[Q] Issue-su-2.3.1-bin-signed.zip - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

PROBLEM RESOLVED...Running PRIMORDIAL! v3.1...very excited...thanks to Ayman and RMXO
Hi Friends...
I successfully rooted my Asus Transformer and got the Superuser icon on my Trans...now when I TAP it..it opens and prompts.."New version of su"...There is new version of the su binary available .Press OK to attempt to install it automatically....when hit OK....goes to..."Automatic update failed"...An error occurred and su was not updated. A zip file (su-2.3.1-bin-signed.zip) has been placed on your sdcard, please reboot into recovery mode and flash it to update your su binary.
How do we do this?
I think I can get to recovery mode...Power down+Voume down..and then volup...right?..
But then have no clue what to do...
Any one can guide me as to what to do...
I have Superuser--but I do not have any APPS at all...No apps in list...Stumped.
I want to download the APPS...and also UPDATE to PRIME! v1.3r2...How do I do that?
I can download apps from the market..but thats not from Superuser...
I am new to Android and first time with this...
Also, once I root...How do I FLASH it with custom ROM and which ones are the LATEST?
How do I get the best of my Transformer..bet performance and better battery usage....
Please advice....Thanks
I appreciate your help with all of my questions...
Thanks,
Regards
Misfitz

Are you actually rooted or did you just push the superuser.apk over?

Do you have Clockworkmod recovery installed? When you turn on the TF with volumedown+power and then hit volume up you should be in Clockworkmod recovery. If so, scroll down to Install ZIP on SD Card using the volume down button and then hit the power button. Select "su-2.3.1-bin-signed.zip" and hit the power button and flash it.
That is all

Well I am having this same problem. I DO have ROOT access and can get into CWR. I did what you instructed but after tying to install "su-2.3.1-bin-signed.zip" it says
"Installing: SDCARD:su-2.3.1-bin-signed.zip"
"Finding update package...
Opening update package...
E:Can't open /sdcard/su-2.3.1-bin-signed.zip
(bad)
Instalation aborted."
I have retried over and over and just get the same outcome. Any help would be aprecciated!!! I want to be able to back up with Titanium BU before flashing a ROM wut I can't till it gets SU working.

im having the same problem on my g2x please help!!!

UPDATE!
Solved it by going into settings > applications > manage applications > running > cached > superuser > stop

you did it wrong. you DO NOT choose apply update from sd card. If you are doing a kernel, or mod "theme" you are to choose install zip from sd card, then browse to the directory where the file resides.

ok did what you said but it did the same thing some white text scrolls real fast and thats it does that mean the kernal was flashed successfully? Also this site says that both "apply from update from sd card" and "install zip from sd card" are both used for flashing kernels and etc.., heres the link.

You did install it right. If you got the orange recovery then yes you got it working. That's all you needed to do. You don't need to do anything further. Just don't delete the update.zip from your sdcard. You can download Kernels or Theme's or Roms now using "install zip from sdcard".
You don't need to do "install zip from sdcard" with update.zip. That zip is already accessed when you hit reinstall packages when your in normal recovery.

+ 1 but to answer your question, when flashing something, below is a log of what CWM is doing. When it finishes, it will say installation successful.
I see what you were referencing, but I only follow the directions in the OP for the things that i am trying to do. I know its talking about CWM but what i read in our SGS4G forums is 100% accurate and proven to work. stick to the directions in here and you'll be fine. venture off and you might have some issues.

Ok now i get it,thanks man im a total noob, lol.
This is good news for us SGS4G owners. This phone has so much potential. Finally we've been shown some love. 1 Trillion Bajillion thanks to Krylon360 & DrHonk. I do have one question which may be noobish.
So I installed CWM, and my phone is back up and running. If I press the power button, am I supposed to see the longer list off options this time, such as Reboot, Recovery, Download, etc? Or am I supposed to use the Volume + Power button method?

From leaked 3.1 US to 3.0 WW?? Possible?

Hi guys. Well lol.. noobs just shouldnt play. =)
I was on WW 8.2.3.13 and updated to US 3.1. Now im having some problems with it. Been freezing and stuff.
So.. is it possible in anyway to go back to ww version so i can get th OTA version when it comes?
Found a link with the WW firmware. Tried to use it and boot with volume down but it wont work.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1090291
what i had to do was download the 8239 update from asus put it in microsd/asus/update then i hade to rename the file to ww_epad-user-8.4.4.5.zip. you should see update avaliable in the bottom right hand corner of the taskbar then select update. Then ur tf should do the rest itself.
Worked great! thanx =)
I tried this, it isnt offering me an update, no exclamation mark either

yes I have put it there. Wont it need to be called us to fool it I can put it over the top? I need to return to WW stock rom. Will this unroot it and remove CWM too?
I am on PRIMORDIAL v3.1 btw
Hi guys!
Ok, place the zip file on microsd card. Then turn the transformer off.
Hold power and volume down until it boots up and you see the small text.
Now hurry and press volume upp right away. That seem to force it to start the firmware. I used the ww epad 8.2.3.13.
I dont know if its ok when your rooted tho..

Does anyone have the blob from the leaked 3.1, as the file has been pulled off the forums
thanks
Hello,
It doesn't work for me, is there any other thing to do ?
What i've done :
1) Make a folder called ASUS/Update from the root of your microSD card
2) Drop the .zip in there, rename to 'US_epad-user-8.4.4.5.zip'
3) If you're doing this on the Transformer itself, eject and remount the SD card. If on your PC, just plug the card in.
4) Click the update notification, it'll start the updater on it's own.
Got the notification, started it but got the warning when reboot itself in recovery, no update.

To quote meself. Try the above. I used 8.2.3.13 tho.
Do I have to rename it or anything else ?
Hi, i didnt do that. Just booted with power and volume down. Then as soon as the small text appear on left side i pressed volume up. That way it flashes it right away.
Ok, someone on a french forum find the solution that worked for me !
Download the last WW update on the Asus Website
Open the .zip file, in the ASUS/Update folder there will be another .zip file
Rename it EP101_SDUPDATE.zip and put it to the root of your external microSDcard
Boot in recovery (volume down and power) and then press volume up when it's asked in the upper left corner.
Let the update apply.
Once it boot, power off your tab, boot again in recovery, wait to have the wipe menu, confirme to wipe your device, let it wipe and reboot and that's ok !

Sounds like you were using the wrong .zip file to begin with. There were a few going around. One was a zip with a zip in it, which you need to do what you did, another simply was that inner zip file. If you named the inner zip to US_epad-user-8.4.4.5.zip and followed the directions as posted previously it probably would've worked as well. Just looks like you had one copy of the zip and the instructions for the other
Was on TW_epad_user_8239 and updated to the leak 3.1 with US firmware.
managed to downgrade (all the way back to TW_epad_user_82313) and TF auto prompt me upgrade to TW_epad_user_8239 (with numerous reset)
However, there are many android.process* crashes...

Hi,
I am looking at that thread too, the batch thread for 3.2 root. I am very very new to this, never rooted anything and wanting to. the thing I am worried about is the faq seem to have not been updated in the bat file, at least it looks lke that to me. it just makes it more confusing
Is this the order I should do this (I have a stock unrooted 3.2 (ota did the 3.2 upgrade) and I am curious about the steps after drivers installed, adb is talking to my tf, and I am in APX mode
1. press 6 Check if ADB is working
2. Press 3 to back up my stock boot.img and recover.img ?
3. press 9 to install "Install root US and/or Recovery 8.6.5.6 (HC3.2) beta"
4. press 7 to install superuser
5. press 8 to install busy box via ADB
6. then reboot?
Please confirm this is correct for me?
thank you for any help,
John

I believe you will have to reboot before you install superuser and busybox. They won't install while you are in APX mode. At least that was the case for me. I let everything finish in APX mode, rebooted, pushed SU and BB via ADB, and rebooted again.
You may have already known this but I got stuck for a bit because it never said to reboot before you push SU & BB.
Will not let me Unzip the file. redownloaded, reset my computer. I can unzip other files. not this one. Any ideas?

this is a diff patch form 1.33 to 1.52. The easy way is :
- make a nandroid backup
- apply original 1.33 firmware
- reboot to recovery (so the original and not the custom) then choose to apply the OTA zip
- install custom recovery
- root the chacha
- restore only data from your nandroid backup
bah, of course... why didn't I even think of it... Tried every possible combination except the one above... feeling like a noob ^_^ Thanks man.
Quick info.
Android version: 2.3.5
HTC Sense: 2.1
Software version: 1.52.401.1
I have a default S-ON European device, but original recovery is not reading the update.zip straight into recovery I get:
E: can't find /cache/recovery/command
Pressing power on apply update I get:
-- Invalid operation
Success in Reboot ........
Connecting via Wifi or Edge and checking for updates is not getting anything either, even though the phone is on 1.33.401.1 and completely stock
Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks a lot for your reply, however, I am still stuck.
OK more details here (THE DEVICE IS STOCK and S-ON):
- Pressed vol- while power up
- got the searching for PH06IMG.zip and then a menu
- I chose recovery
- I see green sync arrows
- Then I see red exclamation with phone
- Pressed vol+ and power
- get E: can't find, and a menu in upper area of screen
- if I hold vol+ and click power I get back to red exclamation screen
- if I select Apply update from sdcard, I get Invalid operation and reboot

What sw version are you running right now? You do have 1.33 right?

Yes I have 1.33.401.1, I use a Mac and Linux so when I updated from 1.18 to 1.33 I had to get the rom.zip from the RUU and placed it on the sdcard as PH06IMG.zip it was the same SD Card but will still try a smaller SD Card to avoid SDHC issues tonight at home.
I am not sure if an RUU for 1.52.401.1 will be available or if HTC will allow the phone to find the update any time soon because the files have a date stamp of 7th October 2011 or this maybe a leak actually. Just wondering about internal space and unlocked bootloader as of now, because use data2sd will require root which I don't have and can barely install anything on this phone even though I like the form factor more than my DesireZ (keyboard is a must for me).
Try to make on your SD card a directory named as "download" and put the file there. There is a chance that after the next upgrade search you will be prompted to install it from SD.

thanks for the tip, though no cigar, I guess it needs to get information from the server that it should download / use previous download for verification.

I really dislike (hate) market v3. It runs laggy, downloads a whole bunch of huge images (already takes 8MB of space) and some pages will timeout (from download page to accept&download).
I have rooted 1.33 firmware on my chacha, do I still need to apply a original one to update this OTA?
Thanks
btw, what's the difference between 1.52 and 1.33?

If you have CWM then install original 1.33. If not, you can continue, as said above.
Differences:
- New android version, 2.3.5
- New market version (official), 3.x.x (1.5 or something)
- New ?!? (To be completed)

So I rooted my phone using the SuperOneClick method, and got my superuser app and everything but when I try to run Barnacle Wifi Tether, Superuser never prompts, and Barnacle complains that I haven't rooted my phone.
So I go into the preferences of Superuser snooping around to see whats wrong, and I come across (under the general tab) Su binary vnull. I tap it to check for updates and it goes like this:
Working...
Downloading manifest... okay!
Parsing manifest... okay!
Latest version = 3.0.3
Checking installed version = legacy
So it says at the top new version of su binary found.
Update now?
I tap update and this happens:
Working...
Fixing database... okay!
Checking for busybox... okay!
Checking current install path... /system/bin/su
Downloading new binary... okay!
Checking md5sum... fail!
I can keep tapping try again over and over but it never really gets past that step sooo, I'm stuck. I was hoping someone could help me out? If you can't, thanks for reading. If you can, I'd appreciate it very much! I live out in the middle of nowhere with no such thing as internet (other than what I can hardwire tether) and all I want to do is connect my Wii to the wifi on my phone.
I have the same problem. A work around is this...
You can download the appropriate su binary here...
androidsu.com/superuser
Then, flash it through recovery. It should update the binary no problem. However, it does not correct the problem. At least you'll have an updated binary.
If someone else knows what the problem is, that would be helpful in easier updates in the future.
Thanks for the quick reply! Though, can you explain what you mean by "flash it through recovery"? That's the only terms I'm not familiar with regarding this. Thanks again!
You need to use Clockwork Mod Recovery.
1) Install Rom Manger from the market.
2) Open up Rom Manger and install Clockwork Mod Recovery. Choose the appropriate phone model.
3) Reboot into recovery from Rom Manager.
4) Flash update using zip.
5) Select appropriate zip.
6) Reboot
How do I install Clockwork Mod Recovery? Where? Sorry if I'm asking to many questions.

Yes, I'm reading.
I'm no stranger to modding phones. Just android OS'. No need for the big red lettering.
I downloaded ROM Manager. There is no option within this app to download and install this Clockwork Recovery Mod.
There is a button that says, "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery" and underneath it says, "You must have the ClockworkMod Recovery installled to flash and restore ROMS"
But being that I've explained that I'm unfamiliar with the terminology, "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery" Doesn't sound the same as installing. Is that the button I should tap?
has anyone found a easy solution for this? i rooted my X10i on 2.3.3 stock and could update binary fine before now i've flashed DooMLoRD's v06 1113MHz overclocked kernel and flashed the RevolutionHD ROM im having problems updating my binary it says
Downloading manifest... okay!
Parsing manifest... okay!
Latest version = 3.0.3
Checking installed version = 2.3.2-efgh
Fixing database... okay!
Checking for busybox... okay!
Checking current install path... fail!
Failed to find currently installed su binary. update cannot continue
im guessing that means i have not got any su binary atall?

also i can't seem to download the latest superuser app from the market, it says your device is not compatible
I'm having the same message as TC. I'm on a SGH-T679 right now which doesn't have a version of CWM available for it yet (at least its not listed in ROM Manager). Any other way to install it? Can I just use ADB to push it to it?
Sorry buddy

I am with you buddy. That is one thing I have noticed with people familiar with programming, they seem to be oblivious when providing steps because many of their steps include further steps they simply view as inherent and fail to explain in depth. His steps do not clearly define what needs to be done to those not familiar. Of course they tend to get mad more often and say "If you don't understand you should't be messing with it anyways!" or something, unfortunately. I have been looking for a few hours hoping to find someone who not only knows how to do this, but is also familiar with technical writing, which is hard to do on this site surprisingly haha.

Although I imagine you may have figured this out by now -- yes, in this case (and I find it hard to believe that anyone who's familiar with modding phones wouldn't infer this) you're being expected to understand that "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery" would install it to your phone. Press that button and then follow the rest of the directions that several people have already given you in plain english.

This question has nothing to do with "programming" knowledge or talking in obtuse technical terminology -- it's just the basic assumption that if someone has found the XDA-Developers forum and has rooted their phone, they typically don't have to be told that flashing something to their phone installs it.
Same issue
I have the exact same issue as the Taplamp.
Here are the steps I have tried with the same issue -
1. When running SU Bionary update, it fails @ Md5sum.
2. SU Update Fixer Fails @ Root access.
3. Installed Clockworkmod failed to install/run because "An error occurred while attempting to run privileged commands"
4. recovery will boot up fine, however, when trying to load Update.zip, fails and aborts install (without clockworkmod installed) - figures!
5. Resetting catch and wiping memory and reactivating the phone will allow it to work for a few seconds then starts failing.
6. I went to the source and got the updated information on androidsu.com/superuser but when trying to flash it fails.
I may aim to flash my phone via RSD Lite but if anyone has any ideas, I am open to try.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
I do have two rooted droid's, both the same phone. Would it be possible to copy/paste the files on the working one over the one failing?
I would try this, however I am at work.
Does not work with CWM flashing...
I have the same problem: "md5sum...fail".
I tried with "su update fixer" and also with "CWM". No success.
Can anyone help us please?
I figured it out ! WORKS 100%
What you have to do:
1. Download & install BusyBox.
2. Open BusyBox and inside the program make the update (it will show you the update, don't worry)
3. After the update is finished, try to update superuser md5sum.
4. ENJOY !!! This is how simple it worked for me!
Hit a thanks for me...
track13 - That method worked for me, so thankyou!
For the record the steps I completed were:
(1) Install Busybox from Google Play (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=stericson.busybox&feature=search_result)
(2) Re-ran the Superuser (SU) update
That's it!

I do appreciate the effort that you've put forth in finding a solution and I can see that you've helped a couple of other users as well! Awesome.
Unfortunately though, by the time I came back to the xda-developers forums I've been trying to figure out how to remove all traces of root and removing the Superuser.apk because the only reason I originally wanted to root was to freely use wireless tethering apps, but since FoxFi's release, I've lost the need for it.
So now I'm trying to get rid of Superuser because I've got an upgrade in a few months and I'd like to trade this device in towards credit, anyone got experience with this?
Thanks again, track13.
it worked for me

Ok so I know this thread has been dead for a while but I just wanted you and anyone else out there in the realm of this question and goal to know barnacle or any other tether like it that creates an adhoc network to share it's connection can't be used on a wii, wii is incapable of joining an adhoc wifi network, so you'll need to find another wifi solution anyhow.
Thank boss ama give that a try I got no pc and phone is galaxy j100
