So I rooted my phone using the SuperOneClick method, and got my superuser app and everything but when I try to run Barnacle Wifi Tether, Superuser never prompts, and Barnacle complains that I haven't rooted my phone.
So I go into the preferences of Superuser snooping around to see whats wrong, and I come across (under the general tab) Su binary vnull. I tap it to check for updates and it goes like this:
Working...
Downloading manifest... okay!
Parsing manifest... okay!
Latest version = 3.0.3
Checking installed version = legacy
So it says at the top new version of su binary found.
Update now?
I tap update and this happens:
Working...
Fixing database... okay!
Checking for busybox... okay!
Checking current install path... /system/bin/su
Downloading new binary... okay!
Checking md5sum... fail!
I can keep tapping try again over and over but it never really gets past that step sooo, I'm stuck. I was hoping someone could help me out? If you can't, thanks for reading. If you can, I'd appreciate it very much! I live out in the middle of nowhere with no such thing as internet (other than what I can hardwire tether) and all I want to do is connect my Wii to the wifi on my phone.
I have the same problem. A work around is this...
You can download the appropriate su binary here...
androidsu.com/superuser
Then, flash it through recovery. It should update the binary no problem. However, it does not correct the problem. At least you'll have an updated binary.
If someone else knows what the problem is, that would be helpful in easier updates in the future.
Thanks for the quick reply! Though, can you explain what you mean by "flash it through recovery"? That's the only terms I'm not familiar with regarding this. Thanks again!
You need to use Clockwork Mod Recovery.
1) Install Rom Manger from the market.
2) Open up Rom Manger and install Clockwork Mod Recovery. Choose the appropriate phone model.
3) Reboot into recovery from Rom Manager.
4) Flash update using zip.
5) Select appropriate zip.
6) Reboot
How do I install Clockwork Mod Recovery? Where? Sorry if I'm asking to many questions.

Yes, I'm reading.
I'm no stranger to modding phones. Just android OS'. No need for the big red lettering.
I downloaded ROM Manager. There is no option within this app to download and install this Clockwork Recovery Mod.
There is a button that says, "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery" and underneath it says, "You must have the ClockworkMod Recovery installled to flash and restore ROMS"
But being that I've explained that I'm unfamiliar with the terminology, "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery" Doesn't sound the same as installing. Is that the button I should tap?
has anyone found a easy solution for this? i rooted my X10i on 2.3.3 stock and could update binary fine before now i've flashed DooMLoRD's v06 1113MHz overclocked kernel and flashed the RevolutionHD ROM im having problems updating my binary it says
Downloading manifest... okay!
Parsing manifest... okay!
Latest version = 3.0.3
Checking installed version = 2.3.2-efgh
Fixing database... okay!
Checking for busybox... okay!
Checking current install path... fail!
Failed to find currently installed su binary. update cannot continue
im guessing that means i have not got any su binary atall?
---------- Post added at 02:19 AM ---------- Previous post was at 01:48 AM ----------
also i can't seem to download the latest superuser app from the market, it says your device is not compatible
I'm having the same message as TC. I'm on a SGH-T679 right now which doesn't have a version of CWM available for it yet (at least its not listed in ROM Manager). Any other way to install it? Can I just use ADB to push it to it?
Sorry buddy

I am with you buddy. That is one thing I have noticed with people familiar with programming, they seem to be oblivious when providing steps because many of their steps include further steps they simply view as inherent and fail to explain in depth. His steps do not clearly define what needs to be done to those not familiar. Of course they tend to get mad more often and say "If you don't understand you should't be messing with it anyways!" or something, unfortunately. I have been looking for a few hours hoping to find someone who not only knows how to do this, but is also familiar with technical writing, which is hard to do on this site surprisingly haha.

Although I imagine you may have figured this out by now -- yes, in this case (and I find it hard to believe that anyone who's familiar with modding phones wouldn't infer this) you're being expected to understand that "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery" would install it to your phone. Press that button and then follow the rest of the directions that several people have already given you in plain english.

This question has nothing to do with "programming" knowledge or talking in obtuse technical terminology -- it's just the basic assumption that if someone has found the XDA-Developers forum and has rooted their phone, they typically don't have to be told that flashing something to their phone installs it.
Same issue
I have the exact same issue as the Taplamp.
Here are the steps I have tried with the same issue -
1. When running SU Bionary update, it fails @ Md5sum.
2. SU Update Fixer Fails @ Root access.
3. Installed Clockworkmod failed to install/run because "An error occurred while attempting to run privileged commands"
4. recovery will boot up fine, however, when trying to load Update.zip, fails and aborts install (without clockworkmod installed) - figures!
5. Resetting catch and wiping memory and reactivating the phone will allow it to work for a few seconds then starts failing.
6. I went to the source and got the updated information on androidsu.com/superuser but when trying to flash it fails.
I may aim to flash my phone via RSD Lite but if anyone has any ideas, I am open to try.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
I do have two rooted droid's, both the same phone. Would it be possible to copy/paste the files on the working one over the one failing?
I would try this, however I am at work.
Does not work with CWM flashing...
I have the same problem: "md5sum...fail".
I tried with "su update fixer" and also with "CWM". No success.
Can anyone help us please?
I figured it out ! WORKS 100%
What you have to do:
1. Download & install BusyBox.
2. Open BusyBox and inside the program make the update (it will show you the update, don't worry)
3. After the update is finished, try to update superuser md5sum.
4. ENJOY !!! This is how simple it worked for me!
Hit a thanks for me...
track13 - That method worked for me, so thankyou!
For the record the steps I completed were:
(1) Install Busybox from Google Play (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=stericson.busybox&feature=search_result)
(2) Re-ran the Superuser (SU) update
That's it!

I do appreciate the effort that you've put forth in finding a solution and I can see that you've helped a couple of other users as well! Awesome.
Unfortunately though, by the time I came back to the xda-developers forums I've been trying to figure out how to remove all traces of root and removing the Superuser.apk because the only reason I originally wanted to root was to freely use wireless tethering apps, but since FoxFi's release, I've lost the need for it.
So now I'm trying to get rid of Superuser because I've got an upgrade in a few months and I'd like to trade this device in towards credit, anyone got experience with this?
Thanks again, track13.

Ok so I know this thread has been dead for a while but I just wanted you and anyone else out there in the realm of this question and goal to know barnacle or any other tether like it that creates an adhoc network to share it's connection can't be used on a wii, wii is incapable of joining an adhoc wifi network, so you'll need to find another wifi solution anyhow.
Thank boss ama give that a try I got no pc and phone is galaxy j100

After bdemartino wrote his AWESOME thread for the Mesmerize it seemed only fitting that the Showcase get their very own... And since his Thread was Flawless, with his permission I'm mostly copy/pasting word for word.
THIS GUIDE IS SPECIFICALLY FOR THE SHOWCASE
If you're Looking For FROYO Skip down to the bottom of this post to the Section Labled FROYO!!!!!
Keep in mind there are many variations to each step, this is what worked for me the easiest.
And last but not least. There is always the disclaimer that attempting any of this can and will make your phone dysfunctional and or possibly bricked beyond repair (but most likely just dysfunctional which is a pain in the arse to deal with) if you do not follow steps completely (and of a trustworthy source such as xda - ehm and in the appropriate forum ).
So make sure you're in a comfortable environment (not a good idea to be trying to accomplish this while slamming beers at the bar), take your time, read each step that these people have taken the time to carefully write up (then follow it), and you'll be just fine. Be patient as things don't always move fast and you never want to freak out as you may screw things up bad, when it's actually just taking longer than you would expect. Always give it at least 5 minutes before you determine it's looping or crashing or whatevering, there is alot going on behind the scenes, trust me!
Steps to Customize Your Stock Showcase (For Eclair 2.1)
1) Root your phone. - Basically all this means is gaining the ability to give programs/apps and yourself SuperUser access (equivalent of being admin in windows) and also the ability to flash roms via recovery, detailed below.
The easiest way to root is through the z4root.apk. (an application that will run right on your phone)
Download Here
After download, put z4root.apk on your SD card root directory
Then make sure in Settings->Applications that the "Unknown sources" box is checked.
If you don't have a file manager, download a free one from the market, using the file manager navigate to the z4root.apk and select to install it. Note: If you need help at this step, no offense I would suggest getting someone with more experience to help you continue on. I'm serious here
Reboot your phone
After it boots, open the z4root app and press root. At this point it is going to hang, give it 2 minutes and pull the battery. Count to 10, put it back in and turn it on. - This is normal
After your phone boots open z4root again and click root, this time it will run no problems and phone will reboot.
NOTE**IF YOU HAVE PROBLEMS WITH z4root: "give Super One Click a try. It's a package you have to download to your computer, but you get to see more of what's actually going on so you know where it's at in the process. I have only used up to version 1.5.5, and I know that version is very capable for the Showcase on 2.1. It is located here."-This Information provided by phidelt82**
Once you are rooted (you will see the superuser icon in your apps, it will show apps you've given that permission to... eventually) you will need to make sure you have a file manager that can request root permissions (read/write) before you will be able to complete the next step. Search the market for "root file manager" and pick one to download and install.
I use Root Explorer
It's a few bucks, but there's hardly a day that goes by when I don't use it.. (Well worth the money)
Also at this step I would download and install RomManager and TerminalEmulator as you will need these later.
2) Install RomManager and the ClockworkMod Recovery. These will basically just give you the ability to boot into recovery where you can more easily flash kernel's/rom's and anything else you wish to push to your phone. (Recovery is basically a bios like interface - but it's different than the stock version)
I was able to install the Clockwork Mod Recovery very easily just by simply using the root file manager app I had downloaded, along with following with the instructions.
(In your file manager, MAKE SURE YOU ARE Read/Write not Read/Only, for RootExplorer there is a toggle at the top, other ones you may have to enable this through settings, others may just be R/W by default, you will just have to determine this or google the app)
Download the two Files you need from the bottom of this post
Place both files on your SD card root if you were using a computer to download them or you could always download them through your phone's browser
Using the root file explorer app, move the Redbend_ua file from the SD card to /system/xbin/
Long press on the Redbend_ua file and click permissions, there should be one check missing, check that so that all are marked. Save and exit.
Now open TerminalEmulator
NOTE:The spaces below are actual spaces and in bml8 there is a lowercase "L" not a "1" there is also a space after cd, after redbend_ua, after restore, and after recovery.bin
TYPE THIS ALL EXACTLY AS SHOWN BETWEEN THE QUOTES
at the command line ($) type "su" (then hit enter)
Type "cd /system/xbin" (then hit enter, which changes directory)
Type "redbend_ua restore /sdcard/zImage /dev/block/bml8" (then hit enter, It will now scroll a bunch of text and reboot.)
After phone boots, open RomManager
Click on Flash ClockworkMod Recovery
Select the Samsung Fascinate your phone will still be the Showcase. This is just what works with our model.
At this point you're all stock and ready for new kernel/rom. (but now you are able to do so very easily)
Accessing Recovery!!!!!
NOTE: There are a few ways of getting into recovery mode. The easiest is to download QuickBoot.
Once installed you can install the widget to any homescreen or just use the app from the app drawer. Once you open the app, click Recovery and it automatically reboots the Phone into Recovery..
You may have to click the install update.zip (while you're on the stock kernel after Voodoo you won't have to anymore)
The other method, which you will need incase you EVER Bootloop! Is the 3 finger method (Hold down the volume up and down keys and the power button all at the same time when you're turning your phone on) Once you see the Samsung splash screen you can remove your finger from the power button, but keep holding down both volume keys!!!
Incase of Bootloop, remove the battery and do this while Rebooting...
AGAIN WHILE YOU STILL HAVE A STOCK KERNEL, YOU WILL PROBABLY HAVE TO *apply sdcard:update.zip* after you enter the FIRST RECOVERY...
The next Screen will be Clock Work Mod, this is where you will want to do your First Nandroid Backup!!!!
3) KERNEL: Install Voodoo lagfix kernel and new 5.0 sound
Now onto Installing a Voodoo Kernel
If you want speed and good battery life (and high standard marks) +unlocking the headphone amp and eq controls (it makes even the samsung headset sound killer) go here and follow those steps for using your now functional recovery mode to flash the new Voodoo 5.0 kernel.
Now you can install Voodoo Control and get new life out of those earbuds!!!
Note: Just an FYI, after installing custom kernel's you will always have an issue on start up of seeing a flashing black box in the middle of the samsung logo. This can be corrected by installing a custom boot screen (only requires root access) and you can find out how here.
4) Custom ROM : Download and install the ROM of your choice.
Right now we really only have 1 that I recommend..
It's Phidelt82's PicknPack Rom
This is a deodexed Rom which allows you to use MODS and themes. This ROM is 100% Stable, I've been running it for a WHILE with ZERO issues...
MODS/Themes/Customization
NoClock in the Status Bar
Midnight Theme
HoneyComb Digital Clock
Shutdown Animations or Images
Bootanimations with new Boot Sounds
Of course there is WAY more than these listed, but this should fill up your afternoon playing around with your new and IMPROVED Showcase!!!
FROYO FOR THE SHOWCASE = YUMMY!!!!
Yes, for those of you that didn't already know, thanks to Phidelt82 we now have Froyo!!!! I've been running it for about a week and it's Delicious!!!
I'm not going to Write as much as I did for the 2.1 b/c the directions are in the threads already.. Just follow the Directions, if you have any problems after that read through the threads and see if anyone's already figured them out...
And this will work with a Factory Showcase!!!!!
First of all you need to go to:
[Froyo-Odin] Showcase EB11 - Cellular South Update (be sure to Thank Phidelt82)
After this you will have 2.2, now you can use:
SuperOneClick to root your new Froyo Showcase (if you want)!!!
And if you plan on doing Mods/Themes/etc.. You should go ahead and Flash the EB11 Showcase Pick-n-Pack, again be sure to thank Phidelt82 for this!!!
If you flash the PicknPack Rom made by Phidelt82, then there's no need to root... It comes PREROOTED.. You only need to ROOT if you're staying on the Stock 2.2!!!
If you're flashing the picknpack do a Nandroid backup after you're done.... If you're going to stay on the Factory 2.2, do you a Nandroid backup after that...
Thanks to lmartin92, JT1134, Phidelt82, we now have a voodoo kernel with lagfix for 2.2 which can be found HERE...
If you're new to using voodoo lagfix kerenls.. Remember to always disable lagfix before doing Nandroid Backups/Restores/Flashing mods/Themes for YOUR SAFETY
I'm working on a few themes... sbrissen has already Made us the NoClock and NoAmPm mod (you have to be on the picknpack for these)
For a list of the Mods/Themes/Roms for the showcase look HERE
Always check the Mesmerize forums for new Android Development, Mods, Themes, etc...
And for help Don't be afraid to ask (after you've read this legnthy post) or drop by the #samsung-mesmerize channel at http://webchat.freenode.net/
Thanks to Phidelt82 for all of his dev support for our phone!!! If you want to donate to him click HERE
Thanks to bdemartino who wrote the AWESOME tutorial HERE that i mostly copied/pasted from!!! Be sure to click his thank you button if this helped you out...

We're here... For the most part i'm waiting on a stable 2.2 or 2.3 based rom. Running pick-n-pack for now with Voodoo5.
Whenever I got to the terminal emulator and do the "redbend_ua restore /sdcard/recovery.bin /dev/block/bml8" it comes back with a permission denied and then reboots the phone...I've check my spelling/case numerous times. Following the instructions on the original post/thread where the zip file came from goes ok, but the recovery rom doesnt allow me to install the VooDoo in the next step. Any help would be great.
Thanks.

you more than likely are going to need to install Root Explorer onto your phone.. And use it to move the files (that's what I and many others had to do)

Are you typing su first to grant root permissions? You should see a # instead of a $ at the prompt.
Sent from my voodoo froyo Mesmerize
I have root manager installed and used it to move the files from the /sdcard directory to /system/xbin and I am typing su at the terminal to change from $ to #
One more question:
Do I need to follow the instructions in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=860250
or the ones that are in the first post of this thread?

will Root Manager allow you to do this? If not Rootexplorer will.
if you do this:
I'm not sure if you can do this through terminal or not... I did mine from my pc... you may have to leave off adb shell and just start at su when using terminal...
This is making the file executable
adb shell
su
chmod 777 /sdcard/redbend_ua
while it's still on the sdcard (Before moving it then you don't need to worry about it)
Ok, it seems that the Mes instructions were infact different on this method... I've updated the first post... If you'll read now you'll see what you should be typing in..
sorry about that, and thanx for pointing it out
I'm sorry, I am using Root Explorer...and yes, I have all 777 permissions to the redbend_ua file under /system/xbin, the only thing that I can think of is by looking in the /sdcard directory, there is no recovery.bin file that the last terminal command is referring to...is there suppose to be, if so, it comes from the voodoo mesmerize post...am I suppose to download that?

You need root to install a custom ROM in all phones. This post might be helpful:
eMJaaay said:
Firstly you need root. Then you have to move a custom recovery to your phone's /system to allow you to install unsigned packages. You can do this using root explorer (paid app, but its the most simple and easy way of doing it) or you can do it using. You also need to have a custom recovery file, the update.zip which when you hit reinstall packages (given you pushed the custom recovery file to the phone's system) would bring up clockworkmod recovery. In clockworkmod recovery, there are many options, one of them being mounts and storages. Going on to that option will bring up your mounts and storages, where the most important one you need to check is SYSTEM which should always say UNMOUNT. If it says MOUNT SYSTEM, click on it and it should say UNMOUNT SYSTEM.
For ROOT, use SuperOneClick. You can download the file here -> link (scroll to the end of the post). I used version 2.2 and everything worked fine. Look at this guide by ayoteddy for more information -> link. You need to choose psneuter as your exploit. Windows detects this app as a virus so make sure all your anti-virus / firewall software is off. If it doesn't work, try and try again. Change USB cables and try some more!
Read the noob guide here -> link. Its REALLY good and gives you a step by step of how to root / get custom recovery and install custom ROM.
Go here -> link. For more in depth information about getting a custom recovery. And here -> link. for Krylon's recovery files (links on his thread aren't all working).
I recently rooted and got custom recovery and installed a fresh ROM (GOV 3.2) and all I can say is, be patient and follow everything step by step and you'll be fine. I'll also advise you to partition your SD card BEFORE installing a ROM just to be safe, because I've heard some people having issues with it. I did it and had no problem, but again I don't know if this is a placebo or actually helped. After installation / rebooting, etc ... don't touch your phone for a couple of minutes. If you reply in the appropriate threads, I'm sure someone will help you out if it doesn't work.

Did you put the recovery in the system/bin?
And the update in the root of your SD?

When it gives that message it usually means you haven't correctly pushed recovery to your /system. You can only push recovery after you have successfully rooted (get a free root checking app from the Play Store to check). Once you've rooted, you need to push the recovery file you get after you extract the recovery zip from the download links I've sent. You can move it from the root of your SD card to your phone using adb or root apps such as root explorer (very simple, but its a paid app). You also need to download the update.zip file from the link I sent (same place you downloaded the recovery file) and put it at the root of your SD card (don't unzip it). That should work!
Ok thanks . I'm going to try this now.
Does anyone know if Z4Root will work on this tablet? Thanks!
I've been looking for one for 3 days now, I tryed onclickroot and z4root or something like that,, cant find anything Anyone please help!!
I'm still waiting for my tablet to be delivered...I'm gonna try SuperOneClick (crosses fingers)
I got one of these for my daughter for xmas. I spent a few days trying to root it with no luck. I'm not intimately familiar with android (some unix experience), but I tried all the options I could find for rooting Allwinner a10 devices. At first I ran into problems with adb unable to recognize the device for most one-click methods. I downloaded the android tools and was able to connect with the included adb. After studying the scripts, they all use the "adb root" command to gain root access on the device and copy the necessary files. Unfortunately, this command fails using adb from the tools. At first I thought this was due to my adb version, but after doing some research I think it is actually due to the device kernel. I believe it requires reflashing or some exploit to be able to gain root. I was able to install root explorer and I can browse all the necessary directories but I can't modify or copy the necessary files into them. Busybox told me there was an older version installed, but wouldn't let me install a newer version (again I think due to the permissions). Also, superuser would say it installed but the su binary did not show up on the bin directory. As the necessary directories are all owned by root, I couldn't figure out a way to modify the permissions...
I wound up returning the FileMate and got a Lenovo IdeaTab. Got that rooted in no time.
sorry i never saw this post i've bought 2 of these and i rooted them,
i wish i could get a better build for them though, too many app crashes and the internet connectivity sucks
i used a method by Bin4ry called root with restore, v17 worked any ways i have the zip if you would like it

FileMate Clear T720
Thank you very much for being the only person ever to have posted in regards to this tablet. I just got mine for christmas and have been trying to get it rooted. I've tried a lot of those one-click methods, and I've even tried this Bin4ary method. but it just hangs up on "daemon started sucessfully*"
Can you please direct me to the filemate drivers (if needed)
also, I have usb debugging endable, allowing 3rd party (not secure) files enabled. and pulling my hair out (enabled).
Thanks again.
Also, I'm running windows 7 and 8, (((maybe i should try win7))) hmm. i'll get back to you on that. Anyhow, any advice would be greatly appreciated, since returning it doesn't sound very fun.

I laughed so hard. ok your going to have to install drivers by force,
first off do you happen to have android sdk installed? if you don't there is another way but its going to sound weird,
if you do have the android SDK installed:
1. go to your computer manager (by opening explorer, right click on the "computer" group on the left column and select manager)
2. look for any unrecognized item that appears, ( it will most likely be labeled "Clear" with a faded icon and a "?" sign on top
3. right click and choose "Update drivers", it will give you options, choose "Browse my computer for driver software", another option screen will show,
4. at the bottom of the window there will be an option that says "let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer"
5. on the screen that appears there should be an option that says "ADB Interface", choose this
6. choose "Google, Inc.">"ADB Testing Interface version x.x.x.x" (I chose version 2.1.0.0)
that should do it next time you plug in the tablet try running ddms or open the cmd and type in "adb devices" (assuming you have adb installed) and it should show.
if this helps just hit the thanks button
[edit] I am running windows 8 btw [/edit]
ADB interface doesn't show up
Thank you very much for getting me farther, however I dont see ADB interface. I'm looking into it right now. I just re-installed the sdk drivers and will keep at it.
BTW, is it even worth doing this? the main reason I want to do it, is so i can connect my ps3 remote via bluetooth, and possibly a little overclocking. Have you had any luck OC it?
Thanks again Much appreciated:good:

open up SDK manager and go to Extras>"Google USB Drivers"
also install everything in the "Android 4.0 (API 14)" section, I have other options installed if this still doesn't work.
its worth it just for the extra stuff that root comes with like titanium backup, but you cant over clock, if you go any higher than 1200 MHz it will lock up and you have to force it to reset.

As far as being unable to update binaries, try to find a custom recovery and install. From there, you can inject them via su-binary update.zip and bam!

That is the link for the Kingo site. The first time I saw it on here there was some question about whether it was safe becase it is not open source and used a Chinese SuperSu app. I felt safe using it on a tablet because I do no banking on it or anything, but the newest posts I have seen are that Kingo is safe. Hope that helps. And if you know where to find a custom recovery that will work with this app please let me know.
Ok, i watched your sign-up video, i read the READ BEFORE POSTING posts, i searched the search, and there is NOT ONE STRAIGHT answer to the most obvious and common issue: su binary update.
There is no official thread titled "su binary" which would be NICE if somebody post a link to the latest version of su binary, tells people which version of Superuser app it is compatible with (i know there's at least 3, CWM, ChainSDD, and Chainfire) I cant even google this binary. I cant even tell if somebody is developing on this binary.
I just don't understand how nobody brought up this issue in any manner. Nobody asked whether the binary code is available in the market, needs to be downloaded from the web and flashed on the phone, etc. In worst case scenario, if su binary is discontinued, then just say "It is no longer supported. Forget about rooting from now on."
I have T-Mobile GS4 (SGH-M919) running Android 4.2 baseband UVUAMDL, i rooted the phone using MotoChopper that gave me Superuser app by CWM.
If you can be ANY help, please reply with some kind of answer that somebody can actually understand. If you have no clue about a single word i just posted, there you go. There is no answer to this "su binary" issue, so forget about rooting and what not. Save your soul from googling 5 hours a day here and web, looking for answers that no one ever asked.
You're very welcome.
Superuser update
Cowls192,
There are a couple of ways to update SU ... I can share at least two ways.
1) If you have experience using Terminal and can get a hold of the updated SU binary, then you can simply copy it to
the appropriate place. I forget whether the location of the original SU binary is under the /sys or /system folder.
2) I'm quoting from DroidXForums here so take it for what it's worth ..
"The new superuser : su v2.3-ef can also be downloaded from the Google market."
I hope that this small bit of information shows you that the answer CAN be found with patience.
Lacking patience ... this IS a great place to find help!
If you found this to be of help, please condiser clicking the THANKS button.

Couple things to straighten up here.
Okay, the whole problem with "su binary update failed" is because my phone was NOT rooted. End of that story.
After my phone was rooted successfully, it didn't ask me to install su binary, being out of date, nothing like that.
At this point, i will just assume that whenever app is released/updated, let it be Superuser SuperSU or else, the app itself includes su binary already.
It is still difficult to find answers and solutions for folks who are new to smartphone or Android world...and i mean VERY new, like he/she just got an Android phone for the first time in life today!! A lot of unnecessary questions and replies can be reduced if SOMEBODY creates FAQ or intro to rooting and flashing tips.
Finally, i have T-Mobile GS4 (SGH-M919), and although i read a post saying that su binary is not compatible with SuperSU at this point, (see, it's even harder to search for posts i read recently) after successfully rooting my phone, SuperSU DID NOT ask or even say anything about "su binary" whatsoever, so that made me smile today.
Thanks for those who took few seconds to read my posts, and i really hope somebody is being helped after reading these messages.

Same situation here...

me too...
me three.....I can,t update....
I used kingroot app, then superSU-ME, and superSU told me to update the su binary.(Another superuser app told me that my binary still remained "kinguser_su(348)")
Same here, from a nexus 6p
I have a Nexus 6p which I thought was already rooted, but when I used the root checker, it says my phone isn't properly rooted. Also, when I try running Super User it keeps saying that I'm missing the su binary or that it needs to be updated. I have no idea what the next step is now. Can someone help me figure out what I need to do?

POST FOR EVERYONE WHO HAS TROUBLE FINDING/UPDATING THE BINARIES:
1. The SuperSU app version number corresponds to the su binary version. To check the version of the su binary go to Settings --> Apps --> SuperSU and look at the version number.
2. SuperSU app will push a notification if the binary needs to be updated.
3. You will also see a popup window once you open the SuperSU app in case there is a new version
4. To be sure you have the latest version you can follow one of the links below which will have the download for the latest recovery-installable zip that will root and install the SU app along with the latest binaries:
Stable (recommended): http://download.chainfire.eu/supersu-stable
Beta: http://download.chainfire.eu/supersu-beta
Latest: http://download.chainfire.eu/supersu
5. There is a thread dedicated to binary update problems. You will have more luck there: http://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/supersu/support-update-failures-t2907365
6. Also remember to visit the official post for any future updates and extra info: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1538053
NOTE: In most cases you have to update the SU app to get the latest binary version.

Then you didn't root properly. Try different root methods or re-root your phone.
So there is a bargain chinese 4G phone called the 'InFocus M512'.
The problem with it is that it comes without Google Apps and also is not rooted (sometimes is). Also it does not have CWM Recovery.
So this quick tutorial shows you how to root, install CWM Recovery and install google apps on the M512.
I'm not responsible for any damage
Rooting:
Method 1
1.Go to settings>>Security>>Check Unknown Sources tap OK.
2.Download this file.
3.Install
4.Run and tap 'get root' or somthing like that.
5.Delete KingRoot and some chinese app, but DO NOT DELETE KingUser!
6.Done!
Method 2
Flash CWM Recovery using the 2nd method from this post. If you have rooted usign the first method use method 1 from that post.
Download UPDATE-SuperSU-x.xx.zip (i used 2.46)
Reboot into CWM.
Select Install zip>choose zip from /sdcard>select UPDATE-SuperSU-x.xx.zip, press power button
Reboot now
GApps
1.Download this zip file
2.Reboot into CWM.
3.Select Install zip>choose zip from /sdcard>select the file, press power button
4.Reboot now.
How to delete KingUser (only if you have SuperSU and it is working)
Download ES File explorer, enable root explorer, go to /system/app and delete KingUser.
So this is how to get root, cwm and gapps on the m512.
First Method no good for me
I put the kingroot file in the adb tools folder and used the install command. It wasn't clear from the above whether the phone needed to be in recovery or some other mode so I tried a few times, in recovery mode and again just connected as an mtp device in the normal way. Either way the result was the same, it said "Invalid APK File: KingRoot.......".
I will have a go at the CWM thing next.
I am still on the 103A ROM that the phone came to me with - I have been trying, on and off, without success to update and then root it , for months.
When trying to flash an update ROM it tells me that the update package has unexpected contents and the there is an error in the update file and then says "Status 7". You can read all about my lack of success on this forum under the threads M512 started by Galaxy Why.
I'm trying, I really am....
Let me start by saying thanks for making the effort to post what you know and so to help people like me, however.
I tried to follow the method 2 (as I don't have root) from your other post (the one linked to above with the words "the 2nd method from this post" but got stuck.
Your instructions in normal my comments in italics.
Method 2: (No root)
1.Connect your phone via USB to your PC. OK
2.Enable MTP. OK
3.Enable USB Debugging. Settings>Developer Options> tick USB Debugging. OK
4.On your computer, 2 drives will appear: One of them is a CD-Rom which contains all drivers. OK
5.Click on that CD-Rom and it will install all drivers. It doesn't, or it may do, but what it definately does is asks me to put a disc in the drive and tries to do some kind of dir_all in windows explorer - I would post a screenshot here but this page only allows URL's- and I'm not sure how to go about that.. but I think I've managed to upload a screenshot....
After waiting for 5 minutes or so to see if something would happen as the green progress bar ground to a halt but the busy circle continued I hit the cancel button on the "please insert a disc dialogue" and then ploughed on anyway ....
6.Plug phone in again. Now this had me confused, I assume you mean unplug AND THEN plug the phone in again.
7.Download the .ZIP file and extract it somewhere. Which/what zip file do you mean exactly?? I couldn't get past this.
8.Click on _install_cwm_6.0.5.1.cmd
9.Your phone will ask you something, just tick "always allow from this computer" and hit OK.
10.Your phone will reboot into DL Mode, then it will reboot again.
11.Recovery is installed.
It's late and I'm tiring so sorry if missed something obvious. Any advice?

Looks like you don't have a adb driver
And... why do you want to root your phone? Installing CWM is not root required.
M512 comes with a unlocked bootloader, just boot into bootloader and you can flash anything you like.
I made a customized stock rom based on version 2280, bloatwares removed and Google Play framework included. (You can download the apps back from Play Store, if you needs those)
Now the phone has 2.09GB free spaces :victory:
If you were interested on it, I can upload it and give you a link.
