So, I wouldn't have the first clue on how to get jelly bean on a sidekick. But I hear its a pretty versatile OS. I was wondering if any of you coders thought it would be possible to do?

We don't even have GINGERBREAD! This phone will never run Jellybean.
lol... is this a troll or what? We have Froyo = v2.2. We would all love v2.3, v4.0, or v4.1 (jellybean). All of those are POSSIBLE, but no coders have done it. I think it is damn-near-impossible unless we get some Samsung source-code (which I thought I read was released a while back, but either I was mistaken or just nobody has stepped up to the plate yet).

Sduvick and windxixi got pretty far into the porting process.
The problem is that while Samsung did indeed release source code to the linux kernel and select other bits, their source drop was a mess. There are a huge number of differences between the SK4G source and stock Froyo kernel source.
Someone who was very familiar with the changes between Froyo and Gingerbread could probably move the process further along. But no one with that knowledge has taken interest in the SK4G, and as time passes any such knowledge wil fade.
It's a shame. I have the money to buy any phone I want, and that is the SK4G. To me, it's ergonomics (keyboard-design / 4-main-hard-buttons) have not been topped by any phone on any carrier at any price.
If I had the time to learn just how to do all the stuff required, I'd gladly spend the time porting JB to the Sidekick.
I was of the impression that not all the driver source had been released
Code wise the device is a trainwreck hahaha
Also, it's not like sduvick, windxixi, or Samsung spent any time commenting their code. There's no documentation to speak of. It's a cluster*@#&*.

What a shame. This is a pretty kick ass phone. Thanks for clearing that up for me. And yes, I understand you're making fun of me for asking. But thanks all the same.:crying:
Misleading title :/
Ok, so i know I've been away for A LONG time now, but, bear with me. Instead of put a bounty like most sections do to get 2.3, 4.0 and possibly jellybean, how about we just chip in a SK4G. I know that might be a big give away, but the main reason i didn't think developers where interested in this phone is because,
1) It kinda had barely any advertising, and when it did it was fairly short.
2) It's a budget phone for people that want a smart phone, like me and many others now a days.
3) During the time this came out their where many other big phone being released like the Galaxy S2.
So why don't we try to scout out a developer that can help us with this by offering a SK4G for them to work on, maybe even get this portal worthy as bounty.
I thought with working less hours at my new job, I would have time to help with this, but that just gave the wife more time to give me more work..lol. It just seems like the people who are willing don't have the time and the people that have the time aren't willing.

And then there's the other type of folks who start. Then the the kangers, trolls, and idiots who spook the devs and they quit. I've gotten over the idea of gb, ics, or jb on this device... fk it, I have better ish to do.
Although I am down to throw a couple bucks towards a dev phone for sure.

This is my second favorite phone behind the G1 I dropped 15 feet to it's doom. I even thought I would have time to try to build from scratch with my new job, but my wife is keeping me busy and I just don't have time. This is the second time I've been on here in 3 months..the other time was this afternoon..lol. I'm actually due an upgrade and am waiting to see what is coming out this fall.

I agree, i kinda gave up hope on anything past GB on this phone. But to be honest, i can see this phone coming back next year because of how popular it was when it did hit the market for the first few months. If they do make a another android sidekick i will be willing to buy it just to see if they worked out the kinks and not make another Frankenstein of a phone. Also i will be willing to throw in some money, and if i have to i can look into providing a Sidekick 4g.

Q3 of phones is basically passed, Q4 nothing major is really coming out besides the rumored Note 2. Other than that right now its Galaxy S3 and One X, which in my eyes the One X might have the S3 beat if we can get the source code for the One X. But other than that, i dont have high expectations for Q4.
I don't see how this phone doesn't have at least gingerbread. I have an HTC hero, and I have been looking at the specs side by side. I have to say it looks, to me at least, that the Sidekick is more capable of running these roms. I have already run ICS on the hero, and it runs nicely. The only reason i can see for not porting these newer roms to the sidekick is simply a lack of users and developers. I think there is less user base for the sidekick than the HTC hero, not to mention the previous incarnations of the sidekick were plagued by issues.
But to close out, I honestly think the sidekick is more than capable of running GB, ICS, and maybe even Jellybean.

I actually sold my mytouch 3g slide to get this phone . Like this phone is a big upgrade from it, but Dev wise, not even close. 3g slide has gb , ics and jb . And the specs on that phone are not up there. Kinda makes me want my slide back XP , but hey, I did it for the a/v out , 267 ppi lcd, hummingbird gpu and 1 ghz processor XP

So its going to be released pretty soon.. what are the odds of the Captivate getting some love?
http://techcrunch.com/2011/10/19/in...axy-nexus-and-ice-cream-sandwich-android-4-0/
Unfortunately, I'm going to have to go with 'Nil.'
The chances are non existent. It just makes business sense for for these updates to take forever. I do understand there are some hardware issues with the updates but in the end the average consumer is going to purchase a new phone or use their upgrade in order to get the latest os. If they keep updating old phones to the newest stuff people would hold onto their phone longer. I mean, ths is the first phone ive ever owned that I could flash custom roms onto. Before this I was locked into the operating system and whatever user interface was on the phone when I purchased it. If I hadnt found this forum or custom roms I would be frustrated by the lack of gingerbread and probably would have used my upgrade by now.
No hope. Most of the features aside from the UI wont work anyways due to not having the hardware (NFC) or lack of CPU and RAM (Camera features).
Just get a nice theme
they have it up and running on fascinates, as of 5AM this morning
We didnt even get official GB and we want ICS.....lol so greedy we people are...
Hell yeah Well rogers got the official gb , but att, com'on, forget about it.
First, do a little more searching. There is alreadya thread open for this topic.
That said, we will never see an official update. Our only hope of seeing it is from a port, courtesy of a device that does get it, or wait on CyagenMod to start on CM9.
Be patient. It'll be ported eventually.
I find it amazing that somone already has it somewhat running on their fascinate. I guess all the great Cappy dev's have jumped ship
Well, i'd be surprised to see ICS for our captivate. Even if cyanogen mod is getting ICS, i probably won't jump because of the superior call quality and slightly (if not better) battery life on captivate ROMs.
I thought there was some sort of court ruling forcing google to push the same version of android to all phones that were capable. I could be talking out of my ass though.

Um I did? - and even the XDA board didn't give me the topic yet so meh.
And someone has this starting to run on the Fascinate?? The Captivate is THE phone that seems to get the most love besides the Vibrant for this range of devices.
And I don't care how we get it... as long as someone is able to wedge it into the phone.
You know, it's open source.
Any of you asking for it can take a crack at it
I am seriously inexperienced, but this might be a good start to a programming career..

Nope, not even in the ballpark. Google has no legal obligation to any phone. What you are thinking of is how Google made the main phone produces agree to try harder to keep the phones up to date (up to one and a half years past release aka 18months). But that did not extend to the carriers...
Else they have to stop using the "Android" name and Google's apps

If you actually go poke around the Fascinate forum there's one guy who claims he has it running but hasn't offered any sort of proof. I think he's just looking for attention, but I'd be happy to be proven wrong.

If he does have it running, it's the SDK release and it will be slow as molasses.
I hate to say it but through the past year I've seen this thread explode then burn fizzle and slowly die.
There hasn't been any "new" development for this phone since mid year and it doesn't look like we will ever get gingerbread or any real interest in this phone from any hardcore developers. T-Mobile failed in ressurecting the sidekick imho it started off good but it quickly became a novelty and they just brushed it under the carpet. Even going so far as to not do exchanges on devices with known problems.
I love the sidekick line for the design of the phone and the full keyboard and basic reliability of the design. For those who don't know the company who designed and built the original sidekick phones "Sharp" came out with a new phone on at&t that looks similar to the older sidekick designs. Its also touch screen and has android. I havnt really looked at the specs on it tho. Just know it exists.
For now ill use this phone till it falls apart only because I can't afford a new one and T-Mobile has me by the balls on contract :-/ untill there's some kind of breakthrough with this phone I think I'm done posting on here till I get my next android device.
Id like to thank those who deserve it for helping me and the community

The sidekick was my first android phone an I am sad that more devs haven't seen this phone as the new G1 but at the same time i'm happy with the devs we have that are trying to learn new things an make better roms for our phones. I myself am also on contract with tmobile so it will be a while before i can upgrade my sidekick for another phone (maybe a galaxy note even if it means no 3g or 4g) Currently for stability i've been using a spare xperia x10 mini pro (loaded with miniCMpro an phone cost me $125 after shipping) an its a breath of fresh air not having the phone reboot at random or fcing in the background without showing whats going wrong though i do miss having least 2g speeds (running on edge on this phone) but I do hope one day the devs we have or a new one finds a way to bring our phone from being a unloved child to being a phone to be desired
hey
yea i got rid of my sidekick 4g i have a galaxy s device now and im loveing it the way i did was called tmobile and demanded that i speak to the loyalty department and demanded a new phone because of the issues or i was leaving and they basically gave me a 600 dollar phone for 99.99 dollars 50 rebate and theirs a lot of dev going on for this phone that i got now you can take the warranty route and exchange your device three times than get another device free its called warranty exchange and since its a 4g phone you have the option of getting another 4g phone but they choose it for u its overnight shipping so you basically HAVE to have insurrance in order for it to be 5 bucks with each exchange or otherwise you pay 20 bucks for each exchange without insurrance if it all works out go to gazelle.com and sell your sidekick they gave me 80 for it
Bye. Can't say I care.

Hey, at least he/she thanked the devs... it might have taken a page and a half to get there, with a review of opinions everyone has already said and/or read.
I must admit though, I do feel that the earth stopped rotating for a moment upon this announcement. hehehe
i kid-i kid
While development and upgrades to Gingerbread may be non-existant (for now), the users on this community have brought out the best in my phone. I had the same outlook as you did soon after buying this phone and seeing that there wasn't a) A gingerbread update already available (seeing as how the phone was released in March and I got mine last month), and b) It didn't look like Gingerbread or ICS weren't going to be available anytime in the near future. Even with Fryo this phone still has a lot to offer. Revolution's ICS Domination ROM gave my phone new life and a new modem brought my down/up speeds up exponentialy.
I have hope that eventually we will see a Gingerbread update (or even ICS) since this phones specs aren't too differnt from that of the Nexus S. But if not, I'm still glad I chose to get a Sidekick one last time.
I'm giving up too we just gotta wait the devs got our bacl!

Once again I look on xda and find a small amount of dev work being done I'm glad people still are holding on to this device. It makes me happy. I came back after this post for a brief time because of new roms but wound up going back to an older rom after difficulties. I know most of you left here are new to this device but I wanted to let everyone know once again I'm leaving my sk4g. I will be moving to the HTC Amaze 4g forums one of my good friends got a new rezound and let me have her amaze for free ^_^ once I root it I will be switching my daily driver to that. I hope to see this phone someday get the respect it should have from the inital release. Thank you to all devs who prooved that this phone wasn't just a little toy for text addicted teens and actually could have been brought to greatness if it weren't for t-mobile dropping support. Also if we ever get gingerbread, ice cream sandwich or jellybean to run on the sk4g would someone please pm me and let me know I would love to see it ^_^ untill then goodbye all and once again a big thanx to all the devs who keep this section of xda from going into the inactive threads pile with all other discontinued phones ^_^

No problem. I myself have switched DD's, but still support this phone highly. Regardless, I wish you the best of luck. The SGSII is an amazing phone, and I hope the Amaze4G is just as well. If you're finally done with the SK4G, you could look into sending it do bhundven as he is a recognized developer as such I'm sure he can do wonderful things and teach us things we never knew. After he's done creating and testing and he gets his own (soon) he will send it back. Please get in contact with him.
If I at any point decide to leave the SK4G (which isn't in my immediate future but who knows) I will send it to the developer who DOES NOT have one or is not capable of getting one -- to keep.

TLS, that was very nice to ask that! If azcledel feels that he does not want to "give up" his sk4g, but instead loan it to me for 2 weeks, I would be happy to pay shipping to and from me.

I would gladly if you were to pay shipping (I'm a broke ass college student with no job) haha. You ARE a recognized developer. I trust you.
PM me on here if you're up for it. I'm going to be at college nearly all day so I won't be able to even send it at least until tomorrow. (My day off).
I will concider sending it once I get access to a pc to root my amaze but I'm not sure I want to give it up yet the amaze is a dual core running a fresh stock ics 4.0.3 with sense 3.6 it all depends on what I can do to it and how I like it. Woah! Don't sell the Amaze 4G, it's..well...amazing! But yeah, just because it's 4.0.3 doesn't mean anything. You can find stable builds of 4.0.4 and 4.1.1 with Sense UI removed -- (if you want it that way) I got my GS II and like, 3 days later 4.0.4 officially came out with a newer radio too. But yeah, I understand the feeling of not wanting to consider dropping the SK4G in anyway (after all, it was and is my first Android smartphone and the first for which I've maintained a ROM for...) regardless, I'll admit to only buying the phone for 2 reasons...I was a teenager when the Sidekick was BOOMING around middle school and high school, and the price was so damn budget I had to get it.
Well so far I'm digging the amaze still hate not having a 5 row physical keyboard but the dev teams seem pretty informed we have ppl working on porting cyanogen mod 10 and jellybean. Right now I'm running a Rom with 4.0.3 had one running 4.0.4 but had problems sending/RECEIVING mms so I SWITCHED back. Ics is awesome but way different than gingerbread and our Frito that we've been plagued with. Just felt like updating you guys seeing as this is where my whole xda/android experience started. My comment may have been a little harsh and I will delete it. Seriously though, this phone will always be one step behind the rest. It is a great device and it's hardware specs fall in line with those receiving ICS. Samsung just got Ginger out to us and how long has that been out?
I do appreciate all the work the Devs have done and are doing. Without you guys this phone would be completely dead. Currently though it is half dead and time to sell based on Samsung's decision.
I have the feeling this phone will get ICS through other channels, but that remains to be seen, for one, and the lack of support for this device from Samsung is really the point here, for two.
With the Android Update Alliance a clear attempt to simply stay concerns for fragmentation and lacking, irresponsible product support shining so clearly through it's remains, I am very glad to have kept this phone and to have supported developers that are on my team, and not just pretending to be. Sell? NO WAI.
What outcome does that hold? More money to Samsung for the seemingly delicious SGS2? Or better yet, complaining about the unhealthy support at the device deli I am seats at, only to cross the street and put money down to bite on another manufacturer's mis-advertised meal?
No no, my question remains.
Where's the beef? It goes unanswered.
Except here at XDA. Where support means putting my money where my mouth is. Raver, Hawk, and Co. can expect their christmas bonus. The money I won't spend on empty promises can go to those who were promised nothing, promised nothing, and delivered anyways.
May all your device purchases be used, may all your developers get their just rewards, and may all your manufacturers have their feet held close to the fire.
Merry Christmas to XDA, and to all abused consumers on Android who haven't wised up to where your dollars belong, a swift flight.

ooh, that's a cheap move by Sammy. All they care about is cash. They are quite aware that this phone will run ICS almost as well as gs2, not counting the dual core thing. If not that, it will still be as fast if not faster than GB on this. Oh well, at least we will get CM7. I don't know about cm9 because we might have the same kernel source issue. Oh well, maybe ill get the next of the nexuses. Maybe with "jolly rancher" or something similar. Maybe 4.1 or 5.0.
Anyway, those who are average and don't mod their android phones who get the ICS update ota from Samsung won't even notice it is different because touchwiz would kill it anyway.
Edit: nice poem aldreth. You posted before me, so I didn't see it previously.

Did sammy ever even promise us GB? I don't recall one being made, and with ICS on the horizon, our chances were looking less and less likely. The plans for the SGS4G may not have been announced, but there is still a slight chance. i'll get my ICS soon enough, whether it be with this device or another.

Seriously???
May be a stupid question but what would you so need in ICS that GB cannot deliver? You realize that it's not gonna be any faster or better, right? I mean you're running on the same exact hardware and you'll see about the same level of performance out of it no matter which android os you're using.
Sorry, I just don't get this constant need to upgrade thing...
I know I'm upgrading the os when there's
1. a definite improvement in its performance
2. soft that runs on it and doesn't run on the older os
Meanwhile and probably for the next year or so everything will work fine with GB.
Slick ass movie by samsung. Them ****s want us to buy another phone.
@Airfluip1- You said we will at least get CM7, is that for sure? I mean is someone working on it now and is it official or un-official?
I do not see the point of ICS as it is basically only a cosmetic difference than what we are running now. The awesome devs here have already made Roms that outperform ICS on our phones. I would much rather see MIUI but, CM7 will be good too.

I guess what I should have said was how much better could ICS be versus what we have now with the custom Roms? I mean my phone is seriously fast and will run anything I want, so what's the point? What could I do with ICS that I cannot do now?

With a newer kernel, one would only expect bugfixes, performance fixes, and new features (like host usb support, new arm hibernation support, and a ton of others...)
With a newer android, I know there are bugs that I opened with AOSP that are fixed in ICS. So that would be nice to be able to test the resolution of the bugs I opened. Lots of other android specific fixes, performance improvements, and new features.

You obviously don't love android as much as us.
If you don't care about what android, then go buy a used G1 or an iPhone.

ICS is beautiful. Not just the eye-candy but the features are greater. I mean, if we get more Bhundvens, and etc working to make our phone as fast as a galaxy nexus, then if we get ICS, we can make it faster. Like I said though. Android love = loving and cherishing the updates. Every version will be better. But we should make the best of trying to get each version.(That's just me). Also, why MIUI, i love CM7 much better.(personal preference, maybe just what you like, I hate iPhone, just like MIUI, I love AOSP android, CM7)
But I guess we will get CM7 sometime. +1 to Bhundven.

I was basing what I said off of " don't fix something that's not broken ". I just don't see enough improvements ( software-wise ) to make me wanna switch from ( hopefully soon ) CM7 to ICS or even Tehgyb's Rom I am on now to ICS. I love Android and I loved having CM7 on all of my devices, I still have an Optimus V and Incredible S running CM7 and I was really disappointed when I got this phone and there was not a CM7 for it which blew me away as seeing as this is a Galaxy S phone. I'm not saying ICS is not good, I'm just saying that talking and reading about it hasn't done anything to me to make me want to use it. Of course I will try it the first day it is available for this phone and I probaly will say " Damn, this is nice! " but, until I can use it for myself and not just read about it, I'm going to stick with my point.
@Airfluip1, I will never own an iAnything.
bswann, since no one has actually answered your question about what features ICS has that GB does not, you can try reading these articles to get a better idea:
http://www.androidauthority.com/android-2-3-gingerbread-vs-android-4-0-ice-cream-sandwich-37742/
http://www.techradar.com/reviews/pc...android-4-0-ice-cream-sandwich-1043150/review
To the user, it seems like it's mostly UI improvements, making certain tasks easier to perform and monitor. Also, I heard ICS will automatically adjust to whatever screen resolution it runs on, so you won't need a different version to run on a phone vs a tablet (like honeycomb).
It seems the backend has been restructured as well, and while this probably won't be visible to the user, we can only assume that it will make the system run smoother and faster as a whole. I hope so, anyway.
So really, in a nutshell, ICS probably won't give your phone a bunch of features it doesn't have already, but it should make things run smoother, faster, and easier.
I'm not on contract, so I might upgrade IF I feel that ICS offers some things I can't live without, and I will get to test it soon on my HP Touchpad (CM team is working on a port right now). But for now, GB serves me well on my GS4G.
ICS
All i know is that my fast phone was made faster by the dev's here. Most of us appreciate the time spent as I enjoy sampling all the rom's.
If someone can port the ICS to our phone I am sure it will be that much better.
Thanks and Happy Holidays.

Lmao, boo sack. Funniest asian guy ever. But, I digress. Yeah, it's because the source was a mess. The people who happened to be interested in the phone aren't mature mostly. Most of the userbase of the Sidekick 4G are teenagers/kids. (It's always how it's been since it was released, it was nothing but a fad.) Most teens tend to not know how to program at an early age, (though there are some who can). Personally, my Galaxy S II has Jelly Bean 4.1.1 and has been receiving upgrades since Gingerbread 2.3.6, including 4.0.1, 4.0.3, and as of today, 4.0.4. The reason this is the case is because this phone is generally bought more in stores. Companies are willing to spend more time and money if they are in-turn making money on a phone. (Correct me if I'm wrong.)

It's the same story on the SGH-T959V side (Galaxy S 4G). The two phones seem to be marketed at parents with teenagers.
Our forums get flooded with demanding unknowledgeable (and they don't seek knowledge either) teenagers, and we have very few device developers.
Galaxy S 4G was lucky to get Gingerbread. Sadly, I was hoping SK4G would also at least get gingerbread, but it got stuck on froyo.
There is a glimmer of hope. If you search some of code in the Galaxy S 4G's source drop, you find mentions of sidekick in there.
Search this file for SIDEKICK. The difference between the Galaxy S 4G and Captivate Gingerbread source drop are very little (although they are very different devices and take very different paths in the code).
So the sk4g is still an aries device and imho, can at least get a gingerbread port.
Galaxy S 4G has been ported to CM9, AOKP, SlimICS, Gummy (when it existed, not so much now), and a few other GB and ICS based "from source" roms. So GB and ICS should still be possible on SK4G. And I know we plan on porting JB after we finalize the sgs4g to aries kernel port, and since SK4G and SGS4G hardware is similiar (plus or minus a few components) SK4G should be able to run JB.
It will all just take a little time.

Hahaha, this happened to more then just this phone. The only reason the galaxy s 4g has anything is because me and a few other people stuck it out.
There are other phones that never got anything and were more then capable of running everything up to jellybean.
The funny thing is, I hear a lot of users get all butt-hurty because their phone doesn't have the latest greatest rom. I say: too bad.
This is xda-developers.com, not xda-pimp-my-phone.com. The developers choose which phone they want to dev on, and go for it. Sometimes they are good and sometimes they suck. If a phone doesn't have too many developers, it's kind of a sign.
It sounds like there are a few devs around here that still want to make things happen.
So I wouldn't write off the sk4g quite yet. But also, don't expect things to happen right away.
Patience.

Aggreed 100% I've been here since pretty much the release of the sk4g and the original dev teams were on the ball but had very little to work with I bet you sduvick and ay0teddy got some patchwork gb to work or at least cm6 or cm7 running on the sk4g but kept it to themselves. I've watched this forum go downhill till the official discontinuation of the phone and I'm pretty sure if I managed to get gb or ics running on my sk4g is keep it to myself with all the kanging and immaturity on here. But that's just opinion. I personally don't think the sk4g could handle ics only due to the lack of ram. The hummingbird 1Ghz processor could handle it but lack of ram would make it unbearable especially for a stock OTA.

Bought mine used for $50 and plan to keep it till it craps out or I trash it(if it wasn't for the ballistic case I already would have) if that happens i'll look for another one most likely.
Well, as more and more people move on from the infuse, I'm just wondering if it's worth the developers time and effort to keep coming out with new roms. I imagine that within a year or so, there won't be a lot of infuse users left. But hey, if it floats your boat, keep working on it for the next 10 years. I myself will be moving on next February when my contract is up. It's been a fun ride, but time to get a quad core behemoth like the Note 2. Or maybe even the new Samsung Mega (6.5" screen). If it's available in the US.

No doubt we should be thankful. But it took GB a long time to be completely stable, (REVENANT rom is awesome) and that's why I'm only recently jumping on board the Gingerbread Express. Stability/100% usability are my only criteria. If JB had that, I'd be all over it like flies on excrement.
It seems like for a lot of people, installing new roms is like changing their underwear. Which is cool if you're into it. And actually, I know what it's like to install something new every other day being a linux user. I've tried every distro under the sun in the past. New features are cool, but at some point you have to ask yourself what do I do on my phone that a new rom will make better? In reality, it's probably not much. I need my phone to work, and work perfectly, that's all.
Computers are another thing. At least on my computer I can install Virtualbox and try things out before I go for the BIG INSTALL. But hey it's all good. If you can live with imperfections with new roms, go for it.

That sums up the beauty of android. To each their own, everyone likes something different. As long as I don't have major bugs, I want to run the latest and greatest. Some are like you describe yourself, all about stability. Either way, its all right here to get. I hope the infuse stays alive for a long time, and I'm sure the talented devs we have can iron out most if not all the bugs
