So uhh, i dont know if anyone has seen this.. but here you go
http://androidcommunity.com/galaxy-s-android-2-3-gingerbread-update-imminent-20110225/
It looks like a legit release for 2.3 for Galaxy S. If thats the case, how hard would it be to port it from that to the captivate?
and a march release
Oh and btw... dont flame me if its wrong or anything.. im just a guy posting something he found... which may help out the community -.-

I think this has been posted a couple of times (can't remember, but I know I've seen it around the web a couple of times). Either way, right now it's a "friend of a friend said this" type thing. Until there is some proof myself and many others will remain skeptical.
Another issue is that the Galaxy S phones are much more popular in other parts of the world. With Samsung trying to charge all the carriers upgrade fees like they did with 2.2, causing a lot of the delays, the carriers may not be interested in upgrading the phone to 2.3 even if Samsung has it ready. Especially since we're going to see the SGS 2 and multiple other newer and better phones out by then. The Captivate and other SGS phones will be low end phones by then, and the carriers probably won't want to pay Samsung for updates to an old phone.
oh man! so theres the possibility of never seeing a legit 2.3? :S i guess il have to live with CM7.
ANY custom rom will be better than the rom its based off of.
WHO CAN?
XDA CAN!!

Was it? I hadn't heard that, but I didn't pay that much attention to the AT&T release of 2.2 since I've been running 2.2 for months.
Either way, even if it doesn't come to a money issue, it's still going to come down to the same issue. The SGS 2 will have replaced the SGS by the time Samsung would have Gingerbread ready, and I wouldn't doubt at all if this phone never saw another update. It was hard enough to get 2.2 out of Samsung when this phone was their flagship, let along getting them to push one more update when it's replacement is already ready.
Edit: Just read an article about that, you're right. I hadn't seen Samsung's reply to that rumor. I guess that just makes Samsung lazy and not lazy and greedy, haha.

It was debunked by Samsung denying it, which means it wasnt really debunked.
I wouldn't expect them to be public about such things....you can have a "price to prioritize" or something which is essentially the same thing but allows you to say you aren't charging for the upgrade.
I'm not saying I know what's going on, I'm just saying I don't trust Samsung at their word.

Why do you assume it was samsung that held back the update? It was more than likely ATT, being that other providers had already released the update.

Pretty sure there would be some sort of outcry from carriers if Samsung was lying. There would probably be more legal ramifications if Samsung lied about not charging for updates rather than some bad publicity about charging for the updates.

Samsung did its part in holding up the update by not wanting to pay the fee the service providers were charging. Same goes with all carriers that were way behind on the 2.2 update.
I'll be skipping it. I had problems with the 2.2 update and just flashed my first ROM. So much faster and the battery lasts a ton longer

You're stating the obvious. Why would anyone modify a ROM to make to inferior to the original? It would be nice if there were an original 2.3 to base something on.

No what he is doing is his usual routine of taking a dump on any post where someone mentions being interested in Samsung firmware releases, because he thinks what is already out via third-parties is all anyone with a brain should want. And yet the AT&T Froyo release resulted in, in my opinion, the best ROM yet from DesignGears.

you obviously haven't tried any 2.2.1 i9000 roms then... Because they blow the doors off any official froyo rom from samsuck. I tried cog 4 and torch and it lagged beyond belief, no offense to dg, but its samsucks fault.

I was running the official Rogers 2.2. and it was better than the official 2.1 that I played around with for a few days first to compare. However, putting Firefly 2.3 (and Andromeda 1.2 before that) I can certainly confirm that the custom rom route is definitely the way to go. MUCH faster (lagfix probably has huge impact on this) far more functional (rooted) better battery consumption (custom kernels) and IMO far better support. I can tell you I fully expect that XDA and the like would provide far superior peer based support than you'd get from your provider. Of course chances are if you weren't putting custom stuff on your phone you'd be far less likely to need it, but the collective knowledge here for general support of devices is far more impressive than some tech support drone that you'd speak to if you called in to you provider.

Let's be honest, this phone could have come with 2.2 on it already when it shipped. Samsung took quite a while to get 2.2 ready even for the I9000s. There are always going to be carriers delays after it's ready, but Samsung took their time as well.

Froyo was announced less than 2 months before this phone shipped. The source wasn't available until less than a month before. I see no problem with shipping with 2.1 under these circumstances.

I've used 2.2.1 ROMs and they are great. If I recall Serendipity is one and it was my favorite prior to Andromeda (which is 2.2 i9010 based and very fast). Cog 4.1 is the first of DGs ROM I've used for more than a day in months; I haven't been a huge fan. As soon as i9000 kernels became mostly trouble free I moved on. I'm not saying the others were bad and I'm not saying 4.1 is better than brand x, I just like it better than previous DG ROMs I tried.
As for your lag problems with Cog 4.1, I don't doubt you, I just don't have it, but I'm using the Paragon kernel which may account for our different experiences.
Does anyone know if cyanogen will ever come to the charge? I've seen rumors and and some threads but nothing concrete

Since nobody wants to give you a straight up response, having been using a Fascinate from the beginning, based on that cycle, it is probably a year out if I had to guess. That's if people are actively working on it I suppose. We just now got it working well on the Fascinate...look at the Fascinate launch date, make a few assumptions, and do the math. Unless something huge happens I would expect it to be a long time, if ever. The one saving grace for this phone is probably its similarities to many other phones like the GalaxyS line and NexusS. Nobody knows when.
Likes the poster above me said, there's no definitive information. I'd say that's the worst thing about the Charge. Not the low RAM or the lack of official GB it's just not a huge scene. Look @ the Galaxy S2, not even released in the U.S. and it's already got Cyanogen. Kind of sad to see such a beautiful phone not getting the attention it deserves.
I'm not expecting much in the way of Charge development. I kind of knew when i got it as a replacement for the fascinate that it was a holdover till March (my 20 month upgrade eligibility). At least i got a better camera, front camera and LTE for real nice chatting video.

Galaxy S2 got Cyanogen first because Samsung sent a phone to one of the devs a few months back.
I love my Charge! Came from the Fascinate and had plenty of time to try out CM7. The GPS on the charge is lightning fast right out of the box, touchwiz camera and video player are by far the best available. CM7 definitely offers more control, but the TW camera alone is enough to make me stay.

While true, that should make everyone feel even worse about the dev scene for our phone (that the manufacturer cares enough to get dev for one of their phones but not the one we have).
That said, I've never had a phone with CM. I'm completely happy with the stuff put out by Danalo, Nitro, and I'm sure I'll like kejar's stuff whenever I try it out.

I can tell you when CM7 for the Fascinate got stable and MMS finally got fixed, o tried it out, and compared to all the other Touchwiz based roms, its ridiculously fast. The BML/MTD implementation is above and beyond any TW deodexed, debloated, voodoo ext4 type of rom. That's not to discredit those roms, but a stable CM build with a good kernel literally turned my Fascinate into a whole new device more than a year into its life.
So its going to be released pretty soon.. what are the odds of the Captivate getting some love?
http://techcrunch.com/2011/10/19/in...axy-nexus-and-ice-cream-sandwich-android-4-0/
Unfortunately, I'm going to have to go with 'Nil.'
The chances are non existent. It just makes business sense for for these updates to take forever. I do understand there are some hardware issues with the updates but in the end the average consumer is going to purchase a new phone or use their upgrade in order to get the latest os. If they keep updating old phones to the newest stuff people would hold onto their phone longer. I mean, ths is the first phone ive ever owned that I could flash custom roms onto. Before this I was locked into the operating system and whatever user interface was on the phone when I purchased it. If I hadnt found this forum or custom roms I would be frustrated by the lack of gingerbread and probably would have used my upgrade by now.
No hope. Most of the features aside from the UI wont work anyways due to not having the hardware (NFC) or lack of CPU and RAM (Camera features).
Just get a nice theme
they have it up and running on fascinates, as of 5AM this morning
We didnt even get official GB and we want ICS.....lol so greedy we people are...
Hell yeah Well rogers got the official gb , but att, com'on, forget about it.
First, do a little more searching. There is alreadya thread open for this topic.
That said, we will never see an official update. Our only hope of seeing it is from a port, courtesy of a device that does get it, or wait on CyagenMod to start on CM9.
Be patient. It'll be ported eventually.
I find it amazing that somone already has it somewhat running on their fascinate. I guess all the great Cappy dev's have jumped ship
Well, i'd be surprised to see ICS for our captivate. Even if cyanogen mod is getting ICS, i probably won't jump because of the superior call quality and slightly (if not better) battery life on captivate ROMs.
I thought there was some sort of court ruling forcing google to push the same version of android to all phones that were capable. I could be talking out of my ass though.

Nope, not even in the ballpark. Google has no legal obligation to any phone. What you are thinking of is how Google made the main phone produces agree to try harder to keep the phones up to date (up to one and a half years past release aka 18months). But that did not extend to the carriers...
Else they have to stop using the "Android" name and Google's apps

lol... is this a troll or what? We have Froyo = v2.2. We would all love v2.3, v4.0, or v4.1 (jellybean). All of those are POSSIBLE, but no coders have done it. I think it is damn-near-impossible unless we get some Samsung source-code (which I thought I read was released a while back, but either I was mistaken or just nobody has stepped up to the plate yet).

Sduvick and windxixi got pretty far into the porting process.
The problem is that while Samsung did indeed release source code to the linux kernel and select other bits, their source drop was a mess. There are a huge number of differences between the SK4G source and stock Froyo kernel source.
Someone who was very familiar with the changes between Froyo and Gingerbread could probably move the process further along. But no one with that knowledge has taken interest in the SK4G, and as time passes any such knowledge wil fade.
It's a shame. I have the money to buy any phone I want, and that is the SK4G. To me, it's ergonomics (keyboard-design / 4-main-hard-buttons) have not been topped by any phone on any carrier at any price.
If I had the time to learn just how to do all the stuff required, I'd gladly spend the time porting JB to the Sidekick.
I was of the impression that not all the driver source had been released
Code wise the device is a trainwreck hahaha
Also, it's not like sduvick, windxixi, or Samsung spent any time commenting their code. There's no documentation to speak of. It's a cluster*@#&*.

What a shame. This is a pretty kick ass phone. Thanks for clearing that up for me. And yes, I understand you're making fun of me for asking. But thanks all the same.:crying:
Misleading title :/
Ok, so i know I've been away for A LONG time now, but, bear with me. Instead of put a bounty like most sections do to get 2.3, 4.0 and possibly jellybean, how about we just chip in a SK4G. I know that might be a big give away, but the main reason i didn't think developers where interested in this phone is because,
1) It kinda had barely any advertising, and when it did it was fairly short.
2) It's a budget phone for people that want a smart phone, like me and many others now a days.
3) During the time this came out their where many other big phone being released like the Galaxy S2.
So why don't we try to scout out a developer that can help us with this by offering a SK4G for them to work on, maybe even get this portal worthy as bounty.

I agree, i kinda gave up hope on anything past GB on this phone. But to be honest, i can see this phone coming back next year because of how popular it was when it did hit the market for the first few months. If they do make a another android sidekick i will be willing to buy it just to see if they worked out the kinks and not make another Frankenstein of a phone. Q3 of phones is basically passed, Q4 nothing major is really coming out besides the rumored Note 2. Other than that right now its Galaxy S3 and One X, which in my eyes the One X might have the S3 beat if we can get the source code for the One X. But other than that, i dont have high expectations for Q4.
I don't see how this phone doesn't have at least gingerbread. I have an HTC hero, and I have been looking at the specs side by side. I have to say it looks, to me at least, that the Sidekick is more capable of running these roms. I have already run ICS on the hero, and it runs nicely. The only reason i can see for not porting these newer roms to the sidekick is simply a lack of users and developers. I think there is less user base for the sidekick than the HTC hero, not to mention the previous incarnations of the sidekick were plagued by issues.
But to close out, I honestly think the sidekick is more than capable of running GB, ICS, and maybe even Jellybean.

Lmao, boo sack. Funniest asian guy ever. But, I digress. Yeah, it's because the source was a mess. The people who happened to be interested in the phone aren't mature mostly. Most of the userbase of the Sidekick 4G are teenagers/kids. (It's always how it's been since it was released, it was nothing but a fad.) Most teens tend to not know how to program at an early age, (though there are some who can). Personally, my Galaxy S II has Jelly Bean 4.1.1 and has been receiving upgrades since Gingerbread 2.3.6, including 4.0.1, 4.0.3, and as of today, 4.0.4. The reason this is the case is because this phone is generally bought more in stores. Companies are willing to spend more time and money if they are in-turn making money on a phone. (Correct me if I'm wrong.)

It's the same story on the SGH-T959V side (Galaxy S 4G). The two phones seem to be marketed at parents with teenagers.
Our forums get flooded with demanding unknowledgeable (and they don't seek knowledge either) teenagers, and we have very few device developers.
Galaxy S 4G was lucky to get Gingerbread. Sadly, I was hoping SK4G would also at least get gingerbread, but it got stuck on froyo.
There is a glimmer of hope. If you search some of code in the Galaxy S 4G's source drop, you find mentions of sidekick in there.
Search this file for SIDEKICK. The difference between the Galaxy S 4G and Captivate Gingerbread source drop are very little (although they are very different devices and take very different paths in the code).
So the sk4g is still an aries device and imho, can at least get a gingerbread port.
Galaxy S 4G has been ported to CM9, AOKP, SlimICS, Gummy (when it existed, not so much now), and a few other GB and ICS based "from source" roms. So GB and ICS should still be possible on SK4G. And I know we plan on porting JB after we finalize the sgs4g to aries kernel port, and since SK4G and SGS4G hardware is similiar (plus or minus a few components) SK4G should be able to run JB.
It will all just take a little time.

He has some interesting ways of getting things to work.
There is more then one way to skin a cat.
Ahh, and yes.. 4.0.4 would be delicious on the sidekick 4G, is it possible? I or is the hardware difficult to deal with? I'm thinking of learning how 2 become a dev myself

Im never buying another product with the name sidekick in it, it just gets abandoned. Like a prom dress, wear in once then lose it.

Hahaha, this happened to more then just this phone. The only reason the galaxy s 4g has anything is because me and a few other people stuck it out.
There are other phones that never got anything and were more then capable of running everything up to jellybean.
The funny thing is, I hear a lot of users get all butt-hurty because their phone doesn't have the latest greatest rom. I say: too bad.
This is xda-developers.com, not xda-pimp-my-phone.com. The developers choose which phone they want to dev on, and go for it. Sometimes they are good and sometimes they suck. If a phone doesn't have too many developers, it's kind of a sign.
It sounds like there are a few devs around here that still want to make things happen.
So I wouldn't write off the sk4g quite yet. But also, don't expect things to happen right away.
Patience.

Im not the type to whine when i dont have jellybean on my sk, however i do get upset this phone still has alot of problem even after running half assed roms on my phone. No real dev here yet, most likely never will be one.

There was. They got chased off by the ungreatfuls.
sduvick, ayoteddy for example were two of the best devs for this phone. And if it weren't for them, we'd still probably running stock-ass-retarded phones.

Aggreed 100% I've been here since pretty much the release of the sk4g and the original dev teams were on the ball but had very little to work with I bet you sduvick and ay0teddy got some patchwork gb to work or at least cm6 or cm7 running on the sk4g but kept it to themselves. I've watched this forum go downhill till the official discontinuation of the phone and I'm pretty sure if I managed to get gb or ics running on my sk4g is keep it to myself with all the kanging and immaturity on here. But that's just opinion. I personally don't think the sk4g could handle ics only due to the lack of ram. The hummingbird 1Ghz processor could handle it but lack of ram would make it unbearable especially for a stock OTA.

Nah, sgs4g has the same specs, and can handle ics just fine.

As a matter of fact, our phone can handle Jelly Bean.
I think I should just get it over with, I'm gonna buy the Samsung galaxy s 3, forget physical keyboards exist, and throw this phone into a bucket of fresh cement.

Well, if you do, don't loose your sk4g. I'm waiting for TheLastSidekick to mail his phone, then it's on like donkey kong.
