Server requires unsupported security features - Android Software/Hacking General [Developers Only]

Hi,
I have a xperia play............
Was hoping the 2.3.3 release would have fixed these issues, alas no.
Are there enlightened people out there that know a way for the stock email and calendar apps to sync with exchange servers that insist on password certificates. I work for a blue chip company and these type of certificates are common place.
Basically our exchange servers only will allow sync if I place a secure password on my device i.e. 9 letters long with symbols and numbers. After 9 failed attempts it wil delete all the mails and contacts on the phone. fair enough.
The messge states "Set up could not finish.... Server requires unsupported security features"
Why in the modern world does android not allow this? My IPhone 3gs / Iphone 4 had no issues accepting, neither do Windows based phones.
The only work around is Moxier mail which kills my phones battery within hours.
Please, is there any way around this problem?
Thanks in advance
Neil

I have this same problem!!
Is there a solution to this?

Change HTC Exchange Integration Device Type

Anyone know where the Device Type is kept for HTC's Exchange stuff?
Currently it sends my device over to the Active Exchange network as "HTCHero" I'd prefer if it did not do this. I'd like it to present itself as a more secure device like... 'iPhone'
Right now I'm using TouchDown Pro and it will do this for me... and for the most part I like touchdown except that it's horribly ugly. I'd like the ability to use the phone's exchange integration again if I felt like going back.
Not sure if your Hero is rooted yet, but if it is, someone could probably baksmali/smali the .apk and change the activesync device string it returns.
I can't get mine to even link up with my gmail account.
You know what you are suppose to put when it asks you for the domain and server info?
With out starting a new thread here, and on the topic of exchage. Does anyone know how to remove an email from the device and not the server?? My blackberry gave me the option. Maybe a "Download a Copy" setting?
I have this posted in 3 other forums and no one is responding.

Exchange email - lookup contacts from corporate address book?

Is it possible to look up contacts from the GAL with the email client?

Maybe this thread could be about all Exchange issues / tips ?
Would be cool.
I don't have answers to the OP here just some points:
1. I read either on here or another forum that your customized folders in Exchange did not show up on Captivate. Can anyone deny / confirm?
2. I don't see why contact GAL lookup won't work, it worked on my Aria. But then again also my Exchange customized folders showed up just fine on Aria.
3. Dialing from Calendar entry on Captivate no worky? Really? Sounds unlikely but can anyone confirm / deny?
You are able to do lookups within the email client on the gal. Simply press the search button, this will take you to a lookup field.
My folders all synced with my exchange account. Its more like a fake sync.it pulls when selected.
I have not been able to lookup phonenumbers through the gal.

The default email client leaves a lot to be desired when dealing with Exchange support. Yes, you can have customized folder but navigate them isn't that easy. For example, I have more than a dozen folders under my inbox folder, they all showed up as tabs along side the Inbox. There is no way to configure which folder to sync and which doesn't.
The calendar also showed my meetings wrong. I have a few repeating events with a few exceptions, e.g. I delete a few meetings in certain weeks. After sync, the calendar on my phone ignores all those exceptions/deleted meetings.
I'm going to investigate other Exchange support apps. The stock app really stinks.

Customized folders do show up, along the top bar of the main email client window. Swipe or tap to change folders.

Compose or reply to an email. Below the TO and CC fields are four buttons. One is SEARCH. That does a GAL lookup.

Works just fine for me.

Some other tips.
Make messages easier to read and MUCH easier on the battery by going to Menu/Display Mode and picking "Positive Mode". Wish Gmail would do this too, white background is not AMOLED friendly at all (uses MORE power than an LCD would use).
Check your signature...you may or may not want to advertise you're "using an i897 on AT&T 3G Network". Account Settings/Signature.
Check message size, it's probably set too low by default, unless you're really trying to conserve a few kb of data. Advanced Settings/Email Size.
What format are your telephone numbers in your calendar?
888 123-4567
8881234567
Don't work for me. They are in the body of the calendar entry.

I have not been able to lookup people by phone number (useful when you get a call from your office that you don't recognize the number) since I got rid of the first gen blackberry I had many years ago.
And that's including a year that I had the tilt (A Windows phone you'd think they could make their own stuff work together.) And I still can't with the Aria I have now (until next week Wed. when my Captivate arrives, and then I won't be able to with my Captivate. )
Sad that Exchange integration was better with the blackberry 6 years ago than it is with today's latest Android devices.
sadly the gal search only provides me the email address, not the phone number or any other gal information. Or does it for you? Am I doing it wrong?
It must be that somebody at Android and or Samsung owns stock in Touchdown / Nitro ???
It's probably due to the limitation of Exchange ActiveSync protocol.
P.S. dialing from calendar doesn't work for me either when the phone number is in event body.

The GAL lookup fubar is not the EAS protocol. It works on other platforms just fine. I think it is a Samsung issue - i will test later on my Moto phone and see what they return in a GAL lookup.
As for calendar dialing - I want to see some proof of someone doing this with an Exchange entry. I have tried new entries in Exchange and Google with a phone number in body and location - nothing works. URLs don't work either.
The entire calendar entry is treated as an unelectable blob.

I don't remember if it works in WM or not (never tried even though I've been using WM exclusively in the past). But according to posts above by bwolmarans, it didn't work for his Tilt either. Remember BlackBerry doesn't use EAS at all. You need to setup BES server in order to communicate between Exchanger server and BB.

It works fine on iPhone - they licensed EAS, and I am pretty sure it worked on my WinMo phone. I have another Android 2.1 phone I want to try it on.
As further information, I could not get my GAL to work in the stock email client. After reading another forum thread, I installed "Swift Contacts" from the market. This unlocked the GAL functionality in the stock client as well.

HTC support's response to Froyo & Exchange ActiveSync "Sync protocol error"

HTC support's response to Froyo & Exchange ActiveSync "Sync protocol error"
So after moving from HTC Hero to Desire Z, I started getting "Sync Protocol Error" after the initial sync with Exchange 2010.
Many threads on this site and on many others sites exist about this issue, a lot of them having a workaround in the shape of removing and re-adding the account, but absolutely nothing worked for me. until I ran into this one and gave it a try:
- I can't posts links..."
I implemented this solution successfully and I now have ActiveSync work perfectly on my device. so wanted this thread to stand out from the dozens of threads on many forums so people can find the solution to this very annoying problem easily.
This is the solution from the original poster and all credit goes to him:
"Have your Exchange admin use the Microsoft mobile admin tool to delete the partnership for the device. Once done, the next sync will succeed."
When trying to implement this solution on Exchange 2010, we found that the "Mobile Admin Tool" is already built into the Exchange Management Console, and these are the steps that you need to take in order to remove the partnership on 2010:
1. Open Exchange Management Console
2. Go to Recepient configuration
3. Right click on user and choose "Manage Mobile Phone"
4. At this stage my username had 3 different phones which Exchange identifies according to User Agent. the Desire Z was named HTC Vision.
5. We removed all the phones by choosing "Remove Mobile Phone Partnership" and choosing finish. you have to repeat this step for all phones because the dialog box actually closes without letting you delete all partnerships.
I'm not a big Exchange expert, but if you have a version prior to 2010 running on your Exchange server you might need to use "Microsoft Exchange Server ActiveSync Web Administration Tool":
- I can't post links..."
Anyway doesn't matter which version or tool you are using, removing the partnership is the golden solution.
No problems with syncing after that is done. many thanks to tscalzott from the HTC forums.
Oh cr*p... again this worked for a couple of days and stopped working.
I'm attacking this problem both with HTC email support and phone support.
Email support, after a few useless tips (factory reset etc') sent me the following:
"With regards to your inquiry,
Kindly note that this issue is escalated to a higher level to be investigated and we will be replying to you shortly the moment we get the update."
I have a feeling that I will not hear from them in the upcoming weeks or ever.
With phone support, they actually told me that I need to download the certificate from the OWA site and install it on the phone. they said they will send me instructions via email on the installation part because the support personnel probably had no idea how to do that. I also tried without any luck - I could find some tips on how to install WPA certificates but not the CET certificate that you can download from Exchange OWA.
After first call - didn't receive any email.
Called again asking for them to resend the email - still didn't receive anything.
Just got off the phone from the third call - the support agent made some more checks and said that there was probably a mistake with the first agent I talked to - as there is no need to install a certificate on the phone in order to work with Exchange ActiveSync on the phone.
He did however said, much like the email I got, that this issue is being escalated internally and at some point in time, information about a solution will be posted online at the HTC site.
If any of the many people having this problems are seeing this thread, please go ahead and send your case at h t t p : / / w w w . h t c .com/uk/CS_Mail.aspx or any other country in hopes that they will understand that there's a serious issue going on as they receive more complaints. I tried telling him to try and escalate the fact that although many people are not calling in (simply given up or using touchdown application instead), the escalation point should definitely just google the problem and see how many users are suffering from it. I do however understand that HTC's policy might be to only handle issues that are being reported to them, and not issues that are discussed on the web as they have no control over those users' actions.
Now we wait hoping for the best...
Any progress on this? I have a HD2 with the Desire Z NAND build on it. Love it for everythinggggg except that my exchange account doesnt sync calendar :'(

[Q] Is There An App For Pushing Global Contacts OTA?

Hello All,
I am relatively new to the Android Scene but I have been messing with my Epic, rooting it, running custom ROMs, and absolutely loving it! So I have decided that I want to move our entire company over to Android phones from WM6 phones.
One thing that I am looking for that I was never able to find for our WM devices was a way to pull a Company Phone Book out to our phones Automatically OTA.
We have about 140 lines on our cell phone pool currently, and when we have a new person start, we send out an email telling everyone that a new person has started and to add their number to their contact list manually. Most people just ignore the email and never do it, so they never actually get the new contact on their phone. So I am looking for a way to automate the process for our people.
We currently have a Public Folder on our Exchange Server that is called "Company Cell Phone List" that holds the contacts for all of our phones with the Employee Name/Number/Picture.
When a new employee starts, I create a new account on the Exchange Server, and log into that users account in Outlook, and Copy/Paste the contacts from the Public folder to their "Contacts" folder and sync the phones OTA with the Exchange Server and move the contacts that way initally.
I know with BlackBerry you can push address lists to the phones through a BES. With WM I never could find a solution, and with Android I am hoping there might be something that I can use to accomplish this.
Is there an App out there that can actually sync this information to the phones automatically instead of having the end users add the contacts manually, or me having to log into 140 outlook accounts and add a new number to their "Contacts" folder each time someone new starts?
Any help would be greatly apperciated. And thanks for letting me be long winded ;-)
HTC seams to support this with their sense cusomized mail app
Is there somewhere that you saw that posted? I am looking at going to Droid 2 Phones wth Verizon so trying to find something that will work on that Froyo platform.
Sent from my Epic 4G using XDA App
you should be able to set up a company google account for this. have all the work phones sync to the contacts backed up on google's server and it'll pull them automatically as changes are made. you can also edit the contact list manually on their site somewhere. not the most secure / professional but it's the simplest method I know of.
Yeah I thought of that method too. At that point I could just set up a common Exchange account and have all of the phones pull from that account and we would have a little more control over it.
I just don't want people sending E-Mail's out of any account other than their specified Exchange Mailbox. So putting a second E-Mail account that has anything with our Company Name associated with it is kind of risky being that there is not much accountability if someone is to send out a non work appropriate E-Mail.
Just too risky to me.
So if there is something Server Side we can do I would do it, else if there actually was an App that could tunnel down to those public shares OTA would be the best.
But again, a common account is a good idea in theory, just worried that someone would send something from the account and cause me all kinds of headaches

[Q] Stock Email App not working with Exchange Server Corporate Email

Dear all,
After several weeks of exchanging e-mails with IT department and in-depth search over Web, I turn to experts here. I have Galaxy Note 10.1 Stock ROM with Android 4.1. installed, without any after market SW customization.
I am trying to sync my corporate Exchange email account (Exchange version 2010) but after complete procedure adding new account, the stock email app from Samsung is stacked on sync screen syncing without any progress. From web sites and forums, this is common trouble with not only this device, but I've tried endless possibilities to solve this problem. From factory reset with clean device, without any other accounts, with Mobile data sync on and off, Security levels with encryption, pin, password, screen pattern, without any security, with many 3rd party EAS Android apps, but on the end, I am stuck with non working sync. If I try with wrong password, there is message for error with credentials, so there is somehow the connection between device and server, but without working sync and any email coming to my Samsung Note.
On the other hand, the part from my company's IT settings, everything should be OK, since I am using my smartphone LG Optimus 2x with Android v 4.0 and stock email app. It works without any problems from beginning with same settings from my side and at Exchange Server Side. During my testing, no security settings, levels or any other settings had been changed.
From analysis in past weeks there is one possible solution. On my working LG phone, stock email app is added to Device administrators list after I add my Exchange account and on the end of procedure there is also a well known pop-up asking me for permissions for remote wipe for different kind of data. When I add my Exchange account to my Samsung Note, there is no sight of this pop-up for allowing remote wipe and also after this procedure, Samsung note's stock email app is not added to Android device administrator's list (Settings-security-device administrator). And I cannot find any way to manually add this app to device admin list.
So, from this description, do anyone have some clue what to do?
can't help you with the stock mail client, but I found that one lacking lots of features anyway, plus I didnt want to hand over complete control of my devices to some admin anyway. So I can only recommend Touchdown, costs money but worth every cent (or penny )
