[REVIEW] My new SamChg vs. my old CM7 Droid - Verizon Droid Charge

I am upgrading from an original MotoDroid. While that phone has served me very well for the last 18 months, it died a week ago, and had to be replaced. Time for an upgrade!!!
My MotoDroid was running CM7 Nightlies, so I'll be comparing to that.
Style:
While this is a matter of personal taste, I think the SamChg has sleeker lines, and the glass blends nicely with the buttons at the bottom. The MotoDroid was way more solid with more metal, though.
But, no more lip from the MotoDroid.
Winner: SamChg
Hardware:
MotoDroid Quadrant score: ~400. SamChg Quadrant Score: ~1500. Plus, the SamChg has 4G. I got 7 Mb/sec of real, sustained downloading (!!!), not just a benchmark speed. Even the SamChg 3G speeds measured about twice as fast as the MotoDroid.
Winner: Are you kidding? SamChg, by a long shot.
Battery Life:
I regularly have my email checked throughout the day. I have the same settings on both phones. I also have both phones set to 3G only.
The MotoDroid would be at around 70% battery after a moderate day's use. If I never used the MotoDroid during the day, it would be at 90% after 24 hours. The SamChg on the other hand, is at 70% battery after 6 hours of no use (left alone overnight). If I use the phone much at all, my SamChg battery life is in the 40's before my work day is through. I absolutely have to have a charger with me at all times, and now keep the SamChg plugged into my laptop at work.
Winner: MotoDroid
Desktop UI Speed:
The MotoDroid was significantly faster than when I first took it out of the box. I was running a 800 Mhz kernel with CM7's Gingerbread-based kernel. I also was running ADW Launcher EX, which significantly improved the desktop speed and appearance. Live Wallpapers were not an option, unless I wanted to live with a sluggish desktop experience.
Out of the box, the SamChg was a bit chunky with the desktop UI. Small delays occurred while using it. I also did NOT like the TouchWiz UI. So, I installed ADW Launcher EX, which improved the speed a little and usability a lot. Then, an hour or two after opening my SamChg, I installed the rooted Voodoo kernel and Lagfix. Everything runs silky smooth now, even with Live Wallpapers. Even better without LWP, of course. Very, very nice.
Winner: SamChg, hands down.
Functionalty:
This isn't a fair comparison. I'm using modified ROMs on both, and CM7 is a great Gingerbread-based ROM with a lot of added features.
There isn't much that the SamChg offers functionally over the CM7 MotoDroid, so I'll just list some of the hardware and software features that I really miss on my SamChg:
Stay "On" when connected to power.
Bluetooth Wireless tethering to our Honeycomb tablet.
Notification LED
Charging LED
Real Keyboard (But, I don't miss it too much)
Real Camera button (But, I don't miss it too much)
Not a big fan of the puzzle pieces in the TouchWiz UI. Maybe I'll get used to it.
One item in the SamChg plus column (for me) is the physical Menu/Home/Back/Search buttons at the bottom of the screen. I have had lots of times where I pressed the virtual buttons on the MotoDroid, and I wasn't sure they registered. At least now, I'll know that I pressed the button (even if the SamChg doesn't respond)
Winner: MotoDroid
Screen:
Not much to say here. The MotoDroid has Gorilla Glass, and it appears that the SamChg does, too (based on other postings). The SamChg has an absolutely beautiful screen with vivid colors, and it's larger than my MotoDroid's.
Winner: SamChg.
Camera:
Honestly, who cares? They both suck, and wouldn't even be sellable as low-end cameras. Totally worthless hyped-up megapixel ratings are listed for phone cameras with dusty gunked-up plastic lenses and no real focus or low-light capabilities. If you want to take quality pictures that you really care about, get a digital SLR. If you want to take pictures you don't care about, either one of these is fine. The MotoDroid has a physical camera button. The SamChg does not.
Winner: None.
Modability:
The MotoDroid has been hacked a lot longer, with a better set of ROMs and tools available. The SamChg is new in the game. The SamChg is not bootloader locked, though, which was a big part of my buying decision.
Winner: MotoDroid, for now. Hopefully, both will be winners as time goes on.
Overall winner: SamChg, with a few caveats.
Here are my main concerns:
1) The SamChg was a really, really nice upgrade. I would have loved to get a dual-core 4G phone, but with the poor battery life I'm seeing now, I'd be afraid that the dual core would only make things worse. My biggest complaint is that the SamChg won't make it through the day without recharging, even if I have 4G turned off. This problem may be fixed over time, as leaner ROMs are introduced. Hopefully so, or I probably have an early upgrade in my future. If the battery could easily make it through the day without recharging, the SamChg would have been the hands-down winner, and probably the best phone on the market.
2) The face proximity sensor is WAY too sensitive. The sensor is to the right of the earpiece. When in a call and using the dialpad, if I get a finger too close to the sensor (approx. 1 inch away), the screen blanks out and the dialpad is unusable until I move my fingers away. This has happened quite a few times now. Retraining myself should fix this over time, but maybe Samsung needs to adjust the sensitivity to really fix this issue.
3) Acquiring a 4G signal is kind of dicey, even in a strong signal area. Most times, I go into the phone settings and modify the Mobile Network System Selection to reacquire. An annoyance, but it should be fixable in software.
Cheers,
¿GotJazz?
If I've helped you out, send a little "thanks" my way ...

You obviously have something set to update way to much fro your charge to be down to 70% after no use. I managed 36 hours before recharge and that included phone calls and email. More than ever with my DX

Again, you need to manage something better. Either your screen brightness/timeout or stuff updating in the background or GPS.

Never had this problem.

Nice review! Thorough, I like it.
However, I am also concerned about your battery loss. I lose maybe less than 10% over 8 hours while I'm sleeping.
With all the goodies (bluetooth, 4G, full brightness, etc.) on I am losing about 10%/hour with moderate-heavy use. I am also syncing 3 gmail accounts, facebook/twitter every hour, and WordFeud push notifications.

My only issue with the Samsung is that the radio is nowhere near as sensitive as the Motorola. I have both the Original Droid and Droid 2 Global and they're both substantially better. The loss of signal really has an impact on 3G speeds. I may end up returning the Charge and waiting for either the Droid 3 or Bionic.

Hi, ShotgunSam - I made two changes last night that seemed to have made a huge difference in my battery life:
I loaded the Debloated ED2 v4 ROM, and
I removed K-9 Mail, and switched to the TouchWiz Email app.
I'm not sure if one made more difference than the other (or, if one made no difference at all). But, K-9 Mail polled my email every 10 minutes for one account, and 30 minutes for another account. TW Email uses the Verizon mail server to "push" email (which, I think occurs every 10 minutes or so).
Not sure how much the Debloated ED2 v4 impacted things.
I'll have a better idea after a day of work tomorrow on how the SamChg battery life is. Looks very promising, tho!

I know that I'm not the only one with the dialpad blanking problem. At least one other user mentioned that they are seeing the same thing in another posting.
I may have to return my SamChg later this week if this is a defect.

craigg1 - I haven't seen a significant signal decrease on my SamChg. In the building I work at, I used to see about 2-3 bars of 3G goodness at my desk on my MotoDroid. When USB tethering, I would get around 500-600 kb/sec download rates.
On my SamChg, I can't get a good 4G signal reliably, but I get about 2-3 bars for 3G pretty regularly. My USB tethering download rates for 3G are pretty consistently around 1.5 kB/sec, tho - so I assume I'm getting a better signal for those bars (or better hardware on the SamChg).
4G at my home, though, pegs the meter! I could probably turn off the WiFi to my SamChg now.

As for the puzzle piece lockscreen, if you're on a deodexed rom nitsuj posted an aosp one. Been using that since it was posted.

boostedjti - I'm running the Debloated ROM now, which also seems to have removed the puzzle-piece stuff.
FWIW, I didn't mind the puzzle lockscreeen itself. But, after using simpler Android versions of the phone answering screen, the TW puzzle phone answer screen was annoying to me.

Touch Pro & Battery life dispute!

It has been quite interesting to watch all those threads for the above topic which of course lead to nowhere so far.
I would not exclude myself of the dispute, however we need to think of the issue in a practical methodology and thus conclude what the facts would lead to.
There has been many complaints and unhappy people about the battery life in Touch Pro and many other models. Just a simple question I ask; What would be an acceptable avarage battery life with one full charge? I am sure responses will vary coz there is no standard expectation nor a universal benchmark for this issue!
Whatever the vendor guarantees as an operating expectency measured in hours, is more or less what you gonna get although many wont accept it, but this is it, you gotta live with it!
There are 1000s of users with 10000s of applications and conditions that have high expectations, but they all get even results, so why complain?
What I am trying to highlight is if many have expressed their dissatisfaction of the battery life, I just say; who's right & who's not? Do we all expect to have the same results? My device may run for 3 days with one charge and couple of calls throughout, others may have tougher uses and expect a battery to last for 7 days in a row with just one single charge?
Just think about it and have a collective understanding.

ya made a wise statement here.....couldn't agree more ...
yep, 2nd that
a wm device drains a lot more battery than other phones because it does sooo much more. and its not device specific either
maybe if someone creat app to change CPU to 200- 300 and so on if don`t used for heavy apps will incress battery life. In the PSP there is app like this ans when I used it only for play music set procesor to 100 Mhz
I have had the phone for a week now. I like it. I like how pretty much everything works. I don't see much of any problem but the battery life. Why didn't they put a larger battery in. My Mogul has a 1650 in it. Yesterday morning the phone had a complete charge. I went to worship and used it very little in the morning. By noon time where I showed the phone off to a friend who is thinking of getting one, the phone charge was down below 50%. It should have been 70 or 80% and no less, IMHO.
I've posted this link before on a different section.
http://www.hardwarezone.com.au/reviews/view.php?id=2726&cid=24&pg=6
I get nearly 4 hours as well if I use mine full on. Tried watching a full length movie and my battery meter shows ~50% afterwards.
I thought OP might be interested in seeing this review.
I don't think it's really an issue of someone being right or wrong. I think 24 hours is just a particular limit for cellphones, and once it dips below that we start to worry about the next time we'll be near a power plug. After all, these are devices that we use on a daily basis.
If the batteries lasted 2-3 days, then it wouldn't be a big deal if we forgot to charge once in a while (late night, canceled flight, forgot charger, etc). But as it is, people are having trouble pushing it past 24 hours even under modrate usage, which means if they miss even one charge cycle, they're dead in the water the next day.
Of course usage is a different issue; but if you start modifying your usage habits in an effort to prolong battery life, that's still the same problem. You could turn off 3G, stop mail checking, always close background apps, etc; but without any of those features you might as well use a regular dumbphone -- no point in getting a device like the Touch Pro in the first place.
Last week we went on a short holiday. Both my girlfriend and I have a TP running RomeOS v1.13. She has a GSM prepaid card and I have a GSM/3G/H card.
Her battery lasted 4 working days occasionally calling home to check on the kids and sending a few SMS messages.
I used my phone to check email and LIVE messenger. My battery lasted no more than 20 hours.
So if you by a full featured phone, just to use it as a basic phone you won't complain that much I think. If like me you want to use a full set of features pffffffff... And if you don't mind I would like to keep it at that
My first serious WM phone (I don't count the ridiculous HP 6315) was the Samsung i730. I am a very heavy user and I got used to charging it in he car & carrying a spare battery in my pocket. If it made it to 6PM without going dead I was happy.
The Touch Pro has the same screaming 528 mhz processor speed, plus a vga screen. If it makes it to the end of the day, then I'll be more than happy (haven't received mine yet, it's in the mail). There's always a trade off for speed and resolution. I'd rather carry an extra battery than have a frustratingly slow processor.
I've had my TP for a week now and with a pretty heavy usage, my messenger is almost always on, some internet browsing and a little bit of monkey island on scummvm, my battery lasts 2 days. I can live with that.

Which Messenger are you using? I'm trying to find a good Google Talk client that won't drain my battery.
The battery should be expected to last a day. Past that, would be nice, but I do not feel it is necessary...
If the phone won't even last me a day (and "a day" for me is 14-16 hours at school and work) then it really isn't going to work for me. I hate trying to search for 5-10 minutes to have the phone plugged in during the middle of the day to try to extend the battery to make it just past that 12 hour mark for me.
The CDMA Touch Pro doesn't seem to do too well. Sitting idle, it had about 40% battery after 14 hours, but then dropped extremely quickly after that... I must have sent 10-12 texts and was in a call for about 10 minutes the entire day, no programs running in the background, only the cell radio turned on.

I agree with you 100% - except here is the problem: the vendor guarantees (well, doesn't "guarantee", but no vendor really "guarantees") a battery life that is absolutely not right.
On the Touch Pro, Sprint says the phone has a standby of 406 hours - that's 16 days! Incredibly misleading, and in my estimation definitely not accurate. That's the biggest problem I have with the whole battery issue.
Also, in comparison, my Mogul was suppose to have 340 hours of standby and 30% less talk time - but my Mogul lasted a LOT longer than this phone. I could talk, surf, play games, and have it still last longer than this phone. That doesn't make any sense.

Alright, alright, alright! Let's not mention the biggest and silliest gimmick PPC vendors made us believe in specially those of high-end CPU ones
I might have been worng in choosing "guarantee", but who says! When you read "Stand-by" I am sure that the vendor wouldn't in gods name mean "with any GSM/CDMA network"! I mean just think about't!! Why in heavens name would they shoot themselves in the foot by committing such a thing
I could defy anyone who would tell me that "Stand by" is a standard by itself! Haven't you read "The above are subject to network and phone usage" in phone specs?
In addition to the above, network signal strength matters and is very fundemental to extend/shorten battery life too!
Whether or not the battery was of 1300mAh or 1600mAh, it is all the CPU power management and I am pretty sure that Qualcomm is unlike the Intel XScale as the olden memories remind me of
Like most of you rightly said; change your habit and the battery life will change accordingly.
Just a last lil thought, why isn't there a quick options made available in the market for a higher amperage batteries? If one would care about the total gram units, then I recommend to live with the supplied battery.
Let's all cherish the memory of the HTC Universal, that baby was a hot long-lusty orgasmic son of gun device ever was.
I feel the term "standby time" has been used loosely, never in working with wireless phones have I found a machine that is capable of being on this long without being charged. Notice the "up to" that is always there on these kinds of stats too. What does up to mean? Probably something to do with turning off all the radios so the phone can't actually do anything, it might as well be off.
No matter what you do, computers require a lot of power to maintain themselves in any sort of "on" state. If there are any background processes happening (i.e. cellular radio sniffing for incoming calls and sms) you are really only burning power at a rate less than that of radios + screen.
Phones consume more power than phones did even a few years ago, hell they consume a lot more. Does anyone remember first-gen digital phones? 2 hours battery life, talk/standby, didn't make a difference. In fact the batteries used in mobile phones have changed (lion/nicad etc) probably a lot less than the manufacturers' ability to use less power to get the job done.
You can always strap on a bigger battery, but then you have a bigger phone, making it even HEAVIER!
Ultimately, as others have posted before me, that when you buy a touch pro, it is because you are looking for all the functionality that the machine entails. If you use all of the functions at the same time you are burning the candle at both ends. We buy a phone with a gps, bluetooth, wifi, 3g, vga screen qwerty, 3.2mp camera, etc because we need (or want) all of these features at the same time. When you are using the gps while having bluetooth on visible, screen full bright, wifi still on and music playing, don't be surprised your battery won't get you through the day.
I think that the general consensus here is that typically we should be able to get about 1 day out of the pro. Any more, we are lucky, any less, you either have a defective unit or you may have unrealistic expectations of the device.
That being said, after a few weeks go by and you find yourself actually being able to put the damn phone down for a while, battery life will seem longer too
My experience:
I've come from an XScale phone, which runs Linux and doesn't have 10% of what Pro does (like GPS, wifi, 3G, SDHC support, VGA screen, G sensor, light sensor, etc.) and even without all that it doesn't have a great battery life. I had to recharge it everyday sometimes, because I had pretty heavy use (especially A2DP audio).
With the Pro I can do that and much more and still get at least a full day of battery, which for me is good enough.
Tell me one device that has the same size does everything the Pro does with better battery life.
Unfortunately we are still to see better batteries, which I've read a lot about, especially that nanowire technology which supposedly makes them 10x better, but until then there isn't much we can do. So I don't think it's fair to blame a manufacturer, HTC or not, for poor battery life, because IMHO they did an impressive job on making such a small device with so much power, and still manage a full day of moderate use.
I find that TF3D is a real power hog too. Although I really like the interface, I am trying a run with SPB Mobile Shell instead
It is 3:30PM EST now, I unplugged the phone after a solid charge at 8PM, immediately changing to SPBMS.
It is now about 20 hours later and I have 63% remaining, that is a 37% discharge. I have been using the phone normally for the purpose of this experiment and normally the phone would be at about 30% remaining with tf3d.
There is a thread about this here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=441767
Hi All,
I'm wondering if besides the GPS, WiFi, 3G and Bluetooth.... the application processor, running at 528MHZ is not a cause for this poor battery life time?
Adrian
The reasons why we read many different opinions is that people use phones in very different ways. I can usually cope with the short battery life but sometimes it is really annoying. It just needs a few hours in a bad coverage area and the battery drains completely. Or an unexpected need for TomTom to make the battery go flat before I get back home in the evening. I used an HTC P3600 (which is a very similar phone from a featureset point of view) for two years and I never had to worry not to listen to music at the airport or on a plane because I wouldn't be able to use the phone after landing. Instead I have had this problem already twice with the Pro... this terrible battery life is really spoiling my user experience with this phone.

Well, as I said in my previous post, discounting the hardware keyboard and the fact that it wasn't a very attractive phone my old HTC P3600 used to do exactly the same things with a much longer battery life.

Tell me hows your battery life after root.

My phone has been charging awfully slow on the A/C Adapter. And it drain that battery on 3 hours. I'm still looking at what could've caused this.
Very good thus far. First charge was a little slow which I chalked up to conditioning.
Check Google Talk make sure you are not signed in. Open it, menu then settings and remove auto sign in. Then menu and sign out.
Make sure 4g isn't on
Make sure gps isn't on
Make sure bluetooth isn't on
Same with wifi unless you are using them. They are easy enough to turn on and off as needed.
Screen brightness to auto
Check facebook, twitter, weather etc.. refresh settings.
Check mail settings if not using IMAP. POP3 searching every 5 or 15 minutes in low signal areas can be a huge drain.
I also removed all the bloat crapware that I didn't want on anymore. I also used a program called "Startup Manager" to prevent all the other crap from loading all the time on reboot and randomly throughout the day.
The epic gets a little less signal than my EVO did. Although the EVO had 3 or 4 radio upgrades to get it where it is now but for now it is a little less which will use a little more power until we get a few updates.
I'm getting excellent life thus far.

When I got my phone, surprisingly it was almost drained. So I plugged it for about 3 hours and it completely charged. Now I put it on the AC Adapter and it was around 20% and when I look at the time 4 hours had passed by and still wasn't 100%. I would say it took 4 hours and 20 minutes. And I looked at the Battery used and it said 73% Display. The rest were like 5 things with 3 or 5%.
Thank You!
Yes.. Yes..! Please Do so tell..
I will make this short and sweet. I am arguing with my fiancee cause I just showed her two videos the Epic's camera and how they looks amazing. I saw a few videos taken today on the tube and this was to much to handle. I have an Evo and I compared and yes the Evo has more density due to the extra 3MP but the capture and sharpness of the Epic is amazing. The extra LED is great, a little brighter on Pictures. Not Much! The screen is a tad bit bigger, but horrid in the light, but who's outside like 24? Eh, I need everyone to convince me in.. So I have questions!
Dlna.. How has video Playback been?
Battery Life?
Smoothness, ADW Launcher Pro, Come on guys you know the drill..! I wanna know all the above!

I haven't messed with DLNA yet. Looks like you can stream from the PC and other media devices fairly easily with "All Share" but I haven't had a chance to mess with it. Basic codec support is still significantly better than the EVO. No need for rock player. Although the music player is different than the Touchwiz 3.0 devices which should be updated with Froyo.
My battery life has been equal to my Evo. Maybe a little better.
There is no comparison with smoothness or in Camera / video taking quality. The Epic beats the EVO hands down and this was the big reason my evo is on Ebay right now. Hands down the Epic wins.
Keyboard is very nice. Swype is also nice (had it on my evo as well).
Screen is much better and brighter. It seem to be easier to clean as well for whatever reason.
The downsides?
Nothing major that I can see. Developer support should be good since the Galaxy S has been released on every carrier. Porting to the Epic should be trivial once the keyboard files are isolated.
Regardless, the EVO needs to be rooted to even be a decent phone. The Epic far less so. I've removed some of the crap ware and stopped some of the auto starting apps and that is about it. Thus far the Epic has been very good. It does have a fair bit of crap preinstalled but its easy to remove.
I do find the Epic's screen, while better than the Evo, does seem a bit high in contrast. Its still much better in all regards IMO but I do notice it. We might be able to adjust this at some point.
The side power button is something to get used to, not a huge deal but odd.
Having the micro usb port up top is a mixed thing as well. Its a little farther from the power source if you are on the device talking to if your cord is short it could be an issue. Otherwise its easier to hold IMO without the cord and such getting in the way when resting in your hand while surfing.
I think JuiceDefender is killing my battery.. :S I used it Yesterday without Root and old apps and I could swear the phone lasted the whole day.

That's perfect, I still need to hear if it gives errors in the DLNA playback. From TV 2 PS3 whichever anyone can confirm. I know the Evo has codec issues when playing video from it. Just wanted to be sure this was not an issue in it there.
Otherwise the camera quality yes is amazing on the epic. I dint get it the Evo is 8mp, err? Anyways I am happy, I am going to exchange my Evo from what it looks like. I guess I have to get used to not having sense anymore. Thats about it.
More would be great if anyone cares to share to a fellow Evo pondered mind?

Well. I'm gonna find a way to remove root. Since I am 100% sure its draining my battery and fast. It's either that or Juice Defender (Plotter) I took it out of the charger at 5 am, left it on my bed and when I checked on it 55 minutes later it was 94%.
Battery life is exactly the same, all we did was root there are no ROMs to install which could impact battery in a positive or negative way so far. Again all we did was gain super user permissions root does not impact battery life whatsoever.
My battery life appears to drain slower now that I've rooted, that probably is because I have SetCPU underclocking my phone to 200mhz when the screen is off so it won't waste battery. Also if you are draining quickly you can look in Settings> About Phone> Battery Usage as to what is using the most battery. A good chance if you have f.e. Live Wallpapers on or something is that they will drain your battery. Also depending on what you have enabled for email syncing, etc. that may play a role. I keep my phone signed into Google Talk + Google Sync + TouchDown Exchange syncing all day and seem to have no issue at all. (I was at 60% after a full day's use yesterday, and that included some foray into the world of 4G in the area.

All of those settings are off. Email, Facebook, No LWP, no SetCPU. I really think its juice defender the culprit here. Cause it all happened when I restored my apps using Titanium Backup.
When you restored did you restore the apps plus data or the apps by themselves? When you add the data in that can lead to problems because the data was for another phone.

There isn't a backup in Titanium Backup of only apps. You can restore Apps with Data only.
Slow battery charging via USB after rooting? unplug the USB, go to settings and disable USB debugging. Plug the cable back in and select "Charging" from the pop-up.
problem solved.

i to have noticed significant drain after the one click root process... i have had my phone running for maby 4 hours off a full and with it in my pocket it can go dead.... doesnt happen all the time and i must say as well that the charging is extremely slow for me as well... hopefully there is a fix for this soon.. might have to do a restore and see if that helps.

Ummm... Yes you can. Open up Titanium Back up, press Menu -> Batch -> (Choose your restore function), then tap the radio button next to "App Only" instead of "App+Data". You can even just restore the data instead of the app!

My take as a new Thunderbolt owner

Look, this may not be a 28nm quad core phone with a 4.5" IPS 720p display, but we're getting there.
This is the best LTE phone still. Samsung has the AMOLED, but HTC gave this one the dual radio chipset and 4 antenna to give you the best reception, and since this phone is all about LTE, that's what makes it the best.
Battery life is the boon of LTE. You can get 3 hours of mobile hotspot if you're serious, but take today for example. Been at work for 4 hours with wifi on, and my battery still hasn't hit 80%.
Why is it I see everyone complain about the TB battery life?

Because its easy to drain. The phone has a smaller than average battery and the 4G tech is power hungry.
I've had the phone since release, and I'm always testing tweaks to improve the battery life. This phone is a beast, so it can tear through the stock battery, depending on your use. I only have experience with the TB on LTE though, so I'm not sure how it is for the Charge. I wouldn't trade the TB for anything else though.
been using the phone for about a week and battery life really depends on how its used. for example, on days im constantly texting and using apps, the battery lasts me only half a day. but yesterday i was heading into nyc and needed the phone to last me the whole day and once i limited my usage of it, it did last. the phone doesnt drain battery very fast unless its under intense usage.

The problem with that statement is we shouldn't be forced to limit our phone use to make it through a day. I am not advocating heavy usage...2 days worth of battery etc, but under normal daily conditions the battery should make it through a day...meaning a combination of all the general things done on a smartphone, and then kinda averaged out to make it thorugh 10 or 12 hours.
I know all the arguments about it all ways...all I am saying is a smartphone should make it through a normal day usage...almost as a standard.
I am still torn on the phone...but I have trouble making decisions for myself...so no suprise to me there...I like some of the features of the phone, but really am just blah on it. The power button is under sensitive, the volume buttons overly sensitive and IMO in the wrong spot...dislike the feel of it in my hand *(had it since Tuesday).
The only appealing factor to me is the fact that AOSP has made it (and HTC's recent annoucement regarding unlocked bootloaders...makes me want to buy into the cause....and is what is deterring me from other LTE phones (I dont know why I give it so much thought we won't have LTE here til sometime before December (hopefully)...I just was ready for an upgrade, figured why not get at least unlimited LTE til sometime in 2013 (at the least..)
I am leaning heavily on bring this back for the charge...or waiting til the bionic....though AOSP is a very important factor for me in choosing a phone
I haven't had my Thunderbolt for long, but I'm enjoying it so far. I've liked HTC phones since my days with WinMo, and the TB is an evolutionary, not revolutionary, step up from the Incredible that I replaced. Digging the larger screen and LTE is fast in my area (Pittsburgh). I think it has a better feel than the Incredible, too. I didn't mind the tiered back, but it felt mostly plasticky. The TB definitely seems to be made out of higher-quality materials.
Battery life is it's weakness, though, but it's not a deal breaker. I can go from the time I wake up until the time I go to bed with it, for the most part (although I was able to go 2 days on a charge with the Incredible). I don't think I'm a particularly heavy user, though... an hour of talking, maybe a dozen texts, an hour on the internet, and sporadic checking of my email or Twitter. I keep my brightness set to about 30%, GPS and Bluetooth are off, all vibration is off, Twitter and email are set to update manually. Weather updates every three hours, contacts whenever.
So far I really like my TB. Battery life isn't the greatest but there are people working on that.
We weren't supposed to get 4G until Dec also but it showed up a few days ago.

Is not the phone in TB pretty crappy? It least on mine I get a ton of static when talking on the phone, and the volume is often either too loud or too soft, as if the range for volume control is not wide enough. It feels like my old clamshell from 3 years ago sounded much better.

I wouldn't say it's crappy. I'm not getting static or anything on it. But it does sound a little tinnier than my Incredible did.

This is the primary reason I hate my TB. I use Exchange and Gmail push mail and I have done everything I could to reduce battery life, incl. limiting background data like weather, but my phone still only last 5 hours under normal usage. My old iPhone 4, with the same usage, will last another 3 hors at the minimum.

Wow, 5 hours? That's crazy.
I use my phone to stream music for about 1 - 3 hours a day, sync google calendar, contacts, and gmail, and weather widget and I can get about 20 hours. If I start playing games or make long phone calls, that definitely makes a difference. But I can easily get 20 hours with moderate usage.
Have you thought or rooting and running a different ROM/kernel? I'm running Tesla Coil with leankernel and I love it!
edit: I also leave wifi, bluetooth, and GPS on all day. Wifi is set to sleep after 15 minutes. I'm also in a 4G area.
Well... that is the problem. I'm trying to use my TB professionally. I use it to join conf calls, always with my bluetooth headset, check and reply company emails, etc.
It just doesn't cut it. I always have to recharge it mid day. I never had to do the same with my BlackBerry Curve or Tmobile G2, specially the G2.
Problem is not always I have the option to recharge. And just the fact that I have to pay attention and monitor battery level is not good.
I need a phone that I can use A LOT for email (a lot!!!) and calls, several calls per day, with bluetooth. The TB is not this phone.
I've had mine sine thursday and the battery sucks. It reminds me of the original droid which I ultimately had to buy the Seido extended battery for to get the use I wanted out of it.
If you leave it in 3g it will go all day. On Friday my wife and I went looking at houses (we're shopping to buy) using my wifi xoom to do research while accessing data through the mobile hotspot. We drove around for about 4 hours and the TBolt still had 50%charge when I got home and I still had power when I put it on charge at bedtime. This was on 3g though.
Yesterday we did the same thing but I left 4G on. We drove off at about 2:00PM with a 90% charge on the phone. By 3:15 it was down to 39%. That's ridiculous, and the phone was crazy hot too.

Maybe, but it appears to have a pretty good signal. I haven't been watching that cloely but when I have looked it hasn't had below two bars. They claim the whole city is well covered and quite a bit of the countryside around it. Jacksonville Fl. may not have the *most* in population but it is the *biggest* city in the state.
The TB is Verizon's first CDMA+LTE phone & has its shortcomings, just like any other 1st-gen technology. The battery is only 1400mah, so don't expect it to last as long as 3G-only phones with similar battery size. You can extend battery life by disabling nonessential apps/services & turning off 4G when you don't need it. You can also flash a custom rom & battery sipping kernel, but a lot of ppl are not willing to go that far, especially with the recent bricking issues. The best way to ensure you have enough juice w/o recharging is to buy an extra battery & charger. You can get both from ebay for less than $20. Then you won't have to gimp your TB just to make it through the day

I said the phone on t-bolt was crappy. People who said the word crappy was inappropriate were correct, thanks for that, it is not crappy. But, coming off at&t iPhone I immediately noticed that t-bolt did not sound as good, and this he first time ever I noticed a difference in call sound when switching phones, so got a bit upsetting I guess. By now I am used to it and sounds ok to me.

When you realize that this phone is more powerful than the computer I took to college and it's running on a battery the size of a saltine cracker, it's only logical that it won't last all day if you're using it nonstop.
Older phones seemed to last forever because all it did was make calls and the occasional text. I had the original enV and if I sat around using AIM and playing what few games were available the battery drained like my bank account at a strip club. Android phones? Fugeddaboutit. We're talking, texting, streaming, listening, WiFi hotspotting, playing, and recording all day long and DON'T think we'll need a power boost? Puh-lease.
Buy a spare battery, keep a charger handy, or just use it more conservatively.

Coming from G2X-my impressions of the Sensation 4g

I figure there's some folks on the fence about whether they should get rid of their g2x for the Sensation, or some who have to make the choice between the two.
I owned the G2X from launch day until this week. I've had the Sensation for 24 hours.
I have to admit up front I'm biased in terms of design- I prefer the look and feel of the Sensation over the G2X, no matter the performance of the two.
Initial impressions:
-Look and feel-To me, the Sensation wins this hands down, which is really saying something, because the G2X felt great in hand also. But the shape and design of the HTC is something I dig a bit more than the iphonish slab.
You may prefer the g2x as this is simply preference.
-Screen: call it a slight HTC advantage. The sensation has a higher resolution, which is obvious immediately, and has a slightly bigger screen, but lacks some of the eye popping color of the G2X.
-Speed: The G2X is a bit snappier, but I have yet to miss that extra snap because the rest of the experience is so good. Don't misunderstand, the HTC is also plenty fast, but I have been able to slow it down on occasion.
-call quality/sound quality: about the same in terms of calls, but the sounds (ringers and notifications, speaker phone) are all lower on the sensation, unless I'm missing a setting)
-htc sense/almost vanilla g2x: I prefer vanilla, but htc sense has surprised me..it's laid out really well. In the end, I rooted the g2x, and I'll root the sensation, so I'm not too concerned. If you're not the rooting type, the G2X is for you (though it's so easy to root the hell out of you might as well dive in)
-Battery life: This is the biggie for me. I immediately noticed how much better the HTC is compared to the g2x. Last night, I got 7 hours from the Sensation, and the screen was on full brightness (screen on time-5 hours, 55 minutes), wifi and wifi calling were on and so was facebook, gmail and email syncing. I was trying out everything for those 7 hours, too. Today, having unplugged at 5am, I'm now at 65% 11.5 hours later. This is with minimal use for 8 hours, and moderate to heavy use for the past 2 or so. The G2X either has the worst battery, or the worst battery drivers, and either way, I don't care anymore. I would lose 8% per hour while it sat in my pocket with the screen off. The Sensation lost about 1.5% per hour while the screen's off, today anyway.
Now, if both phones lose the same amount when in use heavily, the Sensation still wins by a wide margin as the idling % makes up for it. Simply put: it saves the juice when you're not using it.
-Bugs: G2x has seemingly 50 crippling bugs, but the most glaring is obviously the battery issues. There are reboots, freezes, factory resets and batteries that just turn off when charging because they're so hot. I'm talking hot to the touch. The LG dbag I spoke to in the tmobile store was awfully smug about these issues, another reason I was looking to jump ship.
Also wifi and data issues were pretty prevalent until I flashed a rom.
The HTC: pending, but nothing as dumbfounding as the mess I dealt with, with the LG. I tried the death grip and checked my screen for dust, and all the popular complaints, but haven't noticed anything yet.
Verdict: The Sensation feels like a Nexus One in hand, has a small led notification, gets much better battery life so far, and just feels more polished, inside and out. The LG is a hot rod with no restrictions, but horrible gas mileage and a slight pinging sound in the engine. If the Sensation were rooted right now, this would make the call way too easy-Sensation hands down. Since it's not currently, I say go with the Sensation if you don't own either one yet. If you own the G2X, I might wait for the update and see how it responds. If you're like me, a Nexus One freak, and you don't mind waiting for HTC to unlock the bootloader (or one of the brilliant minds here!), then the Sensation wins.
Hope this overview helps some people.
I honestly don't get the battery issues that people are having with the G2x. The rest of the issues.. most certainly. I am on my third due to the rest of the issues, but battery... yeah, no. It lasted 17.5 hours yesterday with 3 hours 45 min of actual screen on time + a few calls. And that was with WiFi on continuously but only having connection for 8 of those hours. I have a hard time finding issue with that. There IS a bug in the wifi calling which will eat your battery, but a simple check with "wheres my droid power" will show you that and let you kill the process.
All three of my phones have had issues (the second just loved to reboot randomly and repeatedly and once even factory reset itself) but battery has never even been close to being an issue.
I DO run Juice defender (the free version). If thats of importance. I am currently at 94% at 4 hours 39min since unplugged. GPS and WIFI on, no wifi signal.
Edit cause I had typos! lol.
i just returned my g2x from lots of issues from batt. to wifi calling issues, then to finalize it suck on LG logo, so i returned it and got a mytouch 4g whic right off the get go it aint no dual core but the 2nd gen snap dragon is good and not loosing bars every minute went from 1-3,4 all the time (g2x) so have to love htc phones
i will see if how this phone treats me maybe jump in there next wk and get the sensation..
I loved my MT4G too. I REALLY wish I had skipped the G2x. I have such fingers crossed for the Sensation.

Same here, my MT4G ran smooth, great signal strength, wifi, battery life was good...etc. This nightmare I dropped the MT4G to get is making life miserable. I'm on my 3rd G2x and all the same problems with each, just in differing degrees. Wow, I did not know that. Pimp my cpu is just begging to be used in my app tray.
I am totally biased towards HTC I have loved everyone of their android devices!!! The g2x simply sucks period! the screen was nice and that's about it! I am debating whether or not to sell my g2x or just keep it in the top drawer dungeon with my other forgotten cell phones. After 24 hours of playing with my sensation I absolutely love it. I am using adw launcher and for the most part htc sense isn't getting in my way. I love the lockscreen and the ability to instantly start my favorite 4 apps without technically unlocking the phone. I know that after my first 24hrs with my g2x I had already popped my sim card back in my mt4g...... so if you are on the fence about which to purchase GET A SENSATION!!!!
Well I've played with the sensation. I liked it. Was noticeably slower.
But felt great.
I'll be waiting for Nov to mar when the quad core chips release.
I just didn't find it justifiable to switch.
But it is a nice phone.
So is my g2x.
No problems.

This is my 1st HTC phone and I really like it. The battery is much better than the G2X. I was concerned about not liking Sense, however, I have been pleasantly surprised. IMO, this is a much better quality/build of a phone than the G2X. It will be even better once it's rooted.
I picked up a Sensation today and it is sitting next to my G2x. So far I have observed the following:
Sensation--Device got very hot immediately after powering it on. It has continued to stay at 101 to 111 degrees if used at all. If it idles it only drops to 96 degrees.
Touchscreen becomes unresponsive at times and a noticeable lag appears while trying to load apps. After charging to full capacity it has dropped 17% in 15 minutes of very limited use. The screen is very nice and it is a very attractive phone. I am not a fan of Sense (although this version is much better than the previous ones) Speaker phone volume is relatively weak (in my opinion) The build is great, although I have found a sort of dent in the upper area of the battery cover. The GPS is one of the best I have ever tried. All in all a very very good phone. The heating issues which started immediately and the touchscreen's lack of responsiveness make it hard for me to consider keeping this phone. I could probably just send it back and get a replacement but I do not want to get on that merry go round again. Unless the over heating ceases or gets better and the touch screen responds on all areas of the screen, it will go back and I will be staying with the G2X. Make no mistake though the Sensation is a GREAT phone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I charged my sensation fully before I ever powered it on and I have not experienced any over heating issues. I absolutely hate the g2x lol

For those who want to switch to TB

Think again! I own TB since March and the battery is the worst thing i eva seen. Pls spare me all the tips abt charging the phone, i have tried themall. If i turn on lte, the phone will not last me more than 5 hours and it was not even heavy use. Please keep this in mind if u want to switch.
My gf has a charge I have a thunderbolt. Running a good Rom and kernel pretty much takes care if battery issues for me. I get about 2 hours more than hers with about the same usage. If you compare both using stock roms than yes the charge will last longer though.

Is she rooted and running a custom ROM as well, or are you comparing custom ROM to stock?
I'm giving up with running custom ROMs. Been there, done that. I just need a phone that works. Wait...there isn't one but really I just need a decent phone. I feel like I'm going down that road again using Android...ya know that Linux tinkering when Slackware was installing from floppies and the ego "I could do whatever I want" with it. Maybe I need to switch to the dark side for a break
If I switch to 3G on TB, I will have about 30% left by the end of the day. If I give the phone to my son so he could play a litto game or watch litto utube, I better have somewhere to charge the phone right away. It also depends on where you're at as far as LTE coverage goes. I think I have decent coverage (12mb/s dl; 2-3mb/s upload)
I'm confident that Samsung will release new firmware to address some of the issues. Don't think switching to a different phone, you won't have issue(s). For TB, I will seriously think twice as the known battery issue.

I'm comparing my modded phone to her stock. I know its an unfair fight but just sayin.

OP sounds like he needs to buy an iphone or a crackberry. Great battery life, no tinkering required.
I currently have active TB, Charge, Nexus S, iPhone 4.
Battery life - iP4 the best, then NS, then a total tossup on the TB/Charge.
Form Factor - NS the best, TB, Charge, iP4.
Screen/Display - Charge best, iP4, NS, TB horrible.
Call quality/coverage - VZW is great at both, AT&T is decent coverage, but call quality not top notch, T-Mobile terrible coverage, decent call quality.
The TB has a wonderful advantage, for my usage habits, over all the other VZW offerings in that it has the simultaneous voice/data over 3G. No other phone on VZW can do that yet.
A friend saw I had both phones on my desk yesterday; she asked about both since she wants a new one. She assumed the Charge was my favorite for some reason, but when she flat out asked I told her all things considered, the TB had a slight edge over the Charge.
I'd recommend either phone, but I'd also say they both must be rooted and tweaked to be of much use. The TB battery is much better on BAMF, but it still sucks, than stock, and the Charge is a laggy piece of cow dung if you leave it stock RFS file system.
I had the thunderbolt since launch day - and the one really, and only "killer" is svdo over 3g. Battery life killed me, as did the shoddy build quality (3 cln replacements in 3 weeks). The screen also was far far far too washed out in direct sunlight (didnt really noticed until summer, dang those grey New England days!). I ended up having VzW executive customer service swap my Bot for a new Charge - whilst my Thunderbolt would burn 15% mostly standby to 20% using the device on LTE or about 8-10% over 3g. I'm still a slave to wifi at home with the Charge, but at least the screen is usable outdoors and I can make it approximately 10 hours on 4g/18 forced to 3g/24+ on wifi. The LTE radio in all of these phones are the killers.
With that said, LTE speed overall really isnt needed, at least until video chat (or 2.3.4) is available and stable. I do really miss svdo over 3g from the bolt, thankfully Boston metro is blanketed in 4g, but I'm finding the Charge quite possibly the best overall 4G device on VzW especially after the debloat and voodoo mods.
OOB though with no modifications? Thunderbolt. If you can deal with the absolutely terrible battery life (on 4g) and are never out in the sun and need to see your display.
But the Charge's screen is superb, the phone is more comfortable to hold for an extended period of time, and battery life is head and shoulders better. I'm just scared that 2.3.4 will not make it on time, due to Samsung's terrible track record with updates and Skype with video will stall for Android on a whole.
Edit - I also absolutely hate TouchWiz. LauncherPro saved the day in that regard as well.
I had 1% battery drain overnight while the phone idled for 6 hours. I turned mobile data off at the time. 1%.
Right now the battery is at 75% and has been off of the charger for 12 hours and 17 minutes. The phone has been on constant 4G from ~6:45am until now, 12:41pm.
I love my battery life

Neither are front facing cameras, 8MP cameras, Super AMOLED+ displays, etc.
They're just nice to have.

Who said they weren't?
I just switched from a stock rooted TB to a Charge. My thoughts:
-Like everyone else, TB battery life was dismal in 4G areas. Even with the extended battery it was very poor.
-Screen on TB is *very* hard to see outside.
-TB pretty freaking heavy.
-HTC's Sense UI is a lot prettier than Samsung's UI.

How are you getting this kind of battery life. I'm running Gummycharged 1.7.5 with the PBJ OTC kernal (not overclocked though), and I lose 20% over eight hours while I'm sleeping.

I'm guessing he puts his phone in airplane mode.

As I said in the kernel thread, if you are going to stick with stock clock speeds, you will get better battery life on the non-OC version of my kernel.
I'm normally in a decent to strong 4G area, and I really don't see a huge difference in battery life between the TB and DC, but this week I've been working in a location that's 3G only, and in a building where the coverage is weak for data.
In this circumstance, the battery life between my Droid and my Thunderbolt is very dramatic. Whether it's just physically a better radio, or a better software for it, the Charge's battery life is amazing compared to the Thunderbolt's. This morning, after not even three hours, my Charge still had 90% battery life, my Thunderbolt was down to 48%. Neither phone had been used for anything; they were both just idle on my desk. Amazing.
The Charge clearly handles weak signals better than the TB in this area (Santa Clarita, CA - near Magic Mountain just north of Los Angeles).
