So when the Inspire 4G first came out, I joined from the dark side (iPhone)... and rooted for the first time. I tried InspiredHD and Android Revolution, but this was back when they both had the tinny audio, so I ended up going back to the ATT Stock Rooted ROM because I wanted my audio back.
Now several weeks later I see a bunch of ROMs available, several of which are Android Gingerbread ROMs. Which are the best? Is there a guide that compares their features that are updates on the daily basis that seems to be how often they're updated?
What do you recommend? I'd like one which is Gingerbread and still keeps the HTC sense, I do like my sense. I'd also like one that had the original audio quality, not the tinny audio that came with the preliminary ROMs.
Any advice\opinions would be appreciated.

a) It's Gingerbread?
b) No audio issues?
c) What's the best way to backup\restore so i don't have to reposition and create all my app arrangement and folders?
d) It's HTC Sense, right?
Thanks!
desire hd coredroid v4 for inspire 4g VS stock rom.
Personally I know that the stock rom to date has best battery life with setcpu.
I am using coredroid and it is very nice, but of course, it has terrible battery drain. 5-10% drain every 45 min.
It would be nice to have a custom kernel or some fix because it is a great rom, the looks and layout is nice.
It does have a fuzzy speaker sound .
I would suggest staying stock for a week or two, until the devs work out the bugs.
There is always a fix for most everything.

Thanks for the tips, yeah I was afraid of the battery drain. I was afraid it might be an issue. The battery is already bad with Stock ROM, I can't imagine it being any worse... 10% every 45 mins, yikes, that's a battery in 8 hours... lol.
I thought the speaker audio issue was resolved. Is this still not the case in 4.0?

As for application's I always do a clean install that way I know everything is right, not like it is all that hard to do.
My battery is lasting a complete day with this rom.
As for sound issues, people think that this is a large home speaker, it is a phone and the speaker works just fine. I listen to Pandora for three to four hours and it is fine for me.

Why would you do a clean install if you don't have to? Seems annoying to have to re-download and re-position apps every time a ROM is flashed.
A complete day for most is less than 12 hours... and if a phone lasts 12 hours sitting unused, it's really not ideal. Considering most people have a hard time getting a full day out of the Inspire 4G even without Mod's, I really don't want to change to anything that'll give me less battery than I already have, hehe.
I wish you luck my friend but this thread belongs in general, not development.

Because the Dev's say to do a clean wipe if you read the post from them and did I not say Pandora for three to four hours, not exactly unused, plus calls that I receive??? Plus do what you want you asked I responded as for anything else I could care less, it is working fine for me.

Speaker Issue: You can say it's a small speaker all you want, but it's still a quality speaker, and the digitized sounding issue was a major issue to me when the first ROMs came out. I don't expect surround sound and bass, but the stock ROM doesn't sound at all digitized\tinny.
Sorry I missed the Pandora comment. Not sure how you stream 3-4 hours a day without a recharge, considering that time of streaming would beat what the phone's battery and radio are capable of doing, but hey, more power to ya.
And for the record, the expression is "I couldn't care less" ... People who say "I could care less" are just repeating improper usage of the english language rather than thinking about what they're saying.

Incorrect. This is a development question. "General" is designed for things like "What speeds are you getting..." kinda thing. Anything ROM related goes in Dev.

Have you done the battery reset procedure to ensure that your battery is being used to its full extent after installing the new ROM? If not, that may be your issue.

Battery reset procedure?!?!?!
Is that like those pieces of tin foil that used to "protect" me from my phone's radiation back in the 90's? LOL
Do explain, or provide link please....
Try something new
If you are really looking for AUDIO, give MIUI a shot. I have tried every ROM out there for the phone and I always end up with either Android Revolution 4 or MIUI. I like sense a lot, thus the AR4. But I often flash over to MIUI because the customizations are great, the themes are fun to play with, and the audio is louder than stock. Battery life is good, not quite stock but not as poor as CM7.
I would also try CM7. Fastest ROM out there, but ASOP reminds my of my old droid x and I can't do that anymore. Neither MIUI nor CM7 are sense and you must install an alternate home launcher if you want scrollable widgets.
My final $.02- try them all. With back ups from ROM manager, you can have several on your sd card!

Rchdmix v3.4 works good for lots of people
Sent from my Inspire 4G using XDA Prem App
Any gingerbread rom right now is going to have battery drain. It is a leaked version from htc, and the source hasn't been released, so there isn't and custom kernel support for it. Modified stock is good, but honestly the battery life on a modified stock isn't going to be nearly as good as a rom based on 1.8X built by Sergio or Mike. Depending on what your doing you on the phone the drain is anywhere from 256-350ish ma, while in standby it stays around 4-6ma on say Android Revolution v3.1 or Coredroid v3.2. In call audio after flashing the sound fix is not going to be stock but it is going to be very close. There will be a sound boost on the outside speaker, so it will be easier to hear it ring. Make sure when you flash the sound fix after flashing a rom or a radio that you wipe the cache and devilk cache.
If ginger bread is what your looking for I would wait, if customization, performance and battery life are what your looking for flash AR v3.1 or Coredroid v3.2
I am not going to tell you how long the battery lasts when I use it cause how much I use my phone may be quite a bit different from how you use your phone, so to say that it lasts so many hour when I do this or that is trivial. But it is certainly longer then stock.
As to what section this should be posted in, it should be general since it's a question, and we have no Q&A section. Development is mainly for ROMS and Fixes, and Themes in apps are mainly for themes, apps, splash screens and boot animations.
Keep in mind you can give all the roms a whirl, as long as you make a nandroid back up with cwm you can flash any rom you like, and if you don't like it then use your nandroid backup to return to exactaly how your phone is right now.
I see some people commenting on how bad battery drain is. Is it really that bad for you? Did you have the captivate prior to this phone? My battery last me all day and into the next day with wifi on. I text a good bit and surf the web. My captivate could barely last till I got off work, this phone I can go to work next day with it on same charge and charge during the day

Thanks, I'll give this process a whirl.
I really enjoyed the Inspire but I started to get all crazy reception issues where I couldnt make a call or receive sometimes. Anyone else having these issues? Someone at the att store said alot of ppl are complaining of this.
Yesterday I exchanged for the atrix and it felt a lil bit more snappy, nothing to wow me but I could make calls and receive, no issues at all. My main issue was it would hardly charge on usb from any pc I used, and it would get really hot trying so right there I said, this is going back. In less than 24hrs I was back at the AT&T store to get a new inspire.
I really dont want to have any reception issues, and I almost believe all the flashing roms, radios, kernels, I messed something up along the way. Heck, Im even scared to root now. I want to use the phone totally stock and make sure it works great whereever I am before I root even. I'm also wondering if rooting causes battery to drain quicker.
So I ask all you experienced Android users/developers. Am I right in believing that all the flashing I've done might of messed my reception? Even maybe rooting might have messed something up? If not, is there a way to make a complete backup right now, so I can go right back to this when I do begin to root and what not. I almost feel like the stock rom, when I went back to it and unrooted before I returned the last inspire made no difference. The new Inspire seems to hold a better signal now. So can I back up the current stock rom before I do anything?
Interested to hear what advice this drums up. I went from Atrix (painfully bad PenTile LCD, shamelessly locked down) to Inspire back to my old N1 because I got a few days of no signal and missed calls in the office. I read recently that there's some sort of leaked magical radio that fixes a lot of the issues, so I'm keeping an eye towards the Inspire. $20 at Costco is a worthy use of my contract upgrade.
Yeah, there are other phones coming down the pike. I'm stuck with AT&T and given this is an otherwise solid phone and how awesome HTC tech support has been with my N1 I don't want to go with another mfr. Also Optimus 3D has only 512MB RAM? WTF?
If you have patience, your issues will be ironed out. Inspire ROMs and development is still kind of early.
If you just be patient, GPS...reception....bugs....will all be a thing of the past. Both devices are excellent. HTC build quality and 'openness' is something to envy. Just relax, I think you made a wise choice.
Just out of curiosity, what rom were you running when you started having issues? I'm on stock with root and have yet to have any problems with gps or reception.

nailed my main problems right there (in bold)...
Nice to see you lingering in the inspire forums DG
I purchased the Inspire the day it came out and absolutely loved it. That one had major issues with the screen. It would not register my touch about 80% of the time. So I exchanged that one for another Inspire and the second one had all sorts of problems. Dropped calls, calls no received, no VM notification, random reboots, and of course the always popular, locked phone that required a battery pull.
At that point I just thought the Inspire was not that great of a phone so I exchanged for the Atrix. When the phone arrived I knew two seconds after it booted that I hated the phone. It felt cheap, it was tiny, and Motoblur reminded me too much of TouchWiz - which is a shame because the guts of the phone should have made it a monster but Moto has a long way to go with their Motoblur. Within 2 hours of getting the Atrix I took it back.
So, I am on my third Inspire and so far so good. No missed calls, dropped calls, texts, no reboots, no locks, no problems at all. Right now I am rooted running the stock rom. I have tried a few different roms - RCMiXHD_v5X, LeeDroid_HD v2.2.2, and Android Revolution 4G. I had GPS issues with LeeDroid and Revolution and data problems with RCMiXHD. The phone has performed pretty dang good with root+Stock so I will probably keep it that way. Hopefully a GB version will drop soon because I do like the extra features that brings.
Anyway, thats just my experience.
This thread is getting some good information placed in it, and a good OP as well.
My recommendation is that you follow the hack kit, but stick to ROMs based off of the Stock Inspire ROM for now. As much as I enjoy a UV/OC kernal, I can't say it's making a huge impact in my day-to-day use of this phone. I'm running AR 3.2, without any issues right now on the stock inspire radio, but my next flash will probably be a ROM like ClearDroid.
I also wish we had an easy stock backup procedure, but as far as i know we're stuck with the reflash + s-off combo.
As a side note: Where the heck did DG come from?! It's good to see you popping your head in here. I started with your Super-rooter and lived on Cognition and Perception for my Captivate.

I cant really recall as battery life hasnt been a huge issue for me on the inspire, but for everyone that has rooted their phone, would you say battery life improved or worsened? I'm probably going to root later on tonight.
Oh and why no 'one click' root/unroot scripts for the Inspire yet? Just wondering, because even the atrix had a one click root script.

Yeah I meant more of a legit release not a leaked version. I have tried RCMix and Adroid Revolution and had issues with both. Nothing major but enough for me to go back to stock.
I'm having an oposite dilemma.. I first bought the Atrix and then after i noticed a little lag when unlocking the device i bought the Inspire.. I had the Atrix for 2 weeks and i have had the Inspire for 1 week.
What i have noticed about the Inspire is that when I try to open a .doc file thats only 62kb large, its not nearly as smooth as the Atrix with the scrolling and double tapping to zoom in. I dont know why this is... 62kb is pretty small. When i had the Atrix, it opened the same file super fast and there was no lag at all..
Also, with websites like adultswim and phonedog which has a lot of flash, the Inspire lags quite a bit compared to the Atrix which has little to no lag.
Im very tempted to go back to the Atrix and just live with the little bit of lag when unlocking.. IDK what i should do..

Well good luck in your decision. I dont doubt the Atrix was a tad faster at some things left stock, but that wasnt a main concern for me as I know on the Inspire a rom here a kernel there can remedy that.
I've actually opened .doc and .xls files close to that size on a daily basis with no real lag issue. Then again I'm using Documents To Go, app I used from my Blackberry days. Works pretty smoothly.

I m running the rooted stock rom self-cleaned from the ATT bloat with TiBU in chuck norris mode... No problem with my GPS, no problem with the reception... battery life around one day of pretty intensive use... I notice altough I m not having issues as i mentioned the signal's strength displayed is always pretty low (2/3 on 5)...
I tried ClearDroid but since it was pretty much the same as my 'self-purified' stock i just got back to it...
I don't think the reception's issue was related to the rooting itself... some device is just kinda defective from factory...
In the end it boils down to personal preferences.
I had both and got rid of the Atrix for the Inspire because of screen size and its speedy as is out the box. Don't really see the need for a Dual CoreS unless I'm gonna shell out more cash for the laptop Which I see is pointless since I might as well lug around my Vaio i7. In the end I'm happy with the Inspires build quality and performance.

It depends on your needs/preferences. Specs wise, yes the Atrix might be better but the Atrix does have its issues as well which irked me enough to come back to the Inspire which I liked so much I'm willing to give it a second try. One thing is for sure, I cant see myself getting another Motorola device anytime soon. Been there a few times, and had bad experiences with their locked devices. HTC has been the better experience for me so far and I'm enjoying the Inspire more than I did the Atrix.
Very true about preference...I like the Inspire's size wouldn't want to go bigger. Many hate motor for locking down the BL....but it seems like HTC will be doing the same on future devices

I decided to put this in the developer forum because i really feel like this is a problem with the roms/tweaks and needs to be looked into.
If the moderators thing otherwise i am sorry then.
I have been getting complaints with friends over the fact that i come in muffed. When i plug in the headphones that came with the phone to talk they say there is a big increase in clarity. They say when i am muffled they really need to focus to understand what i am saying. I decided to try a few different roms and surprisingly the quality has been different. I have used the same radio in every rom test as follows:
Radio : 10.56.9035.00P_10.14.9035.01_M (This should be the newest TMO OTA radio)
Roms:
Android Revolution HD 3.0.1 (Initial Rom i had. Very Muffled. No dual core patch.)
Android Revolution HD 3.0.3 (Upgraded to this one wondering if it will be fixed. Same muffledness. Had dual core patch)

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1198684
http://insertcoinrom.blogspot.com/search/label/pyramid
In all cases the headphones preformed the same amount. They were pretty clear and really helped the muffleness except in the case of insertcoin. The headphones also seemed to have a slight amount of muffleness to them, the difference between headphones and mic was slight.
I have seen other posts about this issue but no clear explaination or dirrection in trying to fix them. I hope this jump starts stuff.
It seems the more modified roms are the ones experiencing the issue... but obviously this isnt the most comprehensive testing.
I did these test over the course of 3 hours with my brother. He stayed in his room in the house and i stepped outside on the sidewalk in the same place every time. Wifi calling was NOT used.

i tried ARHD and IC2.3.0 - no muffled voice from my end. in fact, it was crystal clear. IMO if you've plugged in your earpiece and it sounds ok on the other end, then there's a high chance its the set's microphone thats faulty.
i suggest switching back to stock rom (S-on etc) and see how it goes. if its still muffled, its time to go for warranty
Have moved this to the General forum (for the time being at least).
You'll need to find out if other Sensation users have the same problem. I haven't had anyone tell me they have trouble hearing me with any custom ROMs.

Well i have tried the stock roms and its been reported to sound alot better.
It would be nice if we had that multiboot thing going on our phones lol
And i didnt try S-On again because i heard it runs the risk of bricking....
I have the same problem except if I was to call someone, my voice to them would sound like garbage. Obviously its noticeable as well cause they will tell me they can't hear me and it sounds like crap.
For me,
Roms that have this:
Android Revolution
Senseless
Roms that don't:
Virtuous(currently on)
i had those "garbage" sounds on almost every phone i owned accept for the Nokia 5210 and below Its telco problem not the phone.
phones with garbage sound (that i have owned) : BB9800, iPhone2/3/4, Desire, E72

Hi Guys.
I have my Sensation coming tomorow, what are the things i should know, from you experiences of this from the moment you get it out the box.
Thanks in advance
Oliver
Common issues include:
Horrid battery life due to phone not properly sleeping (can be fixed by flashing another rom)
Dust underneath the screen
Two different displays, one is cooler and one is warmer.
Phone seemingly to suddenly die, battery goes out and phone refuses to turn on.
Heat, plenty of it when using the phone actively for 15 or 20 minutes.
Now I don't want to scare you, I've never experienced any of these issues aside from the heat thing (which doesn't hurt the phone). But I feel you should be unbiasedly prepared.
Good things:
Speedy, I recommend Android Revolution HD 3.x until ICS is stable.
Sharp display, qHD resolution makes a huge difference.
AOSP and Sense roms available.
Rooting is easy and with any HTC, clockworkmod is permanently installed. No loopholes or exploits just to get to it - unlike my sister's Sidekick 4G or father's DEFY.
Great mobile data speeds
And of course, it's the true first Beats phone if you flash an XE rom (Im looking at you, Verizon and Rezound.)
It's a great phone, and stable ICS is just around the corner.
Hi. I consider buying this phone as well. mattbutsko, thanks for sharing your impressions on the device.
I have to say that sometimes I visit the Sensation thread just to read some news/ information. I remember that some users have complained about the 3.5mm jack (the paint on the edge wears off which creates connectivity issues with the headset). Other users have issues with the responsiveness of the display; the quality of the power button; the quality of the back housing panel (The 'HTC' logo on the back falling off); etc.
IMO the Sensation is a great phone and I am a little surprised of all that user complaints. Currently I have the Wildfire S and I am stunned by the Sense interface and all. At the same time I don't experience any problems with the hardware or the build quality. Still, I feel it's time to move onto the next level and to give my WfS to my girlfriend or my sister (we'll see ) as a present. But I don't want to regret switching my phone afterwards...
So what would you advise me? What do I have to check to be sure as much as possible that I'm not buying a "faulty" unit - when buying the phone? Thanks again!
Cheers, i'll probably wait a couple of weeks before rooting etc to make sure everything is alright with the phone, but after that i would imagine i'll put an ics rom on. i'll see how it goes... Thanks =D
Hi!
I have the XE about a week now and everything is great so far. None of these problems exist, not even the overheating(which I was warned that in the first two charges would be intense) . I'm really happy with it ( but as I said I own it about a week now so ... )
What does annoy me though is the WiFi deathgrip... But I think that's solvable with a case

I got my Sensation about two months ago and I would never change it due to a few "problems" that could occur... Came from a Wildfire, this thing was an issue itself. Sensation is GOLD, compared to that.
Flashed different kind of ROMs, now testing Virtuous Inquisition v1.3.0 Senseless ICS (4.0.1), great ROM so far!
Never had any problems while flashing ROM or Radio/Kernel, rooting, make phone have SuperUser or CID!
best.phone.ever...of course, running ics 4.0.3

I would say to go for it. for all the users that have the major issues, a far greater number don't. This phone's great now, but ICS will make it even better, like, substantially better.
Horrid battery life due to phone not properly sleeping (can be fixed by flashing another rom)

I'm new to Sensation's as well, can someone care to explain this problem? What exactly is the problem with it? Do all default phones come with this problem or does it depend on what ROM is pre-installed on it? And what ROM versions fix it?

This is also my experience so far with my XE, I don't see how a case will help with death grip though.

Well there are three states your phone can be in. Screen on and in use, screen off and in use, and screen off and sleeping. There's a problem that can arise where the phone doesn't go into sleep mode and continues to run "awake". This drains battery quickly. Good news, it doesn't happen to everyone and most roms don't suffer from it (although my stock rom did - Sensation 4G TMO here). Someone tried to say it was a hardware issue some time back but I'm pretty sure that's flat out wrong.
I've only had it for a few Weeks now but I love it. I only had it a week before I rooted it, very easy to do. I was using the stock Tmobile updated rom and everything worked very well. I have it in a case and haven't noticed any dust under the screen, but I also haven't been looking for it. I also haven't noticed the wifi grip issue.
As for rooting and roms, ether are many to choose from, sense 3.0 or 3.5, cm7, and now I've betas. I'd hope within the next few months we will see an official ics released.

We got 2 in the family and we haven't experienced any of the mentioned faults in our phones. I got mine in early June, it's rooted and I run LeeDroid SuperSensational 4.2.1 on it and its really superfast. My husband's got the other one about 3 month ago, it runs stock and that one also works perfectely!
Thanks for all this guys!
But i am now getting rid of my sensation... i know ive only had it under a week.
Anyway the reason for this is tablets... i wanted to get one, but it would mean my phone was more pwerful than my tablet, which to me at least seems odd. so anyway im getting a galaxy not as a compromise between the both.
Thanks for all your help!
Well, can't say as I understand your reasoning, I don't really see how a tablet can replace a phone or vice versa, but glad you're happy with your decision.
I am getting really frustrated with my wife's Nexus S. Currently it has ICS with glados kernel, but the problem persists no matter what rom/kernel combo I put on it, the phone always randomly reboots. It has been doing this for months now. It will be sitting on the bed and we'll just see the boot animation, it turns right back on so only has a few seconds of down time but it does it CONSTANTLY, every couple of hours.
Is it possible the phone has something physically wrong? What can I look into? I'm bout ready to unroot and warranty exchange. I run the app "aLogcat" on it, but that doesn't really answer much *probably because it's a bit over my head* When I set it to Fatal level logging, nothing really even shows up. I can post the log cat result if anyone would care to look at it for me
Have you tried raising voltages??
Are you using any oc settings or live oc?
I haven't messed with anything related to processors since I had a G2 lol. Do I just use Set CPU? I've never really dredged into that subject because I don't know what voltages to set it to, etc. Can logcat help confirm that could be the issue? The only thing I can really interpret from it is that winamp is having Wifi issues... but I don't even have wifi activated in the app.
I see these posts all the time and I'm sorry I picked you to harass.

DON'T MOD YOUR WIFE'S/GIRLFRIEND'S/FRIEND'S/ANYONE'S PHONE!
Seriously, they don't care about overclocking, undervolting, cool mods or whatever as much as they care that the phone turns on, makes calls and doesn't reboot. And if they really do care you need to tell them to do it themselves.
/rant
Also reboots are annoying and I hope you are able to get yours sorted out.

Wow, I didn't realize that you knew my wife. She had a rooted G1 when I met her, and has been using Cyanogenmod since CM5, with a break while she had a vibrant because it doesn't have CM. You are extremely offensive to women, and you are a sexist, close-minded neanderthal.
She does lots of things with her phone, and hates it stock. She and I are both stumped about the issue so *I* posted up. I'm not some retard that modded my casual girlfriend's phone and screwed it up on her.

Yeah it's really frustrating, at least it comes right back up. My Evo 3D needs a battery pull when it happens because it locks up on the bootanim
I may look into newer ICS builds, but like I said this is across all rom's/kernels
Can SetCPU help even if I'm not sure the exact voltages to play with? I've just always been against Profiles running so I haven't used it in quite a while. Any ideas to try out?
I think that you should go back to a factory set with GB just to check that the hardware is fine...
I'll try that probably tomorrow. Going to drive her nuts stock though haha. I know her vibrant GPS issues ended up being hardware

See I knew I was going to say it to the wrong person. I'm not sexist it's just that so many people think it's a good idea to mod someone else's stuff and usually what I read on here is "my gf". I'm actually quite sure that tons of users on here are women either intentionally trying to hide there gender or use a name that is neutral. Which is sad if they have been made to feel that is necessary. Anyway if your wife actually does some flashing, modding, or whatever then I apologize to you. However, my point still stands for the rest of users that mod other people's phones. Just don't do it!
Didn't mean to go off on ya, but we're definitely not that case Our whole house is full of modded stuff, Modded Wii, PSP, Anything android, lots of *geek* mods to my car, etc. I've swayed her this way but she already had it in her to begin with
But yes, I agree with you. I have people coming to me ALL the time to root/mod/whatever their phones and I used to help out a lot, but now I debrief them on what it all means and most back out of it because it isn't relevant to them. And whoever I do help I treat it more like a learning experience and teach them how to maintain it on a basic level without me *changing roms, etc* and don't help people unless they're willing to understand it. Pretty good system I think lol
I'm also having random reboots on the Nexus S that I got just recently. I ran a 100% stock unrooted rom for about a day and no reboots, but I primarily got the nexus for cm7 so I had to go back. Sure enough, within about 12 hours of rooting and flashing, got another reboot. Tried many different roms/kernels and underclocking/overclocking. Let me know if you find a solution.
likewise, if ya beat me to it
Anyone know what voltages to try out? I'm in the process of booting up into GummyNexus, and to test it out I flashed this too:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1236779
Anyone heard of the Adrenalin Shot? Found it while digging into the Vibrant 4G forums. Universal flash, says it can even help an Evo 3D's 3D Picture quality, but general snappyness. This Nexus S is running crazy fast/good at the moment, but not sure if thats just because its a fresh flash with no apps loaded yet.
Try Matr1x v14.0!!!

I purchased a third party battery and have been using it for nearly a week without any reboots after having a reboot nearly everyday with the stock battery. Although it doesn't make much logical sense, a different battery seems to have fixed the issue

Running Gummy Nexus I haven't seen any reboots VERY stable rom, highly recommended. I also flashed the Universal Adrenaline Shot. I found it hidden in the Galaxy S 4G threads but it's got a specific GS4G version, then a universal that worked great. Very snappy
