Has anyone been able to find a micro usb cable that has a 3.5mm audio jack on the other end, that can also charge the phone via USB? I have found a few examples of homemade contraptions that people have posted on XDA, but nothing polished enough to actually convince me they work. I am trying to be able to charge my phone in the car, while playing audio out via the micro usb port. In theory, this should alleviate my phone from trying to pump out bluetooth phone conversations thru the headphones jack during a call.
Thx, in advance.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong but as far as I know these devices aren't able to receive power via the headphone jack you would need to open the phone and solder a connection between the headphone jack and USB port to get it to charge remember doing something similar to get PSPs to charge via USB back in the day

Think I might have figured this out...
This cable:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Micro-USB-male-to-30P-Female-data-charge-M-F-adapter-for-Apple-iPhone-iPod-cable-/180962749596?pt=UK_Computing_CablesConnectors_RL&hash=item2a22386c9c
Plus This cable:

Should allow me to charge the phone while NOT using the headphones jack... and hopefully let my bluetooth in the car take over during a call. Gonna have to wait a bit for shipping, but I will update you as it comes in. Now, if I could simply find someone who makes a solid cable that doesn't require me to connect two separate ones, I would be golden.

I probably mispoke. Here's what I am up against, and trying to do.
The S3 currently has no ability to switch audio out devices during a phone call, if the headphone jack is in use. The option to switch to bluetooth headset is there, but it's grayed out. What does that mean? If I am using the heaphones jack, and connecting that to the aux in port in my car... I am unable to use my car's bluetooth to make or receive calls.
My way around this is to figure out how to get audio out via the micro USB port, while still retaining a way to charge the phone. Most BMW autos from the past 7 years or newer have their BMW to iPod cable, which has the male 30p iPod connector at one end, and a USB + 3.5mm jack at the other end. What I need to find is a way to connect the 30p iPod connector to the S3 micro USB. I have only found the cable I linked above... but will keep looking. Just wondering if others have found a way around this, other than using a bluetooth A2DP bluetooth streaming device like a parrot or the belkin version.
Unless you are using that cable with an iPod you won't get sound to output through it. Trust me I've tried it on my 2008 BMW and it didn't work. Are you trying to get it to work over the cars Bluetooth or a headset? To me it seems like an aux Bluetooth dongle like those made by blackberry may suit your needs

I am trying to get the phone call audio over the bluetooth in the car. When anything is plugged into the headphones jack, the phone automatically routes it thru there, killing my phone calls. The car thinks it's using the bluetooth, the phone thinks it's using the headphones... end result, no sound, unless I unplug the headset each time.
The bluetooth dongle from blackberry I found for $200, bleh, not paying that. Why did the bmw cable not work for you? Also, where did you find your female 30p cable?
The easy fix is for samsung to update the phone so I can switch audio devices in a call...
Thx, in advance.
I'm also very interested in this. It sounds like we could do it on software. I'm sure it's been done in cyanogenmod before, but I'd like to have it for TW.
Anyone have any idea where to look (what apk, files, etc)? I'm no 1337 dev, but I can hack my way around apks and write java.

I have experienced this same issue. My 2008 Acura TL has Hands Free (Bluetooth) but no way to connect external audio player other than with the Aux connection. So when I have the phone plugged in to the Aux and I receive a call I have to unplug the Aux first, then take the call, then plug the Aux back in when the call is over.
I think the resolution is going to have to be a software update/patch that fixes the source used for audio a when call is received.
All, I was able to find a solution that worked for me. While in the car I can charge the phone, play music, and still answer calls hands free (with fully working two way communication) all from only the usb port.
I am running a TW based rom (Bean's R11 with Lean Kernel 0.9). I'm confident this will work in all TW roms and will most likely work in AOSP roms as well (although I haven't tried it).
The solution I used was to make a custom USB cable.
Our phone (along with almost every Android phone) uses a micro usb B port. A micro usb B port has 5 pins (Vcc, D-, D+, IDCON, GND).
http://pinoutsguide.com/CellularPhones-P-W/samsung_cell_micro_usb_pinout.shtml
The 3.5mm aux input in my car has 3 connectors (Tip, Ring, and Sleeve).
http://pinouts.ru/Home/Tele35s_pinout.shtml
Tip=Left Audio
Ring=Right Audio
Sleeve=signal gnd
This post pretty much sums it up http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=14846636&postcount=9
In a nutshell you connect pin 2 (D-) of the micro usb B connector to the left audio (tip), pin 3 (D+) to right audio (ring), pin 5 (GND) to the signal gnd (sleeve), and pin 4 (IDCON) to a large resistor (I used 470K ohm) which connects to pin 5 (GND). The resistor is absolutely needed in order to limit current.
To enable charging, connect a car charger Vcc (+5v) to pin 1 of the micro usb B connector (Vcc) and gnd to pin 5 (GND). As gnd in a car is ultimately going to the same place (chassis), we don't need to worry about differing grounds.
When you plug this cable into your phone, the presence of the resistor between IDCON and GND triggers the phone to enter "dock mode". If you go into settings, dock, and check "Output Audio Mode", then an analog audio signal will be output over the data lines (and GND) of the micro usb port.
This worked well in my car and did not mess with the bluetooth microphone.
This could also be adapted for an iphone connector (if your car doesn't have a convenient 3.5mm aux jack). See the pinout for details.

I am going to order some electronic parts to make a nice clean cable that will last a while. When I get around to ordering the parts, I'll try to remember to post the list here.

I bought the car dock from vzw with my s3 that actually had this very cable... usb on one end with the other end split into micro usb and 3.5mm jack
Couldnt tell you if it would work the way you are asking though... every phone ive ever used always puts a headphone jack as priority over a bluetooth device until disabled or Bt settings are reconfigured to phone only on bt, media audio left unchecked
Granted... my car might not be as smart as yours id really like to get audio through micro usb running as well without having a mess of ghetto rigged wires all across my dash

FYI,
I ordered this cable and am going to use the configuration described here.
I already have the resistor and one of the DIY micro usb connectors with housing laying around, but this would also work.
It really is quite a clean setup. Besides, the paranoid side of me would rather make the cable rather than buy one because I know exactly what the cable circuit is. I'm sure a lot of cables out there just short pins 4 and 5 on the micro usb connector (to save the cost of acquiring/installing the resistor).
I would also like to know a solution to this issue, as it is in the software. I ran ASOP JB on the Nexus and the S3 and they always routed the phone calls over my BT earpice even when I had the headphone jack plugged in for music.
My music would pause while on the phone and resume as soon as I hung-up the call.
I hope a dev can sort this out in the TW ROMS, as they are so much more stable than the AOSP that is out at the moment.

Issue resolved
I resolved this issue for myself by building a cable similar to the ones mentioned in this thread.
Here is my proof of concept. Working perfectly for me. PM me if you need info about the cable.

My wife and I both have this phone. I have the gb rooted stock rom with voodoo lagfix. My wife has complete froyo stock straight out of the box.
The problem is when she connects her phone via auxiliary cable in her car the other person can't hear her but she can hear the other person during a call. So what I'm thinking is that it somehow disables the mic.
I don't have that problem on my phone but I'm not running complete stock. So anyone out there with 100 percent froyo stock have that same issue?? I know the fascinate initially had this but it was later fixed with an update.

If by auxiliary cable you mean car charger. Then no i don't have that issue. I recently flashed back to stock and im unrooted (phone is going back for another replacement). neither does my wife and she is stock as well. Also we are using the verizon brand car charger but idk it that makes a differance.
Not the car charger. Talking about aux cable that goes from car stereo to headphone jack in order to hear call and music from phone hrough car speakers

Well does it work with other phones? The "aux cable" you're taking about is actually called a 3.5mm jack. For a car mic to work, this jack must have 4 poles (4 sections). Having 3 (or even 2) is just a stereo output, and will not have any mic. As to why the mic isn't working for hers as it is on yours, it's probably something that was left out in the Froyo build that is now being implemented on the GB version.

OK then can someone with stock froyo test out the 3.5 jack cable and see if the mic is disabled.

killerapl,
So glad someone else else is reporting this! I actually posted this issue in a bluetooth thread. I assuming you mean your wife is talking via bluetooth rather than speaker phone, right?
I've had this problem since the beginning, and the only HUGE negative about this phone! Anyway, I am now running Gummycharged 2.0 FE, and it has a mic gain that helps...however, I up the gain to listen to my podcasts, but have to remember to take it all the way down in order to call out. I still have problems when people call me though... juggling between taking down the gain, and physically unplugging the auxiliary cable!
Was wondering if Gingerbread would fix this... been waiting for Samsung to do the official release so the gurus can mod to a custom ROM...and hopefully this will get addressed.
Oh, since I'm on bluetooth and listening to music (not streaming via bluetooth since my car won't allow), I have my car charger plugged-in which I would think would be a common scenario, and wondered why no one else is talking about this? Was wondering it my Charge thought I was docked or something.
Anyway, are you on a particular Gingerbread ROM? details... I might jump to this if yours works!
- Sara!
No, so the way we use it is we get the stereo cable that is hooked up to the stereo. We change the stereo option to "aux " in order to listen to our music from the phone through the car speakers. We plug the cable to the headphone jack. With my current gb setup I can be listening to music, accept a phone call and hear the person through my car speakers as well as they can hear me as I talk. With her stock phone she can listen to music and accept calls and hear the person on the call but the other person can't hear her. The phone somehow deactivates the mic.
I know the fascinate had this problem as well. I just want to make sure its a software problem and not her phone.

I am having this same problem when i have my phone plugged to a usb charger and using Bluetooth. Just about threw it out the window on the way home today. Thought it was just me. Also stock out of the box.
Resolved: No bluetooth when headphone plugged in
I had the same issue as OP no matter what ROM I used. I resolved it by making a cable.
It's basically a dock cable. When the micro usb is plugged in the phone goes into Car Dock mode (619K resistor across ID and GRD or pin 4 and 5). In the phone settings you set it to play sound through the dock when the phone is docked. When call comes in the phone is able to play the call through Bluetooth since no headphone jack is plugged in. You will find how to build the cable with some searching on Google.
Here is my proof of concept. :good: Total cost: About 10 bucks for the cables I modified and the micro usb breakout.

Thanks, but that won't work because its microphone is integrated into the box rather than external like the boom mic you see in my pic.
That's true but from what I understand, if your headphones have a Mike, it will use that instead.

The HS3000 would be perfect if it did this. But I have googled for the last ten minutes and haven't found anything that suggests it lets you use an external mic. Do you remember where you saw this info?:good:
Found one. And it took several hours of searching to locate this. So I'll post it up here in case anyone in the future needs something like this.

HTC BH S600 Bluetooth Stereo Headset
The built-in microphone is in the headset CABLES, rather than in the dongle itself.
So if you remove the headset and plug a different headset into the dongle, then the new headsets mic gets used. :good:
The only problem is these are not super easy to find in the USA unless you want to spend more than they are worth.

Technically, neither of the headphones are bluetooth. They are both corded.
What's bluetooth is what the headphones are plugging into. The tiny box.
So you can use any headphones in the world with this Bluetooth box. As long as they have a 3.5mm plug.
Impedance performance may vary of course.

If those don't have a built-in microphone, then I would probably go with something different. The Samsung HS3000 has microphone built into the box and is an excellent choice for high efficiency headphones. Otherwise, it may not put out as much power as other alternatives.

It's the same deal. You can use the Samsung with just about any wired headset on the planet that has 3.5mm jack.

Have you found a solution for this? I have been looking for some time for a similar DIY project. I have found one product from overseas and one in the US. The product overseas is about $270 with shipping and because it is overseas they won't accept returns. The one in the US has a PTT (Push to Talk) button that I would have to try and get around it.
I also found a device that allow you to either transmit or receive but that only gives you a simplex transmission from a headset. You can either talk to the person or listen to them, not both. I have a MultiPoint headset but that requires which device you want to be paired with.
If you already found something, I would love to hear about it.

Same question here, want to make a headset wireless with bluetooth
I have a similar question.
I need a Bluetooth adapter (transceiver?) that supports simultaneous use of mono earphone and microphone. This is surprisingly difficult to find.
It doesn't matter if the earphone and microphone are on the same line. It would be cool if each had a separate 3.5 mm jack, but I think such a Bluetooth adapter does not exist.
As CZ Eddie indicated, there are units with the microphone built into the adapter itself, but I would like to keep the adapter discreet (e.g. not clipped to my shirt). Hence the need for a separate mic line.
The closest I've found is the Blue-Wi Nighthawk (bluewicomm.com/nighthawk-microphone-combo-system). The primary mic is on the unit itself, but an external mic can be added through the 3.5 jack as part of their "Connect & Go" system (bluewicomm.com/connect-go-accessories). What's not clear to me is if that jack can be used simultaneously for both earphone and mic.
PrymeBlu (pryme.com/index.php?l=product_detail&p=2323) looks like a very similar system to Nighthawk.
I'm really surprised this is so hard to find. It looks like 99% of wearable Bluetooth adapters are designed for output only.
Any ideas greatly appreciated!
Yes, I know that his is an old thread, but I need exactly what the HTC BH S600 has. A way to use an external mic for a bluetooth headset. I want to use a directional mic of my choosing for my in car use of bluetooth headset.
I have looked for many hours now, and bought many devices, just to see if they have this function.
I have not seen anywhere that this device is sold anymore on the web.
If anyone finds another device with the same external mic function, please let us know.
Thanks
Yes, me too. I'm still interested in finding the ideal Bluetooth mic.
I'm looking for a simmilar device but on the other end of the bluetooth connection. I would like to connect bluetooth headphones with microphone to it and get wired input and output out of it. I'm looking for such a device for month now Please help.
So, I purchased the Pryme BTH-300, and lo and behold, it WORKS exactly this way. I was able to plug in an external headset with built-in microphone and it recognized and transmitted the audio for phone calls. Works with ModMic as well using a mic/headphone splitter to connect into a SINGLE 3.5mm port. Although I was ecstatic that this worked, the music that played through it was was very poor .
I'm in communication with the Nighthawk folks and will be giving their device a whirl. I also came across a Sony RM-X7BT that has an output and an input for an external microphone. Little concerned because one review stated that ever phone call he had, he had to unplug/plug the mic back in for it to recognize it. But, if you're looking simply for phone calls and mediocre/poor music playback performance is not critical for you, then the Pryme BTH-300 would fit the bill.
I've found "Bluetooth Audio Receiver with Microphone Input"
I've been looking for similar thing, this is old thread but this is pretty common part for all hands-free setups. One can't expect a good audio quality from that because the Bluetooth handsfree/headset profile is not super great.
The device is called "Bluetooth Audio Receiver with Microphone Input (Phone call)" TSA6015 and TSA6016
Without Apt-X: G57B532BBBD83B
With Apt-X: G5BFB502AEA717
it does not have fancy box, but it should work as is.
(I can't post links or images here because I just joined, but the TinyOsShop has nice schematic of the device with microphone and headphones plugged in)
Just registered because I’m having the same problem. I’m blown away this is so difficult to find. Clearly it’s possible to have duplex communication with a dongle since they all seem to have a mic built in. Why I can’t use my own mic is a mystery to me. I’m looking at the TinySine option but it’s sold out everywhere but dedicated websites and I’m kinda sketched out about giving them my money. I’ll keep looking. The HTC isn’t available as far as I can tell and the pryme is too rich for my blood.

Yes you are... first my new aftermarket stereo that has a USB input doesn't read the MP3 files off my S4 because the S4 doesn't have a mass storage option when you connect to USB. My old Droid Razr Maxx did have this function, so the stereo would see my SD card as storage. I don't think it's possible for a stock stereo to read the MP3's through USB if it's not a factory built-in feature.
What you need is an aux input and you can play music through your phone's app.
If your stock stereo doesn't have any type of aux input then you need to get a wired FM modulator. It gives you a powered isolated (no alternator noise while charging) input that connects in-line with your FM antenna. This is your best option for playing music from your phone to your older stock stereo.

With that being said, for $150 I bought a new stereo with Bluetooth, aux, and USB input from Crutchfield and it came with free shipping, adapter kit, wiring harness, and instructions. I can also change songs and Pandora channels while streaming BT from the stereo

I still have my old wired FM modulator hooked up behind my dash, not being used I just forgot to take it out when I put in my new stereo a few weeks ago.
nice radio. my car has a single din, otherwise id go for an in-dash double din that can play dvd's.
this is what came with my car when i bought it. ipod adapter.lolz
http://blitzsafe.com/catalog/audi/audi-/-m-link1-v-1b/prod_111.html
this plugs in to the back of the radio and plays in the stock cd changer mode, not fm frequency.
if used with apple, it would charge wile playing, but not the case when using a 3.5mm headphone jack.
i had the female ipod to 3.5mm adapter so i can use it on my android, but the ipod cable that attaches to the interface broke. so im just looking for other options.
they have this, 8 pin mini din to female rca cable, then i can do male rca to 3.5mm adapter to get my android to work.
http://blitzsafe.com/catalog/universal/8-pin-mini-to-rca/prod_285.html
trying to figure out how i can play music and charge at the same time without using the damn cigarette lighter. i would probably need, if they even make them, and if it would even work, is male rca to 3.5mm jack and male micro usb
OK, AFAIK, playing music and charging at the same time isn't possible with a single standard Micro USB cable. Now, that said, I have a different setup that lets me do this when i drive. I bought the iBolt car dock for Samsung phones. it comes with a split cable that is Micro USB on one end and then splits into regular USB and AUX-Out on the other end. Connect the phone into the dock, then the AUX out into the radio (radio needs and Aux In) and finally the regular USB into the charger port. Also, make sure your Dock settings are turned on in Settings/Accessory.
Works pretty well for me and i have used it with S#m S4, Note 2 and Note 3. Doesn't work with S5 running stock ROM.
I know you were looking for a solution that did not need the cigarette lighter, but I hope this helps.
for the life of me I cant find male rca on one side that splits to a micro usb and 3.5mm headphone jack. I bet thats probably not even made. lol.

does your car stereo have an Aux in for the 3.5 headphones? if so i see tons of micro usb to 3.5mm adapters available for cheap cheap, wont charge your phone though... thought about wireless charging dock for your car? they're around and kinda cheap. i charge my S4 all the time wirelessly even in my truck. also they do have apapter plugs around that you have to mount into your car ?(pulling out the radio and hooking either into the head unit or jumping the wires there. That'll give you both the usb and aux adapter
i just typed into Ebay mhl to RCA and you will get way better results
edit #2 this is from ebay micro usb to audio out, but once again cannot charge (limitations of electronics and stereos)http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-3-5mm-Micro-USB-Aux-Car-Audio-Cable-Adapter-Connector-For-Samsung-S3-S4-HTC-/251577813190?pt=US_Cell_Phone_PDA_Cables_Adapters&hash=item3a9334c8c6

While this isn't really what you're asking for, IIRC Pioneers App Radio double din deck allows this... But it is going to break the bank, and from the reviews I remember reading a couple years ago it's not worth the $. I think they're on their 2nd or 3rd gen of this deck now though so maybe it has gotten better.

I have recently installed a Fusion CA-ML650BT 'Mechless' Head Unit in my 1994 model Mazda Astina. It has no moving parts, simply because it does not have a CD player. Not that it needs one, when I can plug in a USB flash drive full of MP3's, or my iPod, or connect my Galaxy i9505 to it via Bluetooth. I got it on special at an auto parts store for AU$99.00, but their regular retail price is AU$149.00.
What I want to know is, why do you want to keep the car's standard stereo? If you've got an Audi, then why haven't you got a couple of hundred dollars to get yourself a good single-DIN head unit? There is a huge range of single-DIN head units on the market, even those which slide out a large screen for you to watch movies on and also connect to a 'reversing camera' for extra safety.
These days, you don't need a CD player in your car, and I challenge anyone to prove to me why you do. Oh, and don't say, "So I can play DVD's on a 2-DIN screen!", because apps like MX Player and Neutron can stream video via BT into a head unit that accepts such streaming protocols (Alpine, Clarion, JVC and Sony already have such units in their range). The music you've got on compact disc can be converted to MP3 quite easily on a PC, and the top-ranked Android 'media player' apps play almost every standard format of audio and video.
For the latest music, you simply install into your computer a 'Youtube Downloader', then convert the music video you've grabbed to MP3 and you're off and running. Next step, buy a high-capacity Class 10 MicroSD card for your phone - eBay's the cheapest place for them - and fill it with those MP3's. Once you've got that, you 'pair' your phone with the head unit in your car, select 'BT-Audio' as the input source, set the phone's music player to 'Shuffle' and away you go. If you're listening to a song and think, "Urgh, I don't want to hear that now", you simply click the => button on your car stereo and it chooses another at random. With a i9505, you can even play music via Bluetooth while running a navigation app., and the music volume will drop while the GPS guy (or girl) says, "Turn left here!" The other great feature is, if you're driving around (with your phone connected to the stereo via BT) and get a phone call, the head unit will automatically shut off the music, answer the phone for you and you'll hear the caller's voice through your car stereo speakers.
With an increasing number of governments across the world introducing laws restricting mobile phone use whilst driving, these 'hands-free' systems are definitely a good thing, and also worth investing in to lessen the chance of the Police handing you a penalty notice. A bit of shopping around will get you a quality brand head unit at a good price. JVC, Fusion, Clarion, Kenwood, Alpine and Sony are the best manufacturers, they all have 'mechless' head units in their range and eBay is a great place to start your search.
Hope that helps you decide that a move to what is fast becoming standard equipment in vehicles everywhere is worth saving your pennies for...

thanks! I love my audi's lol...have 2 right now and my 5th overall...I figured out what im going to do since we cant play music through our usb let alone charge and play music through usb at the same time. I will eventually get a mechless head unit like Shotty said, they can be had for cheap. I would probably play music through BT. I dont want to use a plug in car charger through the cigarette lighter outlet, so im going to hard wire in a 4post usb outlet under my center console to come out behind the e-brake handle. it will be a 12v to 5v 2amp unit, with 4 usb ports. they are cheap and I can do the wiring myself.
question, how is the quality of the music through BT? is it a digital quality or sub-standard like hooking up to play through my 3.5mm headphone jack?

In my 2009 Ranger I'm running a month old Pioneer head unit that pushes 50W x 4 to the speakers and to a Bazooka tube. the BT dongle/receiver is a class 2 receiver (i didnt realize our phones were class 4 till way later), but i notice a quality issue as compared to just running a wire. yes i still have the wire as back up but my audio profiles through V4A are just a bit different. BT seems more robust and louder with the music while the wire is ok, but the earphone plug can get dirty and sound is compromised.. the wire i seem to have to turn up the volume on the head unit just a little more (although slightly) for siiliar quality, tested without V4A installed as well as installed and with 3 players (GoneMad, PowerAmp, and Playerpro all paid versions). only problem so far i've encountered is i have to keep the dongle plugged into power all the time for it to push into my stereo, but it was $13 off ebay so i knew something might be wrong of course.
I was looking for a Pioneer unit with BT built in but nothing fit my budget at the time (Pioneer is known to fit Ford exactly with no size conflict and great sound)

It's exactly the same output quality as what you'd hear through a very good set of headphones. If you use the Samsung headphones that came with your device, you will hear poor quality sound no matter what it is. BT streams exactly what is being played, without any loss of sound quality, so it then depends on what the music player does to 'enhance' the track, and also the quality of the track itself. A song ripped from a CD as a 128kbps 22100Hz stereo MP3 sounds nowhere near as good as that same song from the same CD ripped as a 24bit 96000Hz *.FLAC. PowerAMP and Neutron play *.FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec) files, and direct stream them in all their glory and pure clarity to the BT receiver. It's then a case of having good quality speakers to reproduce that sound. Every stereo system on the planet is only as good as the speakers they're feeding sound to. You can have a $10,000 receiver+amplifier system but listening to that system through $10 speakers is a waste.

From an auto-electrician's point of view, do that off the cigarette lighter circuit, which will give you a 15A fused loop. Simplest way to do that is to splice in a new female cigarette lighter socket - behind the center console - off the main wiring harness leading to the existing lighter. Then plug an in-car micro USB charger into that female socket, wrap electrical tape around it to insulate and secure the connection, then run the charger lead out from behind the center console near a point where you situate the phone cradle/holder.
All of this is quite simple to do, if you don't go looking for the most complex solution.
All,
Anyone know of any car dock that has both the USB injector and can output audio through USB? I currently have the Samsung Infuse 4G dock and use it with my S3. It is very convenient to dock the phone and slide the usb connector (as opposed to plugging usb and stereo manually) and it puts the phone in dock mode, which triggers my Tasker task to run navigation, play music, etc..
I have my T-Mo Note 4 now but did not find/decide a dock that can hold the phone with the Spigen Neo hybrid case on with the usb injector like the Infuse dock.
Two docks that I looked at and might work..
iBolt xProDock (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00AOCSFYC/ref=ox_sc_sfl_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A1KED7QPKDBUQ7)
iOttie One Touch 2 (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00JRGOKQ8/ref=ox_sc_sfl_title_2?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A2FE6D62A4WM6Q)
Worst case, I would have to buy one of these. Any suggestions? What do you use?
by the way, I did look through all the suggested threads in other forums before creating this one.
Thanks.

I haven't tried my iBolt xProDock, but it *should* work. They actually took forum members here opinion when they were designing it, and designed it to work with the Note 2 / 3 with a bulky otterbox case on, so you won't have any issues with the phone not fitting.
Also, their support is awesome. Part of the dock was rubbing down over time due to wear & tear, they sent me a replacement pretty quick.

I'm not sure the Note 4 has the audio out through usb capability. My Note 2 and 3 worked perfect with the ibolt dock but when I attached the Note 4 the audio would not play through the car speakers. Thanks. I decided to go with the iOttie dock, because of the telescopic arm. I have some unused nfc tags that I hope to use it with Trigger/Tasker to put the phone in car mode. I will post some pictures once I get it in 4-5 days.

I have the same issue with mine. What did you end up doing?
No luck with mine and the Aux audio either with the iBolt dock or the official samsung media dock with the HDMI/usb ports. And with the iBolt the phone has to be off centered due to the position of the volume buttons.
Sad Panda
I'm really bummed, it looks like with the Galaxy S5 and the Note 4 Samsung or Verizon has dropped support for USB dock audio out. I tried an S5-based ROM on my Note 3 and lost dock audio-out capability, and now that I've upgraded to the Verizon Note 4, it's not even an option in settings. I tried Dock Audio from the Play Store which says hopefully "Audio redirected to dock" when you enable it but doesn't change a damn thing.
My only work-around is to use a third-party Bluetooth adapter. I have the Sony SBH52 which sounds great for a Bluetooth adapter, I just plug this into my rear audio-in ports on my MDX, you could probably get a 3.5mm male-to-male audio cable to get this to work with your 3.5mm AUX jack no problem.
I had the same issue, was pretty bummed to find out that the desk dock I was using next to my bed with my s4 wouldn't play audio through the speakers I've got set up. Did a lot of looking around and didn't find any solutions currently, but I did find out something interesting that might explain some of this- It looks like Lollipop will have native support for audio out through USB. Makes me wonder if Samsung didn't include this feature in the s5 or Note 4 because they are waiting for L to drop, and will update touchwiz to handle it at that point? I can't find any confirmation of this anywhere so it's just speculation on my part, but it does seem to make sense. Why put the time and effort into designing a feature that will be coming standard in the next rev of Android anyway?

Not sure why USB Audio Out would not work on the Note 4.
Perhaps the DAC is missing on a dock?

As has been stated in a few other threads, the Note 4 DOES support audio out with the use of an OTG cable and an accompanying DAC/amplifier. What it lacks is support for audio out through a standard micro-USB/auxiliary audio combo cable (like you get with many car docks), or through the aux port on desk docks like the Samsung dock for the previous gen notes and Galaxy S devices. Basically, you can't just drop the Note 4 into a dock that's connected to speakers or to your car's aux in port without adding extra hardware, which was a feature that was present in all of the previous Galaxy devices IIRC (certainly you could do it with the S4 and the Note 3). The S5 also lacks this ability. What this means is that those of us who want to charge the phone and output audio on a single cable are basically out of luck
As I said in my previous post, it looks like Lollipop will be including audio out over USB standard across all devices, so my hope is that Samsung knew this and just decided not to waste time building in a feature that would become present with the 5.0 update anyway. I haven't been able to find any confirmation of this however, and I also haven't been able to find out specifically whether the feature in Lollipop will only support audio out with an OTG cable/DAC or if it also will support audio over micro-USB the way that the S4 and Note 3 did. Guess we'll just have to wait and see!
A discussion was started about this already, the only way to get audio out is an external dac and OTG.
This may sound stupid but, can you help to eloborate more on the dac and otg thighy? Does it mean i can still utilize my ibolt xprodock for prior samsung models with my note4? This will be very interesting. On Lollipop feature, I am getting my hands itchy to test the new firmware already...
So, the answer to your question is both yes and no. You won't be able to use your iBolt with the cable that it came with, but you can get audio out through usb with some extra hardware.
What is needed is a USB OTG (On The Go) cable such as one of these: http://www.amazon.com/s/?ie=UTF8&ke...hvptwo=&hvqmt=b&hvdev=c&ref=pd_sl_qy4kwf7wh_b
and a DAC (Digital to Audio Converter) like one of these: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_n...aps&field-keywords=USB+DAC&rh=i:aps,k:USB+DAC
I haven't personally done this, so I'm really not the best person to completely explain how this all works, but there is tons of info on doing this all around the web. The long and the short of it though is that you'll need the extra hardware to make this work and you won't be able to get the dock recognition that you get from the iBolt cable.
This problem can be solved with a modified kernel?

That's what I've found, you get EITHER charge OR audio out, not both at the same time. :crying: if anyone knows of a product that can do both please let us all know.
My Note 4 plays through USB DAC and charges at the same time (about 800mA) when connected to Samsung Smart Dock (only 2 of 3 usb ports could host dac). It's important to use 2A Samsung charger and short high quality USB cables. All other docks I tried and longer cables and non-samsung chargers made Note 4 ignore DAC audio output. I also wired smart dock with usb dac in my car so internet radio and even more so flacs sound amazing.
This doesn't help with charging, but in terms of Audio clarity, this is one amazing plug using my car's Aux input/Aux cable straight into my Note 4 microusb port: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00FJSEAZ4/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1. It makes my crappy 9 speaker HiFi system in my BMW X5 F15 sound close to the Harmon Kardon sound system - no joke. All the scratchiness at higher volumes is gone. It's all pure clarity.
Note 4 is listed as supported by this cable. Has anyone tried it?

Lolipop solved the problem?
Inviato dal mio SM-N915FY utilizzando Tapatalk
I'm hoping that with the new USB Type-C connector and Power Delivery 2.0, someone will finally make my ideal type of DAC for phone use in the car:
USB input for powering DAC from cigarette lighter adapter (2.1A)
USB input/output for connection to Type-C jack on phone - phone sends digital audio to DAC, and phone simultaneously charges at (relatively) high power thanks to Power Delivery 2.0
3.5mm audio line out - connect to car AUX input
Currently the DACs I find that come closest to meeting this are the FiiO E18 and the Creative Labs E5, but both add a lot of expense and complexity in trying to be everything to everyone (internal battery for portable use, headphone amp with volume control, etc.). Reviews also state that using them with a phone while also charging the phone can be very touchy.
Is anyone else looking for something like this, or have ideas about where it can already be found? I'm not averse to using a portable DAC in the car, but I want the phone charging to be pretty bulletproof. :good:
I use this with my Nexus 5 and a USB OTG Host cable. I have a Nexus 6P on the way, and I'm hoping it will still work with a just a micro-USB to USB-C adapter for the Nexus 6P. It works very well now, with the downside that the phone doesn't charge when used this way . I read that that was a hardware limitation in the Nexus 5. Maybe the Nexus 6P will charge while sending USB audio, I don't know.

I don't know of a product that matches what you described. I have the OPPO HA-2, but in terms of inputs and functionality, it's much the same as the SoundBlaster and FIIO DACs. I don't see how you can charge your phone at the same time you USB output the audio to one of these devices. Using the analog jacks defeats the purpose.
While I think the setup you described would be good, I think we are probably a year or two away from anything like it. I've noticed a trend in the audiophile world of slow adoption of new things such as USB Type-C. If the market proves me wrong, I'm OK with that! I just don't have high expectations for something like this anytime soon.
Also, I think a better alternative would be an aftermarket deck for your car with a USB input for simultaneous charging / USB audio connectivity straight to the sound system. Skip the external DAC and analog headphone jacks all together. Maybe something with Android Auto on it. Again, adoption of Type-C is probably going to be very slow in this product category, but that would be something I'd like to see!
Besides, audio always seems to limited by the weakest link in the chain. Factory car speakers are just terrible, although I'll admit they've gotten better in the last 4 or 5 years. Why go through the pains of setting up an extravagant DAC setup when the speakers won't make it sound any better? Unless you DO have better speakers, in which case, never mind.
May I ask why the 3.5mm analog out from the phone is not sufficient if your car already has an analog input? What is this buying you?
I have an old 2005 Acura TL with a kickass stereo (DVD-A), but no external inputs. I just installed a Grom Audio AND2 that gives me USB stick, Android and a 3.5mm Analog capability. Mine is running in Satellite Radio Emulation mode to give me Song, Album and Artist info in the display.
As newbie, I can not be helpful and add a link but you can Google Grom Audio and click the compare kits link.
The holy grail for me is automotive systems that will take USB or SD cards and actually have as much functionality as a free app on the play store! Most automotive entertainment system developers are so clueless, they should have their balls crushed in a vice and then be fired! The whole naming audio files "01-Artist-Album-Title" came about because automotive systems won't read metadata tags and support playlists.

My 05 TL is also Navy Blue with British Tan leather. Now it has a Grom Audio and I am a fairly happy camper. I used to burn DVD-A discs with about 7 CDs on each and use the "Group" feature. So the 6 disc changer gave me about 42 CDs. BTW, I used Cirlinca DVD-Solo to make and burn DVD Audio Disks.

We have the exact same car

Hi, everyone. Thanks so much for the responses, I really appreciate it. To answer some questions and hopefully clarify things:
Why do this? In my 2007 Honda Civic, I upgraded the speakers just after I bought the car (Boston Acoustics) but left the head unit alone, to get maximum sound quality bang for my buck. I currently have a Galaxy S4, and can take advantage of analog audio out via USB with a special iBolt cable (It operates very similarly to the old 30-pin iPod to analog out cables, if you can picture that).
Via experimentation, I've found that increasing order of sound quality is:
Connection from headphone output to AUX in
Connection from USB analog audio out to AUX in (via iBolt cable)
USB digital out over OTG cable to external DAC, DAC AUX out to car AUX in
Option 3 is far and away the best sound quality. It's a very noticeable difference--as good as playing a CD in the head unit. I will use this option with the Nexus 6P no matter what, but I'd like to be able to charge the phone at the same time, especially on long road trips while using navigation and playing audio. Both the USB Power Delivery specification 2.0 and Android Marshmallow make reference to being able to charge USB host devices, so the missing link is what the best DAC would be to achieve that. It may be that the phone itself will be able to decide whether to draw or output power, which would be ideal if the DAC recognizes and respects that choice.
As for the question about why not get a new head unit? This is an older car, and it's frankly not worth the expense and effort to do that at this time. I'll definitely be looking for Android Auto as a feature in any new car I consider down the road, however.

The GROM kit I bought allows me to play music from USB stick, connect the phone via USB and drive it from the car interface, and aux in. The USB3 kit allows you to add a Bluetooth. I prefer the music on the USB stick. Better connecting a $5 stick than a $500 phone.
The 6P is not USB-PD compliant in that it does not support the PD profiles. 15W (5V/3A) is not a PD spec. It is a Type C spec. Supposedly it uses the control channel in the type C cable/connector but no one knows how far it goes. Some suggest that it will allow reversing power flow. It should allow both data flow and power flow, but it is not a full implementation of USB-PD and is still only USB 2.0 compliant. It should allow charging while connected as long as the host it is plugged into will provide power. At what rate is the big question. Most assume it will drop to legacy 5V 1.5A.
Thanks, dwswager, that's good info. I have a Grom Audio unit in my wife's Mazda, which lacks an AUX in. I'm not 100% happy with it because it tends to lose the ability to get digital audio from the phone, and she needs to reload a config file from a USB stick to reenable that.
I do tend to think that all of this will get worked out in the end. I'm a bit of an edge case, I admit. I do have some good stopgaps now, at least for the non-charging case. That Turtle Beach mini DAC is quite intriguing at only $20. At that price it's worth taking a chance.
I hope we can keep this thread alive as we start to discover what works and what doesn't. November can't get here soon enough!

Assume you have spoken to GROM. Also will assume you flashed the latest firmware update to your wife's unit. The downside on the AUX input is that it uses a proprietary DIN-4 connector and the cable they supply has a male 3.5mm end. So if you want to mount a female 3.5mm jack in the dash you have to use an extra F/F adapter because the jacks are all wired with 3.5mm male ends. They also make an aux cable with both 3.5 and USB female so you can charge and output analog audio at the same time. You also get standard 5V 1.5A via the USB port in the AND2, USB3 and the ipod only number.

In terms of audio quality, the Turtle Beach DAC is a serious improvement over just using the 1/8 in. out of the phone. I will say that the Bass response is HUGE coming out of the Turtle Beach, so I usually eq the bass down a couple notches on the car stereo. That said, it really is an amazing improvement in sound quality for very little investment. (I'm a musician, so I tend to fixate on these things.)
By the way, I bought this cable to extend the reach of my OTG / Host cable,
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HAOKCE8?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00
It's interesting that the seller says USB OTG cables do not support charging.
"This cable is what is known as an OTG, or On-The-Go cable. USB On-The-Go is a specification that allows USB devices such as digital audio players or mobile phones to act as a host, allowing other USB devices like a USB flash drive, digital camera, mouse, or keyboard to be attached to them. These cables do not support charging or syncing of devices. "
bump.
Has anyone found a portable solution to charge phone and offload digital audio to a DAC?
I'm happy to say that the phone works great with my Sony UDA-1 dac/amp (both audio and charging), but it runs off of mains voltage.
I'd even be happy with any single cord solution for simultaneous charging and audio output.
Alright, lemme clear some stuff up here.
For most phones, yes a USB DAC provides better quality than what comes out of the headphone jack and also more volume (doubters can just live on in ignorant bliss :good
On my LG G2, at least, the OTG Y-cable linked earlied charged the phone (although it didn't actually seem to indicate it was charging) and worked with the DAC at the same time
The same cable, when converted from micro USB to USB C and used with the 6P, seems to only be providing charging, the DAC is not working
I will see if I can find anything in the logs or whether there's anything else I can do, maybe bypassing the Y-cable to see if the DAC works at all with the 6P.
Yeeesss yes please, if you or anyone else happens to get a DAC working with the Nexus 6P, please let us all know. I love my 6P, but I definitely miss my setup with my OnePlus One + USB DAC to car AUX...
Is anyone else noticing that audio is downsampled to mono when using Nexus 6p + USB DAC?

No, not at all.
There's also noticeably less noise through the DAC compared to my old Galaxy Note 3.
Which DAC are you using?

also, I installed the trial version of USB Audio Player Pro , and I was able to get stereo sound (though limited to the interface of that app and only local files). So there is something really weird happening software wise . . .
Well I tried a USB C to A converter, and my DAC is working fine with the 6P with that. But no charging at the same time, of course.
