I just upgraded from a galaxy s3 to the new s4. The one thing that's really bothering me is that a cable I've used in my car with the s3 isn't working with the s4.
The cable plugs into the usb jack on the phone, and the other end splits into a usb jack that I plug into my charger, and into an audio jack that goes into the aux. in of my car stereo. With my s3, all I had to do was plug in my phone, and it would go into car dock mode, routing audio out through the cable.
The cable doesn't seem to work with my s4. I already checked the box in settings to play audio over usb when in dock mode, but the phone doesn't go into dock mode when plugged into the cable like the s3 did.
Is my phone defective, or did they change something in the s4? How can I get this to work again? Is there an updated cable I need to buy?
in advance for any help!

the s3 and s4 have different specs in regards to that issue...sorry I dont know the technical terms to help elaborate but no it will not work the same way. I had the same issue with my ibolt dock for the s3 not working with my s4.

I was really disappointed by that! I have searched and been unable to locate a cable that does what the $7 cable I used with my S3 did. I found another *possible* solution. I ordered this from Amazon:
AUDI 99-10 GROM Android USB interface adapter VAGM
This is specific to my car, but they make them for lots of vehicles. If it doesn't work, I'll return it and keep trying. I'll update this thread next week to let you guys know if it works.
In the meantime, if anyone else has a simple, one-cable solution to both charge and play audio from the phone in a car, let me know!
Ibolt now has the ibolt xprodock which works the same way but also gives you the option to mount it to your windshield or dash and use as a gps which I like

I may end up buying that mount and using just the cable from it. I already have the world's best car mount (if anyone wants to know about it, ask me and I'll let you know why I like it so much!)

I just got my S4 and I've been considering the iMagnet mount. I thought that with the simplicity of just "snapping" it onto the mount, and with the problems people seem to be having with combined audio/usb cables, it would be great if I could find a bluetooth audio solution (there's a thread about it out there). It would be so cool to just pop the phone onto the magnet, start the car, and have bluetooth audio flowing through my car without having to attach anything to anything.

You'd still have to plug it in to charge though, if you're using the phone while driving (navigation, pandora, etc.) That's why the solution I had with my S3 was so great. Just pop the phone onto the magnet mount, and plug in the USB. I got audio and charging with just that one cable. I'm looking to do that again with the S4.
Yeah, I know I'd still have to plug it in to charge. Thing is, mostly I just drive to and from work, so my phone is charging while I'm at home and while I'm at work, and even though I have a charger in the car, there's not a HUGE need to always be charging.
My iBolt pro dock works great! I haven't tried my iBolt dock(original), nor have I tried custom roms with either for the s4 ( i'm comming from a S3 running LiquidSmooth. I've had audio out issues with other roms)

Thanks for the feedback! Can I ask you a question about the dock? If I were to order it, would I be able to separate the cable from the dock, and use just the cable? Again, I'm really happy with my iMagnet dock, but I want the cable to function like it used to with my S3.
Thanks!
I'm not sure you meant to quote me? I don't actually have the dock. Maybe you meant to quote cogcaviz24?

Oops, you're right. Thanks! I edited my post.
Yesterday I pulled the cable I was using in my car out, and put back the separate charger and headphone jack so that I can listen to music from my phone in my car. It looks so messy and is a hassle with two cables! Hopefull the Grom Audio adapter I ordered works!
I'll let everyone know.
Bit of a thread revival, but I have this problem in my car as well. I have a possible solution that I'm going to try in the morning, but I think it might have something to do with the fact that the GS4 automatically mounts as a "Media Device", whereas my previous phone would mount as a "USB Mass Storage Device".
I just installed an app that allows the GS4 to mount as a USB storage device, so I'm going to try running that tomorrow and see if that helps. I'll report back soon.

As promised, I wanted to give a review of this device. It works!
It was a bit of a hassle to set up, so if anyone has questions, let me know. It's all hard-wired now though, so I plug my phone into the USB cable, and it charges and passes audio through to the car stereo. The one really nice thing is that with the old USB to USB/ audio splitter that I had, there was some hiss/background noise. This new setup has none of that. It sounds great!
Again, if anyone orders one, let me know and I'll give you some pointers. The instructions weren't great, and it was a hassle to get it working.

Just click on "Get your phone". The price is $45. Overnight shipping with Fedex is $10, but Ground is free. Tax came out to a little over $3 for me.
Well that was a good catch. Nice :}
Awesome, can't wait!
Are you kidding me? The dock won't have rca built into it?
Instead an adapter is included? what the balls....
Why would they put a headphone jack on a dock for something that already has a headphone jack?
This is gonna be like the home dock for the droid. A glorified usb cable.
so two people can listen to music after all it is a social friendly phone!
The point to a dock is once you put it in you are done. Think of a laptop dock. Sure your laptop has an ethernet port, power port, and usb but it's alot easier to just put it in the dock and go.
But, unless the dock does video I probably won't be getting it. The car dock I'll probably get though.
an audio jack would be awesome and something i was looking for for the G1 originally, but no..., i want to charge the phone and at the same time listen to the music on it.
yes, Nexus One has a separate audio jack on top, but who wants to have a Nexus One sitting in the cradle and a cable goes out of its top all over the table to the speakers? cable out of cradle to speakers
perfect

+1 man... I want to be able to plug it into my stereo to stream Pandora, etc., or to put it on my nightstand and use my phone as my alarm clock/weather center/news station.
I thought about waiting for the dock but decided to buy a generic mount(kensington). Partly because I already have a bluetooth speaker to put in my car that can also go over fm. Also judging by the picture I won't get horizontal video recording, only vertical. Seeing that I like to record my car trips, this doesn't help me any.
Being that google would have to make this dock for everyones car I think the device will hook up to the phone and transmit itself to the car via bluetooth or FM, (not everyone's car has bluetooth or a usb connection) and just power off the cars lighter, everything will go over the cars speaker system unless the dock has a speaker in it(doubt it). And I wouldn't put my trust into the phones speaker while its facing the windshield. Also I don't like talking to someone if the dock will be transmitting over FM, that means anyone else listening on the station you are using will be listening in on you. That of course is assuming the dock doesn't have a speaker itself.
edit. Just realized this is for the Desktop Dock, not the car dock. D'oh
Ive just noticed the dock on sale at www.google.com/phone.
$45! Im in the UK and was going to buy it, but they want another $30 for delivery, might just wait for the car dock so I can order both and save on postage!

It does stream music via bluetooth. When you first use the dock, it automatically pairs with your phone. If you have the phone hooked up to your stereo, it streams music via bluetooth to the dock, and into the stereo.
I just checked the User Guide pdf that you can download by clicking "Learn More" under the Dock on the purchase page. See link below:
http://www.google.com/googlephone/nexusone-desktopdock.pdf
Edit: Anyone think the price will come down on this at all? I was kind of hoping for a landscape dock, but I'm digging this.
I don't think the price (which is not bad) will come down anytime soon from google. Also, would like a landscape dock but this does look very cool
I, for one, am very pissed the way the bluetooth is setup in the dock. When people first caught wind of the fcc filings for the dock and realized the dock had bluetooth, people were confused. It was thought that the dock would connect to a bluetooth stereo of sort, that way you can just slip it in and it would all work.
I have a little bluetooth stereo and this situation would be ideal, but that's not the case...
I'm just having a tough time understanding how this is supposed to work? I have to manually connect to my bluetooth stereo every time I want to use it now, I don't really want my phone connected to my dock when it's not in it. The user guide doesn't really specify exactly how this is going to work. Can someone who gets this confirm it?
omg do want! Gotta wait to get it imported to Aus though :/ c'mon eBay!

Why do you need to connect your dock to a stereo via bluetooth if you can do that right from your phone? And not everybody have wireless audio at home. So I think it's a good idea when the dock is connected to your home stereo (even via wires) and you streaming your music wirelessly to the speakers through the dock.
I am also interested can I pair this dock and my laptop, so that I can stream wireless music not only from the phone, but from laptop too?
Dock doesnt do data either.
Weird little dock. Was hoping for a landscape model. Dont like this.
Hey, check this out... I've had this for a while, but today I found this datasheet on the net today. http://www.mediafire.com/?d4e21efhuktctcb
This is the datasheet for our USB switch. Well, very similiar. You see, Samsung asked Fairchild semiconductors to build them a chip. The result was the FSA9480. This is the datasheet for the FSA9280.. They're functionally the same chip.
This datasheet contains plans to build a music dock!

This chip is located inside your phone. Those wires referenced above are your USB port. You can build this with resistors and switches
Nice! That would definitely beat using an aux in, especially in the car!
The microphone isn't hooked up to the USB port in the Galaxy S phones, also I don't think the switch resistors will do anything, because the device driver doesn't recognize them as far as I know.
The alternatives are to use a 365K resistor between ID and ground for Home Dock mode, or a 619K resistor for Car Dock mode. The speaker connections are the same and you can connect +5V to pin 1 for charging.
See this thread for info about enabling the audio output, and issues with Car Dock audio output in Gingerbread.
Anyone try the switch resistors? I'd like to build one but don't want to waste the time if it won't work.

I ordered some usb cables to hack up to enable Home/Car Dock and also use audio over usb. I was dreaming on my way home the other day how I would love hard buttons to changes songs etc on the cappy.
But I have the exact same concerns as Beano, if the driver/app doesn't know what to do with the resistance its receiving then this is pretty useless.
So do any of the Dev's know if this type of thing is possible or if they car add the necessary code to make it work? I have no trouble building the controller but need more info on the chances of working.

There is a stock car dock for the captivate with media buttons. Its apparently not supported with gt-i9010 because an Andromeda3 user complained about it. We base Andromeda off giorgio Armani captivate firmware.
Are the resistor switches (s1 through s12) recognized by anything (music app or otherwise)? It would be cool to make a car/desk dock that you could advance tracks, play/pause, etc. by switching different resistors.
Has anyone tried these switches with a music app to see if they do anything? I would like to make a car dock with momentary switches for the resistors, but didn't want to spend time on something if the software isn't there (I'm a tinkerer, so I don't have the expertise to solve anything too complex).
Thanks for the info posted here!

Bigger question is the charging issue. On CM9 Nightly 11, I have working Dock Audio, however, the phone will not enter in to "high charge" mode. That is to say, I'm still losing battery power when I have music playing, Google Nav running and bluetooth off. I thought that simply adding the 619K Ohm to pins 4 and 5 would cause the phone to charge at it's full rate of 750mA. Or is it something that TouchWiz enables?

I have already tried shorting out D+ and D- on the microUSB side while on my 1A USB car adapter. That did not work either. I got the same rate of battery loss as on this car dock cable. I guess, that's another reason to look at the actual lighter plug in the Tahoe to see if it's putting out the necessary amperage.
And as far as getting the buttons to work, I think that's a no-go. An app would need to know to monitor for those particular signals. I'm not a programmer at all.

All, I am with iBOLT. The HTC One S is the same Dock as the one for the X, that is correct. It works perfect but there's a 3-4 mm open space once inserted on the left side as the S is smaller then the X. The functionality is the same, it starts the car mode with the very good HTC car dock application but we are hearing that many are using CarHome Ultra as well since this app has more flexibility, although possible not as nice looking.
With regards to Aux-out it is correct that this Dock does not work like the iBOLT Galaxy S III Dock with integrated charging/aux-out from the microUSB cable. This is because there's no technical way of taking the aux out from the microUSB connection on the HTC platform. We wish it was since this feature has been incredibly popular on the S III. If your car-stereo features a 3.5 mm jack I would recommend the HTC Bluetooth dongle for Streaming Audio unless it can be done over the BT system.
Hope these comments helps...

Yes, the iBOLT Dock can be charged from your USB in your car. You just have to have a microUSB to USB cord, which comes with any car charger that separates the cord from 12 volt charging plug itself.

Yes, the Dock will work if you connect an aux-out cable from the phone itself to your 3.5 mm jack on the car-stereo. This will transfer all sounds from applications, including the ring signal for incoming phone calls to the car-speakers. However, you must pair and use a Bluetooth device (headset, speaker phone, built-in system etc.) for making and receiving phone calls. If you are not connecting to a Bluetooth device for phone calls the audio will be routed to the car-stereo but as there is no microphone on the aux cable so the other party will not be able to hear you. Hope this makes sense?

Anyone know of a desk dock that can fit the Photon Q with a case on it (particularly the Otterbox Commuter)? The Otterbox case is thick, so probably not but I'm hoping anyway...
AW: Droid 3 desk dock is compatible
Is the one from atrix compatible with the Q?
Answering my question:
The one from atrix do NOT work!

my phq works fine with usb-otg adapter, i can read some usb flash disk that i have.
but as far as i know, when usb-otg adapter connected, the phone will give voltage/power to the USB device.
at this point i have doubt about phq + the multimedia dock.
reason being is the dock provide USB connection and at the same time (I assume) it provide charging power to the phone.
this is conflicting as if the USB port means to connect to other devices (keyboard/mouse) as USB-OTG, then at the same time phone try to give power + get power from the charger. this may damage the phone.
but i may be wrong as i don't have the dock.
the dock mentioned by the OP is quite cheap on [email protected], i think i'll grab one. thx for sharing

I'm using StickMount from Chainfire to mount flash disks.
Only my high speed USB3.0 stick doesn't work.

could u plz be specific why it's not working, size problem? cuz the img CornholioGSM posted seems just like atrix dock........just thinking about to grab one on ebay
Hi!
I thought so myself. After buying one from ebay I can say it dose NOT fit. First: the hdmi pin on the dock is turned by 180 degrees.
After fixing that by removeing the complete hdmi pin from dock I could test the fit. The Q is to large for the dock. It will fit uneaven if tried with serious force. I did not want to damage the usb port on my q for a worse 'fitting' dock...

I know its been over a half a year since you asked and no one replied but I figured maybe you would still appreciate a response. There seem to be two dock modes: Desk (what you call bedside) and Car. Motorola made an official dock for this phone which put it into car mode however it seemed to have been pretty limitedly available when it was out and is now discontinued; thanks for abandoning us Moto. I cant even seem to find it listed on amazon used which is annoying as I have one I want to sell off (hint hint).
It has a special USB cable that goes with it that has an audio out cable down at the end where it plugs into the car charger so you dont have to plug a headphone cable into your phone to get audio out to your stereo, worked quite well when my phone was still alive.
I also have one of these droid 3 desk docks mentioned here that I need to find a good home for now.

Do you still have the dock for sale?
All,
Anyone know of any car dock that has both the USB injector and can output audio through USB? I currently have the Samsung Infuse 4G dock and use it with my S3. It is very convenient to dock the phone and slide the usb connector (as opposed to plugging usb and stereo manually) and it puts the phone in dock mode, which triggers my Tasker task to run navigation, play music, etc..
I have my T-Mo Note 4 now but did not find/decide a dock that can hold the phone with the Spigen Neo hybrid case on with the usb injector like the Infuse dock.
Two docks that I looked at and might work..
iBolt xProDock (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00AOCSFYC/ref=ox_sc_sfl_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A1KED7QPKDBUQ7)
iOttie One Touch 2 (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00JRGOKQ8/ref=ox_sc_sfl_title_2?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A2FE6D62A4WM6Q)
Worst case, I would have to buy one of these. Any suggestions? What do you use?
by the way, I did look through all the suggested threads in other forums before creating this one.
Thanks.

I haven't tried my iBolt xProDock, but it *should* work. They actually took forum members here opinion when they were designing it, and designed it to work with the Note 2 / 3 with a bulky otterbox case on, so you won't have any issues with the phone not fitting.
Also, their support is awesome. Part of the dock was rubbing down over time due to wear & tear, they sent me a replacement pretty quick.

I'm not sure the Note 4 has the audio out through usb capability. My Note 2 and 3 worked perfect with the ibolt dock but when I attached the Note 4 the audio would not play through the car speakers. The option to switch the audio mode in the Accessories menu is not there anymore. I tried to use tasker to switch to external speakers but no luck.

Thanks. I decided to go with the iOttie dock, because of the telescopic arm. I have some unused nfc tags that I hope to use it with Trigger/Tasker to put the phone in car mode. I will post some pictures once I get it in 4-5 days.

I have the same issue with mine. What did you end up doing?
No luck with mine and the Aux audio either with the iBolt dock or the official samsung media dock with the HDMI/usb ports. And with the iBolt the phone has to be off centered due to the position of the volume buttons.
Sad Panda
I'm really bummed, it looks like with the Galaxy S5 and the Note 4 Samsung or Verizon has dropped support for USB dock audio out. I tried an S5-based ROM on my Note 3 and lost dock audio-out capability, and now that I've upgraded to the Verizon Note 4, it's not even an option in settings. I tried Dock Audio from the Play Store which says hopefully "Audio redirected to dock" when you enable it but doesn't change a damn thing.
My only work-around is to use a third-party Bluetooth adapter. I have the Sony SBH52 which sounds great for a Bluetooth adapter, I just plug this into my rear audio-in ports on my MDX, you could probably get a 3.5mm male-to-male audio cable to get this to work with your 3.5mm AUX jack no problem.
I had the same issue, was pretty bummed to find out that the desk dock I was using next to my bed with my s4 wouldn't play audio through the speakers I've got set up. Did a lot of looking around and didn't find any solutions currently, but I did find out something interesting that might explain some of this- It looks like Lollipop will have native support for audio out through USB. Makes me wonder if Samsung didn't include this feature in the s5 or Note 4 because they are waiting for L to drop, and will update touchwiz to handle it at that point? I can't find any confirmation of this anywhere so it's just speculation on my part, but it does seem to make sense. Why put the time and effort into designing a feature that will be coming standard in the next rev of Android anyway?

I'm using a Fiio Kunlun E-18 Audio Amplifier and Digital Audio Converter without issue on both the Galaxy S4 and the Note 4.

Not sure why USB Audio Out would not work on the Note 4.
Perhaps the DAC is missing on a dock?

As has been stated in a few other threads, the Note 4 DOES support audio out with the use of an OTG cable and an accompanying DAC/amplifier. What it lacks is support for audio out through a standard micro-USB/auxiliary audio combo cable (like you get with many car docks), or through the aux port on desk docks like the Samsung dock for the previous gen notes and Galaxy S devices. Basically, you can't just drop the Note 4 into a dock that's connected to speakers or to your car's aux in port without adding extra hardware, which was a feature that was present in all of the previous Galaxy devices IIRC (certainly you could do it with the S4 and the Note 3). The S5 also lacks this ability. What this means is that those of us who want to charge the phone and output audio on a single cable are basically out of luck
As I said in my previous post, it looks like Lollipop will be including audio out over USB standard across all devices, so my hope is that Samsung knew this and just decided not to waste time building in a feature that would become present with the 5.0 update anyway. I haven't been able to find any confirmation of this however, and I also haven't been able to find out specifically whether the feature in Lollipop will only support audio out with an OTG cable/DAC or if it also will support audio over micro-USB the way that the S4 and Note 3 did. Guess we'll just have to wait and see!
A discussion was started about this already, the only way to get audio out is an external dac and OTG.
This may sound stupid but, can you help to eloborate more on the dac and otg thighy? Does it mean i can still utilize my ibolt xprodock for prior samsung models with my note4? This will be very interesting. On Lollipop feature, I am getting my hands itchy to test the new firmware already...
So, the answer to your question is both yes and no. You won't be able to use your iBolt with the cable that it came with, but you can get audio out through usb with some extra hardware.
What is needed is a USB OTG (On The Go) cable such as one of these: http://www.amazon.com/s/?ie=UTF8&ke...hvptwo=&hvqmt=b&hvdev=c&ref=pd_sl_qy4kwf7wh_b
and a DAC (Digital to Audio Converter) like one of these: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_n...aps&field-keywords=USB+DAC&rh=i:aps,k:USB+DAC
I haven't personally done this, so I'm really not the best person to completely explain how this all works, but there is tons of info on doing this all around the web. The long and the short of it though is that you'll need the extra hardware to make this work and you won't be able to get the dock recognition that you get from the iBolt cable.
This problem can be solved with a modified kernel?

So. It can be done? Will I be able to charge the phone meanwhile?
Sorry. Read the full post and noticed that we can't have both.
It's either audio through otg or charging. [emoji30] [emoji31]

That's what I've found, you get EITHER charge OR audio out, not both at the same time. :crying: if anyone knows of a product that can do both please let us all know.
My Note 4 plays through USB DAC and charges at the same time (about 800mA) when connected to Samsung Smart Dock (only 2 of 3 usb ports could host dac). It's important to use 2A Samsung charger and short high quality USB cables. All other docks I tried and longer cables and non-samsung chargers made Note 4 ignore DAC audio output. I also wired smart dock with usb dac in my car so internet radio and even more so flacs sound amazing.
This doesn't help with charging, but in terms of Audio clarity, this is one amazing plug using my car's Aux input/Aux cable straight into my Note 4 microusb port: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00FJSEAZ4/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1. It makes my crappy 9 speaker HiFi system in my BMW X5 F15 sound close to the Harmon Kardon sound system - no joke. All the scratchiness at higher volumes is gone. It's all pure clarity.
Note 4 is listed as supported by this cable. Has anyone tried it?
