Xperia play or droid incredible 2? - General Questions and Answers

I am torn between these two, and I have no idea which to pick. I do see the Play only has a VGA FFC, and the Droid Inc 2 has a 1.3Mp FFC, which I would like to know, would you really see a difference in video quality between the two?? That is a big thing for me.
Please help!
Thanks.

If you're looking for a device to play games and emulators with, the Play all the way.

The Droid Incredible 2 has the better camera for video chat and whatever else you would use a front facing cam for. I would only go with the Xperia Play if you're a big gamer but if not I would stick with HTC Droid Incredible 2...even if neither have 4G support

You dont seem to care about 4g data?
4g is needed for smooth video chat!
Unless your on wifi.
THUNDERBOLT

Here are the facts: The Play is the ONLY phone (at least, the only recent phone from a well-known manufacturer) that features a gamepad. IF you want to play games on your phone, the Play is the only way to go. Yes, it does not have the best camera and SE kind of jips you on the internal memory, but if you want a gaming device, the Play is your only serious option. Even though I bricked mine the other day (note, if you are going to unlock the bootloader on the Play, DO NOT upgrade the firmware-- you will brick your phone. Even after unbricking, your phone's radio will not work and you will not be able to make calls), I can say that up until the bricking happened, the phone was great. My only complaint was that I had to be somewhat selective about the apps I had on my phone to avoid wasting memory.
Now, if you want a phone that probably does everything really well except play games, stick to the Droid.

Should my dad go for N8?

Hey guys, my dad is looking for a new phone. He currently has a 3 year old HTC Herald(A beaten up, broken touch screen, piece of ****) and seriously wants to have a replacement. He loves photography(Always tries to learn new things about his DSLR and improves his photography) so wants a phone that has a good camera. He wants a nice capacitive touch screen with e-mail(G-mail push) and facebook integration and GPS(With maps as well as map tracking) and perhaps some decent time-killer games. Nokia N8 costs about 22-24k INR here and sounds perfect for his needs, his other opinion was Dell Streak but it is about 34k INR plus its future of having gingerbread seems weak. Desire HD/Z are not available here plus they might be quite expensive when they make it here. I got a Desire and he doesn't want to have the same phone(Not that he found it to be bad, but he doesn't want to copy anyone. Plus camera on Desire is something he doesn't like(Not that I do)).
What do you think?
This is a matter of preference and I cant say much about the actual phone BUT after using android symbian just doesn't cut it anymore. But again this is only my opinion.
Agree with Daml...if you want to have also a GPS and maps, what is better than Android? I would stick with google OS instead of Symbian...
My GF has the N97 mini & was looking at N8 as hates the N97s Horrid UI, unfortunatly N8 is not a lot better.
Trying to move her to Android as far better OS than Nokia's bodged efforts at making Symbian touch friendly.
WM5 was better than OS on her N97 mini.
the n8 is a brick.
i played with thae phone. Symbian is wack in my opinion.
Well what would you guys suggest?
My wife has the N8. She likes it. It seems like a solid phone and hasn't given her any problems. Battery life is average, nowhere near her old phone, E71. She chose the N8 because of the ease of migration and the familiarity and she wanted a great camera. I forget where I read it, but the tagline was Nokia made a great camera with cell phone capabilities. It seems to be true. The Ovi Store and Ovi Maps are pretty good.
I can't directly compare with Android though. I prefer winmo and only boot to android for specific tasks or some game play.
Found migration using the Nokia transfer a long way from perfect.
The camera & build are only plus points, OS is simply a pathetic effort for aimed market & price.
Don't ask people on XDA about a Nokia device. You will only get troll and false answers. The only minus about the N8 is the application selection. Buy one to open the eyes of developers.
Seems like this post has been here for almost 2 weeks now so not sure if u have bought ur dad his phone yet.
However, i would disagree with the comments of people above me.
1) What is so bad about symbian^3? i agree that symbian1 sucked due to the inconsistent one and two touch to enter thing but symbian 3 has no such problems at all.
2) n8 offers alot more than just a 12Mp camera! It records in 720p HD, has active noice cancellation.
3) What other phones has a HDMI output? after taking pictures u can even just hook the phone up to a tv
4) I agree that there arent that many games yet, but it already has more than 10 HD games already so far and it's only been about 2 months. EA games are even backing the n8 symbian 3 by creating HD games for them!
hmm what else, i guess it does sell itself with the casing etc. I blive the top andriod atm is samsung galaxy s? The screen is nice indeed, but it has no flash and only 5mp camera, so night pictures are totally out of the picture. but yea try it before buying it! It's a really good phone i reckon, love the GPS on it too. oh and also not to mention the photo editing software that it comes with!

oh and btw, i migrated from my n86 to n8 without any problems. All my stuff got transfered over perfectly!
Yeh files migrated after afew attempts but sms dates are changed to date of the transfer which is a bit pathetic.
Had an issue with Thai font turning to squares after transfer, not good as both Nokia devices are Asian market & support Asian fonts so the transfer software appears to have an issue with this !
More customization of transfer options would be good too.
For price & Nokias long running in mobile market I would expect a lot more, the OS is about 3 years behind the compition ! My old WM2003se HTC Magician with Resco Photo Viewer makes an N97 mini photo viewer look completely pathetic, put it next to an iphone or WM6.5.3 OS & it looks like a 1st year students software project.
I'm not a nokia/symbian fan BUT, according with your dad's purposes, i think the N8 sounds exactly like the phone you're looking for.

will the uma app below work on the NOKIA N8 does any one know .I am thinking of buying one ..thanks
"T-Mobile Wi-Fi calling app has finally been hacked to work on Google Nexus One. If you are a Nexus One owner on T-Mobile, then you can install this hacked app and make Wi-Fi calls without any pertinent issues. However the installation instructions of this hack are still a bit of a task for novices, as it requires you to flash kernels and libraries before planting the APK file. "

I have both a premium android device (mytouch 4g with froyo) and N8. Although it comes down to individual preference, I prefer the android device. The UI is much more user friendly and smooth, theres actually a portrait qwerty keyboard available. The widgets are also much more customisable and easier to use. Additionally, the apps make the android device much more favourable. As a medical student, I find a plethora of medical apps available on Android (almost as many as the Iphone), and even otherwise there are a lot more apps available to make it feel like a true smartphone. It's also the little things that matter, such as the fact that the Android phone automatically syncs your contacts with facebook and twitter profiles of your friends, whereas the N8 does not appear to have this capability.
Admittedly the N8 feels like a lot more sturdy device (has gorilla glass and aluminised body), but I got it largely because of the availability of Ovi Maps (although I like Google Maps, I don't like the idea of needing a data connection everytime I go outside and need it). One other thing is that the N8 is a pentaband 3g device, meaning it would work on 3g networks in virtually every country and with every provider, although to my knowledge there is no such android device. This would be esp useful if you travel a lot (like me). This is something I personally think the people at Nokia should have actually bothered to mention when marketing the device. I mainly keep the N8 to listen to music, and for when I go overseas, but it is not my main device.
Overall, I'd definitely say go with the android device (esp. as the mytouch 4g is a great device).
it's up to you , but i think HTC is better!
Not in the camera department. If you want a camera phone look at samsung, nokia or sony's selection.

[Q] [Suggestion]Which android phone should I go for?

Hi Guys,
I am planning to move to android phone and have zeroed on to some phones, i would love to hear your suggestion on these phones and which one should I prefer.
I would like to have a near future proof version both in h/w and update capability spec...(I am a HTC fan but willing to move to other manufacturer)
Ur suggestion are warmly welcome.
1. HTC Incredible S
2. Samsung Nexus S
3. HTC Desire S
4. HTC Desire Z
My Choice
All of them look awesome devices, but if I were you I would discard the HTC Desires and the Incredible: as to my know, none of them has a camera zoom, and, since I want my mobile to be a portable camera, this would be a huge problem for me. Therefore, the Desire Z's HSDPA and HSUPA speed are pretty low. The Incredible has a 8 megapixel camera, that, in my opinion, you can't completely exploit since you don't have a zoom.
So, my choice is Samsung Nexus S, it runs Android 2.3 (that looks awesome) has a very good camera and connection speed, and, last but not least, a huge amount of internal memory, that is pretty useful to store many applications. In this way, you could also avoid to partition your SD card (as I had to) in order to have space for big apps.

Thanks a lot for providing the information on each set. My brother bought Nexus S, an awesome device but again it does not have a camera zoom!! which i think you missed that . and found some issues in its GPS, was comparing it with an Iphone4. I have researched more and planning for Desire S(not yet reached the retailers here in India), as it is almost simmilar to Incredible except the camera and it Desire S has Android2.3
What do you people suggest about DesireHD?
Thanks again bagongs for you time
I personally love my Incredible but it's definitely a matter of personal opinion and research. If picture taking (especially the zoom feature) is really important to you, I may not choose the Incredible.
If you plan on rooting and messing with custom ROMs, I have loved my Incredible for this purpose. The touch screen is very responsive and I've never had problems with my GPS. A problem that I have had however is with battery life.
The Samsung has excellent battery life and a much more vibrant screen, so if this is an important factor you may consider the Samsung.
Unfortunately I am not very familiar with the Desire line of Android phones. I've never been disappointed with any HTC phone that I've owned though. Just do your research and if you get a chance, try and play around with a couple of them if you have a retailer that carries them. You can also look up some videos of how they perform on YouTube and cnet as well as read some more customer reviews on each.

new phone, what to get?

ok, my x10 was just returned to me on warranty and the new one i can't hear on the speaker and it's not getting good reception at my work. so i am exchanging it, again, for something else with att on an early upgrade. but not sure what i want this time. need something cheap or free. my options are:
xperia play
captivate
focus
htc surround
inspire (refurb)
impulse
my previous devices have been:
x10a + nexus S
g1
e72x
iphone 3gs
iphone 2g
8525
8125
2125
now with the past few years being android, all of my contacts, email, calendar, etc are through google services. i could easily convert them over, and i really want to try something different other than android. i would really like a wp7 phone.
my only requirements are:
good camera w/ hd video recording
good music player
turn by turn
google maps like functions
loud ear piece and ringtone
i'm at the point where i don't really want to mess around with flashing and cracking anymore. just want it to work and go.
really considering the focus.

Ill explain. S off is a short for secruity off. Htc devices have a secruity radio in them to prevent modification. Once this is off the phone is open to rooted apps kernals and custom roms
You want the slide for sure it has a dual core processor. I game a lot and have not had any lag issues ever.

Don't forget the part where an ipod or zune video cable goes right from the headphone jack to red/white/yellow (rca) connections...the most universal way of plugging into a TV.
TV out is seamless and works phenominally well - I play many more video games now with this device since I plug into televisions everywhere I go and have huge picture.
Game emulators work fantastically well, and once you plug into a TV your device becomes the controller (and console woohoo).
Given the raw power of the hardware on this phone, and the TV out capability, welcome to the future of what gaming is going to be.
Part of the intention behind the snapdragon processor was to create a way of giving people video games on par with console quality and a market in their hand around the clock. The most lucrative business model from the game industry standpoint is the one that doesn't have them storing, shipping and managing lots of physical inventory and only being limited to a handful of hours a day that they can sell it.
Much better to have no inventory or warehouses, and a product that sells around the clock. The fact that the console/controller is also the market just makes impulse buys and sales increase, while giving the end user exactly what they want.
People defend their phone against mine and try to argue tit-for-tat specs right up until I plug into a TV and start playing starfox or symphony of the night (yep, from a phone).
If you don't get this device, since you've mentioned gaming as one of the primary purposes, you'll probably regret it.

it's no doubt to choose slide.
better cpu and the smooth QWERTY
I'd go with the mt4gs because it has a better processor, screen, and other "updated" features from the mt4g. The gaming would be nicer because of the better processor, dual core, etc.

Yep, you got it.
You won't find any official documentation on it (but if you do, please share!) - the TV-out capability is what finally sold me on the device. ( I wanted it anyway, but that was the clincher)
Couldn't be happier with any other piece of cellular technology then this device, and the TV thing really is just plug and play...i'll plug in to the TV in the middle of a game without lag and keep right on cruising.
I keep saying that this should have been the selling point for the phone, and yet...not a whisper about it from HTC.
yep, i've mapped the buttons into the snes emulator, using a keyboard is better than the screen for gameplay, but i wouldnt say it's easy to play games with it either way.

I'm definitely thinking that the bluetooth controller is the final answer. I don't like the idea of passing around my phone as the controller to other people. It's fine for my use, but out and about other people want to play too...I don't like handing this device over to other people.
I keep having other things spring up in front of me that have to be handled first with this phone, but seeing what's up with the bluetooth controller issue is very close on my list. Sometime in the next week a person I work on android stuff with in my neighborhood is trying to bring his wii controllers over so we can sit down with our phones and tablets and make a day out of learning what we don't know.
Ultimately, i'd like to get a sixaxis controller working on the device - for all I know it works out of the box with the market app, but I wouldn't bet on it. I think I remember someone posting about it a few weeks ago - and looking into it briefly it seemed like a dead end without kernel source.
Now that we have it, a lot of postponed projects are being woken up in sequence, and having someone to sit down and bounce ideas off of with for a solid day or three is something i'm really looking forward to.
Because really, that's the answer. Walk up to the TV and plug into the audio/video, set the game up, and leave the phone by the TV and play from the couch with a bluetooth controller.
Just like in the old days, when you had to walk up to the system to change games and stuff.
Also, I refuse to play things like the original mortal kombat where i'm trained through and through to include excess pressure on the buttons. Since it's a much more delicate device then an old 8-bit controller...I know i'll break it.
Having a real controller would solve that problem and let me play some of the games on my emulator that are staring me in the face sitting here. All the games I grew up with...and no hardware to run it on. Then this phone comes along, and I can play my old console games on the TV again.
Love this website.
Gotta love how the makers of the phones and os's spend all this time tryin to lock people out from changing them and then there is this website where all these people know how to do almost anything to these new/old phone. Is there any MyTouch 4G Slide rom that has the 1080p function working as of 12/16/12?

So I've been lurking around XDA for a while now. I'm not new to Android, and in fact I've used this site before to customize the Huawei Ideos/T-Mobile Comet.
I replaced that old phone with a T-Mobile MyTouch 4G Slide and I've had it for a year unmodded
Anyways, one major thing that made me hold off on changing the rom on my phone is the fact that no matter what ROM was out, it couldn't record any higher than 720p. Now to most people, that isn't an issue, but the MAIN reason I bought the phone was for the 1080p recording.
With that being said, has there been any ROM developed that finally fixed the 1080p recording? I've read that the phone's ROM is based off the HTC Sensation, which is another phone with a similar camera and that recently got 1080p fixed. Has it been fixed for the Mytouch or is it on the way?
Also, what are the best roms for this phone with the least bugs?
Thanks for your time.

I've had the MT4GS for over a year now, S-OFF and unlocked. I've tested/run most of the available ROMs. Several of the newer ROMs are quite nice, but I think 1080P video is out of the question except for stock-based ROMs. Even though I've run some of the newer ROMs, I always end up going back to the Miktouch 0.7 ROM because it is just so stable and everything works like it is supposed to work. It is based on the last HTC stock ROM (the 1.63.531.2) but has been extensively tweaked and modded to make it much more smooth and unbloated. And 1080P video works perfect, of course.

yeah the one of the most glaring issue for our device especially as compared to the sensation for ICS and newer is 1080p recording. any stock based ROM will have it, but anything else pretty much wont (yet...hopefully...)
It may just be me, but I think 1080p is a bit over rated for this phone. I can't find a significant difference between 720p and 1080p......it may just be because I'm used to 720p

I believe it's as much bragging rights as anything Strapped. It's certainly not because it limits usability.
If just viewing on the phone, then you'd be correct that there is little to no difference between 720P and 1080P recordings. But, exporting the video to view on a large screen, like a 47" 1080P TV, then yes, you would definitely see a very big difference in the quality and resolution. Saying "get a camera" is rather disingenuous. Why don't we all go back to carrying around a dumb phone, an mp3 player, a camera, a pager? Let's get a manpurse to hold it all!

Or people like you can get off their ass and start coding....just saying. Its not a walk down memory lane figuring this out. It sucks that when a dev tries its not good enough and then when we say go buy a camera were basically called a smartass. The DS camera is a joke if your not on Sense point blank period, no way around the garbage this produces nonstock.
The whole attitude of ill help you if you help me has left this community in a big way. And that's cool for you guys, cause continuing to want and not help will leave everyone stranded. Chill the **** out, dude. I wasn't slamming you and your rant is way out of line here. This was an honest discussion of the 1080P capabilities and a desire to have it available on ROMs other than stock. If it is your idea that only people who code and contribute code should use or have any voice in alternate ROM development, then I think you'd have a very lonely forum.

The main reason the Mytouch 4g slide was praised was because of the camera. It was pretty advanced for its time. In fact, there are few phones out there that match the Mytouch 4g slide in productivity and features. Most phones that now have 8megapixel cameras and 1080p recording don't even have a keyboard. The Mytouch doesn't sacrifice anything, with that being said, why would I (or anyone really) downgrade the mytouch?
Think about it this way.... why would you buy a Corvette and downgrade its engine? For better fuel economy? The car gets good mileage as is. The phone's the same way. My only gripes with the stock rom on the phone is the bloatware.
I did find something I liked so I'll play around with it see if its decent enough for me.

Miktouch 0.7 doesn't have any bloatware, it is tweaked nicely, runs very smoothly. It is stock-based, from the last HTC OTA for this phone, so the 1080P video works perfectly.

Relax man, we're all friends here... It goes without saying this is more of a user biased device, considering how few devs there are.
You have to be ok with being just one of the few devs and not having that many people actively being able to help you. That's just how it is. Most people won't dev unless they're inspired or motivated to (insert reason X here). And there isn't much you can say or do to change that. Not every device will have the luxury of having multiple devs, and we're lucky to have the ones that we have.
I understand where you're coming from though. Have you seen any other forums where there's like only one dev? I swear it's like one momma pig and litters of runts. I won't mention which device, but there's more typed out thanking and BS going on in the dev section than anything else. I don't condone such behavior, but hey, whatever floats their boat.
But just because I don't contribute code doesn't mean I'm not helpful. Or at least I still think I am.

But it kinda is a "whatever they say goes" deal... If you don't code, whatever input you give is nothing more than an opinion or some general help at best. Not much authority with that.

Then it is just devs doing a circle jerk. Having users actually use the ROMs and contribute their experiences in using those ROMs gives the dev a lot of feedback on how and what to improve or change.
I used to be all worried about losing my 1080p video capabilities when I first started flashing.
Then I realized I wasn't filming HD movies for Hollywood production and most of my videos never left the phone, let alone YT videos are rarely 1080p anyway. I'm betting most can't even tell the difference because it only matters on a screen larger than 35 inches anyway.
Get over it and you're in a wonderful place of magical ROMs built by great folks devoting their free time to mutual enjoyment.
Thank you developers!

Of course, if you're only viewing on a phone it makes no difference. But, some of us do export the videos to play on a large screen. Then, it does make a big difference. I want the best quality video possible when I'm viewing vids of my goddaughter I've taken each year when I go to China to visit.

If HD quality videos are that important, you really should own a professional camera for such things. The quality of the camera on your phone isn't comparable to a professional one made even 3-4 years ago. That's why I have my Olympus E-PL1. That takes 720p video that blows anything my phone does/did out of the water.
You're essentially buying a Hyundai for the speed. Just because it can go 100mph, doesn't mean it does it well.

Interesting point....
But then I saw this article yesterday and it puts an interesting spin on the whole 720p / 1080p debate....

Ugh, that article frustrates me.
I'm well aware of this movement and also aware of how much a joke it is. I partnered with two local professional photographers, one a retired Xerox executive, who were also partners at Image City Photography Gallery in Rochester, NY within the last few years and discovered they held a mobile-phone only exhibit (once, mind you). The photos were awful, just like the one displayed in the article you linked. Even the partner photographers dabbled in it a bit, and with their genius, they touched up the photos HEAVY with effects to look different and interesting, but unless you were normally of the heavy distorted style or explained that they were taken with smartphones, the quality was shunned.
Please don't fall into the trap that art can be anything. That basically says that any photo taken anywhere at any time of anything is thus art. Then you're the same as a teenage girl who discovers Instagram and thinks she's some professional artist or some idiot that buys a $1200 DSLR thinking it automatically means they know anything about photography. Show me an entire wedding's professional photos done with a smartphone...
I'm not saying it won't get to the point when our smartphones are also professional quality photo devices, but we're years away.
No need to respond, just my opinions and ranting; as Instagram-nation frustrates me beyond belief.

So why have a smartphone, just carry a dumb phone, an MP3 player, a camera, a pager, a laptop, and a nice backpack to hold it all. This phone has a 1080P video ability that works extremely well and takes excellent video. If I wanted to carry a separate camera with me everywhere and have it in my hand all the time on the chance that I might see something I want to record, that would be great, wouldn't it? Do you have that Olympus with you ALL THE TIME?
By your logic, every complaint about a ROM can be easily solved. Keyboard not working correctly? Well, you don't need a keyboard, there is a keyboard on the screen you can use, you're stupid for wanting that qwerty, anyway. Music not playing well/audio cutting out? Get a real music player like an iPod, if you're serious about music you shouldn't be using a phone anyway. Battery life sucks? Shouldn't be using your phone like a computer anyway, get a laptop with a bigger battery.
And the "you're not a professional so don't bother wanting better quality"... My reply to that would not be allowed in this forum. I've seen a lot of people carrying professional equipment that couldn't take a good photograph if their life depended upon it. Just because you can afford to buy expensive crap doesn't mean you know any more about photography than the guy with a crappy smartphone.
I've taken video at 720P using a CM10 ROM and I've compared it to video of the same subject taken at 1080P using the MIktouch ROM. The difference when viewing on even a 42" 1080P television screen is very apparent. I don't have to be a professional photographer to notice or appreciate it.
