Just wondered if there was a way in which I could force an update? I've had to revert back to stock firmware and am currently on 2.3.1. Ive tried the CHECKIN method but nothing happened. Any suggestions guys?
you can manually push the update through recovery located here:

Nope..
Do look for the thread titled '2.3.3 link' though. It's rather easy to apply it manually.

Thanks guys
I have done that method before but I think it screwed up my mms hence I would rather receive it OTA just incase. Are they still pushing out the 2.3.2 update for us that are yet to receive 2.3.3?

Probably not. They would probably send you the version that goes from whatever you're on to 2.3.3 since the Android 2.3.3 URL thread has like three different versions.
The alternative is to flash a custom ROM such as CM7, Axura, GingerS, MoDaCo which features 2.3.3 (unsure about GingerS)
I still don't get the 2.3.3 OTA either. Since I had some problem when I was using N1 and tried to update it manually, I decide to wait for OTA in my NS. I am curious why it can take so long time to push out an OTA?
Two reasons: network strain and damage control in the event of Problems.
I'm waiting for the OTA to come through to my other halves new NS which we got yesterday to update from 2.3.1 to either 2.3.2 or better still 2.3.3 but, guess it ain't happening any time soon :-(

Force update in post #2 that I linked. This is the same file you would get from the OTA. All the OTA does is bring a dialog box saying its available for you and it goes to that link. The link was achieved using aLogCat. It's directly from *.google.com

how to force update
Picked up my NS on saturday (so it should be running 2.3.1 right?) Anyway when I go into settings-about phone-system update it says i have latest version. I am fairly confident this is not so. So how do I force update to my NS?

Search for the thread titled '2.3.3 link' and do it manually or wait until you get it pushed down to you. There it's no way to force it OTA (over-the-air)

Go to development and use the 2.3.3 restore with root. Real easy

No offense to the OP, but I find it very odd that people buy a "pure Google experience" android device then manage to forget to use Google.

Hi,
is it possible to block the OTA updates on the Nexus S?
I have stock Gingerbread 2.3.6 and would like to keep it for a good while until all the teething problems of ICS are ironed out.
Cheers
I thought when the update is there, you can accept it or cancel. So then you cancel it, and wait for the next OTA

Try the FOTAkill app from the market. It's supposed to block ota's.
even you finish dl the OTA , you can choose not to install the ota , but the ota will still in your sd part.

Doh! It used to be, but I've noticed that some apps can't be accessed since upgrading to 4.0.3. Probably need to use Market Enabler to find FOTAkill.
I bought a new nexus s yesterday. It is currently working on android 2.3.3
there's no notification for any updates yet. and the system updates show that the software is "up to date". What should i do?? Is something wrong with the phone if it isn't showing any notifications for updates?? kindly respond soon =)
Try turning on wi-fi and manually checkin by dialing *#*#2432546#*#*

But 2.3.3 isn't the latest update. Shouldn't the phone be giving me notifications to update to the latest available version? like 2.3.6 maybe?
Simply root your phone and choose any rom you like. No need to wait for an update.
I bought my phone 26the December, I kept checking for update never got one then I read post it will only update to latest one since they have stopped it temporary u will either have to root/ do it manually or just wait

The update strategy of google is really confusing :
No dates, no indication, no explanations why they stopped OTA. The most surprising thing to me is : why stopping 2.3.6 OTA while the problem is about the 4.0.3 version?
Its for a couple of days m8 most people would be hacked of if they had to update there fine every to minutes

easiest solution, and you dont have to wait on anybody.. update manually. there are links to all the android versions, available to the nexus s, posted here in xda. and you dont need root to update an official stock rom with an official stock rom.

Updating manually will solve your problem. Just make sure that the model of is same as your Nexus S since there's 3 types of Nexus S and they all use different radio...

You mean, i doswnload official OTA ICS and flash via recovery, no need to unlock a bootloader?
Sent from my GT-I5800
No need to unlock bootloader if you're flashing stock ROM
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
If you want to go stock(no root, no unlocked bootloader, no custom recovery) wouldn't recommend updating to ICS OTA, since there is that battery drain bug, that has yet to be fixed.
Also downgrading back to GB is quite tricky, if not imposible without unlocking the phone.
there's no bug, they just paused it, you can download it from here and just rename it and flash through the stock recovery!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1063664
But why to flash if there is a battery bug for most of people. You got to be lucky.
Sent from my GT-I5800
I have two 9020t updated to 4.0.3 and both are battery bug-free. I had the official update OTA on one and manual update in the other ( missed the OTA because I was tinkering with the first one). I jumped from 2.3.3 to 4.0.3 when I got the OTA
I haven't had a problem

There's a bit more battery consumption, but nothing to worry about...
I just checked through software update and it said that new update is available but download servers are busy. Once they are available your phone will automatically check for update again.
Anyone else see this?

Thats what im thinking, and maybe now we can haz a la3 radio that doesnt drop data every 2 seconds
I just did a test, I'm on stock 2.3.6, baseband UCLA3, Kernel 2.6.35.11, and I'm getting a "Software is up to date". So I'm not sure what you are seeing. See if you can reach your local AT&T store and see what they say. Mine here seem to know what is going on (generally speaking) and have been right on when something is being pushed and such.
Just saying...
P.S. I've never had the issue with data dropping or anything like that and I've been on UCLA3 since the initial push OTA before being pulled.
I just tried it and I am on 2.3.5 and it said I was up to date. But I am also unrooted on a stock nandroid backup. My baseband is still the UCLA from 2.3.6

I had the same issue. Go to Wifi and update that way. You MAY have to kick the date on the phone forward a couple days, but that will trick the updating to run again (give that you can only update once every 24 hours or so). This is what happened with mine. I'd be on UCLA3 with 2.3.5 Android.
Just see how that goes by changing the date a couple days ahead and updating while connected to Wifi. This is the exact same process as the guys in my local store did when it was only partially updated. If that doesn't work, talk to a tech in the store (corporate store!!), they might have a trick or a way to do it over the computer.
Just my $0.02 from personal experience...

you dont have to change the date, just clear the DATA form the Device Management App in manage ALL applications and you are good to go.
Anyone else receive the OTA notification or manually check and be able to install this? Mine says its up to date... I had the 2.3.6 update fail several times and could not receive the last update... Stock 2.3.5.

I'm pretty sure that it gives the "Update available but servers are busy" message whenever it cannot contact the server. I've saw this once when there definitely was NOT an update available.

Its the same 2.3.6 update that they keep rolling out in waves.
I have the stock GB but rooted with cwm. I got rid of all the att crap with root installer. I took the OTA 'update' and after restart it reported the update failed. Also corrupted my encrypted sd card. dunno why. it won't 'continue update' as grayed out. Especially pissed now as OPs are saying this isn't even the (long awaited) ICS update.
My advice: ignore this update.
I'm waiting for a stable ICS from Samsung to show up on xda; I'll flash that.

Don't be so negative guys. They roll out OTA really slowly. Sometime over a month or two. This might be real.
