I have an Inspire and I'm getting slow speeds. I'm on unlimited HSPA+ plan and have the correct sim.
What can I do to get better HSPA+ speeds? Currently I'm getting around 2 down.
Thanks!
Maybe that is as high as you can go in your area.

My iPhone 4S gets better speeds though. I thought there was a way to root it to make it faster such as fgd radio?
It's not the rado. It's the build.prop that enables the faster speeds. And I would have thought with the gingerbread addition it would have been enabled by default.
But sure you can root it and install a custom ROM made for better speed (all of them) or adjust the build.prop yourself. To root use Advanced Ace Hack Kit. It is stickied so it shouldn't be hard to find.

Thanks how to I adjust the build.prop? I tried to search online but can't find any step by step info.
There is a recent thread in the development section.

I'm curious about the download speeds as well. Whichever rom I've used the max download speed I've been able to achieve has been 2up, 1down. I've even edited the build prop and played around with it for a day, didn't see any significant changes.
Rebooted the phone twice after making the changes, etc..... question is, did i need to leave the changes for a day or two or even more to see if it actually helped?
On the other hand I have a couple of friends that work installing the towers (or whatever you call those things that gives us data) - in a nutshell, they say that the download speeds is hardware related and not software (they know nothing of rooting phones).... that kinda confused me more than my usually state of mind.
Sent from a dream.
Its true to an extent. For example our phones is capable of 14.4 mbps. And say the tower is a 48mbps. Our phones is limited to what its hardware capable but you can do software tweaks to optimize it to reach its Max. This is where builprop edits and apn settings can make a difference

Would editing the build.prop values perhaps stop the bug? or possibly add reception?
I have been looking around and in the amaze forum there is a thread that claims that editing some of these values can boost speed so that got me thinking...what do you guys think is this far fetched?
Plz post the link i will try

the build.prop setting depends on the ROM your using...
didnt work for me it involved changing the value of the fast dormancy rule.
others say it works, Maybe my phone is faulty ?
As azzledazzle wrote, I'm one of those the fast dormancy cancellation in the build.prop did the trick and made my phone available much more minutes than before.
Fast dormancy works differently on different providers, or not at all on some. Trial and hopefully not too much error
When I had my Galaxy Nexus and I was connected to my home wifi network, it would hold the connection strongly and I would barely ever see it disconnecting, now with the S3 it seems to just drop and sometimes not connect
Is anybody else having such issues? is it just simply weaker?
Also, in terms of gps. When I start a maps application such as Waze, it takes a while to lock on. Sometimes I have to go and clear agps and update it for it to get a lock. Anybody else get this too?
or should i go to verizon and ask for another device? I would rather avoid that since I'm not exactly sure they would give me a brand new device vs a refurbished one or something.
Lots of people having issues with WiFi drops. Its a known issue. I don't know if they're independent from poor data connection speeds or what...

I'm also having some troubles with GPS lock. I can open up maps and it will sit there for minutes without locking. It isn't WAY off, but it usually puts me within a radius of 1000 ft or so. As far as Wifi I haven't had issues.
I am having random GPS issues too... sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't.
I am having the similar issues with the wifi and gps. I can't tell whether the wifi sucks, or whether it just looks like it has less connection because at least it still seems to work well. Right above my router in my room I only get 2 to 3 bars, where on my old Dinc I would always have full. The gps is also a bit finicky. Sometimes it works almost right away, where as other times it will never lock on. I am running Synergy v1.4 and it works better, but when I was running v1.3 it never worked at all. My friend also has a galaxy s3 and when I compared them side by side, this is inside her house so be wary, hers locked on with in a couple of seconds where as mine would never lock on even after 10 minutes. I'm not sure if this is a software issue, or hardware, but if anyone has some insight that would be great.

Thanks, since I have no more to offer... :good:
So I just add that anywhere in build.prop? Does it matter if it is under a certain header?
EDIT
Went to the bottom of /system/build.prop put this is there, saved, rebooted, tested GPS again and it still won't lock.

Supposed to be receiving replacement device either today or tomorrow. I'll use it for a day or so and see if it's any different.
Put it in this AM but will have to see when I get home if it changes anything. I'm not sure but it looks to be more related to the WiFi issue.

I have the newest Synergy rom v1.5 which is supposed to help with GPS lock so we will see if that works, but is your current device using the stock rom? If so please compare the differences between your replacement phone and the old one.
Yeah, my recommendation for both was going to be to install Synergy 1.5
Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk 2
Did some speed tests and gps status tests with the phone stationary sitting outside with view of open sky while on synergy 1.5
Going to install synergy 1.5 on the replacement and compare.

Unfortunately it didn't seem to help much. I had a call into verizon about the issue so I'll be going back to stock and visiting a store to get a new sim. Hopefully it will fix it. I still feel it's because I'm in a fringe area and when the cell radio drops it wigs out the wifi radio. Iirc they are on the same chip so it kinda makes sense. I have 0 issues at work with the wifi but I have a much better cell signal there.

I am also on the edge of towers and get wifi anomolies. My wifi shows a connection and the data arrows work but there is no data (or it is very very slow, on the order of bps). I concur that the 4g dropping wigs it out.

Has anyone found any build.prop tweaks that boost signal or wifi for the nexus s 4g that work or maybe perhaps some media profile.XML tweaks that let the camera take better pics or maybe play video back in better resolution????
Seriously? Take better pics, play high res movies is all hardware related for as far as I know lol.
For better signal, try flashing different radios.

Try:
ro.ext4fs=1
debug.sf.hw=1
pm.sleep_mode=1
video.accelerate.hw=1
debug.performance.tuning=1
What good it will do on 4.0+ android I do not know. It did wonders on gingerbread back in the day.

What does ro.ext4fs=1 mean
(just being cautious what i use on my Sony Xperia S)
For a while i thougt i was in t-mobile g1 forum
Ext4 is a linux filesystem, though I don't know what that command specific does about it.
If you're feeling lucky, you can open up the phone and put some solder ontop of the goldplated contacts for antennas to improve signals such as data and gps: http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Nexus-S-Teardown/4365/1
