iOS5-like Notifications? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

How difficult would it be to do notifications like those shown in iOS5 (http://www.apple.com/ios/ios5/gallery.html#video-ios)?
They sure look good from a UI standpoint (I never found the stock Android notifications bar very elegant, or useful (it gets too cluttered).
If someone can build this into a ROM or a launcher, it would make many of us very happy.

No it wouldn't.
To me it looks like ****.
Pure copy of Android.

Only real difference I can tell is that the notifications are separated instead of all running into each other. Mail is under the mail title bar, messages is under the messages title bar, etc.

They do look quite nice. Apple always seem to get UI design looking good

Yes, but notifications have nothing to do with the launcher! They are included in the ROM itself.
No hope to find an app for that!

Making it would be easy, but finding someone that is willing to do it is harder
I could probably do it, but who wants it anyway?
Most people here are Apple haters.

Not really? They're just squares.

I don't like Apple but i would like to see this running on our device.i mean really they copied the notification idea from android
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using XDA Premium App

Why would you want something like that? Apple does many things but none of it is done properly.
Multitasking - its actually just alt + tab, apps do not run in the background, they are paused, that totally contradicts the term multitasking.
Browsing - wow I didn't even know they do not have text reflow, omg so lame, they just included it in this new update. It also doesn't have flash and the speed can't match android.
What UI? Oh you mean the app drawer, yeah it looks...limited. No scrollable wallpaper and no widgets, just a bunch of apps without any type of organization. I laugh at iFans telling me that they don't need widgets. Actually if you show off with some of the android exclusive features they say they do not need it, but once it's introduced in their crapOS they think its the best thing ever invented.
I'm only looking forward for the next android version which brings hardware acceleration, iOS will totally be left behind.

Oh great, lets pull the "patent" card. Samsung must of copied iOS by making their TouchWiz launcher appear as iOS.
Regardless of whatever someone suggests, Android is all about openness and options. If a dev wants to do it, go ahead. If you don't like it, then don't go in their threads bashing the idea.
The idea for Android is all about options, some you may like, some you won't. Move on.
The notification system actually came from a developer from the Cydia store. Apple hired him and he made their notification system.
Proof: http://www.gadgetera.in/apple-hired...ogether-a-better-ios-notification-system/834/

My bad bro i didn't mean to bash anyone of the idea of them doing this.

I like the feature of having sliders on the lockscreen for all the different types of notifications which unlocks the phone and immediately opens up the corresponding app. That's a very nice addon.

I cant believe the ignorance of this OP, "iOS5-like notifications" more like android like notification + weather it justs adds clutter to the importantance of notificaions i think just a degree # would be it maybe in a miui rom or somethin

This is true. iOS is a really aesthetically pleasing UI. Android just feels bare bones. I personally own an iPad and I was playing around with some Android tablets at the store and boy were they ugly. I don't know, it just seems so bad.
Why can't we have nice apps like Apple?

I can agree that Apple's apps are somehow better than Android. But I can assure you that, Android is growing ridiculously fast Probably just another few months, you will see that APPLE Android's will be equally good than Apple!
You say they are ugly? I can assure you that just searching around this forum, you can find theme and wallpaper and icon pack that is amazingly astonishing

We already have this feature via an application called WidgetLocker. And it is very nice, but apple is quite a but behind the 8 ball on this one. I have been running this feature via this app for at least 6 months now!

This is off topic, but watching that video just made me angry. Is apple seriously that arrogant? "iOS is the world's most popular gaming platform". Are you serious? I can hear Gabe Newell laughing from here...

/facepalm TouchWiz why do you fail me so?

So...
TouchWiz is terrible.
Exhibit A: You cannot choose specific groups in your Google Contacts. I have so many contacts in my phones that I just do not want, but since the Contacts app in Touchwiz sucks so much, hooray?
Exhibit B: I set locations in my Calendar, but they arent usable. Meaning I cannot click it to jump into maps for navigation (which doesnt really work either). It even shows me a fantastic map and a tick where my location is...WHY CANT I CLICK IT?!?!?! Things I expect to work...epic fail.
Exhibit C: The overlay sucks. Nuff said there.
Anything I'm missing? Probably alot. Any suggestions on work arounds until we see a Cyanogen?

What he said.
Launcher Pro won't fix his problems.
There's a couple of problems, but plenty of nice features as well
Swipe the notification for brightness, Swipe contacts for messaging/call, turn bluetooth/wifi/silent/vibrate in the notification bar. Not all bad. Make LP or ADW the launcher, and I think good outweighs the bad for me at least.
I guess I should have prefaced that with I am using launcher pro. Whoops
I agree with eman. I think all the very nice features of touch wiz outweigh the negatives. I would like to see the ability to select which google contact groups get synced. I how the add that in the future.
I've been pleasantly surprised with Touchwiz. Sure there are features that I would like to see implemented, but on the whole I like it. This is surprising to me given all the naysaying from the Android elitists.

You're complaining about issues that other android phones also have. You may not like the Touchwiz interface, but you can always buy a different phone.

I've never personally used MIUI but from what I have read people either love it or hate it. Why do you want it so much? What are the benefits?
its AOSP and the UI is different from the android we are used to here in the US. Even if you use a different launcher. Lots of extra features and customization to be done also.

I've used it.. and loved it on my G2. It's android with the iPhone polish man. Lots of great eye candy, downloadable boot animations themes, wallpapers, ringtones, notifications, etc... all built in. a GREAT task management/settings/net traffic tracker... built in.
I would suggest you give it a shot when it comes out. TONS of features.
Here's what i boils down to"
If you like a smooth clean polished and highly customizable UI (a lot of the work done for you.. it eliminated my need for quite a few apps I use for system management)... you'll like this.
if you want to run a stock vanilla form of android that allows YOU to do all of the tweaking and enjoy adb pushes and coding... run CM7 (which is also a FANTASTIC option)
I personally liked how aesthetically pleasing miui is. But I bought an android device to run android os not ios ;-)

I know BUT ios is polished so is miui. It's the best of both worlds
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA App
Right.. that's my point. it doesn't LOOK like iOS.. but i don't think ANYONE would argue that iOS has a lot more "love in the UI details" (ie... POLISH.. it's nice looking and consistently so). While android.. is definitely a hacker/programmers UI. VERY tweakable and functional.. just not that nice looking.
the resemblance it iOS is really peoples only objection to MIUI but the fact is that's only the default launcher. change the launcher and its no longer an issue.
Really?!? people think it looks like iOS?!? why because they're no app drawer? that's literally the only thing I can think of that's like iOS that isn't part of android anyway. (they both have dockable apps at the bottom, they both have a status bar with signal/time/date/etc). otherwise.. it's just Android with some UI love (polish). that's IT.. and like you said.. you can change the launcher.. but i don't see a reason to.
True. The only other thing is the way they changes the ticking system to the tab system. That's all i can think of.

But there are themes. If you really hate iPhone you can still live with miui.
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA App
I'm quite aware of that. I'm pro-MIUI.. Had it on my Vibrant since it was released for the phone. I was just saying the default theme is what turns people off of the ROM upon first glance.
There are lots of benefits to MIUI. For starters it usually runs VERY fast. It was the first rom to include toggles in the notification menu (CM7 does this now too). Also the menu's are no longer 6 squares, but listed. The whole OS is themable (CM7 is now too).
I am not particularly fond of the homescreen setup (No App Drawer) because all of your apps are on your desktop like iOS. The stock launcher is basically the same as iOS except you can put icons anywhere and supports widgets.
The Icons are very pretty and large, which I like.
You can accomplish most of this by using CM7, a good CM7 theme, and ADW EX with a MIUI theme.
I'm all about more custom roms. I enjoyed MIUI for a few days but damn CM7 nightlies always have me going back to try out the new features.
MIUI is a lot more than a simple skin. As others have said, its blazing fast, has amazing features built in (I really like being able to control all of my connections by the dropdown bar and even being able to reboot and such through the same bar) and is extremely polished.
The availability of themes can make it decidedly un-iOS very easily. The customization options built into the ROM are absolutely insane and I have it on my Inspire as well as my Captivate - I really hope someone picks it up and ports it to the G2x.
In comparison to most other devices, development on the G2x seems to be pretty slow overall which is a huge bummer. I guess too many people are busy constantly exchanging their devices to actually get cracking on development. *eye roll*

What do you like most (or least) about ICS?

Like the title says, what are the changes that you most favor in ICS?
For me, these are my favorite improvements (in no particular order):
1. Ability to swipe down notification bar while screen locked
2. Improved camera speed and quality
3. Vastly improved gallery
4. ICS Keyboard
5. Voice - to - text
6. Browser
7. General appearance/asthetics
8. Email, Gmail, and calender
Just curious to see what everyone else likes (or dislikes for that matter) about ICS.

I like specially the calendar (pinch to zoom and unzoom !) and the browser, almost as fast as my computer !
I can't really tell something that I dislike.
I love how "done" it feels. Everything matches the new UI theme perfectly. Also, it's stupidly fast. The one thing I was always jealous of WP7 and iOS users was that their OS's were just a bit smoother and faster. Now I can finally say that ours is perfectly how I want it.

I think you've hit the nail on the head. Everything is integrated perfectly. Everything is in harmony. Everything just feels 'right'.
I think its a major game changer for Google. ICS wipes ios5 all over the floor and then some.
My next tablet will definitely be the Samsung 10.1 successor (currently using an iPad) running a flavour of Android 4.
I'm smitten
No launcher crashes any more, no lag when exiting applications or generally swiping back and forward, and faster stock browser are the main ones for me.

I would ask in the ROM thread. I have seen that issue reported many times on many ROMs but I have no idea what the solution is.
HATE some of the icons... Overall it is very done and feels complete, except the icons look a bit unprofessional imo.
Such as the contacts and messaging icon. I use ICS with custom icons to replace the ones i dont feel fit properly. For example, the messaging icon is an awkward green and WAY too tall.
But over all it deserves a 9/10
Polished is a very good way to put the feel of using ICS. It certainly does feel "complete" and relaxed. Definitely the largest reason to love it.. right behind notifications + power options in notifications bar to do with as i please while it's locked
Keyboard is a solid step forward (and predictive text works better than GB from my use).
The browser is a HUGE step forward, but it's definitely not there yet.
Gallery works much better, far fewer issues than before. HOWEVER, i hate having to click the photo twice to get into the gallery after taking a photo.
Also, IntelSoftApps has really hit the nail on the head.. the contacts, messaging, calendar and gallery just look like they don't belong there. What would be the least intrusive way to change these (editing the apk?)?
What I love about ICS:
-the overall design and how polished it is
-how smooth it is
- all the new gapps
Shouldn't the caller id, when receiving a call, have a transparent background? When someone calls there is a big black box covering lower half of the screen with the little white headphone... Is it a Nexus S bug, or an ICS feature? I think it would be better transparent...
I like lots of features of ICS. I love the new font, the market icon in the app tray, the ability to create app folders, and the ability to swipe away single notifications. Honestly my only real complaint is with the app drawer...I hate having to scroll sideways. Logically when you have a list of something, you expect it to be vertical, not horizontal. But hey, that's how iOS does it so that's how Android should do it too, right? *rolls eyes*

If you have a passcode you can't pull it down. And that is for obvious reasons, because if you have passcode on your phone you obviously don't want random people getting into it or seeing stuff, so that's why the notification bar can't be pulled down.
As for your iphone comment, if you really wanna use a **** phone, with **** tweaks then go ahead and get it. But the reasoning for it not being pulled down while having a passcode is obvious.

guess you right in that sense, that the iphone is for the average user. but once it is jailbroken. Probably like flashing all this stuff to your phone as you call it. All this is in, Cydia, the modified app store for all of this stuff you mention. You can add and remove tweaks to any iOS without having to "flash" anything. Of course it can get complex.
I have a friend who works for Verizon who convinced me into trying a Android. Plain and simple. iPhone will be my next upgrade. lol.
Maybe im not doing my searching right or my google history needs erased again. But all I want on my phone is apps installed directly to SD card. (read this wasn't possible). Its okay if it's not possible. notification badges. None seem to work on my ROM for some reason. (CM10 latest nightly). Well I take that back, SMS does. Their all enabled to in settings, gMail, phone, SMS.. Also now I have to go to my app drawer to click on a call to answer it. doesnt stay on my screen to accept. More themes. Seeing them on Google play. Their mostly ugly. maybe it's the lack of retina display. But nothing fancy either in the same line. I'll keep searching and asking i guess.

I'd recommend trying out different AOSP roms, such as Liquid Smooth, Paranoid Android, King Kong, AOKP, and get a sense of each one. You can also download Nova or Apex launcher and they'll both give you more options for notification badges. Stock AOSP android is pretty plain but that's the point of it though, The customization is up to you
I'll look into them. Im running CM10 ROM now. It's not bad. It'd probably be much greater if I could get my apps to store on external SDCard instead of internal. I'll keep looking them ROMs or whatever you mentioned to see if they have anything i'm looking for..

Help making Touchwiz look better?

I'm trying to theme Touchwiz to look more, AOSPish
And would like some assistance, I have no coding skills whatsoever so I'll just be ripping stuff out of the systemUI.apk
I plan on changing those navbar buttons (God they look like crap)
The Quickapps flip button, to look like more minimal, maybe like the green dot Lenovo use to have on their HC tablets
And that blue divider on top of the NavBar (Why did they put that there.
And if anyone knows if its possile to change the panel that slides up, please let me know!
I'll get into it as soon as I get the latest version for the n8013 usa, (few hours)

IT IS TIME WE STOP BUYING INTO APPLE'S ISSUES WITH SAMSUNG & ANDROID. It is the reason Adobe stopped supporting Flash on mobile which we all like. TouchWiz looks a lot better than stock Android with the black app drawer. TW is just adds a transparent affect among other things plus the multitasking. Somebody should be trying to make stock Android and IOS look more polished liked TouchWiz.

That's the one good thing a about all flavours of Android they are highly customizable. As for Apple they make a great product don't get me wrong, but I think the main reason Apple is losing traction is because it treats is users like children, you can only have a cookie is mommy says you can

Actually, I think Apple is losing ground because better technology has been coming out at more and more affordable rates, and Android has been getting better and better each year. I know of a lot of people who went from the old Android (the crap, free ones basically) to Apple because of how ****ty Android used to be, compared to Apple. However, with the better, affordable tech that has been coming out, it's given people a chance to see how good Android is now, so people don't have this "amagawd, I'm computer illiterate so I must use Applez" mindset as much anymore.
Also, I think that Steve Jobs was a really great marketeer. Without him to convince people to love the new products.. I think people just don't feel as excited.

What the hell are you talking about?! I didn't see the OP mention anything about Apple or Samsung. This is a thread about making Touchwiz look more like AOSP. I don't mean to be rude, but if you aren't interested you don't have to read the thread.

I agree with OP I hate the blue divider on the nav bar, In fact, the nav bar seems to cluttered imo. Having the nav bar time out to the dots on every app would be a good work a round. If its a matter of theming im sure it can be done quite easily.
Wow! I thought this thread went completely ignored and got no replies.
So sorry guys, I had very little success and got discouraged.
I didn't know there was actually activity here.
I'm down for giving it another try though. (lol, I replied 5 months later)
@ckavvouras That looks awesome! Can you share how you did that please? Or share your systemui.apk?
@edirector What the deuce are you talking about?
@relldroid Yeah I think the faded 3 dots look so clean! But I just couldn't find the image in the roms I searched in.
Also this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2186102
But for the 10.1 of course
