[Q] Missing Software Update option after Factory Reset? - HTC Inspire 4G

Pls help! I'm just factory reset my HTC Inspire 4G yesterday and now it missing AT&T Software Update option under Settings > About Phone menu. What i need to bring it go back? Anyone else has the same issue?

You wait. If you need any off market apps in the interim, you use the Sideload wonder machine or root.

~Information~
The following are instructions that I have come up with to unlock the "Unknown Sources" option on non rooted Android phones that do not have the option available. By unlocking this option you will now have the ability to install non "Android Market" applications such as "TeamViewer" and more
~Warning~
This was performed in a HTC Inspire 4G so results may vary for each phone
THIS PROCESS WILL RESET YOUR CONFIGURED SETTINGS TO THE DEFAULT (Display, Ringtone, Wallpaper, etc.) BUT DO NOT WORRY BECAUSE IT ISN'T PERMANENT. ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS RECONFIGURE IT AND ITS WORTH IT IF YOU ARE UNLOCKING THE OPTION "Unknown Sources"
1. Go To Your "Settings"
2. Go To "Applications"
3. Go To "Manage applications"
4. Go To The "All" Tab (or any tab that will display all your apps)
5. Find The Applications "Customization Settings Provider"
6. Click On "Clear data"
7. Go Back To "All" Tab (or any tab that will display all your applications)
8. Find The Program "Settings"
9. Click On "Clear data"
Finished
If You Go Back To "Applications" You Will Now Have The Option To Enable "Unknown Sources"
If It Worked For You Please Submit "Yes" in the poll. If it didn't please submit "No" in the poll. I would also be glad if you submitted a reply to the thread to keep it alive.

He didn't say he was missing the unknown sources option. He said the AT&T Update option. I think he is just looking in the wrong place because it us not under About phone, it has it's own sub category, so maybe he just over looked it.

Thanks you for help. But i can't found this option on any category. On HTC website they said this option is under About Phone --> "Users can proactively check for this update by going to Home>Menu>Settings> AT&T Software Update> HTC Wi-Fi software update" This is link from HTC website: htc.com/us/support/inspire-att/downloads/ Are this option available on your phone? If it on other sub category, pls tell me the category name.

First of all, you said you factory reset your phone. What state was it in before you did this? Was it stock? Rooted? Running a different rom? Was there an issue you were having that inclined you to factory reset?

The phone is original, non root or make any thing change on ROM. I'm only install some game and change some settings under Setting menu. I'm do factory reset to restore these setting to Factory Setting + remove all game for install new update over OTA. After reset i can't found this option

On my stock phone the AT&T Software Update option is right above About Phone at the bottom of the main Settings menu.

I was wondering about that. It's been awhile since I had a stock phone.
On the near stock gingerbread ROM I'm running, its the first option you see *after you choose* 'about phone,' so its a sub item of it.
In the op's case, then, it should be identical to yours, unless the OTA you received changed its location for some reason.
OP, if you don't see it on the list that appears after you choose 'about phone' and its not the next item listed after 'about phone,' I honestly don't know what to tell you.
I don't understand why it would disappear from your phone. A factory reset, by function, doesn't do anything to system-wide settings menu options that I'm aware of, all it does is remove data, your personal info, apps, etc. Essentially putting it back the way it was when you first took it out of the box. Out of the box, that menu item can be found, so I don't know.
Maybe somebody else will stop in who has the answer. I'm stumped. Especially since you've never even rooted the phone -- the only "normal" way something like that could get messed with.
I'll keep my eye out for an answer for you, but hopefully you'll get it solved soon.

I had the same thing happen to me. Factory reset, then the update was gone.
I called ATT on Saturday and asked them to push the update out to me again. They agreed to do that, but I am waiting on it to update. They said it might take 2-3 days.

Now this raises the question in my mind if we all might be suffering from a little bit of misunderstanding as to what the OP's issue is.
If what you described as happening to you is in fact what is actually happening to OP, then that's an easy fix.
From what I remember, the phone still has an option to check for software updates, even if there aren't any available. But I could be wrong. It's been known to happen occasionally.

Are gingerbread ROM is Android 2.3? What languages has on this ROM? Is it have Chinese language? Can i upgrade to this ROM by myself? Can you guide me for this?
I did not install any updates through OTA so it is impossible to change location.

yes, Gingerbread is 2.3, but until an official ATT update comes out, you'll have to flash one like mine, but in order to to that your phone needs to be rooted, first.
The name of the ROM I use is "Inspired Ace" by user gtgx65x, in the dev section.
I don't see Chinese under my language options, but maybe you could find some way of getting it on there. I don't know, I never needed/tried to change to another language.
For your current situation, maybe try doing another factory reset, again. Sometimes doing something like that over ends up fixing the problem. May work, it may not. Just something to try.

So disappointment because not have Chinese. I'm have some issue need your help:
1. Can we add another language to the ROM before flash? Can you post a screen shot of the option under both Setting & About Phone menu on your phone?
2. After flash this ROM, the Model under About Phone will display Inspire 4G or Desire HD because It's based on the latest official HTC Sense 2.1 Gingerbread release for the Desire HD.
3. Can we root the phone and only repair the Setting menu?
I'm newbie so can you tell me detail how to root and flash the ROM? (from start --> final)

Yes, that's the ROM I'm running. I don't know if you can add Chinese support or not, you'll have to do some research on that question.
I can't post screenshots right now, but I will tell you that I have software update on my menu, as I described previously. You won't be able to use it if you are rooted, BUT, you won't need to use it, because all of those updates are available here, instead.
Before you do anything, you need to read this guide...

You have to root first. The links for rooting are in the above-linked guide.

The rooting process itself will unlock you.
Doesn't matter what ROM you choose after. As long as you root, you'll be unlocked, and able to flash any ROM + any updates you can't get now because of your current problem.
It will be worth it. Just take your time, and STUDY the rooting instructions before you actually do it, and when you are ready, follow the instructions EXACTLY, and you won't have any problems.
It looks complicated at first, but it just takes patience and a little undivided attention while you're doing it.

Someone with a successful update -- please read!

Just about everyone is having trouble installing the official JH7 OTA update... except a very few!
Those people who successfully installed the OTA JH7 (and got the "system updated successfully" message), please help your fellow XDAers out! We could use a Nandroid / ROM manager backup of your updated firmware!
1) Root your phone (using One-Click Root)
2) Install "ROM manager" from the market
3) Flash Clockwork recovery using "ROM manager" (select Galaxy S Captivate)
4) Backup your current ROM using "ROM manager" (save this as my-personal-backup -- you don't want to share this one)
5) Perform a "factory reset" (to clear out all your personal stuff, under settings -> privacy)
6) Re-root your phone (same as step #1)
7) Re-Install "ROM Manager" from the market, and then REMOVE your Google Apps account from Settings->Accounts and Sync
7 Alternate) Re-install "ROM Manager" via side-loading using attached APK and Sideloading Wonder
8) Re-flash Clockwork Recovery (same as step #3)
9) Make another firmware backup, and save it as "JH7-OTA-Stock" (or something)
10) Share that backup with us! It saved it in your internal SDcard memory under clockworkmod/backup
11) Restore your "my-personal-backup" firmware with "ROM Manager" to get back to normal
This will allow us all to try out the update. Thanks for whoever steps forward!
EDIT: I have attached my Titanium backup APK for ROM Manager -- you should be able to side-load this for step #7 "alternate"
If they do this and set up their market again, won't it save their username and password?
Wouldn't side loading Rom Manger be a better option?

I think so... but it would only be temporary. Once you restore back to your first backup, the bloatware would be gone again. Yes, the backup you share with us may have bloatware in it... but we have become very efficient at removing it

Successful update is having the phone say "Update was successful" after it reboots. If it ever said the update failed, it didn't complete the update. It may have updated a few things (which you see in the "About Phone" section) -- but I highly suspect it isn't a 100% update and key things may be missing.
Nothing from me. Update is failed at 50% so I am not going to be trying again in hopes of keeping my phone unbricked. Sorry guys.

I get a fail at 50% too.. the only way I can think of us getting this update is either Samsung fixing it (which is unlikely anytime soon), or someone giving us a ROM manager backup.
I think that most of the people that are sent to this tread are newbies that may be scared of the "Root your phone" part of it. Can we attach the link that explains how to do it?

Ditto, I think the people who HAVE successfully updated through OTA are newbs (I don't mean that in a derogatory way) because if they weren't newbs, they would have already flashed a few roms, played with rom manager, and used odin..... which wouldn't allow their device to update.

Well if you have successfully gotten the update, look in the dev section and you will see a thread titled one click root by tgagruman. Download that zip, unzip. Put phone to usb debugging and open the galaxy one click root application. Click root and watch the screen. When your phone goes to recovery mode select reinstall packages and hit the power button. That will be it.
Next you can download the sideload wonder machine to install the rom manager apk on your phone. After that it is just making a backup through rom manager and making a zip to host.
Question. Why is everyone freaking out about this update is it not thesame as the jh7 put on samfirmware.com weeks ago?? If not what is the difference my dad has the same phone and i did the update for him today and it was successful. I told him i dont need it i already have it. Are they the same

[Q] Rooted stock ICS - cannot disable lockscreen

I have a rooted sensation with stock ICS. I need to enter a PIN every time I switch on the device screen, which is really annoying. I had a VPN set up, deleted it, same problem. Rebooted, same problem. I think it has something to do with the Exchange account I have set up, but I cannot remove that.
I tried the settings in the "security" section, but they are greyed out (see attachment).
Any ideas?

I don't remember which post it was, but someone in response to a similar query said that you could check out the device administrator applications, one of those would be enforcing this. In that case, the exchange app was the culprit.

Hi man,
This could be related to the info on the 2nd post.
Do you have any exchange account setup in your device? (from your company)
If yes, this is the reason, if not you may have to wipe your device and reinstall everything.

Question about installing OTA

I was supposed to be part of the soak but for some reason my phone is invisible to the Moto update servers and they cannot push the update to me. I have the update file someone gave me a link to download. I have two questions about how to install it.
1. Since I am rooted can I just put it where Moto would have downloaded it to and then my phone will update it like it got the OTA?
or
2. If I install it off the SD card will it just do recovery first and then display injured android man, and then have to reselect the zip package again to finish instlling the update?
I would prefer method 1 if possible. If one of the devs or a knowledgeable person could respond I would appreciate it. I'll give Moto about six more hours to get this straightened out, otherwise I am tired of waiting to get my Atrix 2 onto ICS.
Hi. I don't suppose the end result would be different, whatever method you choose.

Where does moto put the zip file so I can try putting it where the OTA would have downloaded to? Then when I go to check for update it should say an update is ready for installing. Do they put it in the cache directory? Someone who knows please let me know. Thanks.

AFAICT this seems true, you I could run a leak#2/soak based ROM as a second system (first system too?) with boot menu manager by following the guides:

Yes, it is /cache... but I think you also need the .crc file of the same name along with the actual .zip - not positive though. And, it can take a little while for it to recognize it - but I have done it that way, by putting it in the cache folder - also, it will disappear if you reboot.
But, you do know what you are doing, right? There is no fxz yet...
---------- Post added at 08:17 AM ---------- Previous post was at 08:12 AM ----------
Edit.. since it's the same files as leak#2.. for the .crc file, you could just make your own if you don't have it:
-Just create a new blank file with notepad++
-Add this as the first and only line (no blank lines after)
Code:
3114145323
-Then, save it as Blur_Version.55.13.25.MB865.ATT.en.US.crc

Yes, I know what I am doing. I used to develop roms for LG P999 but have not played around with my Atrix much. LG does their OTA updates very differently and downloads them in pieces all over the place so no way to use the method I am suggesting for the Atrix. I don't care about being able to fxz back as I just want the phone on official ICS; but I do appreciate your caveat. Thanks for the reply.
If anyone has the .crc file please upload somewhere so I can grab it. Thanks.

I know you know what you are doing.. just had to throw that in there..
Here's the .crc file from the last leak from 9/5/12... should be the same as the soak one: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/61960599/Leak_09.05.12/Blur_Version.55.13.25.MB865.ATT.en.US.crc

Thanks. I will give them a few hours to get to work and see if my phone is visible to the update servers now that I have done an FDR as they requested. If so, I will just let the OTA do its thing. If not I will manually update my phone.
Also I do not think you can be rooted to update the check will prevent you from updating, also you have to be as close as stock as you can..... Meaning all bloat must be unfroze.....
One more note there is a Q&A section now so try to post questions there.....

Could the fact that you're not in the US, are now unlocked and on another network have something with failure to get the OTA!?
You can be rooted. The update asserts only check for the original system files to make sure they have not been modified or deleted. It does not check for extra files like superuser.apk or busybox. Rooting is not a problem. I set superuser to OTA protect and it worked. After the update my ICS was still rooted without me having to root it.
For the person that wants the leak the OTA is leak # 2. It is exactly the same. Just find thread with download link for leak # 2 and you are good to go.
Would installing beats audio drivers using the app be considered tampering with system files? And would it prevent me from receiving a ota?

No, they wanted people like that to make sure it worked. Just had to do an FDR and then was good to go. Got the OTA and on ICS now.

Sorrry but what mean FDR? because I'm in that situation: Im not in US and I have the phone unlocked, and I'm using it with other operator... Is just ended the soak test?... because the phone say me "Your phone is updated, Is not required a update in this moment" (Translated from Spanish) when I look in Settings -> About the phone -> Update, and I'm have the system version 55.13.25.MB865.ATT.en.US.

You have to be someone that was invited and filled out a survey about six weeks ago. If you are you need to go to the Motorola Private forum. Go see how others are requesting it (not allowed to really talk about it). FDR means Factory Data Reset and it is an option in Privacy in Settings. It erases all your user settings, app data and you are back to square one like when the phone came out of the box. For many people it was required to get what they wanted.
If you were not invited don't worry. Usually the official rollout of the OTA will come within a week of a soak test if no problems are found. It is the same as leak # 2 so just look on this forum and you can install that manually. The release is solid so I see no reason the OTA won't be going live to all AT&T Atrix 2 devices very soon.

EK-GC120 Verizon Update

I have been notified of an update for my EK-GC120 (6ca5626c77cd.update_EK-GC120_GC120VRALL2_To_GC120VRAMC4_FWD-1.zip) is the file i pulled from the cache folder but it refuses to apply to my camera. Is there an alternate recovery available anywhere for this device? TWRP or CWM? I have posted the update here I am hoping it includes the remote viewfinder functionality that was originally missing from this version.
http://d-h.st/users/swjpilot/?fld_id=16995#files
Update: I had changed the GmsCore.apk file...luckily i had backed it up. After restoring the original file the update applied is applying....Hopefully Root will remain will post update as soon as it completes.
Update: SuperSU says it was able to restore Root Access whoohoo!
Last Update: This does finally bring the Remote Viewfinder capability to the stock camera app.

ExynosAbuseAPK before the first update. You may be able to ODIN back to 4.1.1, run that tool then keep your root through the subsequent OTA's.

I would try installing Kies and having it restore the firmware. It will most likely put you back on the original firmware but i don't know that for sure. Worst thing that could happen is a factory reset of your device and you stay on your current code level.

Since VZW does not support Kies firmware updates, I am afraid to try it. I will have to wait until someone finds the 4.1.1 release of this device and ODIN it.
Anyone still have the boot.img for the latest verizon? Even the full update will work to extract it. This is the only missing piece to extending the custom kernel to all variants.

If you are still around can you confirm you used the "Exynos" Abuse apk to root your Verizon GC120. The Samsung specs page for it aren't clear about whether it's an Exynos quad core using a qualcomm board or an entire qualcomm chipset/board. Thanks!
And if anyone Verizon has found a way to root the current Verizon version and/or the odin file for 4.1.1 please reply here or let me know! Thanks!

That link is dead end. Can you please repost that firmware update?
Another thing I learned while I had my ATT galaxy tab 8.9 was that Samsung likes to use the same hardware in their South Korean version of their devices with cellular and in their US devices with cellular. It's almost certainly because of the LTE requirement. Wouldn't you know that such is the case with the Galaxy Camera. The South Korean version of the camera has a Qualcomm board just like the Verizon one. Maybe the firmware for it, which can be found on Sammobile at the link below, can be helpful.
http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/1/?model=EK-KC120S&pcode=0
EDIT: To clarify more, the Korean version uses a Qualcomm 9215 baseband board with Exynos 4412 while the Verizon version (based on Samsung own specs page) uses a Qualcomm 9615 which has it's own applications processor.
CPU Z says the Verizon GC120 DOES use the Exynos 4412 (smdk4x12). It makes no mention of the Qualcomm board on Samsungs' own specs page. They don't make this easy...
Still need any Verizon build anyone has (original 4.1.1 or 4.1.2 update which should be found in /cache).

E:V:A said that a few posts up. I dunno what your problem is, but the more specific the file name, the better chance of finding the right file. If this section were labelled "Jiggity Janx" and not "Galaxy Camera Android Development" I would be directing every post to you. It isn't, and I'm not.
Edit: Did you try editing the build.prop with the values for the old version and attempting to do a system update? I have not researched how FOTA determines eligibility, but if it is like any normal system app, it uses the system properties.

Github/Sourcforge - post technical information for development, no interaction or FEELINGS required
XDA - development FORUM that requires HUMAN interaction
Now....
I appreciate the robotic side of you not taking anything to heart and continuing to want to assist. Unfortunately I have to return the model I received as I immediately noticed it had the vzw demo app on it and that the screen wouldn't time out. That means it was a verizon floor model and is unusable as intended. I am returning that one for a full refund but already have another on the way that I have been guaranteed does not have that problem (for $25 less even).
So long story short I am only willing to mess with the files so much. I know one wrong move with the build.prop could cause it not to boot and without a way to restore am not willing to take that chance with one I have to return. I will be able to do more than pull files from the other one once I receive it (and have time).
Thank you again for assisting us all with development on this device.

Look at the number of developers who have left xda butt-hurt about some comment a nameless, faceless text blob made about them because of how they read it. The device suffers, the users suffer, and some kid is up in his room crying about a hobby gone wrong.
As for the rollback, it was only theory anyway so if there is any doubt about what to change its better to find an alternative. If you could get images of the partitions from stock condition, it is possible to build the install. At least that is all done off the device where it won't corrupt anything. You could root, get the system, data, cache, and boot then merge those with the Korean release to fill in the missing parts. To the best of my knowledge, the bootloader and such are not region specific. That should be verified first, though, because you can't go back later.

SM-G955U1. XAA version. Bootloop problem, any help?

MY BAD, PLEASE MOVE THIS TO THE CORRECT SECTION. I'M REALLY SORRY.
Hello!, my mother bought this phone for her in the US and from day 0 it has been having problems. She couldn't use wifi or bluetooth for example, and sometimes it just kept restarting till it worked again, but without any connectivity functions, except mobile data.
I tried to fix this updating the phone using Samsung Smart Switch to the last build (AQL1) but now the phone is stuck on the boot screen no matter what I do.
Tried flashing with Odin, it worked, but the phone is still on boot loop. I read somewhere in this forum that you can install an older version of the bootloader to take the phone out of this hell and I did it, using the build AQK2 bootloader but no luck, same problem.
Also, the phone doesn't have USB debugging enable nor OEM unlock either. I can access both recovery and download mode though.
At this point I'm out of ideas, can someone help me with this one?
Thanks in advanced.

No I haven't, I will give a try soon through web chat.
I mean, this shouldn't be happening, it's a brand new phone, all over the internet are people with the same problems as me and looks like so far there is no solution.
Maybe it's a faulty phone/hardware? My knowledge is not enough in this matter.
See you!,

Thanks for answering!, here it goes:
1. It says SM-G955U1
2. Carrier: XAA
3. Done, still the same.
An update from my last post:
After a few bootloops the FRP screen showed up, as the phone can't use wifi yet I managed to access using mobile data and enabled the USB debugging, but after trying to enable wifi the phone froze and went on bootloop again, so still the same but with the USB debugging enabled. I'm currently on the build AQK2.
Thanks again, and I hope we can fix this.
Update 2:
I cleared the cache, after a few bootloops the phone actually boots (gets to the lock screen), and it restarts again while the message "Android is starting" is loading, so now it's a different type of bootloop I guess. It does the same even in safe mode.
I will turn it off for now.

Well, if you check samsung's official forum there are a few threads with 15+ pages of people complaining about wifi issues (https://us.community.samsung.com/t5/forums/v3_1/forumtopicpage/board-id/GS8QA/thread-id/862/page/1 and https://us.community.samsung.com/t5/forums/v3_1/forumtopicpage/board-id/GS8QA/thread-id/30601/page/1) about bootloop problems, (https://us.community.samsung.com/t5...id/GS8QA/thread-id/3920/highlight/true/page/1) also there is a post on another webpage talking about bootloops on this model and how to fix them (https://thedroidguy.com/2017/12/sol...p-issue-s8-turns-screen-remains-black-1079013).
I know it's not representative, as you said, millions of phones has been sold, but what I meant when I said "all over the internet" is that you can easily find people with this same problem. This shouldn't be happening, not on any phone even less on such an expensive phone.
I think the phone is officially dead, I took it to a well known local technician and even him couldn't fix it. My nearest official samsung service is 1600km away. On the other hand, my aunty got for herself an S8 and it's working perfect, so it's just bad luck for my mom I guess.
The phone had issues since she bought it (wifi and bluetooth didn't worked at all, but she is not really a tech person so she thought it was fine), the phone was working with some bootloops from time to time and after a while it fell from and got a little crack on the top but it didn't change the behavior of the phone, it was still ****ed up. That's the thing, because of the crack I'm pretty sure they won't take it back or even try to fix it (for free at least), they will say the problem is because of the fall. I'd been reading a lot about this and seems that I'm pretty screwed D:
I will sell the phone for parts. At least I will recover 60% of the initial investment.

If you have some 'proof' the problem existed, before the crack, and can prove when the crack occurred, or reasonable determinate approximation, small claims court will vindicate you, and Samsung will have to pay.
Sad to say would take a little time of yours to get them there, but it is an easy process, and with reasonable ability to determine/evidence those two things, a sure win.
But still a PITA.
