I have a htc deisre... long story short HTC are offering ,me an upgarde to a HTC Desire S.
Does anyone think that the phone is worth the upgrade, dont get me wrong i am still going to go ahead, its free so might as well.
Also regarding the boot loader as it coming from HTC will it be unlocked ?
Hell yes. I've come from a rooted, customed and tweaked Desire, and the STOCK Desire S out performs it in every category. I'll fish out the lengthy comparison review I put on amazon and post the linkin a bit.
Hopefully HTC will roll out unlocked boot loaders soon. The XTC clip service can be another option if you can't wait.
So far there are very few things making me miss my rooted phone.

I came from the deisre to the desire s,and am happy with it, regarding the bootloader i don't think it will be unlocked yet but its easy to get it unlocked at any reputable unlocking shop.(Got mine done for £15)
Had a play last night with it now its s-off, i rooted it installed rommanager, etc looking forward to installing a mui rom once there's a stable one now there's more ram etc on the desire s.
So in general it an exellent phone, the only problem been the dropping wifi signal when holding it in landscape mode but i think there will be a fix soon if not already
As promised, so save me cluttering up the forum with a massive post, here is the link to my lengthy review for the Desire S on Amazon...
http://www.amazon.co.uk/review/R3PUO01NBQQ3KW
Good review I thinking to my self that yes no need for rooting because on my desire I have the same Rom then I moved to sense 3 now that makes me want to root ;-)
As HTC are giving me an upgrade directly from them do you think it will have a unlocked bootloader?
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Cheers. Mine is also from HTC direct and is still locked down. There seem to be plenty of people offering the XTC Clip service for around £15 though.

This is a poll to see how many people are waiting for news regarding the Sensation's S-OFF before buying
I really don't mind. I've used my HTC Hero with Stock rom 1½ years and that phone is slow compared to all the other ones. It would be great however.
My option isn't in the poll.
"No, I want to root and install a custom ROM, but I can't stand waiting for this awesome phone!"
Yes I'm holding off til unlock

I'm pretty sure this phone will be S-Off sooner or later.
I will buy when i buy it. Doesn't matter if S-Off comes later.
The earlier the S-Off comes, the earlier Dev team to optimize it,
The earlier my life will be organize and productive.. The better.
Hope this phone is good built. Then this will be Epic of my life,
Hope will last for 3 years i hope.
I'm still not convince about its built.
Im afraid will fall and break immediately.
but sexy she is. When it falls, hope she wont scar.
Sensation conspiracy theory...
The problem for me is as follows:
I could get a sensation from vodafone at retail price since last week.
What scares me is that HTC hasnt made clear what they will do with the bootloader.
What if they provide an S-OFF only for the unbranded units that will start selling in Europe next week?
That will be a problem for me...
Maybe that is why they are keeping silent regarding the unlocking of the sensation's bootloader.
They could be waiting for the vodafone exclusivity to end.
The same could hold true for Tmobile as well....
Any comments on this?
I already ordered the phone...so you know my vote. I dont mind waiting for a way to manually unlock the bootloader and install custom roms. Until that happens, i will still have a pretty awesome device...win/win
I just picked up the phone last night...I couldn't hold out any longer. My G1 and HD2 were too outdated and I found this to be a worthy replacement (finally). I CAN wait for the S-OFF.
Its going to be hard to wait for me too as soon as the sensation is sold unbranded in Europe...

Just been holding off till the exclusivity ends :/
Bought mine today (Branded T-Mobile USA); and I love my MyTouch4G with Cyanogenmod on it...
We at least need to get temp root soon so we can get some of this damn T-Mobile bloatware off... Damn thing has more fat in it then container of pure lard.
I voted yes to waiting. But tbh, if it isn't unlocked soon, I'm just gonna wait for something else later. No point in buying it if there's a better phone coming soon after unlock.
Side note: It doesn't hurt me to wait, but it hurts HTC to take to long.
I'd love to get it but I'm waiting.. canceled my preorder.
Apart from the ability to customise OUR own phone as we wish I need root as paid applications are not available where I live. I also need to be able to backup and restore my data incase of a factory reset ... etc.
Let's see if that happens before a better phone is announced.

I'm still unsure. I bought the Incredible S a couple of months ago and sold it 3 weeks later because it was s-on and no root/s-off solution was coming up.
Now I'm torn between getting the Sensation when it's s-off or waiting for the European Evo 3D. I like the Sensation design better but Evo 3D has better specs.
I'm just keeping my good ol' Desire for now and see what happens during the Summer!
Bought mine on Sunday 6/12. I don't mind waiting

I thought HTC said they unlocked the bootloader for all HTC devices?
I would have hoped that after the Sensation Evo 3d thing we would have seen this one ship S-OFF. I guess it means this one waits until September? I don't think that this one was on the list I saw on the updated FB posting. Probably has the same protections/encryptions as the Sensation. I remember when the G2 got S-Off, a few phones came long for the ride. Perhaps that will happen with the independent effort for the Sensation and the 3d.
well good, thanks for saving me the upgrade(s) (i needed two).
I'll wait now and see if this gets s-off'd before i renew my contract in sprint.
I'll keep my G2
Wouldn't it be better said that the SUBSIDIZED units will not have S-OFF, versus "retail". When I think "retail" I think full retail sticker price, which would be S-OFF.
The thing is that HTC kind of borked over on their unlocking promise. The Sensation and Evo3D both shipped S-ON. We recently found that the HTC CHA-CHA shipped with S-OFF. I think all of the phones already in production before and during that statement are shipping S-ON.
I Haz 3D!
Can't say i'm surprised
How do we check if our unit is S-OFF or not? I don't know how to get to bootloader on this device. Been a while since I rooted a phone.
EDIT: Realized I had Fast Boot mode on. To disable it, go into: Settings > Power > Fast Boot. Once disabled, power down the phone. When powering it back up, hold the "Volume Down" key to get into Hboot to see if you have S-On or S-Off.

that promise was made well after the devlopment of this device began but there are s-off devices out there so i think the hacking/rooting community will have a way to get s-on to s-off soon enough.

i still expect full retail devices sold by t-mobile to be s-on the difference isnt in what you pay for it, it's in the branding. those with s-off devices either have an htc branded double shot, or a pre-release demo mytouch 4g slide with t-mobile branding. either way, the phones sold by t-mobile, subsidized or otherwise are s-on.
So I just checked my phone and of course its S-ON.
My question is (sorry for noob question - this is my first android device) - along with tools to root, ROMs etc, would there be a way to turn this to S-OFF? In other words, earlier S-ON devices were 'hacked' too, right?
If not, I will have to return the phone - the bloatware on this phone is just unbelievable.
Yes, I'm sure this will get rooted and/or get s-off shortly.

Just think of S to mean security.. So S-ON and S-OFF are describing the state of the phones boot loader. If the boot loader is S-ON (security-on) then it is "locked" and any changes made to the system will be reset every time the phone is rebooted. If the boot loader is S-OFF (security-off) then it is "unlocked" and changes to the operating system will not be erased when the phone is rebooted.
The "way" you seek already exists on the Sensation 4g, which has about the same hardware as the mytouch 4g slide. This tool for unlocking the phone's boot loader is called "alpharev X". The tool is in beta stages, so it of course has not been released to the public. Although I'm almost certain it will work on the mytouch 4g, there is however, no guarantee that it will. Since the tool is not available to the public, more than likely HTC would not have been able to fix whatever exploit alpharev X uses to gain control over the boot loader. Alpharev X already works on multiple devices so there is no reason to think that it wouldn't work on the mytouch4g slide.
I certainly hope that it does because mine will be delivered tomorrow
Can't wait to play with it!!!
Oh yeah... And I want to return the Sensation 4g I Just bought.. I don't like it at all :/
Edit: revolutionary is the name of the tool and it has been released for the sensation 4g.. So it won't be long now before the mytouch 4g slide gets S-OFF.
Root and S-Off are what's holding me back from getting this phone. It certainly holds a lot of promise to it, but I think I'll stick with my G2 for now.

yeah, I almost waited too... but I was jonesing for a dual core phone. it looks like someone obtained temp root on one of the S-ON retail MT4G slides though, looks like we already have the ball rolling.
Temproot has already been achieved, and considering the sensation and the mt4gs's bootloaders are near identical, when Alpharev-revoked releases their S-OFF patch for the Sensation today, I'd imagine that the mt4gs will only be a week behind.
I just did the warranty mumble jumble right now. Since it's only been a couple days since the OTA update how likely is it her replacement will have the latest update preinstalled? Does T-Mo keep all phones up to date prior to sending it out or will it have the pre-ota software and as soon as the phone is turned on the option the download the OTA update pop up? I have my fingers crossed since it is a very recent update release..... anyone know or get a replacement sent to them today?
That's likely.
It's a gamble but if so....I'm currently testing some of my modified exploits on the new H-Boot (which your phone will have if it came with the OTA) to see if it unlocks. Unless HTC-Dev, Someone else, or I release someway to unlock...then your stuck
I just got mine today as a replacement for my MyTouch4G. 1.22 is the older firmware right?

The difference for those of us that have already had them vs those of us that just got them as replacement to an older phone is the ones receiving them as a replacement to something else get brand new phones still sealed up in the T-Mo/HTC box so it's unlikely they will open them all back up to update the hboot vs replacement for previous MT4GS owners get a "used/refurb" one that comes in a generic white box...... I have a feeling it won't have the older 1.44 hboot which means the phone will 99.9978% chance get put on Ebay to buy an Amaze Now for the UPS man to hurry up and deliver that phone any moment
**add**
Disclaimer: The following is my opinion based on previous/current ownership of the phones mentioned and compared. I'm sure others here will disagree and you all have that right. Just sharing my experience for others that might be looking into buying this phone and are interested in keyboard experience.....
Only reason I'm tired of this phone is the thickness and the junkyness of the keyboard. The G2 had a POS keyboard and unfortunately it carried over to the MT4GS... HTC has no excuse when there are truly horrible phones like my Sidekick 4g that have a far superior or "true" keyboard with a dedicated row of number keys up top, spacious and a world class keypress experience vs the spongelike, cramped feeling of HTC keyboards......with no dedicated number key row. I'd rather have a thinner phone with no keyboard than a thicker phone with a halfbaked keyboard...

1.44. Mine looked to be brand new when I got it. Sealed in box. I was gonna try and trade it for a Sensation. But I like the phone and its just stock right now to.
if its 1.44 then you can root...but is it 1.44.1107? if so then you can root
its 1.44.0007 Could I still root?
hmm r sure its not 1441107
i believe the original stock HBOOT is 1.44.0007, and once you run Revolutionary, it turns to .1107?
in any case, .0007 is supported by Revolutionary, so you're good.
lol sorry im so stupid...its been a while since I rooted this phone so I couldnt remember my old hboot yea so you can root with revolutionary or MR ROOT i prefer mr root... well because I made it

It should look brand new cuz if they sent it to you as a replacement to a different model then they are sending you a brand new one in sealed box as it contains the charger, back cover, battery, informational/disclaimer booklet as well as a new unactivated sim card. However, if you are already a current MT4GS owner and are getting a replacement then it will come in a white plain box with the phone sans all the other stuff in the box with a informational sheet that says STOP and has info regarding returning your damaged handset
UPS dropped off the phone. Replacements based on what I received today have not been updated and have the currently rootable 1.44.0007 Hboot. Now to decide if it's going on ebay to get an Amaze as there's no point in my g/f and I both having MT4GS'.
Does the T-Mobile HTC One S always come S-Off or was I lucky on my trade today? I traded my mint Sony Xperia Play (AT&T) this morning for a HTC One S, also mint. I've traded, bought and sold to the guy before and I know he gets his devices new by special means and knows nothing about rooting, bootloaders or S-Off.
Anyways I got curious in snooping around the bootloader menu and to my surprise found it to be S-Off...
Was this luck or do all/most/many come this way?

Oh okay. I was surprised to find it S-Off when I got this thing. I couldn't believe my eyes. That will save me a load full of work, especially the part were some of the tools require a Linux OS instead of Windows. Now ofcourse Linux is a download and installation away, but my "temporary" (now permanent) laptop is so old it only packs 128mb of ram (max can ONLY reach 512mb) and any type of Linux installation just hangs and never installs no matter how many hours you leave it running.
Not to mention some of these devices require the "hotwire" trick, and every time i need something (such as a paper clip) it is nowhere to be found.

htc wil never ever give you a s-off device for free.
you have several situations. here are a few.
1: the previous owner of the device,
A was so kind to leave the device s-off, sold it
B he wasnt able/willing to get the s-on back properly, sold it.
C he ****ed up the device, was able to get it running again, left it as is, sold it.
D...
when i sell my devices i always ask you gonna customize it, if yes i leave it s-off. if not full stock

Nah trust me his knowledge on rooting and so on is VERY LOW. It once took me nearly an hour to show him how to flash a rom on a device I sold him and in a day or two he already messed things up since the rom would wipe many key apps when given an old fashion factory reset. ANOTHER good hour wasted explaining to him the process over phone. If he were to buy these devices used already then sell them to me I would believe that perhaps that person did it instead of him. He gets them brand new in a store he works in, instead of commissions/bonuses for his many sales his boss lets him pick a free phone of his choice as long as its not 100% modern (e.g. a Nexus 5. wish I had that type of boss) in which he gets the opportunity to make more money off of that but remember, his boss doesn't have to pay cash, and he's basically stuck with selling it himself.
If he cant flash a simple rom, or even use a simple app to root a device, I doubt he will ever be able to S-Off an HTC. Also if he were younger (lol) I'd consider the possibility. I honestly believe that this thing may have mistakingly been left S-Off or something by the factory. Or maybe it served a purpose back at HTC.
Whatever the case, it was a big surprise to me.

I just assumed they had to sell them to that area that way so they could be used with their particular carrier.
