Well, bad for me to be more specific. Terrible battery life, overheats, random reboots every day, constant dropped calls. The only problem I don't have that many others complain about is screen bleed. Very little on mine.

Have you rooted your phone and removed the TMobile bloatware? This seems to have done wonders for most.
Anyone know if I can add another line to my family plan to be eligible for the $50 price? I was then thinking about cancelling the line the next day and just taking my sim card and putting it into the g2x. This will end up costing me $250 for the phone (early termination fee of $200 + $50 for cost of phone). Seems like it'll be much cheaper than paying the out of contract price of $499 from TMobile. Am I missing anything?

Existing customers should be everything the same except 100 vs 50. Dunno about the creative personalize plan though. Oh and the 35 activation is a credit back to account, so you may get stuck on that...

I did a complete system erase, and its seems cooler and better battery life...Some said that it comes thinking the battery is 1200 size, and not the 1500 it is actually and they causes some discharge and charge issues, full erase then recognizes 1500 Dunno except it seem helpful...vs a placebo.
Other guy is suggesting the T-mobile my account is a hickup creator, so I am gonna try to do a rebuild erase, and that be the first software I update.
Complete system erase if not already tried....should be first thing.

Its called the Geek Squad Black Tie Protection Plan!
Its only $10 a month and provides unlimited replacements for your device if it is damaged due to dropping it, water, etc. Now thats one heck of a case and you can't even feel it when its on the phone!
But seriously, I usually put cases on my phones because I am worried about damage. But for $10 a month (the cost of 2 drinks at a coffee house) you can stop worrying about getting a case for your device and just use it as the companies intended: naked. This was an offer I just couldn't pass up.
Has anyone else gotten the protection plan from Best Buy?
On a side note, when I was picking my device up from Best Buy the sales person said "What, you want me to price match AT&T? OK!" I didn't even ask him but he just said that and did it for me anyway, saving me $30! Usually the people at Best Buy are annoying crabby stuck-up brats but this guy was very helpful and saved me some cash.

I have it, too, but there is a downside - at least there was with my iPhone 3GS when I had to use the protection plan. During the first 30 days of owning a phone they'll replace it in-store. After 30 days, at least for the iPhone, they gave me a crappy dumb-phone loaner, and it took almost a week to get a replacement in.
I still have it on my captivate, but hope I don't have to use it. Having a plain phone for a week after being used to something better is a hard transition.
will they replace it if it still works but just looks fugly?

Yeah, you could throw it on the ground and shatter it to pieces and get it replaced.
And about the dumb phone, I have a Nexus so I can always fallback to that.
do you have to buy the phone through them to qualify?
This couldn't possibly sound like more of a paid advertisement.
Its not advertisement. I have it. Though i did get my captivate on release date from them so as far as i know u have to buy phone from them. May be wronge because.it is a monthly pay service i dont see why where u get the phone mattering.
Only thing sucks is it is another bill. U can't have taken out ur cell bill.

Er, its not. I hate Best Buy with a passion. I never shop there unless its something like a cell phone where you can't find it for less anywhere else. I'm simply saying that their cell phone protection plan is better than any one I have ever seen. Unlimited replacements for $9 a month is a heck of a deal.
I could argue that 99% of the posts here about people drooling over their devices sound like advertisements. Maybe I just like the service offered?

it's $125 deductible. i got that insurance from ATT, and for 5 a month for 2 years and 125, it would be like paying the "discount" 200 for another brand new phone! which isn't too bad if i kill it within the first few months
I got mine from BB 2 days ago and I am thinking on getting the insurance indeed...this things are awesome but oh so delicate but I want to get ALL the details before commiting.

True, and the BestBuy deal is not much better. $10 per month for 2 years is is $240. The only reason these insurance plans are worth it at all, is because you can't go buy a new one at the subsidized price again - not until about month 18. And at month 18 you can get anything you want for $200.
It is gambling - they are betting you won't break the phone, and you are betting you will. They win most of the time, or they wouldn't be offering this insurance.
SquareTrade covers smartphones for $6 per month with a $50 deductible if your claim is damage related. No deductible for other claims.
Me, I use Amex card to buy my phone. I get double the warranty and 90 days accident coverage. Oh, and cash back too. Good enough for me.

Lets see, a $20 case makes your phone larger, doesn't give it 100% protection against dropping it, or damaging it with water. Or for $10 a month (which I can cancel at any time) I can get protection from dropping my device, spilling water on it, or "accidentally" throwing it under a car to get it replaced due to bricking the device. Hm, seems like my $120 a year (which is nothing if you think about it being as it is paid at $10 a month) goes a lot further than your $20 case which *may* protect your device from damage while at the same time adding bulk and not really being a guarantee.
Yeah, I'll take my $10 a month insurance. Did you cancel your car insurance and instead just cover it with a thick foam too?
BTW, I'm still annoyed you never answered me in that previous thread about how much of an iFanboy I am

With the Best Buy plan you pay $10 a month, no deductible, and cancel at any time. So I could destroy the device in 3 months and get it replaced and in the end it will cost me $30. I can also then cancel my contract with them. Seems like a $30 well spent when you consider that this device is $500 out of contract.

The offer is for new service plan only. It's marketing and has nothing to do with the merits of the phone which remains one of the best on the market. GPS seems to really be the only problem which is annoying but I am not sure there is any phone out there without problems anyways.
Phone is great, I loved mine.... just couldn't justify a 2 year contract and $230 (Best Buy) with the flaky gps. But $50... thats a great deal. Just thought others considering returning their Captivates because of the GPS should be aware of this. It might be a factor. (Yes that's new contract only pricing.)

Just a heads up if you use the code 25rafpcver1 youll get $25 off 89.99 price, brings the price of the Captivate to $64.99 shipped. This code is good until 8/14. BTW this phone is ONLY good if you are either upgrading or getting new service, it does not qualify if you are getting the phone only.
Thanks for the heads up on the Amazon price. I bought mine from Amazon for $89.99 just 6 days before they dropped it to $49.99. Hopefully they'll refund me the $40 difference. If not I won't be too upset I suppose. This is a great phone for the $90 I got it for!

If you return your Captivate solely because of GPS issues - that's nuts. If you want a GPS product, get a TomTom. Besides, there's an excellent chance that this will be dealt with in an update. Samsung's got too much to lose to ignore this issue (as silly as I think it is).
I'm sure it will definitely be fixed soon. Running the I9000 rom on my phone now and the GPS locks in about 15 seconds.
First of all I got mine for free on the first day it came out from walmart lol, but I just wanted to let anyone with GPS issues know that the i9000s JM5 ROM upgrade has fixed my GPS from no-lock to a 10-20s lock with no blue circle (even inside the house). So if you head over to the captivate dev section I would highly suggest giving it a try!

Does Walmart.com/Letstalk charge a restocking fee in the case of a return? I didn't see any mention of a fee but I have never ordered a cell phone from Walmart.com.
Anyone else have trouble buying this? Amazon said AT&T required a deposit and Amazon can't process orders that need a deposit so it cancelled my order .___.
If you read over at the Galaxy S forum section (GT-i9000), the latest unofficial firmware(JG4) fixed almost all the issue that the current Galaxy S has. Therefore, a fix for the US versions (HOPEFULLY again hopefully) will come to fruition.
It's my last day to enroll in insurance for my Captivate.
How many of you have it on your phones? If something breaks and you do wind up making a claim, did you get a new phone or refurb?
I need to make a choice quickly and I'm leaning towards NOT getting it simply because at $5/mo and a $125 deductable, I think there are (or at least will be) better deals online for replacement and if it happens, I think I'd rather apply that towards a NEW phone.
Opinions?
I didn't enrol.
I got it. $5 isn't that big a deal. And a new phone for $125 ain't bad either. I've found that the att deductible goes down the older the phone gets.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using Tapatalk
I bought it at Best Buy, got their insurance.
I also pay the $5/mo, but I mainly got it because I was about to take a trip out of the country. I'll probably drop it after another month or 2
Do they give you a new phone for the $125 deductible or a refurb?
I didnt nor have I every paid for insurance on my phones. My wife got it for her iphone, but that was her doing.
Not enrolled here but I never buy extended warranties either. My philosophy is that if it lasts through whatever warranty they give me then I got enough use out of it and it was probably my fault it broke. Although I would recommend http://www.squaretrade.com/ if you need an extended warranty.
I have the insurance, I plan on sometime dropping my phone and saying it broke and get a newer phone...

I think I may just forget about the insurance.
I really hate the idea of insurance in general - One one hand, it's there if you need it, but on the other, you're paying LOTS of money for the chance something happens, and even if it does, you've still got a damn deductible. Makes me sick to think how much money I've wasted over the years on things like car insurance, never having had an accident - By the time I do need the insurance, I'm sure I will have pissed away enough money to have bought 3-4 new cars... Bad analogy considering the risk when driving, I know; but still.
Ugh...
As for the Cappy, it seems like AT&T wants customer retention so bad that they'll always get you into a contract renewal to get a new phone - somehow.

Car insurance is not just for your benefit. The part that is forced onto you in every circumstance is liability insurance and that protects other people and their property from you. When you have a loan out on a car, the forced collision and comprehensive coverage protects the bank from you totaling or damaging their collateral.
If you own your car outright, you can choose not to carry the coverage that would fix your car for you.

Unless you are getting scammed, you can pay full coverage for forty years here and not cover the replacement cost of a vehicle. Auto insurance is one that is well worth the cost, not to mention the medical costs that are the result of an accident. But back to the question at hand....extended warranties, or phone insurance in this case, are indeed high margin services which is why even walmart has begun bugging you every time you check out.

The captivate has always been a tier 2 phone so the.deductible is $125. Tier 2 used to be 200 then dropped to 150. As for the comment about the older the phone gets the cheaper the deductible is and I van say on some phones that is not the case. When I was running a blackberry bold 9000 it is still considered a tier2 phone and it is a 3 year old phone and I refused to pay 200, 150 or even 125 for that phone. I waited until my upgrade and got my captivate on launch day.

I opted for AT&T insurance instead of Squaretrade because AT&T covers theft. I have Squaretrade on all my kids' electronics (iPods, DSi's) to cover the accidental damage.
Well, I decided to wing it and not sign up for the coverage. I'll just have to keep my fingers crossed. I wound up getting my Cappy w/ 2 yr agreement for $59.99 (price match!) and can't see paying even the 3% per month of what the std $149 2yr agreement price was (plus then the $125 for a claim).
I do worry about theft, but I'm so strict about letting this thing out of my sight, I'm not too worried about it.
Just wondering if there were any downsides to upgrading to the G2x through amazon.com for $119.99? You can do an individual or family line upgrade.
I just bought from Amazon and returned it. The upside is that the price is low and you have a 30 day return period. The down side, IMO, is that you have to hold on to the line and phone for 6 months or pay $250. This meant that, in the next 6 months, I couldn't give my wife the G2x for her line and then get the Sensation, SGII, etc. for my line without being charged the $250. I could deal with breaking the contract if I had / wanted to do so, however, I didn't want any additional financial constraints. Just my .02¢

how would Amazon know that you gave it to your wife? And how would they know you are using a different device on your line if you just do a sim switch? do they have access to that carrier data?
also, does this mean you can upgrade phones every 6 months from amazon for their subsidized price?

I don't believe so! They still have to go through T-Mobile to upgrade or activate new line!
So if you don't quality or you already did an upgrade then I'm guessing they'll turn you down!
But I could be wrong, I guess someone needs to read the fine print and let us know!

This is incorrect. Amazon only stipulates that the line upgraded/opened/added must remain active for at least 6 months. There is absolutely nothing stopping you from swapping phones on that line, you just can't close the line/account before the 6 months are up. Unless you plan on jumping ship from Tmo before then, this shouldn't be a problem.
I used amazon for my G2X and their service is awesome. First phone suffered from reboots/lockups so I called them and they overnighted a replacement with return postage for the broken phone at absolutely no charge and no questions asked.

Well, that's not what I was told by the Amazon representative. I flat out told them that is what I was going to do...swap phones on that line and they told me I could not do it without being charged. Whether or not the rep was right or wrong, I do not know. I just knew that there was a high probability that I would be either swapping phones and/or bailing on the contract so I didn't want to get caught with any extra fees.
As for the service from Amazon, they were great and very responsive.
Here's the exact verbiage from Amazon's site:
When you purchase your device with service from AmazonWireless.com, we automatically pass along an instant discount from the carrier to you. Looks like I might have been misinformed, but would have still sent it back.
HTH
Hi Forum,
I just smashed my HD2 by dropping it on a concrete floor when getting out of my car. Dumbass. I was wondering, I am 15 or 16 months into a 24 month contract with o2 in the UK (via CarphoneWarehouse), do you think that they would allow me to get an early upgrade? I was thinking about bartering with them and trying to get what is essentially an 18 month contract, but locked into 24 months to make up the 6ish months I have left on my remaining contract.
Has anyone ever haggled with them, to any success? I have got insurance through my bank as part of a Current Account Plus but as I've claimed on it before it'll cost me £50 excess and it took several months to get my phone back.
I'm paying nearly £40 per month, so I'm not a 'penny-punter' but appreciate I'm not on the world's largest contract either.
Maybe if I took o2's own mobile phone insurance too, this could help sweeten the deal for them. I don't know. I'm really at a loss without a working phone and although my phone does work, it's really difficult to see through the almost shattered screen.
Kind regards.

Sorry I'm a little off topic here...
1. You guys in the UK can get insurance if you break your phone through the bank?!
2. Penny punter? lol what does that mean
I'm sure you can work something out with them. In Canada (which has a greedy telecom industry) stuff like that always happens and it's not the end of the world. In my experience it's more who will serve you than company policy. Don't sweat it too much.
Yeah, because I got what's called a Current Account Plus. I pay my bank £5 a month and I get a £300 interest free overdraft (which I am in a lot!), free mobile phone insurance which usually costs around £12-£24 a month and various other bits and pieces I'm not bothered about.
Also, a penny-punter is a term used in the betting industry. I work in a betting shop. It's someone that comes in a bets pennies per race (50p, 25p etc.) rather than pounds. You have to treat them the same as you would someone that was whacking £10,000 on a quadriplegic donkey. In short: a cheapskate.
Gonna give o2 a call when they wake up at 8am this morning and see what can be done. I'll post my results. I sincerely hope that they're feeling generous.
Update: o2 and Carphone Warehouse stonewalled me. Basically said that I should have taken *their* phone insurance (for £24 a month!) and now I'm stuck with a broken phone and eight months left on my contract.
O2 did say I could lower my contract to £26ish per month, however. Then, once I had been on my new tariff for a month I could buy out my contract at the new price. But that's still around £180.
I have about £150 for rainy days, and it is indeed looking very gloomy, so I think I am going to put that towards a phone that'll keep me going until January and then get something new, shiny and soon-to-be-obsolete-in-another-six-months-time handset.
I'm really sorry to hear that. Sounds like that place is playing with the rules...
Would you be interested in a blackberry pearl flip? I know it s blasphemy talking about a BB here but I'm willing to send it free of charge (i would ask you to pay shipping though). I will check for it when I get home.

I really appreciate the offer. It's much more generous than I was ever anticipating, but I am going to decline. Sorry to sound ungrateful but I am really needing a phone with a large display and gaming capabilities, because I work evenings and Sundays. My phone is the only source of relieving boredom.
Again, I really do appreciate the offer though! Thank you.
No worries! Good luck on your search.

It's swings and roundabouts.
With a bank account policy the premium is normally lower, but the excess can be higher and it's often not new for old.
With my O2 insurance it's £10 a month, £28 excess for any claim and I get a new phone the next working day.
I looked at the benefits from the £5 a month account Barclays are offering and other than the insurance for mobiles none of the benefits were of any use to me so I declined and stuck with my O2 insurance.
If I knew o2's was a tenner I would have gotten it myself. I'm sure they quoted 24 quid per month though which is why I declined. That is extortionate.

Blimey £24 I'd refuse to pay too!

For basic phones it's £7.50 a month, high end phones it's £10 a month and iPhones it's £10 or £15 depending on model.
Excess is £25 or from £50 for iPhones.
I was getting confused between claims, the £28 and next day delivery was through CPW with my HD.
HD2 was £25 and I think a week or 10 days, and I had to hand over the damaged handset to the courier.
Once I get my new phone, I'm going to call O2 and see if they'll hook me up. As the phone will be 'third party' though, I'll probably just stick with what I have and then get it when I get a new contract in Jan/Feb.
