Build your own Music dock - Captivate General

Hey, check this out... I've had this for a while, but today I found this datasheet on the net today. http://www.mediafire.com/?d4e21efhuktctcb
This is the datasheet for our USB switch. Well, very similiar. You see, Samsung asked Fairchild semiconductors to build them a chip. The result was the FSA9480. This is the datasheet for the FSA9280.. They're functionally the same chip.
This datasheet contains plans to build a music dock!

Wow, awesome find!
How much are the chips? Do they offer demos?

This chip is located inside your phone. Those wires referenced above are your USB port. You can build this with resistors and switches

Nice! That would definitely beat using an aux in, especially in the car!

The microphone isn't hooked up to the USB port in the Galaxy S phones, also I don't think the switch resistors will do anything, because the device driver doesn't recognize them as far as I know.
The alternatives are to use a 365K resistor between ID and ground for Home Dock mode, or a 619K resistor for Car Dock mode. The speaker connections are the same and you can connect +5V to pin 1 for charging.
See this thread for info about enabling the audio output, and issues with Car Dock audio output in Gingerbread.

Anyone try the switch resistors? I'd like to build one but don't want to waste the time if it won't work.

I ordered some usb cables to hack up to enable Home/Car Dock and also use audio over usb. I was dreaming on my way home the other day how I would love hard buttons to changes songs etc on the cappy.
But I have the exact same concerns as Beano, if the driver/app doesn't know what to do with the resistance its receiving then this is pretty useless.
So do any of the Dev's know if this type of thing is possible or if they car add the necessary code to make it work? I have no trouble building the controller but need more info on the chances of working.

There is a stock car dock for the captivate with media buttons. Its apparently not supported with gt-i9010 because an Andromeda3 user complained about it. We base Andromeda off giorgio Armani captivate firmware.

Are the resistor switches (s1 through s12) recognized by anything (music app or otherwise)? It would be cool to make a car/desk dock that you could advance tracks, play/pause, etc. by switching different resistors.
Has anyone tried these switches with a music app to see if they do anything? I would like to make a car dock with momentary switches for the resistors, but didn't want to spend time on something if the software isn't there (I'm a tinkerer, so I don't have the expertise to solve anything too complex).
Thanks for the info posted here!

Well that was the easy part. I was also going to do that. I have a few micro usb cables ready to be hacked up. But the real question is if the "buttons" would work and what app, if any supports them.

Bigger question is the charging issue. On CM9 Nightly 11, I have working Dock Audio, however, the phone will not enter in to "high charge" mode. That is to say, I'm still losing battery power when I have music playing, Google Nav running and bluetooth off. I thought that simply adding the 619K Ohm to pins 4 and 5 would cause the phone to charge at it's full rate of 750mA. Or is it something that TouchWiz enables?

I do know there is a post around here somewhere outlining what to do to generic charger/wire to enable full rate. And here it is..... No resister needed....

I have already tried shorting out D+ and D- on the microUSB side while on my 1A USB car adapter. That did not work either. I got the same rate of battery loss as on this car dock cable. I guess, that's another reason to look at the actual lighter plug in the Tahoe to see if it's putting out the necessary amperage.
And as far as getting the buttons to work, I think that's a no-go. An app would need to know to monitor for those particular signals. I'm not a programmer at all.

so I bought the dock for the mytouch 4g, and have to say it is pretty good, for the price though they should have included power cables... The design of the dock is good, and if they took out the mini usb plug and just did the 3-pins, the dock would still stay in place.. dunno why they didnt do it ??
well, two days after I bought the dock, I modded it so that every time I would dock it, the dock app would activate will post up vid and pics

I opened the dock up and checked the wires, I read on a different post about the nexus dock and how it activates the dock mode on the nexus 1.. well the green wire is what activates the dock mode , and I checked the wires on the mytouch dock and it has a green wire, so I hooked up the usb plug, and ran a wire to the green wire to see if it would do the same as the nexus dock and to my surprise it works...
nothing to special, but I might do away with the usb plug and put 3-pins, did this just to see if it would work...

One of the problems with the Nexus dock that has those three buttons is that you cannot sync with it. It only powers the phone. I have two of them and the only issue I have is its difficult to seat the phone in the dock. Let us know if the dock will sync with those three buttons.
Wow, your mod makes me all the more frustrated that this official dock uses USB. If you pull this off, I think you could have a nice little mod business on the side. Consider me an interested party.
I thought about modifying the dock so that it's easier to seat the phone, but you're going the distance! So cool.
I still can't believe they released this phone with charging pins, and haven't released a single accessory to use them.
thats correct, the three pins are only for power, ground and home/car dock app activation.. I know that the green wire and the yellow wire are data +/-.. with the design of the dock, the dock hugs the phone perfectly and the pins sync perfectly, I just lost one of the smaller pins so I didnt get to solder it to the green wire but it charges...

Thanks Jon C, the thing is hard to open because it is superglued on. I mean its not that hard, but trying to open it without damaging the glossiness of it is pretty hard lol!!
I would do it, but not alot of people would buy the dock for that price!! it kinda hard to get the pins perfect but I got it to work....
exactly what I was thinking, why have the three pins when you don't use it or have anything that uses it...
I was thinking of modding the powerskin that they released for this phone, but dunno if I wanna spend 70-80 on it..

Ok.. where did you get the charging pins from? I'd like to try this mod myself because, as far as I'm concerned, the dock as it sits now is useless. It's only a matter of time before its use breaks the USB connector from the pcb in the phone.
Thanks!
Got the pins from allied electronics... Look for battery pins..
But its at your own risk if anything goes wrong..
I say the hardest thing is to get the holes to line up correctly when you drill...
Also, the green or yellow wire works to acrivate the dock app..

Car Dock Trigger?

I know the Atrix 2 car dock hasn't been released yet, but I'm assuming it triggers the car dock mode the same way for the Atrix. I'm also going off the assumption that it triggers with a specific resistor across pin 4 and 5 in the usb.
Does anyone know what resistor value is needed to do this? I know I can manually trigger the mode, or just buy the dock when it's available, but I want to be able to make my own dock that works with a case (I have the red speck currently). I also want to use the ability to output the audio from the usb.
I'm coming from a Captivate, so I was hoping there were similar capabilities with the car dock. I really love this phone so far (got it last friday) and I've already made a custom car dock, but I wanted more automation once it's docked. I'll post pictures when I get it done.
the dock was released, I have it and it's actually really cool.

Is there any chance you could check the resistance across the pins for me? If not, I might be able to pursuade an at&t guy at the store to let me check it with my multi-meter .

I'm waiting for them to come in-stock again, but I may build/mod something I can hard-mount instead of using the suction cup.
Any idea if the suction cup arm can be removed from the dock portion, like the ball/socket setup garmin uses ?
I used this http://www.amazon.com/RAM-Mounting-...ETAM/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1320502550&sr=8-2
along with this http://www.slipgripcarmounts.com/SlipGrip-RAM-Mount-Motorola-Atrix-4g-OtterBox-Commuter_p_99694.html for my OG Atrix with the commuter case and without a case my A2 fits in it perfectly.
I'd like to use the Motorola mount just so I don't have do deal with a cable lying around when it's not in use (can more permanently route the one that's tied into the dock). I'd like to combine it with a hard-mount for my Mini from Cravenspeed. (not allowed to post links yet)

sorry man, I've been without the dock for a little while now. I should have it and my car back on Monday.
I more or less have my home-made car dock finished. I'm still hoping to figure out how to trigger the car dock mode so I can rig it to have audio out through the usb.
It's made almost completely out of PVC pipe that has been formed by heating with a blow torch and then dyed with fabric dye dissolved in methyl ethyl ketone. The flash from the camera makes it look a little purple, but it really looks pretty black (I could dye it a little more to deepen the black). I think it looks better in natural lighting than the pictures show.
If anyone is interested in more details on how I made it, I could write something up.

Does anyone know if we can get the audio out through the usb without needing to trigger the car dock mode? I haven't found out the the resistor trigger yet, but I was wondering if I could get it to work without it until I do.
Alright, I'm just going to try some values. I'm wondering if the resistor values that worked with the galaxy s line (like my old captivate) would also work with this. It would trigger with a 619kohm resistor.
Anyone know if there's any harm in just trying various resistors? I would think not since it's passive, but just want to make sure.

I'm not sure if an app like Tasker or Profile Scheduler could change setting like that when in Cardock or not. I haven't tried yet.
The little cube is where the micro usb connectors and their wires are nested. I also assume that the OEM dock has the resistor trigger in there to let the phone know it's docked.
Speaking of resistor...I still haven't gotten the correct value from anyone. Once I have that value, my homemade dock will have the same functionality as the official dock.
do you still need the resistor values for the car dock trigger and if you do what pins should i check?

Thanks for the suggestion, but I'd like the ability to just dock it and go into car dock mode. Also, I want the phone to output the audio with pins 2 & 3 (data) instead of plugging in the headphone jack.
Right now, I have Llama (like Tasker) set to start Mort Audio player for my audio books when I have both the charger and headphone jack plugged in (as well as increasing the media volume, turning on screen auto rotation, and whatnot). It works well, but it would be nice to have more integration.

[Q] Cable question - cannot use headphones jack during bluetooth call

Has anyone been able to find a micro usb cable that has a 3.5mm audio jack on the other end, that can also charge the phone via USB? I have found a few examples of homemade contraptions that people have posted on XDA, but nothing polished enough to actually convince me they work. I am trying to be able to charge my phone in the car, while playing audio out via the micro usb port. In theory, this should alleviate my phone from trying to pump out bluetooth phone conversations thru the headphones jack during a call.
Thx, in advance.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong but as far as I know these devices aren't able to receive power via the headphone jack you would need to open the phone and solder a connection between the headphone jack and USB port to get it to charge remember doing something similar to get PSPs to charge via USB back in the day

Think I might have figured this out...
This cable:

Should allow me to charge the phone while NOT using the headphones jack... and hopefully let my bluetooth in the car take over during a call. Gonna have to wait a bit for shipping, but I will update you as it comes in. Now, if I could simply find someone who makes a solid cable that doesn't require me to connect two separate ones, I would be golden.

I probably mispoke. Here's what I am up against, and trying to do.
The S3 currently has no ability to switch audio out devices during a phone call, if the headphone jack is in use. The option to switch to bluetooth headset is there, but it's grayed out. What does that mean? If I am using the heaphones jack, and connecting that to the aux in port in my car... I am unable to use my car's bluetooth to make or receive calls.
My way around this is to figure out how to get audio out via the micro USB port, while still retaining a way to charge the phone. Most BMW autos from the past 7 years or newer have their BMW to iPod cable, which has the male 30p iPod connector at one end, and a USB + 3.5mm jack at the other end. What I need to find is a way to connect the 30p iPod connector to the S3 micro USB. I have only found the cable I linked above... but will keep looking. Just wondering if others have found a way around this, other than using a bluetooth A2DP bluetooth streaming device like a parrot or the belkin version.
Unless you are using that cable with an iPod you won't get sound to output through it. Trust me I've tried it on my 2008 BMW and it didn't work. Are you trying to get it to work over the cars Bluetooth or a headset? To me it seems like an aux Bluetooth dongle like those made by blackberry may suit your needs

I am trying to get the phone call audio over the bluetooth in the car. When anything is plugged into the headphones jack, the phone automatically routes it thru there, killing my phone calls. The car thinks it's using the bluetooth, the phone thinks it's using the headphones... end result, no sound, unless I unplug the headset each time.
The bluetooth dongle from blackberry I found for $200, bleh, not paying that. Why did the bmw cable not work for you? Also, where did you find your female 30p cable?
The easy fix is for samsung to update the phone so I can switch audio devices in a call...
Thx, in advance.
I'm also very interested in this. It sounds like we could do it on software. I'm sure it's been done in cyanogenmod before, but I'd like to have it for TW.
Anyone have any idea where to look (what apk, files, etc)? I'm no 1337 dev, but I can hack my way around apks and write java.

I have experienced this same issue. My 2008 Acura TL has Hands Free (Bluetooth) but no way to connect external audio player other than with the Aux connection. So when I have the phone plugged in to the Aux and I receive a call I have to unplug the Aux first, then take the call, then plug the Aux back in when the call is over.
I think the resolution is going to have to be a software update/patch that fixes the source used for audio a when call is received.
All, I was able to find a solution that worked for me. While in the car I can charge the phone, play music, and still answer calls hands free (with fully working two way communication) all from only the usb port.
I am running a TW based rom (Bean's R11 with Lean Kernel 0.9). I'm confident this will work in all TW roms and will most likely work in AOSP roms as well (although I haven't tried it).
The solution I used was to make a custom USB cable.
Our phone (along with almost every Android phone) uses a micro usb B port. A micro usb B port has 5 pins (Vcc, D-, D+, IDCON, GND).

The 3.5mm aux input in my car has 3 connectors (Tip, Ring, and Sleeve).
http://pinouts.ru/Home/Tele35s_pinout.shtml
Tip=Left Audio
Ring=Right Audio
Sleeve=signal gnd
This post pretty much sums it up http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=14846636&postcount=9
In a nutshell you connect pin 2 (D-) of the micro usb B connector to the left audio (tip), pin 3 (D+) to right audio (ring), pin 5 (GND) to the signal gnd (sleeve), and pin 4 (IDCON) to a large resistor (I used 470K ohm) which connects to pin 5 (GND). The resistor is absolutely needed in order to limit current.
To enable charging, connect a car charger Vcc (+5v) to pin 1 of the micro usb B connector (Vcc) and gnd to pin 5 (GND). As gnd in a car is ultimately going to the same place (chassis), we don't need to worry about differing grounds.
When you plug this cable into your phone, the presence of the resistor between IDCON and GND triggers the phone to enter "dock mode". If you go into settings, dock, and check "Output Audio Mode", then an analog audio signal will be output over the data lines (and GND) of the micro usb port.
This worked well in my car and did not mess with the bluetooth microphone.
This could also be adapted for an iphone connector (if your car doesn't have a convenient 3.5mm aux jack). See the pinout for details.

I am going to order some electronic parts to make a nice clean cable that will last a while. When I get around to ordering the parts, I'll try to remember to post the list here.

I bought the car dock from vzw with my s3 that actually had this very cable... usb on one end with the other end split into micro usb and 3.5mm jack
Couldnt tell you if it would work the way you are asking though... every phone ive ever used always puts a headphone jack as priority over a bluetooth device until disabled or Bt settings are reconfigured to phone only on bt, media audio left unchecked
Granted... my car might not be as smart as yours id really like to get audio through micro usb running as well without having a mess of ghetto rigged wires all across my dash

FYI,
I ordered this cable and am going to use the configuration described here.
I already have the resistor and one of the DIY micro usb connectors with housing laying around, but this would also work.
It really is quite a clean setup. Besides, the paranoid side of me would rather make the cable rather than buy one because I know exactly what the cable circuit is. I'm sure a lot of cables out there just short pins 4 and 5 on the micro usb connector (to save the cost of acquiring/installing the resistor).
I would also like to know a solution to this issue, as it is in the software. I ran ASOP JB on the Nexus and the S3 and they always routed the phone calls over my BT earpice even when I had the headphone jack plugged in for music.
My music would pause while on the phone and resume as soon as I hung-up the call.
I hope a dev can sort this out in the TW ROMS, as they are so much more stable than the AOSP that is out at the moment.
My question is if your car has blue tooth why not use blue tooth audio and charge your phone that is what I do in my fusion

Thanks that is what i was doing.. i'm wondering why all this trouble..
Issue resolved
I resolved this issue for myself by building a cable similar to the ones mentioned in this thread.
Here is my proof of concept. Working perfectly for me. PM me if you need info about the cable.

Droid 3 desk dock is compatible

Just as the title says, the Droid 3 desk dock is a perfect fit for the Q if anyone was looking around for one.

Here's a 5 picture album I just quickly shot.

Sorry for the picture quality. I shot it all on my Note 10.1, the CM10 camera performance is still quite bad.
I use the original Motorola Standard HDMI Dock. It is universal and works with any Motorola Devices, as example Droid4, Droid3, Photon Q and Xoom2 Tablet.

...because it has USB ports
BUT i have one question. Have you tried USB OTG cable on phq? - i have powered cable, but only usb mouse and keyboard works...flashdisk cannot be mount
Anyone know of a desk dock that can fit the Photon Q with a case on it (particularly the Otterbox Commuter)? The Otterbox case is thick, so probably not but I'm hoping anyway...
AW: Droid 3 desk dock is compatible
Is the one from atrix compatible with the Q?
Answering my question:
The one from atrix do NOT work!

my phq works fine with usb-otg adapter, i can read some usb flash disk that i have.
but as far as i know, when usb-otg adapter connected, the phone will give voltage/power to the USB device.
at this point i have doubt about phq + the multimedia dock.
reason being is the dock provide USB connection and at the same time (I assume) it provide charging power to the phone.
this is conflicting as if the USB port means to connect to other devices (keyboard/mouse) as USB-OTG, then at the same time phone try to give power + get power from the charger. this may damage the phone.
but i may be wrong as i don't have the dock.
the dock mentioned by the OP is quite cheap on [email protected], i think i'll grab one. thx for sharing

I'm using StickMount from Chainfire to mount flash disks.
Only my high speed USB3.0 stick doesn't work.

could u plz be specific why it's not working, size problem? cuz the img CornholioGSM posted seems just like atrix dock........just thinking about to grab one on ebay
Hi!
I thought so myself. After buying one from ebay I can say it dose NOT fit. First: the hdmi pin on the dock is turned by 180 degrees.
After fixing that by removeing the complete hdmi pin from dock I could test the fit. The Q is to large for the dock. It will fit uneaven if tried with serious force. I did not want to damage the usb port on my q for a worse 'fitting' dock...

Could anyone confirm if the Droid 3 vehicle dock (car mount) is also compatible with the Photon Q? Thanks!

I know its been over a half a year since you asked and no one replied but I figured maybe you would still appreciate a response. There seem to be two dock modes: Desk (what you call bedside) and Car. Motorola made an official dock for this phone which put it into car mode however it seemed to have been pretty limitedly available when it was out and is now discontinued; thanks for abandoning us Moto. I cant even seem to find it listed on amazon used which is annoying as I have one I want to sell off (hint hint).
It has a special USB cable that goes with it that has an audio out cable down at the end where it plugs into the car charger so you dont have to plug a headphone cable into your phone to get audio out to your stereo, worked quite well when my phone was still alive.
I also have one of these droid 3 desk docks mentioned here that I need to find a good home for now.

car charger cable with usb audio out

I just upgraded from a galaxy s3 to the new s4. The one thing that's really bothering me is that a cable I've used in my car with the s3 isn't working with the s4.
The cable plugs into the usb jack on the phone, and the other end splits into a usb jack that I plug into my charger, and into an audio jack that goes into the aux. in of my car stereo. With my s3, all I had to do was plug in my phone, and it would go into car dock mode, routing audio out through the cable.
The cable doesn't seem to work with my s4. I already checked the box in settings to play audio over usb when in dock mode, but the phone doesn't go into dock mode when plugged into the cable like the s3 did.
Is my phone defective, or did they change something in the s4? How can I get this to work again? Is there an updated cable I need to buy?
in advance for any help!

the s3 and s4 have different specs in regards to that issue...sorry I dont know the technical terms to help elaborate but no it will not work the same way. I had the same issue with my ibolt dock for the s3 not working with my s4.

I was really disappointed by that! I have searched and been unable to locate a cable that does what the $7 cable I used with my S3 did. I found another *possible* solution. I ordered this from Amazon:
AUDI 99-10 GROM Android USB interface adapter VAGM
This is specific to my car, but they make them for lots of vehicles. If it doesn't work, I'll return it and keep trying. I'll update this thread next week to let you guys know if it works.
In the meantime, if anyone else has a simple, one-cable solution to both charge and play audio from the phone in a car, let me know!
Ibolt now has the ibolt xprodock which works the same way but also gives you the option to mount it to your windshield or dash and use as a gps which I like

I may end up buying that mount and using just the cable from it. I already have the world's best car mount (if anyone wants to know about it, ask me and I'll let you know why I like it so much!)

I just got my S4 and I've been considering the iMagnet mount. I thought that with the simplicity of just "snapping" it onto the mount, and with the problems people seem to be having with combined audio/usb cables, it would be great if I could find a bluetooth audio solution (there's a thread about it out there). It would be so cool to just pop the phone onto the magnet, start the car, and have bluetooth audio flowing through my car without having to attach anything to anything.

You'd still have to plug it in to charge though, if you're using the phone while driving (navigation, pandora, etc.) That's why the solution I had with my S3 was so great. Just pop the phone onto the magnet mount, and plug in the USB. I got audio and charging with just that one cable. I'm looking to do that again with the S4.
Yeah, I know I'd still have to plug it in to charge. Thing is, mostly I just drive to and from work, so my phone is charging while I'm at home and while I'm at work, and even though I have a charger in the car, there's not a HUGE need to always be charging.
My iBolt pro dock works great! I haven't tried my iBolt dock(original), nor have I tried custom roms with either for the s4 ( i'm comming from a S3 running LiquidSmooth. I've had audio out issues with other roms)

Thanks for the feedback! Can I ask you a question about the dock? If I were to order it, would I be able to separate the cable from the dock, and use just the cable? Again, I'm really happy with my iMagnet dock, but I want the cable to function like it used to with my S3.
Thanks!
I'm not sure you meant to quote me? I don't actually have the dock. Maybe you meant to quote cogcaviz24?

Oops, you're right. Thanks! I edited my post.
Yesterday I pulled the cable I was using in my car out, and put back the separate charger and headphone jack so that I can listen to music from my phone in my car. It looks so messy and is a hassle with two cables! Hopefull the Grom Audio adapter I ordered works!
I'll let everyone know.
Bit of a thread revival, but I have this problem in my car as well. I have a possible solution that I'm going to try in the morning, but I think it might have something to do with the fact that the GS4 automatically mounts as a "Media Device", whereas my previous phone would mount as a "USB Mass Storage Device".
I just installed an app that allows the GS4 to mount as a USB storage device, so I'm going to try running that tomorrow and see if that helps. I'll report back soon.

As promised, I wanted to give a review of this device. It works!
It was a bit of a hassle to set up, so if anyone has questions, let me know. It's all hard-wired now though, so I plug my phone into the USB cable, and it charges and passes audio through to the car stereo. The one really nice thing is that with the old USB to USB/ audio splitter that I had, there was some hiss/background noise. This new setup has none of that. It sounds great!
Again, if anyone orders one, let me know and I'll give you some pointers. The instructions weren't great, and it was a hassle to get it working.
