USB host - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I got a question I keep reading that the transformer has no USB host support for like Xbox controllers and stuff but I swore it had a micro USB I could be wrong I do not own one yet. But if it doesn't have USB slots is there a way to hook up stuff like that or are you forced to get the dock that I do not want

No USB on the tablet. Micro SD card is available
The are supposed to be releasing a USB adaptor

So when they realease the adaptor we will be able to hook up controllers and stuff and acctually take advantage of what 3.1 has to offer ?

You are able now to use USB host on the tablet, if you buy a female to female adapter and hook it up to the charging cable. At least this is what I read here.

Almost nothing works that way because there is no power line in the charging cable.

I guess you need to have the laptop accessory to take advantage of USB controllers ect?

So I have heard that they are going to be releasing a USB adapter is this true or are they going to force you to buy the dock for host functions

The adapter has been confirmed, but nobody at Asus could give me a date when it will be available.
edit: Apparently a german online shop is listing the usb adapter for 20 Eur and has the item in stock: cyberport.de/notebook/zubehoer/kabel-adapter/adapter---usb/1D09-36X/asus-usb-extension-kit-fuer-eee-pad-transformer.html
Hopefully it's coming to Amazon soon!

has anyone teated that USB adapter from that German website?

it's been released a couple of days ago. take a look at this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1155196&page=10
there are a couple of pictures
so far it's not available in the us though (mainly europe afaik)

just bought this from b&h
www bhphotovideo com

[Q] HP Touchpad OTG support?

So simple question, does anyone know (have tasted) if Touchpad supports OTG like for example Galaxy S2?
I bought these from DX: http://www.dealextreme.com/p/micro-usb-on-the-go-host-otg-adapter-pair-50774 and is working great with my Galaxy S2, but can it be used for Touchpad?
First, it is TESTED.
Second, Nope no native support yet, might have to wait till android port is complete, might take a couple of months.

One of those newbs who can't post links eh? I'll fix that...
http://rootzwiki.com/showthread.php?4332-Functional-USB-Host-on-Touchpad
The Touchpad doesn't have a powered port is the only problem - so provide power to whatever device and you're good to go.
what about a external HDD with its own powe supply, will it work..
unfortunately, i'm still waiting for my TP so cant test
Does it work with your HD2?
If so, there is no reason not to work with TP
(Hint: HD2 has same kind of usb host capabilities that needs external power supply)
So was it ever established whether or not USB OTG works on the Touchpad? Sorry to necro-post, but I picked up a touchpad during the firesale, have been loving it with first WebOS then CM9, and since I ordered a USB OTG adapter for my GSIII (this friday!) I was curious if there was anything I needed to know about using OTG with the HPTP.
It just works with a powered adapter. Nothing more to it then that. I've plugged almost everything into mine!

Thanks for the help. My OTG cable and other things from Monoprice should've come yesterday, so hopefully I'll have them tomorrow. By powered adapter, do you mean something like a powered USB hub? Although I didn't get that OTG cable for the touchpad, it'd be a nice treat to be able to use it with that, it would definitely make moving movies around a lot easier.
EDIT (10/19): Dangit, they didn't come today. I'll have to see what's up, because they've been in my area for a while according to tracking just not coming.
Yes, u will have to use either a powered USB hub or get power from a USB charger that doesn't have the data +/- pins shorted internally (purchased or modified). If u plug device (ie phone) into charger and it says "ac charging" that means the data pins are shorted.

Alright, thanks. I think I need to get a powered hub for my laptop (which I am currently using as a desktop with external monitor and keyboard) so I there may be a happy coincidence here.
Also, just checked on my touchpad, and the HP charger says charging (AC) as well as my phone charger, which I think started life destined for some Blackberry.
The powered hub should work though, and that would make a great machine for typing and working in bed as opposed to my laptop burning my thighs off.

I just verified that if you get the Micro USB Host OTG Cable With USB power ($6 from AppleCable on Ebay) that Ramjet73 mentioned (or this one), it will work with any standard USB charger (ie the 1 Amp HTC or 2 Amp HP Touchpad Charger) because the USB Power Connector is Isolated. I also picked up Applecable's USB 2.0 3 Port Hub with data Sync Charger cable for $7 (I may try to modify it to be a USB OTG powered hub with this).
I will be updating the OTG thread I mentioned earlier. See attached:
I've never successfully used OTG. I've bought 2 cables.

I've received a bad one before. Cut it open to verify the id pin hadn't been tied to ground like it was supposed to be. I can verify that OTG is enabled with the CM9 Nightly and jcsullin's latest Cm10.

[Q] Asus USB adapter alternative?

hey everyone, so i have been reading around and there are alot of people talking about the usb extention for the asus transformer.
Here is my thought: what if you used your existing usb charger/data cable and then but a female to female usb adapter on it? this has just been in my mind for a while and i saw that the adapter would cost around 3 instead of 20 for the asus branded one.
has anyone tried this or should i just get the adapter made by asus?
For $3 why not just try it and let us know?
I'm pretty sure this will not work, since the adapter has additional circuits to put the tf in usb otg (on the go) mode, which is the usb host functionality in plain english.
Yo will need an usb 3.0 cable. It won't work with a normal (2.0) one
As alluded to above, 2 different things.
The usb3 cable is an extension, the adapter is a hub (adding usb to the tab).

[Q] Can I use a portable hard drive with the note?

Hi, looking to upgrade to a better tablet, currently between the Note 10.1 and an Asus TF300.
I really want to get the note but need to be able to use a hard drive for taking my movie collection with me when I'm travelling.
For Asus TF line, this is as easy as hooking up drive via the docks USB port. In my case I have a Seagate GoFlex drive, which is also powered via the same USB connection.
What I'm wondering is if anyone who has a Note 10.1 and a USB adapter has had any success in connecting up a drive and whether or not it works, powers up, mounts, etc?
I know NTFS is not supported by the Note so willing to root and use an NTFS mounting app from Google Play or format to FAT32 if necessary.
I'm going to be getting new tablet mid next week so need to know as soon as I can. Can't find any info on this anywhere, just general comments on thumb drives.
Any help would be very much appreciated.

Has anyone been able to try this?
Had a quick play with the Note 10.1 yesterday in Carphone Warehouse, really like it. Spoke to a Samsung rep who was there but she didn't know either.
If not I'd have to get a Seagate Satellite Wireless drive to stream movies to tablet. As that's around £140 - £180 extra (for 500GB) that increases the total price dramatically as I could just use existing portable drive on the TF300 (which is currently having Jelly Bean rolled out in the US, so UK won't be far behind).
Overall I prefer the note but this is really making it difficult to choose.
sadly I've not seen a USBOTG connector for the Note 10.1 yet. I do this on my S3 with no trouble at all, so as soon as I find an OTG cable for the Note I'll test this. Anyone out there know if the adapters for the Tabs are supposed to work? Rumor is that the HDMI connectors do.

I've read in a few different places that the Tab OTG cable still works fine as it's supposed to be the same 30 pin connector. I was going to get one this I saw on Amazon:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Connection-...VZ70/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1345401137&sr=8-6
Less bulky and shouldn't get in the way when putting tablet on a stand.
Thanks for testing it if/when you get a cable. It's definitely appreciated.
Ordered one (slightly different as I'm in the US), should be here in a day or two. Will report back!
I haven't tried my OTG adapter yet, but I think the original Tab 10.1 adapter should work. You may need a hard drive that is externally powered - the tab may not be able to bus-power a drive.

Yes, same results as an externally-powered hard drive. NTFS might require some sort of hacks.
it doesn't support the small external hard desk, i personally tried the WD my passport 1 TB and another one with 500gb, it doesn't power it up, however i have a usb otg with a power supply input and it did power up my passport but its useless this way, where the T700 asus keyboard dock powers up any external small hard drive why samsung ! the note is not yet a replacement of a laptop unless it supports hard drives

Thought this might be the case
If I get this tablet, looks like I may need to get a powered hub if using tablet near a power supply.
Not ideal though, may have to get a Seagate Satellite 500GB drive which can stream to the tablet via it's own wifi hotspot. Extra cost I'd have liked to avoided (£130+ in the UK).
Thanks for letting me know though, helps my decision making process (a little at least) on which tablet to get.

What I don't like about the seagate satellite type drives is the fact that you can only use them with pictures, music & stuff like that no file transfer.
That does suck, but my main concern is being able to access my media.
Shame about the extra cost tho.
In the mean time think I'll get a powered usb hub for an existing drive, which will have to do as a short term solution as this will be connected to tv via hdmi adapter at some point.

I just tried this to confirm...
It wont power my 500gb WD drive on its own with both the generic otg cable and official samsung usb attachment.
Although my 16gb thumb drive had no issues with either connector.. Just watched some of The Raid Redemption in 720p fine.
Worse case pick up a couple of 64gb thumbs on sale for traveling.
Lol, oddly enough I did just get a 64gb flash drive now also.

Just got my USB OTG adapter. It connects the Samsung connector port to a USB femail port. When I try to plug in a portable hard drive there is a message that "High power USB device connected" but the drive doesn't spin and isn't mounted. Tried an Ethernet adapter and same thing. I have a powered USB hub and I connected to that and though the hard drive spins it isn't recognized/mounted. Tried connecting a USB flash drive and that isn't mounted.
Ideas?

portable dvd drive
Using otg adaptor I bought off amazon able to use USB 7 port hub optical mouse and 64gb USB drive.
to work using USB host controller app from play store portable dvd drive no work so rooted my 10.1 32gb note 2014 tried the different otg mount apps to many to name still no work have proper codecs what i need is a generic Linux driver for portable usb dvd burner. I don't have a Linux system up and running yet and virtual Linux on windows just doest cut it so if anyone has drivers to send me would be happy to test them out on my note 3 10.1 2014 30th wifi only have Verizon and my plan let's me use my phone as hot spot no charge. Also can connect log tech optical mouse and keyboard combo through hub no problems. Thanks in advance
P.S. usb stick mount for usb flash drives seems to be the most stable app for my 64gb flash drive
P.S.S. I've tested 5 mini hubs with my note the one that works best is designed for Linux OS it's generic and bought it at Fry's electronics for 8.99

[Q] USB extension for Sandisk Dual USB?

I picked up a SanDisk Dual USB drive, and although it works well, I was disappointed to see it's a bit too big to work with the bumper case I use. I briefly considered modifying the case, but think my best option is getting a short USB extension cable... Though I thought that would be a simple and cheap solution. After a little looking around though, I'm not sure I know what micro usb extension I need - MHL, OTG, Power? As best as I can tell, I need what they're marketing as a micro to micro OTG extension - but if someone can confirm, I'd appreciate it. My concern comes from comments on some saying they don't work for charging or syncing (search for "YCS Basics 6 inch USB Micro male to female OTG extension cable" on amazon), but it sounds like the mhl cable is just for HDMI.
Help?
Just get a small USB OTG cable. I use one sometimes with my Corsair OTG drive and it works great. Not all of my cases will let me lug the micro USB in easily hence why I have a small OTG cable. I can post pictures if you would like.

Can you return it for the new USB 3.0 model? Supposedly they made the uUSB connector longer to work with more cases.

Really? That would have been great... but no. Or maybe... but probably not worth it to me at this point. I got a standard OTA cable and have just been living with it that way. And I haven't looked, but I'd have to think they're charging a premium for the 3.0 enhancement. I bought mine during one of those Christmas sales, so I got it real cheap at the time. Thanks though.

I havent used them but some companies are making flash drive with usb c and usb a if all you want it for is a flash drive you can get a flash drive that works without an adapter
Be careful of hard adapters, they (Ha Ha, YOU) will break themselves or your port
Edit, these may not be OTG also. Yet similar OTG 90* adapters have similar drawbacks/ benefits.
There are 2 like this on Amazon.

I am going to get this soon.
This right angle horizontal, is not yet reviewed, but a sister item with right angle (up) is.
Frys usually stocks this style in micro, maybe a C version is there?
I have used one! The one I use works only with USB flash drives that are fat32 format! The brand of mine is belkin and I bought it from best buy!
Very nice to use this for watching movies and not having to use up storage on the device.
Only drawback is that the usb-c port does not allow you to use wired headphones at the same time! So, I had to go wireless Bluetooth headset!

Curious question. Since this is one of the first phones where the add-on option comes into play (mods), couldnt one devise an external ssd drive moto mod? Either that or one of those all-in-one adapter mods where i can plug in older tech? Im always skeptical about destroying the one & only port on the phone anyway.
In case anyone only wants flash storage I purchased the Sandisk Dual ultra and it works great, usb c and a usb a connector.
Also only have to carry one thing as opposed to two. I bought mine with 128gb storage, preformatted to fat32, was simply plug and play.
