified google account, then you can use that google email to access any android features that may later come. Does that make sense?

The thing is for me, I already have my droid pro on verizon, so I can access the market on my nook as long as I use the same email that I used on my droid. So see if you can use a friends phone. You would need to back it up, then do a settings_>privacy->factory reset on it. Then when it starts back up, enter your gmail account information and download at least one app from the market. then he can do the factory reset on it and put on his old email and information again. Let me knwo if that is a possibility for you.

It should be officially released in about a month for you!

[DEV] unofficial CyanogenMod 9/ClockworkMod Recovery 5 for Amlogic AML8726-M tablets

this is a work-in-progress development project for porting CyanogenMod 9 (ICS/4.0.4) and ClockworkMod Recovery 5 to Amlogic AML8726-M tablets.
this is not perfect at all. and I'm very busy. progress will be very very slow. I may not be able to answer your question/request. if you have some idea for improvement, please do it freely.
there is no support from any makers/vendors. you must agree all risks by installing non-supported files, it may brick your tablet, and you may lose official support/warranty.
* YOU MUST READ CAREFULLY POST#1, #2, AND #3!
* DO NOT USE IF YOUR TABLET IS NOT LISTED BELOW. IT WILL BRICK YOUR TABLET!
* project page

* How to boot ClockworkMod Recovery 5
1. download recovery.zip and unzip it
2. put aml_autoscript and uImage_cwm on root of SD card
3. insert SD card
4. power on
you can flash uImage_cwm directly into recovery partition. then, you can boot recovery with VOL+ + POWER.
ClockworkMod Recovery 5 can't install official update.zip. if you want to reinstall official ROM, use uImage_recovery in official ROM.
* How to control ClockworkMod Recovery 5
for ainol NOVO8 Advanced
VOL-/jogball down: down, VOL+/jogball up: up, POWER/jogball push: select, SEARCH/BACK: back
* How to install CyanogenMod 9
1. download update.zip and put it on internal NAND flash or SD card (don't unzip it)
2. reboot recovery
3. install update.zip
4. wipe data/factory reset *1
5. reboot
*1 only if you are upgrading from non-CM9 ROM (CM9 1st install)
* issues
- mic input(audio record) doesn't work.
- accelerometer orientation on Digma iDx7 is wrong. please disable it for now.
- scaling and rotating are not worked for hardware accelerated video. video is always displayed as fullscreen and landscape. please use media player which has fullscreen mode (no UI parts).
- to use USB mass storage mode, /sdcard needs to be mounted. i.e. SD card need to be inserted, or, internal NAND flash need to be mounted on /sdcard (by Settings -> Storage -> Storage configuration -> Use internal storage).
- TS calibration is missing. resistive touch screen will not work.
* random notes
- external SD card and internal NAND flash
on CWM, external SD card is mounted on /sdcard. internal NAND flash is mounted on /emmc and referred as "internal SD card".
on CM9, external SD card is mounted on /mnt/sdcard. internal NAND flash is mounted on /mnt/nand.
- ubifs
no ubifs support for now. which is better, yaffs2 or ubifs?
ubifs should be supported if clockworkdmod is used as backup tool for official rom.
- rootfs
currently ramdisk in kernel is used as rootfs. modifying kernel by hand is not so smart.
should try to make initrd separately and pass it via bootm 2nd arg.
- reboot
reboot doesn't work. if power is connected, reboot will work, but power off also act as reboot
reboot recovery/bootloader doesn't work at all. use VOL+ while power on.
- memsicd
is running to use accelerometer (and magnetic field sensor). it also tweak axes by ro.sf.hwrotation and ro.sf.gsensorposition.
- magnetic field sensor
is detected but not worked/not existed. magnetic field aware apps may not work correctly.
hi
hello
works great.
You are really great.
your work with the de novo 8 will be finally a good tablet.
sorry I do not speak English
good luck
Thank you very much from France for your work !!!
I will try this version as soon as possible.
Bye.
First of all: Thank you! It looks great! ;
But, the "- no ubifs support" means I can't mount sd-card or connect internal memory to pc?
I tried, but it not works...
Thanks again!

I can't promise my CM7 port will be good for you. I'll do what I can do, but I can't do what you want.
thank you for your cooperation!
from my personal experience, probably some non-dev people will start to complain "XXX is not working! I need it! please support it asap!". and, 1 month after, "XXX is still not working! terrible! tell me current status of your work!".
this is development project. my files are just for dev people, and non-dev people who know dev work is really difficult or need a lot of time.
my git repo are pushed to github. anyone who can build android/cyanogenmod can build my CM7 for novo8 with it. (how to build is around here and there. don't ask here)
about me(currently only 1 dev here), I'll work for this project only on my free time. I don't have enough time as usual. nothing may be changed within a month. don't ask ETA even if I say "I'll do it soon".
as a fact, on my another project, some people waited some months to get working accelerometer.
test report is always welcome from everyone. but don't expect that issues/missing featues will be fixed if you can't fix yourself without effort.
if you don't like my CM7, please use another one. I never say my CM7 is best, I don't force people to use my CM7.
I'm looking ZT-280 gingerbread (it seems CM) rom. I think something can be used for us. e.g. they have latest mali modules
there is also Gadmei T720 (probably froyo) rom posted on www.chinadigitalcomm.com. I'll check it too.
if you know another rom for other AML8726-M based tablets, please tell me.
USB device function, mount from PC, seems to be working.
USB host function is also working.
paths in vold.fstab are wrong so SD card and USB disk can't be accessed in CM. I'll fix it in next image.
HDMI output can be enabled via set_display_mode.sh command. it may need to connect HDMI cable before booting. screen is not scaled. 720p is shifted, probably set_display_mode.sh need to be tweaked.
I need to check how it works on stock rom.
Its really great to see that some initial work is being done for that niche-tablet with great hardware potential.
I really can't await for the first working GB rom on the novo 8.
@fun_ As you mentioned yourself to have less time to work on the rom, would it be possible to share the source? As it might be a good base for other people to help improving your work.
Cheers

really soon unless no one prevent me by posting worthless question.
(for me, soon is one of which, within a day, within a week, within a month, within a year, or never happen)

I forgot to write (and did it just now) "don't ask ETA" on post#9.
HDMI output is tweaked. remote controller is working properly now.
20111023 files are uploaded.
repos are pushed to github. see OP. some tips should be added (will do later).

fix small graphics issue
You are really cool man. Nice job.
Excellent development, Mr. fun_!
I plan to do a write up in my blog about this. As for your questions about Zenithink ZT280 of different form-factors, it's unclear whether they based on Android 2.3 or -- most probably for me, at least -- on Android 2.2.
Together with Ainol Novo 8 and Gadmei T820 there's another device looking like an Ainol's rebrand: Aigo M801.
Can anyone with this build make some screenshots, or better video clips and post them (link) here? Of interest are:
-- 2D (GUI rendering/video decoding and rendering) hardware acceleration/performance, preferably with some comparison to stock A2.2;
-- overal agility of the build, maybe some benchmarks;
-- what doesn't work at this point?
Thank you! Can't wait to publish this Mr fun_'s great breakthrough for my readers in English, Russian, Japanese.

I think 2D is not so fast due to screen size. hardware video decoding doesn't work. I didn't use stock rom well (only few days). I need to reinstall stock rom to check some things.

I'm not sure benchmark is meaningful at this stage. anyway, I'll post 0xbench result soon.
(but some 2D/3D score may not be reliable because it reaches limit(refresh rate) easily on 0xbench)
is there any other good benchmark app? I don't like Quadrant.
http://www.glbenchmark.com/ looks nice but I need to register to get result.
i/o may be slow. I feel lags e.g. while installing app.

yes, I looked up these devices myself (was actually watching Nova since August), and then there's at least 3 models of Zenithink 280.

Hah! I admire your speed, Sir. CM7 Team must get you as their "official" developer ASAP. (In fact, I have a vested interest in that: I run CM7 on my Nook Color since last winter, and if you ask me, they stuck on hardware acceleration for Nook)
I think 2D is not so fast due to screen size. hardware video decoding doesn't work. I didn't use stock rom well (only few days). I need to reinstall stock rom to check some things.
Screen size/pixel count, or resolution has no effect on 2D HW accelerated rendering as long as Mali400 MP's limit on pixel count is not broken. 1280x768 is well within that limit. Hardware video decoding worked quite well in stock (A2.2) for 1080p/720p quite high bitrates, so please don't lose it, LOL.
I'm not sure benchmark is meaningful at this stage. anyway, I'll post 0xbench result soon.
(but some 2D/3D score may not be reliable because it reaches limit(refresh rate) easily on 0xbench)

Nobody likes Quadrant. It's the Quadrant of A2.2 vs. Quadrant of CM7 that matters, on the same Ainol Novo
http://www.glbenchmark.com/ looks nice but I need to register to get result.
i/o may be slow. I feel lags e.g. while installing app.
That would be an overkill, sir.http://media.xda-developers.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif. Usual Neocore, Nenamark scores will be fine.
I'm not sure what/how works on stock yet "work" things are listed on OP.

You achieved a TON already, during last 2-3 days. Question is, can you do ALSA/Open GL ES/NEON/stagefright work at least no worse than in stock A.2.2? Original/stock FW coders struggle with it since this April and stay at A2.2 still. Yet Nova has it, but the quality of HW support is questionable.

[Q] LC-Power MIRA-1 / M105F Andorid 4.0.4 Questions

Hello,
I do hope my questions fit in here.
I recently bought the LC-Power MIRA-1 10.1" tablet. In google play it is called "unknown M105F"
the tablet has a 1,2 GHz A10 - ARM Cortex A8 CPU and a Mali 400MP GPU
i do have some experience with backup/root/uc&oc and even custom mods with my motorola defy phone (currently running cm7.2 stable)
when "playing" around with my defy i found it was sold in big numbers and is very well supported not only here but in any number of other communities. however, since my new tablet is pretty new to the market and no brand tablet, finding information on it is near impossible.
i do hope this will change in the future, especially since I really feel that my tablet is well suited for a number of tasks and with the price tag of ~150 EUR might even have a chance of finding its way in the hands of many people
anyway, even if the tablet is fine as it is now, it could be better. i am talking about modifications and this is what this thread is about.
1) BACKUP
in case i screw up, I really would love to have the possibility of resetting everything(!) back to factory defaults.
with my defy it is as easy as downloading the official sfb and flashing it with rsd lite
this wont work here for obvious reasons
is there a possibility to download the firmware to the pc (from the tablet) and later restoring it? probably not
so the only way left is nandroid backup?
easier said than done with a new device and without root...
also, i would very much prefer to have a backup without root / be sure to be able to remove all modifications i made like installing clockwork mod and rooting...
2) ROOT
for various reasons I'd like to have root. according to my information, rooting 4.0.4 is dependant on the device.
considering i have an unknown device, short of trying every possibility, what else could i do/try?
3) UNDERCLOCK/OVERCLOCK
I would LOVE to try to UC and OC the tablet. I know this might fail miserabely, but I could try.
IF i had root and any idea on how to find (again, short of trying every possible app) a working app.
any ideas?
4) GENERAL CUSTOMISATION
i learned that a well made custommod (like 7.2 for my defy) can make a huge difference in customisation and performance.
I would be willing to try a stable custommod but for now, I dont think that is viable since they usually are device specific.
So all I can do is use another launcher and hope for the best. I really like the performance, functions and especial the ability to customize the AWD Launcher that came with the cm7.2 for my phone.
According to google play the awd launcher is not compatible with my device. i cant imagine why, but there it is.
now, is there a way to still try it?
and what launcher comes closest to the performance, feel and customizability of the awd launcher (i do NOT care about special visual effects on which most launchers seem to concentrate)?
5) SIMILAR DEVICES
the best way to approach all those questions might be to find a (very) similar tablet and try to extrapolate answers from there onto my device.
however, I have no clue on how to figure out what chipset my tablet uses and what other information might be needed to try it that way
---
thats it for now
any and all help will be appreciated!
thank you for reading this
Catwiesel
Hello
okay, I have some news...
since no one had anything to say I went ahead and started trying stuff out...
Apparently, the tablet is rooted by default (or my measurement of being rooted is wrong):
- when i run the app root checker, it says it is rooted
- when i run adb shell / su the prompt is root:directoy #
- i can create and delete files from /system/app
still, something is up...:
- using the adb shell i can create a file in /system/app (touch test.tst)
- if i try to delete/move anything in the adb shell from /system/app apparently the file can not be found
- it works in terminal emulator
- ive installed superuser, but have yet to see the "application asks for superuser rights"
- with the default file browser or es file explorer i can not get to / (stuck in /sdcard) EDIT: Resolved, layer8 problem!
ive also tried some overclocking apps
- they either do not go beyond 1.2ghz (stock) - the apps however is more or less to uc, not oc
- they crash the tablet even with 1248mhz - maybe the scaling gouvanours fault?
- underclocking seems to work (by accident i set the mhz from 1200 to 60 and well... it was SLOW)
i also found out some stuff (quick info system pro)
- ARMv7 processor rev 2(v71) (ARM Cortex A8 1,2GHz - at least according to the tech sheet at the manufactorer)
- sun4i
so, i wonder:
- is the tablet actually sold rooted? then why do i not get superuser permission popups?
- is my hardware not overclockable with (those) apps (i have) and/or do i actually need a custom kernel (ive read abput self compiled kernel for sun4i and another tablet)
ive gotta say, even with a bit of experience in android (acutally, very little) and a bit of linux (not too much, but decent enough) i am sorta confused
...not alone
I´d bought 2 devices LC Power Mira 2 yesterday...they should be delivered on friday...so hang on...you´re no longer alone...
It could be that the device is rooted...as far as I know...
Google runs some kind of an quality assurance by denying some "nobrand" manufactures the total Android 4.0 compatibility.
For an example the Arnova (Archon´s budget line) 10b G3 is running 4.0 but without the Play Store, ´cause the device is not fully supported as an "Quality Android 4.0 Device" and you have to use a custom rom on that tablet.
That´s one reason to spend 5 Euros more for the Mira2 which have it all onboard...or am I wrong...?

Yes, indeed, at least the MIRA-1 tablet does come prerooted. This is of course nice (since I do not have to try root it myself) but also troubeling, since there is a good reason that android devices usually are not sold rooted. The bigger problem however seems to be that the superuser app is not working properly, i.e. I do not get the "this app is requesting superuser acess" question and probably for the same reason can not get my file browser (ES file browser) to go into the / directory.
what and if other apps could have trouble with the root access that apperently not every app is "finding" i dont know. i do hope not!
however, using the android sdk or shell emulator, all kinds of SU operations can indeed be executed.
concerning your google play store question (was it a question?), yes, the MIRA-1 tablet has google play installed and it can be used without any peticular limitation. its a safe bet that the mira-2 will be able to, too.
my experience with overclocking the tablet does not bode well. even a 48Mhz (smallest step) increase will freeze it. I have tried multiple apps.
i do not have any absolute answer so far. it could be that the oc apps have trouble with the root or are plain the wrong apps or simply that the cpu is already at its absolute limit and just can not be oced.
further investigation into this issue has revealed that apparently other tablets with similar hardware configuration may be able to overclock but apparently it would be neccesary to edit config files and with those compile the kernel. this is far beyond of what i can do and would be willing to do.
i am a bit sad about that, then yeah, the tablet is nice and good enough for me and worth the money, but a bit more speed could not hurt. it does happen that the tablet gets unresponsive for .5-1sec when browsing the web.
one last thought. the gpu does seem to be pretty "powerfull" (please, do not take me to literal.)
but i have yet to find any game that does not run smooth and looks good. according to my information i came across, the gpu is indeed well known for its good performance in 3d and full hd playback
(one exception. snes emulator is unplayable slow. but here i too blame the cpu, not gpu)
...
...sounds good to the fact that I won´t expecting more for this price. Hey 157€ is´nt very much for an 10.1" tablet...
...I´d got also my LG P990 as Android device and smartphone...believe Me...I know what it means being betrayed...no updates...Tegra ? - nVidia ?...I don´t wanna talk about it...lol
It´s rooted and I never got problems with some apps about this fact...ok it´s still on 2.3...thanks LG, by pretending the update comes in May 2012...
I´d send an e-mail to the support of LCpower, by asking about an list of compatible 3g Sticks...10min. later...Answer and an Exel-file with the whole list...great service...´til now...
I just hope that I´d bought 2 "nice" family tablets for a few funny games, sometimes a movie, some social networking...nothing more.
Hope I did´nt misunderstood something here...
...is it only possible with another Explorer (like Astro and ES) to get to the files of an external SD Card or not ???

well, the external sd card behaves a bit strange (at least for my understanding of android)
in short:
we have 2+1 memories in the tablet:
1 internal memory (small, i think 256mb, quite full with the android os and the apps)
1 other internal memory (the 8GB)
1 slot for the sd card, the +1 memory
now, everything begins at / (i figure this is the small internal memory)
the 2nd internal memory with 8gb is mounted under /mnt/sdcard and i believe /sdcard (where i would expect the sdcard!)
the sdcard itself can be found at /mnt/extsd
es file explorer has some trouble with that. if you launch it, it will start in /sdcard
since it does not recognize root, you can not go to /
since you cant type in the path by hand you can not go to /mnt
so apparently you cant browse the sd card with es file explorer (or i havent figured it out yet)
the preinstalled file explorer has no trouble with it at all. in fact, it even actually sends you to the right memory when you tap the corresponding symbols (as preinstalled file explorers go, it is actually not so bad)
ive tried setting up some symlinks but failed. maybe i did it wrong, maybe it just wont work.
another possibility to fix it could be editing fstab. but this could be dangerous and/or cause more problems then it helps
i filed that as a minor inconvenience to be adressed when im bored enough
...
Ok...this means...that I just hope that the Mira2 is accepting my microSD16GB and I can use it quite as normal...
In 2.3 it´s still the structure: " /mnt ---> /mnt/sdcard ---> /mnt/sdcard/_ExternalSD"
Is this structure changed in 4.0 ?

well on my mobile phone (motorola defy with cm7.2) i have /sdcard and /mnt/sdcard - actually being the sdcard
i also have /sd-ext which is empty
i dont know if that is the default for all android versions and/or if there are differences in sd-card mount points in android
however, the behaviour of the phone seems more logical (or its just that i am used to it)
whatever it is... the sd card of the tablet can not be accessed by /mnt/sdcard/ANYTHING
however, further research especially with the es file browser has shown that indeed you can browse the sd-card /mnt/extsd by switching the two in the favorites options.
so, maybe it makes sense, maybe it dont.
maybe its andorid 4.0.4 conform, or not.
what is important is that apps apparently dont mind (they do get installed on the 8gb internal memory mounted at /mnt/sdcard and /sdcard) and so far have yet to refuse to work/show strange behaviour
also, it is possible to move/copy etc files between /mnt/sdcard and /mnt/extsd and browse both directories, at least with the default android file explorer as well as es file browser.
So...a little update...the 2 devices are now in our hands...for about one week...
....and everything I can telling 'bout them...
,,.they're working great. Not a single bad issue, no freezes, and as far as we can see...
...for a price around 160€ there is no better tablet on the market.
Since yesterday I run the game Wild Blood (Unreal Engine 3 Game) which is most famous for an app who killed some tablets and phones...but nit the mira2 ...it's playable.
The device was also rooted "out of the box" but I can't find a single problem with the external SDcard or other USB Hosts I tested.
Sent from my MIRA-2 using xda app-developers app
Had the same issue thanks for the help guys

Root procedures in following post.
Useful Information and Root Procedure
Driver links and support files
Explay Russia
Note that everything is in the Russian language. Use Google Chrome.
1. Program for flashing. This looks similar to Kies program for Samsung devices. As the factory ROMs appear to be img files, this is required to flash them. The PDF file can be translated via Google Translate.
2. Original Firmware (ROM) version 1.01
3. Drivers for Win8 and all other previous versions.
Root Procedure
1. Go ahead and take your OTA to version 1.02 (54mb download)
2. Install your drivers on your PC
3. In Settings/Security select "Unknown Sources" (this is important as you will need to install an APK manually)
4. Go to this thread, and download the Framaroot apk version 1.7.1 apk.
5. Copy the APK to your Internal or External memory
6. Install ES File Explorer from the Play Store
7. Open ES File Explorer and navigate to the location of the framaroot 1.7.1 apk. Select it to install.
8. Long press the word Boromir and it should install superuser and the SU Binary.
9. Reboot Phone when prompted.
Now, I had to install it twice, but it worked the second time. Simple. You can use ES File Explorer to set the /System to RW.
I also went to the Play Store and installed Busy Box.
Compatible Apps confirmed working
Google+ version 3.5.3.42448346.apk
Copy to SD, use Es File Explorer to install.
Ok, so my thoughts on this device.
1. Cheap price for what you get. Good display, quad core CPU.
2. Build quality is pretty good, as the back cover is aluminium.
3. Gorilla Glass (although I'm not quite sure) gets fingerprints quite easy.
4. Bone stock Android OS. No manufacture skins!
As the device is primarily targeted in Russia, it only has 2 languages. English and Russian. Although looking at the internals of the ROM show support for 6 languages? Seems somebody was lazy. The launcher appears to be a Go Launcher or similar like Apex. Not many options, so I installed my favorite Nova Prime.
There doesn't appear to be any Power Settings, so I installed SetCPU to get governor control. If they have these settings, then they are hidden somewhere. The device also ships with developer options unlocked.
The phone comes shipped with about 10 Yandex apps. This is the major search engine in Russia. These I deleted from /system as to not use memory/battery. The others I uninstalled.
The OS design show signs of being in a hurry. Or rather the people who set up the default layout. The clock, located on the 3rd panel??? Some app icons just sort of scattered on various panels? Also, occasionally, you get a pop-up in Russian, when the device is set to English. Not sure if it's one of the included apps or not.
All in all, once you root and delete the yandex apps, change launchers, the device is quite snappy. What I refer to as a $200 Nexus! Well, a budget Nexus anyhow.
I just didn't want you to feel lonely Sir, so thought I'd say hi

Yeah,, thanks mate!
Seeing this is a Russian (aka chinese) device, most of the talk is on 4PDA. So far, a decent device. Will see how far I can push the CPU
Have a problem with Google+

I haven't tried, but will check it out.
Looks like G+ doesn't want to be compatible with low end devices. Will try de-compiling and see if it can be ported.
Keep in mind Google+ is being replaced with Google Hangouts.

Found an older Google+ version that installs and runs fine. Check my post #3 for the download.

In specs and images it was posted as (will insert image later)
(all is rather optimistic and NOT what it came like!)
it appeared as(will insert image later1)
and issues with me trying (and achieving some sort of control level) there from
(will insert image later)
varied degree of success working on it gets me to (will insert image later2)
So, I have managed to disable some apps, once managed to get mobile networking connections to the 1Mobile Market and get some apps to work, but not GooglePlayStore. Most of remaining (and new apps) are not in Chinese no more, so I am very hopefull, that with rooting I'll get rid of the rest of them gremlins.
Actual specs (will insert image later3)
The questions to you Gentleman (and) Ladies:
1- Do I have to (must) root the device, so that GooglePalyStore would work? as currently, it is installed, but majority of apps are kicking some or the the sort of errors(unsupported etc), and actual GoogleStore app- "works" via Browser...
2- If yes, how do I (step by step) root it in order to have better control? (what applications( with links please) I should install for such Odyssey and what order etc please!?
3- If rooting, is it possible to Get IE 4.4.0 ROM to install?(instead of 4.1.1)- what will happen to the features of IE analogTV receiver hardware management?
4- Would it matter at all, if device is not rooted, but intended to be installed iGo Primo is packaged somehow with GooglePlay app?- will it work? or will that "modified" app work with rooted device all together? (I already learned, that IE Traffic recorder apps are only available on Google)- meaning not available for me for now...
Very many thanks for the answers and ideas in advance!
Am I wrong in believing, that particular tablet is really just a different badge wearing JXD P1000 MTK8377 tablet?
Hardware specs seem to match, as well as appearance/hardware configuration seems ever so similar, is it that daft of an idea to consider rooting and replacing ROM with one, made for JDX device?
