Radio Reboot Cause and What to DO! - Thunderbolt General

OK Guys and Gals, Here is what is going on with the radio issue. No Matter WHAT radio combos you may be using. As some of you may know by my earlier posts I live in a huge 4G network and never get anything, but 4G and (3G only for a min on boot) This is why I didn't have ANY issue's until I got curious and wanted to try something. On our tbolts, if you try to make a call while in 3G the 3G will drop out until the call is over. I went back to froyo, got pissed and went strait back to GB (doesn't matter what Rom as all the dev have clearly stated) when I did go back to GB things were tight as usual. worked like a charm. I used it as I normally would and everything was fine. upon a self induced restart, before my phone had a chance to obtain 4G (still in 3G) I decided to make a test call to see if the 3G would drop. It didn't. Quickly after I ended the call the phone booted in to bootloader. Thank God I had removed the GB RUU because I don't have a card reader to remove the RUU. I forgot to mention I do have the latest Rom Mgr and was able to get into recovery and simply reboot. After that reboot I would get to my home screen, but this time the 3G only would come up and then reboot. Time after time of rebooting I tried other things such as toggle radio to just grab 4G, then the phone rebooted again! upon the next full boot I quickly moved the original froyo radio strait to the sd card. And yet another reboot. This time I got a Rom Mgr error and noticed that Rom mgr was no longer flashed!!! I flashed it real quick because I knew another reboot was on its way. Rom mgr flashed and I told it to boot in to recovery. Thank **** I flashed Rom manager because if not I would be in continuous boots like the unfortunate others. Once in recovery I Realized that I had told my phone to go in to recovery via Rom mgr. and if I did a restore, the phone would have booted back up with my froyo rom but with the GB radio! so I told CWR to just reboot so I could tell the phone to go into recovery via the pwr restart option (thus not restarting after I flashed my froyo recovery) Once recovery of my froyo rom was complete I used ADB to reboot bootloader and SUCCESS! Bottom line you can not make a call while on 3G with any of the current GB radios, you gotta be quick, Make sure ROM mgr is actually flashed!!!! and hopefully can dump the froyo radio on to your SD card before an inevitable reboot happens! and have some ADB knowledge. I'm certain this is whats going on! People make a call while in 3G and its all down hill from there. So dont bother with telling radio settings to stick with one band. Once this happens, there is no turning back. Any questions PM me. I'm glad I tried this out before Vaca tomorrow with a FUBAR Tbolt
Hope this helps developers somehow. Good luck!

I make calls all day on 3g

Only 3g here in new Mexico and no.issues here. Maybe its more to do with making a call while the phone is trying to.connect to the 4g.

Good point, but sometimes you never know when that may happen. Ie. Your driving in a 3g area while on a call, hang up and it doesn't get the 4g in the new area ur at and what I mentioned is most likely going to happen. *shrugs*

Maybe, but that one time when u make a 3g call n hang up, if your in a 4g area then, this could happen n Tom manager may drop its cwr flash n **** ya up. Just a heads up. Make a 3g call, but if ur going in a 4g area make damn sure u check rom Mgr to see if cwr is still flashed.

When you say radio combos are you referring to froyo radios also? Cause gb only has one radio.

So... if you have 4G disabled on the GB ROMs you shouldn't encounter the endless bootloop..?

Dope - make sure you post in the http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1098363 thread, telling us what your EMMC identifies itself as.
So far, nobody who has bricked their device has stepped forward and given us the magic numbers, so we cannot determine whether specific hardware plays a role in bricking.

Unless you got another tbolt laying around if u aren't as fortunate as I was with this BS

Leaving for Florida in a few hours n everything is packed up. Ill report once I'm there if not too busy. Thanks for the link!

I ran a GB rom and radio for over a week set to only 3G and I am in a STRONG 4G area. Made many calls and had no issue.
*edit: Correct me if I'm wrong but your data (3G) drops when in a call, when set to 3G only, due to the fact that you can't have simultaneous data and voice. That is what 4G (LTE) is providing. I open and close the browser a couple of times or toggle airplane mode and it comes back.

Not my understanding...
I've put mine in 3G only and was still able to use voice and data.
Voice uses 1x...
Not until Voice over LTE will that be accurate...LTE is data only at this point.
Turn off data and you can still make a call, send and receive SMS/MMS.

Problem with network set to auto gsm/wcdma

I'm having problems when my network is set to auto gsm/wcdma. The phone will get stuck when it switches and I lose service. This has been going on ever since I rooted my phone. I've tried several different ROMS, with their suggested radio flashed and the only way I keep service is if I manually set it to gsm mode only. The problem with that is the internet incredibly slow, which is annoying. Is anyone else having this problem? I'd like to be able to just use the phone without having to worry about losing service.

Only thing I touch in there is what I've said above.
Tried using wcdma only. Then my friend called my gfs phone and asked for me. So back to slow internet and gsm only. I'm about to smash this phone and get it replaced by best buy protection plan. It would be nice for the phone to work without having to do a bunch of extra things.

I had a similar issue here in San Francisco... I believe it's because we're in an area with a 850mhz and 1900mhz overlay. I kept bouncing back and forth between the two. Some areas such as South San Francisco and crossing into the East Bay I'd bounce between "H" and "3G" ... and voice was a mess.
The way I got around it was to completely restore to off-the-shelf condition, and then re-root, re-flash the stock ATT rooted rom, and my problems vanished.
Even when I had my iPhone I had to reprogram my phone to prefer 850mhz here in the city, and manually switch to 1900 when I'd leave the city. AT&T's implementation of the intertwined 850\1900 in san Francisco is still fairly young, and it's pretty bad.

Oh, I've already tried to do that. I just leave it in GSM only mode and it has no problems, except slow internet...
I just tried flashing the ROOTED stock rom, no go. Changed APN settings, nothing. Now after trying to restore backup of revolution 4g rom, clockwork locks up and I have to boot back into this stockish rom. And the internet works. WTF I'm about to just smash this phone with a sledge hammer, get it replaced by best buy's protection plan, and leave the new one stock.
I've noticed this multiple times, on different ROMs/radios. But tbh, I've noticed it on my last 3 devices with ATT as well. There are times, usually when bouncing back and forth between networks, where I just can NOT call out, and when I call my phone it rings on the calling end, but my phone never rings. I've chalked this up to ATT sucking... I've learned to live with it, if you need me that bad leave a voicemail and I'll call you back.
Also - There are multiple times that I've called my fiance (who has an iPhone 3GS) and it's rings on my end, but never rings on her end. This tells me that this problem is DEFINITELY not device specific

Data connection dropped for no reason

This is starting to bug me..... for no reason the 4g connection and even when I turn off the mobile network, wait a few minutes and turn it back on, it still wont work until I reboot the phone. Sometimes rebooting it doesn't work and I have to pull the battery.
Anyone know whats causing this? When this is happening I see the ^ arrow on the 4g connection lit up like a christmas tree but nothing is uploading and theres no data connection....... HELP!
Mine dropped Last night for the first time. When I first got the phone it flip from 3g to 4g at my job. Last night finally went dead. I rebooted and still no network. Then I used the new LTE switch to keep it @3g only. It worked.

Hey Stoneskin,
I live in Hawaii and I have the very same issue as well. I picked up 4g easily in the "so called" extended 4g coverage region when I first got the TB. Then about the middle of last week, poof, no more 4g except for in the true 4g areas. My thought is because so many people were having 4g connectivity issues in these extended area, VZW simply stopped allowing it as a troubleshooting measure that apparently is still going on. I brought this up to VZW tech support and they were clueless as usual. I also posted in the VZW Community Forum hoping to get an answer, but none thus far.
you could try dialing ##778# and pressing send, select edit mode, password is 000000 and then under modem settings change it to rev A. then press the menu button to save and reboot. it has helped me out in the El paso area. friend showed it to me the other day Far as i can tell is that it disables the new network that allows voice and data at the same time since that's the only difference i have noticed other than not loosing my connection anymore. I just a heads up this does not work on the latest version of virus rom RC1B3 sensless but did with previous version and several other roms i had tried

Thanks for the tip, but it didn't work. VZW must have changed something to where extended coverage area no longer get 4g. Only those in true 4g areas. I really think this has a lot to do with the folks experiencing the constant drop 4g issues. They must have rationalized that if the extended area for 4g is not up to par and forcing 3g would be better. Only way I can explain it. From consistent 4g to only 3g. I sure miss the speeds.

How to at least get 3G back for now while verison works stuff out.

If your someone whos stuck on 1x this will at least get you back to 3g.
Use the ##778# menu (hit call after ##778#)-->password is 000000-->modem settings-->Rev A-->choose enable-->hit the menu button on the tbolt and commit changes
Update:
So to answer the question of should you change this back?
The default setting is eHPRD which is verizons simultaneous voice and data 3G network. By hitting enable your switching your phone do EVDO or Rev A is pretty much their older 3G netowrk. The info is yours now you make the call of weather you should or shouldnt
To Revert back once everything is fixed:
Use the ##778# menu (hit call after ##778#)-->password is 000000-->modem settings-->Rev A-->choose eHPRD-->hit the menu button on the tbolt and commit changes
So is this a network problem or a phone problem because of flashing radios?

[Q] Unable to get 4g

Alright, I'm a flash addict, love trying all the roms and well I was switching from bamf 2.0 beta 4, to Gingeritis VIII. I did my wipes and everything special, yet when I finally load it up, my 4g is not there. I'm in a 4g area, and I can get 3g but not my normal 4g. Not sure what to do, I even tried restoring back to my bamf rom with no luck. I had it before I did the switch and it was working fine. Anyone else having a issue or know what could be causing my problems? Forgot to mention I did try changing the radio settings and doing a fix permissions, neither did anything.
Did you update the radio?
Have you called Verizon to see if there is an outage? My 4g went down for a few hours yesterday, might just be them working on the network.
Radio was updated and I'll give big red a call, I mean its kinda odd I hold my 3g easily yet my 4g dies. I've had my 4g all night, and it did happen in the morning, so maybe they are working on it.
Called big red and they told me it would be back online soon just a short outage in the area. Came back online as I was typing this lmfao

Everyone needs to remember, VZW is constantly upgrading/testing/fixing their LTE network. Things like this will be going on most likely all year as they continue to roll out to more cities/markets. First thing to do if your 4G starts acting up is just give them a call. More likely than not, they are doing work, it's just coincidence that it stopped working right after a flash
Yeah I can't get 4g to work either. It might be because I don't have it yet. I figured I would just flash rom after rom till I find one that works.
Just trying to get past 10 posts.
I am also in a 4G area (Los angeles) and had 4G all the time but when I upgraded to the Gingerbread leak I lost it and yes I flashed new radio, its been about a week now. Haven't called big red yet and also haven't heard of updates in my area but 1 week, that's a long time. I also reverted to froyo with accompanying radio and no change...wondering if anyone else in LA area has the same problem or do I have a problem with my phones hardware...
Be sure to reboot the phone like 5 times. That brought it back for me.

I called tech support and let them know of the issue, said there is no 4g outages in my area (los angeles) and was instructed to factory reset, which i do before any rom install then i gotta call back-if and when i get this resolved i will post the outcome.
Not sure what rom you're on now, but whenever I flash something if I lose data I have to go into the antenna settings and force 4G for a while and it will pop back up

I'm still on Baseband 1.16.00.0223 and Software 1.12.605.6
Could it be since i'm rooted and have not applied the OTA, that verizon is refusing to authenticate my data (connection)? Because when i look at lteonoff, it says i'm connected to whatever network i specify, (LTE, CDMA - eHRPD OR Rev. A [if i go into ##778])
If I go to options ->software update -> check new, the 3G or 4G icon will pop up and checks for a newer firmware. It tells me there is a new update and i can press okay, defer, or deny. As soon as i exit that and try to use the browser, the 3/4G icon goes away. Should I update to the MR1 OTA?

No, that's not why you don't have to worry about that just yet haha. Try and force 4G by putting it in LTE mode

Im just in a 3g area and everytime I go to a gigerbread rom and radio all I get is 1x. Then reverting started jot even fixing the problem. After about 10 flashes back and forth and rebooting a hung I finally ended up on Froyo with 3g. I'm staying here. Not worth my time to run gingerbread.
I was running a GB rom and this afternoon lost all data.
If I take out the sim card and reboot, I can get data for a minute or two...then it goes again.
I'm going back to stock and taking my phone in tomorrow.
Ugh to the guy that said call tech support to see if there is an outage, I don't work in a call center but do in a store and I hate when people come in or call for outages my suggestion is to follow @vzwsupport on Twitter they will let you know in no time and it keeps you from having to go through the menus and crap.

I re-flashed back to stock and now I've got 4G back.
If anyone is having these problems after running GB I would use JCase's "back to Froyo" flash before trying anything else.
Verizon has had a known problem of thunderbolts loosing its 4g, 3g and 1x. I had the same problem over a month ago when my phone was only able to receive calls and text. Had no data.. so I called them they had me do a factory reset and it fixed it

turn off background data and auto sync then reboot when u get 4g wait a sec then check the internet to make sure its really on then turn sync etc back on back on

[Q] I cannot use my 4G network?

Hello,
I have recently downloaded GummyCharged GBE 2.1 and the theme ICS onto my Droid Charge. The problem is, I have noticed that I cannot use my 4G network, even after I continually tap on it.
I have come up with some probable answers that I still need help with, but I think I downloaded ED1 and not EE4?
Is that correct?
I can use my Wi-Fi no problem, just the 4G network I can't use. So if I want to use my 4G again, I have to root my phone again?

You have a 4g device shouldn't matter ED1,ED2,EE4. You getting no 3g/4g at all?
When you go to setting/wireless networks/mobile networks is packet data checked?
Yes, packet data is checked and I cannot see the symbol for 4G on the status bar. I have no idea why it's doing this.

If you are using wifi your 3g/4g wont show up. Make sure it is unchecked. Also you can use wifi but if in airplane mode your 3g/4g wont show up. I know most of this is simple but trying anything.
Hi,
Airplane mode was never checked. I also don't leave Wi-Fi on when trying to use 4G, so I guess that's not the problem.

Well I'm probably sure that I still have more data left, but is that what happens if you run out of data?

No he is saying Verizon network may be down in the area. Over the past well just say the past they have had outages with no coverage. Could call Verizon and see if they tell you the truth or reflash.
Agreed Athens I should be more clear in the future lmao

My area has 4G coverage, I think I need to reflash.
Try flashing again doesn't work then my guess would be similar is fried or data is really down happened to me too cs said it was fine went to a physical store and all if there phone were down so yeah best of luck to ya

Don't remember the whole thread but have you tried a different sim card? Doesnt that control 3g/4g and if the card is fried you won't get signal? Just an idea that might be easier than flashing something else.
True but sometimes the store reps know better than call center about data outages

Damn, I guess I'll reflash. Do you think it's because of the GummyCharged GBE ROM? Because I was in a rush flashing it but I remember I didn't root my phone first and I didn't flash Voodoo. Before I reflash, no one knows how to fix this problem?
when i flashed gbe 2.1 i flashed the odin version first like 1.7 or something then voddoo was enabled then i booted into recovery flashed 2.0 voodoo already enabled then i flashed 2.1 ontop of it because it is a addon package not a full rom and i was good to go on i side note just back up flash something like humble just to see if your data works if it doesn't work on humble then you know verizon doesn't know **** and data is down or your sim is fried but i would think you wouln't be able to make phone calls if that was the case or make sure you have the most recent radio sometimes that might work sorry if i couldn't help more let me know if you need more help or questions... good luck man
I fixed the issue,
I just went into recovery mode and wiped my data, cache and Davlik cache. Then I installed ICS again from my SD card and the 4G started to work once again.
Sweet
