[DEV] Huge FPS loss in portraits or 180° orientations. Is that fixable? - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys.
I tend to appreciate more and more the Transformer but there's still a deal-breaker for me concerning the graphic performance.
There's definitely an improvement in 3.1 in landscape mode. However any other rotation divide graphic FPS by 2 approximately.
As a result, web browsing one activity between many others is not much enjoyable.
By using the tablet, it seems kind of obvious that the graphic hardware is underpowered for this display resolution but is it really that or a driver optimization issue.
netarchy told me yesterday that overclocking the GPU didn't help noticeably, which leads me to the conclusion that the limiting factor is the GPU memory bandwidth.
Maybe we can affect its timings, overclock/overvolt the RAM itself? I'm sure LPDDR, optimized for the lowest power consumption has some headroom in this department.
Also, other graphic operation seems slowed down by the CPU, like panning through launcher's panel which becomes smooth with heavy CPU overclocking.
During 2011 I/O I remind romainguy (not 100% sure it was him) told he thought this issue was fixed in 3.1 for XOOM. Is it?
I'm sorry not having answers to all this today, maybe you know more than me and would like to share your thoughts on that?

I'm the one who asked that particular question related to Honeycomb's performance in portrait mode.
More than a time, and also on Android Issue Tracker, Romain guy said that it's a tegra2 issue and that it will be fixed in the next release: "The hardware can't deliver the same kind of performance as in landscape"
When replying my question, he said that "probably" the fix was released in 3.1 or if it wasn't, it will be in the next update.
As i heard, 3.1 didn't solved the issue so we should have to wait for a possible 3.1.x
Since it's tegra related, haven't you had a look at the latest driver available from nVidia? Maybe it's already fixed.

Awesome, you definitely did well asking as it's an outstanding issue, thanks!
Also thanks to your detailed answer I think we can safely assume it will be fixed for us too at some point as romainguy is must be confronted to it pretty much everyday when working on his daily work.
Or.. they're already working on newer hardware, which is very probable and will ignore this issue like they ignore some other issues, assuming it's good enough as-is and must focus on future dev/products.
AlessandroIT, I guess now we can search for random commits here and there in NVidia related stuff ^^

I didn't found anything in tegra's repository related to portrait performance but i think that it won't be writter so clear in the commit.. so you should try to compile a kernel with the latest source available and, hope it works as it should

Wow, I couldn't agree more with what's written by daithi.j in http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=15958 ^^

I'll try to catch romainguy on IRC or twitter and ask him.

Thank u for trying to investigate and find a fix for us. This is a serious problem for me aswell.

Yes, it's a very big problem. The first thing that I've noticed about the Transformer was the laggy homescreen, using adw launcher ex it's a little bit better , but nit perfect like my previous Ipad sadly. Good luck Supercurio

A little offtopic: all my Nvidia graphic cards were noticably slower in rotated mode (I had an LCD with pivot).

I also hope that You will release a specific version of voodoo app for our tablet, I loved it on my sgs and the sound quality of the Trasformer now is not as goo as it should be.
When You put it on the market i will certainly buy!
Thanks for your work and support to the community

So it's a Honeycomb issue, then? Why does it do that exactly, when it's just the orientation that's different and not resolution or something?

It's a Honeycomb + Tegra 2 issue methinks. Maybe an updated driver will fix it in future. Don't hold your breath though!

Quick live wallpapers+sticking?

First off am I the only one that wishes the original opengl would stick? Performance was alot better for that one (especially for the nexus wallpaper). Is getting the performance of the original live wallpaper we had and the sticking of the new patch possible? Right now that is the only problem stopping my phone from being the sex.
EDIT: Problem seems to happen when another widget is updated. Its not perfectly smooth, but not bad, but when a widget updates it really slows down the wallpaper to a noticeable halt. I doubt im the first to notice this, but for anyone else that really wants nexus wallpaper, having less widgets on your main page seems to help.
I moved the news+weather widget you see below to another page and it seems to jitter less.
I agree. Losing the performance from the new OpenGL isn't worth having LWP's. They might have a fix for this when Toast's Awesome Sauce ROM is complete.

Yeah I disagree with "there is no point in having them if it is slower".......the patch works pretty dam well with most wallpapers its just the peski nexus being alittle to slow to be usable for me. MagnusRagnarok my OP was not an attack on you at all. I am extremely thankful for what you have done, and hope you have not taken my post that way. I am just trying to see if more people feel the same way as me. For me getting the nexus one wallpaper running alittle bit better would get me closer to completing my phone.
Ill bump since I edited my first post. Hopefully someone finds it helpful.

Hey guys, I know a lot of us have been dying to get the nexus wallpaper working without having to do the opengl fix to make wallpapers stick, seeing as it made the wallpaper ran really choppy. I found a way to get it to stick, run smooth, and not have to change the opengl. I used the update zip posted by emerica6541 and it stuck right on and have ran smooth ever since. Granted he did modify the wallpaper so the lights are smaller, but I think it looks better that way on our heroes due to the smaller screen. It has survived multiple reboots, and over 30 mins of sleep time. I am running darch's legend rom though, so I'm not sure if this will work for damage's or flipz's roms, but its worth a shot.

Just a note though, when you first set the wallpaper, your phone will freeze for a min, then it'll take you to the bootscreen. Once it reloads, you should be good to go.

I upgraded but didn't really notice any significant difference in speed - mind you, I'm unsure what you mean by "stickyness" anyway - if you mean lag, I didn't really notice any before upgrading!

I had a massive improvement in overall speed of pages loading and removing 'stickyness' when scrolling pages, so it must help all tablets?

I have realized it's near impossible to get a smooth browsing experience (ALA iPad) unless you flash a custom ROM and/or move to EXT4! And even after that it will never be that smooth. It always sucks when loading sites in Flash. IMO, our only hope is that we get a honeycomb update (unofficially ofcourse) which has APIs for hardware acceleration!
Try downloading the faster browse addon for dolphin. Its a kill background addon.
Helps in my browsing when it acts up. Plus i dont browse with flas... only on demand. Helps with loading pages.

[Q] How close is Paul Burton to Beta?

Paul (or anyone who knows)...
How close are you to a Beta version of your ICS port for the OG Transformer?
I think you have done more than anyone in trying to get this stable before Asus releases their version, and definitely offer a way to get Root on the TF101 ICS.
I really just wanted to start a thread that would allow for Version updates to your port, where people can see a status from the developer himself!
Thanks!

Oh right, the ROM. Beta is a blurry line, I may not even use it and just keep incrementally improving it until it feels like RC time (and when I say RC I mean a build I actually consider suitable for final release, not the linux "release candidate but we'd never actually consider releasing this" terminology). I think once I get libsensors & libcamera written the hardware support will all be there at least in a basic form and then polishing and fixing smaller things will improve it quickly. I'm hesitant to put a timescale on it - I can't spend the time of a full time job on this and the time I do spend on it is a little sporadic. I'd hope to have sensors working within the next week or so, if that helps. I'm also planning to look at doing OTA updates of some sort now that it's basically usable for common tasks (for some people), to keep people updated easier and perhaps lighten the load on my web host by doing deltas.
I apologise for the terrible joke above...
Without access to the full source code for the drivers, any ROM based off of generic Android will never be Beta or better...
Paul's ICS port is from the standard Google ASOP tree, with lashed in binaries from other sources. What Asus deliver will be built for the specific platform.
There is a HUGE difference.
My experience of Paul's ICS was quite good, the biggest gripe for me, was the REALLY choppy sound playback, which was a deal-breaker for me, and I went back to honeycomb.
im not to sure about the binaries just being ported in i think paul is writting a whole lot of his own stuff, i could be wrong tho. i read a txt where he talked about writting his own drivers for everything cuz asus code is sloppy, he said he would prefer write his own than just plug in binaries.

No they haven't. What I'm saying is that they don't need to - I can just write them myself. Some of those are open anyway (wifi, bluetooth) and don't come from asus. Little asus addons like setting up the MAC address are easy to reverse engineer and rewrite (and MAC for example is done like that). libaudio I've already written but obviously there's a bug in the buffer management somewhere which causes the skips, and input still needs doing. libsensors won't be too much work, and libcamera shouldn't be huge either.
People outside of asus can write code too

Just a side note (and I'm not I repeat not complaing about this thread) for those who are asking for updates (nobody asked for updates here) about Paul's releases you should find them when they appear. It does not make it easier for him to complete them if he has to answer a zillion posts about when it will be ready (still not complaining) for release. Think about this...... he could be watching tv or going to the pub or doing stuff that he really needs to do like school (still not complaining) instead of coding.
Again I would like to emphasize that I am not complaining about this.

Could you give us a status of what still is not working with your latest release Spark?
Now that you have a name for your rom, and have replaced the original warning with your new one, would you say this release is usable for most things?
Thanks a ton for your work...who needs Asus, we got Paul !!

TF700T a Bit Laggy....Apps to Blame?

Hey guys. Just got the Infinity. Physically the device is great. Love it. Noticed after loading a couple of apps (not many) that the tablet seems a bit laggy going from program to program and screen to screen. And even some app crashes. Ran pretty smooth on initial use as they always do. It shouldn't be laggy at all with the specs. Could I have an app that's not written for a tablet causing a problem? Memory issue? Or anyway to check that this thing is running like it should? I would think it would be smooth as glass. Not overly concerned but just a bit. I've only had it for two days so just generating some dialog. I hate to jump to a "return it" attitude as the next one I get may have another issue or do the same thing.
Also it seems most programs aren't written yet to see the "microSD" card and treat the internal "scdard" as an external. Went through this with my Galaxy S3. Here we go again!
no lag on mines. i downloaded a couple of torrents last night and still was able to do other things without hiccups.

You're probably new to this forum?
This is a known I/O issue on this device. Everyone has it, one way or another.
Currently there are speculations that it is due to SW and not HW, so it will be fixed eventually.
Try turning off wi-fi or wait for some time for the tablet to settle down after heavy downloading and installing.
It should get better.
But, as soon as you are downloading something or copying and such ... and when you try to do other things in parallel ... the tablet will get laggy again.

Yes i am new to this device and this section of the forum. Thanks for the info. Glad to know it's probably SW and not hardware as this is frustrating. Is fast then bogs down quick. Maybe a custom ROM to fix this soon.
Mine was pretty laggy too and earlier today I did a cold boot and it's helped quite a bit... Find the other post in this forum about Gmail crashing and there is a link to tell u how to do it.. Hope it helps

Tried the tablet the whole day with new apps, loading archives, extracted 600mb while watching youtube in HD, no problems yet. But I only have a few apps installed yet.
Only thing I saw is when the tablet switches from landscape to portrait, the wallpaper jumps from the left side to the right and gets then finally centered. A bit annoying.

Glad to hear (sorta) that it's happening to others as it denotes a software issue and not hardware. Hard to tell sometimes. I would certainly want to return it if there was a memory or CPU issue but obviously don't want to go through that hassle if I don't have to. Went up to BB today and they didn't have the Infinity but did have a Prime. The Prime was fast and I asked the salesguy (who claimed to know all about the tablets) to see if mine seemed laggy to him. He said it looked great but it also was not connected to wifi. It did seem to run faster without wifi. Starting to lead me to believe that the radio firmware is not perfected and when connected or connected to a poor wifi source it slows.
When I got my Galaxy S3 it was a little laggy even with a custom ROM until I connected in anther state to LTE and the phone was smooth as butter. Wifi performance does seem to affect the entire use of the phone/tablets quite a bit.
Not apps to blame but android 4.1, for poor optimization

Maybe JB will fix some of this. It's supposed to be smooth. That is whenever we get it.
Prime users have been reporting big improvement with JB. Since ASUS likes to use the same NAND across all its tablets, it should help us out as well.

Thanks for the info. This gives me hope. Hey I'll be in SFO this weekend. Can't wait to stroll around downtown amongst the homeless and do some photography.
Mine was laggy as all get out for the first day. Especially while installing apps. Since then it seems to have settled in. Kinda like when you flash a new ROM and it takes a day or two before starting to act right. I was admittedly a bit concerned at first I've I've been on the edge of my seat awaiting for this device, but I'm really happy with it now.

This is good to know. Thanks. I did a hard reset and it helped a bit. Still laggy and the wireless is not stellar but as long as it's not the hardware I'm ok with it as JB is coming and custom ROMS. I do appreciate the feedback. Thanks. :good:
BTW: How are things in Fayette-nam? I used to fly in there a lot.

The hardware seems to be rock solid, JB or just some updates will likely iron out a vast majority of it's problems. Keep in mind we're all early adopters, these sorts of things are to be expected. Fayetteville is...well it's Fayetteville.

I've applied the scheduler change, most of the build.prop tweaks and the minfree modifications from this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1758160
Overall it seems more responsive. The tcp buffer changes in build.prop helped a LOT with wifi performance. went from buffering streamed 720p movies to almost being able to handle a pretty high bitrate 1080p movie.

I just got the device so I need to start reading up on rooting and doing some tweaks. I guess it's a good time to root it. If there are problems I am still within my time to return it.
The new firmware should solve a lot of these: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1800593&page=2

Where are they getting this update? I'm currently on US 9.4.5.21 and there is no OTA update and the latest on Asus' site is 9.4.5.22
Try updating to .22 manually and then check for OTA updates in the system settings.

[Q] OnePlus One Stuttering

Hey all, I'm currently running the latest nightly build of CM 12.1. Everything seems to work flawless. My only only issue that still seems to persist (still happens in CM 12s and Oxygen OS, I also cleaned wiped) is this micro stutter. Its most obvious in games like Flappy Bird. It nearly makes it unplayable at times. I tried switching to performance mode, but it still happens. Any thing you guys would recommend?
Anybody?
I have no idea what you're talking about. A micro stutter? Could you perhaps send us a video (screen record) of the stutter or a better explanation?
Where do you see these stutters? Do you see graphical glitches?
If it only happens in a specific game, it might be a problem with the game itself. Try contacting the developer.
Fwiw, I'm also on CM12.1 but I don't play a lot of games on my phone so I can't say for sure

Thanks for the reply! It seems to be in every game I play and in some of the UI. Its literally this micro stutter. I'll definitely send a video to better show it, its just hard to explain Its like the frame rate cant stay smooth, instead of running steady and smooth, its has these short pauses. I noticed there were some other people on here that had the same issue, and then there's a bunch of people without it, I hope its not a hardware issue.

Its difficult to get an accurate screen record because the video itself doesn't show an accurate frame rate. This thread has the same exact issue as me http://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-one/help/63hz-refresh-rate-causing-major-t2834227
same here

I completely agree with you. The phone is so awesome, I just don't understand why it has this stuttering issue! Its supposed to be butter smooth! I don't want to return mine, but this issue is becoming a deal breaker for me

Yeah, I guess were not the only ones. One of the users on there said they were working on a fix though.
