[INFO] Sensation broken touchscreen - HTC Sensation

Hi All,
Just noting this here in case anyone gets this in the future, as I know how much Googling helps me with situations like this...
My Sensation woke me up as normal this morning with the alarm, but I went to turn it off and couldn't. The touchscreen was unresponsive.
Neither the buttons nor the screen itself seem to respond to any gesture.
I've had it on charge overnight using the charger from my HD2, and have done a bit of Googling to find the Desire and a few other models with similar issues, but only with cheapy chargers.
I've also found that it could be that it has been "over charged" and the device needs to settle the battery levels before it works. I've had it on all morning, but i can't really keep pressing the power button every few seconds to wake it up!
I have managed to get into the bootloader menu (it uses the power and volume keys fine) and have performed a factory reset - no joy.
I've also used the bootloader menu to perform a "recovery" - this ended in looking like its a hardware issue as all i had was an exclamation ( ! ) with a big red triangle over a picture of the phone. Guessing this isn't a good thing.
I've let Vodafone know, and they are sending out a new replacement tomorrow, but we shall see what happens.
I miss the damned thing already!

Good to hear your got it replaced.
I just can't understand how the touchscreen is related to the power adapter. The only thing I've experienced is when I tried to charge my friend's iPhone (using the apple charger) on my car inverter, the touchscreen got really crazy, was detecting taps on its own etc..

By the looks of things its to do with magnetic or electrical fields produced by the adapters, using unshielded (i.e. cheap) adapters can negatively disturb the capacitive system. At least that is how I understand it from what I've read. (I'm not an electrical engineer or anything)

Yeah, that's what I was thinking too... But when that happened and he told me his new iphone had gone crazy and he was accusing me of breaking it with my inverters etc. I was really worried about having to get him a new phone (at least I could convert him and get him an android ) but then he disconnected it and it was ok so my heart was back in place.
Btw, the Desire was charging normally with it.

[Q] No tablet display but HDMI works.

Hi,
Yesterday (08/02/2013) I updated my tf700t, everything seemed to be fine after it rebooted, I was playing a game, the battery was low, and it turned off abruptly. I assumed it automatically shutdown because of the battery, so I put it in the dock and plugged in the charger. Several hours later I tried turning it on and nothing. I held down the power button for 8 seconds felt the double vibration, but no display. I tried various combinations of docked/undocked, power cord plugged in, holding the power button for 30-60 sec. etc. but nothing.
Out of curiosity I connected the HDMI to my computer monitor and sure enough, it was there, I could unlock it and everything seems to be functioning fine, just no display. The digitizer seems to work fine, although guessing where things are at is pretty tough.
I think I tried the cold boot, volume up/down (I tried both) plus power, and it didn't make a difference.
In order to do the update I had to flush the DMC Client and CMClient data and cache, I had been getting errors from DMC Client crashing.
Also I'm not certain this is update related, as the tablet had been acting wierd, which is why I did the update. I would press the power button to turn the screen on and nothing would happen, so I'd hold it down longer and the tablet would reboot and finally the screen would come on, or it would come on a few seconds after I pressed the button. I was getting a lot of reboots etc... I thought the update might resolve this.
I'm not sure if the problem is hardware, firmware, or software related.
I'm wondering if when I flushed the DMC and CM Client cache, maybe I deleted the drivers for the display or something?
My options seem to be:
1.) Factory reset by feeling around the digitizer while connected to HDMI
2.) Factory reset via the pinhole
3.) Install new (old) firmware via usb/computer. (the device is recognized by Windows 7 so I think this is doable.)
4.) Send it off to Asus. (would this be free?)
So my questions are:
1.) is there something else I should try?
2.) what order should I do the above in?
*Note: I'd like to save my data somehow.
*Edit: I forgot to mention I was on 4.2.1, no root or anything. Also I bought this in July of '12 so I'm pretty sure it is out of warranty. Any idea how much it might cost to send it off? Perhaps I could replace the LCD myself? I replaced the digitizer/screen on an ipod touch, although I'm sure this LCD is much more expensive and much harder to replace. This is turning into a nightmare. So much for trying to keep my data, now I hoping to keep this from becomming a paperweight.
Thanks.
A bloke at work had this issue. He let it rundown and left it for 3 days. It worked fine again after that.

If you don't even see the boot logo, it cannot be software related.
Thanks for the replies.
I'll try letting it run down. Would putting it in the freeser be helpful/safe?
I guess on the software/firmware it depends on the definition. To me drivers are software, firmware is anything written in VHDL. I suppose what I'm really wondering is if it is software/firmware vs. hardware, i.e. is the LCD or some other component dead or is the display just not getting written to, initialized or whatever.

I wouldn't put the tablet into the freezer.
Does the backlight come on? If not, it's definitely a hardware problem. If the bootloader boots fine but doesn't show anything, that also looks like a hardware problem.

I'm not sure about the backlight, I think maybe it does, it is kind of hard to tell. I'll try checking in a dark room tonight. Since the screen is just black I suppose I'm looking for a brighter shade of blackness?
The bootloader is definitely booting fine. That is what I meant in my original post, the HDMI out works, I can see everything there, I can even swipe and tap the digitizer and do stuff, it is just difficult to guess where things are at. Do I need to go back and clarify this in my original post?
Do you think this definitely means it is a hardware problem? I figure I'll try letting the battery run all the way down and let it sit a few days and recharge it as sbdags suggested, in the meantime perhaps I should contact Asus, but I'm not lookinf forward to that.

I don't know what is the cause but like I said I saw this with my very own eyes - the same as yours. Double buzz on boot not screen but HDMI worked. Somehow completely draining the battery fixed it ...... So hardware / software? Who knows? If it was hardware why did draining the battery fix it? The device has been absolutely perfect for 3 months since and has never done it again.....

Thanks sbdags, I will definitely try this. I'm not sure if I should hurry and contact Asus though, I bought this thing around July 22 2012 I think so it is barely more than a year old, not sure if they would cut me some slack on the warranty or not.
Do you think I need to let it sit three days or just make sure the battery is good and run down before charging again? Also I've seen some suggestions for charging from a computer vs. wall as it charges slower, do you think that would be better?
I'm getting into panic mode and want to make sure I don't do anything rash that limits my options.

All he did was leave it for 3 days. Our assumption was that the battery had completely drained in that time....... A charge later (he was actually just about to box it to send to Asus) and it surprisingly started as if nothing had happened.
Having the same problem
I am having almost the same problem, except that the tablet screen works when the wall charger is plugged in. THe HDMI display and the digitizer work fine. It is just the tablet's screen dispaly when the charger is unplugged.

So I didn't have any luck letting it run all the way down.
I contacted customer support, the warranty is only 1 year, but fortunately for this there is an extra 3 months, so I just managed to squeak by, although I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
same problem as you both
i have d same problem well until last week the screen displays when conne ted to wall charger now its all blank but iy works via hdmi, digitizer works fine but all blank, this tf201, does anyone know if i change d whole display it will work?
i already bought the tf701
any suggestions is welcomed and did you get youra to work?

I have not seen people mentioning VHDL and verilog for a while, hahaha... It sounds like you are a low level or physical layer programmer. Any way, a firmware is in general a low level program that communicating with the hardware and the software or high level program ( level 7).. If you will, a firmware is a management levels (level 2 and 3). A VHDL is a level 1 which generates a 0's and 1's or mapping the transistors in the FPGA chip for example.... Oh well, it is just my definition...

If you can get the output from the HDMI port, it is more likely you have a hardware problems. I think that the problems are your display related hardware. If you really want to troubleshoot your issues, you can look on the mother board to locate all the electrolytic caps and check to see any abnormal signs of those capacitors. Those caps are the one that will blew up first before any others parts go....Good luck...:fingers-crossed:

HTC One XL dead

Hello, I have this HTC One XL that appears to be dead (it died while charging at about 90%) according to the owner and he wants me to fix it.
I have encountered this issue on the HTC One S before and a simple battery pull seemed to fix it, so I opened this phone up, pulled the battery, left it there for awhile, put it back on charge - no led, no response to power button (or any other combination of buttons) like before, plugging it into my computer also did not give me any driver prompts. I measured the battery with my multimeter - it says the battery is at about 4+ volts.
any ideas?
Thanks

It would appear that the device is bricked. Try connecting it to a charger (AC outlet, not USB) for a day or two, see if it'll power on (either normally or via the bootloader button combo). If it doesn't power on it's most likely fried. Does it show up as anything in Device Manager in Windows at the moment?

nope, dosnt show up on windows at all, why would it randomly brick or fry for no reason tho? the dude was just charging it normally.
luckily I don't use HTC devices, seen this happen 2 times to my friends before
EDIT: To add on: the centre area above the battery feels hot to the touch, but the battery is cold (room temp)

This kind of thing happens to electronic devices from time to time. It doesn't matter whether it's from HTC, Samsung, LG, it can happen. In fact, a survey done a year or so ago revealed that HTC have a below average rate of malfunction (compared to the other manufacturers). So you'd actually have better odds if you had a HTC device.
Anyway, if charging for an extended period of time doesn't work, it's bricked. Give that a try and report back.

Anecdotal evidence. Things break, and nothing last forever (particularly electronics and batteries). It doesn't matter what brand. Most of the components of all smartphones (regardless of brand) come from the same 2 or 3 suppliers, anyway.

well, just sharing some personal experience, maybe my friends are not too careful with using their devices or something
Lots of these devices are coming up 2 years old now.
Rolling around in pockets with cotton lint, dropped from 4 feet repeatedly, pressed to a hot sweaty face, had their mechanical buttons pushed hundreds of thousands of times.
Some will have dropped out the race due to mishandling, most are still going.
Electronics die. New electronics die quicker.
Some may say "its because they don't make them like they use to", to that I say "correct because they are not very large heavy bricks with the most basic of function anymore"
I look around and see smashed screens of more or less every Apple, Samsung and Nokia. I actually haven't seen a smashed HTC yet.

You can try holding the power button while the charge is attached (seen one user on here that was able to power up this way, when nothing else worked). Also try bootloader (power + volume down, release power after a few seconds but keep holding vol down) with charger attached. But power, and power+vol down are the only button combos you should try.
I don't know what "charge for some time" means, its vague and doesn't tell us anything - leave it on the charger for 8+ hours. If you still don't have an LED after charging for 8+ hours, the phone is bricked. JTAG is likely your only option. Do you have access to JTAG equipment?

well, I held the power button down for about 30 seconds while it is attached to the charger, no response.
I left it there on charge before I started this thread, until now, no led's are on
is there anything that would cause a brick? The owner says he did not do anything out of the ordinary to the phone when this happened.
what's JTAG? ._.

There are a number of things that can lead to a spontaneous brick. Not an expert, but I think any hardware failure that prevents access to bootloader would do it. Or possibly a corruption of the memory that holds the hboot files or partition tables.
A spontaneous brick is not unheard of on this device.

Riff Box JTAG is a piece of equipment that when hardwired to the mainboard, can rewrite the memory on the phone and thereby resurrect a bricked device. I was under the impression from your comments, that you run some type of repair service or shop. But if you aren't even familiar with the JTAG concept, than its not something you should try yourself.
You can often find services (either local or online) that can JTAG for you. For a price, of course.

N5 in bootloop - possible hardware fault related to power circuit

Hi guys
Unfortunatly my time has come to have a possible hardware issue.
Yesterday my N5 was connected via USB (like I usually leave it resting at work / charging) and out of the blue, rebooted. Google logo shows up, and reboots right away. Trying VolDown + Power shows up the menu but I hardly have any time to select bootloader or recovery, and when I do, it eventually reboots again after a couple seconds.
I'm able to turn it on and have it on if I avoid touching the power button, when I do, sometimes it works (screens just turns off), sometimes ir shuts down after a few seconds after doing so. It's not always, but happens three out of five times.
Connecting the USB cable has the same behaviour, sometimes it's alright and I'm able to copy files and so on, sometimes it shuts off and there it goes into bootloop again.
So, I got home, opened it and I looked like a donkey looking at a castle lol. I had a disconnected brown wire on the right side of the battery which I was able to fix, but that doesn't seem to be the cause of the problem.
The power button feels ok, it's not exactly rattled or anything, it has on/off feeling. if you know what I mean.
Problem is, I bought this in second hand in london about 6 months ago, would be hard to RMA and probably they would give me the finger.
Anyway, suggestions? Anyone went through anything like this? I doubt it's a software issue (rom) cause the same behaviour happens when on recovery / bootloader. Sometimes it holds on and lets me do things, sometimes it doesn't. Most often, doesn't.
Any help or tips are greatly appreciated.
Thanks guys.

I can't, was bought in second hand in a shop, besides I opened it and the water sensor is pinkish (never touched water, probably humidity).
I can only do that around christmas time.
Any other tip ? Something I can do before considering something like that?

By sending in for repair or replacement, I meant to LG. Not Google for RMA.
LG will charge you for the repair or replacement.
There really isn't much you can do otherwise.

My transformer abandoned me today.

Yesterday i woke up to find my tablet unresponsive. Tried force-restarting it, but it never answered. "It's probably the battery, " I told myself, as I plugged it in to the wall and went to sleep.
This morning I tried booting it up again. It doesn't respond, doesn't beep, doesn't ilumminate and doesn't answer. It is not the battery, because I have it plugged to the original adapter, and the orange light is turned on. It is not the screen, because the tablet vibrates when booting, and not even the BIOS splash appears. At this point I came to conclusion that there is something very wrong with the hardware itself.
I don't like that it died peacefully in it sleep. The exterior is inmmaculate, I have cleaned it constantly, treated it well, and never dropped it to the ground. I cared for it beyond what it's laggy NAND deserved. For me it was like the stereotyped three-legged dog: crippled but loyal to the end.
Now I believe that cheap NAND ASUS soldered into it finally gave up. Or probably it just looked at me with envy, being constantly tempted by that Nexus 9 I see constantly on the internet, and it's weak NAND couldn't handle the betrayal.
So, is there any way to diagnose if my tablet finally wen to the big server farm in the sky? Is there any way to know what's wrong? Does anyone know what to do with the keyboard and cables other than trashing them? At the very least I want to know for certain if it is dead, so I can arrange a proper burial for it, with military honors and 21 canon shots... or more likely just dumping it into the recycling bin.
PS: If it's dead I believe I will replace it with a Nexus 9, but I am waiting for AnandTech's review. Is it the correct choice or does anyone know a better 10" tablet?
Did you try booting to the bootloader? Hold Power and Volume Down at the same time.
Try the reset pin hole (just above HDMI port) with and without Volume Down.
Good luck and do me a favor: Could you take a video of the burial and post it on YouTube? Would love to see that 21 gun salute LMAO

It didn't work. While plugged in I pressed the V- and Power buttons, and later the Reset and Power Buttons, and later all three at the same time. Neither worked. Nothing on the screen, No vibration, nothing. Yet the orange power LED shines when plugged in, don't know if it is a good or bad thing.
I guess that a few days of perspective really allowed me to sink the death of my tab.
But my snark came from the fact that I really took good care of my tablet. It is still in pristine, yet it still died. So frustrating.

S6 hardware troubleshooting - 3 phones can't figure out the issue

Hey y'all, so I'm not sure how well hardware related questions go down on here usually, but not sure where else to ask. So I have about 2.5 Samsung Galaxy s6's. All were given to me at different stages slash periods of time and none of them exactly work fully. Where I am at now is sort of realizing that either: 1. I have to faulty digitizers, or 2. the one battery I have between them is completely shots, or 3. a combination of one and two as well as some other s*** going on.
So what I have for parts AR, two motherboards two digitizers, three bodies, and one battery. I get kind of the same issue switching between the motherboards which is this: I will plug the phones in to my computer and it will read them and say something like SM and then the numbers that represent the s6, and I'll have a either red l LED for a while which will then turn green after a while charging, or a blue LED from the get-go which I believe just stays blue the entire time. Now, the weird thing is that neither of the phones will turn on, however, whenever I push the home button with either digitizer or either motherboard, it will cause the LED to turn off, but will not cause the phone to stop being recognized by the computer. When I say recognized by the computer I don't mean it shows up in the my PC folder, like where I can access the files and such, it just shows up in the device manager, thus giving me the impression that it never actually turns on. This also happens if I end a press up on the volume at any point in time. Also worth noting whenever I unplug it from the computer or just from the charger, the phone will power off completely as in not be recognized by the computer. So, any ideas? I'm thinking of just selling the phones as is maybe for a 150 total for everything but I'd like to fix that myself if it's just something as small as a battery issue. the volume up button and the home button turn the phones off though, is what really perplexes me. Thanks for any insight, much appreciated for the read and have a good Thanksgiving.

I have to faulty digitizers, or 2. the one battery I have between them is completely shots, or 3. a combination of one and two as well as some other s*** going on.

dang man, id just sell em unless you want a winter project. I just bought a Sunfire sub that has some issues for a winter project, but thats because im a dork and i like that kind of stuff. Anyways, my opinion is just to sell it and get something else that works. I had a buddy offer me a HUGE pile of phones and their respective parts to fix them for like $200 and i gave a hard no.
Damn never heard of such an issue? I'd had hoped that the volume up key as well as the home button both restarting (or, turning the LED off for about ten seconds at least) would have been some kind of dead giveaway, if not just a straight up common occurrence, haha. I even got ANOTHER S6 last night from a homie (asked her if I could borrow the battery lol, she just gives me the whole broken phone) to try and switch out parts, which I'm gonna give a quick shot at tonight at least. But man, no responses other than hours has me quite discouraged :') lol thanks for the time to read at least tho my dude ?
