[Q] USB extension for Sandisk Dual USB? - X 2014 Accessories

I picked up a SanDisk Dual USB drive, and although it works well, I was disappointed to see it's a bit too big to work with the bumper case I use. I briefly considered modifying the case, but think my best option is getting a short USB extension cable... Though I thought that would be a simple and cheap solution. After a little looking around though, I'm not sure I know what micro usb extension I need - MHL, OTG, Power? As best as I can tell, I need what they're marketing as a micro to micro OTG extension - but if someone can confirm, I'd appreciate it. My concern comes from comments on some saying they don't work for charging or syncing (search for "YCS Basics 6 inch USB Micro male to female OTG extension cable" on amazon), but it sounds like the mhl cable is just for HDMI.
Help?

Just get a small USB OTG cable. I use one sometimes with my Corsair OTG drive and it works great. Not all of my cases will let me lug the micro USB in easily hence why I have a small OTG cable. I can post pictures if you would like.

Can you return it for the new USB 3.0 model? Supposedly they made the uUSB connector longer to work with more cases.

Really? That would have been great... but no. Or maybe... but probably not worth it to me at this point. I got a standard OTA cable and have just been living with it that way. And I haven't looked, but I'd have to think they're charging a premium for the 3.0 enhancement. I bought mine during one of those Christmas sales, so I got it real cheap at the time. Thanks though.

They look like they are Shanzhai (Chinese knockoffs) rather than Samsung made, but if they worked as they advertise, it'd be good price. I just don't want to spend 30-40 dollars on the official connection kit.
Amazon reviews are mixed, so I was hoping somepne on XDA had tried them. All feedback would be appreciated. Thanks!

I have one and it works, However they have a switch to change between SD and USB so you cant use both at the same time
Do they work with custom roms as well?
I have this one www_dot_dealextreme_dot_com/p/multifunctional-card-reader-usb-hub-for-samsung-galaxy-tab-10-1-black-max-16gb-109775?item=48
(replace "_dot_" by the "." Engine of the forum do not allow to me post the normal links). Works very well! If you connect it to the AC adapter (it has short cable for the USB AC adapter) you can use SD CARD and USB Bar/keyboard/mouse at the same time! If you do not connect it to AC you can use any one port because of the device power limitation.

I have ordered an extra USB cable and a cable to USB port (for gamepad connection), the extra cable was a very tight fit. Had to force it to much in my opinion. How's that with this accessorie?
I have an official samsung one that has never been opened that I probably will never use that I'm looking to get rid of for $10 shipped. I exclusively use my tablet in the car so its docked 100% of the time and therefore can't really use an accessory that relies on the docking port

[Q] External USB Adapter

I've heard that the External USB Adapter from ASUS is a notoriously difficult beast to locate. It's marketed to plug into a bare tablet and provide a Host USB connector. But, would it also work in the charging port of the keyboard dock giving a second Host USB port? (Yes, I know a hub would do this. But If one wants this device to connect USB storage to a bare tablet, would it also do double duty and work with the dock?)
It certainly sounds possible. Mostly because I think the internals of the keyboard dock are a hub already basically.
One usb going to the card reader, one going to the usb port, one to the keyboard function, and another as a passthrough to the proprietary data port.
So by using the usb adapter you are just converting the otherwise unused data port into another usb port.
since there both 40 pin connecters i imagine that would work

That is also my assumption, but we all know what assuming does. All depends if all the signals are passed through, and if there are any lag or transmission line issues.
Has anyone tried this to verify if it does or does not work?

external hds and otg...

looking to go completely wireless with a hard drive for the note pro for movies, music, ebooks, etc. i bought a toshiba 500gb porta-harddrive (UNpowered) and a usb2 otg cable... but its not quite working because the drive doesn't pull enough power to run (it just sits there ticking). when i plug the drive into a powered usb hub and the hub into the otg, it works fine; but then i'm still tethered by the hub power cord.
anyone have a completely wireless setup that works and care to share what equipment they're using? i'm thinking a usb3 otg cable might do the trick, but haven't been able to find one locally, and want to be certain before dealing with the shipping hassle.
thanks,

The additional conductors added in the wider micro USB 3.0 cable are for data, not power. What you could do is get a USB battery...

thanks for the response. two things:
1) can you look at the fcc sticker on the hard drive and tell me what the power draw is? it should say something like 5V+- XXX mA. i'm curious about how many amps it pulls. i think the problem with mine is that it lists 1000mA, which exceeds both usb2 (500mA) and usb3 (900mA) specs.
2) is your tablet rooted? not sure it matters, but i'm reading mixed opinions on the matter in the fora, and it might be a factor.
i've also formatted exfat and that didn't seem to fix it, and it works fine attached to a powered hub, so it looks like its a power issue.

yes, but usb3 allows for more power to be drawn then usb2 according to the specs. turns out not enough for the hard drive either way unfortunately so the battery might be the way to go. would need a 'y' cable though since there is no power input for the hard drive.
now i'm thinking of just getting one of those hard drive/battery/wi-fi hotspot combos that seagate or corsair makes.
thanks

My two setups
Seagate wireless plus 1Tb
As long as the battery of the hdd has enough power to maintain its wifi service this is the absolutely no wires solution. Easy to operate but slow in terms of data transfer. Fast enough to watch Hd-video though.
Hebron connector
EasyACC powerpack 10000mA
Toshiba STOR.E basic 500gb ext. USB hdd
In this setup there are cables.
Powerpack to connectorä
Hdd to connector
Connector to Note
Advantage of this setup is that I can read sd Card, connect USB stick, mouse,
And it's still just a little more than a handful of equipment. The Weight is not worth talking about

thats exactly what i was planning on using it for. i've never been able to stream anything via wifi to the tablet (netflix is okay, i mean from my local drives), though, as it always buffers and stutters making video playback unwatchable. probably just my home network, but for almost 200$, i'm a little gunshy about this option.

will try this. cables connecting the devices i don't mind... i just don't want to be tied to a wall outlet. especially if there are no walls available. :cyclops: i went with the 16000 easyacc for $50, and the 9pin usb otg y cable for $9; so that setup is much cheaper then the wifi/harddrive/battery device.
final outcome
thanks to everyone who responded with suggestions.
so i ended up getting a power pack, and an otg y-cable to hook up to the hard drive. i actually bought two otg cables, one usb3 9pin and a usb2 5pin. the usb2 had a micro female connector for the power, while the usb3 had a standard male connector.
the usb3 otg didn't work. plugged the power pack in, plugged the harddrive in, plugged it into the tablet.... nothing.
the usb2 otg did work, luckily the power pack had a male-female adapter. tablet recognized the hard drive was present, but said it was blank, and es file explorer popped up a warning that otg only supported fat32 (hard drive was originally exfat). so after reformatting to fat32, everything seems to work well enough.
i don't know why the usb3 cable doesn't work, it may just be a dud but i have nothing else to test it with. all in all, an annoying and frustrating experience getting this to work. i don't see why anyone actually thinks these sorts of tablets are going to become laptop replacements when basic functionality requires so much teeth pulling.
so it goes,

[Review] Meenova USB-C Dash Micro, OTG Adapter (lots of pictures)

Disclaimer: I was given these items at a large discount for my honest and unbiased feedback/review.
Dash Micro G3 Type-C MicroSD Card Reader:
The Dash Micro is made using an aluminum casing that has a nice solid feel to it. It is compact enough to fit in an included silicon key chain so you won’t lose it while on the go. I’ve used this with my Nexus 6P since it was first released, and I haven’t had any issues with it fitting my cases so far. I primarily use my larger Speck Candyshell case on my Nexus 6P, and the Dash Micro fits perfectly without forcing in it. The microSD card slot is spring loaded so popping a card out is a breeze. You do need to use your finger nail to push it in, but that’s still better than physically pulling it out. Meenova claims this will read cards up to 200GB which I verified with my Sandisk 200GB microSD card that I have. They also said it will fit cases that are up to 3mm thick which is the large majority of them. I have no complaints with the solid build and overall feel of the card reader.
I like the included keychain/holder which is offered in other colors if you break yours. I haven’t seen any issues with my other G3 Micro that is on my keyring along with my Yubi key, and other small things. I have 2 of these card readers now, so I keep one in my car, and one at home. I have a dash camera in my car that uses microSD cards, so it’s nice to be able to replay the video on my phone so I don’t have to do it on the small screen of my dash camera. My Nexus 6P always recognizes the card read the first time and doesn’t try to charge it like some other accessories I’ve used in the past.

Multimeter:
Since the first issues with Type-C cables/adapters arose I have been using a multimeter to check all of my A-C cables even if they are already ‘approved’ by Benson Leung or other people. It never hurts to verify things for yourself rather than ruin your phone or in some cases a Pixel Book due to faulty cables. These can hopefully be mitigated through the use of a multimeter like this one.
The device itself is about the size of a large flash (slightly bigger) featuring 2 input ports to, and it plugs directly into your charger. I like how you can see inside the multimeter through its dark grey clear plastic casing. I’m not sure how durable this device will be given it’s build, but I haven’t seen any issues so far. I used my other multimeter to verify readings using different cables with my Nexus 6P and S7 Edge all of which were consistent. The multimeter can only handle up to 9V, so if you want to use it on devices that support QC 3.0 or even some QC 2.0 in the future be it might not work. I have yet to see a phone charge at 12V, but I do have a battery pack that charged at 12V, so I can’t check the current using this mutlimeter without risking it failing. I would have liked it to support the higher voltages like my other one does, but that’s fine because I can use this one for my Nexus 6P, and the other one to check my QC enabled devices. Overall I’m happy with this little device, and I’m sure it will get used frequently just like my other one.
Pictures:
MicroUSB-C OTG Adapter:
I own a few different sets of these MicroUSB-C OTG adapters from different companies including Techmatte, Tronsmart, and now Meenova. The Meenova is the only one of them that’s made out of aluminum despite being fairly large compared to the other two. Like the Dash Micro this adapter is made out of aluminum giving it the best feel out of all 3. I tested the adapter with one of my microUSB OTG flash drives which worked flawlessly as expected despite looking funny due to the adapter & flash drives combined lengths.
Next, I wanted to verify that the correct resistor was used in this adapter due to earlier issues with companies not using the proper one. I plugged it into my Meenova/Tronsmart multimeters along with a short cable, and it showed the phone pulling the proper current. Now, before you go charging your device with these adapters Benson Leung has shed some more light on their approved uses. According to Benson Leung (https://twitter.com/Laughing_Man/status/692931998218895360) the host should never use an adapter for anything other than OTG i.e. it should not be used for charging. I know many people still use them for charging, but it’s good to know they aren’t intended for that. Overall this is still a great adapter that does what it says by providing OTG support to your Nexus 6P/Type-C device. It is my understanding that other MicroUSB-C adapters don’t work with OTG which I’ll have to verify with my other two when I get home today.

for Pixel C, Chromebook Pixel, MacBook and other devices that support USB Type-C and USB PD, there are charge through hubs that can fast charge the laptops and tablets
also if you have Microsoft Lumia 950 phone, that supports PD as well
those devices allow the phone to swap data and power roles separately
the dongle you pointed to is a bad idea
the MacBook, for example, has an accessory that allows it to have an extra USB Type-A port and an HDMI port but still charge the laptop.
that hub is a USB PD charge through hub.
but it won't work with Nexus because Nexus doesn't support PD.
Perfect. I guess a regular otg cable will suffice. I figured I'd ask the one person who's know. Thank you very much for your time. I've made purchases based on your recommendations
Have you reviewed otg cables?

there is no such thing as 'otg' for USB Type-C
the On The Go spec doesn't apply to Type-C
instead you have something called 'Legacy Device Adapter' cables
Ahh. Makes sense.

That seems like he's referring to something that is against spec that he wrote about on his G+ page. You can't have a Type-C to female A adapter (see below), maybe it was just the way he worded it. I assume he's not referring to the link I posted below but rather it's inverse. I don't see any mention of micro USB like the reference I posted, so I'm still left here a little confused.

It was a USB OTG cable with power passthru. Either way, USB OTG isn't a thing anymore with Type C. I have the little type C to micro usb adapters, they however are not USB OTG adapters as they say in your pictures. They are merely USB type c - microusb adapters.
The one i linked to in the beginning of the chat was this: (i'm not sure if that link worked or not) http://usbfever.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=77_316&products_id=2759 - What I thought was a USB OTG with power passthrough.... Something I used with my Nexus 6 and a portable HDD that required more power.

I would have liked it to support the higher voltages like my other one does, but that’s fine because I can use this one for my Nexus 6P, and the other one to check my QC enabled devices. Overall I’m happy with this little device, and I’m sure it will get used frequently just like my other one.

Not a problem, but please don't quote the whole OP with true pictures if you have any other questions let me know. I have 18 cases I can test it on

OTG adapter

Anyone know of any good adaptors similar to the OTG which would allow to connect USB memory sticks via the USB-C port.

Huh?G I'm using the Note 7 adapter. According to another site some OTG cables don't work with the Z so beware.
Found this on Google store. May go for it unless anyone's already tried with no luck. https://store.google.com/product/usb_type_c_to_usb_standard_a_adapter

Not sure if the actual term for it is OTG as that's what the adaptor was called for Microusb to USB A connection.

Thanks but that's from the U.S. I'm in the uk
I havent used them but some companies are making flash drive with usb c and usb a if all you want it for is a flash drive you can get a flash drive that works without an adapter
Be careful of hard adapters, they (Ha Ha, YOU) will break themselves or your port
Edit, these may not be OTG also. Yet similar OTG 90* adapters have similar drawbacks/ benefits.
There are 2 like this on Amazon.

I am going to get this soon.
This right angle horizontal, is not yet reviewed, but a sister item with right angle (up) is.
Frys usually stocks this style in micro, maybe a C version is there?
I have used one! The one I use works only with USB flash drives that are fat32 format! The brand of mine is belkin and I bought it from best buy!
Very nice to use this for watching movies and not having to use up storage on the device.
Only drawback is that the usb-c port does not allow you to use wired headphones at the same time! So, I had to go wireless Bluetooth headset!

Curious question. Since this is one of the first phones where the add-on option comes into play (mods), couldnt one devise an external ssd drive moto mod? Either that or one of those all-in-one adapter mods where i can plug in older tech? Im always skeptical about destroying the one & only port on the phone anyway.
In case anyone only wants flash storage I purchased the Sandisk Dual ultra and it works great, usb c and a usb a connector.
Also only have to carry one thing as opposed to two. I bought mine with 128gb storage, preformatted to fat32, was simply plug and play.
