Curious to know which specific Captivate hardware revisions are still plagued with GPS, and random shutdown problems? Me too. So pop open your captivate, look under the battery for the rev number, and vote.
I'm guessing that a lot of the older revisions (which aren't tested refurbs) are still more problematic than the newer revs (even if running non-stock ROMS), but if there's enough data points in the poll maybe we'll see a pattern emerge that's better than anecdotal evidence (such as my 1008 being stable as a 10-legged chair.)
I have 1007 crappy GPS butt it works never had any problem worth random reboots
Purchased mine at the end of July 2011 i could go and warranty replace it because of the GPS but aren't some of the new ones having the 3 button combo problems, or is that also an old version that's fixed bow

Yes, but most of the problems should be concentrated in specific builds, as lessons are learned and higher-quality parts are used, since pissed off customers and replacement phones cost $.

Have a look around the threads and you will see that it really is very random. Like I have a 1011 build with no issues what so ever and that includes being able to use one click odin to go back to 2.1 when it had 2.2 pre-installed, while others that have the same thing and use it and wind up in a bootloop with tons of issues. GPS as always sucked in all models compared to other phones.
They supposedly made the GOP's a little8020 better with done if the new models but that doesn't mean is good
So it is just a luck of the draw to get the different problems with the different builds

I'm on my fifth right now, all had/have shutdown issues, first one also had GPS issues, fifth one also has screen problems. First three were 10.07, then 10.09, fifth is 1011. I'm not bothering to hope my sixth will actually work but I'm going to keep making them send me replacements as long as they keep sending me broken phones.
I have flashed 4 separate captivates. Mine is a 1010 my sister has a 1012, her bf first had a 1011 he broke the screen and got an insurance replacement that new one is a 1012 and it came with froyo preinstalled on it. I have had no random shut down issues with any of them, or any problems using odin one click, which some 1010+ have. GPS works great, granted none of them are on stock so that could be the fixes in the roms.
phones are just as individualistic as their owners.
I had a 1007 that was working brilliantly save for the typically halfbaked GPS, until its internal NAND chip died. It was CM7'd, but it must have automatically used my external as a fallback (partitioned and ruined it >_>), allowing me to flash it back to stock.
My warranty-replacement was another 1007, but came software-bricked out of the box and lacked the button combos for download mode. I couldn't fumble together a working jig, so I gave up and blasted ATT for giving me a broken phone as a replacement.
After hollering at them for 12+ hours and getting them to ship me a new phone, my current one is a 1102. I just did everything from ADB and CWM; I'm not going to try and muck with it and I doubt that it's going to take oneclick well considering that it is almost like a 1.1 hardware revision as I would guess from the sudden jump in number. Considering how the 1007 that came with Froyo lacked button combos once softbricked, I'm not ambitious enough to try with the 1102. GPS actually works well, words I never thought I'd say with this phone.
Safe to say, I'm just going to ride out my contract now on Froyo. I voted for the 1102 with no major issues.
My first phone was a 1006. It had very poor GPS on stock but was eventually usable with GPS fixes, running LBSTest Mode in the background, etc. It also developed random shutdown issues after about three months, which started slowly but got more frequent as time went by. I got it replaced about February 1st by AT&T through the mail, not in a service center. The tech I was connected to because of the shutdown issues claimed the replacement would be a rebuilt with a new outer case but used parts inside and would not have random shutdown issues. The build number of the replacement is 1008, but of course that probably doesn't mean anything. The replacement GPS worked fine out of the box before I flashed, and has also worked fine on Andromeda. It locks in a reasonable amount of time, and tracks almost perfect. I have only had one trip in four months where it didn't stay on the road. I have also had no other hardware problems with this phone. Judging by my experience alone, I would say there are definitely differences from build to build, but of course that is anecdotal rather than scientific.
Related
I recently screwed up my captivate fooling around with terminal. I managed to get it to boot to the AT&T screen so I kinda messed them over. My replacement unit seems to have a better gps chip. I know it has been refurbished because the inside stickers are not OEM. Apparently there is a quick hardware fix that is implemented to get the gps to function. I have a feeling its something to do with grounding and the fact that it uses the back cover for grounding is interesting. I think they might be replacing the copper fitting on the right side of the phone that contacts with the back cover when you open the phone. It seemed too new looking. I saw a post where someone said clean the contact patches on the battery cover and slightly pull out the right copper tab for more contact on the battery plate. I did this and tested my gps during a 100 mile trip. The gps worked pretty efficiently. It stayed locked on and it wasn't bouncing all over the place. I found my lock while moving which was impossible with my old cappy. I say its a grounding issue. I also noticed that my phone wasn't burning hot after an hour and a half of constant gps use but my old cappy would be really hot after 30 minutes. I may not be a phone expert but i learned a bad ground can cause intermittent flow in a circuit which causes that circuit to cut off after a short while. In the galaxy s phones I think it is a grounding issue that has been fixed. I advise people to make sure the contacts in your battery cover is clean(use alcohol to clean them). Pull up the right tab slightly so ensure contact with the metal battery cover(the left is rectactable and cant be pulled). I would make sure you use a rubber or plastic case on your cappy so interference with the gps or antenna will occur(the reason why plastic isn't a bad material to make a cell phone out of). My gps settings are basically AT&T's default. You will only get an accurate lock if you use the data network(cell towers) and of course use gps satelites in the location settings. Thats A-GPS at its finest. I just going to probably keep this captivate as a backup phone (unless someone just gives me the right amount of cash) because i just purchased an unlocked dell streak from dell for 400 bucks since they are having a sale on them. And now i know my gps works on my cappy.
I just got a replacement phone less than 6 hours ago and noticed a big improvement in GPS signal strength on the stock firmware. The inside stickers on mine are also different.
It quickly found multiple satellites with snrs in the 40's. The highest hit 47. I honestly didn't think it was possible to get that high unless you were floating in outer space. It started to lock on to multiple sats around the 30 second mark.
After loading up Darky's port 6.0.2 I tried again and in lbstestmode it found and locked onto 9 satellites in 8 seconds. It honestly blew my mind. Now this rom uses Da_G's GPS files. I still have a ton of real world testing to do but that initial result gave me a lot of hope.
Whats the build number of your replacement phone? Mines 1007 which is old build. You can find it below the serial number on the phone behind the battery.

Curious, do you have the 3 button recovery problem that build 1008 is notorious for?
Also, give it a few days on the GPS. Most times a factory reset makes the GPS work good and then it goes to heck in a hand basket. YMMV
For those who are not able to get a replacement Captivate, you guys might want to follow this link...

I will continue to use it. I have not tweaked anything on the phone just because i don't want to take any chances of may be wrecking my gps through software changes. I have tried it and I get in to recovery mode just fine. Mine is a refurb unit so i think the bugs are worked out.
Just exchanged my Cappy on Monday. My new build is 1012 and the last 4 digits of my IMEI is 6219. This is a very recent build. So far no random shutdowns (I returned my old one for this) and my gps is much improved over my old unit. So far I have had zero issues locking and no longer are my tracks all over both sides of the road. My previous was useless. Leaving it on stock for another week.
Hmmm, what version of the OS is it on the 1012? I guess its jh7 eclair.

Build 1008 (same as my original one). Button combos into recovery and dl mode work fine. My original 1008 phone did not have issues with button combos either.
I've only tested the GPS while driving once but it kept a lock, and rerouted me fine when I decided to take a different way then was suggested.
it looks like i might have to use the random shutdown complaint to get a replacement!!
The fix must've come after 1010 because that's what mine is and I need the LBSTestmode mod to make it even remotely usable.
Similar situation
My situation is the opposite though. When I originally got my Captivate back in August the GPS worked flawlessly. I even remember thinking how quick it got a fix compared to old phones and GPS units. After about a week I had to return the phone due to a sound issue. Now my GPS seems to take forever to get a fix, lags a lot and is not very accurate. Kind of like most users report. It seems like you are playing a slot machine when buying a Captivate. Pull the lever and you might get a great phone but the odds are way against you.
I keep hearing about this unfixed Nexus S reboot bug. I'm curious... is it really so widespread? Or is it only something a few people experience, like the luck of the draw?
I apologize if this question has been asked before. I'm considering buying the phone but can't decide if I should wait.
It always seems to pop up in the forums but it has never happened to me. I've had mine for almost a month now and it all seems to be perfect. No defects with screens or buttons or reboots. Maybe im just lucky...or people with complaints are just louder than ones who are satisfied.
The issue is real and Google have confirmed it. They've been working on a fix and the official word was an OTA update was going to be released this week:
Just a heads up that our initial tests look good and that we are expecting to send out an OTA within one to two weeks that will resolve the issue. Thanks for your continued patience!

Argh. I did not have this problem until yesterday (had the phone since January). Now my phone will reboot right after a call.

I've had three Nexus S so far. The first one I picked up on dec 16th and didn't get a single reboot on - but the oleophobic coating on the screen was coming off in spots so I swapped it for another unit.
The second unit had issues rebooting. I saw it immediately - it rebooted while sitting on my desk. I could constantly recreate this by streaming audio over BT in my car - every 10-15 minutes it would reboot.
I picked up a mt4g for a few weeks to see if they could sort whether this was a hardware of sw issue (that thing is a brick to hold) and eventually picked up a third Nexus S once they identified it as a SW issue. This device has not rebooted a single time in the 27 days I've had it. I can stream audio and make long calls without an issue.
All three devices have operated with identical configurations. Based on this I'd say that some units are worse than others.
Maybe it's issue with the hardware tolerances and some hardware that falls within the accepted tolerance is not operating as expected and causing kernel panics as a result. This would explain why some have this issue constantly and others rarely or never see it. Perhaps it's something seemingly unrelated that everyone experiencing the reboots has in common. It would be nice if Google weren't so tight lipped about this. Supposedly the OTA will address these issues and moving forward it should be irrelevant.
I get this issue at least 60% of my calls (not that i call much). i have made 4 calls today, and 3 of them my phone rebooted during the proccess.
I am returning this to CW tommorrow for a replacment unit, i love the phone dearly but do not want to be robbed for £429 but not being able to take it back if they do not resolve.
It could be a batch issue, or something i guess, but that's not my job to find that out, that's for the people i paid for the hardware/software
I hope i get another unit, and if not problem free at least i can rely on a warranty, hopefully making sure if google slack on fixing this i can get my money back.
If it fixes soon or the new handsets ok, i can keep this lil beauty of a phone
I've had my SNS since launch. My phones has rebooted on me twice. It was right after playing a 3D game. Right after i exited the game the phone rebooted. Funny though, it hasn't happened again.
I've gone back to using my Desire until Google sort this out. For me, any call above 5 minutes has a 50% chance of rebooting the handset.
The handset (running stock 2.3.2 and un-rooted) will on occasion spontaneously reboot as well. Not good.
It is a bug that seems to be very limited in scope but is very serious for those affected. Personally, I've never had it happen to me or my wife.
Thank you for your replies, they were very helpful. I was keeping up with the OTA Bugfix promised by Google for the Nexus S. Although, that was promised almost 3 weeks ago and still no word from Google since. That's one of the reasons why I came here to ask for advice before I bought the phone. Although I'm curious to see if 2.3.3 resolved the issue. I know the 2.3.3 just lists API changed, but I wouldn't expect them to list bugfixes on a list of API changes.
I think I'm ready to buy the phone and hope for the best. I'll probably just get Best Buy insurance just to be safe.

Getting the insurance is definitely the right choice. I hope you enjoy your phone and your stay here!
I get periodic reboots on both my phones.
It is not that noticeable, since it often happens when I am not using the phone and unless I glance at it and see the start animation, I may be unaware of it.
But it has happened during a call as well (couple of times on each phone) and then it is definitely noticeable.
I have this bug... not during phone calls but random reboots. 2-3 a day. I hate it but its tolerable.
Weird, I don't have this bug
If flashing a custom rom, the problem will be solved? Since i am considering if i should get Nexus s later on.
Thanks

I'm not too sure about that. I literally just called LG Electronics after I posted this thread and they told me that this is not a "known issue" with this device. OMG really??? I asked the Rep to Google it herself, and she will see 1000's of complaints from consumers, she told me LG doesn't pay attention to blogs???? So how is a patch coming if they are denying there is even an issue? Call for yourself 800-243-0000. They kept telling me that I must have dropped it or submersed it in liquid. TERRIBLE customer service!!! I most likely will be returning this thing today. I am a man with a sour taste in my mouth now.
Exchange it until u get the sensation, this is my 3rd phone with the same problem.

Flash CM7. No reboots at all.
I didn't have reboots running stock 2.2 but try CM7. If you still have reboots on a rom that is not based on LG's build, then you have a faulty phone. If CM7 fixes your reboots, then you know it is just buggy software.

+1...logic. I am ashamed that didn't cross my mind.
I haven't had problems (aside from one reboot two weeks ago) so, the problem isn't universal. I would trade it in until I got a stable one...IDK.
Just something that i have observed in the past few days... I have recently come back to toledo ohio from phoenix arizona... the major difference between these two places is that in tempe specifically, I had 4g nonstop and everywhere i went whether it was way out in gilbert, north phoenix or out in goodyear, however back home here, I live on the outer fringes of sylvania and my signal is horrible and it was the same crap on my nexus one... I am happy with 2g but typically it is GPRS or just no signal at all, thank god for wifi-calling!
Ok so back in AZ, I never had any reboot problems or battery pulls after charging... I bought the phone on the 20th of april and I think i had 1 reboot and 1 battery pool within the first 24 hours of having the phone, no big in my opinion... Since I have been back wednesday night i have had 4 random reboots and just this morning I had to pull my battery. Strange thing was when i put it back in the battery was at 89%... my battery monitor says it was fully charged then there was a sudden drop, so i charged it back up again....
I am wondering if my changed cell signal and strength has caused these issues... if you are having reboot problems what is your cell signal like on a consistent basis?
I have been running on EB1.0.2 since I has been out
I just posted how to fix the reboot problems. Tested!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=13770645&postcount=13
That would be a good test. Someone having reboot problems to put the phone in 2G only and give it a few days.
I travel for work and never had any problems outside of using the leaked Gingerbread build. I suspect the Kernel is the issue and something in the software is causing the reboots. Since the leaked gingerbread didn't come with a kernel, it only worsened the problem.
Anyway, give my method a shot and see if the problems still exist.

Nice! Will give it a try now. Thanks!
Even with CM7 I was getting the constant reboots and freezes on two different phones, both of which have been returned.
I tried to like the phone as hard as I could - but those problems were a definite deal breaker.
If they can get them resolved, I may go the G2x route again but I fear the problem is more due to lack of quality control than just a software glitch.
Straight from the LG Forum Site:

First time i saw LG's official statment was on 19 of April.. Sooo ANYONE got the "FIX" yet?
"LG is aware that certain Optimus 2X customers are occasionally experiencing random device shut-offs. The Nordics have been one of the first markets to sell Optimus 2X and we have sold a substantial amount of units. The return percentage is low and within the error marginal, so this issue only affect a limited number of customer. However, LG regrets the inconvenience this has caused.
We have determined the cause of the problem and have developed a software update to remedy this. The update is currently being rolled out in partnership with carriers. Dates of update availability will be determined by individual carriers. LG is committed to providing quality devices and is working hard to ensure that users have a consistent and convenient smartphone experience. Again, our apologies for the inconvenience."

I can't speak for the Optimus 2x since it's an international release and I only deal with the US phones released in the states.... But the G2x update should be just around the corner, from what I have heard.

My first G2x had no reboot problems, no battery problems, etc. Only issue was bad backlight bleed. Exchanged and 2nd phone had almost zero backlight bleed, but gets warm pretty quick compared to the first one, self reboots at least twice a day, bluetooth to my car now only works sporadically, wifi disconnects itself after screen shuts off, etc.
Third phone sent was the worst of the three. I'm keeping the 2nd one a day before my remorse period is up and doing a full refund which is 5/29. Waiting to see what Sammy will announce on 5/24 as far any US release announcements.
I've had zero reboots on mine, still on stock froyo but rooted and bloatware frozen. I've only had two freezes since I've got it but it was usually right after I installed some app and had it running along with a bunch of other ones. But the thing is I'm constantly killing tasks. After coming from Nokia N900 and symbian N8 seeing android constantly leaving tasks open with no exit option on every app drives me nuts.

Picked up my 3rd G2x yesterday - immediately flashed to Bionix, had no troubles... until...
I plugged it in to charge overnight.
I woke up this morning and it was hard frozen, hard to pull the battery.
Ok guys - I'm at a breaking point here. I've tried every ROM available. I've tried the phones with and without any 3rd party software being installed. I've tried them all without GPS, bluetooth or WIFI turned on...
I guess LG doesn't want us doing a simple task like .... charging the battery. And yes, I was charging using the OEM charger. And when I woke up and found it locked up the battery was not warm.
I picked up this 3rd G2x out of sheer impatience for the Sensation but it looks like this one is going back too. I simply can't take this anymore.

Must be nice
I agree, when I bought the phone the t mobile Rep told me GPS would freeze it until its updated. Although I've had one black screen freeze and one reboot on the charger, but if you think about the o2x, having LG state that it has a problem unlocking from the button (freeze where you must take battery out), reboots on charger... means they must be able to fix this as well. Not too worried, especially when they told me that when I bought it. Mine did freeze without GPS on though

sounds like the same story with t-mobile with every smartphone, waiting more waiting, then tease, then release the official updates for every other phone but the one i chose. i suspected they were pushing this out to fast. personally i would have waited another couple weeks myself to get a gingerbread/bug free released phone without the 4 returned phones before this 5th g2x. i came from the Vibrant though (great phone, just had a no support from tmobile or samsung and had some hardware bugs) so my opinion is definitely a biased one lol. At least we got some awesome developers for this phone
what do you guys think?
I'd hardly call this news. Confirmed speculation at best. With all of the supposed software issues (battery life for one) I'm not in the least surprised the GB update isnt happening as quickly as some would hope.
Doesn't really say much. Just that it was rushed.
Kills me though. People are always like, "RELEASE IT ALREADY" and are in a hurry to get it and when they do rush devices they get mocked as not being perfect.
Would you rather have a phone that is less then perfect and released months ahead so we can play with it and hack it or pushed back months and bug free?
Me personally, I'd rather get it in my hand and play with it. In a few months, when it "should" have been released, the issues "should" be resolved.
I dunno. Almost a month after it's release and we have tons of roms and kernels. If you are having problems, there is nothing stopping you from fixing them. If you are looking for a bug-free stable phone then don't buy cutting edge devices.
And for what its worth, the only hardware issue is backlight bleeding. The other stuff is just gimpy software which most has already been corrected by custom roms.

I have to disagree here. Everyone has been so quick to blame the lockups / reboots on faulty software, but from my experience, it most definitely is related to a hardware problem. I've had three g2x's now, I treat them exactly the same with the exact same programs installed. One locked up multiple times a day. Another locked up once a day. The other seems to only have a weekly hiccup.
Im thinking hardware defect here - maybe too low voltage on the soc? No clue. But there's definitely a difference between hardware on this one.

I'm just hoping they can pull the fix from the O2x and apply it to our phones.
They = Devs
http://phandroid.com/2011/05/16/lg-...-rolling-out-to-europe-to-fix-random-reboots/
I do wish they would have put off the release of the phone a few more weeks to work out kinks, but overall I don't think things have been that bad.
The light leakage thing is interesting because I think tons of devices have this, only people like us notice. Mine is pretty minor and so far everything else is great, so I'm gonna stick with it for now. I don't ding LG/T-Mobile that much for the light leaks
Random reboots however are bad, but at least it looks like they have identified the issue, and we should get it pretty soon on the G2x. I do wonder how a software issue is worse on some devices than others though.
The update to Gingerbread will be nice, but it isn't a ton of difference. I like bleeding edge stuff as much as the next guy, and ran CM7 nightlies when they were first available for my Evo, but I would much rather they take a few weeks longer and clean up any issues than rush it out.
Based on what people say about the Atrix (I know it has a 30% bigger battery) I expect the battery life is pretty bad on this phone, and might see a huge improvement with an update. I'd much rather have that vs. getting 2.3 sooner.

Agreed. I've had no issues as well except really minor bleed that doedn't bother me a bit.
After installed xiialive, streaming issue resloved.
The ONLY issue left is ogg vorbis tag problem.
I may try CM7 to see whether this problem is fixed.
This is my 5th g2x, all of them had issues from rebooting, overheating, or having to pull the battery to boot up anytime i charged it. they also all had pretty bad screen bleeding. this one doesn't for the most part. also a couple had a couple with major signal issues. this 5th hasn't had any issues yet and ive had it for a week and a half so looks good. I think its a mixture of both hardware and software. new dual-core cellphone technology with an old Android OS that was surpassed almost a year ago. I'm sure Ice Cream sandwich will be completely built for only multi-core devices so hopefully this phone gets it..... in 12 months?
Have you been getting new batteries every time as well? There are murmurings of it being a battery issue.
Im having the same problem with phone rebooting by itself or sometimes it just turns off. An there is time where the screen just goes black, and have 2 remove battery it sux :/. Love the phone and all but if this keeps happening to my phone think might just go ahead and sell it :/
I had the reboot issue and an issue where the device would loop through the LG screen and not boot up (had to do a reset); when I called T-Mobile about this they sent me a new battery. I received the battery last week and have not had any issues since replacement. Moreover, my battery life has increased TREMENDOUSLY. I always thought it was a software issue, but maybe it's the battery - or maybe it's only a matter of time before the phone corrupts this battery.
yup. each time i returned the whole box with all accessories, battery included. i even tried getting new sim cards 3 times.
FWIW I have been able to reproduce the battery freeze bug at will. Use device until battery is drained, attempt to turn it on until it will not even flash the exclamation at you anymore, plug it in and "viola" it won't start again w/o battery pull. I have tested the multiple times with 2 devices
The first device had this random bug "in the wild" so to speak. The second has ONLY exhibited it when I perform the above procedure.
My second likes to randomly reboot, but ONLY when running the stock rom. It's rebooted completely randomly at least 5 times (once when charging, once with screen off sitting on my desk, twice with screen on as I was looking at it, and once moments after turning the screen off and putting it in my pocket. It has NEVER rebooted while running CM7 (as buggy as it still curently is) Eaglesblood (1.2/3 and now 4 or with Other Kernels (though I did have some random shutdowns-- no reboot-- with Faux's Kernel and CM7)

So you'd rather be the beta tester for the phones you buy? And if the company you bought the phone from can't fix the issues (or choose to ignore it)? Like Tmobile's dealings with the Vibrant. Sorry but bending over and letting these companies take advantage of customers like this... is stupid. By accepting shifty/****ty devices you are giving them the green light to push out devices without proper quality control in the future... And with T-Mobiles reputation of being honest with customers I wouldn't put so much trust in the capacity of these companies to polish phones post release. They are only going to want to focus on their next big project...

I have a feeling android 2.4 will be out before we even get 2.3. This, "it's coming soon," is getting old. Said the same for the MT4G.
that makes me feel optimistic. similar procedure for rebooting issues with previous phones for myself as well. well if t-mobile ever releases update (LG gave it to them weeks ago LG has said) before our phones all meltdown, fry, or explode then we'll have one bad ass phone

That's what they said about the Vibrant too... h'm, I'm sensing a pattern here lol.
This **** would be unacceptable if this happened on an iPhone (though... much could be said of the iPhone userbase's... erm, pickiness. So maybe thats how they ensure results lol.)

also i agree with that post a couple above my last. $600 phones should not have problems. that's why we pay so much, convenience/awesomeness/functionality. for the best of the best at the time, otherwise we could just take the cheap smartphones all the carriers release that you never hear about.
Just got my third G2x from T-Mobile. I'm running LauncherPro. I must have done something wrong because I backed up to SD card but after installing new phone it gave me an error reading SD card. I had to reset everything!
Anyway, I got a 2nd replacement (this is number 3 phone) because the 2nd one continued to have the random reboot issues.
This one is different from the other two. The icons in the top bar are smaller and the GPS signal button is different. Could this be an upgraded software?
It states Android 2.3.3, kernel version 2.6.32.9 and Software version LG-P999-V21e
Trouble is, this phone is way worse than either of the first two! I think only 1 reboot so far (1 day) but 3 times now after the phone sleeps I have to remove battery to turn it back on! And it will not allow me to mount the phone as a USB. Sometimes the message appears to turn on USB but it will not work. Touching the screen does nothing. Then the screens start to rapidly change.
Looking like number 4!
What other programs have you installed? These types of issues are almost always apps and not the OS or the hardware. The fact you are having similar problems with three phones seems to indicate that even more. Stop blaming the device and figure out what you are doing to it to screw it up.
Try installing the GB drivers to your computer via LG. That's what I had to do to get my phone to mount.

I agree. "I went through 8 G2x's and all of them did the same thing after I restored my backup..."
Also, get off the stock firmware as it is absolutely unstable (Sleep of Death (SOD) and resets). I've been running MIUI since mid-August and haven't had 1 reset or SoD. Most CM7 nightly builds are good but a few will cause issues. Look at the stable version of CM7 or Weapon.

The stock Gingerbread firmware is absolutely rock solid. I have been running it since it was released and have had zero problems. The only change to the system is that I rooted it. If I install an app that gives me the slightest trouble I uninstall it immediately. There is nothing wrong with the GB rom as LG delivered it. The Froyo rom did have problems, but the GB rom is very good. Many of the custom roms are based on it and just have hacks and tweaks. Very few are compiled from source like CM is.
Update to Phone
First, let me say that T-Mobile Customer Service is great! Every time I call or visit the store they are friendly and try their best to help me.
I called T-Mobile and explained the issues on this phone, as one person wrote above the "SOD". She walked me through a bunch of steps, and I'm fine with that, I understand she has to be sure i have done all the typical troubleshooting. She confirmed that the new one had GB.
She is sending phone number 4 out today. Meanwhile she said go by the store to have them check the battery, just in case. I did that, it was kind of funny. Gal says, no need to test it, I'll just grab a new one. She comes back and inserts new battery, "There ya go, brand new battery". Ah, Miss, I say, it won't turn on now. "No, that can't be, its a new battery". She finally went and got me yet another new battery!
Hopefully this 4th phone will do the trick.
As for the apps, maybe I do need to uninstall some, but it seems like what I have are all mainstream apps:
Launcherpro
Beautiful Widgets
Touchdown Pro
Pure Calendar
Juice Defender
Batter Monitor Widget (free edition)
All of the above are paid apps too, not free versions (except Battery Monitor).
Any thoughts, known issues on these?
Thanks!
All those are pretty common apps, none of which I've had trouble with. Juice defender has been a cause of connectivity, etc issues for some people, but works fine on all my devices.
If I were you I would ***** until they replaced it with a Sensation, Amaze, SGS2, etc. I've seen so many people with 3,4,5,6 replacements on this board....why? As much as I like the form factor, the G2x is not worth 4 replacements. NO product is worth 4 replacements. Needing to have a product replaced is one thing, having to replace the replacement, or more, is ridiculous. Fool me once....
At what point do you say, "wow screw this POS." 4 replacements is a company jacking you around. I got lucky with a mostly mint G2x on launch day. Had it had issues I would have replaced it, beyond that..... the G2x is a nice phone, but there is absolutely zilch nada NOTHING special enough about it to deserve 4 replacements.
I don't mean to sound like a douche or harsh or anything. I just don't get why this is a recurring theme on this board. Would you do this with a pair of jeans, or with a TV, or with tires? No. The product sucked the first time, why repeat the experience?
I hear ya Adamhart. On the phone with CS today I asked this very question. She said I was not eligible for a different pone ... yet. She indicated that x number of returns within 90 days usually trips the option. First sign of trouble on number 4 and I will be calling. When the phone is working I like it, but I'd happily trade it for something else.
Thanks for the note on Juice Defender, I noticed on another thread some issues so for the moment I have it turned off.
Fouth Phone Arrived
So number 4 arrived next day. I set it up. Such a pain to have to reinstall everything. So far all is good. The battery life is not improved but one day later with no reboots and it starts up without a problem (no sleep of death!).
So far so good.....
I' ve been using an extended battery for a few months now and its been great. No reboots or SOD issues.
Couple of weeks ago I insert the stock battery. Within the hour I have 1 freeze up and 3 SOD! That stock battery is defective. Its been the cause of 80% of my problems with this device.
4th phone has same problems. Already posted a rant! I'm going to try rooting!
You know I never had a problem with my g2x and I see all these people going thru 3-6 phones THANK GOD I'm not on that statics.

And I see mostly the ones who have problems don't usually nvflash cwm and install a custom rom.

I broke my last one (slammed it on concrete) so got a replacement through Asurion, they sent me a refurb (as they tend to do).
thing worked well for the first day, albeit a bit weak on battery, then started having charge issues and general mis-reporting on the battery (it'd say 100% when it meant 20%, around 5 hours after being unplugged it would drop very steeply (~75%) to catch up)
I noticed on the 1809#*999# menu that the Factory Version was registering as Unknown. After a few more days of it being a pain in the ass I went ahead and did a Factory Reset. After which the Factory Version reported the correct numbers.
Works almost flawlessly now, I'm getting a good 30 hours of battery life out of the thing (mostly texting + standby). I'm currently using the default launcher with Go Contacts and Go SMS (It sucks Go Contacts can't clear missed calls properly on 2.3.3 but it's a minor complaint), Facebook, Battery Monitor Widget (3c), and a few other small apps.
Also, I noticed on my first phone that JuiceDefender seemed to cause Sleep of Death issues. At least thats what the process of elimination had me believe (and this was back on Froyo). IMO - just leave everything alone with regards to task killers and battery enhancers, GB actually does a very good job of battery management on its own.
I continued to have trouble with number 4. Called T-Mo. Long story short they said "nothing we can do until LG comes out with new software update".
Phone is just not useable the way it is (mine that is) so I finally followed the advice of so many on this board and I rooted the phone and installed CM7.
I was a little freaked out a first because CM7 looks so different. Now I am comfortable with it. I have loaded up all the apps and configurations again. So far it is good. A couple of times the phone shut down but that may be more to all the changes I have been doing. One the whole it is far more stable than stock. Battery life is a tad improved too, but still not great.
My mom is about to embark on her third try. She doesn't download apps at all. Phone won't hold call for more than a minute.
