Walmart selling Sensation S-ON - HTC Sensation

People have bought the Sensation for $600 retail from Walmart. It's being disussed here. I just wanted to give a heads up it has S-ON in case this helps anyone.

I assume that means the bootloader is locked? How do you determine S-ON?

Yeah I wasn't posting it as shocking info. But we were all hoping so much the first batch MIGHT be some type of S-OFF. Oh well. Sense 3.0 will be fun for a while.

Reboot the phone while holding the volume down button. You should see a white screen. At the first line you can read either "SHIP S-ON" or "SHIP S-OFF". If it is S-ON, it is locked. You can then exit this menu by removing the battery.

Thanks. I meant to reply to him and forgot.
If the top line had read S-OFF my bank account would be $600 lighter right now. I'll just wait to get a most likely locked one from T-Mobile.

Can you confirm the actual retail price at walmart? t-mobile has said the Sensation will be 549.99.

If you go to the link I provided you will see people confirmed their stores said $599 as did mine for retail. I forgot to ask about contract but others are saying they got theirs for $148.88 plus tax for a two year.

Does anyone really care about carrier lock these days? Every carrier has a version of these models rebranded with a new name for their own networks these days. These phones arent really worth using on unsupported networks running in 2G EDGE mode at best. If you want the sensation but you are an ATT customer than you buy an Inspire. If you're a verizon customer then you buy a Thunderbolt. Unlocking was only useful years ago when certain carriers were the only one's to get certain types of phones, and really only brought into the mainstream when the iPhone was released.

We're not talking about SIM/carrier lock...we're talking about S-ON or S-OFF...so we can flash our devices with a custom ROM, like CyanogenMod.
Anyway, the Inspire is not similar to the Sensation at all, except it's HTC and has a 4.3 inch screen. The HTC Desire HD is the phone you're thinking of The Desire HD was the original, then came the Inspire, then came the Thunderbolt. Although I guess you could argue that the EVO 3D was first, then the Desire HD, etc etc

i payed 599 but with the 30 day price guarantee you will be fine.. if it is cheaper off contract anyone else in the next 30 days guess who is going back to walmart. receipt in hand

Is it SIM unlocked though if you get it off contract?

No, but you can get an unlock code from TMo if you're a long-time customer. Or you can get the Vodaphone version which is sim-unlocked

I printed off a TMo-News article where T-Mobile announced it would be 549.99 off contract, and Wal-Mart matched it.

HTC Raphael Poll: HTC/Offline vs Carrier/Contract

Just a quick poll to see if you will be buying HTC branded devices offline or getting them from your carriers.
HTC device every time
Yeah same for me. The HTC TyTN II was the first device I'd bought offline and frankly...I don't think there's any going back!
It is however more expensive. But then when my upgrade is due, I will just get an upgrade or take money off my bill. If I get a device I will flog it on ebay! Evens out really, plus the HTC styling is always nicer (physically I mean but the same applies to the ROMs).
Raphael won't be available in the US for a looong time (I'm GSM of course) so I have to try to work that AT&T ROM onto a European version before then.
I'll also go for a Touch Pro without contract - I'll buy it most likely from Amazon for 650,-Euro.
(..it's not like we have a choice here in Bulgaria, phones don't get any carriers' subsidies but..) Definitelly w/o contract.

I did say AT&T ROM... Now why would AT&T come out with a ROM that won't work on their own network?

So you are saying that if i get the euro version-- and flash it with att rom. I will be able to get American 1900 3g? Yea it thought that it was a hardware issue. I feel like i should know this.
It all depends on how generous Tmobileuk are with their upgrade offers. In May 2007, a few months after it came out, I got the Compact 3 free on an 18 months Flext25 contract at £18.50 a month. So it cost me £333 including all my calls (I never go over my limit)
I'm hoping/expecting them to come up with the goods again in October when I'm due my next upgrade. But if they don't I will look around for the cheapest TCO and take the plunge for that one.
Having said that, if they muck about with it too much, removing 3G/wifi, a whacky case redesign etc then I will probably jump ship anyway
Where's the option for BOTH?
I'll get an HTC one and then a T-Mobile upgrade one to sell.

lol, my bad. I should have had a "Both" option, I'll likely be doing the same myself!!
My contracts are up on 2 phones for ATT: just biding my time until the Tpro is available. Then I'll probably try the Omnia for a while to see if I can deal with no keyboard (coming from the 8525, tilt, and 8125, I don't believe so.), then probably end up with the Tpro. But then my daughter, who's using my Tilt will want a Tpro, I'm thinking. But the best part of it is, I've got another contract up in 12/25/ 08! I sure hope I won't disappointed.
I just wish the x1 would be around for ATT!

So release date between 8th and 12th June + wait for root period

I just got the G2x, I will get the Sensation too and then decide which one I like better. Not too concerned with the bootloader as I'm sure someone will crack it eventually.
Cool. Does the G2x have an encrypted bootloader? Or is it already cracked?

HTC rep here,
I can confirm that the subsidized price will indeed be $199.99 on a 2-year contract.
I know most markets are different but here in DFW we are having our HTC Sensation launch party on June 6th and will be available in stores on the 8th.

I love the Sensation and I am willing to give up my brand new arc for it but ONLY if its rootable
so once the sensation is out, can we expect the price of the incredible S to drop? because it doesnt make sense to me that the incredible S price is over $500 non subsidized and the sensation is going to cost even less? i find it odd...

Leaving for work in about 30 minutes. Today is our quarterly meeting/HTC Sensation training. I will have this confirmed and answered and possibly with some photos by the end of the day.
If you have any questions about the device just reply quote em' here and I'll be checking throughout the day and get as many of them answered from the engineers.
Side notes: The prototype that we played with the other day had 5 different little holes scattered throughout the back (I'll try to get a detailed pic of it today). Apparently, they're mic/antenna's. Once the case is off you can see the antenna lining around the back where the holes were placed... very interesting design. The engineer did say the final version might not have them though, as they did look really... strange. Also if you place the phone face down, the screen does not touch the surface.
I'm liking the insider information here. This is much better than videos on YouTube going over the same features.
I just got a G2x and I'm thinking about the sensation, however I'm not inclined to go HTC if they're going to start locking things down. Cyanogen is pro-G2x at the moment and noted on twitter (I think) that they're not going to support the sensation if its locked down.
I am basing my next purchase solely on the support of cyanogen and a few others may be doing the same. It would be nice to know whether the bootloader would be locked or not as well as current battery life stats - real ones.

@DeezeNotes,Cyanogen doesn't like Sense UI period,. But others members of Teamdouch will pick up this phone Sensation will have CM7 I garranteed it
HTC Sensation does NOT have encryption on their bootloader.
HTC Sensation will have sign bootloader basic security not as tight as Moto.

"Off contract" means that you're not required to extend or renew your contract to get a subsidized phone price.
Generally speaking, you _should_ be able to walk into any wireless carrier store and purchase any phone at full price without signing a contract or even activating a line. With most Verizon and Sprint phones, this is a moot point due to CDMA.
I purchased a G2x last Wednesday from the T-Mo store. I've got an Even More Plus plan, so I had the option of either getting the phone through an EIP, pay-per-month or full-price. Because they discounted the phone, EIP wasn't available, so I dropped my card and went on my way.
Only to return it last night.
You should be able to go into the T-Mobile store and simply tell them that you'd like to purchase the phone, for full price, and if they resist, find another store. It should be easy to give the excuse of traveling overseas and/or giving it as a gift and activating it later.

Thanks for the quick reply, I'll probably go with the gsmnation one since i'm pretty short on money.
Couldn't quote because i'm a new member :S
Some people in Canada had luck going into "The Source" and buying the phone without a contract, or any activation and walking out.
$621.44 is what I paid but I got screwed over and had to pay for a 30 day plan. So I chose some voice only crap for 30 bucks.
Oh, but the Bell version is not yet unlockable, however, various sources say it will be released next week.

[Q] Importing from Canada

Hello,
I resided in Colorado here in the states. I want to obtain a Sensation 4G from Canada (Bell or Virgin Mobile) but despite hours of trying to figure this out I simply can not figure out how to import one. Bell and VM will not ship to the US and they also want a person to sign up for a 30 day term even buying a unlocked full price phone. On top of this I can not seem to find an resellers who will ship one of these to me here in the US.
To clarify I am on AT&T and as such need one of these phones as T-Mobile's model will not work for 4G
Any advice on this would be great, Thank you.
id hate to say it, but youre SOL for the time being...bell HATES their hardware going anywhere but bell, and as for virgin, theyre a little more leinent, but wont ship out of canada...your best bet is to try to strike an arrangement/deal with a canadian XDA member to buy and ship one to you...
the other downside is that the canadian S4G isnt carrier unlocked yet
Thank you very much for the information, this is exactly what I feared. I think I might need to just put my money in my sock drawer for now and wait at atleast for them to start unlocking the phones before going through the hassle of contacting a friend in Canada to have them ship me a phone.
Thanks again.
I bought a Bell Sensation 4G from Wireless Wave for the full price ($549 CAD). There were no hassles, contracts, etc.
The only downside at the moment is there are no unlock codes available for Bell Sensation IMEIs; supposedly, this should become available this week.
There are several online shops that will ship to you, I have one myself. Just waiting for the unlock codes

As long as they have a net gain from purchase price/rebate/sale price,I suppose it's a worthwhile endeavor.........

T-Mobile is basically giving these things away. If they used the trade in thing, it makes the phone either free or less than $200. They probably have another phone they are using and don't plan on leaving T-Mobile, so they just got one and are selling it. T-Mobile, effectively, puts you in a contract doing this. They take the price of the phone and give you bill credits for the whole term of the EIP. If you terminate service, you owe the phone. Combine that with the free line promotion they had a few days prior, I am guessing this is what is happening. The contract does not say anything about using the phone. As long as they keep their bill current and keep their service, it will be able to be used (I think...). I would be careful buying one of these V20s in case you are not allowed to use the phone on a line that isn't associated with the account, but that is me being a worry wort.

Swappa won't let you sell a phone that still has anything owed on it. They check the IMEI.
I assume the bill credits wouldn't affect this as long as the phone is free and clear.

Full disclosure is a given when selling on Swappa, anything less would be fraudulent,if not to the letter of the rules,it certainly would be in spirit/practice.

Yeah ur right. Lol I wast trying to buy a v10 and g5 earlier this year and ran into this situation. Very difficult to deal with. Most sellers selling them do t really understand them selves and they blame T-Mobile. It probly is T-Mobile fault since it's branded T-Mobile. Just want everyone to be aware they can't be unlocked, even a third party unlock service can't. Having it on ur account for 40 days doesnt matter either. It's a crappy situation lol

FWIW,here's Swappa's policy on clean ESN's:
https://swappa.com/faq/sell/share_esn_numbers
Bulletproof,no,but,it sounds as if they're doing their due dilligence w/researching the ESN/IMEI,perhaps w/more tools than the general public is armed with.
Some sharp individuals here on XDA/Swappa running the show,I'm guessing/hoping they have this scenario covered, enough to ensure the buyers are protected in a worse-case scenario.
A little bit off topic, can you get square trade insurance for phones purchased at swappa?
